Back To Mine (Compiled By Tricky)
This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Tricky. This part of DMC's Back To Mine DJ series. DJ: Tricky. For his entry in DMC's BACK TO MINE series, trip-hop godfather Tricky--whose strung-out beats and smoke-damaged vocals are quintessential late-night-mix material--decides to abandon chill-out DJ stylings in favor of a more eclectic selection. Things kick off with the Cure's "Lullaby" seamlessly flowing intoRadanna's "How We Ride" (replete with a whispered Tricky vocal), which then keeps rolling right into an old-school Eric B. & Rakim rap ("My Melody"). After that, the bad boy of Bristol mixes disparate tracks by Dr. John, Morphine, the Buzzcocks, Le Tigre, and Kate Bush, along with songs by his proteges Costanza and Liz Densmore, for an effect that's strikingly dynamic. The mix is great throughout, and Tricky's choices and sequencing are always inspired, as best exemplified by the presence of "My Funny Valentine" towards the end of the album, with Chet Baker crooning in the midst of more modern tunes as if he's suspended in time. Dr. Feelgood (Expanded) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which includes both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Motley Crue: Vince Neil (vocals, shaker); Mick Mars (guitar, background vocals); Nikki Sixx (piano, organ, bass, background vocals); Tommy Lee (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Steven Tyler, Bryan Adams, Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Skid Row (background vocals). Principally recorded at Little Mountain Sound Studios, Vancouver, Canada in 1989. Includes liner notes by Alan K. Stout. Motley Crue's biggest seller, DR. FEELGOOD is the best example of Beyond Music's CRUCIAL CRUE seriesreissue of the band's catalog. A meaty and in-your-face digitally remastered sound, with added extras of four demos and a hitherto-unreleased track, improve this title greatly. Superlative liner notes are also included. Riding a string of platinum releases, Motley Crue here employed producer Bob Rock to help achieve the blockbuster sound that accompanied their glam metal image; the title track kicks in with a ferocity not heard since SHOUT AT THE DEVIL. Drummer Tommy Lee's shuffle propels "Kickstart My Heart," while singer Vince Neil wails to good effect on the radio-friendly "Without You." Crowd favorite "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" sensitively explores lesbianism, while the politically incorrect "She Goes Down" features guest vocals by Cheap Trick's Robin Zander. Although album closer "Time for Change" proposes a better future through social action, don't look for a deep message on DR. FEELGOOD. This is perfect pop metal. SKU: 1084750

Winelight [Digipak]
WINELIGHT, featuring the track "Just The Two Of Us," went platinum and garnered two Grammy awards. Personnel: Grover Washington, Jr. (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones); Bill Withers (vocals); Paul Griffin, Richard Tee (Fender Rhodes); Raymond Chew (Clavinet); Bill Eaton, Ed Walsh (synthesizer); Eric Gale (guitar); Marcus Miller (bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Robert Greenidge (steel drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion); Hilda Harris, Yvonne Lewis, Ullanda McCullough (background vocals). Producers: Grover Washington, Jr, Ralph MacDonald. Recorded in June and July 1980. Also available with COME MORNING on 1 cassette. WINELIGHT is probably one of Grover Washington's best-loved albums. It includes Bill Withers' Grammy Award winning song "Just the Two of Us," and other well-executed smooth jazz compositions. Washington has long been one of the leaders in R&B-influenced jazz, and this album consolidates his claim to fame as one of the fathers of this oftenmisunderstood sub-genre. Steve Gadd's smart drumming gives each song a relaxed, infectious groove. The saxophonist really unwinds on tunes such as "Let it Flow (for "Dr. J.)" and "Make Me a Memory (Sad Samba)," improvising over a soulful blend of blues, jazz, and pop, a combination both accessible to mainstream pop listeners and musically compelling to jazz fans. Abba Gold Vol.1 (Greatest Hits)
ABBA: Bjorn Ulvaeus (vocals, guitar); Benny Andersson (vocals, keyboards); Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog (vocals). Producers: Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus. Compilation producer: Chris Griffin. Includes liner notes by John Tobler. Digitally remastered by Michael B.Tretow (Polar Studios). In seemingly random order, GOLD contains fourteen of Abba's twenty American hits (the remainder are on MORE ABBA GOLD); which is to say, it contains fourteen of the most delectable pop productions of the '70s and early '80s. "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and the other landmarks of upbeat melancholy are complex concoctions--all layered harmonies and brilliant keyboard arrangements. These songs don't easily fit into any pop timeline, which may be why Abba received much of their acclaim long after breaking up. What may have seemed like Euro-pop fluff in its day, has been revealed by time to be truly classic studio pop. The Swedish band's songs had show-tune and '60s-pop roots, skirted around the edge of disco, and were an unspoken influence on new wave. Without them, Madonna's very existence would be highly unlikely. With its Latin beat and gospel harmonies, "Lay Your Love All Over Me," one of the five songs here that didn't chart in the U.S., sounds like the very source of "Like A Prayer." Like Madonna, Abba had a grandiose vision of pop's place in the world--"who could live without it, I ask in all honesty," is how they put it in "Thank You For The Music," their Broadway-like farewell gesture. Hearing these singles, its hard to imagine anyone ever did. SKU: 3100269

No More Drama
This version contains a P. Diddy/Mario Winans remix of the song, "No More Drama." Personnel includes: Mary J. Blige (vocals); Eve, P. Diddy, Pharrell Williams, Lenny Kravitz, Marshane Smith, Ja Rule, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot. Producers include: Bryan Peguero, Chucky Thompson, Dame Grease, Dr. Dre, Floyd Howard. "He Think I Don't Know" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. From P Diddy to Lenny Kravitz, a plethora of producers and guest stars graces this updated, remix-added version of Mary J. Blige's 2001 NO MORE DRAMA, a situation usually signaling a dearth of creativity on behalf of the featured artist. Fortunately that's not the case here. Blige is fully in control, from a lyrical reworking of the '70s Al Green classic "Simply Beautiful" entitled "PMS," which could well become an anthem for women sufferingfrom those disabling symptoms, to the Dr. Dre-produced "Family Affair," in which this classic R&B singer self-confidently modernizes her image for the J-Lo generation. "He Think I Don't Know" is vintage Blige, her roots firmly in late-'70s deep soul, while the autobiographical "Where I've Been" features Eve paying homage to a woman who's struggled through poverty and drug addiction and come out the other side a stronger person. This is a masterful effort that finds Mary J. Blige successfully updating her sound while retaining the musical depth that got her where she is today. SKU: 1070260

Power To Believe, The
King Crimson: Adrian Belew (vocals, guitar); Trey Gunn (guitar, fretless bass); Robert Fripp (guitar); Pat Mastelotto (drums, programming). Additional personnel: Tim Faulkner (spoken vocals); Machine (programming). King Crimson guitarist/founder Robert Fripp's famous quote that "King Crimson is a way of doing things" has seldom seemed truer than on THE POWER TO BELIEVE. The group's second studio album as a quartet in the wake of old hands Tony Levin and Bill Bruford's departure fits fully into the ever-shifting but consistently regenerative Crimson continuum. "Level Five" and the multi-part title track are pounding, counterpoint-filled tunes that hark back to Crimson's oft-revisited touchstone "Larks Tongues in Aspic." Along the way, Fripp, Adrian Belew and company also manage to venture more fully than ever into the Balinese Gamelan sound they first began exploring on 1981's DISCIPLINE, and drummer Pat Mastelloto throws in some electronic flavors that nod to drum-and-bass and garage beats. The dark, intense angularity that is a Crimson trademark is offset by a couple of ethereal, ambient electronic soundscapes, but there's plenty of hard-prog thrashing for those who were turned on to the band by their tour with heavy rockers Tool. And naturally, there's plenty of intricate musical invention for the longtime fans who expect nothing less. SKU: 1080436

Way We Were, The [Remastered]
Digitally remastered by Stephen Marcussen. There are no up-tempo songs to be found on this, Barbra's second number one album. The record consists entirely of ballads, and no one does a ballad like Barbra. Each song is masterfully performed, with the vocals taking the listener to a warm, soothing place. That's not to saythat all ballads have to be the yearnings of a co-dependent soul, as "Being At War With Each Other" expresses the anger one can feel in a relationship. "Something So Right" is a groove-laden tune that serves as an interlude to "The Best Thing You've Ever Done" which is a Broadway-like number full of violins, horns, and a note that's held for what seems like an eternity. The title track is a classic love song with a melancholy feel, and it garnered an Oscar and Grammy. This is followed by two extraordinary ballads: the wonderfully arranged "All In Love Is Fair," and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?," which was originally released in 1969 and is everything a ballad should be. Streisand's performance of "I've Never Been A Woman Before" is simply goosebump-producing. The album concludes with a medley: the jazzy "My Buddy" and "How About Me." SKU: 1071715

Summer Sun
Yo La Tengo: Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, James McNew. Additional personnel includes: Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen (flute, alto & tenor saxophones); Roy Campbell, Jr. (trumpet); William Parker (upright bass). Recorded at Alex The Great Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Building on the lush, complex sound established on I CAN HEAR THE HEART BEATING AS ONE and continued on 2000's AND THEN NOTHING TURNED ITSELF INSIDE-OUT, Hoboken's favorite trio wades in still deeper on 2003's SUMMER SUN. With vocalist/guitarist Ira Kaplan affecting a whispered croon and his drummer wife Georgia Hubley wielding brushes, this outing goes from the vibraphone jauntiness of "Moonrock Mambo" to the swirling, 10-minute "Let's Be Still" featuring contributions from downtown jazzbos William Parker and Roy Campbell Jr. Like a musical narcotic, songs like "How to Make a Baby Elephant Float" and "Tiny Birds" bob along ina current of humming keyboards and the underpinning of James McNew's understated bass playing. Breaking up this gentle excursion through the ether are "Georgia Vs. Yo La Tengo," a chugging number with watery-sounding effects and a repetitive piano run threaded throughout, and the samba-like "Winter A-Go-Go," which sounds like the Zombies slow-dancing with Buffalo Springfield. Succumbing to their penchant for beautifully executed offbeat covers, Yo La Tengo dips into the Big Star canon for an interpretation of "Take Care" that finds Hubley making like Hope Sandoval over a bed of dream-poppy acoustic guitar and pedal steel. Lifetime [Remastered]
The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of LIFE TIME includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal. Personnel: Tony Williams (drums, tympani, wood block, maracas, triangle); Sam Rivers (tenor saxophone); Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone, marimba); Herbie Hancock (piano); Gary Peacock, Richard Davis, Ron Carter (bass). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August 21 & 24, 1964. Includes liner notes by Lawrence Rutler and Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. Tony Williams' groundbreaking stint with Miles Davis' quintet of the '60s redefined the role of the drummer in a jazz ensemble. LIFE TIME, not to be confused with Williams' later fusion group of the same name, is his first release as a leader. Recorded when the drummer was only 18, it is a masterpiece of the "New Thing" movement of the period. The maturity and depth of creativity that Williams displays here, both in his drumming and composing, is startling and well beyond his age. The session contains many unusual pieces including the opening set of "Two Pieces Of One: Red" and "Green," two very experimental chamber works more akin to 20th century classical music than jazz. Williams and guests Sam Rivers, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Hancock and Gary Peacock only occasionally resemble a traditional jazz group, as on the furiously manic "Tomorrow Afternoon." The creative "Memory" is an intriguing piece that features Williams on orchestral percussion and stunning workby Hutcherson. Interestingly, the closing "Barb's Song To The Wizard," a duet between Hancock and Ron Carter, does not include Williams at all, yet his strong presence is clearly felt throughout. SKU: 1082022

Down II (A Bustle In Your Hedgerow)
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Down: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Pepper Keenan (electric guitar, timpani); Kirk Windstein (guitar); Rex Brown (Farfisa organ, keyboards, bass); Jim Bower (drums). Additional personnel includes: Wayne Lohr (Fender Rhodes piano); Opal Anselmo (background vocals). No rap-metal or nu-metal for the heavy dudes of Down. These guys learned their lessons from the Old Testament of heavy metal; Black Sabbath (there are enough doomy riffs here to fill several Ozzfests), Led Zeppelin (the album itself is named for a lyric from Zep's most requested song), and the like. Not that DOWN II finds these men of metal practicing musical necromancy; this is fully contemporary stuff at least as modern-sounding as anything being concurrently created by Metallica. it's just that the blues-rock influence on the guitar licks, and the willingness to immerse themselves in an epic like the intimidatingly titled "Landing on the Mountains of Meggido" (complete with tympani and acoustic guitar filigrees) puts them in line more with those who've influenced them than those who are likely to share a rock festival withthem. Art Of Losing, The [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. American Hi-Fi: Stacy Jones, Jaime Arentzen (vocals, guitar); Drew Parson (vocals, bass); Brian Nolan (vocals, drums). Recorded Sunset Sound Studio 2, Hollywood, California. Rightfrom the first note struck by singer/guitarist Stacy Jones's band American Hi-Fi, the ex-Veruca Salt/Letters to Cleo drummer is up front about his love of straight-forward rock & roll; the kind that doesn't fit under any kind of pop-punk, emo, or rap-rock umbrella. THE ART OF LOSING finds Jones successfully indulging his tastes thanks to a snappy mix of big guitars and inescapable hooks. If you're still unsure as to what makes his heart race a little faster, it all becomes clear when Jones implores a former paramour to give back his Pixies, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, and My Bloody Valentine records throughout "The Breakup Song." Although this sophomore effort leans towards a heavier sound, American Hi-Fi still manages to sneak in other recognizable influences. Among the most recognizable are the Burundi drumming intro of the title cut that falls somewhere between Adam Ant and Bow Wow Wow, and the soaring harmonies and guitar that should make "This Is the Sound" the envy of any self-respecting Brit-pop band. Fans of garage rock ("Built For Speed") and Sonic Youth ("Teenage Alien Nation") will also find THE ART OF LOSING to be a win-win situation. SKU: 1082062

Clash, The (US Version) [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with LONDON CALLING and COMBAT ROCK. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (bass); Tory Crimes, Nicky Headon (drums). Producers: Mickey Foote, Lee Perry, The Clash, Bill Price. Digitally remastered by Ray Staff &Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios, London, England). This album introduced the world to The Clash, the only group that was on even footing with The Sex Pistols in U.K. punk rock's early days. The Clash avoided the Pistols' sensationalism, singing instead songs about politics, racism and class warfare. The music's brutal assault, accompanied by Strummer's charismatic vocal style, earned the group attention in its native England, where THE CLASH entered the charts at number 12. This album collects many tracks from the original British release of THE CLASH along with the single "I Fought The Law", and "Complete Control", a song they recorded with legendary Jamaican producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. Beyond The Blue Horizon [Remastered]
Personnel: George Benson (guitar); Clarence Palmer (organ); Ron Carter (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Michael Cameron, Albert Nicholson (percussion). Recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 2-3, 1971. Includes liner notes by Steve Futterman. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Often vilified for masterminding Wes Montgomery's incredibly successful crossover pop albums, and George Benson's subsequent forays into similar territory, Creed Taylor is also responsible for this small-group date from 1971. Unlike, say, 1968's SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME, this isn't just about Benson facing off with an orchestrated studio ensemble. Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, organist Clarence Palmer, and percussionists Michael Cameron and Albert Nicholson really groove together, particularly on the Miles Davis "So What?" which starts with an R&Bfeel before being pushed and pulled in various directions, and the samba "Gentle Rain." The playing gets pretty adventurous, but the sounds are still pre-fusion, thanks to the choice of Hammond organ and upright bass over Fender Rhodes piano and fretless bass, and the fact that Benson always maintained a Wes Montgomery-inspired tone and attack, even at the height of his "Breezin'" success. The originals are more focused on the guitarist; "All Clear" has bright, poppy vamp that Benson romps all over, "Ode to a Kudu" features his supple chordal melody approach, while "Somewhere in the East" gives the percussionists room to stretch out. In Violet Light
The Tragically Hip: Gordon Downie, Paul Langlois, Robby Baker, Gord Sinclair, Johnny Fay. Additional personnel: Neil Symonette (percussion). Producers: Hugh Padgham, The Tragically Hip, Mark Vreeken. Principally recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. There's little doubt that the Tragically Hip are sick of being called "the Canadain R.E.M.," but it's just so much fun to say. Besides which, there's a grain of truth to the appelation. The band's ringing guitars, intelligent lyrics, andrich, driving sound would garner them a welcome among fans of Stipe and company, but the Hip do have gheir own identity. That identity has made them a big deal in their homeland for years (their first album was released in 1987). Their smaller but still fervent stateside following turned out in droves to pick up IN VIOLET LIGHT which offers everything from the hard-rocking, Stones/Replacements-like bravado of "Use it Up" to the quirky, evocative "It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken." Plugged - MTV In Concert
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitar); Bobby King, Gia Ciambotti, Carol Dennis, Cleopatra Kennedy, Angel Rogers (vocals); Crystal Taliefero (guitar, percussion, vocals); Shayne Fontayne (guitar); Roy Bittan (keyboards); Tommy Sims (bass); Zachary Alford (drums); Patty Scialfa. "Thunder Road" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for BestMale Rock Vocal Performance. Asked to perform on MTV UNPLUGGED, Bruce Springsteen, typically intractable, started out with an unreleased solo acoustic ditty, announced that the unplugged portion of the show was over and called out a full electric band to play the rest of the set. This isn't the E Street Band, but the session band he assembled to tour after releasing HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN in 1992. The set is heavy with songs from those albums--vaguely optimistic tunes about love, babies, and the light of day that waits just around the bend even through the darkest night. Diehard Springsteen fans will no doubt be put off by the lack of E Streeters, but as compensation they get the first appearance on an album of Springsteen performing "Light Of Day," which he wrote for Joan Jett, and that unreleased opening number, the surprisingly saucy "Red Headed Woman." There are also overhauled versions of the E Street classics "Darkness on The Edge Of Town" and "Thunder Road." SKU: 1083095

Mama Africa [Remastered]
Personnel: Peter Tosh (vocals, Clavinet); Donald Kinsey (guitar, background vocals); Steve Golding, Micky "Mao" Chin, Darryl Thompson (guitar); Dean Fraser (saxophone, horns); David Madden, Arnold Brackenridge, Junior "Chico" Chin (trumpet); Ronald "Nambo" Robinson (trombone); Keith Sterling (piano); Byron Allred (keyboards); Lebert "Gibby" Morrison, Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Carlton "Santa" Davis, Sly Dunbar (drums); Sticky Thompson, Scully Sims (percussion); Betty Wright, Dorrett Myers, Pam Hall, Audrey Hall, RaymondHall (background vocals). Recorded at Dynamic Sound Studios, Kingston, Jamaica in 1983. Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of EMI Records "Peter Tosh Remasters" series. Released nearly five years before his violent death at the hands of thieves in 1987, MAMA AFRICA was the last studio album of new material released in Peter Tosh's lifetime. From his days as one of the original Wailers in the '60s, Tosh was one of Jamaican music's most outspoken and controversial artists. Though his former partner Bob Marley never shied away from political or social statements himself, Tosh eschewed Marley's gift for metaphor and parable in favor of such explicitly political slogans as the legendary "Legalize It." MAMA AFRICA features the similarly plainspoken anti-nuclear "Peace Treaty," complete with falling-bombs sound effects. The single, a reggae remake of "Johnny B. Goode," was a radio success. While it might seem on the surface to be a crass commercial move to remake a rock classic, Tosh's sly, dread-filled delivery makes plain the racial and social subtext of Chuck Berry's lyrics. Movie Album, The (+DVD)
Personnel: Barbra Steisand (vocals); Dean Parks,Michael Thompson, John Pisano, Oscar Castro-Neves (guitar); Joel Derouin (violin); Gayle Levant (harp); William Galison (harmonica); Dan Higgins (flute); Tom Scott (saxophone); Chuck Findley (trumpet); Warren Luening (flugelhorn); Randy Waldman (piano, keyboards); Mike Melvoin, Tom Rainer (piano); Robbie Buchanan, Mark Portman, Mike Lang (keyboards); Neil Stubenhaus (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta, Gregg Field (drums); Paulinho Dacosta (percussion); Windy Wagner (background vocals). Producers: Barbra Streisand, Robbie Buchanan, Johnny Mandel. Recorded at Sony Pictures Studios, Inc, Culver City, California; Grandma's House, Malibu, California; The Hop, Studio City, California. Includes liner notes by Jay Landers, Richard Jay-Alexander. THE MOVIE ALBUM was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Thanks to a career that's found Barbra Streisand straddling the mediums of film and song, it comes as no surprise that the concept of THE MOVIE ALBUM is a tribute to the two worlds that have given her so much success. Going as far back as the George Raft 1935 classic EVERY NIGHT AT EIGHT, right up on through the 1988 cult classic BAGDAD CAFE, Babs' overall resurrection of film material is fastidiously handled and, in many cases, given delightfully unexpected arrangements. "I'm in the Mood for Love" becomes a gentle bossa-nova number, and "Moon River" benefits from a reading marked by an understated acoustic guitar. One of the nicer touches in this package is the inclusion of song-by-song annotations for each track, written by Streisand herself. Here you find out that her late Bichon Frise Sammy gave her inspiration during the recording of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," and "Wild Is the Wind" took her back to being a 15-year-old girl who loved Anna Magnani and had a crush on Tony Franciosa. THE MOVIE ALBUM is a lush keepsake sure to please pop-loving cinephiles and die-hard Babs fans alike. SKU: 1088551

In Washington DC Vol.1
Personnel: Lester Young (tenor saxophone); Bill Potts (piano); Norman Williams (bass); Jim Lucht (drums). Recorded at Olivia Davis' Patio Lounge, Washington, D.C. on December 7, 1956. Includes liner notes by Bill Potts. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This CD documents a date Lester Young (also known as "Pres") played with the house band (Bill Potts Trio) at Olivia Davis's Patio Lounge in the District of Columbia. It would have been just another gig had pianist Bill Pottsnot lured Young into letting him record the music by buying him a bottle of Hennessy cognac. Fortunately, Young took the bait, for decades later we have a wonderful example of the tenor legend's exquisite abilities in his later period. Many critics claim that Young's playing went steadily down hill after his tenure in the military (where he was the victim of fierce racism). However, Young displays a joie de vivre on this CD that is simply contagious. Made up of mostly standard tunes such as "I Can't Get Started," "Jeepers Creepers," "A Foggy Day," and others, Pres and company really shine. Perhaps the highlight of the set is the uptempo version of "Tea for Two" that showcases Young's cool tone and behind-the-beat phrasing even at a faster tempo. Drummer Jim Lucht also plays some very creative eight bar solo breaks on this song. SKU: 3107921

Out In California (Live)
Dave Alvin & The Guilty Men: Dave Alvin (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, national steel bodied guitar); Rick Shea (electric, pedal & steel guitars, mandolin, background vocals); Brantley Kearns (fiddle, background vocals); Chris Gaffney (accordion, background vocals); Joe Terry (keyboards, background vocals); Bobby Lloyd Hicks (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: John "Juke" Logan (harmonica); Greg Leisz (electric guitar, dobro). Recorded live at The Blue Cafe in Long Beach, California in August, 2001 and at The Neighborhood Church in Pasadena, California in January, 2002. Though fans of Dave Alvin's finely honed Americana songcraft may lament the fact that OUT IN CALIFORNIA is his second live album and third of non-new material since 1998's acclaimed BLACKJACK DAVID, anyone enamored enough of the former Blasters auteur's work should nevertheless find plenty to enjoy here. Playing close to home, Alvin is supported by six old pals who inject a variety of rootsy textures (accordion, pedal steel, fiddle, etc.) and a surfeit of energy into his character studies ofthe American working class. A medley of "Little Honey" (recorded by X while Alvin was briefly a member) and Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love" turns into a nine-minute jamfest that shows just how far these Guilty Men can take things. However, the succinct sonic novellas "Andersonville" and "Wanda and Duane" stand in testament to the fact that it's the songs themselves that are the key to Alvin's vision. A turbo-charged romp through the Blasters anthem "American Music" and a jokey acquiescenct to the ubiquitous "Freebird" request end things on a light-hearted note. SKU: 1074850

Big Fun [SACD]
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel includes: Miles Davis (trumpet); Sonny Fortune (soprano saxophone, flute); Steve Grossman, Wayne Shorter, Carlos Garnett (soprano saxophone); Bennie Maupin (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet); Lonnie Smith, Harold I. Williams (piano); Joe Zawinul (electric piano, Farfisa organ); Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea (electric piano); John McLaughlin (electric guitar); Bihari Sharma (electric sitar, tambura, tabla); Khalil Balakrishna (electric sitar, tambura); Dave Holland (acoustic & electric basses); Harvey Brooks (electric bass); Ron Carter, Michael Henderson (bass); Billy Cobham (drums, triangle); Billy Hart, Al Foster, Jack DeJohnette (drums); Badal Roy (tabla); Airto Moreira (cuica, berimbau, percussion). Recorded at Columbia Studio E, New York, New York between November 19, 1969 and June 12, 1972. Includes liner notes by Bennie Maupin. In the period following Miles Davis' crossover breakthrough, BITCHES BREW, the trumpeter recorded incessantly, trying out new combinations of ideas and musicians. These progressive young musicians went on to forge a new alloy of music from the ore of funk, electric soul, psychedelic blues and progressive rock, with trace elements of classical and jazz. And Miles was the lightning rod for it all. BIG FUN gathers up some of the trumpeter's choicest experiments in '70s cool, much of it with a profoundly Indian flavor, and Miles' attraction to raga phrasing mirrors his love of flamenco melodies, particularly on "Lonely Fire"(a late Miles ballad in the tradition of "Nefertiti," "Shhh/Peaceful" and "Sanctuary"). This moody arrangement is distinguished by floating tear drops of tamboura, sitar, tabla and Fender/Rhodes, as Miles sounds taps, shadowed by soprano sax and bass clarinet, before breaking into tempo over the crossrhythms of Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette. Miles employs twin keyboardists, twin bassists and twin drummers, throughout BIG FUN, and the visceral starts and stops of "Great Expectations" highlight the sort of layered, collective polyphony he was trying to develop, his focused melodies acting as a lyric beacon. "Ife" is Miles in his ON THE CORNER mode, marked by the arrival of funk bassist Michael Henderson, percussionist Mtume and long-time collaborator Al Foster (plus Billy Hart) on drums. But the real highlight is "Go Ahead John," where Davis and his favorite guitarist surf over the fulminating groove of Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland in fast funk and slow blues sections. Once Upon A Time [SACD]
Simple Minds: Mel Gaynor (vocals, drums); Jim Kerr (vocals); Charlie Burchill (guitar); Michael MacNeil (piano, keyboards); John Giblin (bass). Additional personnel includes: Robin Clark (vocals). Recorded at Right Track Studios, New York and BEarsville Studios,Bearsville, New York. Simple Minds gained belated US chart success with "(Don't You) Forget About Me" and a distinctly transatlantic burr covered this, the ensuing album. Producers Jimmy Iovine and Bob Clearmountain sculpted an unambiguous sound where crowd-pleasing anthems invoked a genuine excitement. Loud, forthright and shorn of subtlety, ONCE UPON A TIME shows the group's core trio - Jim Kerr (vocals), Charlie Burchill (guitar) and Mick McNeil (keyboards) - working together with genuine empathy, while a revamped rhythm section underpins the material with sinewy precision. They combine to create what many consider to be Simple Minds' most exciting and exhilarating release. SKU: 1088507

At The Royal Roost 1948/At Birdland 1950-1953
Full title: At The Royal Roost 1948-At Birdland 1950, 1951, 1953. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Kenny Hagood (vocals); Lee Konitz (alto saxophone); Brew Moore, Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Sahib Shibab (baritone saxophone); J.J. Johnson (trombone); John Lewis, Tadd Dameron, Kenny Drew, Wade Legge (piano); Curley Russell, Tommy Potter, Lou Hackney (bass); Max Roach, Art Blakey, Al Jones (drums); Candido (congas). Recorded live at The Royal Roost, New York, New York on September 25, 1948 and Birdland, New York, New York on May 18 & 20, 1950, February 17, 1951 and May 16, 1953. Includes liner notes by Mike Head. Digitally remastered by Peter Rynston (Charly Studios, London, England). Culled from four live dates that cover a significant period in Miles career, this disc features such musicians at Jay Jay Johnson, Sonny Rollins, Max Roach and Art Blakey. This collection features some excellent performances in what were perhapsbebop's most fruitful years, though the sound quality, unfortunately, is poor. Outstanding tunes like Bud Powell's "Tempus Fugit" and Miles own "Evance" are given highly energized treatments with strong playing all around. Far and away the best thing about these cuts is the sheer head-crushing power and lightning complexity of Art Blakey's drumming which, on tracks like "Wee" and "Evance," sounds like it's going to demolish the stage. These probably aren't the best available live Miles tracks, but they're excellent in many ways. SKU: 1083162

Teenage Depression
Eddie & The Hot Rods: Barrie Masters (vocals); Dave Higgs (guitar, piano, background vocals); Paul Gray (bass, background vocals); Steve Nicol (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Jackson's Studio, Rickmansworth, England and live at the Marquee, London, England in 1976. Includes liner notes by Alan Robinson. Though they were a crucial factor in the birth of British punk, by the timethe Sex Pistols and the Clash exploded onto the scene, Eddie & the Hot Rods were already fading into obscurity. Along with peers like Dr. Feelgood and the Kursaal Flyers, they helped create the British pub-rock sound of the mid-'70s, a sound exemplified by TEENAGE DEPRESSION. Like UK bands a decade earlier, Eddie & the Hot Rods updated American R&B, with a harder edge and no-nonsense approach that was at odds with the prog-rock then ruling the roost. Covers of Joe Tex ("Show Me") and Sam Cooke ("Shake") share space with similarly inclined original tunes written by Hot Rods guitarist Dave Higgs (moniker to the contrary, there's actually no "Eddie" in the group). Despite the integrity of the band's chugging, unpretentious sound, the more savage sound of punk rock instantly made them seem outdated, condemning Eddie & the Hot Rods to the realm of historical footnotes. Thankfully, TEENAGE DEPRESSION remains to remind us of this important chapter in rock & roll history. SKU: 6541915

Burnin' Sky
Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, piano, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums). Recorded at Le Chateau Studios, Herouville, France in July & August, 1976. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Bad Company had seriously began to wane from critical favor with the release of BURNIN' SKY. Congratulated for the no-frills approach on their debut, Bad Company was subsequently taken to task for sticking with the dynamic that made them a great band in the first place! While nearly every other supergroup in rock history (excepting the Traveling Wilburys) succumbed quickly to the inviting airs of self-importance, Bad Company consistently fueled itself on boiling its blues-based rock down to its barest elements. The title track alone is a potent reminder of the band's stripped down power and Rodgers' considerable vocal prowess. Even at his most passionate, Rodgers never gives in to histrionics or superfluousemoting. With a simple kick drum and snare pushing him, Rodgers rides over the insinuating two-chord riff in full rock & roll glory. SKU: 1070672
