No Guru No Method No Teacher [Remastered]
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals); Chris Michie, John Platania (guitar); Nadine Cox (harp); Kate St. John (oboe, English horn); Richie Buckley (soprano & tenor saxophones); Martin Drover (trumpet); Jeff Labes (piano, synthesizer); David Hayes (bass); Baba Trunde (drums); Bianca Thornton, Jeanie Tracy, June Boyce, Rosie Hunter (background vocals). Recorded at Studio D & Record Plant, Sausalito, California; Townhouse Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered from the original master tapes by Ian Cooper. When Van Morrison released 1986's NO GURU, NO METHOD, NO TEACHER, he'd spent the better part of the '80s rediscovering himself through spiritual pursuits ranging from born-again Christianity to dabblings with Scientology. Morrison's introspection led to his writing songs for GURU pertaining to everything from actively re-exploring his roots ("Got To Go Back") to the spiritual battle between good and evil ("Here Comes The Knight"). Part of this rebirthinvolved a heavy dose of Celtic mysticism in the shape of "Tir Na Nog" and "In The Garden," a song which included the album's title in its lyrics in an off-handed swipe at those critics trying to trivialize his religious explorations. Although the heavy-duty imagery on this record left many fans of Morrison's lighter, swinging '70s material puzzled, the marriage of beautiful musical arrangements and magical lyrical compositions makes NO GURU an overlooked gem in the canon of the Belfast Cowboy. About Time
Personnel includes: Steve Winwood (vocals, piano); Jose Neto (guitar); Walfredo Reyes Jr. (drums). Rock star pedigrees don't get much more esteemed than that of former Spencer Davis Group/Traffic/Blind Faith singer/keyboardist Steve Winwood. Though Winwood gained enough fans with his massive '80s solo pop hits to garner a huge audience with little (if any) knowledge of his past, the long-time faithful will feel a kinship with the pared-down, newly energized feel ofABOUT TIME. For his first album released under his own imprint, Winwood keeps things direct and simple. Though Winwood's previous solo album, 1997's JUNCTION SEVEN, was a much slicker affair, the roots of ABOUT TIME lay in the presence of the earlier album's guitarist Jose Neto and percussionist Walfredo Reyes, and particularly the JUNCTION SEVEN track "Got to Get Back to my Baby," which foreshadowed ABOUT TIME's Latin-influenced, heavily percussive direction. While Reyes's percolating beats breathe fresh life into Winwood's sound, one of the most important developments is that the keyboard wizard is tearing it up on the organ once again, just like back in the glory days of Traffic et al. The resultant stylistic paradigm comes off something like a modernized version of Santana with a considerably higher soul quotient, full of instrumental torque and affecting lyricism in equal measure. Spilt Milk
Jellyfish: Andy Sturmer (vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums); Roger Manning (vocals, keyboards); Tim Smith (vocals, bass). Additional personnel: Lyle Workman, Jon Brion (guitar); T-Bone (bass). Producers: Jack Joseph Puig, Albhy Galuten, Andy Sturmer, Roger Manning. The psychedelic graphics of Jellyfish's 1989 debut BELLYBUTTON have little to do with the straightforward power-pop of its contents, but both were dumped for the band's second and final album. SPILT MILK is still a power-pop album, but the Badfinger/Big Star elements are downplayed in favor of big, glammy Queen-like choruses and multilayered Electric Light Orchestra-styled production. The anthemic single "The Ghost At Number One" is the epitome of this new'70s-influenced style, with the album's other single, "New Mistake," nearly as winning. With original guitarist Jason Falkner replaced by Jon Brion (later a noted producer; interestingly, Falkner and Brion formed the Grays after Jellyfish's breakup), the guitars have a more textured, processed sound that fits in well with Roger Manning's Technicolor keyboards and the spirited harmonies of Manning and drummer Andy Sturmer. SPILT MILK is one of the better power-pop albums of the '90s. SKU: 3101493

Now I Got Worry
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion: Jon Spencer, Judah Bauer (vocals, guitar); Russell Simins (drums). Additional personnel: Rufus Thomas (vocals); Justin Berry (saxophone); Mark Ramos-Nishita (piano, Clavinet, organ); Thermos Malling. Engineers include: Mario Caldato, Jr., Doug Easley, Jim Waters. Recorded at Easley Studio, Memphis, Tennessee; G-Son, Los Angeles, California; and Waterworks West, Tucson, Arizona. NOW I GOT WORRY finds punk bluesman Jon Spencer and his band now genuinely interested in themusicality of the blues, rather than the mere surface attitude of the genre. The guitar work has become technically advanced, with respectable solos popping up throughout this album. The production firmly places the band down in the Mississippi Delta, with a scratchy, rusty sound--you can almost smell the mildew growing on the amps. It appears the Blues Explosion has also become interested in the textural ramifications of the blues. The band experiments with a dub-like sense of space on some songs, adding layers of raw percussion and vintage keyboards to the signature sweaty guitars, making for a more complex and challenging sound. But the Blues Explosion, while now embracing a more academic approach, has not forgotten how to boogie. This band is still a raucous force, with another album of rump-shaking songs under its belt. Trampin' [Digipak]
'Trampin' is the ninth album from the highly influential Patti Smith and follows 2000's 'Gung Ho'. Recorded mostly live, without overdubs, the album is very much in thevein of Smith's earlier work with her lyrics being inspired by 9/11 and the 2003 war in Iraq. The album also features a guest appearance from Smith's daughter Jesse playing piano on the closing track 'Trampin''. SKU: 6553262

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap [ECD] [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Bon Scott (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Mark Evans (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). Recorded in 1976. Originally released as Atlantic (16033). Includes liner notes by David Wild. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Although it wasn't released stateside until '81, DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP is an Australian compilation recorded in the mid-70's. By the time of its U.S. release, singer Bon Scott had already died of alcohol poisoning and the band had emerged from the tragedy with new singer Brian Johnson and the stunning BACK IN BLACK. This album then, perhaps inadvertently, serves as an epitaph for the late, tattoo-emblazoned singer. And there is no more fitting eulogy than the title track, which captures Scott in all his raunchy glory. Full of ill will, Scott snakes his way through a nasty tale of revenge. He's only too happy to provide TNT, concrete, cyanide, whatever ittakes really, to get the job done. As he snarls, growls, and finally squeals, "high voltage!" Scott is immortalized in complete reptilian glee. Though the title tracks alone makes the album essential; there are other significant merits. The utterly tasteless hilarity of "Big Balls" is a not-so-subtle pun Beavis and Butthead would undoubtedly have worshipped. "Ride On" is a toned down blouse groove that is complete out of step with AC/DC's usual onslaught. All in all, DIRTY DEEDS is a fine collection that shows these Australian bad boys doing what they do best. SKU: 1080637

Yerself Is Steam
Mercury Rev: Jonathan Donahue (vocals, guitar); David Baker (vocals); Grasshopper (guitar); Suzanne Thorpe (flute); Dave Fridmann (bass); Jimmy Chambers (drums). Additional personnel: C. Gavazzi (trumpet). While somewhat more based in the feel and forms of "rock" than Mercury Rev's subsequent releases, the band's 1992 debut is still nothing less than a gem of late-20thcentury psychedelic pop innovation. The kooky, expansive opener, "Chasing A Bee," which infuses an ironic, slow motion dream narrative with excruciatingly beautiful squalls of guitar noise, gives voice to the band's epic, utterly unique sonic project. What follows is a breakneck visitation of punk aggression, folk/pop melodicism, VU-inspired drone explorations, quirky cartoon nightmares ("Blue and Black" sounds like Syd Barrett on a particularly bad day) and shimmering, never-ending waves of echo and chorus-drenched guitars, feedback and generally blissful noise designed to elevate brains. YERSELF IS STEAM is the first in Mercury Rev's astonishingly impressive string of records, and merits the attention of both newcomers and fans of the group's later work. SKU: 1000541

Discover America
Personnel includes: Van Dyke Parks, Murray Adler, John Audino, Israel Baker, Roger Bobo, Norm Botnick, Gary Coleman, Bonnie Douglas, Karen Ervin, Roy Estrada, George Fields, Anne Goodman, Jim Gordon, Richie Hayward, Milt Holland, Kirby Johnson, Myra Kestenbaum, Gayle Levant, Lew McCreary, Al McKibbon, Malcolm McNab, Gordon Marron, Jay Migliori, Dan Neufeld, Jeffrey Reynolds, Frederick Scykora, Paul Shure, Dennis Smith, Tony Terran, The Trinidad Steelband. Engineers include: Robert Appere, Bruce Botnick, Doug Botnick. Includes original liner notes by Van Dyke Parks. Van Dyke Parks' DISCOVER AMERICA came four years after his audacious debut. Where SONG CYCLE created its own orchestral tapestry of poetic and hallucinogenic Americana, its successor adopted Caribbean styles. Far from leaving the USA behind, however, this record is a series of glimpses into the social, cultural and political headlines from the first half of the twentieth century in America. Herein are celebrations of the Mills Brother, Franklin Roosevelt,Jack Palance, and Bing Crosby. Parks' interest in Trinidadian steel-drum bands was given full flower (he also produced an album by the Esso Trinidad Steel Band around this same time), and their color serves as a joyful counterpoint to string sections and small combos of guitars, bass, drums, piano and horns. It says a good deal about Parks' skills as an arranger, producer and singer that Lowell George's "Sailin' Shoes" sounds right at home on an album with Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." Shaving Peaches
The follow up to 1996's 'Regular Urban Survivors' saw the band head in a more chart oriented pop direction with co-production from Edwyn Collins. Here, the band push their sound further than before, veering away from metal towards a soft rock sound that utilises actual electronic beats. 'Day After Day' and 'When I Die' retain the melancholy that featured on earlier albums, whilst the rest of the album follows the template of the positive and upbeat single, 'Tequila'. SKU: 3101390
