Thoroughly Modern Millie
Principal cast includes: Sutton Foster, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Harriet Harris, Marc Kudish, Gavin Creel, Angela Christian, Ken Leung, Francis Jue, Anne L. Nathan. THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE was nominated for the 2003Grammy Awards for Best Musical Show Album. The theatrical tale of a '20s Flapper gal, THOROUGHLY MODERN MINNIE already had a place in the hearts of many 21st-century folks due to the version featuring Julie Andrews singing atop an orchestra conducted by no less than Andre Previn. This newer take on the classic musical, however, is full of just as much verve as any previous staging. How else could it have taken jaded New York theater audiences by storm? Moving full circle from the plaint "What Do I Need With Love?" to the revelatory "I'm in Love With Someone," Millie's voyage is one that can be enjoyed equally as well on this disc as it can on the stage. Brown Album, The
Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, bass); LarryLaLonde (guitar); Brain (drums). Recorded between December 1996 and April 1997. Primus' sixth full-length release solidifies the trio's direction as a funkabilly band driven by Les Claypool's slapping and flamenco (!) techniques on the six string bass. On the opening track, "The Return Of Sathington Willougby," Claypool addresses his listeners with a staggered voice and conspiracy-theory philosophy strongly reminiscent of William S. Burroughs, accompanied by Brain's militaristic drumming, Larry LaLonde's high octave guitar noise, and his own slap-happy bass. Claypool's lyrics are as quirky as ever, dealing with issues such as insane adolescents, confederate drunks, and Kalamazoo, Michigan. BROWN ALBUM was recorded solely in the analog format, giving Claypool's bass an even crunchier sound than on previous recordings. With Brain's drum fills and Larry LaLalonde's funk riffs, Primus' music has more body than ever before. SKU: 1000654

Venus And Mars
Wings: Paul McCartney (bass, guitar, vocals); Denny Laine (guitar, background vocals); Jimmy McCulloch (guitar); Linda McCartney (keyboards, background vocals); Joe English (drums). Additional personnel: Dave Mason (guitar); Tom Scott (saxophone); Allen Toussaint (piano); Geoff Britton (drums); Afro (congas). Originally released on Capitol (11419). All songs written by Paul McCartney except "Medicine Jar" (Jimmy McCulloch/Colin Allen) and "Crossroads Theme" (Tony Hatch). Includes 3 tracks that were not on the original release of VENUS & MARS. VENUS & MARS is an interesting mix of musical styles, punctuated by Paul McCartney's unerring sense of melody and hooky songs. Along with founding members Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney & Denny Laine, recent additions Jimmy McCulloch (ex-Thunderclap Newman) Joe English rounded out the band on guitar and drums respectively. Guests for these sessions (partially recorded at New Orleans' famedSea Saint Studios) included N'awlins pianist Allen Toussaint, saxophonist Tom Scott and guitarist Dave Mason. The highlights include the hard-rocking anthem "Rock Show" (later used to great effect in the Rock For Kampuchea benefit concert five years later) and the gently nostalgic "You Gave Me The Answer," Macca's tribute to the sounds of vaudeville introduced to him by his late father. Elsewhere, the mysticism of the French Quarter is embedded within "Spirits Of Ancient Egypt" while New Orleans' rich R&B tradition is all over the horn-laden "Call Me Back Again." The bouncy number one single "Listen To What The Man Said" also contrasts nicely with the melancholic title track. SKU: 4127812

Best Of Jefferson Airplane, The
Jefferson Airplane: Paul Kantner (vocals, guitar); Grace Slick, Marty Balin (vocals); Jorma Kaukonen (guitar); Papa John Creach (violin); Jack Casady (bass); Spencer Dryden, Joey Covington (drums). Includes liner notes by Mike Beeferman. It's virtually impossible for a single ten-track disc to fully synopsize the career of a group as groundbreaking as the Jefferson Airplane, but this compilation does an admirable job of covering the most important bases. All the essential items that helped define West Coast psychedelia inthe '60s are here, from the acid bolero drug fable "White Rabbit" to the folk-jazz sci-fi epic "Wooden Ships," which Paul Kantner wrote with David Crosby and Steve Stills (CSN did well with the tune also). Lesser known but no less impressive are tracks like "Third Week the Chelsea" and "Long John Silver," the title track from the final album recorded under the original Airplane moniker. These relative obscurities round out this brief but effective compilation nicely. SKU: 4126686

Fore
Recorded at Studio D Recording, Sausalito, California. Yes, FORE! is the album with those two huge singles, "Stuck with You" and "Hip to Be Square." Huey Lewis and the News' punningly titled fourth album is surprisingly good. FORE! is a more mature record than any of the band's previous frat-boy rock platters. FORE! opens with "Jacob's Ladder," co-written by Lewis' golfing buddy Bruce Hornsby just before he became a pop star in his own right. The song is probably the best thing Lewis and the News ever did, and it lends its reflective tone to the rest of the album. Tracks such as "Simple as That" and the doo-wop-like single "Doin' it All for My Baby" amplify the buried R&B influence in the band's music. Overall, FORE! recalls the pub-rockroots of the News' direct precursor, UK-loved '70s country rockers Clover, who backed Elvis Costello on his classic MY AIM IS TRUE. SKU: 1004400

Producers: John Prine, Dan Einstein, Howie Epstein. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. LIVE ON TOUR was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Prine's imaginatively titled second live album shows that the years have not diminished the performing or compositional abilities of this seminal singer-songwriter. LIVE ON TOUR covers the span of his twenty-five year recording career, from early classics like the pot-smokers anthem "Illegal Smile" and the Dylanesque "The Late John Garfield Blues" to D90s material like the wry "Quit Hollerin' At Me." Backed by a crack band, Prine essays the kind of easy-going charm that has made his blend of country, folk and rock come across so well forso long. Prine has the gift of simplicity, coupled with the ability to turn a phrase like nobody's business. This combination makes his heartfelt, often humorous songs powerful without being overbearing. Actually [Remastered]
Pet Shop Boys: Neil Tennant (vocals); Chris Lowe (programming, keyboards). Additional personnel: Andy Richards, Blue Weaver, Gary Moughan, Adrien Cook, J.J. Jeczalik (programming, keyboards). Producers: Julian Mendelsohn, Stephen Hague, David Jacob, Shep Pettibone, Andy Richards. Engineers: Julian Mendelsohn, David Jacob, Dave Meegan. Recorded at Sarm West Studios and Advision Studios, London. Reappraisal is always revealing, whether for good or bad. In the case of this album, the great revelation is the magnificent orchestration, even though it is created by synthesizers and keyboards. 'One More Chance' is blissfully symphonic and the favourite hits are still irritatingly effective. The production is shared between Julian Mendelsohn, David Jacob, Shep Pettibone and Stephen Hague and is mixed to digital perfection. Ultimately this album succeeds in delivering 'pop' exactly as it should be, but played too often it will begin to grate on your friends, as you will endup humming it all day and drive them to despair. Eponymous
EPONYMOUS is a collection of mostly singles. R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar); Mike Mills (keyboards, bass, background vocals); Bill Berry (drums). Producers include: Mitch Easter, R.E.M., Don Dixon, Joe Boyd, Scott Litt. EPONYMOUS collects some of the most popular tunes from R.E.M.'s first decade, some appearing in slightly different versions. Consequently, the album does double duty as a greatest-hitscollection and a repository for rarities that didn't turn up on DEAD LETTER OFFICE. Organized chronologically, EPONYMOUS offers a look at the band's artistic development, from the Byrdsy jangle of the jumpy "Radio Free Europe" to the more laconic, country-tinged "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville)." "Can't Get There From Here" and "Driver 8" are simultaneously more rhythmic and more abstract, while a heavier rock sound is introduced on "The One I Love" and the closing anti-anthem "It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)." EPONYMOUS is an effective overview of the band's early and middle periods, and a chronicle of a fiercely independent band's marriage of commercial and artistic success. SKU: 1000088

Jackie Brown
On the soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino's long awaited follow-up to PULP FICTION, the director again turns to '70s R&B classics, seasoning the mix with a touch of modern pop. As usual, Tarantino proves himself to be quite the soul connoisseur. This disc zeroes in on great old-school cuts like "Natural High" by the criminally underrated Bloodstone and "Inside My Love" by the late Minnie Riperton. Topping things off is a change-of-pace from, of all people, ex-Cars guitarist Elliot Easton and his group Tiki Gods. SKU: 1001577

Red Hot 'n' Rio (Pure Listening Pleasure)
RED HOT + RIO, which raises money for AIDS research and relief, is a tribute to Brazilian bossa nova music. About half the tracks on RED HOT + RIO were written by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The album features collaborations between pop and alternative-rock stars and modern Brazilian musicians whose styles range from cutting edge to conventional. The resulting amalgam of bossa nova, hip-hop, samba, pop and too many other genres to mention makes for an idiosyncratic tribute to Jobim, the late godfather of bossa nova. Highlights include such once-in-a-lifetime alliances as the incomparably soulful Cape Verdean diva Cesaria Evora singing with Brazil's Caetano Veloso, backed by Ryuichi Sakamoto's atmospheric keyboards (on "E Preciso Perdoar");and David Byrne's no-frills vocals converging with Marisa Monte's graceful voice on a Talking Headsy version of Jobim's classic "Waters of March." The lyrics to the latter song are especially poignant and prophetic: "It's a sliver of glass, it is life, it's the sun/It is night, it is death, it's a trap, it's a gun/The oak when it blooms, a fox in the brush/The knot in the wood, the song of a thrush." Music For Babies
Personnel: Howie B. (vocals, keyboards, programming); Jeremy Shaw (strings, keyboards); Jony Rock Star (keyboards, programming); Mat Ducasse. Engineers include: Howie B. Howard Bernstein made his name with production and engineering credits for Soul II Soul, Bjork, Goldie, Tricky, and Massive Attack. Occasional recordings as Skylab (with Matt Ducasse) and Old Scottish solidified his reputation as a beatsmith to be reckoned with. But Howie B. threw a curveball with 1996's MUSIC FOR BABIES, the first album released under his own name. Instead of the high-tech, sample-laden instrumental hiphop that many expected, BABIES was an aqueous, abstract tribute to the soundworld of his newborn daughter,Chilli. The title track's fragile piano-plinking ambience--reminiscent of Brian Eno and Harold Budd--is something of a red herring. BABIES has plenty of beats simmering beneath its limpid atmospheres. There's enough rhythmic drive to propel BABIES into the catchall "triphop" category, but the emphasis is on mood, melody, and mixing finesse. Bernstein layers keys and effects to create drowsy, dreamy textures for the hiphop undercurrents of "Cry," "Allergy," and "Here Comes The Tooth." The vibe-and-trumpet spangled "How To Suckie" and "On The Way" are especially masterful feats of studio legerdemain. Subdued yet seductive, BABIES will charm listeners of all ages. SKU: 1001194

Little Worlds
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones includes: Bela Fleck (banjo); Jeff Coffin (alto & tenor saxophones) Victor Wooten (bass); Future Man. Additional personnel: Derek Trucks, Jerry Douglas, Nickel Creek, Bernie Williams, Sam Bush, Branford Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin, The Chieftains. Includes liner notes by Bela Fleck. Though Bela Fleck's liner notes make it sound like nearly anyone who walked in the studio door was asked to sit in, no musical slouch could keep up with this band of chopsters. The aesthetic soup that Fleck and friends cook up (Bill Monroe meets Weather Report at a world music convention, and that's just the tip of the iceberg) is nothing if not eclectic. And yet, because of the strong compositional sense and the leader's distinctive and breathtaking picking throughout, there is cohesiveness to the proceedings. A large part of the enjoyment of listening to LITTLE WORLDS is the audible quality of fun and daring among the participants--these guys like not only to push the envelope, but to push each other toward new musical insights. This may not be the first album to have theremin, didjeridoo, uillean pipes, cello, and banjo all on one track, but the smart money is on that track to be the most musically viable one of its kind. With remarkably little filler, this generous three-discoffering by the already-prolific Fleck will take the willing listener through many little and exotic worlds indeed. SKU: 1087794
