These are Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington's only recorded studio sessions working together. As the two men were arguably the most definitive improviser and bandleader/composer of the century respectively, that alone makes this collaboration of high interest. Originally released as two LPs on Roulette, "Together for the First Time" and "TheGreat Reunion of..." these sessions were well produced and well recorded the first time around. This two CD set brings together all 17 official cuts, and elegantly places all the outtakes, false starts, alternate takes, and session conversations on a second disc with its own set of liner notes.
Historical significance aside, this is simply some really great music. Armstrong's singing is relaxed and full of humor and grit, and the small combo setting means we get to hear more of Ellington's piano than usual. The group is rounded out with members of Armstrong's band, and includes the reunion of Duke and his former employee, clarinetist Barney Bigard. Duke's repertoire brings out the best in Armstrong, and he returns the favor, casting even the most familiar of these tunes in a fresh light. An exceptional recording through and through.

Combining hip-hop beats with house music production values, 1999 is an exercise in genre blurring. Recorded in an unusually short period of time (three weeks), the album mixes funk-filled tracks with the energy that Philippe brought back from his storming DJ sets at Paris clubs like Respect and the South London deep-house drunkfests Basment Jaxx and Scaramanga. DISCREET MUSIC is Brian Eno's first breakwith pop music in favor of a quieter, more meditative form, and it came about by accident. When Eno was confined to bed after an auto accident, a visitor brought him an album of classical music, which he mistakenly put on the stereo at a very low volume. Unable to get up to raise the volume, Eno heard the quiet music blend with the natural sounds of his environment, and conceived a music designed for that purpose. The several lengthy pieces on DISCREET MUSIC are named after quotes from the liner notes of a recording of Pachebel's Canon in D, which also provides the structure of the pieces themselves. Built on subtle tape loops, the pieces retain just enough of those structures to avoid the deliberate formlessness of Eno's later ambient experiments. The very beginnings of ambient music are on this disc.

BLANK GENERATION is now widely regarded as one of the seminal points in the punk explosion, along with the Sex Pistols' NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS and The Ramones debut. It is a startling, urgent record filled with the pent-up frustration and nihilistic despair that earmarked the potency of the late '70s punk movement. Former Television member Hell, however, was considerably more well read than the bulk of his punk counterparts, a circumstance that ups the ante on BLANK GENERATION.
The title track has become one of punk's signature tunes, and it certainly seems to embody the entire spirit of the movement in one fell swoop. Although Hell has repeatedly insisted that the title refers to "blank" as in "fill in the...", it was taken literally, and the deep-seated nihilism struck a resounding chord. The Voidoids themselves helpedin no small part make BLANK GENERATION a touchstone. Guitar greats Ivan Julian and Robert Quine provide a searing backdrop on the title track, "Love Comes In Spurts," as well as a weirdly straight reading of Sinatra's "All the Way."

TELEGRAM finds Bjork and her comrades polishing the rusty surfaces of pop music, creating new musical formations that glimmer and shine. These songs have been redecorated with the gracious elan that we have come to expect from this charismatic chanteuse. New installations of drum-and-bass textures, orchestral arrangements, trip-hop beats and hip-hop samples are overlaid on the songs from POST, building upon their subtle post-modern beauty.
The Brodksy Quartet offers a modern-classical intepretation of "Hyperballad." "You're Flirting Again" gains a lush orchestration. "Headphones," by contrast, now features a sparse, tundra-like soundscape. The one new song, "My Spine," features Bjork crooning over a primitive backdrop of mystical chimes and bells, creating an organic incantation that sounds miles away from any territory that pop music has traversed thus far.

Part of Triple X Records' ongoing reissue series of Johnny Thunders live albums, BELFAST NIGHTS documents a ragged-but-right trio set recorded at Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland on October 27, 1984. Thunders, the ex-New York Dollspunk icon and former leader of the Heartbreakers, is backed by ex-Clash drummer Terry Chimes and relatively unknown bassist Keith Yon.
As always with solo Thunders shows, the fantastic and the wretched share the same space-often in the same song. That unevenness eventually becomes part of the charm. The 19-track set opens, as usual, with a muscular version of the surf classic "Pipeline" and careens through punk covers and New York Dolls and Heartbreakers classics like "Personality Crisis," "Chinese Rocks"-which the band attempts three times, and the immortal "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory." This same concert was previously released on the Anagram label as BELFAST ROCKS.

The Isley Brothers are among the most sampled artists of the 1990s and 2000s. TAKEN TO THE NEXT PHASE re-imagines the Isleys' sweet funk & soul by featuring remixes and "reconstructions" of their songs, as realized by contemporary DJs and hip-hop artists. On this 2004 collection, Will.i.am (of the Black Eyed Peas) and Mos Def rub shoulders with producers Ahmir "uestlove" Thompson and Gabriel Rene (whose faithful treatment of "Footsteps in the Dark" deepens the original) for a postmodern homage to one of the great, long-standing R&B acts.
The remixes generally preserve the integrity of the original tunes, and include the Isleys'verses and choruses amid various edits, samples, and layered beats. The D-Nat & Onda track, "It's a New Thing (It's Your Thing)," features De La Soul, and is irrepressible in its funky exuberance. Steven "Lenky" Marsden contributes a reggae-fused take on "Between the Sheets," complete with a ragga-rap that adds staccato rhythms to the song's smoothed-out vibe. The project establishes an appealing continuum between the music of the past and the present, acknowledging a debt to the Isleys' innovation, while updating those sounds for the 21st century.

Thistwo-disc set gathers together the cuts for three Blue Note sessions teaming Grant Green with Sonny Clark. The first, NIGERIA, was originally release posthumously in 1980 and features Green's only collaboration with drummer Art Blakey. GOODEN'S CORNER and OLEO were both only released in Japan in 1979 and 1980, respectively. The latter two sessions featured Louis Hayes on drums along with Sam Jones, the bassist for all three albums. Luckily these sessions have been carefully restored and release for all to hear.
The focus of all three session is mainly on standards. In the hands of Green and Clark, however, these familiar tunes become something else entirely. The force of their strong musical personalities is so consuming that works like Gerswin's "It Ain't Necessarily So," here taken as a grungy shuffle, take on a whole new light. Likewise, the Kern-Hammerstein classic "The Song Is You" and Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love" are both as fresh and exciting as the day they were written. Disc two features Henry Mancini's "Moon River" reshaped into a delightful bounce and Green's shockingly unusual read of Sonny Rollins' "Oleo." Also found here are some Green originals including the dynamic "Hip Funk."

Wire's furious interpretation of punk was encapsulated on this primitive, minimalist debut. Abrasive and disjointed, these 21 tracks exude a fury impossible toignore and one enhanced by their very brevity. Tracks halt, sometimes abruptly, when the point has been made, creating an ever-changing melange of sound and texture. While generally aggressive, Pink Flag also boasts two wonderful pop songs ('Ex-Lion Tamer' and 'Mannequin'), suggesting that Wire would not be constrained by stylistic expectations. The album's mixture of polemics and pointedness would influence several US groups, including R.E.M., who later covered 'Strange'. Its perceptive urgency grows with time.

New Orleans-born pianist Mac Rebennack had been making a living as a Los Angeles session musician for years before he adopted the persona of Dr. John, a name taken from a 19th-century witch doctor. Under that guise, he crafted a sound that mixed the old world of New Orleans (the tribal rhythms of the Mardi Gras Indians, second-line grooves, swamp blues) with the new musical world of 1968 (funk, R&B, rock, free jazz). The resulting gumbo bears a deep, dark, mysterious flavor full of voodoo mysticism and ancient rites.
GRIS-GRIS would have made the perfect soundtrack for a horror movie set in New Orleans, asDr. John's raspy murmur weaves a hypnotic spell atop a bed of exotic-sounding string instruments, ominous keyboards, primal percussion stomps, and spooky background vocal chants. Few could have predicted that this fearsome medicine man would eventually metamorphose into a charming, accessible rock star.

The definitive rock opera, TOMMY liberated the Who from a "singles band" stigma, and made them an international attraction. Composer Pete Townshend had flirted with the conceptual format on two previous releases; here his vision was spread over two ambitious albums that played to his group's main strengths. Memorable songs were matched by pulsating musicianship, which emphasized the Who's internal kineticism, while the cast of characters unleashed revealed an unconventional imagination. Townshend even incorporates "Eyesight To The Blind," first recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson, as part of his fable about the "deaf, dumb and blind kid," a rare but successful reference to the past in what is a forward-looking achievement.

Unlike many British soul acts who tend to serve their music up with a polite, retro presentation, Mark Morrison's RETURN OF THE MACK squares itself in the present alongside peers like R. Kelly and Mary J. Blige. This is a spicy blend of contemporary R&B soaked in hip-hop and dancehall flavors . Various suggestive shades of sexuality provide the flow, from the Blackstreet-flavored new-jack posturing of "Let's Get Down" to the more blatant "Horny," an electro-funk excursion that mixes in elements of Rick James, the Gap Band and Cameo's Larry Blackmon.
Elsewhere, "Get High With Me" allows Morrison to pay homage to Dr. Dre as he sings about "the chronic" over a woozy, hallucinogenic rhythm and Dre-like keyboard squeals. Mark Morrison's confident swagger coupled with his randy mix of sex and soul promises great things for the futureof UK R&B.

The Band's fourth album, from 1971, shows the strains which accompanied its recording, and in fact continued to unravel the group over the next five years. Much anticipated upon its release, it can now be appreciated as the fragmented work that it is. Having set impossibly high standards with their previous releases, they were bound to teeter, and they did. But even when falling short of their masterpieces MUSIC FROM BIG PINK and THE BAND, they are still a powerful force to be reckoned with, yielded a dazzling array of rewards. "Life Is A Carnival" began their association with Allen Toussaint--his horn arrangements led to a full-blown collaboration on the live ROCK OF AGES the following year. Other highlights include the Richard Manuel-Van Morrison duet on "4% Pantomime," Dylan's "When I Paint My Masterpiece," "Thinkin' Out Loud," and one of their most overlookedsongs, the hauntingly beautiful "The Moon Struck One."
