She Hangs Brightly
Mazzy Star: Hope Sandoval (vocals); David Roback (guitar). This dark and dreamy psychedelic band pairs former Rain Parade and Opal guitarist Dave Roback with vocalist Hope Sandoval. Drawing primarily from the swirling, textured drone of such '60s groups as The Velvet Underground and The Doors, Mazzy Star also incorporates blues, country, and pulsing acoustic folk elements, creating a highly textured and luminous amalgam. The band's auspicious debut, SHE HANGS BRIGHTLY is a rich, atmospheric bag of tricks. Such songs as "Halah," "Ride It On," and "Be My Angel" emphasize the duo's folk/pop origins but add layers of effect-drenched guitar and intimate, pristine production to achieve gorgeously ethereal results. The title track and "Ghost Highway" are more blues-based and recall the simmering and evocative ethic of heavyacid-rock. Sandoval's languid, earthy vocals are the perfect foil for Roback's lysergic explorations, and SHE HANGS BRIGHTLY is undoubtedly the band's finest moment. SKU: 5068116

Death Before Musick
Californiapunk-metal band's third studio album follows 2000's 'We Have Come For Your Parents'. Spending three years in limbo after being dropped by Virgin, firebrand frontman Casey Chaos returns with a new band and a new deal with System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian's Eat Ur Music imprint. Sounds, if possible, even more outraged than before, with Chaos bellowing his vitriolic political diatribes over a wall of raging hardcore guitars. SKU: 6551443

THE RISING won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "The Rising" won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. THE RISING was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year."The Rising" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Song Of The Year. Considering that the last time Bruce Springsteen collaborated with the E Street Band for a full album of new material was on 1984's epochal BORN IN THE USA, it's entirely appropriate that their 2002 album THE RISING should be forged from images strongly linked to the events of September 11th, one of America's most trying times. Virtually every song here is related to that tragedy either directly or indirectly. Some, like the surging "My City in Ruins" and the melancholy "Empty Sky" largely eschew metaphor, while others approach the situation from more oblique angles. "Mary's Place" is a rousing roots-rocker about finding joy in the face of sadness, while both the Eastern-flavored "Worlds Apart" and the homegrown "Let's Be Friends" address the need for communication and understanding between disparate entities. Musically, many of THE RISING's songs are in wide-screen, anthemic mode, as Bruce and company attempt to rally their wounded country with positivity and clear-eyed optimism without shrinking from unpleasant reality. The interstitial ballads take the poignant storytelling mode Springsteen employed on his last new album, 1995's THE GHOST OF TOM JOAD, and apply it to THE RISING's more universal themes. Whatever the format, the enthusiastic camaraderie of the E Streeters and their Boss is audible and infectious. SKU: 1082163

Real Life
This is a limited edition of 5,000 copies, packaged in a "miniature" replica of the original vinyl LP's sleeve. Simple Minds includes: Jim Kerr (vocals); Peter Vitesse (keyboards); Malcolm Foster (bass). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Simple Minds' first '90s album is also the first album where the group is reduced to the duo of singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill, plus backing musicians.Kerr and Burchill, always the band's musical core, handle the transition from band to duo with grace; REAL LIFE sounds more like a classic Simple Minds album than anything they'd released since 1984's UP ON THE CATWALK. In places, however, the resemblance is slightly too close. The single "Travelling Man" bears more than a little likeness to the 1984 hit "Waterfront"; even more blatantly, "Let the Children Speak" is simply the 1981 instrumental "Theme for Great Cities" with added new vocals and lyrics by Kerr. On the other hand, better that Kerr and Burchill plagiarized themselves than repeat the Springsteen-meets-U2 sound that marred 1989's STREET FIGHTING YEARS. SKU: 4123151

Bound To Happen/Wow
2 LPs on 1 CD: WOW... (1971)/BOUND TO HAPPEN (1969). Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarntino (1997, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). WOW...: Personnel: William Bell (vocals); Eddie Hinton, Jimmy Johnson, Terry Manning (guitar); Barry Beckett (keyboards); David Hood (bass); Roger Hawkins (drums); Kim Weston, Patrice Holloway, Jessie Smith, Mickey Stevenson, Booker T. Jones, The Nightingales (background vocals). Producer: Al Bell Principally recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Musle Shoals, Alabama in October 1970. BOUND TO HAPPEN: Personnel includes: William Bell (vocals); Michael Toles, Steve Cropper (guitar); The Memphis Horns (horns); James Alexander, Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). Producer: Booker T. Jones. Engineers: Ron Capone, Terry Manning, Bobby Manuel. Principally recorded at Ardent Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee on January 9, 1969. William Bell's WOW (1969) and BOUND TO HAPPEN (1971) couldn't sound more unalike. WOW is the Stax aesthetic writ large, whereas BOUND TO HAPPEN is more urbane and much less down-home in feel. Taken together, as presented here, the music is simply excellent all around. As a rule, Bell is not as gritty as his mentor Otis Redding. Bell is primarily a gospel crooner, although he does get down and dirty, Redding style, on "A Smile Can't Hide (A Broken Heart)." Other highlights include "Happy," one of the Stax factory's occasional Motown emulations, a definitive version ofBell's classic "Born Under a Bad Sign," and the wrenchingly intense "My Whole World is Falling Down." Let's Face It
Personnel includes: Brian Dewyer, Dan McLaughlin, John Rosenberg, Sean Slade. Recorded at Bearsville Sound Studios, Bearsville, New York and Fort Apache Studios, Cambridge, Massachusets. Among the leading exponents of the so-called third wave of ska, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones won the devotion of the two-tone crowd by marrying a heavy-metal guitar roar to the skanky downbeat. On LET'S FACE IT, the Boston octet's fifth album, the rock roar has been subdued in some places and expanded in others. On the one hand, the band has refocused on its Jamaican musical tradition: "Royal Oil" features a completely dubbed-out bass line, and "The Rascal King" is as radio-friendly as any Specials classic. But the arena-punk-rock side of the Bosstones is enlargedand furthered as well. "Desensitized" is all thrash roar and funky horns; "That Bug Bit Me" cops a Rocket From The Crypt hook, line and sinker; and "Numbered Days" opens with a mock-Clash riff and then heavies up into Metallica territory (complete with a James Hetfield-esque vocal turn from Dicky Barrett). It all goes to show that you can simultaneously learn your history and not repeat it. SKU: 3101005

Phenomenon (Clean Version)
Personnel: LL Cool J, Redman, Method Man, Cannibus, DMX, Ralph Tresvant,Ricky Bell, Busta Rhymes, The Lost Boyz, Tamia, Keith Sweat (vocals); L.E.S. (various instruments); David Foreman (guitar); Myron Mckinley (Fender Rhodes); Erick Sermon (keyboards, bass, drums); Kern Brantley (bass); James Gamble (drums); Dent, Poke, Tone, Curt Gowdy (programming); DJ Scratch (scratches); LeShaun Williams, Shantel Jones, Kenny Greene (background vocals). Producers include: Sean "Puffy" Combs, Trackmasterz, Poke, Tone, Erick Sermon. Engineers include: Michael Patterson, Lane Craven, Ken Ifill. Over the years, hip-hop's reigning king has accomplished much more than the average rapper. With his own book, television sitcom, and, oh, yeah, a stack of platinum-selling albums, LL Cool J is proof-positive that hip-hop can translate to the mainstream with it's integrity intact. PHENOMENON comes 12 years after his debut, and LL still represents the essence of true hip-hop. LL's success is probably due to his ability to cross over without selling out, and to his versatile style. The hard-core rapper that "rocked the bells" in 1986 coexisted with the sensitive smoothie who "needed love" from all the ladies. And in 1997, while LL Cool J makes it "Hot, Hot, Hot" on an incendiary, Puffy-produced track, James Todd Smith tells his story of growing up as an abused child on "Father." SKU: 5047503

Suede's third album, and their first without main songwriter Bernard Butler, lacked none of their trademark glam rock and catchy melodies, but, crucially, it discarded the pomposity and indulgence that marred DOG MAN STAR. Instead, boosted by Richard Oakes' inventive guitarwork and the arrival of Neil Codling on keyboards, they presented a sparsely produced collection of Bowie-tinged pop songs. Brett Anderson's favourite lyrical themes--bored youth, casual sex, seedy urban life ("peepshows and freakshows") and escape from it--enjoyed free rein, but were predominantly framed within raunchy rockers rather than gloomy ballads. With the likes of "Trash," "Filmstar" and "She," Suede firmly establishedthemselves as the godfathers of indie glam and offered some classic pop into the bargain. SKU: 1074932

Yes
Morphine: Mark Sandman (vocals, guitar, tritar, piano, 2-string slide bass, chamberlin); Dana Colley (tenor & baritone saxophones); Billy Conway (drums). Additional personnel: Frank Swart (bass). Engineers: Mike Denneen (tracks 1, 5); Paul Q. Kolderie (tracks 2-4, 11); Paul Q. Kolderie, Tim O'Heir (track 6); Mike Denneen, Paul Q. Kolderie, Tim O'Heir (track 7); Scott Fritz (track 8); Frank Swart (track 9); Han Nuyten (track 10); Mark Sandman (track 12). All songs written by Mark Sandman except "The Jury" (Morphine/Frank Swart). Morphine's Mark Sandman thinks he's the king of alternative romance; the smooth tones of his ultra bassy band--no guitar, but a saxophone--purr elegantly. YES, Morphine's third release, offers Sandman's sleekest, most consistent songwriting efforts to date, and the band has never sounded so inviting. Morphine is as close as alternative rock comes to jazz. It's swinging bass lines sound impossibly low, complete with a rain-like drum beat and smoking sax lines. What sets Morphine's rich tones apart from swank background music is Sandman's highly physical lyrical angle. In the dizzying "Whisper," when Sandman soothes "Don't worry I'm not looking atyou/Gorgeous and dressed in blue," you can see the color. When he croons, "Just whisper me your number/I'll call you up at home," you've already mouthed the words. Sandman knows where he's aiming, and, at it's best, Morphine recalls the jazzy excitement of rock's lushest moments. SKU: 5047802

3 (Limited Edition) [Digipak]
Soulfly includes: Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar, sitar, berimbau); Mikey Doling (guitar, percussion); Marcelo Diaz (bass, percussion, sound effects, background vocals); Roy Mayorga (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Otto D'Agnolo (keyboards); Greg Hall (drums). Recorded at Chaton Studios, Phoenix, Arizona. Sorcerers of speed metal, protectors of the mighty thrash, knights of the double kick drum--Soulfly are out to take no prisoners with their third album--titled, of course, III. Ex-Sepultura mainman Max Cavalera pulls out all the stops with a heart stopping melange of churning, screaming guitars, throaty Cookie Monster vocals, and polyrhythmic percussion that, occasionally combinedwith sampled effects, is simultaneously hypnotic and overwhelming. "Downstroy" starts as the band means to continue--full-tilt, while the climax of "Enterfaith" incorporates a bowel-loosening kick drum attack that makes one thankful for the comparatively low-key "One" that immediately follows. There's a Portuguese language track ("Brasil"), followed by a charmingly mesmerizing downtempo interlude in the first couple of minutes of the extended "Tree of Pain," which of course soon metamorphoses into a more literal musical representation of agony. With a pedigree like Cavalera's musical satisfaction is practically guaranteed, and the melding of speed, thrash and nu-metal with imaginative sampling and Brazilian rhythms here conveys a musical depth that makes III a consistently absorbing experience. Test For Echo
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass); Alex Lifeson (acoustic & electric guitars, mandola); Neil Peart (drums, hammered dulcimer). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York and Reaction Studios, Toronto, Canada from January to March 1996. In 20-plus years together, Rush has rarely varied from its basic formula--two parts musical chops, one part lyrical smarts, and one more part musical chops. This power trio knows its strengths. Drummer Neil Peartwrites intelligent lyrics here about global subjects ranging from the Internet ("Virtuality") to comparative religion ("Totem"). But it keeps coming back to the trio's musical interplay, and Rush's ever-ready willingness to experiment with it. Alex Lifeson adds a nice touch to "Half The World" with a mandola, while Geddy Lee's synthesizer flourishes and off-kilter rhythm on "Time And Motion" are vintage Rush. The most exciting demonstration of Rush's group synchronicity is on the instrumental "Limbo." It starts with the sounds of clinking chains and a bubbling cauldron, before charging forward--occasionally soaring--on waves of guitar, synth and disembodied voices (including a sample from "The Monster Mash"). This is the sound of an intellectual band smart enough not to take itself too seriously. SKU: 5048224

Vision Thing
Sisters Of Mercy: Andrew Eldritch (vocals, guitar, programming); Tim Bricheno, Andreas Bruhn (guitar); Tony James (bass). Recorded at Puk, Denmark. The third Sisters Of Mercy album, VISION THING, makes a dramatic shift from its predecessor, introducing heavy metal riffs to the band's genre-defining goth sound. Far from signifying a fundamental change in Andrew Eldritch's sound (once again, he had a new group of musicians with him, keeping only the drum machine, Doktor Avalanche), this combination is an excellent sonic fit. The swaggering machismo of heavy metal sits nicely next to Eldritch's studiously straight-faced delivery ofhis colossally egocentric (and intentionally funny) lyrics. Opening with the monster riff of the title track, VISION THING is a note-perfect parody of metal, while also pushing the boundaries of goth, something the Sisters have done consistently with each of their releases. Standouts include "Ribbons," where the guitars alternately call to mind crashing waves and thunderclaps, and the caustic lyrics end in a desperate howl. "Doctor Jeep" is a jittery, caffeinated swipe at American commercialism, and "More," a masterpiece of bombast built on a big, chugging guitar riff, incorporates everything from sawing, synthesized violins and a piano fade out, to gloriously selfish lyrics and swooping backing vocals. Gangsta's Paradise [PA]
Personnel: Coolio, Talkbox, Malika, E-40, Kam, 40 Thevz, Rated R, Jeremy Monroe, Leek Ratt, PS, Ras Kass, WC, Shorty, PS, Capucine Jackson (vocals); Romeo, Jammin' James (various instruments); Stan "The Guitar Man" Jones (guitar, bass); Chris Fletcher, Darryl Crookes, Eric "Funkyworm" Park, Brian James (guitar); "Roy Dog" Pennon (keyboards, bass); Chris Hamabe, Devon Davis (keyboards, programming); Frank"Spade" Cannon (keyboards); Charles "Charlie Macc" Anderson, Andrew Gouche (bass); L.V., Trinna Simmons, J.T. Taylor, Shaunna D., Baby G., Lashanna Dendy, Will Wheaton (background vocals). Producers include: Coolio, Christopher Hamabe, Devon Davis, Doug Rasheed, Brian "The Wino" Dobbs. Engineers: Bob Morse, Mark Nathan, Patrick MacDougall. Recorded at Echo Sounds, Los Angeles, California and Studio 56, Hollywood, California. The single "Gangsta's Paradise" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. The single was also nominated for Record Of The Year. "Sumpin' New" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance, and GANGSTA'S PARADISE was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rap Album. "Be it wrong or right...these are the geto highlites." In that one line lies the genius of Coolio (even if he can't spell "ghetto"). From this disc's first track--a short dialogue that sums up both the violent, inexorable sameness and the strange attraction of ghetto life--to the Grammy-winning title track, Coolio and his crew take an unflinching look at life on the streets of America. The music--sampled from, and made possible by, the likes of Stevie Wonder, the Evasions and Kool And The Gang--stays compelling throughout. Despite his hard-edged stance, Coolio shows a decided preference for summertime cruising grooves, the kind that make you wanna put your arm up on a hot aluminum door strip and watch the underworld go by. Worship And Tribute [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Glassjaw: Daryl Palumbo (vocals); Justin Beck, Todd Weinstock (guitar); Dave Allen (bass); Larry Gorman (drums). WORSHIP AND TRIBUTE was nominatedfor the 2003 Grammy Awards For Best Recording Package. Hailing from the wilds of Long Island, Glassjaw find themselves continuing to rewrite the rules of aggro-rock with their major label debut WORSHIP AND TRIBUTE. Once again aided and abetted by uber-nu metal producer Ross Robinson, this hard-hitting quintet changes gears on the turn of a dime and can go from the brutal assault of "Pink Roses" to the moodier rumblings of ""Must've Run All Day" with its ethereal keyboard washes. With guitarists Justin Beck and Todd Weinstock providing the firepower, Glassjaw proves more than the equal of any of their more well established peers, whether on the swirling maelstrom that is "M.U. Empire" or the heavy grooves that permeate "Cosmopolitan Bloodloss." Frontman Daryl Palumbo has the chops to either keep up with the breakneck pace fueling the insistent "Radio Cambodia" or make like Joe Jackson on the far mellower and melodic "Ape Dos Mil." There's even a System Of A Down-like utilization of unorthodox time changes within the epic bars of "The Gillette Cavalcade Of Sports." Glassjaw are poised to turn the world of new metal on its collective head. SKU: 1074466

777
Steve Hillage's post-Gong career stands as an example and inspiration to aging hippies fighting musical obsolescence. After channeling his extraordinary guitar skills into a series of increasingly out-there "solo" albums, Hillage joined keyboardist Miquette Giraudy, enlisted such preeminent dance-floor forces as Derrick May, The Orb's Alex Paterson and Thrash, Youth (Killing Joke), and Paul Oakenfold, and set his sights on the conquest of technopolis. System 7's eponymous debut (1991) worked Hillage's scintillating glissandos and six-string cascades, Giraudy's glittering melodies, and crafty production into a sumptuous stew of beats that straddled techno, trance, world, pop, and ambient musics. For 1992's astonishing 777, Hillage and Giraudy teamed up with Paterson and Youth (again), Tony Thorpe, and such talented engineers as Greg Hunter, Jim Abbiss, and Dare Mason. Thorpe/Youth/Hillage's "7:7 Expansion" sets the controls for the heart of an ever-growing, pulsating trance groove. Hunter's glorious "Desir (Ghost Mix)" and "On The Seventh Night" work a middle ground between emotive Detroit-styled techno and storming ethnodelic club fare. The Orb boys take the reigns on "A Dry Cool Place," supplying "ambience and navigation" through crystal-world rainforest atmospherics and lush wall-to-wall rhythms. Hillage's liquid-glass guitar work defies gravity throughout, particularly on the jaw-dropping ending triad. SKU: 1084711

Bigger And Deffer
Personnel includes: LL Cool J (rap vocals); Bobby "Bobcat" Erving (scratches). Producers: LL Cool J, The L.A. Posse, Darryl Pierce, Dwayne Simon, Bobby Erving. Recorded at Chung King House Of Metal, New York, New York. BIGGER AND DEFFER was the album which took LL fromup-and-coming artist to the mantle of both pop star and rap legend. The title track, the album' s opening mission statement was only one of BIGGER AND DEFFER's memorable hits--"I Need Love," a disarmingly gentle ballad pushed the rap genre in a new direction, contrasting the album's otherwise hard edge with "soft" keyboard track and a confessional, vulnerable lyric. "Go Cut Creator Go" blends crushing guitars and myriad other samples in what remains one of hip-hop's slickest turntable tracks. Though the requisite hometown shoutouts abound, LL extols the virtues of one of New York's less-frequented attractions in "The Bristol Motel," a sordid spot in his native Queens. SKU: 3100898

Motley Crue (Expanded) [PA]
Contains bonus tracks. Motley Crue: John Corabi (vocals, guitar, 6-string bass); Mick Mars (guitar, sitar, mandolin, 6-string bass); Nikki Sixx (piano, bass, background vocals); Tommy Lee (piano, drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Bob Rock (guitar, mandolin); Sammy Sanchez (mandolin); Hook Herrera (harmonica); Scott Humphrey (synthesizer, programming); Glenn Hughes, Marc Lafrance, Dave Steele (background vocals). Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California and Little Mountain Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Includes liner notes by Nikki Sixx. After a decade of platinum success, Motley Crue parted ways with vocalist Vince Neil. In 1994, the band released its self-titled album to an industry that had seen much change since 1989's DR. FEELGOOD. With Nine Inch Nails atop the charts, the JohnCorabi-led Crue went for a darker sound. Although the record surprised longtime fans upon release, hindsight has proved that the album rocks as convincingly as any Crue effort. "Power to the Music" and "Hooligans Holiday" are grunge-metal tracks with a radio friendly vibe. "Misunderstood" is a powerful track about people whose lives have passed them by. The hippyish "Loveshine" takes a cue from Led Zeppelin's prime years. "Hammered" ferociously drives its anti-drug message home thanks to the skin bashing of Tommy Lee. "Babykills," a rare bonus track, includes studio banter from the band. "Livin' in the Know," one of two unreleased tracks, tells of bassist Nicki Sixx's disgust with the band's lawyers. MOTLEY CRUE continues to gain admiration among Crueheads as the years go by. Though it's a departure from the band's classic glam-metal sound, MOTLEY CRUE still sports a take-no-prisoners attitude, the mark of a great Crue record. SKU: 1084758

Piece Of Cake (Remastered And Expanded)
Mudhoney: Mark Arm (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, piano, organ); Steve Turner (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica, keyboard bass); Matt Lukin (vocals, bass); Dan Peters (vocals, marimba, drums). Additional personnel: Conrad Uno, Emily Bishton, Scott McCaughey, Tad Hutchison, Bob Whittaker, Steve Turner, Matt Lukin (background vocals). Recorded at Egg Studios, Seattle, Washington. PIECE OF CAKE contains 4 un-named tracks of varying lengths (25-39 seconds). With record labels flocking to Seattle to sign the next big thing after such groups as Nirvana and Pearl Jam hit it big, several of the area's older independent acts were finally signed too, such as the Melvins (who had moved away from Seattle) and Mudhoney. The band's 1992 PIECE OF CAKE was much ballyhooed in the press as the album that would put these beloved garage rockers over the top. While it didn't prove to be the huge smash everyone predicted, it was nearly impossible to not hear Mudhoney's name connected to the genre's big names every time they were mentionedon TV or in the press. PIECE OF CAKE shows the band sticking closely to its original direction on such tracks as "No End in Sight," "When in Rome," and "Suck You Dry," with the amps cranked up to eleven, and Mark Arm's lyrics dripping with sarcasm. Shleep
Personnel: Robert Wyatt (vocals, Polish fiddle, trumpet, keyboards, bass, percussion); Alfreda Benge (vocals); Paul Weller, Jamie Johnson (guitar, background vocals); Phil Manzanera, Philip Catherine (guitar); Chikako Sato (violin); Evan Parker (soprano & tenor saxophone); Annie Whitehead (trombone); Brian Eno (synthesizer, background vocals); Chucho Merchan (acoustic bass, percussion); Gary Azukx (djembe); Charles Rees (background vocals). Recorded at Phil Manzanera's Gallery Studio, Chertsey, England, between 1996 and 1997. Includes liner notes by Robert Wyatt. He first came to public attention as the drummer/singer of British jazz-rockers Soft Machine, but since the mid-'70s, Robert Wyatt has been known as an innovative, idiosyncratic singer-songwriter. Like much of Wyatt's previous work, SHLEEP(his first album since '91's DONDESTAN) incorporates jazz, rock, world music and the kind of art-song cum prog-pop that has become a Wyatt trademark. Wyatt's high, rough voice is one of the most distinctive, powerful instruments in modern music, and it navigates the unconventional hills and valleys of his melodies with grace and verve. Fellow prog vets/soul brothers Brian Eno (whose early pop records are distant cousins of Wyatt's music) and Phil Manzanera are on hand, as are Wyatt disciples like Paul Weller and saxophonist Evan Parker, contributing to the lush, but far from overproduced sound of SHLEEP. One of the most striking differences between this and Wyatt's other work is the lyrical shift from the political to the personal. While he's always been adept at combining the two, the change marks SHLEEP as the most direct, emotional album of this complex, uncompromising artist's career. SKU: 5048169

Ultramega OK
Soundgarden: Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil,Hiro Yamamoto, Matt Cameron. Soundgarden's first full-length release, 1988's ULTRAMEGA OK, showed that there was more than met the eye to this fast-rising Seattle quartet. The group's first two releases, the EPs SCREAMING LIFE and FOPP, were both straight-ahead sludge rock, but ULTRAMEGA OK broadened the musical scope. While monolithic garage riffing and punk's messy energy were still both integral parts of the sound, healthy doses of punk and heavy metal were now added to the rich mix as the group's songwriting and instrumental prowess improved greatly. The opening "Flower" brings to mind '60s-era acid rock, while other highlights include the barnstorming "All Your Lies," the witchcraft metal of "Beyond the Wheel," the vast "Mood for Trouble," the plodding blues of "Incessant Mace," and a cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning."
