Gets Next To You
Personnel includes: Al Green (vocals); Teenie Hodges (guitar); Ed Logan (tenor saxophone); James Mitchell (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Charles Hodges (organ); Leroy Hodges (bass); Al Jackson (drums); Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes (background vocals). Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, Originally released on Hi (32062). Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. GETS NEXT TO YOU, like Green's debut, overflows with cover songs that show this soulster to be a disciple of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. Like Redding, Green pulled material from Motown (in this case, a vamped up version of the Temptations' "I Can't Get Next To You") along with less likely rock hits (Green unleashes his unique phrasing on the Doors' "Light My Fire"). Like Cooke, Green made ballads a specialty. "Tired Of Being Alone," which reached the top 20, was the first in a long string of Green ballads tofloat up the charts. Green's pleading falsetto, set above Teenie Hodges' understated guitar playing, a punchy horn section and creamy-sounding backing vocals, set the bar higher for all ballads recorded afterward. Because he had such a mastery of slow songs, it's easy to overlook Green's funkier side, which shows up on the Stax-flavored "I'm A Ram" and a rollicking cover of Roosevelt Sykes' "Driving Wheel." And Green tipped his hat to the psychedelic soul movement of the early '70s by writing the Sly Stone-inspired "Right Now, Right Now." SKU: 1007389

Live At The Whitney
Personnel: Duke Ellington (spoken vocals, piano); Joe Benjamin (bass); Rufus Jones (drums). Recorded live at The Whitney Museum, New York, New York on April 10, 1973. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. Though he was a marvelously inventive pianist, Duke Ellington never gave solo performancesuntil late in his career, and only a total of three times in ten years. This was the third and final of his recitals, from 1972 at The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. As his orchestra concerts of the time also did, this set draws from material spanning his career, with standards and surprises rubbing shoulders comfortably. Ever the congenial host, Duke offers words to the audience that are both instructive and friendly. He's joined for part of the show by drummer Rufus Jones and bass player Joe Benjamin, serving nicely to show another aspect of Ellington's skills, as he floats over, around and through this supple rhythm section. From blues to stride to pop and orchestral music, Ellington not only lives through and embraced much of the 20th century's music, he also helped shape it. SKU: 6535146

We Are The Streets (Explicit)
The Lox: Sheek, Styles, Jada. Additional personnel includes: Eve, Kasino, Drag-On, Swizz Beatz. Producers: Swizz Beatz, DJ Premier, Timbaland, P.K. Engineers: E-Plugg, Don Elliot, Chris Theis. After a well-publicized request to break from Bad Boy Records, The Lox hit the streets again with an aptly titled sophomore album WE ARE THE STREETS. Now part of the Ruff Ryder/Interscope family, The L.O.X. (Living Off eXperience) packs 14 new tracks into a complete package of street beats, ghetto flavor and mic skills. With slick production from top producers such as Swizz Beats ("WildOut"), DJ Premier ("Recognize"), Timbaland ("Ryde or Die, Bitch") and P.K. ("Breathe Easy") WE ARE THE STREETS will keep your attention from first listen. Some of the other tracks worthy of attention are "U Told Me," notable for its contribution from Eve, "Can I Live" featuring Kasino, "Y'all Fucked Up Now," and "If You Know," which features the lyrical talents of Swizz Beats, Drag-On and once again, Eve. The L.O.X does not disappoint, and WE ARE THE STREETS is everything a great hip-hop album should be; catchy, hard-hitting, well produced, and very real. SKU: 1028118

Mad Dogs And Englishmen [Remastered]
Personnel: Joe Cocker (vocals); Leon Russell (guitar, piano); Don Preston (guitar, background vocals); Bobby Keys (tenor saxophone); Jim Price (trumpet); Chris Stainton (piano, organ); Carl Radle (bass); Chuck Blackwell (drums, percussion); Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner (drums); Bobby Torres (congas); Sandy Konikoff (percussion); Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, Daniel Moore, Donna Weiss, Pamela Polland, Matthew Moore, Donna Washburn, Nicole Barclay, Bobby Jones (background vocals). Producer: Denny Cordell, Leon Russell. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Recorded live at The Fillmore East, New York, New York on March 27 & 28, 1970. Originally released on A&M Records (6002). Includes liner notes by J.P. Bean. Digitally remastered by Theresa Malham (MCA Music Media Studios, Los Angeles, California) and Suhu Gur (Universal Music Studios, Edison, New Jersey) One of the first classic post-Woodstock albums, MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN was recorded at precisely the moment that Cocker and his bandleader Leon Russell found themselves, howeverbriefly, at the epicenter of the rock & roll universe. The big hits here--the juiced-up version of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright," the Memphis soul revamp of the Box Tops "The Letter"--have been ubiquitous for years, and remain as potent as ever. Some of the less familiar tracks are equally rewarding though, particularly the Cocker/Russell duet on Dylan's "Girl From the North Country" (with the composer in attendance), and the obscure early Ray Charles raver "Sticks and Stones." This one shot ensemble (including veteran British musicians and the cream of then current L.A. sessioneers) was a great band, however unwieldy (twenty-one members!) and we're lucky to have this document of its only tour. Procol Harum...Plus [Remastered]
This 1998 reissue includes 10 bonus tracks not on the original release. Procol Harum's debut album contains all of the group's trademarks to full effect. The band combined R&B with a classically tinged two-keyboard approach, and, in Gary Brooker, had a singer of rich and soulful passion. Procol Harum's first album wasreleased a few months after the band's enormous hit "A Whiter Shade of Pale" captured the attention of large portions of the world. However, that song was not included on the original PROCOL HARUM. PROCOL HARUM... PLUS includes the band's breakthrough track as well as nine other bonus cuts. The poetic imagery of lyricist Keith Reid provides the band with words that perfectly fit the amalgam of moods the instrumentalists capture. The band's third single, "Conquistador," opens this set, while their second single, "Homburg," is included as a bonus track. This collection is laden with treasures, including the punchy "A Christmas Camel." SKU: 5049331

Hats
Finding a category into which the critics can slot them has been a problem for this excellent Scottish band. File under 'very good quality pop' no longer exists on the record label. For the uninitiated, they have the soulful, wandering nature of John Martyn, mixed with some anthemic U2, plus a tolerable doseof Deacon Blue/Simply Red. A strong synthesizer backdrop may deter, but the lush arrangements are truly lovely. Paul Buchanan has an emotive voice that is well suited to his melancholic material. Three albums in nearly 15 years is hardly prolific, but they are critically acclaimed and quality is always better than quantity. SKU: 3102205

Rockin' The Suburbs
Personnel includes: Ben Folds (vocals, various instruments); Frally Hynes, John McCrea (vocals); Richard Fortus (guitar); Larry Corbett (cello); DJ Swamp. Recorded at Krell Studios, Adelaide, Australia; The Mix Room and Ben Grosse's House, Los Angeles, California. For ROCKIN' THE SUBURBS, Ben Folds has subtracted two from Ben Folds Five (bassist Robert Sledge & drummer Darren Jessee) and the remainder is one. While math may not be Folds' strong point, penning witty, intelligent pop tunes has been his forte from the beginning. With his solo debut, he proves himself eminently capable outside the safe structure of his able band. Of all the 70's/80's pop icons to which Folds is frequently compared (i.e. Billy Joel, Elton John, Joe Jackson), Todd Rundgren rings the truest. If one extends that comparison, "Still Fighting It" (with its instantly memorablerefrain "it sucks to grow up") is Folds's "Hello It's Me," a somewhat simple yet subtly moving and eminently catchy ballad made for radio play. On the title track, Folds proves he hasn't entirely grown beyond the goofball humor that first captured his audience's attention ("y'all don't know what it's like being male, middle-class and white") as he rags on either himself or (more likely) angry young rock bands like Limp Bizkit. This balance struck between sober maturity and youthful playfulness makes ROCKIN' THE SUBURBS a provocative record. SKU: 1065378

False Start
Love: Arthur Lee (vocals, guitar, piano); Gary Rowled (guitar); Frank Fayad (bass); George Suranovich (drums). Additional personnel: Jimi Hendrix (guitar). Love's original lineup splintered in 1968 under mounting intra-band tension. For many fans this was for all intents the end, but leader Arthur Lee quickly put together a new version of the band featuring guitarist Jay Donnelan, bassist Frank Fayad, and drummer George Suranovich. 1971's FALSE START is the third and last album by Love's second incarnation, with the recently departed Donnelan replaced by a string of hired guns. A couple of tracks even feature solos by Jimi Hendrix, an old friend of Lee, who had given the then-fledgling guitarist his first session gig on an otherwise-forgotten single by Rosa Lee Brooks. The opening Hendrix-esque wah-wah onslaught of"The Everlasting First" quickly recedes into an anguished yet surprisingly melodic blues-rocker that's among Lee's best post-FOREVER CHANGES tunes. FALSE START is not Lee's best work, but it's far from his worst. SKU: 1002611

Van Halen [Remastered]
Van Halen: David Lee Roth (vocals); Eddie Van Halen (guitar, background vocals); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Alex Van Halen (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California in 1978. Quite simply put, no-one had seen or heard anything like it. Roth's flamboyant showmanship, with the microphone dangling provocatively between his legs on the cover, and EddieVan Halen's monstrously inventive guitar playing became a textbook for air guitarists the world over. From the instrumental blow-out of "Eruption," the gritty teen pop of "Feel Your Love Tonight," to the strutting riff around which "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" was built and the grandiose reworking of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me," Van Halen set their own absurd standards. One of the truly great rock and roll/metal debut albums. SKU: 1053851

Loose Blues
Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone); Jim Hall (guitar); Ron Carter(bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums). Recorded at Nola Penthouse Sound Studios, New York, New York on August 21 & 22, 1962. Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This long-lost recording session features the late pianist with tenor man Zoot Sims and other musicians that are all jazz legends in their own right. There are a couple of interesting facts that surround LOOSE BLUES. First, it may be the only Gil Evans release that features all Evans compositions. Second, the reason it was never released was due to difficulties the sidemen were having with the tunes. (Evans' composing always sounded flowing and beautiful, but his tunes were, in reality, quite harmonically and rhythmically difficult.) LOOSE BLUES was shelved simply because Evans was not happy with the results. This reissue, however, shows that the music was actually much better than Gil Evans thought. It's fascinating to hear such long-forgotten Evans obscurities as "There Came You," "Fudgesickle Built For Four" and "Fun Ride." Moreover, Evans classics such as "Funkallero," "My Bells," and the haunting "Time Remembered," are heard performed superbly by the pianist and his all star ensemble. LOOSE BLUES is a must for any serious Bill Evans fan. SKU: 1004287

VH1 Storytellers [PA]
Personnel: Billy Idol (vocals); Steve Stevens (acoustic & electric guitars); Joseph Simon (piano, Hammond B3 organ); Steve McGrath (bass, background vocals); Mark Shulman (drums, background vocals); Greg Ellis (percussion); Stella Soleil (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Bill Flanagan. While it might seem incongruous for a rock & roll rebel like Billy Idol to perform on an ostensibly introspective songwriters show like VH1's STORYTELLERS, he pulls it off with the same adaptability that allowed him to move from punk upstart to pop star to rock veteran with such seamlessness. In all honesty, it's rather a kick to hear the familiar moody guitar intro from "White Wedding" played on acoustic guitar, especially knowing that it's longtime Idol cohort Steve Stevens doing the picking. Surprisingly, Idol's wildman bellow modulates quite well to a lower dynamic on this song and such others as "Flesh For Fantasy" and the R&B cover tune "To be a Lover." The all-acoustic format doesn't stop Idol and his stripped-down bandfrom rocking out on "Cradle of Love" and the Generation X (his old punk band) staples like "Ready Steady Go." What's more, the STORYTELLERS setup seems tailor-made for tackling one of the aforementioned band's finest tunes "Kiss Me Deadly," which seemed out of place amid the roar of late-'70s punk but is flattered by it's treatment here. Wire: Colin Newman (vocals, guitars); B.C. Gilbert (guitar); Graham Lewis (bass, vocals); Robert Gotobed (drums). Additional personnel: Kate Lukas (flute); Mike Thorne (keyboards, synthesizers). A euphemism for insanity, Chairs Missing is an apt summation of Wire's disturbing music. A product of London's punk scene, the quartet nonetheless owed a debt to the art-school experimentation of the mid-60s, a contrast that gave their craft originality. Oblique pop songs, including 'Outdoor Miner' and 'I Am The Fly', exemplify Wire's development from the abrasive minimalism of earlier releases, while their widening musical perspectives are reflected in theedgy 'Practice Makes Perfect'. Producer Mike Thorne adds keyboards and synthesizer to the group's guitar-based attack as Chairs Missing established Wire as one of the most innovative bands of their era. SKU: 1077169

15 Levels Of Magnification
Riz Maslen cut her teeth working with Future Sound of London, honing a talent for the dense and complex sound construction that surfaces in her music. Much has been made of Maslen's ascension into electronic music's loftiest fraternal ranks, oftenovershadowing the simple fact that her music has transcended electronica's gender bias by merit of its sheer beauty and richness. Maslen's tightly woven warp and woof fits atmospheric detail into every available space, intuitively filling the holes between beats with compelling sounds. To listen in is to be absorbed; to concentrate is to fall weightlessly through her music's center. The luscious textures of "La Centinela," a mandala of sampled colors and geometric breakbeats, ripple and tease like mosaic inlay in a swimming pool. "CCTV" is a wind-borne kaleidoscope of falling leaves and heavy raindrops. Unseen dub currents stir the rhythms and ghost-horns of "Weeds," just as strange forces pluck at the strands of "Nincompoop" and "Beautiful Pool," sending shivers through hip-hop weaves. 15 LEVELS OF MAGNIFICATION is music in which to lose your senses. Hanx [PA]
The main problem with the inspired amateur mantra of punk rock is that it usually translates into aggressively energetic studio works, but ultimately sloppy and forgettable live shows. HANX, however is a welcome and vibrant exception to this rule. Showcasing Stiff Little Fingers at several live shows in London in July 1980, HANX (the abbreviated Irish way of responding to applause) demonstrates that SLF were just as accomplished a live band as a studio outfit. If lead singer/guitarist Jake Burns seemed filled with righteous indignation onthe studio versions of "Suspect Device" and "Tin Soldiers," live he comes across as a prophet of rage scourging the forces of oppression with the whip of his voice. However, this doesn't mean that he can't croon like a teen idol on "Barbed Wire Love" or do a credible reggae voice on the cover of Bob Marley's "Johnny Was." Killer live versions of the call-to-arms "Alternative Ulster" and the bittersweet "Wasted Life" make this an instant classic. Although the album only contains material from the band's first two albums, HANX is essential enough to merit attention from fans both old and new. SKU: 1078221

Thembi
Personnel includes: Pharoah Sanders (tenor & soprano saxophones, alto flute, fife, bailophone, brass bell, bells, maracas, cow horn, percussion); Michael White (violin, percussion); Lonnie Liston Smith (bailophone, piano, electric piano, claves, ring cymbals, percussion, background vocals); Cecil McBee (bass, finger cymbals, percussion, sound effects); Clifford Jarvis (drums, maracas, bells, percussion); Roy Haynes (drums); Chief Bey, Majid Shabazz, Anthony Wiles, Nat Bettis (percussion); James Jordon (ring cymbals). Producers: Ed Michel, Bill Szymczyk. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California on November 25, 1970 and The Record Plant, New York City on January 12, 1971. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson at MCA Music Media Studios. This is part of Impulse's The New Thing series. Brimming with innovation, positivity and a pervasive sense of wonder, THEMBI may become your favorite Sanders album. These tracks represent a landmark confluence of many elements: Avant-Garde chaos, static harmony and a cultural revaluation of West African instrumentation, to name a few. Omnipresent, of course, is the unmistakable tempest of Pharoah blowing his tenor out to sea. It's 1971, and this is a simultaneous celebration of the past and future of jazz set to the jingling bells of a Sunday afternoon be-in. THEMBI floats to a start with the ethereal Fender Rhodes musing of"Astral Traveling," courtesy of Lonnie Liston Smith. Though Sanders has described the melody as an impromptu thread for the changes, his plaintive long tones are as charged as ever with wisdom. In the lower register is Cecil McBee, laying down the groove with entrancing vamp lines. The title track seems like an afterthought to the classic "The Creator," replacing the traditional "head, solo, head" structure with something more closely resembling "mantra, solo, mantra." Like much of Sanders' other work, these recordings are simple in form, yet vast in content. REVEIWS: Rolling Stone (9/2/71, pp.43) - "...the best album in a long while from the man who can legitimately claim to have 'greened' jazz almost singlehandedly, not with merchandising techniques but with music alone..." Quote Unquote (Interviews)
The Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr. Recorded between March & July 1964. Includes liner notes by Michael Heatley. This is an interview disc. The Beatles' impact on popular music is inestimable. They changed the face of rock & roll, introducing new concepts and techniques again and again throughout their career, influencing both their contemporaries and the next several generations of rock & roll. In the early '60s, when the golden age of Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis had given way to prefabricated teen idols and bland, diluted versions of real rock & roll and R&B, the Beatles' brash, effervescent blend of '50s vintage sounds and bold, electric pop saved the world. Not content with reviving rock & roll almost single-handedly, the Beatles continued to innovate. Borrowing a bit from John Lennon's hero Bob Dylan, they pioneered the progression from generic love songs to more personalized, introspective subjectmatter. Let loose in the studio, they were among the first in the pop world to use backwards tapes, feedback and exotic instrumentation (George Harrison's well-documented love affair with Indian music inspired a thousand sitar-infested pop tunes). Lennon & McCartney (and occasionally Harrison) were phenomenally gifted tunesmiths who merged a pre-rock harmonic vocabulary with R&B influences and a visionary streak to create a timeless body of work. Sakura
Susumu Yokota has chosen an unusual path that revisits, contemplates, and deconstructs his own past. SAKURA completes the trilogy that began with Yokota's incipient IMAGE and reconciliatory MAGIC THREAD, bringing the re-enlightened artist to a new level of consciousness and musical mastery. SAKURA opens with the elegant, Eno/Lanois-like melodic movements of "Saku," "Hagoromo," and "Tobiume," but gradually reveals Yokota's grander designs. SAKURA marries the softly thrumming electronic/acoustic weave of IMAGE with MAGIC THREAD's probing pulses and unraveled rhythms, realigning the elements of Yokota's dance-floor craft. But Yokota doesn't simply add beats; he unfolds the geometry of his music, preparing it to receive rhythm. "Gekkoh" and "Hisen" tenderly reassemble Yokota's exquisite musical matrices around these complementary beat-and-pulse patterns. Yet SAKURA is imperfect--body and soul without spirit--until "Kodomotachi"re-absorbs IMAGE's stray vocal ghosts into the music's reunified structures. At SAKURA's climax, Yokota celebrates the rebirth of his music, and art and artist rejoice in a new completeness. The exultant jazz of "Naminote" and the reflective benedictions of "Shinsen" and "Kirakiraboshi" end Yokota's brilliant cycle of introspection and transfiguration on a soaring spiritual high. 0898 Beautiful South
Recorded at Air Studios, London, England. Despite being one of England's most successful bands, it wasn't until0898, their third album, that the Beautiful South found an audience in the US. This success (though by no means huge) might be explained by the fact that the band adopted a slightly more muscular sound on the album. Where in the past they had used deceptively sweet, even sentimental, musical backing, here there are slashing guitars and gruesomely bubbling bass lines to toughen the sound. Fans can rest easy, though, the band's unbelievable cruel and bitter lyrics remain in full force--for proof, look no further than "Something That You Said," which begins "The perfect love song/ it has no words/ it only has death threats." Standouts include "We Are Each Other," a peppy but claustrophobic love song propelled by a meaty bass line, "36D," an ambiguous tract on prostitution which starts on a quiet but vicious note before exploding into a snarling rocker during the choruses, and "Here It Is Again," another in the band's series of screeds on horrific-sounding relationships, which here is presented with a roiling cauldron of guitars, military drums, and booming piano. Tru Dawgs [PA]
Personnel includes: C-Murder, Snoop Dogg, Master P, Da Brat, Keith Murray, Soulja Slim, Silkk The Shocker, Bizzy Bone, Mia X, Mac, T-Bo, XL, Chan, Storm, The Cutt Throat Committee, Krazy, Bass Heavy, Wayne-Go, CurrenSy The Hot Spitter, Tre-Nitty, Keala, Junie Bezel, JD. Producers include: Danny Cartel, XL, Bass Heavy, Ezell Swang, L.T. Hilton. C-Murder's follow-up to 2001's C-P-3.COM is likely to be overshadowed by his arrest for, uh, murder, following a warrant being issued for his arrest for a separate, um, attempted murder. Which is presumably why he's not called C-Mail Fraud. With its featured roster of guest appearances by such luminaries asSnoop Dogg, Murder's brothers Master P and Silkk the Shocker, and Jermaine Dupri, TRU DAWGS is not so much a C-Murder album as a gesture of solidarity from the beleaguered rapper's true believers, and as such it's not half bad. "Dogged Her Out" features a useful herky-jerky rhythm and insistent chorus, while "Ain't No Pimpin'" plumbs Chic retro territory underpinning its tried and tested subject matter, and the title track counts off Murder's dawgs in a call to arms. Whether TRU DAWGS has a follow-up is a matter for the Louisiana court system, but either way presumably C-Murder won't be hurting for material for a while to come. SKU: 1085902
