Infected [Remastered]
The The includes: Matt Johnson (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Anna Domino (vocals); Judd Lander (harmonica); Jaime Talbot, Bob Mintzer (saxophone); Andy Blake (baritone saxophone); John Edcott, Dave Fries, John Thirkell (trumpet); Ahsley Slater, Steve Aitken (trombone); Philip Eastop (French horn); Steve Hogarth (piano); Warne Livesey (organ); Dave Clayton (synthesizer); Jeff Cline (acoustic bass); Steve Brown (electric bass); David Palmer (drums); Roli Mosimann (percussion, programming); Louis Jardine, Bashiri Johnson (percussion); The Croquets (background vocals). Additional personnel: Neneh Cherry (vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. 1986's INFECTED, the second official The The album, is the sound of main-man Matt Johnson really coming into his own. The record is a combination of the full-on flowering of Johnson's claustrophobic, paranoid loathing, a beat you can dance to, and lyrics that, while disturbing, are never delivered solely for sheer shock value. Collectors should note that a 1987 compilation of eight videos, one for each album track, contains slightly different versions of the songs. While metal scrapes in the background and a guitar skitters, the narrator of "Out of the Blue (Into the Fire)"attempts to reinforce his own self-worth by engaging in sex with a prostitute. "Sweet Bird of Truth," set to a thudding beat and jittering saxophone, chronicles the last moments of a military transport plane before it crashes. "Slow Train to Dawn" examines a relationship between a man and woman (a duet with Neneh Cherry), who, though unable to communicate, talk endlessly, while a horn section blares the night away. Also of note are the punchy album opener, "Infected," and "Twilight of a Champion," both of which suggest a more commercially conscious version of Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel, while setting their own, subversive course. Tommy (Deluxe Edition) [SACD]
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Entwistle (vocals, trumpet, French horn, Flugelhorn, bass); Keith Moon (vocals, drums, tympani, gong, tambourine); Roger Daltrey (vocals). Recorded at IBC Studio, London, England. Originally released as a 2-LP set on Decca (7205). Includes liner notes by Matt Kent. The definitive rock opera, TOMMY liberated the Who from a "singles band" stigma, marking them as a substantial artistic force. ComposerPete Townshend had flirted with the conceptual format on two previous releases, but here his vision is spread over two ambitious records that play to the Who's main strengths. Anthems such as the raucous "Pinball Wizard" and the surprisingly serene "I'm Free" emphasize the kinetic power of the band, while Townshend's cast of characters (the perverted Uncle Ernie, the inscrutable Tommy) reveals a wild and unconventional imagination. Townshend even incorporates Sonny Boy Williamson's "Eyesight to the Blind" as part of his fable about the "deaf, dumb, and blind kid," making a successful reference to the past in what is an undeniably groundbreaking and forward-looking achievement. Future Days
Can: Damo Suzuki (vocals); Michael Karoli (guitar); Irmin Schmidt (keyboards); Holger Czukay (bass); Jaki Liebezeit (drums). On Future Days Can fully explored the ambient direction they had introduced into their sound on theprevious year's Ege Bamyasi, and in the process created a landmark in European electronic music. Apart from the delightfully concise single 'Moonshake', the album is comprised of just three long atmospheric pieces of music. The opening title track and 'Spray' build around the eerie vocals of Damo Suzuki as they weave in and out of the shimmering instrumental tracks. The closing 'Bel Air' is a gloriously expansive piece of music that progresses almost imperceptibly, before a sudden shock-ending after exactly 20 minutes. SKU: 1083690

Aretha In Paris
Personnel: Aretha Franklin (vocals, piano); Jerry Weaver (guitar); Miller Brisker, Donald "Buck" Waldon (tenor saxophone); David Squire (baritone saxophone); Donald Townes, Russell Conway, Ron Jackson, Little John Wilson (trumpet); Rene Pitts (trombone); Gary Illingworth (piano); Rodderick Hicks (bass); George Davidson (drums); Carolyn Franklin, Wyline Ivey, Charnessa Jones (background vocals). Recorded live at the Olympia Theatre, Paris, France on May 7, 1968. Originally released on Atlantic (8207). Includes liner notes by David Nathan. When Aretha Franklin overcame her fear of flying long enough to swing through Europe for a two-week tour, ARETHA IN PARIS was the brilliant by-product. This exquisite slice of Lady Soul's spectacular presence in a live setting came at a time when she was making her mark as the Queen Of Soul. Backed by a full orchestra and a trio of vocalists that included sister Carolyn, Franklin played a set consisting of material that was barely a year old. On Willie Nelson's "Night Life," the legendary singercan be heard preaching her sorrow to the crowd (she had temporarily separated with husband Ted White that night). Regardless of any pain she may have been going through that night, Franklin's energy never flags as she rips into energetic versions of Ray Charles' "Come Back Baby" and Otis Redding's "Respect." Most impressive are renditions of her own soul classics such as "Dr. Feelgood (Love Is A Serious Business)" and "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)," both which benefit from slow build-ups and spine-tingling finales. WASP
Also available in a 3-pack with THE LAST COMMAND and THE HEADLESS CHILDREN. W.A.S.P: Blackie Lawless (vocals, bass); Randy Piper (vocals, guitar); Tony Richards (vocals, drums); Chris Holmes (guitar). Includes liner notes by Dante Bonutto and Blackie Lawless. All tracks have been digitally remastered. By 1984, Kiss had been unmasked for a year and Alice Cooper was onhiatus. But L.A. bands like W.A.S.P. (which stood for "We Are Sexual Perverts") were picking up the theatrical, shock-metal slack quite nicely. The band would wear eerie make-up, tight leather, and knee-high boots, while wielding a variety of outlandish props. Musically, W.A.S.P. specialized in mega-decibel heavy metal, as evidenced by the group's gold-certified self-titled debut. W.A.S.P. contains two of the band's most popular tracks (the scream-along anthems "I Wanna Be Somebody" and "L.O.V.E. Machine)" and many other compositions that fans of '80s metal will find gratifying. Highlights include the rockers "The Flame," "School Daze," "Hellion," "On Your Knees," and "The Torture Never Stops," plus the ballad (by W.A.S.P. standards, anyway) "Sleeping In the Fire." Concord Jazz Heritage Series
Personnel: Art Blakey (drums); Branford Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Bobby Watson (alto saxophone); Bill Pierce, Jean Toussaint (tenor saxophone); Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Donald Brown, Mulgrew Miller, James Williams (piano); Charles Fambrough, Lonnie Plaxico (bass). Producer: Frank Dorittie. Compilation producer: Nick Phillips. Recorded live between May 1978 and April 1985. This is part of Concord Jazz's Concord Jazz Heritage series. Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers had a second coming in the early- and mid-'80s with lineups that featured either Wynton and Branford Marsalis or Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison. This collection features selections from live performances by both groups at variouspoints in their tenures. It is of special interest to note that most of the cuts were recorded at San Francisco's famed Keystone Korner, a particularly special venue for Blakey in his later career. Both bands rival the Messengers' heyday 20-odd years earlier. Blakey, by then an elder statesman and legend of the jazz world, is as forceful and musically demanding as ever, driving his young charges with the vigor of a man half his age. This is a lovingly assembled collection of a band that kept on mining young talent to the end, and a testament to Blakey's aura as jazz's greatest father figure. SKU: 5058087

West Side Story [Remastered]
Mini disc available on Columbia (32603). NOTES: Music composed by Leonard Bernstein. Lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim. Principal cast: Carol Lawrence (Maria); Larry Kert (Tony); Chita Rivera (Anita); Mickey Calin (Riff); Ken Le Roy (Bernardo). Original cast recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on September 29, 1957. Includes liner notes by Martin Charnin and Nicholas Deutsch. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Columbia Records' Columbia Broadway Masterworks series. Record buyers who had not seen the show that opened on Broadway in 1957, could hardly believe their ears when this dramatic, early stereo albumreached the stores soon afterwards. Classical composer Leonard Bernstein and newcomer Stephen Sondheim's spellbinding score combined exquisite ballads such as "Maria" and "Tonight" with streetwise numbers such as "Gee, Officer Krupke" and the exhilarating "America." Carol Lawrence, Larry Kert and Chita Rivera led the superb young cast, and the album stayed for 120 weeks in the US chart but faired poorly on its UK release. In 1991 it was inducted into the NARAS Hall of Fame. SKU: 1014310

Swim Team Vol.1
Swim's compilation of underground eclecticism is an array of lo-fi guitar-based indie, trip-hop, ambient, and house music from Germany and the UK. Beginning with Malka Spigel's "Tall Grey Buildings," the feeling is immediately one of introspection and brooding contemplation. "Tall Grey Buildings" is followed by Silo's "Templates," which continues in the same vein, recalling the likes of Unrest and My Bloody Valentine. Next up is Dol-Lop's beautifully chilled trip-hop tune "Phase," evoking Aphex Twin, and then the guitar-sampling, New Order-evoking intensity of Ronnie & Clyde's "Mikki Maus," a punchy riff with wonderfully disconcerting wailing over the top. Some soothing ambience courtesy of Lobe, Symptoms and Newman/Izzo leads on to the distorted violin breaks of Steve Gears' "1st Person." Bumpy's "Pizza" ups the tempo with a house track which sounds like Underworld sans vocals (high praise indeed), and Underworld is again recalled by LOGM's "Constellation," an electronically tweaked voice set to a breakbeat frame. Immersion's two tracks consist of top-notch swirling ambience, rounding the album off on a more chic note. This is an intriguing insightinto a label with a future as bright as its tone is overcast--a teaser which will leave you craving more. SKU: 6431149

Songbooks, The (The Silver Collection)
Verve's SILVER COLLECTION was the company's first reissue series, begun in the mid-'80s just as CDs were coming on the market. While the series was quickly superseded by other, more thorough and lavishly packaged reissues, this 19-track, 64-minute collection, focusing on Ella Fitzgerald's orchestral work from the mid-'50s, is still an outstanding compilation. Opening with her trademark "Oh, Lady Be Good" and continuing onthrough standards like George and Ira Gershwin's "Nice Work if You Can Get It" and Johnny Mercer's "Laura," the song selection holds few surprises. However, the performances and material are so uniformly excellent--this rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is the benchmark against which all others must be measured--that the familiarity makes the album feel like an old friend. A magnificent introduction for novices and a fine sampler for fans. SKU: 1001233

eMOTIVe (Parental Advisory) [PA]
A Perfect Circle: Billy Howerdel (vocals, guitar, harmonium); Maynard James Keenan (vocals); Danny Lohner (guitar, bass guitar); James Iha (guitar, programming); Paz Lenchantin (piano); Jeordie White (bass guitar); Josh Freese (drums). Recording information: 2004. For EMOTIVE,their third full-length album, A Perfect Circle offers up a covers-heavy collection that includes a number of protest songs. What's most striking about this set is the way in which the group reworks pop classics. In the hands of frontman Maynard James Keenan and company, John Lennon's "Imagine" becomes a foreboding lament, and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is transformed into an oddly soothing, nearly ambient song. Other standout tracks include a lullaby-like, electronics-laced take on Depeche Mode's "People Are People" and a gently melodic version of "When the Levee Breaks" (almost totally unrecognizable from Led Zeppelin's revered rendition). EMOTIVE also presents two APC originals--the frustration-venting "Passive" and the scathing "Counting Bodies like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums." Although a few tracks feature amped-up arrangements, it's remarkable how many of these tunes are subdued and understated, further backing up A Perfect Circle's status as a dynamic, unpredictable band. Expoobident
Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone); Wynton Kelly, Eddie Higgins (piano); Paul Chambers, Art Davis (bass); Art Blakey (drums). Recorded in New York, New York on February 2, 1960 and in Chicago, Illinois on October 13, 1960.Includes liner notes by Brian Priestley. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This release compiles two sessions from 1960. Lee Morgan was with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers at the time and had, at a mere 21 years of age, worked and/or recorded with nearly everybody on these sessions at one point or another. The February release, recorded in New York City, hits the ground running with a pair of Morgan compositions, "Terrible 'T'" and "Mogie," foreshadowing the writing on his mid-'60s Blue Note recordings. Wayne Shorter, Milt Jackson, Clifford Jordan, and Eddie Higgins all make writing contributions here. Jordan's two pieces, "The Hearing" and "Lost and Found," close out the second date. The tight arrangements are played with confidence and aplomb, Morgan has plenty of room to show what he can do, and Blakey is a crackling, propulsive presence from the outset. SKU: 1086061

Double Vision [Remastered]
Foreigner: Lou Gramm (vocals); Ian McDonald (guitar, reeds, keyboards); Mick Jones (guitar, piano); Al Greenwood (keyboards, synthesizer); Ed Gagliardi (bass); Dennis Elliott (drums). Additional personnel: Ian Lloyd (background vocals). Producers: Keith Olsen, Mick Jones, Ian McDonald. Includes liner notes by Jery McCulley. All tracks have been digitally remastered. While the U.S. was being swept up by disco mania in 1978, Foreigner issued another hard rock tour de force, DOUBLE VISION. Itwas unthinkable that the sextet could outdo its solid 1977 self-titled debut, but it somehow did. Lou Gramm and company issued another set of rock radio staples and rock-steady album tracks, the best-known being such perennial arena rockers as "Hot Blooded" and the title track. But the highpoints didn't just stop there--such oft-overlooked compositions as "Blue Morning, Blue Day," "Lonely Children," and "I Have Waited So Long" are just as strong. DOUBLE VISION solidified Foreigner's standing as a '70s rock sensation. SKU: 1075094

Down With The King [Remastered]
Run-DMC: Joseph "DJ Run" Simmons, Darrell "DMC" McDaniels (rap vocals); "Jam Master Jay" Mizell (scratches). Additional personnel: Tom Morello (guitar); Daniel Shulman (bass). Producers include: Q-Tip, Run-DMC, Pete Rock, EPMD (Parrish Smith, Erick Sermon). Engineers include: Bob Power, Dave Greenberg, Angela Piva. After almost 10 years as hip-hop's reigning kings, RUN-DMC reached out in 1992 to other producers and beat makers for the trio's DOWN WITH THE KING album. Pete Rock, remixer and DJ extraordinaire, even makes a vocal appearance on the title track. The newer sound of Pete Rock's beats and the classic rhyme styles of Run and D.M.C made for a fabulous combination. Also behind the boards for DOWN WITH THE KING was the Bomb Squad (Public Enemy), who produced two killer tracks, "3 in the Head" and "Ooh, Whatcha Gonna Do." Some ofthe other outstanding tracks include "Come on Everybody," "Hit 'em Hard," and "Can I Get It Yo." DOWN WITH THE KING might not contain as many classic songs as other RUN-DMC albums, but it fully demonstrates the group's impressive longevity and creativity. SKU: 1087169

Warming Up To The Ice Age
Recorded during a turbulent period in the singer/songwriter's life--many of the songs on Hiatt's next two albums, BRING THEFAMILY and SLOW TURNING, concern the blurry alcoholic haze under which this album was created--1985's WARMING UP TO THE ICE AGE is widely considered an inappropriately-produced mess by Hiatt's fans, and, one suspects, by the man himself. However, like the album it most closely resembles, the previous year's GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD by Elvis Costello and the Attractions, WARMING UP is much more interesting than its reputation suggests. Yes, the Def Leppard touches on the opening "The Usual" are somewhat painful. But a countryish duet with Costello, "Living a Little, Laughing a Little," is among Hiatt's best vocal performances ever, and there are at least half a dozen excellent songs here, particularly the rueful "She Said the Same Things to Me." Stone Roses, The
The Stone Roses: Ian Brown (vocals); John Squire (guitar); Gary Mounfield (bass); Reni (drums, background vocals). Producers: John Leckie, Peter Hook, Paul Schroeder, Garage Flowers. Manchester's most likely to, who escaped independent status after a lengthy court battle, signed to Geffen and then promptly disappeared for five years. They came back, and then went pop. Quite simply, their debut album is a superlative record. A Byrds-like listlessness caused listeners to swoon in wonder and slip quietly beneath the surface. 'Waterfall' and 'She Bangs The Drums' were sublime and quietly brilliant, 'I Wanna Be Adored' teased with its epic intro, and, ofcourse, created incredible and impossible pressure for that all-important second album. A classic album, already seen as one of the finest records of the '80s. SKU: 1001313

Life Is Killing Me [PA]
Type O Negative: Peter Steele (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Josh Silver (keyboards, background vocals); Kenny Hickey (guitar, background vocals); Johnny Kelly (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Paul Bento (guitar, sitar, tambura); Pandit Kinnar K. Seen (tabla). Recorded at Systems Two, Brooklyn, New York. From the first, sludgy notes of the opening cut "Thir13teen," there's never a doubt that Type O Negative has kept the spirit of vintage Black Sabbath alive with their sixth album LIFE IS KILLING ME, even as Ozzy's been reduced to screaming televised profanities at his kids on MTV. Type O frontman Peter Steele continues to surprise and impress by taking the Sabbath influence and peppering it with various stylistic twists that find him turning a potentially stultifying genre like goth-metal inside out. Guests Paul Bento and Pandit Kinnar K. Seen contribute sitar and tabla respectively to the muscular "Less Than Zero," while Type O keyboardist Josh Silver injects the moody "(We Were) Electrocute" with the kind of synth lines that'll put smiles on nostalgic '80 goth fans everywhere. Any fears that this quartet of native New Yorkers has gone soft get dismissed amid the roiling riffageof the lumbering title cut, the Danzig-like "Nettie," and the equally despairing "Anesthesia." Going on their 14th year together, Type O Negative continues to blaze their own singular path in the worlds of heavy metal and hard rock. SKU: 1084296

Frankenchrist
The Dead Kennedys: Klaus Flouride (vocals, bass); D.H. Peligro (vocals, drums); Jello Biafra (vocals); East Bay Ray (guitar, 12-string electric Bellzouki, synthesizer). Recorded at Hyde Street Studios, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Jello Biafra. Digitally remastered by John Cuniberti and East Bay Ray (The Plant Mastering, Sausalito, California). FRANKENCHRIST is the Dead Kennedys album that garnered them the most publicattention, albeit for reasons the band would ultimately regret. California prosecutors, clearly no fans of politically charged punk rock, declared an H.R. Giger poster the Kennedys included with the album's original pressing obscene. The result was a protracted two-year legal fight. The band ultimately won it, but the effort exhausted them and led to their ultimate breakup. Nevertheless, the music remains. It's still primo punk, and as relevant as ever, thanks to lead singer Jello Biafra's stinging lyrical swipes at the powers that be, and the gloriously metallic clang of East Bay Ray's guitar. Classic stuff. SKU: 1056355
