Open Land
Personnel: John Abercrombie (guitar); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Kenny Wheeler (trumpet, flugelhorn); Mark Feldman (violin); Dan Wall (organ); Adam Nussbaum (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, New York in September 1998. Neither guitarist John Abercrombie nor producer Manfred Eicher's ECM label are often thought of in connection with dissonant, almost aggressive music, which makes the powerful OPEN LAND that much more of a surprise. Moving away from the guitar/synthesizer experiments Abercrombie favored in the early '90s towards a more traditional electric guitar tone, his playing here is at times fierce and never less than dazzling. With nine tracks in just under 65 minutes, the song structures of OPEN LAND are a bit more compact than Abercrombie usually favors; his solos are consequently more streamlined and intense. The full-band arrangements, featuring violin, tenor sax, organ, flugelhorn, trumpet, and drums are as interesting as that lineup suggests. The opening "Just Tune In" dazzles, and that high standard is maintained throughout, especially on the centerpiece "Free Piece Suit(e)." SKU: 5063646

Restless
Personnel: Sara Evans (vocals); Marcus Hummon, Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); J.T. Corenflos, Troy Lancaster (electric guitar); Gary Morse (steel guitar, dobro); Bryan Sutton (banjo); John Mock (penny whistle); Peter Kevin Fisher (harmonica); Timothy Lauer (accordion); Barry Green, Mike Haynes (horns); Steve Nathan (piano); John Hobbs (Hammond B-3 organ); Michael Rhodes, Glenn Worf (bass); Matt Chamberlain (drums); David Huff (shakers, percussion, programming); Eric Darken (percussion, programming); Vince Gill, Wes Hightower (background vocals). Principally recorded at The Money Pit, Nashville, Tennessee. While Sara Evans hasn't assimilated the rock-pop influence into her contemporary country sound to the same bold degree as someone like Shania Twain, she's certainly informed by those sensibilities. There are plenty of rootsy touches to the arrangements here to remind us that this is Nashville, not Hollywood, but the predominance of power ballads and the quality of Evans's big, belting voice suggest what might have happened if Pat Benatar had been a country girl. One can't help wondering, for instance, how conscious the lyrical nod to the Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man" might be in Evans's "Backseat of a GreyhoundBus." And once you've sunk your teeth into a big, juicy Diane Warren torch song like the epic production "Need to Be Next to You," you're on your way to pop divahood whether you like it or not. Get A Grip
Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, keyboards, harmonica, mandolin, percussion); Joe Perry (vocals, guitar, dulcimer); Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (electric bass); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Desmond Child (vocals, keyboards); Don Henley, Lenny Kravitz (vocals); Thom Gimbel (saxophone, keyboards, background vocals); John Webster (keyboards, programming); Richie Supa (keyboards); Mapuhi T. Tekurio, Melvin Liufau, Wesey Mamea, Liainaiala Tagaloa, Sandy Kanaeholo, Aladd Alatina Teofilo Jr. (Polynesian log drums). The Margarita Horns: Tom Keenlyside (saxophone); Ian Putz (baritone saxophone); Paul Baron, Bruce Fairbairn (trumpet); Bob Rogers (trombone). Recorded at Little Mountain Sound Studio, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. "Livin' On The Edge" won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and was nominated for Best Rock Song; "Cryin'" was also nominated for Best Rock Song in 1994. "Crazy" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. By 1993, Aerosmith's comeback was in full swing, and GET A GRIP proves that, after soldiering on through drug problems and interpersonal tensions, the band wasn't about to let its new lease on life get away. Most of the material on GET A GRIP is a far cry from the band's celebrated '70s work, both structurally and in terms of production. But while the sound is a bit more panoramic, incorporating more keyboards and a grander, more pop-oriented approach, Steven Tyler and the boys have lost none of their fire here. Tyler's voice may have changed a bit over the years, but what he's lost in sheer lung power he's gained in character, and on the power ballad "Crazy" (one of the biggest hits of the band's career), he demonstrates the passionate poignancy he's capable of. While there are more pop-friendlytunes here than on some of their earlier albums, GET A GRIP does not lack for sheer rocking energy. Songs such as "Livin' on the Edge" are fueled by Joe Perry's distinctive rock-god guitar work, and the Perry-Tyler songwriting team generates both musical sophistication and four-on-the-floor hard rock. Life's Rich Pageant (Remastered)
R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar); Mike Mills (bass, keyboards, background vocals); Bill Berry (drums). Additional personnel: Steve Berlin (horns); Carl Marsh (synthesizer). Recorded at Sound Emporium, Nashville, Tennessee. R.E.M's later albums have sold by the container load, but they had to make albums like this to build a fan-base that brought them to notice. A number of critics place this record as their best. The band do soundas though they are having to work to be heard; there is significant energy in 'Finest Worksong' and their Byrdslike 'Welcome To The Occupation'. It has been some time since Michael Stipe had as many words to say as he did in 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It', and 'The One I Love' has to be one of their best songs of all time. Dehumanizer
Black Sabbath:Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Vinny Appice (drums). Additional personnel: Geoff Nicholls (keyboards). Recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales, England. In 1992, a reunion of the Black Sabbath mark II lineup occurred, garnering a sigh of relief from the worldwide fans of the group. In the '80s and early '90s, the metal outfit went through countless personnel changes and perhaps should have been called The Tony Iommi Project. This reunion with Ronnie James Dio was a precursor to the four original members reuniting in December 1997. DEHUMANIZER is a thunderously heavy album. The band sported a "take no prisoners" attitude in showing they could rock even harder than a decade earlier. "TV Crimes," the album's first single, is a fast and furious number featuring the drumming talents of Vinny Appice. Songs like "Masters of Insanity" and "Sins of the Father" contribute to the album's dark feel. "Time Machine" is the standout track, and a second version from the WAYNE'S WORLD 2 soundtrack is featured. Dio's voice ages like fine wine, and Geezer Butler's inventive bass line dominates the track. DEHUMANIZER is the sweet fruit of this mark II reunion. SKU: 1001790

Songs Of Freedom
Personnel includes: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Aston Barrett (guitar, bass); Earl "Chinna" Smith (guitar); Dean Fraser, Tommy McCook (saxophone); Rita Marley, Peter Tosh, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths (background vocals). Producers include: Leslie Kong, Clement Dodd, The Wailers, Johnny Nash, Lee "Scratch" Perry. Engineers include: Lee Perry, Carlton Lee, Alex Sadkin. Includes liner notes by Rob Partridge, Rita Marley, Derrick Morgan, John "Rabbit" Bundrick and Timothy White. During his all-too brief life, Bob Marley established himself as one of the giants of modern music; he stands on par with the likes of Miles Davis and Bob Dylan, performers who took established musical forms and revolutionized them, who continually evolved their vision throughout their careers. From his first single, the bouncy "Judge Not," through a loose, live rendition of the haunting "Redemption Song" performed at his last stage appearance, SONGS OF FREEDOM documents Bob Marley's musical legacy better than any previous compilation, and probably, better than any likely to come. Marley was at his peak at the time of his death in 1981, meaning there is no filler or weak material here, only four solid discs of great songs. His philosophical evolution is easily seen: listen to a rude-boy anthem, like theearly hit "Simmer Down," next to a later exploration of Rastafarianism, such as "Crazy Baldheads," and eventual statements of pan-Africanism in songs like "Zimbabwe" and "Africa Unite." Musically, Marley's music expanded just as far. He utilizes Stylistics-like harmonies on "High Tide Or Low Tide," incorporates early-80's R&B into the sound of "Could You Be Loved," and even throws a basic blues shuffle into the alternate mix of "Three Little Birds." SONGS OF FREEDOM is exhaustive and beautifully packaged. It is loaded with previously unreleased material, songs from the Ska years, the late-60's Lee Perry productions, and all of the highlights of the Island years. There are extended versions of famous singles like "Exodus" and "Jammin'" so that we can hear dub aspects of the music that only Jamaicans and hardcore fans were previously aware of. Outside Jamaica, reggae begins and ends with Bob Marley. SONGS OF FREEDOM goes a long way to explain why. SKU: 5062970

Infidels [SACD]
Personnel includes: Bob Dylan (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Mark Knopfler, Mick Taylor (guitar); Alan Clarke (keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums, percussion). Recorded at the Power Station, New York, New York. After using SLOW TRAIN COMING, SAVED and SHOT OF LOVE as sounding boards for his born-again Christianity, Bob Dylan took a trip to Israel amidst rumors that he was repudiating his new faith and embracing his Judaic roots. Upon returning from his overseas excursion, Dylan went straight into the studio with co-producer Mark Knopfler and emerged with INFIDELS, a record that found the legendary singer-songwriter recording songs that were more of a political nature than a religious one. Backed by a band that includes Knopfler and ex-Stone Mick Taylor on guitar and the legendary reggae rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, Zimmy's biting songs don't lack for solid musical support. Speaking out with conviction, Dylan uses the hard-driving "Neighborhood Bully" to praise Israel'sfortitude amidst a sea of hostile Arab relations, while the feisty troubador rips into corporate greed within the barrage of twangy country guitar that defines "Union Sundown." "Jokerman," one of Dylan's most enduring songs, offers a flirtation with reggae, with Dylan blowing away on harmonica as Knopfler provides the perfect accompaniment with his distinctive guitar work. Days Of Open Hand
Personnel includes: Suzanne Vega (vocals, guitar); Marc Schulman (guitar); Anton Sanko (keyboards); Michael Visceglia (bass); Frank Vilardi (drums). DAYS OF OPEN HAND was Suzanne Vega's first album after SOLITUDE STANDING, an album that was released three years prior. That album yielded the surprise hit "Luka," and clearly Vega was taking her time fashioning a follow-up. DAYS OF OPEN HAND is a strong album of quiet rewards. It also finds her in a transition of sorts--Vega left her folk-singing beginnings behind in favor of a whole-hearted embrace of dance rhythms and the grand technological possibilities of the recording studio. Finely honed lyrics empower every song on this set, with quiet anger rubbing shoulders with hopeful romanticism, angst, melancholy, and the simple joys of watching the world. The song that most fully shows her standing at her own personal crossroads is "Book of Dreams." Though at its core a folk song, the track happily embraces lavish pop instrumentation. SKU: 1001424

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below [PA]
Includes an untitled hidden track at the end of THE LOVE BELOW CD. Outkast: Andre "3000" Benjamin, Antwan "Big Boi" Patton. Additional personnel includes: Sleepy Brown, Jazze Pha, Jay-Z, Killer Mike, Big Gipp, Ludacris, Rosario Dawson, Norah Jones, Kelis, Cee-Lo, Lil Jon, Mello, Slim Calhoun, Kuhjo Goodie. Producers include: Andre 3000, Mr. DJ, Big Boi, Carl Mo, DoJo 5. SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW won the 2004 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and for Best Rap Album. "Hey Ya." won for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. The song was also nominated for Record Of The Year. Simply put, there is no band that does anything close to what Outkast does. Big Boi & Andre 3000 have consistently managed to maintain mainstream success while obliterating the limits of what is considered to be hip-hop. Frolicking at the outskirts of language, they throw every genre into a blender and make every musical turn sound organic. SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW is actually two solo records fused together, the former by Big Boi, the latter by Andre 3000, with each mind working at an equally frantic pace to create a gloriously split sonic experience. Big Boi opens with a techno intro that fades into industrial-style grinding on "Ghettomusick," before settling into more traditional, although far from ordinary, rap tracks on "Unhappy" and "The Way You Move." His most salient moment comes on "War," an uncompromising condemnation of American politics that strikes the perfect balance of righteous rage and measured speech. When Dre takes the reins, the concoction gets wonderfully weirder with everything from the piano bar pop of "Love Hater" to the call and response of "She Lives in My Lap" to the mystery mix of the outstanding single "Hey Ya." Following the remarkable STANKONIA, SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW cements Outkast's position as rap innovators and keeps them inthe lead as the genre's primary visionaries. SKU: 6535923

Frank Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (conductor). Recorded from May to September 1958. Includes original liner notes by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen with additional notes by PeteWelding. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. For an artist of Sinatra's stature, an artistic peak is a thing of no uncertain majesty. Such a peak was reached on ONLY THE LONELY, with the invaluable assistant of arranger Nelson Riddle. Foreshadowed by the glorious sob-fest of IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS, this album is a case of serendipity, where songs, arrangement and performance all combine for an unrelenting dose of heartbreak. The ominous, film-noirish flatted-fifths of "Angel Eyes" set the scene for a cuckold's tale, which ends with Sinatra's evanescently graceful bow-out, "'Scuse me while I disappear." The timeless "One For My Baby," one of the songs most closely identified with Sinatra, finds him pouring his troubles out to a bartender, who simultaneously pours out the much-needed antidote to the singer's pain. ONLY THE LONELY is a devastating, perfectly rendered account of a man unable to escape the cage of his own shattered dreams . SKU: 3101089

London 0 Hull 4
With their music far too rooted in R&B, the Housemartins were never "officially" part of the C86 movement (named after a British music magazine's influential 1986 compilation album that featured the Wedding Present, Wolfhounds, Primal Scream, and others). But their jangling guitars, the social criticism of their lyrics, and their gleefully cynical outlook were fully in line with the C86-ers. The debut LONDON 0 HULL 4 (1986) is chock-full of catchy tunes, great lyrics, and Paul Heaton's exceptional vocals. This is one of the great records of the '80s. Standouts include the chipper "Get up off Our Knees," carried on a bright acoustic-guitar line and choral-type backing vocals, "Think For a Minute," a wistful track featuring Heaton's falsetto vocals, the percussion-and-bass-driven "We're Not Deep" (complete with sing-along "ba ba baba ba"s), and "The Mighty Ship," a hyper harmonica instrumental. The album's trio of gospel standards is also of note. A staggeringly brilliant take on Luther Ingram's "I'll Be Your Shelter" features Heaton's voice, alternately growling and soaring, a barreling piano, and a full-on choral backing. Start to finish, this record is a masterpiece. SKU: 1002519

Mermaid Avenue Vol.1
MERMAID AVENUE is a collection of previously unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics exhumed from the Woody Guthrie Archives and set to music by Billy Bragg and Wilco at the invitation of Guthrie's daughter Nora. Billy Bragg & Wilco: Billy Bragg (vocals, acoustic, electric & steel guitars, banjo, bouzuki); Jeff Tweedy (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica); Jay Bennett (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, banjo, bouzuki, dulcimer, piano, Clavinet, Hammond & Farfisa organs, melodica, electric bass, drums, percussion, background vocals); John Stirratt (piano, Hammond organ, acoustic & electric basses, background vocals); Ken Coomer (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Natalie Merchant (vocals); Corey Harris (electric & lap steel guitars, background vocals); Bob Egan (slide & pedal steel guitars); Eliza Carthy (violin); Elizabeth Steen (accordion); Peter Yanowitz (drums); Jonathan "JP" Parker (background vocals). Engineers include: Dave Trumfio, Mike Hagler, Matt Ellard. Recorded at Totally Wired Studio and Windmill Lane, Dublin, Ireland; King Size Sound Laboratories, Chicago, Illinois; Fort Apache Studio, Boston, Massachusetts. Includes liner notes by Billy Bragg. MERMAID AVENUE was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Woody Guthrie's gift to the world of music cannot be overstated. His songwriting helped to define folk music as we know it, as an instrument not only of musical creation, but of social change. Among those troubadours who carry on his tradition, England's Billy Bragg stands proud, for his musical talent and his social awareness alike. In 1995, Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, approached Bragg to set to music some of the hundreds of songs that the legend had left unfinished. The result, MERMAID AVENUE, recorded by Bragg with Chicago band Wilco, is equal parts tribute and collaboration. Joined by guest stars such as Natalie Merchant, slide guitarist Corey Harris, and violinist Eliza Carthy, Bragg more than does justice to the Guthrie legacy. From the rollicking opener, "Walt Whitman's Niece" to dreamy double-tracking of "She Came Along To Me," Bragg's gift for matching melody and lyric highlights the universality of Guthrie's music. Merchant's fragile vocal work on "Birds And Ships"is a thing of sublime beauty, while Jeff Tweedy's plaintive, rough timbre lends a particularly heart-rending quality to such tracks as "At My Window Sad And Lonely" and "Hoodoo Voodoo." Slow Motion Daydream [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Everclear: Art Alexakis (vocals, guitar); Craig Montoya (bass); Greg Eklund (drums). Additional personnel includes: Charlie Bisharat, Endre Granat,Phillip Levy, Julie Ann Gigante, Rafael Rishik, Renen Mandel (violin); Brian Dembow, David Waither, Matthew Funes, (viola); Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, David Low, John Walz (cello). Having always posited himself as the old, married guy of the post-grunge set, Everclear frontman Art Alexakis continues to explore this grown-up world on SLOW MOTION DAYDREAM. Alexakis maintains his observant, elder statesman role while warbling about the promiscuous bad-girl-turned-parent on the catchy "Volvo Driving Soccer Mom" and having taking a very Nirvana-like musical stance amidst the skewering of John Ashcroft on the pounding "Blackjack." Other targets include the nature of personal relationships (the churning "How to Win Friends and Influence People") and the struggles involved with battling ennui (hook-laden "TV Show.") Although the trio's trademark chunka-chunka guitar sound continues to permeate every corner of their sixth album, Alexakis does add a few compositional nuances to the mix. A prominent accordion gives "Chrysanthemum" a slight South Bank flavor, and a small string section casts a melancholy shadow over "Science Fiction." Although it might seem as though Art Alexakis finds doom and gloom in everything he writes about, the old softie manages to end on a sentimental note via the harmony-soaked "New York Times." High Voltage [ECD] [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Bon Scott (voclas); Malcolm Young, Angus Young (guitar); Mark Evans (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). The 2003 edition of HIGH VOLTAGE includes liner notes by Murray Engelheart. All tracks have been digitally remastered. HIGH VOLTAGE was the first chance America had to glimpse the raw power of Australia's best hard rock outfit. From their earliest days, lead guitarist Angus Young, a spastic dwarf-like riff-monger who wore nothing but traditional schoolboy attire, was leading this band of hooligans with gleeful perversity and balls-out ambition. The group's intent is perfectly clear from the disc's opening power chords: to distill rock and mutate the blues down to its barest essentials in a pulverizing whomp. Riding overthe top of the battering rhythm section is the all-to-true sneer of vocalist Bon Scott, who brings sexist anthems to a previously unachieved high (or low, depending on your reference point). With over-the-top stoppers about gonorrhea ("The Jack"), HIGH VOLTAGE is not for the faint of heart. The single from this record, "T.N.T," got AC/DC into rock radio rotation and gave metal fans a template of the brand of molten lava the band would later weld into perfection. The formula for which the group would eventually become famous--songs based around three crunching power chords and the high pitched squeal of a man who sounds like he's just been unleashed from the reformatory--is firmly established here. Live At Sin-E (Legacy Edition/+DVD)
This Legacy Edition of LIVE AT SIN-E includes a DVD. Solo performer: Jeff Buckley (vocals, guitar). Recorded live at Sin-e, New York, New York in August 1993. Includes liner notes by Mitchell Cohen, Mary Guibert and Steve Berkowitz. Listeners shouldn't get too hung up about Jeff Buckley's bloodlines--although they're impossible to ignore. His father was Tim Buckley, one of the most poignant, enigmaticfigures of the 1960s' folk scene; but young Jeff grew up with his mother and didn't even meet his father until one Easter when he was eight--two months before Tim Buckley's death. While the ecstatic, keening quality of Jeff Buckley's vocals recall the haunting timbre of his father's voice, there are also overtones of a young Robert Plant, Van Morrison, Delta blues legend Robert Johnson, Pakistani vocal master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and something indefinable--the sound of an individual talent beginning to blossom. On this splendid live EP, LIVE AT SIN-E, we hear Jeff Buckley transmuting, transforming and ultimately transcending his influences before an audience at a small Irish club in Manhattan's East Village. Standing there with nothing but his voice and an electric guitar, Jeff Buckley is simply mesmerizing. Buckley's Telecaster playing on "Mojo Pin" and "Eternal Life" is exceptional: orchestrating his vocals with a torrid stream of chords and melodic counterpoint, a la Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. He never descends into stock licks or hackneyed accompaniment; his classical arpeggios on Edith Piaf's "Je N'en Connais Pas La Fin" impart a calliope-like grace to her tune. The ecstatic nature of Buckley's art is showcased on his extended journey through Van Morrison's "The Way Young Lovers Do," where the lyrics gradually dissolve into long scatting choruses of wordless moans and cries, as his voice and flamenco-styled guitar evoke an almost gospel fervor. Buckley's lyrics are just as personal as his voice. "Mojo Pin" is a dreamscape full of delirious visions and moody imagery of lost love, while on "Eternal Life," his rolling blues chords set the tone for nightmares about his own mortality, recalling the tormented hellhounds of Robert Johnson. A talent like Jeff Buckley's comes along once in a lifetime, and LIVE AT SIN-E certainly whets the appetite for his first group recordings, due in August 1994. SKU: 1086945

Highway 61 Revisited [SACD]
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Michael Bloomfield Charlie McCoy (guitar); Al Kooper, Paul Griffin (piano, organ); Frank Owens (piano); Harvey Goldstein, Russ Savakus (bass); Bobby Gregg (drums). Engineers include: Peter Dauria, Roy Halee, Frank Laico. Recorded in Columbia Studios, New York, New York in June-August 1965. Includes liner notes by Bob Dylan. Though 1966's BLONDE ON BLONDE is usually singled out as the most innovative Bob Dylan album, its predecessor HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED is the one that definitively marks Dylan's transformation from progressive folk singer to visionary rock poet. It's Dylan's first fully electric album, powered by the manic intensity of Mike Bloomfield's skull-and-crossbones blues-rock guitar leads and Al Kooper's rich organ fills. While many of the songs are presented in a traditional 12-bar blues format, the lyrics find Dylan finally abandoning conventional linear narrative in favor of poetic abstraction, surreal imagery, and biting sarcasm. In the rock world, there has neverbeen a lambasting harsher or more cathartic than the excoriation of "Ballad of a Thin Man," and no challenge more bold than that offered in the iconic "Like a Rolling Stone." When Dylan invokes the names of Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot towards the end of the poetic epic "Desolation Row," he's not just name-dropping; he's merely delineating the company in which a work as rich and ground-breaking as HIGHWAY 61 belongs. Coda
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (keyboards, bass); John Bonham (drums). Engineers include: Andy Johns, Vic Maile, Eddie Kramer. Recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England on June 25, 1969; Olympic Studios, London, England on June 5, 1970; Royall Albert Hall, London, England on January 9, 1970; Rolling Stones Mobile At Stargroves on May 15, 1972; Polar Studios, Stockholm, Sweden on November 11, 16, and 21, 1978; Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland on September 12, 1976. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Released two years after Led Zeppelin's demise, CODA is a collection culled from the Zep archives. Omitting anything recorded between 1973 and 1978, this compilation features material from before and after this period. Starting with an equal mix of swing and crunch on Ben E. King's "We're Gonna Groove," everything between this and the portion of the record ending with 1973's "Walter's Walk" is fairly straightforward Zep. Willie Dixon's "I Can't Quit You Baby" is given a reverential treatment at a 1970 sound rehearsal and "Poor Tom" shows off some of John Bonham's more regimented playing alongside Jimmy Page's chiming acoustic guitar. The remainder of CODA is comprised of outtakes from the IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR sessions. "Ozone Baby" bobs and weaves with punky (for Zep) vigor and "Darlene" grooves along as John Paul Jones' impressive piano playing serves as the rudder. Although the grinding power found within the measures of "Wearing And Tearing'"s stop-and-start rhythms ably displays Led Zepplin's might, the instrumental "Bonzo's Montreaux" is the most interesting inclusion. This rare glimpse into Bonham's underrated percussive range points to his irreplaceable position in Zeppelin and clearlydemonstrates why the band broke up after his death. SKU: 1084124
