Best Of Howard Jones, The
THE BEST OF HOWARD JONES includes one new track - "I.G.Y. (What A Beautiful World)." Although for fans of unpretentiously catchy commercial pop, all of Howard Jones' albums are worth owning, THE BEST OF HOWARD JONES is both a fine introduction and a worthy sampler of the best work of this underrated artist. Presented as a chirpy one-man electro-pop band on his 1984 debut HUMAN'S LIB (represented here by "New Song," "Pearl in the Shell" and "What Is Love?"), Jones quickly grew into his own. Less annoying than Phil Collins and less full of himself than George Michael, Jones' mid-to-late-'80s string of hit singles--including "Things Can Only Get Better," "You Know I Love You...Don't You?" and the exhilarating "Everlasting Love"--stacks up against them both when it comes to smart hooks, smooth production and general unforgettablility. This 18-track compilation also includes a handful of new tracks, including a terrific andsurprising cover of Donald Fagen's post-Steely Dan hit "IGY (What A Beautiful World)." SKU: 4123360

Nomad Soul
Personnel: Baaba Maal (vocals, guitar); Luciano (vocals); Assane N'Doye Cisse (guitar, sabar); Barry Reynolds (guitar); Kauwding Cissokho (kora); Tania Lo (saxophone, background vocals); Baayo Ndiaye (soprano & tenor saxophones); Jon Hassell (trumpet); Hilaire Chaby Harry (keyboards); Elhadji Niang (bass); Alioune Diouf (drums); Bakhane Seck (percussion, djembe); Ndongo Mbaye, Mabaye Diagne (percussion, sabar); Thio Mbaye (djembe); Massamba Diop, Badara Seck, Luis Jardim, Groko, Barou Sal (percussion); Paul "Groucho" Smykle (programming); Mansour Seck, The Screaming Orphans (background vocals). Producersinclude: Simon Emmerson, Paul "Groucho" Smykle, Brain Eno, Howie B, Jon Hassell. Senegalese singer Baaba Maal's latest album is the result of a merging of cultures and was a collective effort on the part of several well-known British producers (including Brian Eno) as well as a range of musical collaborators. NOMAD SOUL is an explosion of joyous sound, with a tendency to emphasize the songs' melodies and vocal harmonies rather than their rhythms and beats, which Maal keeps understated compared to many African musical traditions. A mix of Senegalese and English vocals adds to the sense of multi-cultural exploration; "Souka Nayo (I Will Follow You)," has strong Celtic influences, which are more subtle on "Cherie," and the lovely, acoustic "Koni." Maal's breath-taking vocals take center stage on one song after another, yet they seem to be energized and held aloft by the music and voices of his collaborators. SKU: 1000653

Fuaim
Clannad: Maire Brennan, Enya Brennan, Paul Brennan, Ciaran Brennan, Padraig Duggan, Noel Duggan. Recorded at Windmill Studios, Dublin, Ireland. Includes liner notes by Paul Wexler. 1982's FUAIM--pronounced "foom," and meaning"sound"--is a defining album for Clannad. The Brennan siblings, having made six previous albums of fairly traditional Celtic folk, here went into something largely different, combining traditional-style Irish folk melodies with expansive, largely electronic arrangements heavy on lush, drifting keyboard sounds, odd percussion and heavily-reverbed overdubbed harmonies. The youngest Brennan sister, who would later achieve worldwide fame as new age songstress Enya, makes her only appearance as a member of Clannad on this album, singing lead on two Gaelic-language tracks, "An Tull" and "Buaiereadh An Phosta." One can only wonder how influential she was in the group's change of direction, as the ideas first explored here are the ones which define her later solo albums. SKU: 1011639

Spacetime
Mujician: Paul Dunmall (soprano & tenor saxophones); Keith Tippett (piano); Paul Rodgers (double bass); Tony Levin (drums). Recorded at Victoria Rooms, Bristol, United Kingdom on February 24, 2001. Settle down, King Crimson fans, the Tony Levin playing drums here is not the KC bassman (nor is bassist Paul Rogers on holiday from Bad Company, for that matter), for Mujician is made up not of journeymen rockers, but some of England's most esteemed free jazz/avant garde improvisers. The quartet has been plying its expansive, exploratory tradefor years, spearheaded by the searching saxophones of Paul Dunmall and the technicolor piano of UK jazz icon Keith Tippett. On SPACETIME, as ever, the band makes the most of its greatest asset; the ability (and inclination) to listen to one another. The album is made up of two lengthy pieces, each broken down into several sections that find the musicians alternately kicking up a dust storm, pulling back for some pointillistic scene-setting, and creating contrapuntally woven tapestries in which each instrument's statements are balanced interdependently on the others. Ultimately, it may be restrictive to label Mujician's work anything so idiomatic as "jazz." Rather, consider SPACETIME a rich, nuanced example of modern improvisation within a jazz quartet framework. Greatest Hits (Chapter 1)
Backstreet Boys: Kevin Richardson, Howard "Howie D" Dorough, Alexander James "AJ" McLean, Brian "B-Rok" Littrell, Nick Carter. Producers include: Max Martin, Rami, Kristian Lundin, Franciz & Le Point, Timmy Allen. Though it may seem as if the Backstreet Boys have been around forever, it's only been since 1995, as evidenced by the pictures from their first-ever photo shoot featured in THE HITS CD booklet. Mirroring their artistic development through the years, the hairstyles and clothes may have changed, but the group's essence, catnip to teens for over half a decade, remains the same--pure, unadulterated pop. These 13 tracks are proof, if any were needed, of the group's undisputed mastery of late-'90s pop and their ability to morph, with chameleon-like ease, between the hip-hop-lite of "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," the ABBA-style pop of "Quit Playing Games," and the tearful balladry of "I Want it That Way." Credit is also due to their Svengali, theSweden-based pop wizard Max Martin, who masterminds most of these cuts and gives them a depth and musicality lacking in the work of many of the Boys' peers. Placebo
Placebo: Brian Molko (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, keytar, bass); Stefan Olsdal (acoustic & electric guitars, Moog, piano, Rhodes electric piano, bass); Robert Schultzberg (drums, percussion, didgeridoo). Recorded at Westland Studios, Dublin, Ireland in spring 1996. An interesting combination ofa Swede, a Swiss and an American, meeting in Luxembourg and sounding very British, in a post-punk sort of way. The group were signed for a reputed large advance, partly owing to the marketable, androgynous Brian Molko. However, the quality of their songwriting was demonstrated on their excellent debut. "Nancy Boy," a surprising hit single, is in fact one of the lesser tracks on the album. There is much more depth to be found in "Bionic," "Come Home" and "I Know," the latter complete with didgeridoo. After such a sparkling debut the cynical jury is already out. SKU: 1004736

Jazz Profile
Personnel includes: Horace Silver (piano); Art Blakey, Blue Mitchell, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Tom Harrell. Recorded between 1952 and 1976. This Blue Note compilation traces the scope of Horace Silver's career, from his beginnings as a leader up to the large ensemble work he recorded in the mid-'70s. The album opens with "Safari," an uptempo bop number from 1952. Silver's ensemble writing is assured, but only hints at the sophisticated sound that was eventually to become his trademark. In "Enchantment," he starts to explore formal possibilities, employing big band techniques in a small group setting. Silver's classic quintet, with Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook on trumpet and sax respectively, is well-represented with "Finger Poppin'"and "Where You At?" Silver's distinctive style, with his grumbling left hand exclamations, is apparent on both tunes. "Song For My Father" is also here, followed by "Blue Silver," a contemplative, exquisitely arranged mid-'60s composition. Silver's solo, as usual, is luminous. The album closes with two ambitious tunes from 1976. While it's interesting to hear these non-Silver large group arrangements, they only serve to highlight the distinctiveness of his many small group charts. SKU: 1077163

Do The Boogie (B.B.King's Early 50's Classics)
DO THE BOOGIE! contains tracks from 1954 to 1957, including alternate takes and unreleased tracks. Personnel includes: B.B. King (vocals, guitar); George Coleman (alto & tenor saxophones); John Alexander, Connie Mack Booker (piano); Charles Crosby (congas). Producers: Joe Bihari, Maxwell Davis. Compilation producer: Ray Topping. Includes liner notes by Ray Topping and Carol Fawcett. All tracks have been digitally remastered. DO THE BOOGIE!, a collection of early B.B. King recordings, allows listeners to hear the blues master developing the sound that eventually made him the blues' biggest star. But DO THE BOOGIE! is not merely of interest to blues fanatics and historians: measured by any yardstick, these are smoking hot blues records. Many of the tracks approximate the West Coast 'jump' blues sound popularized by Louis Jordan, while others are classic Memphis shuffles and boogies. These tunes feature a much raunchier guitar sound than the one King later became associated with; on most, King shares soloing duties with the excellent saxophonist George Coleman. This set was originally released by the meticulous British label Ace, and as a result both track selection and mastering on this disc are extremely satisfying. Anthologist Ray Topping sifted through King's voluminous 1950s unreleased recordings to find the best complete alternate takes, ignoring the single releases (which were created by editing several takes together and are thus less 'authentic.') As an added bonus, the front cover has a very cool photo of King on stage in a jacket, tie, and Bermuda shorts! SKU: 1004345

Wild Thornberrys Movie, The
Producers: George Acogny, Jonathan McHugh. To go along with the jungle motif of this Nickelodeon-produced animated feature, we're presented with a soundtrack album full of African-flavored pop. Who better to lead that particular charge than Paul Simon, whose GRACELAND helped pave the way for Afro-pop crossover in the US. His "Father and Daughter" is a gentle but spirited song about the parent-child bond. A pairing of jamband hero Dave Matthews and African diva Angelique Kidjo ("Iwoya") makes more sonic sense than one might suppose. Ska-punks Reel Big Fish offer a rather ill-advised take on the Specials' "Monkey Man," but a smart pair of Youssou N'Dour collaborations (one with Sting, one with Peter Gabriel) soon set things right. The Pretenders' "Get Out of London" doesn't havemuch to do with Africa, but it's one of their better latter-day tunes and a pleasure to hear. Ultimately, this disc cleaves pretty closely to the Anglo pop aesthetic, but the introduction of African elements throughout is strong enough to add a nice touch of exoticism. SKU: 1079901

Starlite Walker
Silver Jews: David Berman (vocals, guitar, piano, percussion); Steve Malkmus (guitar, piano, bass, percussion, background vocals); Bob Nastanovich (drums, synthesizer, percussion, background vocals); John Steve West (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Doug Easley (pedal steel guitar, whistling); Dan Mackta (Wurlitzer piano); Andra Sherman (triangle); Davis McCain (noise). Producers: Doug Easley, Davis McCain, Silver Jews. Engineers: Doug Easley, Davis McCain, Silver Jews. Recorded at Easley Recording, Memphis, Tennessee in June 1994. David Berman and Stephen Malkmus, the principal Silver Jews, met at the University of Virginia in the late '80s, around the same time Malkmus was flying home to California on vacations and starting Pavement. The Silver Jews' first two EPs shared Pavement's noise-straddled, lo-fi aesthetic; on them, the Jews sounded like a scaled-back, literary Pavement. (Pavement, in turn, took on the Silver Jews' sense of lyrical exploration, and has continued traveling down that road deep into its career.) STARLITE WALKER is the Jews' first proper album, and it benefits from Pavement's concurrent emergence as an indie-rock powerhouse. Pavement boys Steve West and Bob Nastanovich come aboard with real percussion and quaint touches like pedal steel guitar and toy piano, giving theSilver Jews a wider musical scope than previously attempted (to go along with studio production that adds miles and miles of clarity). But even as the Jews' country-rock tunage and offhanded rock references echo the "end of an era" calls of Pavement's CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN, Berman steers the songs toward thematic waters that aren't quite so pronounced. His songs have a novelistic flow, with meanings cast behind lyrical stories full of historical detail and rhymes that spin out of easy control. He seems to be playing the part of Robbie Robertson to Malkmus' Bob Dylan. SKU: 1061483

Take A Picture
Personnel: Margo Guryan (vocals); John Hill (guitar); Kirk Hamilton (flute, bass); Phil Bodner (oboe); Paul Griffin (keyboards); Buddy Saltzman (drums). Producers: John Hill, John Simon, David Rosner. Engineers: Fred Catero, Glen Kolotkin, Lou Waxman. Originally released on Bell Records. Includes liner notes by David Rosner. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Sometimes when an cultily-adored obscurity is reissued, it becomes clear that a lot (if not all) of its mystiquewas due to its rarity. However, this time the buzz is justified: TAKE A PICTURE is a '60s soft pop masterpiece. The sound is a delightful collision, with surprisingly funky electric piano and Steve Cropper-style guitar leads dueling over prominent, clunky drums and unobtrusive orchestrations. Over it all, Guryan's breathy overdubbed vocals--her wispy, wobbily-pitched babytalk style was clearly heavily influenced by bossa nova pioneer Astrud Gilberto, who covered this album's dreamy "Think of Rain"--give the album its most attractive feature. Guryan is as accomplished a songwriter as she is a singer; her main influences seem to be Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bacharach/David, and that combination of bossa nova and sleek pop sophistication is the watchword. Sweetly poppy, lightly jazzy, and completely irresistible, this is sunshine pop at its finest. SKU: 1050706

Pneumonia
This is an Enhanced CD whichcontains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Whiskeytown: Ryan Adams (vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica); Mike Daly (guitar, pedal steel & lap steel guitars, dulcimer, mandolin, keyboards, background vocals); Brad Rice (guitar); Caitlin Cary (fiddle, background vocals). Additional personnel: Tommy Stinson (guitar, dobro); Ethan Johns (guitar, mandolin, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion); James Iha (guitar, background vocals); Richard Causon (keyboards); James "Jumbo" Aumonier (celeste); Jennifer Causon (bass). Principally recorded at Dreamland Studios, West Hurley, New York. Though Whiskeytown singer Ryan Adams has been anointed by the NO DEPRESSION set as the Bob Dylan of alt-country, his non-world-shaking solo debut proved that despite the boy wonder's talents, Whiskeytown is very much a band. That fact is amply borne out by PNEUMONIA, which strolls amiably down the neo-Americana highway with taste and modest invention (no mean feat in that crowded field). The opener "Ballad of Carol Lynn" suggests nothing so much as Steve Forbert fronting the STAGE FRIGHT-era Band. "Don't Be Sad" answers the question "what would Oasis sound like as an open-hearted American country-rock band?" "Under Your Breath" is a quiet, folkie number reminiscent of Adams's solo work. "Mirror, Mirror" gets decidely Beatlesque, while "Paper Moon" goes for a Cuban-flavored feel. Despite all these stylistic detours, though, the main course plotted on PNEUMONIA is a sunny, jangly roots-rock expansive enough to encompass all the aforementioned influences and Adams's lyrical concerns while still maintaing a common sonic thread.
