Asshole [PA]
Personnel include: Gene Simmons (vocals, guitar, bass guitar); Nina Singh (vocals, drums, percussion, loops); Frank Zappa (spoken vocals, guitar); Mark Addison (guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, drums, background vocals); Frank Tolstrup (guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion); Dweezil Zappa (guitar, background vocals); Dave Navarro, Ritchie Kotzen, Bruce Kulick (guitar); Eric Singer (drums); Ahmet Zappa, Moon Zappa, Gail Zappa, Sophie Tweed Simmons, Nick Tweed Simmons, Shannon Tweed (background vocals). Recording information: 2004. Whether you love or hate Kiss bassist/marketing mastermind Gene Simmons, the main revelation of his second solo album is how eclectic he can be with his musical choices. (This is, after all, a guy who covered "When You Wish Upon a Star" on his solo debut at a time when he was still sporting demon make-up.) Apparently, the cocky bassist's Rolodexgot quite a workout for this project. Former Kiss bandmates Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer were recruited for the swaggering "Weapons of Mass Destruction," Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro shows up on a scorching cover of Prodigy's "Firestarter," and Bob Dylan, of all people, helped co-write the heartfelt ballad "Waiting for the Morning Light." Throughout the record Simmons shifts gears, from the ZZ Top-flavored boogie of "Sweet & Dirty Love" to the Beatlesque ballad "Now That You're Gone," to the surprisingly catchy title cut. This notorious cad even gives another glimpse of his sentimental side on the lush, Patsy Cline-inspired closer "1,000 Dreams," complete with strings and crying pedal steel. SKU: 6554198

Big Men Cry
Banco De Gaia includes: Toby Marks (various instruments). Additional personnel: Matt Jenkins (soprano saxophone); Dick Parry (alto, tenor & baritone saxophones); Aidan O'Brien (Uillean pipes). More wide-world electron big beat from Toby Marks, who knows a good groove when he creates one. This 1997 entry in the Banco canon is content to forget anything that came to pass within electronica in the defining period of the mid-'90s. Marks simply fires up the drum machines, engages his samples, and lets the bullets fly. Variety lingers here, however, in welcome fashion. "Celestine" backs the BPM down in favor of a slow motion, progish/fusion saunter replete with philistine horns and synths limned from the stone edifices of cathedrals. On "One Billion Miles Out," Marks deposits the world-weary traveler in a Banco de Galactica and blasts him out into the asteroid belt, where spooky, star-shine electronics percolate then hiss-the voices of angels arising to greet their visitor. Then it's back to "Starstation Earth" to relax to space-age bachelor-pad music made with bromide synths left over from Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, as you lay awashin twinkling ambience. And you can take that to the Banco. SKU: 1079858

Guitar Soli
Producers: Ed Denson, Robbie Basho. Compilation producer: Bill Belmont. Recorded on February 9, 1966. The Takoma record label came to prominence in the late '60s, bringing idiosyncratic folk artists to the attention of young rock fans and earninga reputation for high-quality homespun acoustic music. While John Fahey, Takoma's founder, and Leo Kottke earned well-deserved followings and critical plaudits, Robbie Basho, an influence on both of these players, remained a virtual unknown despite making some masterful recordings in his distinctive acoustic style. The 1996 release of GUITAR SOLI, a collection of Basho's best work from his long-out-of-print records, is a well-chosen, extremely long-awaited introduction to this under-appreciated artist. Basho's gritty fingerpicked style of steel-stringed guitar playing contains marked Eastern influences, as well as Cajun and Celtic elements. The result is a style that is utterly individual. From the ghostly whistling on "Oriental Love" to the burnished beauty of "Sansara in Sweetness After Sandstorm (The Seal of the Blue Lotus)," Basho's compositions are imbued with a rough-hewn, gemlike perfection. This will be a welcome addition to the collection of anyone who appreciates the sound of six steel strings. SKU: 1002197

Dedication/On The Line [Remastered]
2LP's on 2 CD's: DEDICATON(1982)/ON THE LINE(1982). 2 LPs on 1 CD: DEDICATION/ON THE LINE. Personnel include: Gary U.S. Bonds(vocals); Clarence Clemons (vocals, saxophone); J.T. Brown (vocals); Miami Steve (guitar, bongos); Bruce Springsteen (guitar); Danny Federici (accordion); Chuck Jackson , Ben E. King (background vocals). Liner Note Author: John Tobler. New Orleans R&B singer Gary U.S. Bonds had a major hit in the early 1960s with "Quarter to Three," but quickly faded into obscurity. One man who never forgot Bonds was Bruce Springsteen, who made "Quarter to Three" a staple of his live set and oversaw the release of Bonds's 1981 comeback album, DEDICATION. Springsteen produced, supplied his E Street Band, and wrote a batch of songs for the album, which captured the spirit of Bonds's early material filtered through a more contemporary sensibility, courtesy of the Boss. The album, whose Bruce-penned hit "This Little Girl" put Bonds back on the pop charts, is paired here with the follow-up record ON THE LINE. The latter repeated its predecessor's successful Springsteen-assisted formula, with Bruce contributing an even bigger percentage of the material. While it wasn't as big a success as DEDICATION, it still proved that this was no one-shot phenomenon. In retrospect its hard to believe that in the wake of two albums as strong as these it took Bonds another 22 years to return to the studio, though he seemingly never tired of playing the Comeback King role to the hilt. All Good Things (Jerry Garcia Studio Sessions)
ALL GOOD THINGS contains: GARCIA (1972)/GARCIA (COMPLIMENTS) (1974)/REFLECTIONS (1976)/CATS UNDER THE STARS (1978)/RUN FOR THE ROSES (1982)/OUTTAKES, JAMS & ALTERNATES (2004). Includes remastered versions of Jerry Garcia's five solo studio albums with bonus tracks, a bonus disc of previously unreleased tracks, and a 130 page booklet. Personnel includes: Jerry Garcia (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, piano, organ, bass); Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals); John Kahn (guitar, organ, keyboards, bass); Larry Carlton, Bob Weir (guitar); David Grisman (mandolin); Brian Godchaux, Candy Godchaux (violin); Steve Schuster (flute, clarinet, saxophone); Joel Tepp (clarinet); Jackie Kelso (tenor & baritone saxophones); Melvin Moore (trumpet); Keith Godchaux (keyboards, background vocals); Michael Omartin (piano, tack piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Nicky Hopkins (piano); Melvin Seals, Merl Saunders (organ); Mickey Hart, Ron Tutt (drums, percussion); Johnny D'Fonseca, Bill Kreutzmann (drums); Bobbye Hall (congas, shakers, bells); Maria Muldaur (background vocals). Producers include: Bob & Betty, Ram Rod, Bill Kreutzmann, Jerry Garcia, John Kahn. Compilation producers: James Austin, David Gans, Blair Jackson. Recorded between 1972 & 1982. Includes liner notes by Robert Hunter and Blair Jackson. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Though the Grateful Dead were notorious for sounding better onstage than in the studio, Dead leader Jerry Garcia's solo work fared better on record, perhaps due to its less open-ended nature. The six-disc ALL GOOD THINGS set brings allof Garcia's studio recordings under one roof--along with a handsomely appointed booklet and a disc of outtakes--and convincingly makes the case for Garcia as the most aesthetically successful Dead solo artist. The first album, GARCIA, essentially a one-man-band record, contains some of Garcia and Robert Hunter's best songs, which would become Dead standards ("Sugaree," "Loser," etc.). The follow-up, COMPLIMENTS, is full of covers and expectedly tasty guitar work. Recorded in 1976, REFLECTIONS is a Dead album in all but name, though considerably more concise than the band's contemporaneous offerings. CATS UNDER THE STARS and RUN FOR THE ROSES are the most polished, but also contributed to the Dead's repertoire ("Gomorrah," "Valerie"). As this collection proves, Garcia's amiable singing and astonishing guitar playing, even over the course of six CDs, never becomes too much of a good thing. SKU: 6556955

Grand Dont Come For Free, A
'A Grand Don't Come For Free' is the quasi-concept album follow up to 2002's hugely successful 'Original PirateMaterial'. Personnel: Dominic Miller (classical guitar); Placido Domingo, Alejandro Lerner, Sting (vocals); Rufus Miller (guitar); Chris Botti (trumpet); Jason Rebello (piano); Richard Cottle (keyboards, programming); Pino Palladino (bass); Nick Patrick, Mile Bould (percussion); The Budapest Film Orchestra, The London Session Orchestra. Recorded in 2003. Includes liner notes by Dominic Miller. SHAPES is a collection of classical compositions by Bach, Satie, and Schubert, among others, that have been retooled for the Latin-influenced acoustic guitar of Dominic Miller. A seasoned session player, Miller has performed with a diverse roster of artists, most notably Sting, with whom he has recorded eleven albums including the critically acclaimed THE SOUL CAGES. In the liner notes, Miller credits Sting's gift of a book of Bach partitas and sonatas as the catalyst for this ambitious project. "Mass in B Minor (Qui Tollis)," a Bach choral work, is one of the album's unexpected gems. Miller reverses the Mass's melodic structure and replaces the vocal lines with a lush string arrangement, while he explores the counter-melody on guitar. This novel approach is what makes SHAPES such a pleasure. Miller's ability to profoundly reinvent these beloved compositions and yet deliver them with all their original passion and reverence is remarkable. "Ave Maria" is the one song Miller decides not to touch. He performs it exactly as written, but invites his friends Placido Domingo and Sting to perform it as a duet. The result is a classic performance that only adds depth to SHAPES'high luster. SKU: 6553513

Beginning Of All Things To End, The [PA]
THE BEGINNING OF ALL THINGS TO END is an unaltered version of an early demo EP. Includes liner notes by Mudvayne. Reissuing rare tracks and early demos is a risky affair, especially in an era where studio proficiency and high production value have come to be expected. In the case of THE BEGINNING OF ALL THINGS TO END, the self-proclaimed "oxygen wasting losers" better known as Mudvayne felt compelled to make the contents of their KILL, I OUGHTTA demo available to loyal fans fallen victim to the scams of opportunist bootleggers. The edgy, raw ferocity of tracks such as "Cultivate" and "Some Assembly Required" are evidence of a developing metal band honing their craft, in the hopes of being discovered. Two remixes of L.D. 50 album track "Dig" are also included, as well as the blistering live tracks, "Central Disposal" and "Coal." "L.D. 50" is a disturbing industrialmetal noisescape (compiled from the interludes on the band's full-length debut), with flown-in spoken passages that perpetuate a recurring theme of medical references and a repeating whispered chant that dares the listener with the phrase, "open your mind." Garcia (Remastered & Expanded)
This 2005 CD reissue presents eight bonus tracks, including numerous alternate takes. Personnel: Jerry Garcia (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, piano, organ, bass guitar); Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Producers: Bob Matthews; Betty Cantor; Bill Kreutzmann. Recording information: Wally Heider Studio, San Francisco, California (07/1971). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Jerry Garcia's first solo venture is partially a testament to the creative surge that the Garcia/Robert Hunter songwriting team experienced at the dawn of the 1970s. Along with such seminal Grateful Dead albums as WORKINGMAN'S DEAD, AMERICAN BEAUTY, and EUROPE '72, it is one in a series of explorations of American musical traditions draped in the colors forecast by JOHN WESLEY HARDING-era Bob Dylan. But this record also included modernist, outer-space moments for all of those concerned that Garcia had turned his back on his music's innovational trips. Having veered away from the mystical compositions they helped create for the late-'60s Dead, Garcia and Hunter began focusing on the timeless aspects of Americana, building on existing foundations. This meant electrifying old country and folk texturesuntil they crackled with the possibility of epiphany. "Deal," a blistering, steel-guitar-propelled tale that preaches the wisdom of caution, centers around a refrain popularized by Bill Monroe, and the strutting, mid-tempo "Sugaree" is loosely based on an Elizabeth Cotten song ("Shake Sugaree"). By comparison, GARCIA's weird sides are odd transmissions into free musical space. "Late for Supper," "Spidergawd," and "Eep Hour" are concoctions full of loops, sound effects, and Garcia's fragmented piano playing, hinting at the spacey electronic music the Dead would soon tackle. Greendale (+DVD)
Includes a bonus DVD featuring "Live At Vicar Street," a solo acoustic concert of Greendale. Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica, organ); Billy Talbot (vocals, bass); Ralph Molina (vocals, drums). The Mountainettes: Pegi Young, Nancy Hall, Twink Brewer, Sue Hall. Includes liner notes by Neil Young. Critics were sharply divided over this album, some hailing it as a masterpiece and some dismissing it as a tossed-off trifle. Longtime Young fans will notice right away that GREENDALE's raw, minimalistic sound and quirky songs hearken back to such gloriously off-kilter 1970s releases as ZUMA and TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. This is a "concept album," but it's one of the few instances in rock history where those words needn't send audiences fleeing in the opposite direction. Young's rare combination of deceptively effortless, organic narrative and unpredictable strangeness keep things flowing, and there are valuable moments of humor sprinkled throughout to keep GREENDALE from getting weighed down. Crazy Horse guitarist Poncho Sampedro is absent, leaving Young backed only by the primal thump of Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina, but a number of the tunes stretch out to 10 minutes or more, forcing you to confront the transcendentally ragged simplicity and eloquence of Young's guitar and musical vision. Ultimately, the effect is not unlike that of latter-day Bob Dylan or Lou Reed--a veteran rock poet fully immersed in his idiom pushes its boundaries to meet hisidiosyncratic needs, simultaneously confounding expectations and leaving deep footprints in the landscape of modern musical art. Best Of The Art Of Noise, The
THE BEST OF THE ART OF NOISE is a slightly misleading title. This ten-track compilation from 1989 containsnone of Anne Dudley and J.J. Jeczalik's innovative and groundbreaking collaborations with producer/theorist Trevor Horn from 1982 to 1985 (except in the form of themes and motifs which endlessly recur throughout this album and the rest of the Art of Noise's many releases). Also, this compilation contains no re-releases of familiar material, but entirely--and in some cases startlingly--new remixes of the older works. The compilation focuses on the band's singles, including a drastically altered version of their hit "Legs" called "Legacy," as well as novelties like collaborations with Duane Eddy ("Peter Gunn"), Max Headroom ("Paranoimia"), Dan Ackroyd ("Dragnet '88") and Tom Jones (Prince's "Kiss"). Other tracks include the lovely, orchestral "Opus" and the more sinister "Something Always Happens." SKU: 1070655

Jazz
Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano); Brian May (guitar, background vocals); John Deacon (bass); Roger Taylor (drums, background vocals). Recorded in Montreux, Switzerland and Nice, France between July and October, 1978. In 1978, all eyes were on Queen as they released the follow-up to their monster global hit NEWS OF THE WORLD. Predictably, JAZZ didn't achieve the massive commercial success of it's predecessor, but in aesthetic terms, it's a solid statement, and a marked progression of the band's musical vision. Though the band was already well into their "eclectic" mode by this time, the stylistic ventures the band takes on this album bring them evenfurther afield from the heavy rock they're best known for. Freddie Mercury kicks things off with "Mustapha," a nod to his Middle Eastern origins. Queen exhibits a ribald sense of humour on "Fat Bottomed Girls." Mercury indulges his Broadway tendencies to the hilt on "IF You Can't Beat Them" and "Don't Stop Me Now," which sound like they could have come from some obscure '50s musical. The jazzy "Dreamer's Ball" and the mellow, romantic "In Only Seven Days" provide welcome contrast. Amid all this eclecticism, though, the standout tracks are the propulsive rockers "Let Me Entertain You" (whose promise they fulfill) and "Dead on Time." SKU: 4123757

Ballad Of Easy Rider [Remastered]
The 1997 reissue of THE BALLAD OF EASY RIDER includes seven tracks that did not appear on the original LP; "Way Behind The Sun," "Mae Jean Goes To Hollywood," "Fiddler A Dram," "Build It Up," "The Ballad Of Easy Rider" and alternate versions of "Oil In My Lamp" and "Tulsa County." The Byrds: Gene Parsons (vocals, guitar, 5-string banjo, drums); Roger McGuinn (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Clarence White (vocals, guitar); John York (vocals, bass). Producer: Terry Melcher. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded between June 17, 1969 and August 26, 1969. Includes liner notes by David Fricke and Johnny Rogan. By 1969, the Byrds had already been through the Gram Parsons-fired country rock innovations of SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO, and had just lost Chris Hillman, the last original member except for Roger McGuinn. McGuinn was involved in so many extracurricular activities that he found little time to compose new material for EASY RIDER. His sole writing credit is the stellar title tune, co-written with Dylan for the famous biker film that gives this album its name (dislikingthe film, Dylan removed his name from the song). Fortuitously, McGuinn's taste in cover material and the compositional abilities of his bandmates more than made up for his lack of new material. McGuinn continued his experiments with combining old and new on an imaginative version of the traditional "Jack Tarr The Sailor," laced with synthesizer at a time when that instrument was barely being utilized in rock. Gene Parsons kicks in with one of the finest tunes of his career, "Gunga Din," a self-referential country-rocker that recalls the band's recent musical past. The balance of the album is a mixture of gentle folk-rock (Dylan and Woody Guthrie covers) and unabashed weirdness (the interstellar experimentalism of "Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins." All of it is eminently listenable. SKU: 1000261

Producers: Gladys Knight, Randy Jackson, Tiger, Gary Brown, James "D.C. Wilson, III. Engineers: Tiger, Adam Kagan, Jamey Jaz. AT LAST won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album. For her first mainstream pop/R&B album since 1994's JUST FOR YOU, soul legend Gladys Knight teamedup with a host of young contemporary producers including Randy Jackson and Shep Crawford. The result is a record that successfully places her alongside younger acts like Kelly Price and Deborah Cox. Plunging headfirst into the many facets of love, Knight comes up with a collection of slower songs that combine her soulful singing style with mature subject matter. Topics vary, from the pleading piano-driven "Please Help Me I'm Falling (In Love With You)," about breaking off an illicit relationship, to the search for a worthy mate (the Brian McKnight-flavored Jamie Foxx duet "I Wanna Be Loved"). Knight's vocals get to marinate in the midtempo grooves, with rich material like a hushed, gospel-flavored reading of Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands," and the harmony-laden slow jam that is Babyface's "Love Hurts." Most impressive is the former child prodigy's reworking of country star Phil Vassar's "Rose Bouquet," which gets transformed into a future Quiet Storm classic, complete with call-and-response vocals, chimes, and a rock-solid groove. AT LAST is a powerful creative statement from one of music's all-time greats. SKU: 1081877

Head Over Heels [Remastered]
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Simon Raymonde (bass). The Cocteau Twins released their second album, 1983's HEAD OVER HEELS, following their first bass player's departure, and came close to reinventing themselves. Songs like "Sugar Hiccup" and the brilliantly named "Glass Candle Grenades," with their swooping vocals, clattering percussion, and vibrant guitars, go a long way to lightening the downbeat mood cast on the band's previous album. (Collectors should note that early versions of the CD included all four tracks from the band's 1984 EP, SUNBURST AND SNOWBLIND.) Standouts include "The Tinderbox (of a Heart)," which is fleshed out with synthesized orchestral strings and multilayered vocal tracks; the strange, barreling, music-hall quality of "Multifoiled"; and the crunching, heavily echoed "Musette and Drums," which features Elizabeth Fraser's vocals at both their most commanding and most elusive. Arguably the best track is the spectacular "In the Gold Dust Rush," which highlights Robin Guthrie's multiple guitar effects to create an enveloping cocoon, broken only by shards ofdistortion. The underlying combination of basic song structures, ethereal vocals, and effects make HEAD OVER HEELS probably the best place to start investigating the Cocteau Twins' unique sound. SKU: 1079774

Tarantula
Personnel includes: Mystikal, Butch Cassidy, Juvenile, Redman, Method Man, KLC, Byou2ful, Shonnie, Beezy Boy, Dart (rap vocals); Rich Tapper (guitar); Pharrell Williams (horns, background vocals); Chad Hugo (horns); Mitch DeStefano (bass); Chad Hugo (horns); DJ Scratch (turntables); Big V-90, $tevie Green, DJ Ron, Evelyn Mojica, Lara Vaidya (background vocals). Producers include: Juvenile, The Neptunes, Rockwilder, Scott Storch, DJ Ron. Engineers include: Andrew Coleman, Pat "The Natural" Viala, KLC. TARANTULA was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. "Bouncin' (Bumpin'Me Against The Wall)" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Male Rap Solo Performance. Southern rapper Mystikal came so far so fast from his initial thug-life/No Limit Records image that anyone keeping even a casual eye on his progress over the years should find the stylistic and thematic breadth of TARANTULA to be no great surprise. Opening track "Bouncin' Back," which features uberproducers the Neptunes, doesn't sample James Brown like zillions of other rappers might; it inhabits the James Brown spirit, offering a very clear picture of what would happen if the Godfather of Soul ever went the hip-hop route. The accessible, highly melodic backing on "Settle the Score" contrasts perfectly with the verbal jousting of Mystikal and Juvenile. When Mystikal's not getting down over cracking, old-school funk tracks, he's interacting with spare, angular synth riffs in a thoroughly modern manner. Whatever the mode, it's the man and his message that matter most on TARANTULA. SKU: 1070202

Strawberries Mean Love
STRAWBERRIES MEAN LOVE, unless you're allergic, in which case they mean hives. That pretty much sums up the two likely responses to the Strawberry Alarm Clock, Santa Barbara's first and best exponent of flower power-era psychedelic pop. Either you'll find their catchy pop tunes, laced with pseudo-profound lyrics and cool trippy production effects, to be potent reminders of a certain place and time, or you'll find it all extremely calculated and commercial. Actually, the Strawberry Alarm Clock were both at once, and as a result, songs like "Incense and Peppermints" and "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" are both somehow more honest evocations of the real spirit of '67 as most people actually experienced it and, frankly, much better pop songs than, say, "Somebody To Love." This anthology, a remastered and expanded version of a previous collection on the excellent UK reissue label Ace/Big Beat, is the best SAC experience. SKU: 4123488
