Heard in retrospect after PET SOUNDS or TODAY!, the Beach Boys' first album may sound somewhat embryonic. In the context of its time, however, SURFIN' SAFARI is a solid and entertaining listen filled with songs based on everyday middle-class teen life in early-1960s California. Foremost among these is the group's first hot-rod tune, "409." In some ways an even better song than "Surfin' Safari" (the bigger hit on the other side of their first Capitol single), "409"isn't as full of car-spotter lingo as the group's later hot-rod singles (most of them co-written by L.A. disc jockey and car nut Roger Christian), but it has a stripped-down, almost punky garage-rock sound that thunders along mightily behind the chanting background singers and one of Mike Love's better lead vocals.

This 1980 release, the first on producer Quincy Jones' Quest label, is one of George Benson's best. GIVE ME THE NIGHT is an album packed with one great pop tune after another finding Benson at his vocal best. The hit songs range from "Love X Love" to "Moody's Mood" to the title track, proving that he can do more than just make his guitar sing.
He sings with versatility and sensitivity, rivalingjust about any big jazz vocalist. Only two of the ten tracks are instrumentals, and those too are excellent pieces where Benson's playing will make even a modern day jazz skeptic take note. This recording features a slew of heavyweights including Lee Ritenour, Herbie Hancock, Greg Philinganes and Patti Austin. YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN was her fourth film, and in this CD we can enjoy her dramatic abilities as she movingly sings the numbers recorded for it. Harry James, one of the most famous and enduring bandleaders, also headlines. His golden-toned trumpet sweetly supports Day's beguiling balladry.
The songs here are hits, mainly from the 1920s and early '30s. Day gives"I May Be Wrong" an emotionally appropriate and intelligent treatment. She has a delightful rhythm, and James's orchestra bounces with her with good-feeling Dixieland spirit.

Dub music is a spin-off of reggae music, where the studio's mixing boardis used as an instrument, an artfully used device for taking a finished song and de- and re-constructing it in unusual ways. Two of dub's leading lights, the influential King Tubby and his protege Prince Jammy, take songs by Johnnie Clark, Jackie Mittoo, and Delroy Wilson and add explosions of echo and eerie sound effects, de-emphasizing certain instruments and distorting others, until the result is completely their own.
Tubby was and remains a major influence on reggae, dub, electronica and experimental rock bands--the music of Mad Professor, Tricky, and Laika, among others, bears the stamp of his uniquely inventive style. The musicians on this collection include such reggae stars as Earl "Chinna" Smith, Ansell Collins, and the ubiquitous rhythm team Sly & Robbie. Indie-rock bands come and go (sometimes very quickly), but few have developed such long and inventive careers as Yo La Tengo. Since the mid-1980s, Hoboken, New Jersey's finest have been perfectingtheir restless sound just across the Hudson River from the ever-fashionable music mecca of New York City. From this small distance, the group (founded by the husband/wife team of vocalist/guitarist Ira Kaplan and vocalist/drummer Georgia Hubley) started out appropriating the sounds of revered NYC bands, particularly the dreamy jangle-pop side of the Velvet Underground and the guitar noise of Sonic Youth. However, by 1993's PAINFUL, the trio (now rounded out by regular bassist James McNew) transcended their influences to beautiful effect.
The two-disc PRISONERS OF LOVE presents many of Yo La Tengo's best moments in non-chronological order, displaying the full range of the band. Here the trio veers from reverb-heavy rock ("Big Day Coming") to gentle pop (the utterly gorgeous "Our Way to Fall") to percussive funk (an entertaining take on Sun Ra's "Nuclear War"). Throughout the collection, the group's sense of adventure is clearly evident, whether running through a guitar freakout or settling into a sleepy vocal harmony. By 2005, Yo La Tengo had cemented their place in rock history as true indie greats, a status wholly affirmed by PRISONERS OF LOVE.

Partially due to the increased rate of cultural dissemination in the information age, Jeff Buckley's posthumous releases nearly caught up with those of his '60s-icon father Tim by the beginning of the 21st century. The elder Buckley had more time to grow stylistically, lending his various posthumous live albums a diversity and air of discovery Jeff's concert recordings never had a shot at. Nevertheless, every Jeff Buckley concert was an event, and his muse was so mercurial that no two of his performances were remotely alike. Thus, amid staples from GRACE such as the fragile Leonard Cohen ballad "Hallelujah"and the raga-rock "Dream Brother," there are some surprises. The previously unheard "That's All I Ask" has a loose, wandering feel that makes it seem spontaneously created. The brief lampoon of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" does not obscure Buckley's obvious debt to that band (and that song).
A turbo-charged "Eternal Life" echoes Buckley's love of the MC5, more explicitly evidenced by the following song, an unfettered cover of that group's classic "Kick out the Jams." The French audience is so taken with Buckley's swooning rendition of the Edith Piaf ballad "Je N'en Connais Pas La Fin" that he interrupts himself mid-croon to clown around with them. From ferocious rockers to pin-droppers like the Piaf song, Buckley's unearthly voice is a remarkable instrument constantly giving birth to excitement and surprise. There's no better way to experience those feelings than in a live setting, and for most Buckley fans, this is unfortunately about as close as they'll ever come to that.

Without abandoning the quirky mix of gorgeous, acoustic guitar-driven pop tunes and heart-rending, misery-driven lyrics with which they're most closely associated, The Sundays' STATIC & SILENCE finds the band further fleshing out their lush, dreamy mope-scapes. With a darker, slower approach more akin to Country than to Britpop, Harriet Wheeler's angelic voice and melancholic lyrics are given a more intimate treatment than on previous albums. Guitarist David Gavurin builds each song with intimate acoustic guitars, breezy voicings, and spacious arrangements, punctuating them with chiming, cascading layers of arpeggiated electric guitar.
Inspired instrumental touches abound; on "When I'm Thinking About You," Gavurin's baroque-sounding fingerpicking is accented with a brass section and bird calls. "Cry" mixes plaintive rhythm guitar and swirling strings, while "Another Flavour" is a distant, tremolo-filled rocker about the ephemeral nature of fashion. The somber brass on the closer "Monochrome" continues the musical exploration, giving way to sliding guitars, underscoring the depth and complexity which make STATIC & SILENCE a graceful, strong testament to the growth and staying power of these delicate pop heroes.

Though Kings of Leon hail from the South and boast a collective hirsute quality that would make CCR proud, they are neither Skynyrd-worshipping Southern rock revivalists nor country-tinged roots-rockers. Rather, their raw, shambling sound suggests a cross between the garage rock of the Strokes and White Stripes and the heartland sleaze-rock of Nashville Pussy. In fact, if the aforementioned garage types hadn't loosened up the music industry a bit, it would be hard to imagine a band as down-and-dirty as this foursome getting a major label deal. The songs aren't all blazing stompers; there are the occasional touches of acoustic guitar and piano and even a waltz tempo on one tune, but still in the same pointedly discombobulated spirit as the rockers. A hidden track on the end that sounds like EXILE-era Stones in heroin-country mode offers a hint to the Kings' deeper roots and leaves the option of sonic advancement open for the future.
