It might come as a surprise to anyone familiar only with their satin-smooth soft-rock hits, but when Chicago first formed in 1967, they were actually doing something new, cool, and interesting: rock & roll with a fully-integrated jazz horn section. 1969's CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY has two of the group's early hits, "Beginnings" and "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" but it also includes some of their most audacious material ever, notably Terry Kath's seven-minute "Free-Form Guitar," a free jazz improvisation for heavily distorted electric guitar that--no kidding--would not sound out of place on an early Sonic Youth album, and the politically-charged, side-long suite comprised of "Prologue," "Someday (August 28, 1968)," and "Liberation," the closest Chicago ever came to a true jazz-rock synthesis. Chicago's later work deserves many of the critical brickbats it's received, but CHICAGO TRANSITAUTHORITY is a genuinely interesting album.

On KALEIDOSCOPE, DJ Food has created a mysterious, magical journey into the possibilities of sound. For this album, the collective slimmed down to a nucleus of P.C. and Strictly Kev (founder members Matt Black and Jonathan Moore having departed to concentrate on their work in Coldcut). The result is a focussed and accessiblecollection incorporating jazz, hip-hop and film soundtrack ambience.
"Full Bleed" sets the pace with some mellow Fender Rhodes piano, slinky vibraphone and sumptuous moody strings. This track and others are punctuated with cut-up speech samples which could have become tiresome were it not for DJ Food's skilled approach. After the bongo Moog frenzy of "Cookin'," there's "The Angry Young Rebel," where word jazz guru Ken Nordine intones gravely over an infectious beatnik riff. The beats drop off altogether during the latter half of the album, where some of the finest moments occur. "The Sky At Night" evokes a surreal underwater world, while the soothing string-soaked "Minitoka" sounds like a warm summer evening, bringing KALEIDOSCOPE to a perfect conclusion.

Ginuwine's tasteful arrangements and subtle, insinuating vocal style make his debut album an exceptional slice of contemporary R&B. Utilizing sparse electronic backing that allows for plenty of atmospheric space, Ginuwine lays down sensuous, low-key vocals that avoid the melismatic histrionics of too many of his contemporaries. He is adept at setting a mood, using samples and snatches of dialogue to create interludes between several of the songs that add to the evocative feel of the proceedings. Several songs make good use of guest vocalists, particularly "Holler," which gets plenty of mileage from a sassy rap by Virginia Slim.
While Ginuwine indulges in his share of lascivious banter, he manages to flesh out (no pun intended) his characters by showing their loneliness and desire for true love along with their more carnal concerns. The music is smooth and organic, melodically inviting and rhythmically irresistible.

Having billed it as "The Ultimate Guide to Underground Hip-hop," it makes sense that Rawkus Records would choose an underground mixtape format for their compilation and enlist Black Moon co-founder and beat-miner extraordinaire Evil Dee to set the proper tone. Mindful of the comp's function as a showcase for Rawkus' 12" catalogue and its small but intensely talented stable of artists, Evil Dee opts for a fairly non-invasive mix. Restricting himself to swift blends between songs, he occasionaly uses instrumentals to extend the beat and allow space for the mixshow personality-jock patter he's perfected as host of Hot 97's Monday night hip-hop slot. But even he can't resist indulging in a little turntable jazz over the incredibly out-there beat of Company Flow's "Fire In Which You Burn." Easily the most unique production to back a hip-hop track in recent memory, the stuttery, off-kilter drum patterns make your averagedrum-and-bass cut sound like ballet.

With the ominous, distant thunder of timpani, and jagged syncopations of strings, percussion and deep brass, Bernard Herrmann sets an abstract, menacing tone for one of the all-time great exercises in cinematic virtuosity, Alfred Hitchcock's comic thriller, NORTH BY NORTHWEST. Their imaginative marriage proved to be an enduring one, without equal in the history of cinema, save perhaps for that between the Italian director Frederico Fellini and his alter-ego, Nino Rota.
Inspired by the works of American post-modernists such as Charles Ives and Aaron Copeland, Herrmann became a conductor for the CBS Symphony, composing incidental music for many of the network's leading dramas. In this capacity, Herrmann met director Orson Welles and provided the score to CITIZEN KANE. Over the next 35 years Herrman composed memorable themes for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, CAPE FEAR, FAHRENHEIT 451, TAXI DRIVER and Rod Serling's THE TWILIGHT ZONE, among others. Still, Herrmann is most closely identified with the Hitchcock classics--try, for instance, to imagine the shower scene in PSYCHO without Herrmann's shrieking atonal strings.
For NORTH BY NORTHWEST, Herrmann composes a brittle, rhythmically driving dance--a fandango--as the main theme. A parody of Wagner's love theme from TRISTAN UND ISOLDE forms a leit motif for the romance between Roger Thornhill and counter-spy Eve Kendall ("Conversation Piece"), while moody descending strings and woodwind accents ("The Cafeteria") identify Thornhill's alter-ego, George Kaplan. Herrmann's spooky use of rhythmic bowing, pizzicato strings, moaning brass, harp and vibes ("The House," "The Balcony," "The Matchbox") provides an eerie sense of anticipation as Thornhill races to rescue Kendall from assassination. Many of the main themes intermingle in a furious rush of strings, percussion and barking brass as the movie races to a climax ("On The Rocks," "The Cliff," "Finale") on the face of Mount Rushmore.

Joe Walsh was added to give gutsy guitarin the wake of the country flavour of Bernie Leaden, while Randy Meisner grew in stature as a writer with 'Try And Love Again' and 'New Kid In Town'. The early-'80s post-punk musings of the Meat Puppets give new meaning to the term "alternative country." Instead of adding a country flavor to traditional rock, or overdriving a honky-tonk sound, the group achieved a genuine marriage of avant-rock weirdness and earthy Americana on this, their defining release. The frenzied two-step of "Magic Toy Missing" and "Lost" mates hoedown with electric freakout. The group's tripping-in-the-desert sense of neo-psychedelia is displayed at its apexon the twisted classic "Plateau" and the acid-drenched country-punk of "New Gods." Like Neil Young (a strong influence), the Meat Puppets were blessed with a totally natural sense of strangeness that allowed them to be both of the earth and beyond it simultaneously. Though 1978's I'VE ALWAYS BEEN CRAZY was a major success for Waylon Jennings, the seams in his public image were beginning to show, with numerous songs casting aspersions on his own fame and outlaw reputation. Though Waylon had pioneered the Outlaw Country movement a few years earlier, and celebrated his rough-and-rowdy ways in song, the hard-living lot of a country superstar was taking a toll on him, and he was beginning to detail that process in a very personal way.
It would have been difficult to get more explicit about the issue than "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand," a sentiment reinforced by the title track's acknowledgement of Jennings's out-of-control lifestyle, and by "A Long Time Ago," which sums up his troubles with everything from love to drugs to the press. It's no coincidence that there's a higher percentage of self-penned tunes here than on many Waylon albums. If it weren't for the fact that he still sounded like a master of his mode, and was still hugely popular, I'VE ALWAYS BEEN CRAZY would have seemed like a eulogy for the Outlaw Country scene, but,in retrospect, that might be just what it is.

This album is a compilation documenting Webster's output for Verve Records inthe 1950s. It features many of his own compositions such as "Love's Away," "Soulville," and "De Dar." Also, we hear Webster play superb versions of some of his very favorite tunes such as "Chelsea Bridge," "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To," and most of all, Duke Ellington's classic "In a Mellow Tone."
Webster is joined by many of the greatest swing/mainstream jazz musicians of all time on this disc. Readings of "Old Folks" with Benny Carter sitting in on alto sax and "You're Mine, You!" with Teddy Wilson tickling the ol' ivories are but two examples of the caliber of musicianship you'll find on this release. As always, Webster's finest moments are the ballads. Renditions of "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me," for example, document Webster still in his prime.
