Palmaccio, Patrick Ryan (Polygram Studios). THE COMPLETE BILLIE HOLIDAY ON VERVE, 1945-1959 won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Recording Package," "Album Notes" and "Historical Album." Very few contemporary artists are worthy of exhaustive, multiple-CD retrospectives, but the jazz legend Billie Holiday certainly makes the cut. This 10-CD set, with a hard-bound, lavishly photographed accompanying book, is a must for serious fans of Lady Day and those with a deep interest in the history of classic jazz. While some buffs contend that it was Holiday's earlier recordings for Columbia and Decca that were her best, manyaficionados find her final recordings during the Verve years to be her richest, most mature and most poignant work. At this point, the heartache in her voice was nearly palpable. The collection--with its multiple takes, rehearsal recordings, transcripts of conversations, interviews with collaborators, live recordings and more--has enough music and history to keep Holiday fans engrossed for years to come. By the mid-1940s, Holiday's many vices had culminated into full-blown heroin addiction, and her voice--the unique instrument that made her a legend--was beginning to suffer along with her weakened body. But Verve's fine roster of legendary jazzmen--both up-and-comers like Barney Kessel and Oscar Peterson, and aging masters like Ben Webster--bolstered her singing with their sympa SKU: 5059008

Peter Gabriel Vol.4 [SACD]
SECURITY was released in some editions asthe fourth Peter Gabriel album entitled simply PETER GABRIEL. Personnel: Peter Gabriel (vocals, keyboards, drums, Linn programming, CMI, Ethiopian pipes); David Rhodes (guitar, background vocals, Ethiopian pipes); John Ellis (guitar); Roberto Laneri (treated saxophone); Peter Hammill (Ethiopian pipes); Larry Fast, David Lord (keyboards); Tony Levin (bass, Chapman Stick); Jerry Marotta (drums); Ekone Dance Company (Ghanian drums); Morris Pert (timbales, percussion); Stephen Paine (CMI); Jill Gabriel (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. SECURITY picks up on the structural advances made on Gabriel's previous album (the third of his untitled solo recordings), by combining his creepy, quirky, post-art rock leanings with Third World-rhythmic patterns. A successful fusion of the modern (synths, heavily-processed guitars) and the ancient (tribal rhythms, lyrical themes that reach into the ancestral memories of various cultures), SECURITY was both Gabriel's most sophisticated and most accessible work to date. Infectious, funky rhythms allow mega-hit "Shock The Monkey" and the propulsive "Kiss Of Life" to transcend Gabriel's more cerebral tendencies, exploring the visceral end of things. While there's a celebratory feel to much of the music here, tunes like "The Rhythm of the Heat" reach back to the darker, ominous tone of Gabriel's last album, but throughout SECURITY, Gabriel sounds like a man who's been liberated from the constraints of his old habits, dancing up a storm without ever losing sight of his conceptual/thematic goals. Nighthawks At The Diner
Personnel: Tom Waits (vocals, guitar, piano); Pete Christlieb (tenor saxophone); Mike Melvoin (piano); Jim Hughart (bass); Bill Goodwin (drums). Recorded at the Record Plant, Hollywood, California on July 30 & 31, 1975. A major part ofTom Waits's mystique has always been his complex, intriguing persona; part Bukowski-esque barfly poet, part Kerouac-inspired hipster, part Hoagy Carmichael troubadour. Nowhere has that persona been more fully utilized than on NIGHTHAWKS AT THE DINER. Throughout the album waits unfurls his colorful, charismatic, artfully amplified personality. It's like spending the evening with a lounge lizard/raconteur/beatnik standup comic who also happens to compose strikingly beautiful tunes that could have come from the Great American Songbook if not for their lyrical quirkiness. Though it would be a few more years before Waits would reinvent himself on SWORDFISHTROMBONES, the character who stomps through your brain on NIGHTHAWKS with both guns blazing is as original and impressive a character as you could want. Angel Band
Personnel: Emmylou Harris (vocals, guitar); Vince Gill (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Emory Gordy (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Jackson (vocals, guitar); Mike Aldridge, Jerry Douglas (dobro); Mark O'Connor (fiddle, viola, mandola). Engineers include: Donivan Cowart, Joe Scaif, Paul Goldberg. Recorded at The Barn, Brentwood, Tennessee and The Music Mill, Nashville, Tennessee. On this 1987 recording, Emmylou Harris focuses on country ballads with a Christian bent. Many traditional songs arranged by Harris are heard here, including "If I Be Lifted Up," "Bright Morning Stars," "We Shall Rise," "Drifting Too Far," and the title track, "Angel Band." Songs by Paul Kennerly and Ralph and Carter Stanley are also featured. Lyrically, the songs on ANGEL BAND revolve around the pursuit of redemption, forgiveness, and joy in a world of heartbreak and loss. Musically, the group, consisting of country greats Vince Gill, Jerry Douglas, and Mark O'Connor among others, is sensitive, subtle and melodically compelling. The highlight of the albumis the uplifting "When They Ring Those Golden Bells," which features fine instrumental work in addition to Harris's beautiful vocal performance. SKU: 1003020

Loaded (The Fully Loaded Edition)
LOADED (THE FULLY LOADED EDITION) is a greatly expanded version of the Velvet Underground's 1970 album LOADED. Disc 1 includes the original album along with outtakes, demos and alternate mixes. Disc 2 - the "Alternate Album" - repeats the sequence of songs from the original album using demos and alternate versions, and adds more demos and outtakes from the same sessions. The Velvet Underground: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica); Doug Yule (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, bass, drums, percussion); Maureen "Moe" Tucker (vocals, percussion); Sterling Morrison (guitar). Additional personnel: Tommy Castanaro, Bill Yule, Adrian Barber (percussion). Producers: Geoffrey Haslam, Shel Kagan, The Velvet Underground, Adrian Barber. Reissue producers: Bill Inglot, Patrick Milligan. Principally recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, New York in spring and summer 1970. Originally released on Cotillion (9034). INcludes liner notes by David Fricke. LOADED was a fitting end for the mighty Velvet Underground. Lou Reed had penned an album seemingly loaded with hits, but by now, fourLPs into the Velvets' career, a sad few record buyers appreciated the band. After recording the album, Reed called it quits and crawled to his parents' home in the suburbs--the ultimate anti-rock statement. Resignation permeates the album. Reed's voice is noticeably ragged, and bassist Doug Yule ended up recording many of the vocals for the final mix. Drummer Moe Tucker was pregnant, and Yule's brother Billy sat in on drums for most of the LOADED sessions, further alienating Reed from the already disintegrating band. This was no longer the art-rock Velvet Underground, but a far more accessible version, relying on Reed's songwriting over the band's overall musicality. Accordingly, the songs are either retreats into the faux innocence of parental ideals ("Head Held High"), or autobiographical pieces of teenage rebellion ("Sweet Jane"). "Rock & Roll," for instance, reads like text-book angst, where everything your parents do is, well, "it ain't happening at all." The album appropriately sounds like Reed's final bit of energy for the band. There's the saddened tone of "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'," in which the heroes walk with their "head[s] down," and "New Age," in which they mingle with "over the hill" movie stars. LOADED closed a chapter in Lou Reed's chronicles, and solidified the Velvet Underground's significant niche in rock history. SKU: 5060145

Manna
lso out of print on CD on Rhino (73504) - D01. Bread: David Gates, James Griffin, Robb Royer, Mike Botts. Producers: David Gates, James Griffin, Robb Royer. Recorded at Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California. Originally released on Elektra (74086). Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso. Bread's third album, 1971's MANNA, is in many ways similar to its predecessor, ON THE WATERS. Same production team, same Crosby Stills Nash and Young-meet-the Association musical style, even a similar bread-related pun for the title; in other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. David Gates, James Griffin, Robb Royer and Mike Botts had, by this point in their career, come up with a brilliant amalgam of folk-rock, Carpenters-style soft pop and glossy production that isa textbook example of the sort of soft rock which ruled the charts on the early-to-mid-'70s. MANNA's biggest hit, Gates' "If," is a classic of the style and one of the group's trademark songs. The rest of this solidly engaging record is equally enticing for those into this sort of thing, especially the opening "Let Your Love Go" and Griffiths' wistful "She Was My Lady." SKU: 1015518

Spaghetti Incident, The
Guns N' Roses: W. Axl Rose (vocals, keyboards); Duff McKagan (guitar, bass, drums, background vocals); Slash (guitar, background vocals); Gilby Clarke (guitar); Dizzy Reed (keyboards, background vocals); Matt Sorum (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Michael Monroe (vocals); Mike Staggs, Richard Duguay, Carlos Booy (guitar); Mike Fasano (percussion); Eddie Huletz, Rikki Rachtman, S.C. Bailey, Blake Stanton, Eric Mills (background vocals). Producers: Mike Clink, Guns N' Roses, Duff McKagan, Jim Mitchell. THE SPAGHETTI INCIDENT? is part of the Geffen Goldline Series. The last official studio recording of the '90s for Guns 'N' Roses was 1993's THE SPAGHETTI INCIDENT?. This collection of mostly punk covers was released at a time when G'N'R was reeling from both internal dissension (founding member Izzy Stradlin left after the release of USE YOUR ILLUSION I & II) and the great grunge explosion of 1991 that made the band seem passe. Rather than jumping on any bandwagons, the California quintet instead paid homage to heroes overlooked by kids caught up in buying the right kind of flannel. Leading the charge was bassist Duff McKagan (who'd played with almost 30 Seattle bands including the Fartz and Fastbacks), G'N'R recorded scorching covers of songs by Fear ("I Don't Care About You"), the New York Dolls ("Human Being"), and the Damned ("New Rose"). New guitarist Gilby Clarke provided a solid foil for Slash as Axl Rose crooned doo-wop (The Skyliner's"Since I Don't Have You") and sang with a faux British accent (UK Subs' "Down on the Farm"). Being Guns 'N' Roses meant controversy was never far behind and this time around the boys were criticized for including a hidden cover of Charles Manson's "Look At Your Game Girl." SKU: 1019939

All World
Personnel includes: LL Cool J, Boyz II Men. Producers include:Rick Rubin, LL Cool J, Marley Marl, QD III. LL Cool J is an unimpeachably important figure in the history of hip-hop. He has weathered all the trends and fashions in the rap world over the last decade. ALL WORLD is a long overdue greatest-hits collection that makes a strong case for LL as one of the most consistent and innovative figures in rap, pre-dating the Death Row crew and eschewing the pimp/gangsta image that has weighed down too many rap albums in the '90s. The infectious groove of "Rock The Bells" sets the tone, finding LL rocking the mic with an inimitable authority. "I Need Love" changes the pace and shows his emotional range, with lyrics that show a romantic sensitivity uncommon among rappers. "Jingling Baby" and "The Boomin' System" showcase LL doing what he does best, creating a lively party atmosphere with irresistibly funky rhythm tracks. "Mama Said Knock You Out" makes it plain that LL is more than just a party boy, with a fierce, aggressive rap that sounds as fresh as the day it was released. This is an essential document of rap's past and present, and maybe even a hint of its future. SKU: 1001976

Space Jam
Full title: Music From And Inspired By The Space Jam Motion Picture. Producers: Seal, Brian Dobbs "The Wino", Jay "Ski" McGowan, Poke And Tone, C.C. Lemonhead, D'Angelo, David Foster, Rashad Smith, Armando Colon, Todd Terry, Lou Adler, Jamey Jaz, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, R. Kelly, Danny Kortchmar, Peter Denenberg, Dominique Trenier, Dominic Owen. Engineers: Tim Weidner, C.C. Lemonhead, Leonard Jackson, Stephen George, Russell Elevado, Felipe Elgueta, Carl Nappa, Greg Thompson, Bill Klatt, Matthias Heilbronn, John Vann-Est, Steve Hodge, Chris Brickley, Peter Denenberg, Rob Reeney, Carl Nappa. "I Believe I Can Fly" won the 1998 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television, and was nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. "Fly Like An Eagle" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Space Jam" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. The movie sets Michael Jordan in the midst of an animated basketball team made up of classic Looney Toons characters. The soundtrack finds some equally unlikely settings for rap, soul and hip-hop songs and their singers. Among the inspired covers here are Seal's smooth, funky take on Steve Miller's classic-rock chestnut "Fly Like An Eagle"; the Spin Doctors' spin on "That's The Way (I Like It)" (on which they're joined by rapper Biz Markie);and a hilarious remake of Cheech & Chong's comedy classic "Basketball Jones" by Barry White and a fast-talking Chris Rock. Bugs Bunny provides a straightforward rap track, "Buggin'," with the help of Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. The soundtrack, like the film, is full of energy and silliness, but there are moments of genuine sweetness: All-4-One's earnest and soulful "I Turn To You" and R. Kelly's gospel-inspired "I Can Fly." Abandonship
Personnel: Dave Kerman (varios instruments); Deborah Perry (vocals); Udi Koomran. Multi-instrumentalist Dave Kerman has provided percussive support forso many other avant-garde outfits (Thinking Plague, Present, etc.) that it's difficult to imagine where he's found the time to maintain his own career as the heart and soul of 5uu's. As usual, ABANDONSHIP is mostly Kerman's show, and the breadth of his vision continues to impress. The album was recorded from 2000-01 in Israel and the strife in that war-torn land is evident in Kerman's compositions. Kerman's keyboards, guitars, and drums draw on jazz, rock, and the kind of dark, politically charged, Henry Cow/Magman-inspired that came to be defined as Rock In Opposition. The tension of Mid-Eastern conflict is evoked by discordant harmonic landscapes, clashing, disjointed rhythms, and occasionally the voice of Deborah Perry, singing Kerman-penned lyrics that deal with the nature of conflict. ABANDONSHIP isn't something you simply listen to, it's something you experience, the sonic equivalent of a global event, which is quite fitting for such a socially minded artist. SKU: 1073366

Balance
Van Halen: Sammy Hagar (vocals); Edward Van Halen (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Alex Van Halen (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: The Monks Of Gyuro Tantric University (vocals). "The Seventh Seal" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. What happens when rowdy rockers get older? Hopefully, if they're like Eddie, Sammy and the boys, they can achieve a BALANCE between the fire from their youth and the more serious demands of maturing rock stars. The struggle for BALANCE is apparent in songs about strained relationships, drugs and greed. The topics of Sammy's lyrics range from personal turmoil ("I need a change, I need it quick before it makes me sick...I don't like what I've been told I'm feelin'") to apocalyptic doom ("Broken now I can't help but feel someone cracked the seventh seal"). However, the band still kicks when Sammy shouts about the virtues of drugs andavarice in "Amsterdam" and "Big Fat Money." Supporting this are Eddie's familiar warm tones and Alex's big-footed stomp. Tune into "Amsterdam" to hear Eddie's goofy, bearded grin, and that good-feelin' Van Halen rock. Yet although they offer three instrumental tracks, they no longer flaunt unbridled talent just because it's there. Instead of using songs as mere vehicles for instrumental pyrotechnics, the Van Halen virtuosity has been balanced out to serve the song, and it's a fine BALANCE. SKU: 1005014

Includes liner notes by Bob Belden. QUIET NIGHTS, the fourth Columbia collaboration between Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans, has the reputation of being an inconsequential patchwork of unfinished charts and snippets. Truncated though it might be (the original LP clocked in under 30 minutes), the resulting album is a brilliant (and satisfying) Brazilian-flavored blend of pop and jazz, including slow, darkly melodic versions of Jobim's "Corcovado" and Michel Legrand's "Once Upon A Summertime." This remastered CD reissue also includes an unfinished 13-minute suite called "The Time Of The Barracudas," originally written for the theater, and a successfully spliced together experiment inthe "third-stream." Featuring Birds
Quasi: Sam Coomes, Janet Weiss (various instruments). Additional personnel: Charlie Campbell (guitar). Recorded at Jackpot Studio, Portland, Oregon in December 1997. A duo of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss (who also drums in the acclaimed Olympia punk band Sleater-Kinney), Quasi is one of the most unique bands in the late 90's indie scene. Most of their songs find Coomes on keyboards and lead vocals and Weiss behind the drums, although both take turns on guitar. Their songs belong to the winsome pop tradition epitomized by Badfinger, yet most of them don't have choruses and are generally over in two minutes. Even the title mocks the notion ofhit songs--"Birds" is just a short track of birds whistling. What's perhaps most striking about FEATURING "BIRDS" is its despairing and sarcastic worldview. It's peppered with lines like "Life is dull, life is gray/At best it's just okay/But I'm happy to report/Life is also short." Suicide, the oppression of work, failure and broken romance are also recurring themes. Weiss' drumming is impressive and much more varied than her playing in Sleater-Kinney. The two harmonize together well, almost sweetly at times, making for ironic distance from the bitterness of the lyrics. This is a bleak and intelligent record that should make Quasi as well regarded as Elliott Smith, Modest Mouse, and their other Pacific Northwest contemporaries. SKU: 1061478

Album
The LP version of this release was called ALBUM. The cassette version was called CASSETTE. Public Image Ltd. includes: John Lydon (vocals); Nicky Skopelitis (guitar); Bill Laswell (bass); Tony Williams (drums). Additional personnel: Tony Thompson (drums). Public Image Limited's eighth album takes no prisoners, opening with crunching chords and John Lydon's snarling in "FFF." Releasedin a generic blue-and-white sleeve--each format titled accordingly--this is arguably PIL's most consistently successful album. "Rise" is an amazing piece of work and a high point in the band's career. Lydon's lyrics about torture in South Africa afford him the opportunity to use all of his vocal tricks--from his patented warble to angry shouting. He even sings(!) on the great chorus. The musical backing highlights big-beat drumming, ringing guitar, and an agile, fluid bassline. Production assistance from Bill Laswell does two important things for the band's sound. It gives weight to the rhythm section and also adds harshness to the guitars, making them more suited to Lydon's caustic vocals. "Ease" experiments with the drone of the didgeridoo. "Home" is a crashing rock song that, while proclaiming "Better days will never be," manages to suggest that righteous anger can be a force for change. This is a classic album by a band with a history of uniformly fine material. SKU: 1003660

On Through The Night
DefLeppard: Joe Elliott (vocals); Pete Willis, Steve Clark (guitar); Rick Savage (bass); Rick Allen (drums). Additional personnel: Chris M. Hughes (synthesizer). Recorded at Startling Studios, Ascot, England in December 1979. After spending a few years honing their chops playing bars in England, the members of Def Leppard released their first full-length album, ON THROUGH THE NIGHT, in 1980. Though the young band (all the members were either in their early 20s or still teenagers) was an exciting live draw, on record, Def Leppard was still finding its sound. ON THROUGH THE NIGHT shows that the group had great promise, and that its chief influences (Judas Priest, AC/DC, and especially Led Zeppelin), are easily detectable. There's also a palpable excitement that comes across from a band recording its first album. ON THROUGH THE NIGHT does not contain any hit singles that are still played on rock radio today (as the group's future releases PYROMANIA and HYSTERIA would), but it remains one of the band's most straightforward release. Although some of the material gets bogged down in cliches ("Rock Brigade," "Rocks Off," "Wasted," etc.), tracks such as "Hello America" and "Overture" contain soaring vocal harmonies and evidence the melodic rock direction that the band would soon take to the top. ON THROUGH THE NIGHT was produced by Judas Priest producer Tom Allom. On future releases, producer Mutt Lange, the "sixth Leppard," sculpted the band's sound. SKU: 1003491

Korn
Korn: Brian (vocals, guitar); Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipes); J. Munky Shaffer (guitar, background vocals); Fieldy (bass, background vocals); David (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Judith Kiener (vocals). Recorded at Indigo Ranch Studios, Malibu, California. "Shoots And Ladders" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. "Are you readyyyy?!" With that question--an inquiry that begins as a growl and ends as a scream--Jonathan Davis provides a fitting beginning to this searing collection of relentless, metallicized thrash/funk. His question is well-posed; this is not music for the faint of heart. Producer Ross Robinson and Korn have found a formula that works: start with a layer of fuzz-soaked guitar, add some big beats, and finish the whole construct off with a healthy dose of Davis's tortured vocals. This is dark music, scary music. It's also occasionally funky music. "Ball Tongue," with its stop/start syncopation, tinny guitar whine, and stripped-down-to-the-boneverse, is a perfect encapsulation of the Korn style. The track also contains a trace of (gasp!) Hip-Hop flavor, but you won't be hearing this L.A. quartet on the dance floor any time soon. Their assault is severe, fueled with explosive bursts of guitar a la Metallica, as well as frenetic tempo changes reminiscent of Faith No More. The themes are frustration, alienation, pain, explored the way a bulldozer might peruse a patch of daisies. Through songs like "Divine," where guitar and drums intertwine to form a sinewy, intricate rhythmic pulse, and "Fake," in which Davis's voice alternates between a dreamy sing-song and a demonic roar, Korn amply displays both their musicianship and their rage. But the disc's most startling moment is the last. "Daddy," in which the farthest reaches of human cruelty and depravity are held up and judged by an abused child, begins with a haunting surprise--and ends in an emotional meltdown, a final purge, with Davis sobbing, screaming, "You ruined my life!" Korn exorcises their demons the only way they know how--with music. SKU: 1001944

Strangers In The Night
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle. Includes liner notes by Stan Cornyn. If there's one thing the career of Frank Sinatra has shown, it's that great taste is indeed timeless. In the post-Beatles Sixties, it had begun to look like Sinatra's star was falling. The revitalized world of rock music knocked Sinatra's style of popular song squarely out of the box in terms of public interest. The level of Sinatra's artistry, however, neverdiminished during this period, and it wasn't long before he made his commercial comeback with STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT. Powered by the monster hit that was the title song, this album conveyed the image of a successful artist feeling his oats, as they say. With soulmate Nelson Riddle grasping the conductor's baton, Sinatra turned in a bouncy, invigorating set of tunes that smacked of a newfound maturity but sacrificed none of his youthful verve. The bold, swinging "Summer Wind" remains a testament to Sinatra's interpretive powers and infectious enthusiasm for a well-written song. SKU: 1018122

Better Days
Personnel includes: JOE, Shaggy, The Boys Choir Of Harlem. Producers: JOE, Allstar, The Neptunes. BETTER DAYS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album. "Let's Stay Home Tonight" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. R&B love man Joe (if you need to write him a check, his last name is Thomas) spent a fair part of the '90s working a number of variations on the romantic soul crooning style that makes women of all ages blush at 100 paces. He's known for his sensual vocals and lush, smooth R&B production. That hasn't changed on BETTER DAYS, as Joe seems to still be the original smoothie, laying down heartfelt evocations of love and lust with skill and verve. But the lyrical subject matter is a bit wider than on Joe's previous albums, as he takes on larger social issues (witness the collaborationwith Shaggy and the Boys Choir of Harlem on "Ghetto Child" for example). Despite the broadened thematic material, though, Joe never gets too high-minded to leave behind the likes of the undeniably carnal "I Like Sexy Girls." And the sexy girls undoubtedly reciprocate. Concert, The (Live At The Royal Albert Hall)
Creedence Clearwater Revival: John Fogerty (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Tom Fogerty (guitar, background vocals); Stu Cook (bass, background vocals); Doug Clifford (drums). Recorded at the Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California on January 31, 1970. Includes liner note by Stanley Booth. Digitally remastered utilizing the 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System by Shigeo Miyamoto (JVC Studios). Creedence Clearwater Revival is widely regarded as one of the most electric and exhilarating live rock & roll acts of all-time, and 1980's THE CONCERT is one of rock's finest live albums.Originally released as LIVE AT THE ALBERT HALL 1970, the album was quickly recalled and re-titled THE CONCERT when it became known that the concert was in fact recorded live at the Oakland Coliseum in California, not at England's famous Albert Hall. Nonetheless, you couldn't ask for more from a live Creedence disc--at nearly an hour in length, it represents all of the hits (as well as a few key album tracks), and the selections all shine in a live setting. An opening rendition of the swamp-rock classic "Born on the Bayou" shows the band slowing the tempo a bit, creating a killer groove in the process. Soon you realize how many timeless classics John Fogerty and company created--"Green River," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Proud Mary," and "Down on the Corner" are all prime CCR. In a live setting, the anti-Vietnam "Fortunate Son" is even more venomous than the studio take, while the nine-minute jamfest "Keep on Chooglin'" closes the album on a high note. SKU: 1007290

Avengers And Other Top Sixties TV Themes, The
Presenting itself as the ultimate kitsch '60s collection, this album contains works by definitive soundtrack artists such as Tony Hatch, Cyril Stapleton, and Laurie Johnson. Covering a plethora of TV themes (as the title indicates) these soundtracks span a decade of drama, sport, cartoon, and soap opera, and will evoke images that appeal to the nostalgic, as well as the kitsch affiliate. The main purpose of this album isto accompany theme nights, fancy dress parties, and boozing sessions, rather than to be taken entirely seriously. The value for money of the 60 tracks makes up for any discrepancies or omissions in the overall package. SKU: 1006510

Come Home With Me
Personnel includes: Cam'Ron, Juelz Santana, Daz Dillinger, Jimmy Jones, Jay-Z, Freekey Zekey, Kay Slay, McGruff, Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel (rap vocals); Tiffany (vocals); Just Blaze (vinyl scratches). Producers include: Ty Fyffe, Just Blaze, Precision, Ray Watkins, LeLan Robinson. Engineers include: Eric "Ibo" Butler, Gimel "Young Guru" Keaton, Mike T. Recorded at Sony, Baseline, New York, New York; Sweet Mountain Studios, Englewood, New Jersey. "Oh Boy" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. Cam'ron hasbeen around the block a few times, having worked with Puff Daddy, Notorious B.I.G., and Ol' Dirty Bastard in his time. He's obviously learned a few things from these rap masters, as well as from bitter personal experience, as evidenced by the hygiene lesson of "On Fire Tonight," which is all about condoms, and the wearing of them, in explicit situations. The Harlem rapper's third CD is full of gritty lessons in street life as well as instructions in sexual etiquette, and cuts such as "Welcome to New York City" function both as bravado and warning shots to the unwary. The production is a mix of '70s and '80s samples and brutally simple, down-and-dirty beats, giving the whole enterprise a grainy feel that's a world away from the big-pimpin' efforts of many of Cam'rons peers. Despite his classy pedigree, the rapper is obviously devoted to keeping it real, as shown by the list of his needs and wants in "I Just Wanna." And you won't find a better document of a thug's night out in New York City than is contained within the horn-sample-heavy "Boy Boy." SKU: 1072429

Flaming Pie
Personnel includes: Paul McCartney (vocals, 6- & 12-string acoustic guitars, electric guitar, Spanish guitar, piano, Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Mellotron, Hammond organ, harpsichord, harmonium, vibraphone, acoustic & electric basses, drums, percussion); Steve Miller (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Jeff Lynne (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, electric harpischord, background vocals); James McCartney (electric guitar); Chris "Snake" Davis (saxophone); Dave Bishop (baritone saxophone); Kevin Robinson (trumpet); Michael Thompson,Richard Bissill, Richard Watkins, John Pigneguy (French horn); Ringo Starr (drums, percussion, background vocals); Linda McCartney (background vocals). Producers: George Martin, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney. Engineers: Geoff Emerick, Jon Jacobs, Bob Kraushaar. Includes liner notes by Paul McCartney, Mark Lewisohn and Geoff Baker. FLAMING PIE was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. Explaining how the Beatles got their name, John Lennon once wrote, "A Man appeared on a flaming pie and said unto them 'From this day on, you are Beatles with an 'A.'" Paul McCartney obviously has the Beatles on his mind on his first album since the BEATLES ANTHOLOGY blitz, and, as the title suggests, he's also keeping a healthy sense of humor about it. The songs on FLAMING PIE include a couple of quintessential Paul love ballads; some perky, Everly Brothers-style pop-rock; a stab at Aretha Franklin soul balladry of the sort the Beatles might well have tried in their later days; a screaming R&B throwaway that emerged from a jam with Ringo Starr; and, what the heck, a Texas blues number that features Paul and not-even-close-to-a-Beatle Steve Miller trading vocal lines. Some tunes feature Paul solo; others find him and Beatles disciple Jeff Lynne sharing the instruments and production. A couple add sweet orchestrations by Beatles producer George Martin, and one features Paul's son James on lead guitar. It's a little bitta this and a little bitta that--sometimes silly, as on the title cut, which is a barrage of John Lennonesque nonsense lines, and sometimes touching, as on the acoustic love ballads "Somedays" and "Calico Skies." The former faintly echoes the melody of the Beatles' "For No One"; the latter is as unabashed (and un-silly) a love song as McCartney has ever written. SKU: 1006816

Blow Up Your Video [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Simon Wright (drums). Recorded at Studio Miraval, Le Val,France. Originally released on Atlantic (81828). Includes liner notes by Alan Di Perna. In the late '80s, with bands like Guns N' Roses finding stardom with stripped-down, loud rock & roll, AC/DC couldn't have picked a better time to release BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO. The album found an extremely receptive U.S. audience, and was the band's first record to reach the top 10 since FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK WE SALUTE YOU. And while it wasn't as consistent as some of the band's classic releases, BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO was easily one of the best hard rock/heavy metal releases of that time. "That's the Way I Wanna Rock N Roll" was an instant AC/DC classic, and the raging "Heatseeker" became an eventual concert staple. Other tracks like "Go Zone," "Kissin' Dynamite," and "Some Sin for Nuthin'" were standouts as well. BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO proved to be drummer Simon Wright's final album with the band (he would leave after the ensuing tour to join Dio). BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO set the stage perfectly for AC/DC's next album, the blockbuster THE RAZOR'S EDGE. SKU: 1084959

Dark Island
Sixth album from Birmingham indie-pop outfit, following their 2001 compilation 'Somniloquy'.
