John Henry
They Might Be Giants: John Flansburgh (vocals, guitar); John Linnell (vocals, horns, keyboards). Additional personnel: Jay Sherman Godfrey, Robert Quine (guitar); Steven Bernstein, Frank London (trumpet); Kevin Osborne (trombone); Kurt Hoffman (horns); Tony Maimone, Graham Maby (bass); Brian Doherty (drums). Hudson Shad: Wilbur Pauley, Peter Becker, Hugo Munday, Mark Bleeke, William Douglas Vannice (vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Sound Studios, Bearsville, New York and Skyline Studios, New York, New York. For their fifth full album of new material, the duo of John Linnel and John Flansburgh (who are They Might Be Giants) expand their lineup into a full-fledged band. They'd been touring as such for a year or two prior to the making of this album and the first peek came with a couple of tracks on the previous year's WHY DOES THE SUN SHINE? EP. The songs still have their trademark absurdist wordplay. But where two minutes used to suffice, they nowcomfortably stretch out some numbers to twice that length. The crack rhythm section of drummer Brian Doherty and bassist Tony Maimone can anchor, groove and swing. Horns punch out of the arrangements, adding a luster of celebration to the proceedings. With the opening measures of "No One Knows My Plan," one would be hard-pressed to name the ensemble. But once the singing enters and the song's narrative takes shape, it could be none other than these masters of cerebral fun. Their obvious delight throughout is truly infectious. SKU: 5054444

Decoy
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet, synthesizer); Bill Evans, Branford Marsalis (soprano saxophone); Robert Irving III (synthesizer, programming); John Scofield (guitar); Darryl "The Munch" Jones (bass); Al Foster (drums); Mino Cinelu (percussion). Engineers: Ronald F. Lorman, Guy Charbonneau. Recorded at A & R Studios and the Record Plant, New York, New York; live at Festival International De Jazz De Montreal,Montreal, Canada. DECOY is a vivid example of Miles Davis' unerring ear for identifying, casting and nurturing talent. Among those helping out Miles flesh out this modern vision of electric jazz: John Scofield, who ranks among the most progressive of jazz guitarists and composers; reedman Branford Marsalis, who fronted the Tonight Show Band; Darryl Jones, who held down the bass chair for Sting and subbed for Bill Wyman in the Rolling Stones; and drummer Al Foster, who went on to work with Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and Ron Carter. DECOY marks a milestone in Miles' thinking since returning to the jazz wars, and the trumpeter's keyboard abstractions over Jones' Kraftwerk-like bass groove on "Freaky Deaky" offers clues as to the style of spontaneous orchestration and interplay he wanted. Co-producer/keyboardist Robert Irving's title track depicts an opulent canvas of inter-connected modes, all doing a wheeling dance around Jones' spacious, behind-the-beat bass pulse; "Robot 415" is an Afro-Techno miniature; and "Code M.D." offers slick big band synth flourishes and contrasting rhythmic accents over a swampy, post-modern brand of southern funk. Throughout DECOY, Scofield's deft harmonic intuition and sure feel for boppish blues lines help set the plate for the trumpeter's stabbing upper register declamations and oblique melodies. And as a co-composer, Scofield helps distill Miles' `80s brew of ethnic shadings, funky polyrhythms, Gil Evans-styled keyboard colors...and the blues. Check out how his agitated counterpoint and skanky funk groove on "What It Is" inspire Miles to overdub a melange of trumpet commentaries, while "That's Right" showcases the band's elegant blues plumage. And the rousing "That's What Happened" suggests James Brown let loose in a particle collider, as a fragmented melody snakes its way through the carnage. SKU: 5068287

Motown Lost And Found (Love Starved Heart) [PA]
LOVE STARVED HEART was originally part of the MARVIN GAYE CLASSICS COLLECTION box set. The 1999 reissue includes 10 additional tracks. Personnel includes: Marvin Gave (vocals); The Vandellas (background vocals). Producers include: Ivy Jo Hunter, Johnny Bristol, George Gordy,William "Mickey" Stephenson, Ashford & Simpson. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Recorded between 1963 and 1969. Includes liner notes by David Ritz and Harry Weinger. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Studios East, New York, New York). This is part of Motown's Lost & Found Series. This is an expanded version (nine new cuts) of a 1994 album of previously unreleased songs by the Motown superstar, and it sounds for all the world like a Gaye's greatest-hits album piped in from some alternate universe. The songs, stylistically very much of a piece with Gaye's actual hits, are at once tantalizingly familiar and exotic, and it's safe to say that many (if not most of them) would have been successful had they been released at the time. High points include the almost Basie-esque big-band blues "Say When"; "Court of the Common Plea," a divorce song with a "Heard It Through the Grapevine"-esque backing track; "Gotta Say It," which has the same gospel feel as "Can I Get a Witness"; and the soaring "Darling You're Wonderful," where Gaye does a flawless imitation of Sam Cooke at the fade. Ten Summoner's Tales [ECD] [Remastered]
Personnel: Sting (vocals, harmonica, saxophone, bass); David Foxxe (spoken vocals); Dominic Miller (guitar); Paul Franklin (pedal steel guitar); Simon Fisher, Kathryn Greeley (violin); James Boyd (viola); Sian Bell (cello); Dave Heath (flute); Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian pipes, fiddle); Larry Adler, Brendan Power (chromatic harmonica); John Barclay, Guy Barker (trumpet); Richard Edwards, Mark Nightingale (trombone); David Sancious (keyboards); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). Recorded at Lake House, Wiltshire, England. "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male; and TEN SUMMONER'S TALES won the 1994 Grammy Award for Engineered Album, Nonclassical. "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" was also nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year;and TEN SUMMONER'S TALES was nominated for Album Of The Year. Mr. "Sheer Profundity" delivered a stunning fourth solo album that probably surprised himself as well as the critics who were prepared to watch his fall from grace after the seeming failure of the intense THE SOUL CAGES. Right from the opener, "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," the album holds its pace. That track will be seen as a classic in years to come, as will the beautiful "Fields Of Gold" and "Shape Of My Heart." Sting is established as a major artist with a solo career that has now eclipsed his former supergroup. SKU: 1001467

Essential Steve Earle, The
Producers: Richard Bennett, Emory Gordy, Jr., Steve Earle, Tony Brown. Includes liner notes by Karen Schoemer. During the early period of Earle's career, as chronicled here, he took the staid '80s Nashville music world by storm, kicking up an iconoclastic, rock-influenced storm the likes of which hadn't been seen since Waylon Jennings' early outlaw period 15 years prior. Like Waylon, Earle toted a larger-than-life sound, badass attitude, and gritty country-rock sound with him into the studio. Fortunately, he also possessed a craftsman's gift for songwriting. This disc concentrates mostly on Earle's groundbreaking debut, GUITAR TOWN, and rightly so. That album's title tune, as well as the snarling "Devil's Right Hand" and "Good Ol' Boy (Gettin' Tough)" combine a knack for sharply turned wordplay with a real insight into the depths of the American underbelly. One of Earle's primary influences was Townes Van Zandt, a fact made plain by the narrative skills Earle displays on "Copperhead Road." To prove thatEarle can sing a truck-driving song with the best of them, a rocking version of Dave Dudley's classic "Six Days on the Road," originally used for a movie soundtrack, is also included. ESSENTIAL STEVE EARLE makes a fine starter kit, but once you try it, you'll want to continue on to further appreciate the riches in Earle's oeuvre. SKU: 1002163

Jump Up [Remastered]
Cassette available on MCA Special Products (10499). NOTES: Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano); Pete Townshend, Richie Zito (guitar); James Newton-Howard (synthesizer, electric piano); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Jeffrey Porcaro (drums); Steve Holly (tambourine, synthesizer drums); Gary Osborne (background vocals). Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat. Elton John was in something of a transitional period in the early 1980s. After he stopped touring in 1977, he continued to appear on the charts, but he no longer dominated them. In 1982, when JUMP UP was released, he was tinkering with his sound, as some of the more synthesizer-driven songs here demonstrate. But, more importantly, his extraordinary partnership with Bernie Taupin had broken up and reformed, leaving Taupin as one of four lyricists on JUMP UP; it was the Taupin collaboration on "Empty Garden," a tribute to John Lennon, that proved to be the record's big hit. His abilities as a balladeer are much on display in the gorgeous, torch-style "Blue Eyes," which enjoyed chart success andwhich Roy Orbison would have done well to cover. The other obvious standout, "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)," with its soaring melody and emotional vocal, is a great showcase for Sir Elton's gift with a pop hook. Some songs, like the hard-stomping "Dear John" and "I Am Your Robot," reflect the synth-pop 80s sound, while "Ball and Chain," with its catchy hand claps and sprightly guitar work from guest Pete Townshend, is a little gem. Here Come The Tears
'Here Come The Tears' is the debut album by The Tears, and marks a reunion between Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler, both former members of indie legends Suede. Inkeeping with their previous work, the album veers between the epic Motown-influenced rock of McAlmont & Butler and the Bowie-esque androgyny of early Suede, making for an interesting listen. Includes the single 'Refugees'. SKU: 6587835

Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too
New Radicals: Gregg Alexander (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, synthesizer, bass, drums); Paolo Degregorio (guitar, synthesizer); Allessandro Allessandroni (strings); Greg Phillinganes, Richard Knowles, Paul Gordon, Mitch Kaplan (piano); John Pierce, Lance Morrison, Dan Rothchild (bass); John Freese, Gary Fergusson, Josh Freese, Stuart Johnson, Tal Bergman, Matt Laug (drums); Juliet Prater, Richie Podler, Lenny Castro (percussion). Additional personnel: Rusty Anderson (guitar); Danielle Brisebois (piano, background vocals); Paul Bushnell (bass). Engineers include: Bob Wartinbee, Bill Cooper, Andre Berryman. On their debut MAYBE YOU'VE BEEN BRAINWASHED TOO, New Radicals meld sweeping hooks with aggressive harmonies and large dollops of stream-of-consciousness soul. Wunderkid Gregg Alexander is essentially New Radicals, with a voice that bounces between Karl Wallinger's husky rasp andBilly Corgan's nasal whine. His songs go by such odd monikers as "Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You" and "Crying Like a Church On Monday." Having grown up with parents who switched religions like most people changed channels, it's no accident that Alexander avoids using heavy-handed didactic aphorisms to get his point across. Instead, his songwriting ranges from a tilt towards life's great mysteries (Amelia Earhardt's disappearance and the existence of Atlantis on "Someday We'll Know") to extolling the virtues of individualism in the face of media overload (the title track). Throughout, New Radicals play with an exuberance reminiscent of Style Council's breezier moments ("Mother We Just Can't Get Enough") and the blue-eyed soulful side of Todd Rundgren ("In Need Of A Miracle.") Actress-cum-musician Danielle Brisebois contributes background vocals and piano and stands out particularly on the melancholy "I Don't Wanna Die Anymore." SKU: 5047860

As far back as 1978, Elvis was paying homage to Bacharach, with a live version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" on the STIFFS LIVE album. When the two collaborated on "God Give Me Strength" (included here) for the film Grace of My Heart, they hit it off so well that they decided to write an entire album together, PAINTED FROM MEMORY being the glorious result. Bacharach and Costello are a natural fit; Costello has long been a proponent of extended melodic structures, irregular meter and sophisticated harmonies, on all of which Burt wrote the book. After Hal David, Bacharach never had another lyricist who could live up to his melodies-until now. Bacharach's melodiesand orchestrations here all hark back to his salad days of Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield. On "Toledo," he even employs that classic double-flugelhorn sound that is the trademark of his '60s work. The string arrangements are characteristically tart and catchy as hell. Reigned in by the pure pop of Bacharach's tunes, Costello abandons wordplay and extended metaphor, contributing the most straightforward lyrics of his career. Vocally, Elvis is in crooner mode, pushing his upper range and vibrato for all they're worth, investing every tune with palpable emotion. SKU: 1001041

Heartache
Unlike other MCA reissues of Cline's material, HEARTACHES is a little short on the details: no liner notes, no session personnel, no recording dates, just 10 of the singer's recordings and a cover shot of the post--1960 pop-version Cline. The material leans towards the latter part of her career, with Decca-period hits like "Crazy" and "I Fallto Pieces." Other tunes also bear the pop touch, with strings, other orchestral elements, and backup vocals by the Jordanaires. Curiously, however, this collection includes the earlier version of "Walkin' After Midnight," the one that actually sounds like country, with its wailin' steel guitar mixed right up front (Cline recut this early hit of hers in 1961 with, you guessed, the Jordanaires and a more refined, milder groove in place of the heavy country shuffle of the version included here). Cline's vocals break with emotion and soar effortlessly regardless of the material, and the later tunes here have another kind of charm for anyone who enjoys fishing for irony in lounge-infested waters. Cline and producer Owen Bradley were aiming straight at the early '60s pop market, and they scored cocktail-flavored bullseyes with tunes like "Heartaches" and "She's Got You." SKU: 5047972

Transplants
Transplants: Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar, bass, samples); Rob Aston (vocals); Travis Barker (drums). Additional personnel: Davy Havock, Son Doobie, Eric Ozenick (vocals); Dave Garlock (guitar, synthesizer, bass, background vocals); Craig Fairbaugh (guitar); Vic Ruggiero (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Matt Freeman (bass); Lars Frederiksen (background vocals); Brody Armstrong. The self-titled Transplants album represents Rancid vocalist Tim Armstrong's variant on that great rock & roll staple, the side project. As is often the case with such endeavors by members of famous bands, TRANSPLANTS was recorded bit by bit overthe course of a couple of years (presumably during Armstrong's downtime from Rancid). Still, it all hangs together with its raw, organic vibe. Though loops and synthesizer are present nearly every cut, the album maintains an agreeably rough-and-ready rock & roll feel. Fans of Rancid should feel at home with the punk quotient here, but healthy doses of hip-hop, funk, and reggae are injected into the mix as well, and Armstrong shares vocals with cohort Rob Aston throughout the album. All The Best
Stiff Little Fingers: Jake Burns, Ali McMordie, Henry Cluney, Brian Faloon. Includes liner notes by Gordon Ogilvie. In their late '70s/early '80s heyday, Stiff Little Fingers were among the most clever and ferocious purveyors of melodic, message-oriented punk rock around. Combining teenage angst with a guttural rageat the British presence in Northern Ireland, they managed to put out several classically raw platters before their inevitable implosion (and eventual reunions with progressively fewer members, but that's another story). ALL THE BEST is a two-disc set that captures the choicest material from their first three indispensable records, plus some rarities and live tracks to boot. For those fans so parochial as to think that Irish music is exclusively of the Clancy Brothers and Chieftains variety, "Suspect Device" and "Nobody's Hero" will be a pleasant wake-up call. Also included are essential gems such as "Alternative Ulster," "Just Go For It," and even a live version of "White Christmas." ALL THE BEST is an excellent introduction to one of the best political punk bands of all time. SKU: 1001861

Rage For Order
Queensryche: Geoff Tate (vocals, keyboards); Michael Wilton, Chris DeGarmo (guitar, backgroundvocals); Eddie Jackson (bass, background vocals); Scott Rockenfield (drums, percussion). Recorded at M.D.H. Studios, Bellevue, Washington and Le Mobile Remote Sound Studio Mushroom Studios, Vancouver, Canada. Includes liner notes by Paul Suter. With its 1983 self-titled EP and 1984's full-length debut, THE WARNING, Queensryche began as a heavy metal band. But that wouldn't last for long--the members of Queensryche had always been admirers of progressive and art rock, and with the band's third record, 1986's RAGE FOR ORDER, Queensryche began merging its heavy rock with instrumental technicality and modern production techniques. Few other metal bands were challenging their listeners as much as Queensryche, and the group slowly built a hardcore following. Although it wasn't the commercial success that future releases such as 1988's OPERATION: MINDCRIME and 1990's EMPIRE would be, RAGE FOR ORDER is considered to be one of the group's finest by longtime fans. The album's lone video, "Gonna Get Close to You," is a creepy tale of surveillance that remains one of Queensryche's all-time best tracks (strangely, it's one of the few tracks the group has ever recorded that it didn't write itself). Other standouts include the album-opening story of vampirism, "Walk in the Shadows," as well as such unusually titled tracks as "I Dream in Infrared," "Neue Regel," "Chemical Youth (We Are Rebellion)," and "Screaming in Digital." RAGE FOR ORDER set the stage perfectly for Queensryche's next release, OPERATION: MINDCRIME. SKU: 5048065

Viva Last Blues
Palace Music: Will Oldham (vocals, guitar); Bryan Rich (guitar); Liam Hayes (piano, organ); Ned Oldham (bass, slide guitar, background vocals); Jason Loewenstein (drums, background vocals). Perhaps inspired by producer Steve Albini, Will Oldham turned up the volume on VIVA LAST BLUES, the hardest-rocking album in the Palace canon. Picking up on the thread ofthe AN ARROW THROUGH THE BITCH EP, Oldham dives headlong into the Neil Young/Crazy Horse sound that's always been a stylistic guidepost to the work of the band. Surging electric guitar riffs and powerful drums mark the sound of "Work Hard/Play Hard," "Cat's Blues" and others. The downcast folk-poet sound of yore isn't entirely absent though, as evidenced by the touching, romantic ballad "We All, Us Three, Will Ride" and the poignant, countryish "New Partner." A well-balanced album, and one of the finest in the Palace catalog. SKU: 5049665

Ultimate Collection, The
Smokey Robinson And The Miracles includes: William "Smokey" Robinson, Warren "Pete" Moore, Ronnie White, Bobby Rogers, Claudette Robinson (vocals). The Hitsville Studio "Funk Brothers" Band includes: Robert White, Eddie Willis, Joe Messina, Marv Tarplin, Dennis Coffey, Melvin "Wah-Wah" Ragin (guitar); Danya Hartwick (flute, piccolo);Lanny Austin, Teddy Buckner, Hank Crosby, Lefty Edwards, Eli Fontaine, Kasuka Mafia, Larry Nozero (saxophone); Billy Horner, Floyd Jones (trumpet); George Bohanon, Bob Cousar, Carl Raetz, Paul Riser, Don White, Jimmy Wilkins (trombone); Joe Hunter, Johnny Griffith (keyboards); Joe Williams, Clarence Isabell (bass); Benny Benjamin, Uriel Jones, Andrew Smith (drums); Jack Ashford, Eddie "Bongo" Brown (percussion). Producers include: Smokey Robinson, Warren Moore, Al Cleveland, Berry Gordy, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Includes liner notes by Stu Hackel. Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves. Smokey Robinson's compositions blended pop and R&B conventions, infusing the combination with a highly literate lyrical sensibility that set his songs apart from the pack. With his group the Miracles, Detroit native Robinson got in on the ground floor of the Motown explosion, as his songs and his voice--a smooth, liquid marvel of soul--resonated not only with label head Berry Gordy, but with legions of '60s teens. Throughout the '60s, Robinson and the Miracles produced countless pop-soul hits, both effervescent ("Going to a Go-Go") and mournful ("The Tracks of my Tears"). Robinson's flexible, almost Cole Porter-ish way with a lyric made him an in-demand songwriter for many of his contemporaries, like Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye and the Marvelettes. After splitting from the Miracles in 1972, Robinson began a solo career, exploring the more introspective, balladic side of his music. His 1975 album QUIET STORM set the bar for virtually every smooth, romantic R&B singer of the next two decades, virtually defining the style. After a fallow period, he made a comeback in the early '80s, with commercial-but-irresistible hits like "Cruisin'" and "Being With You." SKU: 5070745

Collins (congas, percussion); Clydie King, Venetta Fields (background vocals). Producers include: Jac Holzman, Jerry Yester, Dick Kunc, Paul Rothschild, Tim Buckley. Compilation producer: James Austin. Engineers include: Bruce Botnick, Stan Agol, Dick Kunc. Recorded between August 1966 & July 1974. Includes liner notes by Lee Underwood & Barry Alfonso. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch & Bill Inglot (DigiPrep). It's taken America a long time to come around to the magic of '60s/'70s troubadour Tim Buckley. During his tragically brief, incredibly prolific lifetime, Buckley proved to be a truly eclectic visionary, careening madly from folk-rock to boldly experimental work to quirky R&B and more. His unearthly, elastic tenor was a thing of rare beauty, as Buckley weaving his way through a song with the abandon of a rocker and the fluidity and grace of a jazzman. Buckley never broke through commercially, but his reputation has subsequently grown to impressive cult status. While he's long been revered in other countries, his homeland never even eked out a decent collection of his work until this two-disc marvel. Hardcore Buckley fans might complain that MORNING GLORY contains only one previously unreleased song (an enthralling "Song to the Siren" taken from a MONKEES episode), but they'd been cateredto by a wealth of live and unreleased material becoming available in the previous few years. For anyone just discovering Buckley, or simply desirous of one definitive compilation, this is a gem. In the sunny folk-jazz of "Strange Feelin'," the eerie artsong "Song to the Siren," and the lascivious R&B of "Hong Kong Bar," MORNING GLORY portrays a brilliant, mercurial artist whose destiny would remain sadly unfulfilled. This collection's one flaw is the absence of Buckley's most avant garde works, but it still contains an embarrassment of riches. SKU: 1054720

Broken Frame, A
Depeche Mode: David Gahan (vocals); Martin Gore (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer); Andrew Fletcher (keyboards, synthesizer). Recorded at Blackwing Studios, London, England. When pop mastermind/main songwriter Vince Clarke departed DM after the group's first album to form Yaz with Alison Moyet, it seemed like the end for the boys from Basildon, but it was really a new beginning. Martin Gore stepped forward to fill Clarke's songwriting shoes, surprising the world by taking his predecessor's catchy electro-pop approach a step further. Lighthearted delights like "A Photograph of You" and "The Meaning of Love" show Gore's mastery of breathlessly catchy popcraft and help cement the notion of early Depeche Mode as the Beach Boys of the New Romantic era. Elsewhere though, Gore ventures further afield, both lyrically and musically. "Shouldn't Have Done That" combines sociopolitical observations with uncoventional sound collage techniques a la (don't laugh) Simon & Garfunkel's "Save the Life of My Child." "Monument" and "Satellite" suggesta darker undercurrent that would soon rise to the fore of the group's sound. SKU: 1002760

Soul Vaccination (Tower Of Power Live)
Tower Of Power: Jeff Tamelier (vocals, guitar); Emilio Castillo (vocals, tenor saxophone); Brent Carter (vocals); Norbert Stachel (tenor saxophone); Stephen "Doc" Kupka (baritone saxophone); Bill "Churchy" Churchville (trumpet, flugelhorn, background vocals); Jesse McGuire (trumpet, background vocals); Nick Milo (keyboards, background vocals); Francis Rocco Prestia (bass); David Garibaldi (drums). Recorded live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, California on October 10, 1998; the Fox Theatre, Stockton, California on October 8, 1998. Very few live shows can match the bristling energy of Oakland's Tower Of Power at their funky best. This live set from their 1998 30th anniversary tour captures all the raw excitement and relentless pace of the hardest grooving soul band since James Brown's JB's. Featuring dynamic vocalist Brent Carter, the world famous TOP horns and the return of original drummer David Garibaldi, the 1998 version of the group proved to be the tightest lineup sincetheir heyday in the '70s. For diehard fans, these powerful performances are an invigorating assurance that the funk will go on. Many TOP hits are here, including the startlingly funky "Soul Vaccination" and the fiendishly grooving "Down To The Night Club (Bump City)." Also on the list are the group's '90s favorites "Soul With A Capital 'S'," "So I Got To Groove" and the raucous tribute to JB himself, "Diggin' On James Brown." Fueled by Garibaldi's crisp syncopation and bassist Rocco Prestia's supple bass lines, the horns blow hard throughout the show, especially on funky gems like "You Got To Funkifize" and the monster hit "What Is Hip." If you haven't caught TOP live, this is the next best thing. SKU: 5068005

Passages
Personnel includes: Ravi Shankar (vocals, sitar); Philip Glass; S.P. Balasubramanyam, Madras Choir, Jeannie Gagne (vocals); Shubho Shankar (sitar); Partha Sarady (sarod); Barry Finclair (violin, viola); Tim Baker, Mayuki Fukuhara (violin); Al Brown (viola); Seymour Barab (cello); Theresa Norris, Ronus Mazumdar (flute); Jon Gibson (soprano saxophone); Richard Peck, Lenny Pickett (alto & tenor saxophones); Peter Gordon (French horn); Keith O'Quinn (trombone); Joe Carver (bass); Abhiman Kaushal (tabla). Producers: Kurt Munkacsi, Ravi Shankar, Suresh Lalwani. Recorded at Kodandapani Audio Lab, Madras, India and at The Living Room Studios, New York, New York. Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass met in Paris in 1965, when Glass was a young aspiringcomposer and Shankar was confirming his place in the world's classical canon. Shankar acted as an informal mentor to Glass, and their interaction inspired Glass to consider the possibilities of rhythm. By the time they joined forces at a New York City studio, in 1989, the two occupied a more level playing field. PASSAGES differs from previous collaborations that Shankar had undertaken with Western musicians such as Yehudi Mehuhin, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and George Harrison. On four of the six pieces, the two don't improvise together so much as refine each other's material, while on the remaining tracks, each composer is entirely responsible for the final composition. Shankar's lush orchestrations are most evident on "Prashanti" and the graceful "Ragas in Minor Scale," while Glass's repetitions manifest most hauntingly on "Channels and Winds." But on the finest tracks, "Offering" and "Meeting Along the Edge," their individual talents are subsumed into the collective experience. SKU: 5068044

Strange Liberation
Dave Douglas Quintet: Dave Douglas (trumpet); Chris Potter (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet); Uri Caine (Fender Rhodes piano); James Genus (acoustic & electric basses); Clarence Penn (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Bill Frisell (guitar). Recorded at Right Track Studio, New York, New York in January 2003. In the same way that trumpeter Dave Douglas's THE INFINITE hearkened back to the sound of Miles Davis's first classic quintet, and FREAK IN looked to Davis's early-1970s electric fusion, STRANGE LIBERATION recalls Davis circa NEFERTITI and IN A SILENT WAY. Also like Davis, Douglas surrounds himself with only the best musicians going--saxophonist and bass clarinetist Chris Potter, drummer Clarence Penn, and bassist James Genus are in the lineup here. The cool, often funky sound of Uri Caine's Fender Rhodes and the incomparable electric guitar work of Bill Frisell flesh out Douglas's complex, ever impressive compositions. But Douglas is by no stretch an imitator. Building on Davis's inventions to create fresh music that intrigues, challenges, shifts, and soars, Douglas has made a classic jazz album for the 2000s. The leader's writing and playing make use of traditional bop and minimalist concepts (especially on "A Single Sky" and the architectural ups and downs of the title track). With Potter, Douglas winds contrapuntal melodies around the rhythm section, which, in turn, pushes and opens the music to abet the mercurial, atmospheric work of Caine and Frisell. This is music that builds on the past while looking to the future--it's modern jazz of the first order. SKU: 6551134
