Freakshow
Silverchair: Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar); Chris Joannou (bass); Ben Gillies (drums). Additional personnel: Ruk Mali (sitar); Amanda Brown, Ian Cooper, Lorenza Ponce, Elizabeth Knowles, Todd Reynolds, David Mansfield, Ravi Kultilak (violin); Matthew Pierce, Rudi Crivici (viola); Jane Scarpantoni, Margaret Lindsay (cello); Pandit Ran Chander Suman (tampura, tabla). Recorded at Festival Studio, Sydney, Australia. The three members of Silverchair are still in their teens, but the band's second album displays a real maturity to go with its musical variety; FREAK SHOW expands the typical grunge palette to include timpani, sitar and a string section (which features Jane Scarpantoni, cellist to the alt-rock stars). The themes continue to be dark and heavy. Along with the earnest and agonizing confessionals, this time there are also angry responses to criticism of Silverchair's first album, 1995'sFROGSTOMP, which was slightly more popular with the public than it was with the critics. Undaunted, Silverchair forges on and grows up. Standouts on FREAK SHOW include the unsubtle "No Association," which pleads, "Leave me alone I want to live/Stop sucking the blood right out of me," while guitars carve a deep grungy groove, and "Abuse Me," which sets furious lyrics against a deceptively melodious background. Such impassioned songwriting is tinged with hints of sincere disillusion; the drama rarely boils over into melodrama. There is also a sense of spontaneity that sets Silverchair apart from other grunge and hardcore-influenced bands, and hints at even better things to come. SKU: 1073034

Medusa
Personnel: Annie Lennox (vocals, flute, keyboards), Tony Pastor (guitar), Kirampal Singh (santoor), Judd Lander, Mark Feltham (harmonica), James McNally (accordion), Marius De Vries (keyboards, programming), Peter-John Vettese, Andy Richards, Matthew Cooper (keyboards), Doug Wimbish (bass), Dann Gillen, Neil Conti (drums), Pandit Dinesh (tabla), Louis Jardim (percussion, bass), Stephen Lipson (programming, guitar, keyboards, bass), Danny D, Steve Sidelnyk (programming). Recorded at The Aquarium. Includes liner notes by Annie Lennox. "No More `I Love You's'" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. MEDUSA was nominated for Best Pop Album. Eurythmics' Annie Lennox made her solo debut with 1992's lavish, self-descriptive DIVA. MEDUSA, her second release, takes a different tack. By recording an album of cover songs, Lennox gets to do what she does best--interpret lyrics and deliver the dramatic impact of a song. By abandoning DIVA's extravagant production, Lennox returns to the synth-pop sound that made her famous, giving MEDUSA a much sparser feel. "No More `I Love You's'," originally recorded by The Lover Speaks, benefits from this approach. Arriving at the dreamy, other-wordly lyrics with a child-like naivete, Lennox immediately gets to the point, sounding at once innocent and frightened, then understanding and compassionate. The same sense of tension that made Eurythmics so interesting can be found here: cool synthesizer hooks and repetitive vocal ostinatos pitted against Lennox's soaring vocals, which provides a fascinating dichotomy. Similarly, The Clash's "Train In Vain" gets a sophisticated, maturetreatment. This time, a jazz/hip hop element is introduced, countering the often desperate lyrics with slick grooves and sassy, Motown-inspired production. In lesser hands such an approach might destroy the songs' sense of urgency; Lennox, however can convey these feelings without raising her voice, giving the song new possibilities. SKU: 1004918

Look Mom No Head
The Cramps: Lux Interior (vocals); Poison Ivy (guitar); Slim Chance (bass); Jim Sclavunos (drums). Additional personnel: Iggy Pop (vocals). Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California between June 21 & July 14, 1991. All tracks have been digitally remastered. For the Cramps' fifth studio album, the band had a new bass player, named Slim Chance, and a new drummer on board. Lyrically, LOOK MOM NO HEAD! returns to the B-movie horror subjects that concerned the band at the start of its career, subjects like the one that inspired "Two Headed Sex Change" and the rampaging reptile in "Alligator Stomp." And musically, Poison Ivy's dexterous guitar is as agile as ever--see "Hardworkin' Man" and "Hipsville 29 B.C." for examples. The recordopens with the crunching "Dames, Booze, Chains And Boots," which contains a reference to Elvis, though unlike most of the Cramps' Elvis references, this one is about Elvis Costello, specifically the song "Pump It Up." Iggy Pop makes a guest appearance, dueting with Lux Interior on a cover of "Miniskirt Blues." "I Wanna Get in Your Pants" sounds like their version of "Louie Louie" and works a little cross-dressing into Interior's usual, amusingly crass, seduction lyrics, which are at their most crass and least amusing a mere one song later on "Bend Over, I'll Drive." "Eyeball in My Martini," with its fuzzed-out bass guitar, is a punchy rocker that delivers horror movie lyrics about a plague of--you guessed it--eyeballs. SKU: 5076378

(What's The Story) Morning Glory
Oasis: Noel Gallagher (vocals, guitar, E-Bow, piano, Mellotron); Liam Gallagher (vocals); Paul Arthurs (guitar, piano, Mellotron); Paul McGuigan (bass); Alan White (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Paul Weller (guitar, background vocals); Tony McCarroll (drums). Recorded at Rockfield Studios, South Wales, United Kingdom. "Wonderwall" was nominated for 1997 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The state of English popular music in the mid-'90s will be looked back upon as a time when groups like Blur, Supergrass and Oasis rode the UK charts with a style (nicknamed Brit-Pop by that country's press) that fused the 1960s pop aesthetic of the Beatles, Kinks and Small Faces with the flamboyance and cocksuredness of T. Rex and the Buzzcocks. But (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? is a more tempered follow-up to Oasis' 1994 debut, DEFINITELY MAYBE, the band having gone from enfant terrible to dreamy romantic this time round. Oasis has also crossed the Atlantic this time; (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY has made the band a major U.S. success. Toning down the brattiness, Oasis guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher brings minimal orchestration into the mix, while still mining for inspiration in the past. A buzzing amp cues up the opening cut, "Hello," before giving way to a thunderous rocker that credits Gary Glitter as a co-writer by way of a line lifted from his "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again." The innovative use of strings on songs like "Cast No Shadow," "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger" avoids any mawkishness, leaning more towards a melancholy sheen. Such ambitious chance-taking turns "Don't Look Back In Anger" into agrand epic that has singer Liam Gallagher sounding like Ian Hunter to brother Noel's Mick Ronson. All these external tools do nothing to detract from Oasis' ability to play rock and roll with a religious fervor. The first version of "The Swamp Song" (the untitled track 6) is a bluesy, instrumental rave-up complete with a wailing harmonica that sounds unlike anything they've done before. It's followed by "Some Might Say," a sweeping epic layered with chunky riffs. While new pal Paul Weller's guitar lends some grit to "Champagne Supernova," the best song on MORNING GLORY is "She's Electric," a '90s equivalent to "Itchycoo Park" with the end-chorus of "With A Little Help From My Friends" grafted onto it. Generation Terrorists
Manic Street Preachers: James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar); Richey James (guitar); Nicky Wire (bass); Sean Moore (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Traci Lords (vocals); Dave Eringa (piano, Hammond organ);Richard Cottle, Spike Edney (keyboards); May McKenna, Jackie Challenor, Lorenza Johnson (background vocals). Recorded at Black Barn Studios, England. Those fans that discovered this album when it was first released deserve to feel ever so slightly smug. It took most of the rest of the world until EVERYTHING MUST GO before this album was fully appreciated. Sounding like a cross between metal and punk, the energy and melody never lets up for one second. After the first three tracks are over, a quick lie-down is in order before you tackle the sentiment of "Motorcycle Emptiness." Lyrically, the Manics are giants; it is a great pity that their statements of ironic values of the 80s and 90s are not listened to more. Thank goodness this album was finally discovered. SKU: 1001051

45 Or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough To Go On Our Other Records
Full title: 45 Or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough To Go On Our Other Records This is a collection of NOFX tracks from various compilations, 7"s and EPs, plus a previously unreleased song and dub remix. NOFX are masters of the punk ethic of self-deprecation, and it begs the question if they truly realizethe mark they have made on the history of modern hardcore. After 18 years, the band that sums up its musical prowess humbly as "good," releases a staggering collection of B-sides, compilation tracks, and rare cuts (many of which were previously long out-of-print in their original 7" pressings). A cover of the Seymour Simons standard "All Of Me" sets the tone for this collection, and boasts an attitude that really says it all; this band lives for doing things their way. It's easy to see how a song such as "Lazy" could have spawned many of the late-'90s neo-ska bands. MXPX also sneaks in a ska treatment of the song made famous by Metallica, "Last Caress." Well worth it for the expansive liner notes penned by Fat Mike alone, 45 OR 46 SONGS is a must-have for true punks who know NOFX to be one of the top acts of their genre. SKU: 1072388

Tyranny And Mutation [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with BLUE OYSTER CULT and SECRET TREATIES. Blue Oyster Cult: Eric Bloom (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (vocals, guitar); Joe Bouchard (vocals, keyboards, bass); Albert Bouchard (vocals, drums); Alan Lanier (guitar, keyboards). Producers: Murray Krugman, Sandy Pearlman. Reissue producer: Bruce Dickinson. Recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, New York in 1972. Originally released on Columbia (32017). Includes liner notes by Lenny Kaye. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music, New York, New York). As proven by the band's sophomore effort, 1973's TYRANNY & MUTATION, Blue Oyster Cult had only hinted at its knack for penning gripping heavy metal with its 1972 self-titled debut. Whereas the debut did have moments where hard rock shined through the psychedelic haze, TYRANNY was the first BOC record to fully stress the band's metallic roots. The production team of Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman returned once again, this time helping BOC focus the intensity and power of its compositions by streamlining the vastness of the debut. The opening track, "TheRed & the Black," is a scorching rocker that brings to mind the uncontrollable energy of the punk rock that came a few years later (renowned punksters the Minutemen/fIREHOSE/Mike Watt proved this point by covering the track numerous times). BOC's penchant for hatching peculiar song titles continues, as proven by such tracks as "7 Screaming Diz-Busters," "Wings Wetted Down," "Teen Archer," and "Mistress of the Salmon Salt (Quicklime Girl)," all of which are album highlights. Great Escape, The
Blur: Damon Albarn (vocals, piano, organ, synthesizer, handclaps); Graham Coxon (acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, saxophone, handclaps, background vocals); Alex James (bass, handclaps, background vocals); Dave Rowntree (drums, handclaps, background vocals). Additional personnel: Cathy Gillat (vocals); The Right On Ken Livingstone (spoken vocals); Stephen Street (handclaps); Angela Murrell, Teresa Jane Davis (background vocals). The Duke Strings Quartet: Louisa Fuller, Rick Koster (violin); John Metcalfe (viola); Ivan McCermoy (cello). The Kick Horns: Simon Clarke, Tim Sanders (saxophone); Roddy Lorimer (trumpet); Neil Sidwell (trombone). Recorded at Maison Rouge and Townhouse Studios, London, England between January andMay 1995. Beyond British and sensationally sociological, Blur and singer/songwriter Damon Albarn weave tales of stifling middle class ennui into clever pop vignettes. THE GREAT ESCAPE is another demonstration of Blur's unique intelligence, more of Albarn's witty commentary, and substantial proof that the group may be bordering on genius. As usual, Albarn's senses are keen on THE GREAT ESCAPE. His ear for melody and sound textures shines throughout the album's fifteen brilliant tracks. The ska horns and spy soundtrack guitar riffing on "Fade Away" exemplify Blur's knack for pop music, yet elevate the song beyond simple genre-fication, with a dignity reserved for the orchestra pit. The snide humor behind "Mr. Robinson And His Quango" rubs shoulders with the desperation of "He Thought Of Cars," all the while dwelling on what they hope to escape. It's this nagging dread that carries the album--the sense that the people Albarn describes are as desperate to find meaning as Albarn is to capture it within the song's narrative. THE GREAT ESCAPE may not turn into Blur's great American breakthrough album, but if you're not thrown by Albarn's overwhelmingly British aesthetic, it just might be enough to take you away from the confines of your day to day doldrums. Smiling Phases
Traffic: Steve Winwood (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Dave Mason (vocals, guitar); Jim Capaldi (vocals, drums); Chris Wood (flute, saxophone); Jim Gordon (drums), Rebop Kwaku Baah (percussion), Roger Hawkins (drums). Traffic was one of the most delightful and inventive bands poised between the late '60s and early '70s. The group began as a lightly psychedelic, folk-inflected outfit but, amidst personnel changes, developed into a jam-happy band with a beefed-up percussion section. In that final incarnation, Traffic's ten-minute long musical excursions were never less than interesting. SMILING PHASES traces Traffic's history over two discs, making astrong case for the validity of every point on the band's growth curve. The first disc draws from Traffic's first era--the albums MR. FANTASY, TRAFFIC, and LAST EXIT. "Heaven Is In Your Mind" neatly encapsulates just what makes Traffic so memorable, as easy transitions seem to organically lead into one another. The second disc covers the studio albums between JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE and WHEN THE EAGLE FLIES. Throughout it all, Steve Winwood's rich, evocative, and soulful vocals remain Traffic's easiest point of entry. SMILING PHASES is a great collection devoted to a band that should not be forgotten. Cultura
The follow up to2002's self titled album is the British (via Gibraltar) band's fourth full length. Seven years of touring the UK circuit has had an obvious impact on the band's sound as this album sees their tribal-metal sound take a step further. 'Cultura' has a more polished sound, veering more towards nu-metal acts such as Il Nino and Soulfly than the hardcore influences the band used to evoke. SKU: 6555028

My Way (The Best Of Frank Sinatra)
Arranged and conducted by Don Costa. Arranger Don Costa's style, simultaneously modern and classic, was the sparkplug of Sinatra's late-'60s/early '70s releases, and MY WAY is the album that raised the bar for the recordings that followed. Throughout, Sinatra shows off so many different sides of his talent that it's hard to get past the admiration of his diversity, beyond which there's a whole separate level of enjoyment to be had in the individual performances. On Ray Charles's "Hallelujah, ILove Her So" he's eminently soulful and swinging. He plumbs the depths of his soul for the bittersweet touch of "Yesterday" and Jacques Brel's "If You Go Away." Sinatra delivers his manifesto on the epic title track, in which he looks back on a life of determined individualism with both pride and a harsh sense of reality. SKU: 5062552

Moon Of Alabama
This double-CD set, which spans three decades of Nina Simone's illustrious career, strives to capture the live Nina Simone experience on disc, with excerpts from some of her most acclaimed recorded concerts. Simone's fans almost regard her concert appearances as mystical experiences, highly charged and soulful events that have earned her the nickname "The High Priestess of Soul." The choice of material covered here is--as always with Nina--all over the map. The first CD of the collection opens with tracks from her legendary 1963 Carnegie Hall concert, featuring the bitter Brecht-Weill song "Pirate Jenny" and her haunting version of "Don't Smoke in Bed"; it then explores her 1975 concert in Paris, with a stand-out version of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," among others, as well as tracks from her 1962 Village Gate appearance in New York City, including the movingOscar Brown Jr. lullaby "Brown Baby." The second disc is an entire set recorded in 1984 at London's Ronnie Scott's Club and includes a rocking version of her original "God, God, God," as well as two more Brecht-Weill songs, including the title track, both from the opera "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny." Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (Universal Mastering Studios-West, North Hollywood, California. Having already been an established leading soul singer for 13 years and having 18 R&B hits to her name, in 1967 Etta went to record in Alabama at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio. The result was her most accomplished album, on which her voice had been mixed to perfection, allowing herto sound strong on the previously distorted high notes. James was rightly seen in a different light as one of the great soul voices of all time as she belted out powerful tracks such as "The Love Of My Man" and "Watch Dog." Her slower numbers were equally arresting, including the wonderful "I'd Rather Go Blind." SKU: 1060990
