El Oso
Soul Coughing: Mark De Gli Antoni, M. Doughty, Yuval Gabay, Sebastian Steinberg. Additional personnel: Chris Rock. Producers: Tchad Blake, Soul Coughing, Optical, Pat Dillet. Engineers: Tchad Blake, Optical, Pat Dillet, Mark De Gli Antoni. Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory and Magic Hotel, Hollywood, California; The Looking Glass Studios, New York, New York. EL OSO is a combination of guitar rock, funky drumming and innovative lyrics. Throughout, Soul Coughing places superb pop melodies on top of cutting-edge rhythm tracks. "Circles" has plenty of what has made the group a fan favorite. Catchy guitar hooks and cool drumbeats make the mid-tempo toe-tapper stick in your head after only one listen. Although the albumis sprinkled with bright pop textures at times, the majority of EL OSO is a bit dark, though interesting. Tracks like "St. Louise Is Listening," "$300" and "Monster Man" show the band's diversity as songwriters and producers, continually hitting the mark they aim for. "Houston" boasts an analog synthesizer melody reminiscent of Gary Numan's "Cars." Other tracks that stand out on this strong release are "Rolling," "Misinformed" and "The Incumbent." SKU: 1005450

Movies For The Blind [PA]
Performers: Chris "Cage" Palko, Copywrite, Mr. Eon (rap vocals); Clare (vocals); Free (variousinstruments); Verve Isaacs (bass); Riz (DJ). Producers include: DJ Mighty, Camu Tao, Rush, The Ghetto Pros, J-Zone. Rap upstart Cage is a member of the notoriously nasty hip-hop trio known as the Smut Peddlers, but even that group's ultra-skanky attitude seems like a stroll through Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood when compared with Cage's solo work. There's been a well-publicized rivalry in the hip-hop underground between Cage and Eminem over who's the premier sociopathic Caucasian MC. If you want authentic psycho scenarios, though, Cage is undoubtedly your man. Unlike Eminem, who simply acts crazy, Cage is truly messed up in the head, having allegedly spent time in a mental institution (which he raps about here). This is some of the most unrepentantly misanthropic, downright dangerous-sounding stuff you'll come across. Even Onyx probably crosses to the other side when they see this guy coming down the street. MOVIES FOR THE BLIND is definitely not for the faint-hearted, but fans of Eminem should definitely be intrigued. SKU: 1079243

Rock 'n' Roll Heart
Personnel: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar, piano); Marty Fogel (saxophone); Michael Fonfara (piano, organ, Clavinet, ARP synthesizer); Bruce Yaw (bass); Michael Suchorsky (drums); Garland Jeffreys (background vocals). Producer: Lou Reed. Reissue producer:Rob Santos. Recorded at Record Plant, New York, New York in 1976. Originally released on Arista (4100). Includes liner notes by Timothy & Karin Greenfield-Sanders. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Buddha Records' Original Masters series. This sequel to CONEY ISLAND BABY finds Lou Reed in an equally mellow mood. The songs are mostly gentle, jazzy things, heavy on acoustic guitar, electric piano, and sax. There are exceptions, of course. "Banging on My Drum," whose title is fully half of the song's lyric, is a three-chord rocker with Lou gone electric. Had the drumming been a little less conventional, this one could have passed for a Velvet Underground outtake. Also noteworthy are "Chooser and the Chosen One," an odd sort of R&B instrumental; "Follow the Leader," which appears to be Reed's version of '70s funk; and "Sheltered Life," in which Reed sings "I've never done drugs"-and, presumably, his nose does not grow. Naked Songs
Personnel: Rickie Lee Jones (vocals, guitar, piano); Rob Wasserman (bass). An intimate glimpse into an evening with Rickie Lee Jones, NAKED SONGS spotlights her talents as a singer, songwriter and musician, baring her songs in front of an adoring and appreciative audience. The concept is refreshing: just vocals and guitar or piano, with Rob Wasserman on bass for the last two tunes. And it is very revealing. It's not as if Jones' gifts were ever suffocated by fancy arrangements or obscured by production, but hearing these songs undressed of extra accompaniment and frill reaffirms their artistic strength--and her musical beauty. Admittedly, one of the attractions to Rickie Lee Jones has been the charm and economy of her arrangements. She accompanies herself with just the right--yet not the most expected--instrumentation, always appropriate to the essence of song or story. NAKED SONGS emphasizes this gift of excellent taste. Each track reveals her talent as a songstress. Her voice ranges from a high, lilting slur--softly and sweetly imparting poignant lyrics through a memorable melody, with a melancholy smile--to an acerbicforce contorting its way around the obstacle of what it has to say. As for the accompaniment, Jones can treat her guitar with subtle tenderness ("Flying Cowboys"), use it to provide a gentle prodding motion ("Young Blood"), keep it rhythmic and busy ("Weasel And The White Boys Cool"), or make it strong and loud (the bridge of "It Must Be Love"). On some songs she plays piano, using it effectively as minimal support on "Coolsville." Whatever the means, the end is always a good song, painted with care, beautiful in its naked simplicity. Complete At Newport
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Ray Nance (vocals, trumpet); Jimmy Grisson (vocals); Russell Procope (alto saxophone, clarinet); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone); John Cook, Clark Terry, William "Cat" Anderson (trumpet); John Sanders, Quentin Jackson, Britt Woodman (trombone); Jimmy Woode (bass); Sam Woodyard (drums). Producer: George Avakian. Reissue producer: Phil Schaap. Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 7, 1956. Includes liner notes by George Avakian and Phil Schaap. Digitally remastered by Phil Schaap (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). What makes this classic recording endure is the monumental level of intensity the band brings to each number. Ellington, in speaking of the band's competitive nature, recalled that they were all in a particularly fesity mode for this performance. That crackling energy translates to every number, and even extended to Count Basie's original drummer Jo Jones, who sat grinning from ear to ear in the front row, so moved by the swing of it all that he beat time for the band with a rolled up copy of The Christian Science Monitor. From Johnny Hodges' ultra-suave "Jeep's Blues," to Paul Gonsalves' epic tenor marathon on "Diminuendo And Crescendo In Blue" (which set the crowd to dancing and screaming), ELLINGTON AT NEWPORT is one of the really great big band recordings. Four Calendar Cafe
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Simon Raymonde (bass). Additional personnel: Ben Blakeman, Mitsuo Tate (guitar). Recorded at September Sound, London, England. FOUR-CALENDAR CAFE is the Cocteau Twins' eighth album. It's also their first since the Twins left 4AD feeling constrained by their long-time label's signature sound. That said, FOUR-CALENDAR CAFE could only be a Cocteau Twins album. The Twins make no major changes in their trademark ethereal sound here. They do, however, make two minor adjustments. Firstly, Robin Guthrie utilizes more acoustic guitar and doesn'trely quite as much on his bag of guitar effects as he did on earlier records. And Elizabeth Fraser sings in consistent and recognizable English for the first time in the Twin's catalogue. These alterations notwithstanding, CAFE is still as steeped in fluid atmospheres and airy textures as anything in the Twins' past. Standouts include "Bluebeard," which rides on waves of gentle slide guitar and Fraser's soaring vocals (she is probably the only person on Earth who could sing "are you the right man for me? or you toxic for me?" and make it sound otherworldly). "Theft, and Wandering Around Lost" comes closest to replicating the band's sound, circa-1985. "Squeeze-Wax" features a shimmering, light-reflecting-off-water quality just under its surface, and-believe it or not-"Summerhead" kinda rocks(!). SKU: 1004636

Blackheart Man [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Bunny Wailer (vocals, acoustic guitar, jawharp, bass, drums, bongos, timbales, percussion); Karl Pitterson (acoustic guitar, sound effects); Peter Tosh (guitar, harmonica, melodica, background vocals); Aston "Family Man" Barrett (guitar, keyboards, bass); Earl "Chinna" Smith, Eric Frater, M. Murray (guitar); Tommy McCook (flute, saxophone); Bobby Ellis, Herman Marquis (horns); Tyrone "Organ D" Downie (melodica, keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Carlton "Candy" Barrett (drums); Willy Pep (bongos); Larry McDonald (congas); Neville Garrick (percussion); Bunny Wailer (sound effects); Bob Marley (background vocals). Recorded at Aquarius Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Originally released on Island (9415). Includes liner notes by Jean Fairweather. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Island Records "Reggae Classics" series. Following Bunny Wailer's 1973 departure from the Wailers, he spent three years retired in the Jamaican countryside before returning to the recording studio. The result was the triumphant BLACKHEART MAN, an essential album for any serious reggae collection. Backing Wailer were a number of legendary Jamaican musicians including the Barrett Brothers (Carlton and Aston), Robbie Shakespeare, Skatalite Tommy McCook and former bandmates Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Although the original Wailers trioharmonizes on one of their old numbers ("Dreamland"), it's Tosh who contributes the most by playing a number of instruments. The fiery singer's contributions include sinewy melodica on the mesmerizing "Amagideon (Armagedon)" and harmonica on "Bide Up," a remake of an early Wailers single. Staying true to the righteousness of his Rastafarian faith, Wailer composed a number of songs addressing the afterlife ("Reincarnated Souls"), poverty ("Fighting Against Convictions") and injustice ("The Oppressed Song"). It's easy to hear the influence of American R&B in the swaying horns and chugging rhythms. Wailer's gorgeous tenor wraps itself around the optimistic "This Train," a song Curtis Mayfield might have written had he grown up in Kingston rather than Chicago. SKU: 1074755

Producers include: James "Groove" Chambers, Mike City, Carlos "Six July" Broady, Trackboyz, Brian Kidd. "Po' Folks" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. This six-strong hip-hop crew may hail from the country, but don't expect to hear Nelly Revisited or Bubba Sparxxx Reduxxx from Nappy Roots. They manage to combine their organic, Kentucky vibe with sophisticated, urban-oriented narratives and beats convincingly enough to make you think you might have stumbled upon a fresh hip-hop paradigm with WATERMELON, CHICKEN & GRITZ. From the combination of angular, street-smart production and country-boy portraiture on "Ballin' on a Budget" to the driving, R&B-flavored social consciousness of "Slums," Nappy Roots consistently prove themselves fully capable of digginginto their middle-American milieu without abandoning high-quality production or cutting edge beats. Don't let the hick album title fool you, these guys know which end is up. SKU: 1072863

Grass Roots
Personnel: Andrew Hill (piano); Booker Ervin, Frank Mitchell (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw (trumpet); Jimmy Ponder (guitar); Reggie Workman, Ron Carter (bass); Idris Muhammad, Freddie Waits (drums). Producer: Francis Wolff. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 19 & August 5, 1968. Originally released on Blue Note (84303, 35636). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series. Although Andrew Hill is widely known as the leader of such complex classic Blue Note albums as POINT OF DEPARTURE and SMOKESTACK, it is mostly forgotten that he composed Lee Morgan's follow-up to the "The Sidewinder," the trumpeter's equally groovy "The Rumproller." Here with GRASS ROOTS, which brings together two of Hill's sessions from 1968, the pianist steps back from his raging explorations to settle into a series of the soothing grooves that dominated the popular jazz scene of the late '60s. While this is not the most popular of Hill's excursions,it does reveal a side of the creative pianist rarely heard. What is also intriguing is the inclusion of alternate versions of the tracks "Venture Inward," "Soul Special," and "Bayou Red" from the bonus session, which were actually recorded earlier in the year than the master tracks. This makes for some interesting contrasts in interpretation from one session to the next. Finally, only the closing ballad "Love Nocturne" hints at Hill's more enigmatic side for which he is so widely acclaimed. SKU: 5084659

Tunnel Of Love
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards); Nils Lofgren (vocals, guitar); Jimmie Wood (harmonica); Roy Bittan (piano, synthesizer); Danny Federici (organ); Garry Tallent (bass); Max Weinberg (drums, percussion); Patty Scialfa, Clarence Clemons (background vocals). Producers: Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin. Recorded in New Jersey and at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. TUNNEL OF LOVE (Bruce Springsteen's ninth album) is essentially a solo release and marked the final chapter of The E Street band, whose members appear separately on several tracks. Springsteen's home studio in Rumson, New Jersey was the primary recording location. Popular music as an art form has attained some of its greatest peaks when dealing with the thorny material of relationships. Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel Of Love, a powerful meditation on his own disintegrating marriage, represents a classicof its type. Predominantly an intimate solo recording the songs convey the gamut of emotions experienced in a long-term relationship, from desire ('Ain't Got You') through disquiet and deceit ('Tunnel Of Love' and 'Brilliant Disguise') to despair ('When You're Alone'), ending on a note of cautious optimism ('Valentine's Day'). Springsteen would never again be as nakedly emotional as he was on this beautiful and honest album. SKU: 1083094

Shamal
Gong: Mike Howlett (bass, vocals), Didier "Bloom" Malherbe (tenor & soprano saxophones, flute, gongs), Patrice Lemoine (piano, organ, Mini-Moog), Mireille Bauer (marimba, glockenspiel, xylophone, gongs, percussion), Pierre Moerlen (drums, vibraphone, tubular bells). Additional personnel: Miquette Giraudy, Sandy Colley (vocals), Steve Hillage (acoustic & electric guitars), Jorge Pinchevsky (violin). Engineers: Phil Ault, Dave Hutchins, Ben King. Recorded at Basing Street Studios and Olympic Studios, London,England. By 1975, all Gong's rough edges were sanded away. Erstwhile leader Daevid Allen took his spacy/psychedelic hippie mythology with him when he left in '74. In it's place, the remaining members (vocalist Gilli Smyth and synth player Tim Blake had also departed) pursued a jazz-rock fusion sound and a group-led dynamic, with all members contributing ideas. SHAMAL is full of ultimately satisfying mid-'70s fusion, but the final traces of the old Gong can still be heard in Didier Malherbe's whimsical sax lines, bassist Mike Howlett's occasional vocals/lyrics and the biting guitar of Steve Hillage (at this point merely a guest musician). It's ironic that it was produced by Nick Mason since it's far from Gong's Pink Floydish space-rock origins, but SHAMAL is the first and probably the best of the Gong Mark II albums. SKU: 1004596

Fate Of Nations
Personnel: Robert Plant (vocals, guitar); Kevin Scott MacMichael (guitar, background vocals); Francis Dunnery, Richard Thompson, Oliver J. Woods, Doug Boyle (guitar); Martin Allcock (mandolin); Nigel Kennedy, Navazish Ali Khan (violin); Phil Johnstone (piano, keyboards, organ, harmonium, background vocals); Phillip Andrews (keyboards); Nigel Eaton (hurdy gurdy); Charlie Jones (bass, percussion); Pete Thompson, Michael Lee,Chris Hughes, Chris Blackwell (drums); Gurdev Singh (dilruba, sarod); Sursit Singh (sarangi); Maire Brennan, Julian Taylor, Steve French, John Flynn (background vocals). Robert Plant's performance of "Calling To You" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal." After a planned reunion with his ex-Led Zeppelin bandmates Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones fell through in the early 1990s, Robert Plant unsurprisingly returned to his solo career, while Page united with Plant soundalike David Coverdale. With its focused sound and songwriting, most longtime Zep/Plant fans point to his sixth solo release, 1993's FATE OF NATIONS, as one of his finest. Plant and his backing band continue to explore the harder rock sounds of his previous two solo albums, as evidenced by "Calling to You" and "Promised Land," while turning down the bombast and letting the mood get more reflective on "I Believe" and "The Greatest Gift." A few years after FATE OF NATIONS appeared, Plant and Page finally reunited. SKU: 1001038

Driven
Producers: Debra Baum, Michael Lloyd, Mike Curb. For a fast-paced film about drag racing, you might expect a soundtrack filled with speed-crazed metal or industrial music. While there are a couple of thrashing, heavy rockerson this disc (Tantric's "Breakdown," "Poison Well" by Insolence), the DRIVEN soundtrack mixes things up admirably and unexpectedly by including a generous amount of contemporary country music and eclectic pop-rock. Country ballads from some of Nashville's superstars (Tim McGraw, LeAnn Rimes) and some zesty cowpunk from Hank Williams's grandson Hank III rub shoulders with Rare Blend's version of the oft-sampled O'Jays classic "For the Love of Money" and Doyle Bramhall II's blazing, old-school blues-rocker "Green Light Girl." If you want to know how this all fits together, go see the movie. SKU: 1067125

Tilt
Perhapsnot even Scott Walker truly understands this record, which isn't to say that it it's not one of the most ambitious and ultimately rewarding musical experiences of the last few years; it's just that exactly what Walker was thinking when he made TILT remains a mystery to this day. Even Brian Eno, a huge Walker fan and no stranger to the avant-garde, apparently had to walk away from the sessions early on in the recording. Longtime Scott Walker fans shouldn't expect either the Brechtian song-stories of his solo material, or his Spector-influenced work with The Walker Brothers. TILT is the sound of a man swallowed whole by the music industry. Unidentifiable noises pop in and out of the mix as Walker's voice, a beautiful baritone almost unequaled in pop, floats ethereally around, at times seemingly diving deep into an undersea echo chamber. The lyrics are more haiku than iambic pentameter and those expecting a chorus (much less a verse), will be severely disappointed. Whatever TILT is, it's unlike anything you have ever heard. Eventually
Personnel: Paul Westerberg (vocals, guitar, alto saxophone, piano, organ, bass); Laurie Lindeen (vocals); Randall Davidson (strings); Brendan O'Brien (acoustic guitar, keyboards, bass); Michael Urbano (trumpet, drums, percussion); TommyStinson (trombone, bass); Davey Farragher, Keith Christopher (bass); Josh Freese, Michael Bland (drums, percussion); Eddie Miller (percussion). Producers: Paul Westerberg, Brendan O'Brien. Engineers: Lou Giordano, Nick DiDia. Recorded at Southern Tracks, Atlanta, Georgia; Ocean Way, Los Angeles, California; Paisley Park, Chanhassen, Minnesota. It took Paul Westerberg three years to issue a follow up to his 1993 solo debut, 14 SONGS. But when his sophomore effort, 1996's EVENTUALLY, finally appeared, Westerberg fans were treated to his finest work since the days of his former band, the late, great Replacements. EVENTUALLY has a slightly glossier production than its predecessor, but the excellence of the work makes up for any sonic slickness. Westerberg certainly hasn't forgotten how to pen sloppy Stonesy rockers and gritty yet warm folk ballads--both styles are featured throughout the album. Standouts include such tranquil moments as "Good Day," a tribute to Westerberg's recently fallen former Replacements buddy Bobby Stinson, "Mamadaddydid," "Ain't Got Me," and "Love Untold." Unforgettable
Personnel: Johnny Hartman (vocals); Gerald Wilson, Oliver Nelson (conductor); Anthony Ortega, Gabe Baltazar (alto saxophone); Bill Green, Plas Johnson, Harold Land, Teddy Edwards, Curtis Amy (tenor saxophone); Jack Nimitz, Bill Hood (baritone saxophone); Jules Chaikin, Freddie Hill, Melvin Moore, Bud Brisbois, Al Porcino, Ollie Mitchell, Conte Condoli (trumpet); Mike Barone, John Ewing, Lester Robertson, Ernie Tack, Billy Byers (trombone); Vinny Gill, Wilbert Nuttycomb, Jerome Reisler, John Vidusich, Betty Marks, Leonard Malarsky, George Poole, Daryl Terwilliger (violin); Samuel Boghossian, Alvin Rinkin (viola); Joseph Ditullio, Emmet Sargeant (cello); Mike Melvoin (piano); Herb Ellis, John Gray, Dennis Budimer, Howard Roberts (guitar); Jimmy Bond, Ray Brown, Joe Mondragon (bass); Stan Levey, Shelly Manne (drums); James Lockert (percussion). Reissue producers: Michael Cuscuna, Will Friedwald. Recorded in Los Angeles, California between February 15, 1966 and September 28, 1966. Originally released as UNFORGETTABLE SONGS BY JOHNNY HARTMAN on ABC-Paramount (574) and I LOVE EVERYBODY on ABC-Paramount (576). Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. UNFORGETTABLE includes previously unreleased tracks. From the first swinging cadences of "Almost Like Being In Love"--as the singer's lush virile baritone soars above Gerald Wilson's fat, brassy big-band chart--it's clear that producer Bob Thiele was pulling out all stops to establish Johnny Hartman as a vocal icon (a la Frank Sinatra, Billy Eckstine and Nat "King" Cole). But for all the obvious signposts and inspirations, the main impression listeners will take away from UNFORGETTABLE is what a singular, originalstylist Johnny Hartman was. Listen to how the trombones complement Hartman's smoky baritone on "The More I See You." Even when he's attacking a pop-styled chart such as "What Do I Owe Her," Hartman's phrasing is pleasingly horn-like; yet he manages to convey a subtle feel for the beat without descending into ostentatious techical displays. On "Down In The Depths" he displays a real flair for Broadway-styled theatrical flourishes; and on ornate arrangements of "Fools Rush In" and "The Very Thought Of You," Hartman demonstrates a natural aptitude for the big romantic statement--in the manner of popular crooners of the day, such as Tony Bennett. Live By Request
LIVE BY REQUEST was recorded for the A&E television series with the same name. Personnel: K.D. Lang (vocals); Greg Leisz (electric & pedal steel guitars); Gregg Arreguin (guitar); Teddy Borowiecki (keyboards); David Piltch (bass); Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums); Amy Keys, Kate Markowitz, Windy Wagner (background vocals). Recorded live at John Jay College Of Criminal Justice, Brooklyn, New York on December 14, 2000. k.d. Lang's first live album finds this amazingly talented artist and her eight-piece band taking a career-spanning tour through her genre-bending repertoire. Lang isn't shy about paying tribute to her heroes as she delivers an impressive range of covers by Roy Orbison ("Crying"), Patsy Cline ("Three Cigarettes In An Ashtray"), Peggy Lee ("Don't Smoke In Bed"), and Ella Fitzgerald ("Black Coffee"). When this Canadian chanteuse isn't deftly handling these interpretations, she's knee-deep in original material that's just as moving, particularly when rendered by such a crack band. Among the many highlights are the delicate vulnerability of "Wash Me Clean" (highlighted by Greg Leisz's crying pedal steel), the loping humor of the semi-autobiographical "Big Boned Gal," and the irresistible hit "Miss Chatelaine" with its exuberant squeezebox and trilling guitar bringing to mind images of a romantic bistro. Elsewhere, Lang is equally at home pouring herself into the dreamy pop of 2000's INVINCIBLE SUMMER ("Summerfling," "The Consequences Of Falling") and reaching back to the '80s for the hard country of earlier albumslike ABSOLUTE TORCH & TWANG ("Pullin' Back The Reins," "Trail Of Broken Hearts"). LIVE is a gem by a performer whose meandering creative path continues to yield gold. SKU: 1065066

Mars Venus
Koffee Brown: Fonz, Vee. Additional personnel includes: B-12, Du-Ganz, Balewa Muhammed, Chris Liggio, Carloton Upton, Eddie Kuri, Lil' Mo, Ciff Lighty. Engineers include: Darren Lighty, Adam Kudzin, Eric Scholtzer. Recorded at Da Mill Studios, New Jersey and Battery Studios, New York. This R&B duo's debut album is something of a conceptual piece. As the title indicates, the theme is one of interpersonal relationships as contextualized by the popular book MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS. With Fonz representing the passions and tribulations of the man in the battle of the sexes and Vee presenting the female viewpoint, the aural stage is set for some sonically rewarding adventures in the often-confusing land of love. While there's a strong hip-hop flavor to the arrangements on MARS/VENUS, there's also enough old-school R&B sensibility to ensure that Koffee Brown's music will make as many friends amongAshford & Simpson fans as they will among R. Kelly admirers. SKU: 1059564

Secret Treaties [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with BLUE OYSTER CULT and TYRANNY & MUTATION. Blue Oyster Cult: Eric Bloom (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Donald "BuckDharma" Roeser (vocals, guitar); Joe Bouchard (vocals, bass); Albert Bouchard (vocals, drums); Allan Lanier (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer). Producers: Murray Krugman, Sandy Pearlman. Reissue producer: Bruce Dickinson. Recorded in 1974. Originally released on Columbia (32858). Includes liner notes by Lenny Kaye. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music, New York, New York). While Blue Oyster Cult's third release, 1974's SECRET TREATIES, continued to expand the band's fervent following, it lacked the heavy metal intensity that made the band's sophomore release, TYRANNY AND MUTATION, so exceptional. While hard rock compositions abound on SECRET TREATIES, the vast space rock of the group's self-titled 1972 debut can be detected back in the mix, courtesy of mainstay BOC producers Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman. While the album didn't prove to be the Blue Oyster Cult's breakthrough success (AGENTS OF FORTUNE would do the trick two years later), SECRET TREATIES is held in high regard by longtime fans, and has subsequently reached gold certification. The epic album closer, "Astronomy," would receive greater attention nearly 25 years after its initial release when Metallica covered it on the band's all-covers collection, GARAGE INC., in 1998, but other tracks are just as strong. "Career of Evil" was co-written by drummer Albert Bouchard and famous punk poet Patti Smith, and remains one of BOC's finest. Other standouts include the edgy rocker "Dominance and Submission," the synth-enhanced "Flaming Telepaths," and the vicious "ME 262." SECRET TREATIES was issued as a specially priced CD three-pack in 1995 along with BLUE OYSTER CULT and TYRANNY AND MUTATION. SKU: 1061075

Chance [Remastered]
A few years had passed since Manfred Mann had scored a surprise hit with their cover of Bruce Springsteen's"Blinded by the Light," so on 1980's CHANCE, the band reworked another Springsteen composition, "For You." As with "Blinded," the band completely overhauled the song and made it their own, the end result almost completely different than the Boss' original version. The British band continued on the musical path they started during the previous decade, completely shedding their early blues-rock workouts for a more current sound aimed at the top of the pop charts. Other individual standouts include the album opener "Lies (Through the '80s)," "On the Run," and "Stranded." Up to this point, Manfred Mann was cranking out at least one album per year, but it would be three years (their longest break between albums to date) until their next album, 1983's SOMEWHERE IN AFRIKA, would appear.
