Up [SACD]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel includes: Peter Gabriel (vocals, arranger, guitar, piano, harmonium, organ, Mellotron, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, prgramming, samples); Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (vocals); Richard Evans (acoustic guitar); David Rhodes (guitar, background vocals); Daniel Lanois, Peter Green, Tony Berg (guitar); John Brion (mandolin, chamberlin); Shankar (violin); The London Session Orchestra (strings); Christian Le Chevretel (trumpet); The Black Dyke Band (horns); David Sancious (Hammond B-3 organ); Danny Thompson, Tony Levin (bass); Manu Katche, Steve Gadd, Dominic Greensmith, Dave Power (drums); Richard Chappell (percussion, programming); Will White, Stephen Hague, Manhut Dominique (percussion); The Blind Boys Of Alabama (background vocals). Producers: Peter Gabriel, Steve Osborne, Stephen Hague. Principally recorded at Real World, Box, England; Air Lyndhurst, England; and Hype Studios, Singapore. "The Barry Williams Show" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Though much effort has obviously been put into the sonic details of UP's production, and to fine effect, the album seems to represent not so much a new direction for Peter Gabriel, but rather a consolidation of the styles he's mined in preceding years. For instance, the opening track "Darkness" combines the dark, tension-filled paranoia of Gabriel's third self-titled album with the positive, seemingly therapy-derived lyrical direction of US's "Digging in the Dirt." Similarly, the heartworn emotionality of "No Way Out" brings to mind US's "Red Rain," but adds some slinky spy-movie guitar lines. With a decade passing since his last album of new songs, Gabriel clearly has much to say, and accordingly most tracks hover around theseven-minute mark and are filled with sophisticated, enticing touches in an agreeable electronic/organic blend. With nothing to prove anymore, Gabriel sounds appropriately unconcerned about commerciality, as the only thing that comes within shouting distance of an "accessible" track is the TV-sensationalism parody "The Barry Williams Show," whose length and gritty lyrics make it an unlikely candidate for the top 40. In the end, UP is the sound of a mature artist pursuing the perfection of his craft, giving little thought to anything but the realization of his distinctive artistic vision. SKU: 1082965

Payton's Place
Personnel: Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Tim Warfield (tenor saxophone); Anthony Wonsey (piano); Reuben Rogers (bass); Adonis Rose (drums). Additional personnel: Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone); Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove (trumpet). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York on September 29 & 30, 1997 and January 6, 1998. Includes liner notes by Tony Green and Nicholas Payton. Young trumpeter Nicholas Payton shows some obvious maturity on PAYTON"S PLACE, his third solo disc. Payton was always an improviser with a rare sense of style for his age, but his playing on this disc suggests a little extra seasoning had taken place over his first few years as a leader. Penning most of the tracks on this rather lengthy disc, Payton increases hisrange as a composer as well. Surrounding himself with other "Young Lions" of the day (Tim Warfield, Anthony Wonsey, Reuben Rogers and Adonis Rose), Payton offers a fresh, vibrant sound from his ensemble while maintaining the post-bop aesthetic that is the vogue of his ilk. The guest stars, however, are some very accomplished jazzmen, indeed. In a stunning performance, Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargove join Payton on "The Three Trumpeteers," a rollicking affair that will have you gasping at the display of dexterity. Saxophonist Joshua Redman also drops by on the hard swinging "A Touch Of Silver," an obvious tribute to the piano master of the same name. In all, this is a significant plateau in Payton's career. Who's Next (Deluxe Edition) [Digipak]
The Who: Roger Daltrey (vocals); Pete Townsend (guitar, piano, organ, ARP synthesizer, background vocals); John Entwistle (horns, piano, bass, background vocals); Keith Moon (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Leslie West (guitar); Nicky Hopkins (piano). Producers: The Who, Glyn Johns, Kit Lambert. Recorded between 1968 & 1971. Includes liner notes by Pete Townsend, John Atkins, and Chris Charlesworth. Though Pete Townshend was originally unhappy with WHO'S NEXT, it was quickly welcomed by critics and fans, becoming one of the most celebrated titles in their enduring catalog. His frustrations boiled down to the album being a compromised version of a larger work he'd envisioned, LIFEHOUSE, which proved too unwieldy to be realized. Expanded to a two-disc set with essays by both Townshend and John Atkins, the original nine-song album is appended with six additional studio tracks. These include earlier versions of the album's songs and a cover of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Baby Don't You Do It." Recorded in New York during the spring on 1971 in the midst of a fraying relationship with producer Kit Lambert, the early cuts clearly don't have the sonic breadth and wallop of what the Who achieved backin England later in the year, but are fascinating nonetheless. The second disc was recorded live before an invited audience, and was originally part of the album's grand plan. Mixing new material with a covers ("Road Runner," Mose Allison's "Young Man Blues") and original tunes from their past (the anthem "My Generation"), the band plays with a palpable urgency and fire. This was the Who at the peak of its powers, a status the group would retain as a live act through the '70s. SKU: 1081612

MAN WITH THE FUN was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. In the grand tradition of modern pop music, MAN WITH THE FUN is something of a mongrel child of pop, rock, R&B, dancehall and roots reggae that isn't quite any of the above. The infectious opening cut, "That Girl, catapults a sample from the Booker T & The MG's' classic "Green Onions" into a new context (one that allows for some toasting by dancehall sensation Shaggy). In an act of cultural ping-pong, Priest covers the Police chestnut "Message in a Bottle." The Police took reggae and Anglicized it; Priest takes the Police and reggaefies them. Priest displays a strong R&B influence on "Golden Teardrops," neatly contextualizing the American soul sensibility that colors much of MAN WITH THE FUN. In the midst of all this genre-hopping, the unifying elements of the album are Priest's smooth, assured vocal style and the bright, upbeat feeling that is ubiquitous enough to be considered thematic. In short, this album's title turns out to be quite an accurate moniker. SKU: 1001303

Long-delayed major label debut from ultra-hip NY punk-funk band finally hits the shelves. Never Never Land (Revisited/Original NYC Master Version - Limited Edition)
Includes a bonus remix disc. UNKLE: Richard File (vocals, acoustic guitar, synthesizer, programming); James Lavelle. Additional personnel include: Joel Cadbury (vocals, acoustic guitar); Ian Brown , Josh Homme, Robert Del Naja (vocals); Patrick Byrne (guitar, piano); Jimmy Hogarth (guitar); Antony Genn (piano, synthesizer, background vocals); Brian Eno (synthesizer, sound effects); Jarvis Cocker (synthesizer); Mani (bass guitar); Shawn Lee (drums); Richard Flack (programming); Graham Gouldman, Beccy Byrne, Melissa Jacques (background vocals). UNKLE'slong-awaited 2004 follow-up to 1998's PSYENCE FICTION sees DJ Shadow M.I.A. and mainstay James Lavelle instead employing longtime party pal Richard File, who replaces Shadow's loping, doom-laden vibes with something a bit more psychedelic and free-floating. A plethora of stellar guests solidifies the new sound, including Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja (the synth-laden "Invasion"), Jarvis Cocker and Brian Eno (the 4 a.m. paranoia of "I Need Something Stronger"), and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme (the urgent "Safe in Mind [Please Take This Gun from Out My Face]"). "In a State" is a smooth, groove-heavy track, with File crooning a refrain that seems like it finally escaped from some mid-1990s dance-floor. Even some Stone Roses get thrown into the mix, with vocalist Ian Brown and bassist Mani reuniting on "Reign." The range of styles and moods here is impressive, considering that it all comes together with the epic scope of a soundtrack to some film too cool to ever be released. SKU: 6573391

Worldwide Underground
Personnel: Erykah Badu, Stic Man (vocals); Queen Latifah, Angie Stone, Bahamadiah (rap vocals); Lenny Kravitz (electric guitar); Dwayne Kerr (flute); Roy Hargrove (trumpet, background vocals); James Poyser (keyboards, programming); R.C. Williams (keyboards); Braylon Lacy (bass); Doc Gibbs (percussion); Rashad Smith, Dead Prez (programming); Zap Mama, Karon Wheeler, China Blac, Robert Pack, Sam Bell, Jazz Bell (background vocals). Producers: Erykah Badu, James Poyser, Rashad Smith, Dead Prez. Despite being classified as an EP, the near 50-minute length of WORLD WIDE UNDERGROUND makes it closer to being Erykah Badu's fourth full-length outing. Inspired by the Frustrated Artist Tour that found thisTexan crisscrossing the world in 2002, Badu uses a very groove-oriented and loosely defined approach towards these songs, thanks to the collaborative skills of her fellow members in the Freakquency team--James Poyser, Rashad "Ringo" Smith, and RC Williams. The results range from the light and sensual flow of "Back in the Day," (featuring some crisp guitar licks by Lenny Kravitz) to "Bump It" with its mix of sprinkled in hip-hop beats, lightly layered synths, and a sweet mix of harmonies by Zap Mama and Karon Wheeler. Along the way, Badu must have been digging in the crates for inspiration, because she includes a hypnotic take on Donald Byrd's 1975 recording "Think Twice" (featuring tasty playing by trumpeter Roy Hargrove). Badu also serves up a remix of the Grammy-winning "Love of My Life Worldwide," built on the foundation of Sequence's 1979 hit "Funk You Up," which features cameos by Queen Latifah, Bahamadia, Badu alter-ego MC Apples, and Angie Stone (the original Angie B of Sequence). Clouds Taste Metallic
The Flaming Lips: Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins, Steven Drozd, Ronald Jones. CLOUDS TASTE METALLIC is the seventh Flaming Lips record, and it is a far looser and more relaxed affair than anything that preceded it. The weirdness flows out of head-Lip Wayne Coyne's head as it always has done, but this is a record by a band that no longer has anything to prove--not to themselves, their record label, nor their fans. They are content to just do want they want. With sparser instrumentation than before, Coyne's voice is both more intelligible and closer to the front of the mix, and the effects, though still present, are more restrained, used (for the most part) as frosting rather than cake. Standouts on this record include the countrified slide guitar on "Placebo Headwound"; the genuinely sweet "This Here Giraffe," which comes complete with flutes and a xylophone and sounds like the theme to a particularly strange television show; "They Punctured My Yolk," which sounds bizarrely like a freaked-out version of "Seasons in the Sun"; and the supremely laid-back "Evil Will Prevail," with its gloriously swelling final verse. CLOUDS TASTE METALLIC is a nice record in the best sense of the word, and a good place to begin investigating the Lips. SKU: 3101838

My Baby Don't Tolerate
Personnel: Lyle Lovett (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dean Parks (acoustic & electric guitars); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Sam Bush (mandolin); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Matt Rollings (piano); Viktor Krauss (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums); Jon Randall, Shannon Sanders (background vocals). Recorded at O'Henry Studios, Burbank, California. MY BABY DON'T TOLERATE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "My Baby Don't Tolerate" was nominated for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. For someone who made his name on his unique songwriting acumen, Lyle Lovett didn't exactly inundate his fans with new material in the 1990s. He offered only two albums of newly written material, not counting I LOVE EVERYBODY's selection of old, previously unrecorded compositions. After a seven-year wait, Lovett defied expectationswith MY BABY DON'T TOLERATE. His new songs proved not to be wry, ever-so-clever set pieces like some of his most popular '80s tunes, but more economical creatures full of small observations and very little of Lovett's trademark stylistic quirks. Aside from the occasional oddball touch, like name-checking German director Wim Wenders in a song about trucks, this is a pretty straightforward affair. The Western Swing-tinged arrangements are too tasteful (and tasty) for mainstream Nashville, but otherwise this is the most accessible Lyle Lovett album to date. SKU: 1087849

You Can't Fight What You Can't See
Girls Against Boys: Scott McCloud (vocals, guitar, sampler); Eli Janney (vocals, keyboards, bass, sampler); Johnny Temple (bass); Alexis Fleisig (drums). Four years after their disappointing major label debut, 1998's FREAKONICA, Girls Against Boys return with YOU CAN'T FIGHT WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE, their first album for the emo stalwart Jade Tree Records and a much more successful marriage of pop sheen and the punky grind of their earliest recordings. FREAKONICA tilted too far into the mainstream and ended up sounding like Garbage with a male singer andless interesting hooks. However, YOU CAN'T FIGHT WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE starts from the same Fugazi/Superchunk-oriented guitar rock as the band's earlier albums (especially apparent on "300 Looks for the Summer") but adds a little Jesus and Mary Chain-style (DARKLANDS-era) pop sense to songs like "BFF" and "Miami Skyline." There's also a subtle but effective use of electronics and loops throughout. The best tracks, "Tweaker" and "All the Rage," are simultaneously powerfully noisy and hook-filled and accessible, making YOU CAN'T FIGHT WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE one of the most satisfying and enjoyable albums of the band's career. Private Press, The
DJ Shadow is Josh Davis. THE PRIVATE PRESS is DJ Shadow's follow-up to 1996's groundbreaking ENTRODUCING. Released in at least four editions--including vinyl (natch) and a limited two-disc CD set--PRESS finds Shadow picking up his toys and moving on from the playground that he built with his debut, a playground now inundated with followers and imitators. He experiments with a number of new elements, everything from extended vocal piecesand more "traditional" song structures, to the weird and wooly world of Krautrock. All the while he continues to display a mastery of turntables and drum machines, and perhaps most importantly, maintains his absolutely preternatural ability to create wicked combinations from THE most obscure and bizarre samples. Of particular note are "Monosylabik," a sonic fondue pot dripping with melted and seriously damaged rhythms and beats, and "Six Days," where an extended vocal sampled from an oddball 1971 psychedelic LP meets an armload of retro-futuristic sounds and effects. All in all, PRIVATE PRESS sees a mind-boggling array of skills used in the service of some laid-back grooves that are, somehow, simultaneously spacious and dense. SKU: 1072616

Soulville
Personnel: Ben Webster (tenor saxophone, piano); Oscar Peterson (piano); Herb Ellis (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Stan Levey (drums). Recorded in Hollywood, California on October 15, 1957. Originally released on Verve (8274). Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso. On this 1957 date, Webster is teamed up with the great Oscar Peterson Quartet. Supporting Webster on each track, this music lays "in the pocket" (as musicians would say) quite well. Much of this is due to drummer Stan Levey's buoyant swing. Webster himself is heard on two simple blues numbers of his own penning including the title track and "Late Date." Other songs include the standards "Lover Come Back To Me," "Where Are You," and "Makin' Whoopee." Perhaps the most riveting tune on SOULVILLE, however, is the beautiful ballad "Time on My Hands." Indeed, Webster is one of the most brilliant instrumental balladeers jazz has ever produced. No one can get that airy (even sultry) tone quite like Webster. Finally, as an intriguing bonus, we hear Webster perform three tunes in duet with Levey. Intriguingly, Webster plays piano on these tracks! Using an antiquated stride/boogie woogie style, Webster shows that his talent reaches beyond the saxophone. SKU: 4127643

Very Best Of Tom Jones, The
Producers: Peter Sullivan, Gordon Mills, J. Jeczalik,Anne Dudley. All tracks have been digitally remastered. THE BEST OF TOM JONES is probably the most thorough and entertaining of the many Tom Jones compilations available. Twenty-two tracks are exquisitely remastered to let every one of those over-the-top string sections and all of Jones' manly bellows reverberate as nature intended. All of Jones' biggest hits are included, from 1964's "What's New Pussycat," through such definitive Jones classics as "It's Not Unusual," "She's a Lady," and "Delilah," all the way up to his tongue-in-cheek comeback with the Art Of Noise, a 1989 electro-shock collaboration on Prince's "Kiss." Too long thought of as merely a kitsch figure, Jones is an undeniable talent. However, it seems that either you get him or you don't. If you get him, this is the anthology to get. SKU: 1001048

Velvet Underground And Nico, The (Deluxe Edition)
Full title: The Velvet Underground & Nico: Deluxe Edition. THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO: DELUXE EDITION contains both the complete stereo and mono versions of The Velvet Underground's debut album plus four rare single versions and five selections from Nico's CHELSEA GIRL. The limited edition features a "peelable" version of Andy Warhol's famous banana. Velvet Underground & Nico: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Nico (vocals); Sterling Morrison (guitar, bass, background vocals); John Cale (electric viola, piano, bass, background vocals); Maureen Tucker (percussion, background vocals). Producers: Andy Warhol, Tom Wilson. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson Recorded at T.T.G. Studios, Hollywood California; Sceptor Studios and Mayfair Sound Studios, New York, New York in April & November 1966 & April-May 1967. Originally released on Verve (5008). Includes liner notes by Dave Thompson. All tracks have been digitallyremastered. Brian Eno once said that only a hundred people bought Velvet Underground records when they first came out, but those hundred people all went out and formed their own bands. The rest, of course, is history; the Velvet Underground was the catalyst that helped spark punk rock, and began the growth of an alternative branch within rock and roll's grand family tree. VU's was an unparalleled glimpse into the Summer Of Love's alter ego, complete with graphic, unapologetic descriptions of intravenous drug-use and risque sexual situations. Their 1967 debut, VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO, was a tour de force that may never be equaled for its sheer radicalism in the face of rock convention. The Velvet Underground also mapped out unconquered sonic territories. Bassist John Cale was weaned on deconstructing classical theory--the perfect avant-garde foil to help bring Reed's terse songs to life. Even more noticeable when he would switch to electric viola, Cale's sound evoked the terror of Reed's compositions, with the bowed strings screeching like a runaway subway car. Drummer Maureen Tucker played like no one before her. Her frantic swipes could mimic a galloping rush in "Heroin," or work with the delicate, hesitant charm of "All Tomorrow's Parties." Guitarist Sterling Morrison was a master of his craft, ably switching from oddly Middle-Eastern plucking (the eerie "All Tomorrow's Parties") to head-on rock (the ultra-edgy "Waiting For The Man"), always adding just the right element to fatten the cacophony. VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO is one of rock's most significant debuts. SKU: 1072831
