Supreme Al Green, The
Producers: Willie Mitchell, Al Green. Compilation producer: Nick Coleman. Includes liner notes by Nick Coleman. If you're not prepared to spring for theexcellent box set, THE SUPREME AL GREEN will provide you with as comprehensive an overview of Green's oeuvre as possible. Over the course of eighteen cuts, this compilation spans Green's magical work for Hi Records. The ten albums he made for the label amount to a Ten Commandments of '70s R&B. His sensuous, improvisational style meshed perfectly with the understated soul of bandleader Willie Mitchell and his cohorts (Al Jackson, the Hodges brothers, etc.) to produce a transcendental experience in sound. This collection moves gracefully from the anxious funk of "I Can't Get Next To You" to the timeless devotional plea of "Let's Stay Together." On "Simply Beautiful" Green's vocal gift is presented against a stark backdrop, allowing every subtle nuance of his richly textured voice to speak volumes. On tunes like "Take Me to the River" and "L-O-V-E" Green explores the combination of spiritual and earthly desires from which he forged a rewarding career. SKU: 3101703

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Remastered/+DVD) [SACD]
Full title: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: 30th Anniversary Edition. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. This release includes a bonus DVD. Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, electric piano, organ, Farfisa organ, Mellotron, keyboards); Del Newman (arranger); Prince Rhino (vocals); Davey Johnstone (acoustic, electric, slide & steel guitars, banjo, background vocals); Leroy Gomez (saxophone); David Hentschel (ARP synthesizer); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, congas, tambourine, background vocals); Ray Cooper (tambourine); Kiki Dee (background vocals). Recorded at Strawberry Studios, France. Originally released as a 2-LP set on MCA. Inlcudes liner notes by John Tobler. Generally regarded as Elton John's masterpiece, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD is a double-album (on one CD) that includes several of his signature songs alongside a sprawling array of lesser-known (but by no means lesser) tunes. The hits included "Bennie And The Jets," a funky, falsetto stomper; the Rolling Stonesy rocker "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"; and the gorgeous title ballad. "CandleIn The Wind," an elegy for Marilyn Monroe, which didn't become a certified hit until 14 years later, when John re-recorded it with the Melbourne Symphony. The fact that it wasn't released as a single at the time is testimony to the wealth of pop pleasures available here. The swelling, synth-fueled overture of "Funeral For A Friend" gives way to one of John's toughest guitar-rockers in an 11-minute medley. "Grey Seal" is a piano showcase with a perfect verse-chorus-verse construction. The rocking "All The Girls Love Alice" is one of the era's most overt references to lesbianism, and "Harmony," the soft ballad that closes the album, may be John's grandest melody. Willfully eclectic and packed with great music, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD bursts with the bold energy and undeniable talent that made John a superstar. SKU: 6542290

Loyal To The Game [PA]
Personnel: 2Pac (rap vocals); Ron Isley, Sleepy Brown (vocals); EDI, Eminem, G-Unit, Jadakiss, Nate Dogg, Noble, Obie Trice, Big Syke (rap vocals). Producers: Eminem; Scott Storch; Red Spyda; Raphael Saadiq; DJ Quick. Dozens of posthumous releases have been culled from 2Pac's archives, both by his mother, Afeni Shakur, and by more dubious sources. Eight years after the conflicted poet/thug's death comes LOYAL TO THE GAME, featuring more untapped rhymes. These recordings are the latest unearthed by Ms. Shakur, and while it might be easy to dismiss yet another new collection, two things work in the album's favor. The tapes were handed over to hip-hop icon Eminem, providing a completely unique angle on 2Pac's rhymes. More importantly, while these offerings are late in coming, that is not to say 2Pac's mother is desperately peddling the dregs of his output; the lyrics on LOYAL TO THE GAME are razor-sharp. Eminem's trademarked heavily syncopated sound provides an almost surreal sheen to the proceedings, and Em's voice graces the strong opening track, "Soldier Like Me (AKA The Return of the Soulja)." The guests run the gamut from 2Pac contemporaries Nate Dogg and members of the fallen rapper's crew, the Outlawz, to relative newcomers Jadakiss and G-Unit, but all performances are solid and requisitely reverent to the memory of Tupac Shakur. LOYAL TO THE GAMEsimply combines strong remaining lyrics of a late master with newer ones, and stands as one of the best posthumous 2Pac releases. SKU: 6579793

Leave Home (Remastered And Expanded)
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass, background vocals); Tommy Ramone (drums). Producers: Tony Bongiovi, T. Erdelyi. Reissue producers: Bill Inglot, Gary Stewart. Recorded at Sundragon, New York,New York and live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California on August 12, 1976. Includes liner notes by Donna Gaines and Arturo Vega. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (Digiprep). Released only months after RAMONES, the Ramones' second album pales slightly in comparison to its stone-classic predecessor--but only slightly. LEAVE HOME contains enough all-time Ramones anthems--"Commando," "Pinhead" (which introduces the legendary "Gabba Gabba Hey" chant), and "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," to name only three--that it's still an essential document of the New York punk scene. Rhino's remastered 2001 reissue restores the original running order of the album, including "Carbona Not Glue," which was hastily removed from the 1977 vinyl not because it advocated dangerous activities but because the manufacturers of the spot remover Carbona objected. More importantly, this reissue appends a whopping 16 bonus tracks, the entirety of the Ramones' August 1976 Hollywood live debut. Half the tracks don't even hit the two-minute mark--the longest is "Beat on the Brat," an epic 2:36--and the whole thing is over in under half an hour. Years of hardcore punk and the ever-increasing BPMs of underground dance music mean that this stuff doesn't sound as shockingly speedy now as it did at the time; what's surprising is how cheerful and poppy this allegedly transgressive music comes across, and how unexpectedly tight and well-rehearsed the supposedly sloppy band is. Doggy Style
This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files including the video for "What's My Name." Personnel includes: Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dr. Dre, Dat Nigga Daz, The Queen Of Funk, Ricky Harris, RBX, The Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, Warren G, Kurupt, The Hug, Nancy Fletcher, The Lady Of Rage, D.O.C., Lil Malik, The Dramatics (rap vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. "Gin & Juice" was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Long Beach, California's Snoop Doggy Dogg made one of the most successful debuts in rap music with DOGGYSTYLE. Introduced on the Dr. Dre single "Deep Cover," Snoop gained further popularity with his smoothed-out gangsta-type flow on Dre's THE CHRONIC. His music has ruled the clubs and the airwaves ever since, and the fact that his Dr. Dre-directed video "Murder Was The Case" was extended into an 18-minute feature-length film with its own soundtrack is further proof of just how much pull Snoop has in the hip-hop nation. Having super-producer Dr. Dre behind the scenes guaranteed DOGGYSTYLE a top ten spot on the pop charts. Singles like "Gin And Juice" and "Who Am I (What's My Name)" have helped Snoop gain the recognition of the entire music industry without selling out his original rap audience. Possessing among the most unique deliveries in hip-hop, Snoop revives the old-school with his remake of the classic "Lodi Dodi"--originally performed by Slick Rick, and reinterpreted in a West Coast style. A guest appearance by The Dramatics on "Doggy Dog World" also helps illustrate the rapper's fondness for 70's grooves. And just as Dre pushed him out front on THE CHRONIC, Snoop empowers Tha Dogg Pound on DOGGYSTYLE, allowing his homies to share in his spotlight on "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)." Best Of Los Van Van, The
Back in 1969, a young Cuban musician called Juan Formell took traditional son by the scruff of the neck and refused to let go. Introducing such novelties as a drum kit, string orchestration, and a fascination with modern keyboard sounds, he gave it an entirely different slant that became known as songo. Within a few years, Los Van Van's unique sound had propelled the group onto theworld stage. Formell's sense of bravado has remained true to itself and its legions of followers to this day. This intoxicating compilation is drawn from four albums in the '90s, and explores their vein of upbeat salsa-oriented dance music, as opposed to the Caribbean rock & roll and synthesized experimentalism of their first two decades. Formell's tight direction and pithy bass lines supports the three lead singers rotating behind the microphone, each delivering his own brand of gruff vocal improvisation and fiery humor. The live "El Tren Se Va" and the justly famous "Soy Todo" show them at their best, and the final astonishing "Este Te Pone La Cabeza Mala" is nothing short of a Cuban magical musicological mystery tour. Enjoy the ride. SKU: 1081937

Burning Spear: Winston Rodney (vocals, percussion); Lenford Richards (guitar, piano, keyboards); Linvall Jarrett (guitar); Mark Wilson (saxophone); James Smith (trumpet); Charles Dickey (trombone); Jay Noel (keyboards); Paul Beckford (bass); Nelson Miller (drums). Additional personnel: Dean Fraser (saxophone); Chico Chin (trumpet); Nambo Robinson (trombone); Robby Lyn (piano, synthesizer); Richard Johnson (piano). Recorded at Grove Studio, Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Burning Spear (a.k.a. Winston Rodney) spent most of the '80s bouncing between labels after establishing himself thanks to a string of legendary '70s albums released on Mango Records. The early '90s found Spear back with Mango and 1991's JAH KINGDOM was the last album he released on this Island Records offshoot before returning to indie label Heartbeat. Staying consistent to his long-standing devotion to spreading his faith, Spear filled KINGDOM with words of praise for both Jah and Rastafari ("Praise Him," "Call on Jah") as well as pride in his roots ("Land of My Birth"). Guest musicians includelegendary Jamaican instrumentalist Dean Fraser, and the rest of the collective plays with a lighter touch than what was normally heard on Spear's previous albums. This approach enabled Spear to put more of a steel-drum flavored, Caribbean spin on "Come, Come" and also redo the Grateful Dead's "Estimated Prophet," originally done for a Dead tribute album. Erpland [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with PUNGENT ELFUNGENT and BECOME THEOTHER. Ozric Tentacles includes: Ed Wynne (guitar). All tracks have been digitally remastered. ERPLAND (originally a double LP) is the Ozric Tentacles' first CD proper and sets the tone for the records that follow. Let the wizard lead you throughout these uncharted lands, across the rainbow-splashed peninsula on the cover, as you bask in the radioactive glow of "Eternal Wheel," tumbling to and fro on a river of bubbling sequencers and cybertronic guitars. Prepare yourself for the mental journeys across inner space and "Mysticum Arabicola," where tablas pound out the future sounds of India, while above, our alien ancestors descend to reclaim the planet that was once their own, their starship's lights shimmering and boosters blasting the approaching earth into obsidian. This is music of colors, energy, and vitality; impeccably produced and extremely well executed. It would be a high crime to not enjoy the galloping sequencers, outerreach electronics, coruscating guitar lines, and enthralling percussion of the Ozrics on anything but the best that high fidelity has to offer. Fireball (25th Anniversary Edition)
FIREBALL is a digitally remastered edition featuring bonus tracks, outtakes, and remixes. Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Engineers: Martin Birch, Lou Austin, Alan O'Duffy. Rceorded at Welcombe Maor Studios, Devonshire, England in 1971. Includes liner notes by Simon Robinson. By the time of this 1971 release, Deep Purple was in the midst of making the transition from the hard-edged pop of the band's first line-up to a band that was battling Led Zeppelin for the hard rock crown. Having already gotten off to a great start with DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK, this Purple lineup of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice fit together like interlocking pieces. Blessed with such unerring chemistry, Purple raised the bar for hard rock with such nuggets as the hard-driving title track and the grinding "Fools." Elsewhere, they show surprising range with thecountry-flavored "Anyone's Daughter" (featuring some impressive finger picking by Blackmore) and the Jimi Hendrix-influenced "No One Came" (which includes a dollop of psychedelic backwards guitar). Also included is the Purple epic "The Mule," a sweeping tour de force dominated by Blackmore's Middle Eastern-tinged soloing and Lord's Pink Floyd-ian keyboard runs. The song became a highlight of Deep Purple's live shows. SKU: 1001840

Rising [Remastered]
Rainbow: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jimmy Bain (bass); Tony Carey (keyboards); Cozy Powell (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. As the drums kick into the fierce opener "Tarot Woman," it's obvious that RISING delivers directly to your door. It is the band's second release, and a vast improvement over RICHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW. With a revamped lineup that sounds like it had been touring together for years, the album takes no prisoners. "Starstruck" is a classic groove reminiscent of guitarist Blackmore's ex-band Deep Purple. Blackmore replaced everyone from the first album's lineup except vocalist Ronnie Dio with Jimmy Bain (bass), Tony Carey (keyboards), and Cozy Powell (drums). Dio shows what he's got with a stellar performance on "Do You Close Your Eyes." "Stargazer" is the band's "Kashmir," an epic eight-minute track that could stand as its signature song. "A Light in the Black" features the skin bashing of the late, great Mr. Powell. RISING is a must-havefor any fan of Dio, Blackmore, or classic metal. Five musicians came together for a one-shot moment that won't be duplicated. The album is magic. SKU: 1017790

"Un-Break My Heart" won a 1997 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and "You're Makin Me High" won a 1997 Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "You're Makin Me High" was also nominated for Best R&B Song, and SECRETS was nominated for Best Pop Album. Toni Braxton is one of the most promising divas of the '90s, with a sophisticated sound and traditional R&B style that puts her in a class with Whitney Houston and Anita Baker. With the help of R&B's leading songwriter, Babyface, she can deliver the perfect love song (such as "Let It Flow," which also appeared on 1995's mega-hit soundtrack WAITING TO EXHALE). SECRETS, her second album, is a soulful journey through her heart. SECRETS combines Braxton's sultry vocals with the genre's more creative producers. Tony Rich paints the background of "Come On Over Here," Babyface and Groove Theory's Bryce Wilson beef up the track for the hot single "You're Making Me High," and R. Kelly provides thesoft bump-and-grind sound for "I Don't Want To." SECRETS is filled with original material. No samples. No remakes. And with a debut album that earned her the 1994 Grammy for Best New Artist, it is no SECRET that Toni Braxton is destined to repeat her success. SKU: 4122715

Dry And Heavy
Personnel: Winston Rodney (vocals, percussion); Chinna Smith, Roots Kinsley, Ranchie (guitar); Marquis (alto saxophone); "Dirty Harry" Hall (tenor saxophone); Bobbie Ellis (trumpet); Trommie (trombone); W. Lindo, T. Harvey (keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare, Aston "Family Man" Barrett (bass); Horsemouth Wallace (drums); Sticky Skully (percussion). Recorded at Harry J Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. DRY & HEAVY represents the delineation of a new chapter in Burning Spear's (a.k.a. Winston Rodney) career as this was the first album he cut after splitting with producer Jack Ruby and backup singers Rupert Wellington and Delroy Hines (who'd been incorrectly perceived as part of a group called Burning Spear). For this album, Rodney, who was always a shrewd judge of musical talent, surrounded himself with some of Jamaica's finest studio musicians, including members of the Wailers and Skatalites. Free of Ruby's heavy hand, Spear's production style is more upbeat and as a result, his voice soars as he sings about the Jamaican countryside on "Any River" and praises "The Sun" amidst some lively horn arrangements. Throughout DRY & HEAVY, guitarist Chinna Smith chimes in with crackling riffs as keyboardists Tonter Harvey and brothers Earl and Willie Lindo generously dollop in swirling keyboard runs as Spear preaches about pacifism ("Throw Down Your Arms") and Creationism ("It's a Long Way Around"). Burning Spear's fifthstudio album perfectly merges this deeply religious man's musical and philosophic views. SKU: 1005543

Coltrane Jazz
Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Wynton Kelly, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton (piano); Paul Chambers, Steve Davis (bass); Jimmy Cobb, Lex Humphries, Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York between April 1, 1959 and October 21, 1960. Includes liner notes by Zita Carno. Released shortly after the groundbreaking Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz features a number of takes from the 'Naima' session, with Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, as well as a track with Cedar Walton and Lex Humphries and an early outing by his newly formed quartet featuring pianist McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis and Elvin Jones. While lacking the conceptual strength of many of Coltrane's greatest works, Coltrane Jazz captures the saxophonist during one of his interesting periodsof change, and includes some memorable original tunes. Particularly worth investigating are 'Harmonique', an unusual theme involving polyphonics (more than one note played simultaneously), and a beautiful ballad performance of 'I'll Wait And Pray'. Grave Dancers Union
Soul Asylum: Dave Pirner, Daniel Murphy (vocals, guitar); Karl Mueller (bass); Grant Young (drums). Additional personnel: Meridian String Quartet (strings); Michael Beinhorn (glockenspiel, celeste); Booker T. Jones (organ); Sterling Campbell (percussion); Gary Louris, Kraig Johnson (background vocals). Engineers: Chris Shaw, Eric Anderson, Bruce Robb. Recorded at The Power Station and River Sound, New York, New York; Pachyderm Discs, Cannon Falls, Minnesota; Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles, California. "Runaway Train" won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. It was also nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. GRAVE DANCER'S UNION was the culmination of career's worth of near misses for Soul Asylum. After slogging away at the college radio and club circuits, the third single from this album, "Runaway Train," placed Soul Asylum among rock's superstars. The record even lead to an invitation to perform at President Clinton's inauguration. "Somebody to Shove" is a classic Soul Asylum rocker. It features big guitars, punching drums, and a chorus that seems designed expressly as a sing-along for a stadium full of fans. "Black Gold" starts with a deceptive acoustic guitar line that leads into the monster electric riffs of the chorus. On "Runaway Train," Dave Pirner's lyrics and vocals are genuinely affecting. "Keep it Up," "April Fool," and "Get on Out" are directdescendants of the band's pedigree in 1970s rock. The album's standout is "Without a Trace," one of Soul Asylum's best songs. It contains one of the great near rhymes in the history of rock-listen carefully to hear it. SKU: 1009150

Boom Boom
Personnel: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar); John Hammond (guitar, harmonica); Robert Cray, Albert Collins, Jimmie Vaughan, Rich Kirch, Billy Johnson, Mike Osborn (guitar); Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica); Mitch Woods (piano); Deacon Jones (organ); Jim Guyett, Steve Ehrmann (bass); Scott Mathews, Bowen Brown (drums). Recorded at Russian Hill Recording, San Francisco, California and ThePlant, Sausalito, California. Produced by slide guitar maestro Roy Rogers, BOOM BOOM finds John Lee Hooker matched with an assortment of famous names. Robert Cray and his band provide sultry backup on "Same Old Blues Again" and with Jimmie Vaughan taking Cray's place, the band jukes it up on the title track. The late Albert Collins helps the Hook turn "Boogie At Russian Hill" into an infectious shuffle, whereas "Bottle Up And Go" slows things down a bit more, with John Hammond contributing guitar and harmonica to the proceedings. Hooker's greatness is most apparent when his only accompaniment comes from a guitar on which he's scraping out primitive chords. The results range from the bittersweet "Hittin' The Bottle Again" to the more ominous "I'm Bad Like Jesse James." The only other time a song gets this sinister is when Charlie Musselwhite uses some understated harmonica playing to give "Thought I Heard" a more dastardly edge. Moments like this make it seem as if the Devil met his match in John Lee Hooker after getting the best of Robert Johnson. SKU: 1005965
