Personnel includes: Geoff Muldaur (vocals, guitar, clarinet, piano); Kate McGarrigle, Anna McGarrigle (vocals); Dave Alvin, Stephen Bruton (guitar); Richard Greene (violin); John Sebastian (harmonica); Van Dyke Parks (accordion, pump organ); Roswell Rudd (trombone); Mike Finnigan (organ, background vocals); Bill Rich (bass); Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Bob Neuwirth (background vocals). Engineers includes: Sean Carberry, Dave Ahlert, Bernie Larsen. Geoff Muldaur's 1998 album THE SECRET HANDSHAKE was a cause for celebration, coming as it did after a 17-yeargap. The equally impressive PASSWORD came a scant two years later. He's joined on this one by an assortment of musical cohorts. Their appearances are subtle, always gracing the heart of the songs. Charlie Patton's "Some of These Days" is rendered with light parlor room flourish, while Blind Willie Johnson's "Trouble Soon Be Over" is proudly funky, recalling Muldaur's time with Paul Butterfield in the band Better Days. The album closes with Muldaur and his guitar alone, singing the conclusion to his "Got to Find Blind Lemon," a saga which began on his previous release. As Richard Thompson has said, "There are only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them." SKU: 1046607

King Of Rock [Remastered]
Run-DMC: Joseph "Run" Simmons, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels (rap vocals); Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell (scratches). Additional personnel includes: Yellowman (vocals); Eddie Martinez, Bobby Gass, Rick Rubin, Larry Smith, Davy-D (guitar); Sam Jacobs (percussion); Orange Krush. Though RUN-DMC's follow-up to KING OF ROCK, RAISING HELL, would propel the trio to worldwide fame, KING OF ROCK wasa glimpse of things to come. With the rock guitars of "King of Rock," RUN-DMC was laying the groundwork for the classic cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way." One of the first rap videos to go into full rotation on MTV, "King of Rock" has become a classic song and one of RUN-DMC's signature phrases. KING OF ROCK also includes "Rock the House," "You Talk too Much," and "Can You Rock It Like This." In its lyrical and musical lexicon, the album bears the sheen of the time in which it was produced--KING OF ROCK is all about two MCs telling their fans why they're rap royalty. SKU: 1087165

Love Light
Personnel: Dennis Brown (vocals, guitar); Noel Balley, Willie Lindo (guitar); Dean Fraser, David Madden, Danny Walters (horns); Robert Lyn, Ansel Collins, Keith Sterling, Gladstone Anderson (keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare, Flabba Hunt (bass); Style (drums); Sticky, Skully (percussion). Recorded at Joe Gibbs Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Although Dennis Brown mostly worked in the more electronic dancehall reggae style in the 1990s--indeed, he was pretty much the only traditional reggae singer of the 1970s to be able to make the transition--LOVE LIGHT is a traditional, bass-heavy reggae album. Produced by thelegendary Joe Gibbs, the recording is an organic-sounding player's album. The eight lengthy songs open up into supple, soulful grooves, with guitars--one played by Brown, unlike on his dancehall albums--and percussion adding to the thick rhythms powered by Robbie Shakespeare's thundering yet melodic bass. Horns, organ and electric piano add to the sound, making LOVE LIGHT sound almost like one of Brown's mid-1970s classics. "A Little Bit More" and a stunning reworking of Leadbelly's "Little Village," one of Brown's most inspired covers, are the highlights. Overall, this is one of Brown's strongest efforts of the 1990s. Welcome To My Dream [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. MC 900 Foot Jesus: Mark Griffin (vocals, guitar, trumpet, keyboards). Additional personnel: Chris McGuire (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone);Elon Bradford (Crucial Reed Technology); Steve Dirkx (bass); Al Emert (drums); Mike Dillon (congas, percussion); Patrick Rollins (turntables). WELCOME TO MY DREAM, by Texas artist Mark Griffin, better known as MC 900 Ft Jesus, is a collection of compositions that crosses musical and cultural borders while maintaining a unified sound and a singularity of purpose. The easy tag to lay on Griffin would be that of a "white rapper," but that would be both unfair and misleading. True, most of the lyrics here are delivered in a syncopated, urgent chant, but that's where the similarities between this and standard hip-hop end. Instead of the gangster bravado or carnal boasting that many rappers indulge in, Griffin combines a sense of alienation with a poetic craftsmanship that renders his paranoiac shaggy-dog tales doubly arresting. His odd-man-out persona sometimes recalls the stance of late-'50s Beat poetry, an influence laid bare on "Dali's Handgun," with Ginsberg-like raving over acoustic percussion. Griffin's poetic ambitions are possessed of a more modern air on "Hearing Voices in One's Head" and the starkly chilling "Falling Elevators," which find the narrator in a disaffected reverie that signifies without the aid of rhyme or meter. NWA Legacy Vol.2, The [PA]
When the hardcore hip-hop collective known as N.W.A. first appeared on the scene in the '80s, they blew their fair share of minds. Before this Compton crew arrived, no one had heard such mind-blowing beats married to such unapologetically sociopathic lyrics. The combined talents of Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and Dr. Dre made N.W.A. the standard by which all subsequent gangsta rap (and indeed many other hip-hop subgenres) would be judged. Some 14years down the road, some members of the crew have gone on to even more successful solo careers, while others (namely Eazy-E) passed away too soon. But the group's glory days are both remembered and celebrated on this compilation. Featured here are a combination of solo tracks from the group members, a couple of full-fledged N.W.A. tracks, and offerings from peers and admirers ranging from Kurupt to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, often with participation from Snoop, Eazy, or Dre. Whatever the format, you can rest assured that this disc is pure gangsta from start to finish. SKU: 1077430

Vulnerable (+DVD)
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Tricky (vocals, keyboards, bass, drums); Costanza (vocals, guitar); Liz Constantine (vocals); Mario Munoz, Mark Thwaite (guitar); Gareth Bowen (keyboards); Steve Loria, Wayne Nunes (bass); Perry Melius (drums, background vocals); Dave Whitman (programming); Mike Black (background vocals). After a number of collaborative, guest-star-studded albums, Tricky has finally gone back to the basics with VUNERABLE. Replacing his former muse Martina Topley Bird is Constanza, whose breathy voice sounds remarkably like both her precursor and ex-Golden Palomino Lori Carson. An album in the moldof his acclaimed debut MAXINQUAYE, this outing features rock-tinged trip-hop with Constanza's airy singing often doubled by Tricky's spoken-word accompaniment. In the resulting sea of submerged beats, chilled-out covers of XTC's "Dear God" and the Cure's "The Love Cats" surface, blending well with tracks such as "Stay," "Antimatter," and "Wait for God." Tricky also cuts loose on a handful of guitar-heavy tracks, including "How High," "Moody," and "Where I'm From." Although the apocalyptic tones of his first few releases are largely absent, VUNERABLE shows that Tricky still has an edge, and continues to deftly span the genres of pop, hip-hop, electronica, and rock. Antichrist Superstar
Marilyn Manson: Marilyn Manson (vocals, guitar, pan flute); Twiggy Ramirez (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Zim Zum (guitar); M.W. Gacy (keyboards); Ginger Fish (drums, programming). Additional personnel includes: Trent Reznor (guitar, Fender Rhodes, Mellotron, programming); Dave "Rave" Ogilvie (programming). Producers include: Trent Reznor, Dave Ogilvie, M. Manson. Engineers include: Dave "Rave" Ogilvie. The latest volley in industrial music's invasion of the mainstream, shock-rock band Marilyn Manson revels in the perverse, the unpleasant and the grotesque, championing hate, alienation and negativity with the samefervor with which happy-face troubadours of the '70s promoted sunshine, peace and happiness. The band's music owes a great deal to labelmates Nine Inch Nails, incorporating processed vocals, screeching electronics and enough bad attitude to bring even Norman Vincent Peale down. But rather than follow Trent Reznor down the path of sonic experimentation, Marilyn Manson establishes an unrelenting, grungy, guitar-driven attack that makes Ministry and The Butthole Surfers sound "unplugged." ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR is not an album for everyone. It is the aural equivalent of root canal without novocaine. Marilyn Manson creates a harsh, nightmarish soundscape to symbolize all that is evil and corrupt in contemporary society. There can be no such thing as a casual listen to ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR's 16 scabrous tracks, and no listener will come away unscathed. SKU: 1003763

Passe Avant
Jacqui McShee's Pentangle: Jacqui McShee (vocals, hand claps); Spencer Cozens (vocals, piano, keyboards, hand claps, programming); Alan Thompson (acoustic guitar, bass); Jerry Underwood (soprano & tenor saxophones); Gerry Conway (drums, dhumbec, percussion, hand claps, programming). Additional personnel: John Giblin (acoustic & electric basses); Miles Bould (percussion); Alan Randall (hand claps). Producers: Jacqui McShee, Gerry Conway, Spencer Cozens. Recorded from January to March 1998. In the late '60s/early '70s, Pentangle stood at the forefront of British folk-rock. The band's unique style imaginatively combined an improvisational, jazzy aesthetic with the sound practiced by bands like Fairport Convention. On this '98 release only singer McShee is left from the original lineup, but PASSE AVANT does the Pentangle legacy proud, updating British folk traditions for the present day. As ever, McShee's voice is a marvel, strong but understated and full of quiet character. Some 30 years down the road, her singing shows not a single sign of wear. To this new Pentangle's credit, they don't try to recreate the classic Pentangle sound. Instead, they bring old British folk styles into the '90s, making effective, subtle use of electronics toprovide the heady atmosphere that marks PASSE AVANT as an album squarely in the grand Pentangle tradition of mixing past with present. From Nashville To Memphis (The Essential 1960's Masters Vol.1)
Full title: From Nashville To Memphis: The Essential 60's Masters I. FROM NASHVILLE TO MEMPHIS contains 130 tracks (19 previously unreleased) and a 94-page booklet with a complete '60s discography, session notes and many rare photos. It comes with a sheet of color stamps depicting 36 Presley album covers from the '60s. Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar, piano); The Jordanaires, Charlie Hodge, Millie Kirkham, Joe Babcock, The Imperials, June Page, Dolores Edgin, Sandy Posey, Mary Greene, Mary Holladay, Donna Thatcher, Susan Pilikington, Sonja Montgomery, Hurshel Wiginton, Frank Sinatra (vocals); Scotty Moore, Harold Bradley, Neal Matthews, Jerry Kennedy, Chip Young, Jerry Reed (guitar); Charlie McCoy (guitar, harmonica, organ, bass); Grady Martin (guitar, vibraphone); Hank Garland (guitar, electric bass); Pete Drake, John Hughey (steel guitar); Ed Kollis (harmonica); Gordon Stoker (accordion, piano); Boots Randolph (saxophone, vibraphone, shakers, claves); Rufus Long (saxophone); Ray Stevens (trumpet); The Memphis Horns (horns); Floyd Cramer, Henry Slaughter, David Briggs (piano, organ); Ronnie Milsap, Bobby Wood (piano); Bobby Emmons (organ); Bob Moore, Henry Strzelecki, Tommy Cogbill, Mike Leech (bass); D.J. Fontana, Gene Chrisman (drums); Buddy Harman (drums, tympani). Compilation Producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Engineers include: Bill Porter, Ron Steele, Jim Malloy. Principally recorded at RCA's Studio B, Nashville, Tennessee and American Studios, Memphis, Tennessee between March 20, 1960 and February 22, 1969. Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick. Digitally Remastered by Dick Baxter (BMG Recording Studios, New York). Unlike its predecessor THE COMPLETE 50'S MASTERS, the '60s box set FROM NASHVILLE TO MEMPHIS does not include all of Elvis Presley's recordings from a single decade. To whittle the set down to a manageable five discs, RCA reissued Presley's movie soundtracks and gospel recordings separately, focusing this set instead on Elvis' secular single and album releases. The set starts promisingly with Presley's brilliant first post-Army recordings, originally released on the album ELVIS IS BACK! The middle discs in the set, however, demonstrate that at some point in the early Sixties Elvis stopped receiving publishers' best material. The singing is still great, but too many of the songs are as mediocre as Presley's soundtracks of the period. Fortunately, the story told by FROM NASHVILLE TO MEMPHIS has a happy ending, as the set wraps up with the King's triumphant American Studio recordings, which include the hits "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds." Even Presley's lean years yieldedtheir share of great recordings, making FROM NASHVILLE TO MEMPHIS an essential addition to any serious music fan's collection. SKU: 1002446

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, guitars, keyboards); Benmobt Tench (vocals, keyboards); Howie Epstein (vocals, bass); Stan Lynch (vocals, drums); Mike Campbell (guitar, keyboards, bass). Producers include: Rick Rubin, Jimmy Iovine, David A. Stewart, Mike Campbell, Jeff Lynne. Digitally remasteredby Joe Gastwirt (Oceanview, Los Angeles, California). Hailing from the state of Florida, singer-songwriter Tom Petty has come to epitomize a new rootsy style of California rock'n'roll. Rhythmically, the music harkens back to the basic crunch of the Rolling Stones and the dancing pop of the Beatles, while Petty's gravelly vocals and sing-song narrative style suggest roots in the folk-blues Americana of Bob Dylan. Years before R.E.M. returned to the jangly, Rickenbacker-infected timbre of the Byrds, Petty's nasal delivery and bell-like mix of guitars and vocal harmonies gave new life to the atmospheric ballad style of Roger McGuinn, David Crosby and company. GREATEST HITS is evenly divided between material from Petty's mid-'70s/early '80s breakthrough and the more mature work he's been doing with producer Jeff Lynne since 1989's FULL MOON FEVER. The craft and content of his songwriting has grown more relaxed and accomplished with each passing album, whether alone or in tandem with Lynne and long-time lead guitarist Mike Campbell. Thus we move from the hard-churning outsider's anthem of "Refugee" with Benmont Tench's pulsing Hammond organ (from 1979's DAMN THE TORPEDOES), to the moody Southern California metaphors of the transplanted rock exiles and doomed romantics who populate "Free Fallin'" and "Learning To Fly"--all examples of Petty's timeless, evocative songwriting. Loose Screw
The Pretenders: Chrissie Hynde (vocals, guitar); Adam Seymour (guitar, background vocals); Andy Hobson (bass); Martin Chambers (drums). Additional personnel includes: The Duke Quartet (strings); Kevin Bacon (bass). The 21st-century version of the Pretenders may still be ably fronted by Chrissie Hynde and percussively supported by drum king Martin Chambers, but LOOSE SCREW represents both a move to a new label and flirtations with some new sounds. Sure, the opener "Lie To Me" is not a million miles from "Precious" or any of the other early rockers, and ballads "Saving Grace" and "The Losing" don't exactly discourage comparisons to the band's 1994 hit "I'll Stand By You," but that's where the similarities end. As far as the rest of the album goes, it sounds like Chrissie and company (guitar whiz Adam Seymour is still aboard, by the way) have been spending a lot of time listening to classic reggae, dub, and R&B records. Anyone familiar with Chambers's prowess can predict the ease with which he approaches these idioms. Lyrically, Hynde is in a more reflective/introspective mode than on some of her previous albums, but did you really expect (orwant) to hear endless variations on "Brass in Pocket" ad infinitum? Pan American
Pan American includes: Mark Nelson. Additional personnel: Peter Neff (dulcimer); Chris Gallo (drums); Jim Thompson (bongos). Engineers include: John Morand, Mike Hearst. Brainchild of Labradford guitarist/vocalist, Mark Nelson, Pan American made its quiescent debut in 1998 with this self-titled nine song EP. Minimal and beautiful, Pan American utilizes bare melodies to construct a soundscape of electronica and dub mixed with drums, guitar and keyboard. On PAN AMERICAN, washes of implied beats and skeletons of melody refract images of post-rock, creating the abstract from the familiar. It's not until "Lent" that the guitar pushes aside the curtain of electronics to illuminate the tuneful path. Haunting keyboard chords tempt the listener on, as shadows of voices warn of the watery digital sounds. Like in dub music, several layers thicken the sound, but recurring melodies keep it light. In "Tract," this technique is used, with the keyboard notes reminiscent of the same chords in "Lent." These simple, layered,drone-like abstractions are Nelson's freshman effort, paving the way for future dark intelligentica. SKU: 5068470
