Fresh Cream [Remastered]
Cream:Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Jack Bruce (vocals, 6-string bass, harmonica); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums). Recorded at Chalk Farm Studios and Mayfair Studios, London, England. From the acappella intro on "I Feel Free" to the tumultuous rhythmic underpinnings of "N.S.U.," Cream's debut album FRESH CREAM was a pronouncement that drums and bass would no longer be limited to the role of background instruments, that rock guitarists would henceforth be judged by the standard of Eric Clapton's soaring, lyric signature, and that emotional/instrumental content is as important as the singer and song. To appreciate the energetic slant Cream put on traditional blues, check out their manic, up-tempo version of Muddy Waters' "Rollin' And Tumblin'." And where many bands routinely ripped off folk and blues artists, Cream made sure people like Robert Johnson ("Four Until Late"), Willie Dixon ("Spoonful"), and Skip James ("I'm So Glad") got both credit and royalties, while expanding the audience for pure blues music. Greatest Hits Vol.2
Initial pressings of GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2 contained a bonus CD. Personnel: Alan Jackson (vocals, guitar); Jimmy Buffett (vocals); Bruce Watkins, Greenwood Hart (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, Lloyd Green (steel guitar); Stuart Duncan (mandolin, fiddle); Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano); Glenn Worf (electric bass); Eddie Bayers (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); John Wesley Ryles (background vocals). Recorded at Emerald Entertainment's Tracking Room, The Sound Station, East Iris, Nashville, Tennessee; Shrimpboat Sound, Key West, Florida; McClear Digital, Toronto, Canada. Anyone who earns a second volume of GREATEST HITS has obviously learned a thing or two about staying power and consistency of artistic vision. Such is the case with Alan Jackson, who appeared in the 1990s as mainstream country's alternative to the dominance of King Garth. His sound was still eminently accessible, but the faux-Springsteen drama of Kiss fan Garth's rock manque was eschewed for a more roots-oriented (though hardly traditionalist) sound. Things kick off nicely with the Cajun-flavored smash "Little Bitty," then giving way to the introspective, fiddle-laced country ballad "Everything I Love." Along the way, there's the pleasantly chugging, upbeat "It Must Be Love," the much-publicized post-9/11 song "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)," thankfully absent of Toby Keith's contemporaneous jingoisticrancor, and the Jimmy Buffett-assisted party anthem "It's Five O' Clock Somewhere." Add a couple of unreleased tracks and a bonus disc of more obscure material, and you've got as good an introduction to Jackson's work as his first GREATEST HITS COLLECTION. SKU: 6588225

Day At The Races, A (Limited Edition)
Queen: Brian May (vocals, guitar); Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano); Roger Taylor (vocals, percussion); John Deacon (bass). Recorded in England between July and November 1976. A DAY AT THE RACES appeared almost exactly one year later after 1975's hugely successful A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, proving to be a more-than-deserving follow-up and nearly duplicating its predecessor's success. Queen was now a master of the recording studio, utilizing every piece of technology to its fullest, which helped push such demanding tracks as "Somebody to Love" over the top. But Queen certainly wasn't just about studio tricks; the band had the strong tunes to back up its rich sound. In addition to aforementioned gospel-tinged hit "Somebody to Love," the album features many other strong tracks--a politically-charged song about the plight of the American Indian ("White Man"), several touching love songs ("Teo Torriate," "You and I," "You Take My Breath Away"), and old-timey tunes ("The Millionaire Waltz"). Freddy Mercury and the boys also include a healthy dose of their trademark Queenly rock on "Tie Your Mother Down" and break out some excellent pop ditties in the form of "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" and"Long Away." Have You Fed The Fish
Badly Drawn Boy: Damon Gough. HAVE YOU FED THE FISH? opens with the most subtle of skits before launching into the title track, a 70s-style power ballad out of the Stephen Bishop songbook. The title track fades into crunchy, imploring angry indie rock in the Modest Mouse tradition ("40 Days, 40 Fights") which shifts into a swirling disco-era dance number ("All Possibilities") then disintegrates into an earnest epic, lyrically Dylan-esque love song suite ("I Was Wrong/You Were Right"). Incorporating something like seven verses, a whistled interlude, a synth solo and a couple kitchen sinks. And that's Damon Gough (aka. Badly Drawn Boy) in a nutshell; he could be called Beck without the gimmicks, bells and whistles, but more aptly should be referred to as his ultimate own man. HAVE YOU FED THE FISH?, the prolificBDB's second record of 2002, displays the linguistic mastery of a Swiftian wordsmith, someone who loves to toy with the language while understanding the value of restraint in a well-turned phrase, a wit which can exhibit the sharpest irony but also possesses the guts to write a song as breathtakingly sincere as the aforementioned "You Were Wrong/I Was Right," a song as beautiful and as achingingly clumsy as is the truest of love. Perfect Night
Personnel: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Fernando Saunders (vocals, bass); Tony "Thunder" Smith (vocals, drums); Mike Rathke (guitar). Recorded liveat the Meltdown Festival at Royal Festival Hall, London, England on July 3, 1997. Includes liner notes by Lou Reed. You might consider releasing a fourth live album to be a questionable career move, even for an artist of Lou Reed's stature. However, PERFECT NIGHT comes at an opportune time for Uncle Lou, following the triumph of latter-day Reed classics like NEW YORK and SET THE TWILIGHT REELING (both of which are represented here) and coinciding with a PBS documentary on Reed and the reissue of one of his finest '70s albums, BERLIN (acknowledged by a reading of "The Kids"). By the late '90s, Reed had settled comfortably into his iconic status, while still enjoying the effects of the artistic rejuvenation that began for him around the time of BLUE MASK and continued through the next decade-and-a-half. In stark contrast to the glam-rock excesses of previous live recordings like ROCK & ROLL ANIMAL, PERFECT NIGHT is so spare that the quartet recordings almost sound like solo performances. The focus here is on Reed's lyrics, which are delivered with a rather uncharacteristic determination. This slice of live Lou is no cheesy repackaging of greatest hits, it's a valid addition to Reed's catalog. SKU: 4111468

Ready To Die
Personnel includes: The Notorious B.I.G., Method Man, Total, Diana King (vocals); Sybil Pennix (spoken vocals); Carl "Chucky" Thompson (various instruments). Producers include: Sean "Puffy" Combs, Darnell Scott, Easy Mo Bee, Norman & Digga Bluez Brothers, Carl "Chucky" Thompson. Engineers include: Bassy Bob Brockmann, Greg Pinto, Rich Travali. Recorded at The Hit Factory, Soundtracks Recording Studio, Sound On Sound Recordings, Inc., Chung King House Of Metal and D&D Recording Studio, New York, New York. "Big Poppa" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Once he stepped out onto the scene as the rapper on the remix of Mary J. Blige's hit single "Real Love," many hip-hop fanaticsanxiously awaited the debut of The Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls. Their prayers were answered with READY TO DIE, fifteen tracks of uncut, hard-core, lyrically sophisticated rap all complemented by hypnotic beats supplied by the underground's most prominent producers. READY TO DIE resumes where his "Juicy" single left off, but separates itself from the array of hip-hop albums that don't live up to the initial hit. Blowin' up the charts using his knowledge of the streets and hard bangin' snares provided by producer Easy Mo Bee, the Bedford-Stuyvesant native Notorious B.I.G. is far from "Ready To Die." Not since the likes of Slick Rick has there been an artist so successful in the storytelling genre of rap music, creating a mental picture of life in the heads of his listeners. The up-tempo "Gimme The Loot" illustrates the hustlin' ways of a trigger-happy robbery expert stressed from the "Everyday Struggle" of life. The recurrence of the Isley Brothers tune "Between The Sheets" adds to the charm of "Big Poppa," where Biggie portrays his "player" image. No need to skip any songs, READY TO DIE is packed with hits all the way through. SKU: 1002210

Let Me Clear My Throat [PA]
Personnel: DJ Kool, Biz Markie, Doug E. Fresh. Producers: DJ Kool, Stephen James, Fred Derby. Recorded live at Club Gothum, Bahama Bay, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Hammerjack's, Baltimore, Maryland; Ivory's, Richmond, Virginia. Originally released on CLR Records (7209). DJ Kool is a clear inheritor of Washington, D.C.'s go-go music spirit. His debut album is stocked wall-to-wall with live performances of polyrhythmic, percussion-strapped grooves and call-and-response vocals aimed at inciting dance-floor nirvanas. The music is all about rump-shaking; consequently, Kool rules the roost by being an old-fashioned MC, a master of celebratory ceremonies intent on moving the crowd, rather than a preacher or storyteller. Although go-go's popularity has been in decline while hip-hop has risen as the urban music ofchoice, D.C.-born Kool seems intent on accentuating the similarities between the two genres, and on getting folks interested once more. Go-go, a beat-heavy style of R&B played by large bands feeding on improvisatory grooves, resembles the old-school hip-hop style of a vocalist rapping over beats. Kool has replaced the band with a DJ, but the form remains. And when Kool reprises the hit title song with master MCs Biz Markie and Doug E. Fresh in the house, that connection seems even stronger. This is post-G hip-hop on a rather unique party-rockin' journey. SKU: 1073930

God's Favorite [PA]
Personnel includes: N.O.R.E., Capone, Cam'Ron, Fat Joe, Cassidy, Chinky, Mualiny, Final Chapter, Complexions, Mashonda, Gold, Ja Rule, Akinyele, Kia DWNLZY (rap vocals);Kelis (vocals); Nas, Ice T, Nelly, Tyson Beckford (spoken vocals); Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo (various instruments); SPK (keyboards, bass). Producers include: Kyze, The Neptunes, Swizz Beatz, EZ Elpee, Irv Gotti. It's interesting that Victor (N.O.R.E.) Santiago commences this bangin' collection of thug rap with an apology for his last effort. He was unfocused, understandably, with the loss to jail time of his partner in the erstwhile Capone-n-Noreagea duo Kiam "Capone" Holley. But he rapidly shows he's going to set matters to rights with a swift one-two punch to gangsta rapper pretenders in "Nothin'," and a freewheeling track called "Grimey" that's one of the most commercial cuts on offer here. GOD'S FAVORITE finds N.O.R.E. back on top of his game in a wide-ranging set that encompasses hard-core gangsta rap and a lift from Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time." The album is prefaced by a collection of skit phone calls from Santiago's peers including Nelly, Ice T, and Nas, all paying their respects to this lifer's return to form in the street-life stakes. He shows their respect is justified again and again on cuts such as "Mr. CEO," a skewering of big money in the music biz, and "Live My Life" which features an appearance from the inimitably throaty Ja Rule. But ultimately it's in the regretful, angry "Black Clouds" that we get a true glimpse into the rapper's tortured soul. SKU: 1074334

Bryter Layter
Personnel: Nick Drake (vocals, guitar); Richard Thompson (guitar); John Cale (viola, piano, celeste, harpsichord, organ); Ray Warleigh (flute, alto saxophone); Lyn Dobson (flute); Paul Harris, Chris McGregor (piano); Dave Pegg, Ed Carter (bass); Mike Kowalski, Dave Mattacks (drums); Pat Arnold, Doris Troy (background vocals). Bryter Layter is the late Drake's most fully realized album, a beautifully melancholic and moving collection of songs featuring elegantly understated backing from the likes of Richard Thompson and John Cale. Although at times a deeply disturbing record, particularly on 'Hazey Jane II' and 'Fly', the album evokes an air of wistful calm with three delicate instrumentals framing the wry wit of 'Poor Boy', the studied isolation of 'At The Chime Of A City Clock' and the aching beauty of the matchless 'Northern Sky'. Almost thirty years after it was first released, Bryter Layter remains one of the most beautiful records ever made. SKU: 1002247

Shaker
Personnel includes: David Johansen (vocals, harmonica); Larry Saltzman (guitar, dobro); Brian Koonin (guitar, mandolin); Kermit Driscoll (bass); Keith Carlock (drums, percussion). Recorded at St. Peter's Church, New York, New York in November 2001. Includes liner notes by William Gay. The second album by David Johansen and the Harry Smiths, 2002's SHAKER continues in the country blues tradition of their self-titled 2000 debut; in fact, it's practically a carbon copy. Given that DAVID JOHANSEN AND THE HARRY SMITHS was arguably Johansen's best record since his New York Dolls days, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Although the group was inspired by Harry Smith's ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC, the overall effect is much closer to Bob Dylan's two early- '90s albums GOOD AS I BEEN TO YOU and WORLD GONE WRONG. That is, Johansen isn't going for a strict recreation of the originals (by Son House, Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Charley Patton, and others--the one ringer is Gillian Welch's "My Morphine," whichfits perfectly with the others), nor is he trying to "update" or otherwise mess with what made these songs special to begin with. Johansen's voice has grown even more hoarse and smoky than it was in the '70s, and his raspy growl fits blues standards like "Death Letter" and Mississippi John Hurt's "Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me" like he was born to sing them. The four-man Harry Smiths, in their one sop to contemporary musical tastes, include a drummer, but Keith Carlock wisely keeps to himself on most of the tracks, doing little more than keeping time. Though a cynic might say this incarnation of David Johansen's career is geared towards the same demographic that turned the soundtrack to O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? into an unexpected smash, SHAKER is undeniably from the heart. Adam's Apple
Personnel: Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Reggie Workman (bass); Joe Chambers (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Recorded on February 3 & 24, 1966. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman and Michael Cuscuna. For ADAM'S APPLE Wayne Shorter returned to the simple quartet format for the last time in his solo career. This date from 1966 shows the saxophonist firmly between his modal style of the early '60s and his more experimental avant-garde period that was to come with albums like SCHIZOPHRENIA and SUPERNOVA. The effect of Shorter's membership in Miles Davis' legendary group is evident, as his improvisations here are more adventurous and his rhythmic drive more pointed and angular than previous efforts. Above all, this session gives us one last look at Shorter at his most unveiled. The soulful opening title track is a direct precursor to the jazz-rock style that would dominate the jazz world in the late '60s and '70s. A more traditional feel is incorporated for the dark "502 Blues (Drinkin' and Drivin')," a beautiful showcase for Shorter's sensitive side. The bossa nova "El Gaucho" is a highlight and one the saxophonist's most overlooked compositions. Of special note, the classic "Footprints" is presented here for the first time, several months before it was recorded by the Davis group. The delicate ballad "Teru," the bouncing "Chief Crazy Horse" and the bonus swinger "The Collector" complete this must-have session. SKU: 6536636

Full Monty Vol.1, The
Includes liner notes by Anne Dudley. With the emphasis on retro-'70s kitsch, the soundtrack to THE FULL MONTY offers up a plate of chestnuts that will bring a sense of deja vu to listeners who grew up with '70sAM radio. There's the quirky, irresistibly funky Hot Chocolate tune "You Sexy Thing," Donna Summer's lascivious "Hot Stuff," the Sister Sledge anthem "We Are Family." For that postmodern touch, there's Tom Jones covering Randy Newman (presumably via Joe Cocker) on "You Can Leave Your Hat On," which fits nicely with the libidinous theme of the rest of the material. My Generation (Deluxe Edition)
This 2-CD deluxe edition of MY GENERATION includes previously unreleased bonus tracks plus alternate and full-length versions of the original recordings. The Who: Roger Daltrey (vocals); Pete Townshend (guitar, background vocals); John Entwistle (bass, background vocals); Keith Moon (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jimmy Page (guitar); Perry Ford, Nicky Hopkins (piano); The Ivy League (background vocals). Recorded at IBC Studios and Pye Studios, London, England. Originally released on Decca (4664). Includes liner notes by Mike Shaw, Shel Talmy and Andy Neill. Having dealt with an inferior version of MY GENERATION on the market for many years, Who fans rejoiced upon hearing that early manager Shel Talmy (who owned the masters) and the surviving members of the Who reconciled. The result is that a properlyremastered version of the band's landmark debut is finally available. This Deluxe Edition also holds a bonus disc packed with plenty of extras including covers of tunes by Paul Revere and The Raiders ("Lubie [Come Back Home]"), Martha & The Vandellas ("Heat Wave"), and Eddie Holland ("Leaving Here"). At the time, many British groups created a musical identity that drew heavily on the sounds of American R&B. So along with landmark recordings like "My Generation" and "The Kids Are Alright" you'll find the rollicking "La-La-La Lies" and thundering shuffle "Out In The Street." The band also pays tribute to James Brown ("Please, Please, Please") and Bo Diddley ("I'm A Man"). Worthy of note is John Entwistle's surf-flavored instrumental "The Ox" and Pete Townshend's mind-bending nugget "Circles". Throw in stellar liner notes by Who chronicler Andy Neill and crystal-clear sound and you have a true classic finally getting its due. SKU: 1075397

Grammy Nominees 2004
During 2003, hip-hop, R&B, and deft combinations of both ruled the charts for months, so it's no surprise that this is reflected in 2004's GRAMMY NOMINEES album. The collection kicks off with Beyonce's horn-laden "Crazy in Love" (featuring her beau Jay-Z), followed by the socially conscious Black Eyed Peas/Justin Timberlake track "Where Is the Love" (Timberlake turns up again later, crooning on his own synth-heavy hit "Cry Me a River.") Eminem and 50 Cent represent straight-up hip-hop, while Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and Outkast offer their quirkier, more expansive takes on the genre. Despite the commanding presence of rap and R&B, there's still plenty of room for pop and rock. Coldplay's majestic "Clocks" stands with songs by two late, great rock luminaries--George Harrison and Warren Zevon. Elsewhere, Sting presents his electronica-tinged "Send Your Love," Evanescence blasts through "Going Under," Fountains of Wayne contemplates "Stacy's Mom," and Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty reminds listeners that he's not crazy; he's just a little "Unwell." As in past years, this edition of GRAMMY NOMINEES tidily wraps up many of the previous year's finest hits into one concise package, making it an indispensable musical time capsule. SKU: 6547464
