Graffiti Bridge (Original Soundtrack)
Personnel: Prince(vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Morris Day (vocals, drums); Rosie Gaines, Elisa, Mavis Staples, Tevin Campbell, George Clinton (vocals); Candy Dulfer, Eric Leeds (saxophone); Atlanta Bliss (trumpet); Joseph Fiddler, Boni Boyer (keyboards, background vocals); Levi Seacer, Jr. (bass, background vocals); Sheila E. (drums, background vocals); The Steeles, The New Power Generation, Garry Shider, Steve Boyd, William Payne, Belita Woods, Tracey Lewis, Mike Harris, Pat Lewis, Sandra Dance, Jerome Benton, Jana Anderson (background vocals); T.C. Ellis, Robin Power, The Time. Engineers include: Eddie Garcia, Mark Platl, Coke Johnson. Recorded at Paisley Park, Minnesota and Mad Hatters, Los Angeles, California. It's easy to dismiss this album as an unfocused mess--and many have. On GRAFFITI BRIDGE, Prince writes songs for colleagues to play; nine of the 17 cuts feature other artists such as The Time, Mavis Staples, Tevin Campbell and George Clinton. And it is indeed messy. But the record's merits must be acknowledged too. At the top of this list is the song "Joy in Repetition," a slight narrative idea clung to, wrapped in dreamy bluesiness, and beautifully delivered. Also notable is "We Can Funk." Many have tried to reclaim George Clinton's P-Funk contributions to butt-shaking music, but few have managed it without losing their own identity. Prince pulls it off. Even some of Prince's missteps can be classified as brilliant mistakes, beautiful failures. The overtly Christian "Elephants and Flowers" is as preposterously rich and frothy as its title. "Thieves in the Temple's" sonic frou-frou has earned it fans, despite its greasy aftertaste. GRAFFITI BRIDGE is a funk experiment from a man who never rests on his laurels. SKU: 1001078

Definitive Louis Armstrong, The
Personnel includes: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet, cornet); Jack Teagarden (vocals, trombone); The Mills Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Don Redman (spoken vocals, alto saxophone); Earl Hines (spoken vocals, piano); Sidney Bechet (soprano saxophone); Teddy Hill (tenor saxophone); Henry "Red" Allen, Shelton Hemphill, Clark Terry (trumpet); King Oliver (cornet); Kid Ory, J.C. Higginbotham, Wilbur De Paris, J.J. Johnson (trombone); Johnny Dodds (clarinet); Lil Hardin Armstrong, Clarence Williams, Oscar Peterson (piano); Herb Ellis (guitar); Eddie Condon (banjo); George "Pops" Foster, Red Callender (bass); Baby Dodds (drums, chimes); Zutty Singleton, Paul Barbarin, Sid Catlett, Louis Bellson (drums). Compilation producers: Michael Brooks, Ken Burns. Recorded between 1923 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Doug Ramsey. Digitally remastered by Darcy M. Proper (Sony Studios, New York, New York). This is part of the Columbia/Legacy Ken Burns JAZZ series. Though documentarian Ken Burns's ten-part series JAZZ moves through several decades and several styles of jazz, the one figure who dominates the sonic/cultural landscape of the entire documentary is Louis Armstrong, the trumpeter/vocalist generally credited withinventing jazz as we know it and pioneering the art of improvisation. Covering Armstrong's career on a single disc is a tough job, but in conjunction with the series, we are able to see how these selections represent Armstrong's various periods of development. We get not only his pioneering early New Orleans cuts lie "Potato Head Blues" and "Chimes Blues," but his later pop crossover hits, such as "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife." While the latter should be familiar to all, the former are probably known only to jazz fans, and will be a special treat for the neophyte listener. SKU: 1055135

Through The Years
Includes liner notesby Casserine Toussaint. With a band as long-lived and prolific as Jethro Tull, there are naturally compilations aplenty. So THROUGH THE YEARS, with its three-decade perspective on Tull, avoids the obvious choices. Instead of crowd-pleasing riff-rockers that radio listeners have been bombarded with for ages, this collection focuses on lesser-known Tull tracks, providing a kind of alternative history for the neophyte, and a walk through familiar-but-esoteric pastures for the longtime fan. Aside from an energetic live version of the flute-driven rocker "Locomotive Breath," the only "radio" song here is "Living in the Past." Beyond that, THROUGH THE YEARS explores the outer reaches of the Tull catalog. One of the lesser-known songs from the classic AQUALUNG album, "Wind Up" is a pointed, acerbic attack on Christian hypocrisy. SONGS FROM THE WOOD's "The Whistler" ventures into the more pastoral, progressive folk-rock side of the band's sound. This compilation isn't afraid to venture into the later volumes of Tull's history either, and the willingness to leave preconceptions beside makes it possible for THROUGH THE YEARS to present Tull in a fresh--if not entirely unfamiliar--light. Things That I Used To Do, The
Like the domestic release SUFFERIN' MIND, THE THINGS THAT I USED TO DO collects Slim's classic 1953-'55 recordings for the New Orleans-based Specialty label, the sides which almost all fans agree are the guitarist's most essential work. Ray Charles was Slim's musical director and pianoplayer on these sessions, but while Charles' inimitable playing is instantly recognizable on tracks like "Well I Done Got Over It," these songs are Guitar Slim's all the way. Besides the classic title track, "Sufferin' Mind," "Bad Luck Is On Me" and the prison blues "Letter To My Girlfriend" are among the highlights. The sound quality and packaging are excellent. Cool Rasta
COOL RASTA contains the BOOK OF RULES album and various rare recordings. The Heptones: Leroy Sibbles, Earl Morgan, Barry Llewellyn. Includes liner notes by Dave Hendley. All tracks have been digitally remastered. One of the preeminent vocal groups of ska and rocksteady eras, the Heptones were talented, successful, and flexible enough to adapt to the changing tide of Jamaica's music in the 1970s. This was fortunate, because the group released some of its finest material in the '70s, blending cool doo-wop-flavored harmonies with the deep roots rhythms of reggae. COOL RASTA finds the fine lead tenor of Leroy Sibbles and the sweet voices of Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn in top form. The record is aptly titled--easy, laid-back grooves are the order of the day here. The title track in particular is adrowsy, down-tempo jam that has the Heptones' stellar harmonies floating through the mix like ghosts. "Dreadlock" is half-loungy, half-cerebral, and upholds the group's Rastafarian beliefs, as do "Peace and Harmony" and the historically conscious "Suffering So." Trojan's 2002 reissue of the album features wonderfully remastered sound and nine bonus tracks, including several compelling dub remixes and two versions of "Book of Rules," one of the band's best songs. Quality [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Talib Kweli, Dave Chapelle, Cocoa Brovaz, Xzibit, Mos Def, Novel, Vinia Mojica, Res, Pharoahe Monch, Black Thought, Kanye West, Kendra Ross, Bilal. Producers include: Ayatollah, Megahertz, Kanye West, Jay Dee, DJ Quik. For one of New York's most notable "underground" rappers, Talib Kweli has been involved in some pretty high-profile endeavors, like the 1998 Black Star album that topped countless hip-hop polls, and his collaborations with Hi-Tek. However, it's on his own that Kweli can really focus on his vision and direction. Musically, TK is as eclectic as ever here; the manifesto "Rush" features hard-rock guitar riffing; "Where Do We Go" is a gentle, melodic track driven by sparkling piano and poignant strings. Along the way, QUALITY incorporates samples of everyone from Nina Simone to Chuck Mangione. Lyrically, Kweli is as positive and creative as ever, boldly continuing to provide an effective contrast to the downcast, violent themes soprevalent in hip-hop. As in all his other work, the message is ostensibly simple--wake up and look around you--but as any good lyricist (a category in which Kweli certainly belongs) must know, the devil is in the details. And it's those details that put some powerful flesh on this album's bones. SKU: 1077551

Amen
Personnel: Paula Cole (vocals, electric guitar, clarinet, piano, Wurlitzer & Fender Rhodes pianos, Clavinet, Moog synthesizer, keyboards, Juno & Rhodes basses); Kevin Barry (acoustic, electric, baritone, hi-strung acoustic, electric baritone, Fillanoma, Leslie electric & electric sitar guitars, E-bow, mandolin); Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar); Susan Jolles (harp); Tony Levin (electric & upright electric basses, Chapman stick); Jay Bellerose (drums, udu drum, wah drums, cocktail drum, crasher, sansamp crasher, shaker, tambourine); Alfredo Hidrovo (bongos, shaker); DJ Premier (scratches); Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins (background vocals). Recorded at Globe Studios, New York, New York. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Paula Cole gives a powerful performance on this stirring dialogue with humanity and the divine. She's clearly done a lot of thinking and growing up since therelease of THIS FIRE, and as a result offers a previously unmatched emotional candor. Veteran drummer Jay Bellerose joins her again with his complementing touch, while Kevin Barry provides all manner of guitar work to complete the core of the Paula Cole Band. Barry's gleaming long-tones, wah-wah riffs, and blues licks constantly add color to a production that rings with echoes of '70s and early-'80s soul and a hip-hop sensibility. While AMEN often moves to a soft, light groove, the lyrics are anything but. From the heartbreaking scenarios of "Be Somebody" to the transcendent declarations of "Rhythm Of Life" and "Pearl," Cole's self-penned tunes are awash in talk of God and pressing questions of faith. Live In New Orleans
Personnel: Little Jimmy Scott, Paul Gayten, John Hunt, Ray Abrams, Numa "Poe Wee" Moore, Teddy Brannon, Thomas Legange, Wesley Landis. Little Jimmy Scott's stint as vocalist with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra put him on the musical map. He next signed on with bandleader Paul Gayten. This live set features Gayten's band and was recorded in 1951 in New Orleans at Rip's Playhouse. Scott's voice is a constant marvel, and the set choices and the live ambiance of the club make palpable the experience of witnessing a regional band performing in front of a hometown crowd. Though recorded on just one microphone, the performance is lively and rich with character. Scott and the band play a mix of then-recognizable standards and more contemporary numbers. Scottsings five of the album's songs and tenor saxophonist Sam Butera also guests on two instrumental selections. SKU: 5076306

Ironman
Personnel: Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Cappadonna, Method Man, The RZA, Inspektah Dek, U-God, Masta Killa, Street (rap vocals); Mary J. Blige, The Delphonics, Force MD's (vocals). Producers include: The RZA. Recorded at Mystic Studios, Staten Island, New York. IRONMAN is the first solo album by a member of the Wu-Tang Clan in almost a year, and rap fans waited a long time for it. The previous year, after all, yielded four of them, all largely produced by Wu-Tang mastermind RZA. IRONMAN is an RZA production, too, largely a masterpiece in its own right. It's likely to raise the level of anticipation, if that's possible, for the full band's follow-up to the 1993 landmark ENTER THEWU-TANG. IRONMAN is as singular an album as any of the individual Wu-Tang releases. Within its raw, basement sound are so many separate elements that it's sometimes hard to believe they're actually coalescing into a single song; it's as if the songs are defying the laws of physics. Lyrically, Ghostface's rhyme style is more complex than it first appears. Whether shouting his creed ("Daytona 500") or romancing an older woman ("Camay"), Ghostface speaks to his listeners in a private slang, and it often takes more than one listen to pick up on his metaphors. Most of the other Wu-Tangers make cameos here; Ghost's sidekicks Raekwon and Cappadonna are all over this album. SKU: 1000472

Ride The Lightning
Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark in Spring 1984. Metallica turned the metal world on its ear with their debut album, KILL 'EM ALL and then blew its mind with the follow-up, RIDE THE LIGHTNING. The riffs and arrangements are more intricate, the lyrics are more intelligent and biting and James Hetfield's growl is meaner. The set starts out with two tunes that would have been right at home on KILL'EM ALL, but the next two are slower and more involved. "Ride The Lightning" is a slow (by Metallica's standards) dirge about the futility of war. "Fade To Black" is a ballad (!) that builds to an instrumental coda featuring the guitar melodies that the band would later base their sound around. It's also Hetfield's first attempt at singing in tune. The most ambitious song is a dense instrumental, "The Call Of Ktulu," that starts with a single arpeggiated guitar and slowly adds layer upon layer, building in intensity until it all comes crashing down nine minutes later. Fields Of Gold (The Best Of Sting 1984-1994) [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Sting (vocals, guitar, bass), Stoker (programming). Producers: Hugh Padgham, Sting (tracks 1, 3-4, 8, 10, 14), Pete Smith, Sting (tracks 2, 5, 13), Neil Dorfsman, Sting (tracks 6-7, 9, 11-12). Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig and Mark Mazzetti (Gateway Mastering Studios). All songs written by Sting. "When We Dance" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Emerging from new wave on the wings of hits like "Roxanne" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me," the Police perfected an appealing synthesis of reggae, pop and freewheeling instrumental flourishes rooted in the power trio conventions of earlier electric blues bands. Yet for all the elemental tension Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland brought to each arrangement, Sting's keening tenor and canny ear for melodic hooks propelled the band's popularity. As his writing skills matured through SYNCHRONICITY, Sting's need for artistic control--and a tighter rhythmic focus--necessitated a band in which he was the unquestioned leader. FIELDS OF GOLD chronicles the work of a classic pop vocalist who is simply unwilling to rest on his laurels--a wide ranging collection of brainy power pop, with two new songs ("When We Dance" and "This Cowboy") acting as stylistic bookends. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis and bassist Daryl Jones addkey elements of jazz and soul to such confessional hits as "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" and "Fortress Around Your Heart," while Sting's infatuation with Brazilian music animates the tender "Fragile." As his metaphysical and political muse evolved, Sting's orchestrations grew more ambitious, from the reggaeish strings of "Englishman In New York," through the lush, keyboard-inflected R&B of "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and the edgy funk of "We'll Be Together." FIELDS OF GOLD is a remarkably classy, consistent set of tunes. SKU: 1001047

Not A Pretty Girl
Personnel: Ani DiFranco (vocals, acoustic, electric & steel guitar, thumb piano, bass, percussion); Andy Stochansky (vocals, drums, percussion); Kate Fenner (vocals). Recorded at The Recording Complex, Buffalo, New York and 1:2:1, Toronto, Canada. 1995's NOT A PRETTY GIRL synthesizes elements of Ani DiFranco's six prior albums and is widely considered one of this wildly prolific Buffalo, New York-based singer/songwriter's finest efforts. Here, the folky acoustic starkness of ANI DIFRANCO and NOT SO SOFT meshes with songs that recall the detailed full-band arrangements of LIKE I SAID and OUT OF RANGE. DiFranco even remakes an earlier song, IMPERFECTLY's "Coming Up." Lyrically, thealbum also refines topics previously covered. There's the abortion drama "Tiptoe," the sneering record-business diatribe "The Million You Never Made," and a passel of songs that touch on DiFranco's outspoken bisexuality (notably "Light of Some Kind"). The difference is that the pieces fit together more smoothly than before. The relative lack of jagged edges makes the powerful emotions of the songs that much more intense. NOT A PRETTY GIRL is a masterpiece of '90s folk-rock. SKU: 1071570

Other Women, The
The Corn Sisters: Carolyn Mark, Neko Case (vocals, guitar, percussion). Recorded live at Hattie's Hat, Seattle, Washington in May 1998. The Corn Sisters are Neko Case and Carolyn Mark, a couple of alternative rock converts to traditional country music. (Case has two very fine albums on Bloodshot). Like most converts, they're pretty zealous, but with their excellent voices, harmonies, warmth, and humor, the Corn Sisters are way out in front of most of their altcountry peers. OTHER WOMEN was recorded live in a Seattle restaurant, and what it lacks in fidelity it more than makes up for in enthusiasm, impertinence, and unadulterated vocal power. Case has an Appalachian wail like a young Loretta Lynn that lets you know she's not a woman to be trifled with. Mark is Patsy Cline to Case's Lynn--sensuous, robust and worldly-wise. High points include a poignant version of Nick Lowe's "Endless Grey Ribbon," the sanctified gospel rave-up "This Little Light," and the mirthful, insanely catchy "Corn on the Cob." For those whose definition of country leans toward Dwight Yoakam, Kitty Wells, and The Carter Family, OTHER WOMEN is highly recommended. SKU: 1052071

Tempted And Tried
Steeleye Span's 15th album is yet another excellent collection of rocked-up traditional-style British folk songs. While the group's later albums don't hold the surprise of earlier classics like HARK! THE VILLAGE WAIT or PLEASE TO SEE THE KING, they're nonetheless remarkable. The bell-toned voice of lead singer Maddy Prior is one of the most distinctive and wonderful in British folk, up there with Sandy Denny, Norma Waterson and Prior's occasional collaborator June Tabor. Prior's vocals dominate these 11 songs, but the distinctive fiddle of Peter Knight is equally impressive. Highlights here include the murder ballad "Jack Hall" and an impressiveversion of the hoary standby "The Fox." If you don't like Steeleye Span, TEMPTED AND TRIED won't change your mind, but fans should adore it. SKU: 1066149

Blow By Blow [Hybrid SACD]
Also available with WIRED and THERE AND BACK in a CD 3-pack. Personnel: Jeff Beck (guitar); Max Middleton (keyboards); Phil Chenn (bass); Richard Bailey (drums, percussion). Recorded at AIR Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Realizing the overwhelming response he received in concert with his extended instrumental breaks, Beck finally bit the bullet and released his first all-instrumental work in 1975. The jazz-rock tour de force BLOW BY BLOW was produced by Beatles mainman George Martin and proved that Beck's six-string skills could easily carry an album. Completely inspired by the challenge and surrounded by a stellar band and solid compositions, Beck lets loose throughout. The result is one of his very best works. Highlights include the funky opening track "You Know What I Mean," a pair of Stevie Wonder-penned tracks ("Cause We've Ended as Lovers" and"Thelonious"), and the classic rock-radio staple "Freeway Jam." Darkness On The Edge Of Town
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Steve Van Zandt (guitar); Clarence Clemons (saxophone); Roy Bittan (piano); Danny Federici (organ); Garry Tallent (bass); Max Weinberg (drums). Recorded at TheRecord Plant, New York, New York. This was the album after the famous Jon Landau statement came to pass, and although there are still many references to cars and girls it is a blistering album. It has a similar energy that was later to be found on The River. He states in 'Something In The Night', 'soon as you've got something they send someone to try and take it away'. He repeated the themes again and again, and we loved it; maybe his fall from grace is because we ultimately can get by with just one song about cars and girls. SKU: 1083085

Here's To Life
Cassette avaialble on Telarc (33357). NOTES: Also available in a 3-pack with LIVE AT ORCHESTRA HALL, DETROIT and FEEL THE SPIRIT. Personnel includes: Joe Williams (vocals); The Robert Farnon Orchestra. Recorded at Studio One, CTS Studios, London, England on August 16-18, 1993. Here's to Joe Williams! On this 1993 release for Telarc Records, 75-year-old Williams sits back and muses over life and love with all his winning warmth and grit, to a backdrop of Robert Farnon's lush orchestrations. Williams is a master interpreter of song. His performances here are hauntingly restrained and almost conversational. His voice remains a magically smooth and flexible instrument capable of sudden acrobatic swoops-sometimes to high Bb, to make just the right point. On HERE'S TO LIFE, Williams experiments with this "vocal stretching" and credits Bobby McFerrin in the album notes for his inspiration. The result is like listening to a winding country stream. Williams' performances are exquisitely sophisticated and never sentimental. The recording concentrates on ballads, including Williams' heartbreakingly beautiful "Here's to Life"-which later inspired Shirley Horn to recordthe song with a similar arrangement-and the testimonial "What a Wonderful World." The whole work has the feel of Billie Holiday's legendary LADY IN SATIN album, without the vocal raggedness and as seen from the point of view of an optimist. LIFE is a masterpiece of song interpretation of a different kind. SKU: 4126619

Last Chance For A Thousand Years (His Greatest Hits Of The 90's)
Full title: Last Chance For A Thousand Years: Dwight Yoakam's Greatest Hits From The 90's. Personnel includes: Dwight Yoakam (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); Pete Anderson (electric & baritone guitars, electric sitar, harmonica); Al Perkins (lap steel & pedal steel guitars, banjo, dobro); Tom Brumley (steel guitar); Scott Joss (mandolin, fiddle); Tim O'Brien (mandolin, background vocals); Don Reed (fiddle); Skip Edwards (keyboards); Charles Domanico (acoustic bass); Taras Prodaniuk (4- & 6-string basses); Jeff Donovan (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Scott Humphrey (drum programming); Tommy Funderburk, Jim Lauderdale, Roger Miller, Emily Saliers, Amy Ray, Beth Anderson, Carl Jackson, Jim Haas (background vocals). Engineers include: Judy Clapp. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Discounting left fielders like Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle, one could make a convincing case for Yoakam as the lone savior of mainstream country in the '90s. Modernizing the Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens (who gets a mention in the opening cut "Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose"), Yoakam combined a traditionalist twang with a rocker's bite and some spectacular songs for that rare marriage of commercial and aesthetic success. This compilation of Yoakam's '90s hits proves that, like any good country singer, Yoakam excels at evocations of heartbreak--heplays the lovelorn sap to perfection (and with just a pinch of irony) on "Pocket of a Clown," "Sorry You Asked?" and others, over classic honky tonk arrangements. His rock & roll side emerges on the blazing "Fast As You" and the natural fit of the previously unreleased neo-rockabilly "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (yes, the Queen song). The other bonus cut, Waylon Jennings's tearjerker "I'll Go Back To Her" points to Yoakam's country outlaw roots. The memorability of each song is a testament to Yoakam's compositional savvy and LAST CHANCE is a perfect way to get acquainted with the man who brought integrity to country radio. SKU: 3102150

You Had It Coming
Personnel includes: Jeff Beck (guitar); Imogean Heap (vocals); Jennifer Batten (guitar); Randy Hope-Taylor (bass); Steve Alexander(drums); Aiden Love (programming). "Dirty Mind" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. As with WHO ELSE, Jeff Beck's previous album, YOU HAD IT COMING finds the venerable axeman coaxing wildly imaginative squalls of noise over a rhythm section constructed from samples and tape loops, mostly with a techno beat (although the concluding "Suspension" is so laid back it's practically a ballad). There's a nod to his blues roots with a nicely fractured version of Muddy Waters' "Rollin' and Tumblin'," but most of the rest of the songs find him performing in a vaguely modal framework. Beck's dilemma has always been finding musicians capable of keeping up with him, largely because there really aren't any. He hasn't really solved that problem here, but it's nonetheless entertaining to hear him tread water. SKU: 1051515

Personnel: Tina Turner (vocals); John Myers (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Bryan Adams, Robert Cray, Jamie West-Oram, James Ralston (vocals, guitar); Kenny Moore, Don Snow, Ollie Marland (vocals, keyboards); Bob Feit (vocals, bass); David Bowie, Eric Clapton (vocals); Laurie Wisefield (guitar); Timmy Capello, Deric Dyer (saxophone, keyboards); Gary Barnacle (saxophone); Alan Clark (keyboards); Jack Bruno (drums); Steve Scales (percussion). Recorded live at N.E.C., Birmingham, Alabama; Camden Palace & Wembley Arena, London, England; Westfallenhalle, Dorimund, Germany; Isstadion, Stockholm, Sweden. Includes liner notes by Tina Turner. A slick, well programmed document of Turner's 87-88 World Tour. Disc one mostly consists of hits from her comeback period, with particularly strong versions of signature songs like "Private Dancer," "What's LoveGot to Do With It," and the unarguable "Better Be Good to Me." Disc two, however, has songs from her days with husband Ike (the autobiographical rocker "Nutbush City Limits"), '60s r&b classics ("Land of a Thousand Dances," Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour") and some celebrity duets. David Bowie drops by to co-croon his hit "Let's Dance," Eric Clapton and Robert Cray dispense hot guitar licks on, respectively, "Tearing Us Apart" and Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," and Bryan Adams nearly rips his lungs out trying to keep up with Tina on "It's Only Love." A very satisfying package. SKU: 1004698

Earphoria [PA]
Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar); James Iha (guitar);D'Arcy (bass); Jimmy Chamberlain (drums). First released in 1994 in VHS format as VIEUPHORIA, this collection of pre-MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS live tracks finds the groundbreaking Chicago quartet captured live during their marathon 1993-4 world tour in a variety of international settings, from London and Chicago to Spain and Japan. In addition to the original 10 live tracks featured on the video, including a half-time version of "Disarm" from British TV, and an unplugged "Cherub Rock" from a European MTV show, EARPHORIA features snippets of demos dotted throughout the proceedings, such as the opening "Sinfony" and the intriguing "Bugg Superstar," while the anthemic (and self-descriptive) closing instrumental jam "Why Am I So Tired" is something of a percussive tour-de-force for ace drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Also available in DVD format, the set will be an education for those who wish to delve a little deeper into the Pumpkins' oeuvre, as well as an obvious must-have for Pumpkins completists. Screen Behind The Mirror, The (Limited Edition)
Enigma: Elisabeth Houghton, Sandra Cretu, Ruth-Ann, Andru Donalds, Michael Cretu (vocals); Jens Gad (guitar). Recorded at A.R.T. Studios, Ibiza, Spain. There is a certain other-worldliness to the musical landscapes created by the artist also known as Michael Cretu. With Enigma, he is known for pioneering the synergy of traditional and world music with dance and electronica. Cretu's craftwork could be described as having taken ground broken by Tangerine Dream and adding mystic spirituality. "The Gate" opens dramatically with a classical-sounding chorus, then sliding into a combination of spokenand hauntingly sung vocals. Disguised as a modern pop song, "Push the Limits" does just that with powerful orchestration. "Camera Obscura" fuses Renaissance-era chorale with a pulsing dance groove and vocals that are played backwards. The results are almost beyond description. Lyrically, THE SCREEN BEHIND THE MIRROR incorporates contradictory metaphors, shadows of Eastern philosophy, and overtones of enlightenment. In a realm of endlessly derivative modern music, Enigma successfully draws upon many cultures and eras for a sound that is above all else, unique. SKU: 1027250

Nocturne [Digipak]
Personnel: Charlie Haden (bass); Joe Lovano, David Sanchez (tenor saxophone); Federico Britos Ruiz (violin); Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano); Pat Metheny (acoustic guitar); Ignacio Berroa (drums, percussion). Producers: Charlie Haden, Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Recorded at Criteria and The Hit Factory, Miami, Florida from August 27-31, 2000. Includes liner notes by Leonardo Acosta, Charlie Haden & Gonzalo Rubalcaba. NOCTURNE won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. Charlie Haden has a longstanding interest in Cuban and Central American music (most notably expressed on his LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA albums). Here, in the company of Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, he explores the lush, romantic aspects of the Cuban sound. A bracing and delicious sort of melancholy runs through these quiet pieces, calling the listener in ever closer. Half the set features Cuban ballads, the rest being a mix of originals (two by Haden, one by Rubalcaba) and four pieces of Mexican origin. The perfectly matched Haden and Rubalcaba are joined on NOCTURNE by drummer Ignacio Berroa. Guest appearances by tenor saxophonists Joe Lovano and David Sanchez, guitarist Pat Metheny, and violinist Federico Britas Ruiz add additional shadings that underscore the strong melodic sensibilities of this music. NOCTURNE combines the gentle, late-night moods of Haden's Quartet West with the Spanish derivations that haveinformed the bassist's vision over the course of his exhilarating career. SKU: 1059578

GREATEST HITS (AND SOME THAT WILL BE) lives up to its name, delivering 20 killer tracks from Willie's most fruitful era, the 1970s. During these years, Nelson successfully pushed the limits of commercial country music, tackling such themes as sexuality and vulnerability with a candor previously unheard in the genre. The result was "outlaw country," a movement so dubbed for its brazenness. The hallmarks of Nelson's sound--reedy vocals, quirky gut-string guitar solos, and a band that always sounds on the verge of falling apart without ever being remotely in danger of doing so--are all front and center on this disc. Nelson's greatness lies in his undeniable sincerity and in his mastery of various American genres: jazz, blues, Western swing, gospel, honky-tonk, even hints of rock and roll seamlessly rise to the surface when called for, then recede before they've outstayed their welcome. For those who hated Willie merely because he was so popular in the 1970s, here's the place to give him a second chance. You might be pleasantly surprised. Those who love Willie undoubtedly already know that herein lies the mother lode. SKU: 1000785

Box Car Racer [ECD]
Box Carr Racer: Thomas DeLonge (vocals, guitar); Dave Kennedy (guitar); Anthony Celestino (bass); Travis Barker (drums). Additional personnel: Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar, bass). Strictly a Blink-182 side project (featuring that band's guitarist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker), Box Car Racer doesn't stray too far from addressing the needs and concerns of the "other" band's coreteen fanbase. Choosing to leave behind the toilet humor and skate-punk swagger normally associated with Blink, this outing instead goes down the road of vulnerability and insecurity that makes up the dark side of adolescence. Not surprisingly, Box Car Racer's stylistic hard-wiring features plenty of harmonies, prickly riffs, and pounding rhythms that come to the fore on the funky "And I," the hard-charging time changes of the opening "I Feel So," and the raging hardcore of "My First Punk Song." Balancing out all this aggression are numbers where DeLonge swaps his electric guitar for an acoustic; heartfelt proclamations of love ("There Is") and the realization of life's fragility ("Letters To God"). Rounding out this self-titled debut are guest spots by Rancid's Tim Armstrong and A New Found Glory's Jordan Pundik (a chiming "Cat Like Thief"), and Blink bandmate Mark Hoppus ("Elevator"). BOX CAR RACER turns out to be an interesting visit to Blink-182's emerging serious side. SKU: 1073046

Misplaced Childhood [Remastered]
Marillion: Fish (vocals); Steve Rothery (guitar); Mark Kelly (keyboards); Pete Trewavas (bass); Ian Mosley (percussion). Recorded at Hansa Ton Studios, Berlin, Germany between March & May 1985. Includes liner notes by Robert Mead, Mark Wilkinson, Pete Trewavas, Mark Kelly, Steve Rothery. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew (1998, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Marillion were at the forefront of the brief progressive rock revival of the 80s, and as such had to endure constant critical carping about their similarities to Genesis. Led at this stage of their career by Fish, they reached a creative and commercial peak with this 1985 release, a concept album based loosely around the singer's childhood. What saved the album from empty bombast was Marillion's sudden emergence as a skilled and melodic rock group, exemplified by the UK hit single "Kayleigh". While nothingelse on the album was quite able to match this song, the rest is still worthy of re-investigation. SKU: 1042583

In Line
Personnel: Bill Frisell (acoustic & electric guitars); Arild Andersen (bass). Recorded at Talent Studio, Oslo, Norway on August 1982. This is the closest Bill Frisell has come to an actual solo album, though he is joined on half of the set by bass player Arild Andersen. Frisell's electric and acoustic guitars are multi-tracked throughout. The title piece uses light dissonances to especially shimmering and vibratory effect. IN LINE was produced by Manfred Eicher, whose customary pristine clarity makes an ideal setting for Frisell's subtly nuanced playing. Each of the nine pieces is distinct, but they also lend themselves to an over-arching feeling of connectedness. There is a real album identity to this work. Though quiet and meditative as both a guitarist and a composer, Frisell's style is broad enough to allow for a range of emotional settings--from introspective to celebratory. SKU: 1009796

Marble Index
Personnel includes: Nico (vocals, harmonium). Includes liner notes by Richard Williams. At the time that Nico released her first album, Chelsea Girl, in 1968, she was the toast of the Warhol crowd, a familiar face in the society pages, featuring in fashion magazines throughout the Western world. By the time The Marble Index appeared the following year, her record label advances went largely towards medical bills, as her beauty and talent diminished in the face of something very familiar to the Warhol crowd: a heroin habit. Produced by former Velvet Underground bandmate John Cale, The Marble Index establishedNico as a songwriter. Her gothic compositions, intoned in her unearthly voice, captured all too well the angst of one whose much-heralded looks hid a soul that was unable to allow itself to feel or express love. Time Pieces Vol.1 (The Best Of Eric Clapton)
Cassette available on Polydor (825 382). NOTES: TIME PIECES VOLUME 1 contains material recordedbetween 1970 and 1978. Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Delaney Bramlett, George Terry (guitar); Jim Price (trumpet); Bobby Whitlock (piano, organ, background vocals); Albhy Galuten (piano); Dick Sims (organ, keyboards); Carl Radle (bass); Jim Gordon, Jamie Oldaker (drums); Marcy Levy (background vocals). Producers: Delaney Bramlett, The Dominoes, Tom Dowd, Glyn Johns. Featuring tunes culled from a handful of albums released in the '70s, TIME PIECES is a great representation of Eric Clapton's transition from high-flying guitar hero to a more subdued and introspective singer/songwriter/interpreter. In embracing a style influenced by the Band and country singer Don Williams, Clapton's work became more diverse. When Slowhand wasn't turning J.J. Cale into a household name ("Cocaine," "After Midnight") he was doing the same thing for Bob Marley and reggae music. After taking Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" to the top of the charts in 1974, Clapton's immersion in this then-exotic genre further manifested itself on his versions of Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and the traditional gospel hymn "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." E.C.'s output during this period also documented the heartbreak ("Layla") and eventual triumph ("Wonderful Tonight") encountered in his pursuit of Patti Boyd (aka Mrs. George Harrison). SKU: 1004677
