Personnel includes: David Byrne (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, loops); Ashley D. Horne, Carlos Baptiste (violin); Juliet Haffner (viola); Pierre La Roux (fiddle); Nicholas Holland (cello); Ed Calle (saxophone); Dana Teboe (trombone); Mark Mothersbaugh (synthesizer, samples); Hahn Rowe, Mark Saunders (keyboards); Greg Cohen (acoustic bass); Jerry Casale (bass, background vocals); Joe Galdo (drums, percussion); Paula Cole, Betty Wright (background vocals). Morcheeba: Skye Edwards, Paul Godfrey, Ross Godfrey. The Balanescu Quartet: Alexander Balanescu, Clare Connors, Paul Martin, Nicholas Holland. The Black Cat Orchestra: Lori Goldston, Russ Meltzer, Don Crevie, Scott Granlund, Kyle Hanson, Matthew Sperry, Joseph Zajonc, Ed Pias. Producers: David Byrne, Moorcheeba, Joe Galdo. Engineers include: Pete Norris, Ceasar Sogbe, Hahn Rowe. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. David Byrne's years of sponging up various musical styles and his sharp, eccentric, occasionally bleak sense of humor make for an outrageously eclectic album, with several producers, and collaborators as diverse as Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale of Devo (lending their uniquely mechanical, robotic sound to "Wicked Little Doll"), trip-hoppers Morcheeba, and pop siren Paula Cole. FEELINGS is a splendid patchwork of an album. "Gates of Paradise" takes a country & western song and mixes in a huge helping oftrip hop, a dash of jungle music, and a pinch of punk. "Daddy Go Down" has a curious blend of Indian sitar, Cajun fiddles, and hip-hop scratching. The trippy, lighthearted sound offsets cynical lyrics and an intriguingly dark underbelly. SKU: 1000171

Freedom
Personnel: Andy Griggs (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dan Dugmore (acoustic, electric, slide & steel guitars, dobro, bass); Tom Keifer (electric guitar, background vocals); David Grissom, Brent Wilson, Michael Landau, Kenny Vaughn (electric guitar); Stuart Duncan (mandolin, fiddle); Ron Block, Charles Cushman (banjo); Jimmy Nichols (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Glenn Worf, Michael Rhodes (bass); Kenny Aronoff (drums); Martina McBride, David Lee Murphy, Lonnie Wilson, Melinda Norris, Neil Thrasher, Wes Hightower (background vocals). Recorded at Emerald Studios and Starstruck Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Andy Griggs escaped a life stacking shelves at Sam's Wholesale Club with a hot debut album, YOU WON'T EVER BE LONELY, and with his follow-up FREEDOM consolidates a style that, while respecting the Nashville bottom line, frequently branches out into outlaw country. "Practice Life" is a wake-up call to couch potatoes everywhere, while "Custom Made" has no-brainer country hit written all over it. Griggs's one-two punch of traditional country and hard-edged rock & roll, blending high-class production values with gritty, amusing lyrics and raunchy musicianship, is a winning formula that harks back to the time before Nashville came to depend on consumer research for its hits. Paradoxically, in its eschewing of blatant hit-seeking, FREEDOM sounds simultaneously more commercial and more original than most of Music City's recent output. Griggs's voice is classic country, and he's ably assisted by guests Martina McBride (who's been a co-conspirator ever since Griggs arrivedin Nashville) and Tom Keifer. Songs like the "Blanket on the Ground"-like "Tonight I Wanna Be Your Man" ("all week I've been your husband/tonight I wanna be your man") fulfill the Nashville Prime Directive of big-time chick-appeal while avoiding the usual mawkishness of such efforts. Live In Stockholm 1960 Complete
Full title: In Stockholm 1960 Complete With John Coltrane & Sonny Stitt. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Sonny Stitt (alto & tenor saxophones); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Jimmy Cobb (drums). Recorded live at the Concert Hall, Stockholm, Sweden on March 22 & October 13, 1960. Includes liner notes by Jan Lohmann. Digitally remastered by Torbjorn Samuelsson (Digitalfabriken). The Swedishlabel Dragon released two Miles Davis Quintet live shows in their entirety on this deluxe three-CD set. This was a unique time for Miles--his music was in the transitional period between playing standards over given chord patterns ("On Green Dolphin Street") and improvising more freely with the modal approach ("So What,""All Blues") that would be so influential in '60s and '70s jazz and experimental rock. John Coltrane was nearing the end of his stay with Miles' band. Many would try to fill his shoes, including alto & tenor sax legend Sonny Stitt. The fact that this line-up would never record in the studio makes this set all the more valuable. All the players are at their peaks here, and the sound quality, though not up to today's digital standards, is excellent (you can feel Chambers' bass playing). Fans of Miles, Trane, Stitt and outstanding jazz rejoice SKU: 6273365

Pretender, The
Personnel includes: Jackson Browne (vocals, acoustic guitar); Fred Tackett (acoustic & electric guitars); Luis F. Damian (guitar, vijuella, background vocals); Waddy Wachtel (guitar); Roberto Gutierrez (guitaron, violin, background vocals); Arthur Gerst (harp, background vocals); Chuck Finley, Dick Hyde, Quitman Dennit (horns); Roy Bittan, Craig Doerge (piano); Mike Utley (organ); Bob Glaub, Chuck Rainey, Leland Sklar (bass); Russell Kunkel, Jeff Porcaro (drums); Gary Coleman (percussion); Rosemary Butler, Jon Landau (background vocals); Albert Lee, Jim Horn, Billy Payne, John David Souther. Recorded at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California. Includes a poem by Pablo Neruda. Jackson Browne was oneof the leading singer/songwriters of the '70s, and THE PRETENDER, his fourth album, under the supervision of Bruce Springsteen's producer, Jon Landau, remains his definitive '70s record. Part of the cadre of L.A. musicians that included the Eagles, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt, Browne stood out as the spokesman for baby boomer angst. This low-key rocker sings in a plaintive tone, concentrating more on lyrics than melody. But his music is complicated and off the beaten-path of standard folk-rock songwriting, sometimes sounding like the soulful Van Morrison, especially on "Your Bright Baby Blues." The title track is a scornful indictment of middle-class America, while "Linda Paloma," led by a Latin beat and harp, is a dreamy South-Of-The-Border love song. Many tracks are just plain confessional and primal. "Daddy's Tune" deals with issues regarding his father ("...make room for my 45's along beside your 78's...nothing survives, but the way we live our lives...") and is a wonderful companion to "The Only Child," a love song to his child. Lost love is a common theme, and the nostalgic "Sleep's Dark And Silent Gate" ("...I don't know what love has to do with happiness...") is yet another deep reflection into his soul. Musically, "Here Come Those Tears Again" is one of the most accessible and well-rounded songs on the album, and this time the lost lover wants to come back. The opening cut, "The Fuse," sums up his quest for salvation from his existential dilemmas. SKU: 1074051

Cheer Up
Reel Big Fish: Aaron Barrett (vocals, strings); Scott Klopfenstein (vocals, guitar, electric piano, trumpet); Carlos de la Garza (drums, percussion); Dan Regan (trombone, special effects); Matt Wong (bass). Additional personnel: Travis Werts (Flugalhorn); Tyler Jones (trumpet); Iki Levy (percussion, samples); Ryland Steen (percussion); Nic Tenbroek, Gordie Johnson. Producers: Aaron Barrett, Scott Klopfenstein, Gordie Johnson. Recorded at Sound Factory, Paramount Studios, Grand Masters, Hollywood, California, Jake's Place, Studio City, California, Brando's Paradise, San Gabriel, California and World Class Audio, Anaheim, California. Formed in Southern California in the early '90s, Reel Big Fish has slowly gathered a massive following by virtue of a combination of relentless touring and relentlessly peppy albums, following in the wake of such erstwhile ska/punk bands as No Doubt. While Reel Big Fish lack a front person with the obvious charms of Gwen Stefani, they plough an irresistible Bare Naked Ladies-type furrow with energetic frat-boy anthems such as "Ban the Tube Top" ("beautiful girl, ugly shirt--you are a fashion red alert") and the ska/R&B flavored "Suckers." There's no denying the attraction of sardonic lyrics set to upbeat rhythms, a formula the Fish stick to throughout CHEER UP! that hits home time and again, in songs such as "What Are Friends For," and "Dateless Losers," a self-explanatory frenetic excursion through many solitary Friday nights--("we're not so bad you know, but you won't give us a chance," they whine) that should find an echo in the hearts of dateless Reel Big Fish fans everywhere. With its refusal to take itself too seriously and its irrepressibly smart pop hooks, CHEER UP! is a joyous soundtrackto an endless summer. SKU: 1074091

Amazing Grace (The Complete Gospel Recordings)
Full title: Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings. Personnel: Aretha Franklin (vocals, arranger, piano, celeste); Rev. James Cleveland (vocals, director, piano); Southern California Community Choir (vocals); Cornell Dupree (guitar); Ken Lupper (organ); Chuck Rainey (bass); Bernard Purdie (drums); Pancho Morales (congas). Producers: Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, Aretha Franklin. Reissue producers: Patrick Milligan, Reggie Collins. This edition of AMAZING GRACE contains two unedited live performances recorded at New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, Los Angeles, California on January 13-14, 1972. Includes liner notes by David Nathan, Reggie Collins & Patrick Milligan. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Long before she ascended the throne and donned the mantle of the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin was a child of the church. Franklin's pedigree demanded such, since her father was the famous Reverend C.L. Franklin, and her mother was herself a gospel singer. AMAZING GRACE was Lady Soul's return to her roots after hitting the secular stride of her fantastic strings ofalbums on Atlantic. Recorded over two days at Los Angeles' New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, AMAZING GRACE finds Franklin backed by her studio band and joined by a choir led by family friend and gospel icon James Cleveland. Franklin's singing is unfettered and filled with a spirit not heard in her secular material. Most interesting is her seamless choice of material. She gives pop songs by Marvin Gaye ("Wholy Holy") and Carole King ("You've Got A Friend") a spiritual sheen, placing them alongside more traditional fare by Clara Ward ("How I Got Over") and Thomas Dorsey ("Precious Lord, Take My Hand"). Equally impressive are Franklin's rich arrangements, her interaction with the Southern California Community Choir, and her often overlooked piano playing on such songs as "Never Grow Old." El Baile Aleman (A Tribute To Kraftwerk)
Senor Coconut Y Su Conjunto includes: Atom Heart. Recorded in 1999. Includes liner notes by Lazlo Curas. For the uninformed, Senor Coconut is none other than electronix master (and world-weary traveler) Atom Heart (real name: Uwe Schmidt), dancing his way into the Latin subconscious. EL BAILE ALEMAN is a hoot-and-a-half: Latin covers of Kraftwerk tunes, computer music interpreted as faux-acousticmusic, if the mind can conceive of such a thing. Actually, trickster Schmidt programmed the whole enchilada alone (with the exception of some choice vocal parts), transposing Kraftwerk byte-for-byte into a soundfield of maracas, congas, shakers, and vibes-a-go-go. Even though the music is played straight, the air of whimsy and sheer ingeniousness will make you cackle and grin from ear to ear. "Tour De France" is redone as a hyper-speed merengue, "Homecomputer" as the tarantella from Titan. Schmidt renders "Showroom Dummies" positively "baroquian," as done by Tito Puente drowning in acid. EL BAILE ALEMAN is a feast for the senses, a smorgasbord of sonic samba and a coup de grace of calliopes and circus shrieks. Mui excellente! SKU: 1073766

Say It Like You Mean It
Debut full-length from Churchville, PA emo-pop-punk act, following 2001's 'With Hopes of Starting Over' EP. Recorded with cult producer Mark Trombino (Blink 182, Finch, Jimmy Eat World). SKU: 1080418

Do You Know
Personnel includes: Michelle Williams (vocals); Eric Dawkins (vocals, various instruments); AnsonDawkins, Kelly Rowland, Beyonce Knowles (vocals); Tommy Sims (acoustic & electric guitar, Clavinet, acoustic bass, drums, background vocals); Mike Ripol (acoustic guitar); Raymond "Shawn" Hinton (guitar); Mike Haynes, Steve Patrick, Barry Green (horns); Andy Selby (keyboards, drums); Derrik "Swoll" Ray (bass); Curtis Zakery, Michael Weatherspoon (drums); Ken Lewis (percussion); Jesse Campbell, Felicia East (background vocals). Producers include: Tommy Sims, Dawkins & Dawkins, Beyonce Knowles, Erron Williams, Eric Pullins. Like her 2002 gospel-informed album, HEART TO YOURS, Michelle Williams's 2004 follow-up, DO YOU KNOW, found the Destiny's Child member continuing to use her faith as a guide into the waters of solo artistry. Working with a wide array of producers including Tommy Sims (CeCe Winans)and Anson and Eric Dawkins (Tyrese), Williams is subtly more up-tempo than on her debut. The Brazilian-flavored "Purpose in Your Storm," the snappy urban bounce of "The Incident," and the mid-tempo strut of "My Only Love Is You" all point to an artist with a considerable amount of self-assurance. Not surprisingly, Williams is never far from the roots that extend back to her day job in Destiny's Child, thanks to the harmony-soaked ballad "I Know," (featuring cameos by group members Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland) and "The Movement," a sultry number penned and produced by Beyonce's little sister Solange. As a nascent Broadway star with her turn in Aida, Williams also reveals her knack for ballads, with the breathy "15 Minutes" and the uplifting testimonial "Rescue My Heart." SKU: 6546983

Sopranos, The (Peppers & Eggs)
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. PEPPERS & EGGS was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. For the second installment of songs from his hit series, SOPRANOS creator David Chase once again casts his net far and wide in compiling a fascinating cross-section of artists. Kicking off with an inspired fusion of the Police's creepy stalker ode "Every Breath You Take" and Henry Mancini's classic noir instrumental "Peter Gunn," Chase wanders all over the musical map, taking in styles as varied as Kasey Chambers' alt-country "The Captain," the classic soul of Otis Redding's "My Lover's Prayer," the lush, Dido-flavored electro-pop of "Certamente," and Cecilia Bartoli's impassioned performance of Vivaldi's "Sposa Son Disprezzata." Chase keeps the Rat Pack vibe going by including Cake's rumbling tribute to the Chairman Of The Board ("Frank Sinatra"), while Hoboken's favorite son himself delivers the Brazilian-flavored "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," and Bob Dylan cuts a bouncy take of Dean Martin's "Return to Me." Loyal soldiers and series cast members Miami Steve Van Zandt and Dominic Chianese also contribute to the musical proceedings. The E Streeter and his band The Lost Boys rip into the Boss-like rocker "Affection," while Chianese croons and whistles his way throughthe Italian folk song "Core'Ngrato." SKU: 1060814

Billy Talent
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Billy Talent: Benjamin Kowalewicz (vocals); Ian D'Sa (guitar, background vocals); Jonathan Gallant (bass, background vocals); Aaron Solowoniuk (drums). Recorded at The factory, Vancouver, Canada and A Room Full Of Stuff, Toronto, Canada. The self-titled debut album from Canadian pop-punkers Billy Talent finds the group foregoing the usual sing-song jokiness of bands like Blink 182 in favor of an old school approach that recalls everything fromthe original British punk of the Buzzcocks to 1980s L.A. hardcore. Charismatic lead vocalist Benjamin Kowalewicz has a strident delivery that combines the in-your-face whine of vintage Jello Biafra with the anthemic shouts of Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell. Meanwhile, the rest of the band pounds away with a clean guitar-driven attack that often sounds like neo-garage rock of the Strokes/Vines/Flaming Sideburns variety, but with considerably more chops. Overall, BILLY TALENT is the work of an unusually tight and powerful band that knows its history but is more than creative enough to avoid mere revivalism. SKU: 1086195

Workingman's Dead (Expanded And Remastered)
Also available with AMERICAN BEAUTY on one cassette (Warner Bros. 23706). NOTES: Contains the hidden track "Workingman's Dead Radio Spot" which follows "Uncle John's Band," live version. Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia (vocals, acoustic, electric & pedal steel guitars); Bob Weir (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, keyboards); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Tom Constanten (keyboards); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Additional personnel: David Nelson (acoustic guitar), Producers: Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor, The Grateful Dead. Recorded at Pacific High Recording Studios, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Steve Silberman. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. The Grateful Dead's first four albums reinforced their stature as a performing group, with a loose improvisational feel rooted in the blues, rock & roll, and modern jazz. But withthe 1970 release of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD, Garcia, Weir, Lesh, McKernan, Kreutzmann, and Hart reined in their many spatial musical elements and found their true stylistic niche in the studio with an engaging blend of country, blues, and folk. Where earlier studio releases strove to recreate the kind of freeform group improvisations that won the Dead a fanatical cult following in the Bay area, WORKINGMAN'S DEAD drew upon a rural American vernacular that was in many ways analogous to that of the Band. The resulting music has a rootsy, timeless quality, with tight instrumental arrangements, concise solo breaks, and a carefully wrought style of vocal harmonizing. The Dead won extensive airplay with tuneful songs like "Uncle John's Band" and "Casey Jones," while expanding their following well beyond San Francisco. Garcia's slithering pedal steel counterpoint and twangy banjo rolls make for a charismatic new style of bluegrass on "Dire Wolf" and "Cumberland Blues," while "New Speedway Boogie," featuring some of Robert Hunter's best lyrics, is a pointed personal metaphor for the tragic chaos at Altamont the summer before.
