Midnight Love [Remastered]
Also available in a 2-CD set entitled MIDNIGHT LOVE & THE SEXUAL HEALING SESSIONS. Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, Fender Rhodes piano, organ, synthesizer, drums, vibraphone, bass synthesizer, bongos, congas, orchestra bells, glockenspiel, tambourine, percussion); Gordon Banks (guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, bass, drums, background vocals); Bobby Stern (harmonica, tenor saxophone); Joel Peskin (alto & tenor saxophones); David Stout and The L.A. Horn Section (horns); James Gadson (drums); Harvey Fuqua (background vocals). Recorded at Studio Katy, Ohaine, Belgium. Leaving the safety and familiarity of Tamla/Motown has seen many artists take a flight to obscurity. Gaye turned it on its head and madehis most successful album for over ten years. The pivotal track is "Sexual Healing," an idea given to him by his biographer David Ritz and co-written with Odell Brown. This track alone is worth the price of the album (even though it was a single). It oozes greatness with every second and was the last great Marvin Gaye song. And for the record, he played drums, piano, organ, bells, synths and bongos. A premier voice lost to the world. SKU: 1042461

Neon Ballroom
Silverchair: Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar); Chris Joannou (bass); Ben Gillies (drums). Additional personnel: Sweep (vocals); John Harding, Fiona Ziegler, Carl Pini, Alexandra D'Elia, Leni Ziegler, Emma Hayes, George Lentz (violin); Jane Scarpantoni, Leah Jennings (cello); Jane Rosenson (harp); David Helfgott, Robert Woolf, Chris Abrahams (piano); Jim Moginie (keyboards); The New South Wales Public School Singers. When the youthful Silverchair first appeared in the landscape-changing wake of NEVERMIND, they were solidly in the Cobain-inspired grunge mold, coming off as young disciples worshipping at the Nirvana altar with little of their own to bring to the Seattle Sound party. In '99, with Cobain long gone and grunge a distant memory, NEON BALLROOM appeared to be a bridge between Silverchair's copycat beginnings and a more adventurous future. While the heavy riffs, raspy vocalsand Cobainish melodies of yesteryear are still in evidence here, the sound is greatly expanded. From a string section to delicate acoustic passages and even an appearance by classical pianist David Helfgott (of Shine fame), Silverchair works overtime to broaden their sonic horizons. Boogie Nights
Taken from the film of the same name, BOOGIE NIGHTS is a compilation overflowing with the "why worry" attitude of disco that is a perfect complimentto the rise and fall of fictional porn star Dirk Diggler. Hand-picked by writer-producer Paul Thomas Anderson, the songs are used as cues for characters like porn star Roller Girl (Melanie's "Brand New Key") who does her thing without removing her skates, and they sound like they were recorded specifically for sex scenes (c.f. the moan-filled "Jungle Fever"). The remainder of this soundtrack shows Thomas's nose for the funkier side of Marvin Gaye ("Got To Give It Up [Part 1]"), The Commodores ("Machine Gun") and McFadden & Whitehead ("Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now"). Echoes
ECHOES includes tracks from Clark's 1967 solo album ECHOES (WITH THE GODSIN BROTHERS), a 1967 single, and demo versions of other tracks. Includes liner notes by Sid Griffin. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). ECHOES is a quietly gorgeous best of documenting the songwriting prowess of the Byrds co-founder Gene Clark between late 1964 and 1968. The first two tracks are rough (but entertaining) rehearsal takes by the original Byrds, recorded before they signed with Columbia and hit big with "Mr. Tambourine Man." There are also four selections from the Byrds' first album, including the ethereally beautiful "Here Without You." The rest of the disc consists of Clark's first solo album, with several of the cuts remixed with a slightly more modern sound. The music is mostly proto-country rock, the sort of thing the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers would get the credit for inventing, although there's evidencehere that Clark got there first. The album also includes both sides of Clark's unreleased 1967 single "Only Colombe," a magnificent baroque psychedelic pop confection that could be Bob Dylan fronting the Left Banke. SKU: 1011618

Live At The Royal Albert Hall [Remastered]
Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Keith Emerson (keyboards); Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). Recorded live at Royal Albert Hall, London, England in October 1992. This 1992 concert recording coincides with the revitalized group's return to the studio on BLACK MOON. There are a few cuts from that album included here, but the lion's share of the performance is given over to classic songs from ELP's '70s recordings. Several facets of the band's sound are represented here, fromthe driving rock of "Karn Evil No. 9" to the inventive, idiosyncratic prog excursions of "Knife Edge" and "Tarkus." ELP's passion for rocking up the classics can be heard here in a medley including Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man." Greg Lake's bittersweet folkie balladry is present in the hits "Still...You Turn Me On" and "Lucky Man." The highlight of the evening, however, must have been "Pirates." While obscure to the casual listener, this epic piece is beloved by hardcore ELP fans for its broad orchestral sweep and vivid narrative of the ups and downs of a group of cutthroat scavengers out on the open seas. Its grand scale perfectly suits and ideally summarizes the most appealing aspects of ELP--ambition, bravura, and an almost 19th-century kind of romanticism. SKU: 1066743

Sunshine On Leith
The Proclaimers: Charlie Reid (vocals, guitars); Craig Reid (vocals). Additional personnel: Stuart Nisbet (mandolin, penny whistle); Gerry Hogan (steel guitar); Steve Shaw (fiddle); Dave Whetstone (melodeon); Pete Wingfield (keyboards); Phil Cranham (bass); Paul Robinson (drums). Originally released on Chrysalis (21668). SUNSHINE ON LEITH continues in much the same vein as Craig and Charlie Reed's debut, THIS IS THE STORY, with inventive harmonies, blue-eyed soul, and straight-ahead acoustic songs. The brothers' excellent, hook-heavy tunes and distinctive vocals, heavily flavored by their appealing Scottish diction, are rooted in folk. Here, the song structures and harmonies are high caliber coffeehouse fare, and the acoustic guitars loom large; the sound is expanded and strengthened by electric guitars, piano, violin, and a tight rhythm section. "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" sets the tone for the album with its infectious, punchy chorus and the brothers' close, interlocking harmony. Though singalong barroom ditties such as "Cap in Hand" and "Oh Jean" gloss the duo's native musical heritage, there is also a noticeable influence of American musical forms. '50s and '60s rock &roll crops up in "I'm On My Way," while country music seems to inform "It's Saturday Night." Even some of the more overt folk balladry is given the down-home tang of a steel guitar, as on "My Old Friend the Blues" and the title track. SUNSHINE finds The Proclaimers' sound much matured and just as enjoyable as before. SKU: 1002841

Punch Bowl, The
He’s a talented multi-instrumentalist playingguitar, violin and viola over the 10 tracks, and with his background in folk you’d expect this disc to have a strong traditional feel, and to some extent it does, but this is really a singer/songwriter disc with an ‘English feel’. Where most US singer/songwriter discs have subtle elements of trad country in melody and instrumentation, this disc does the same but with the English tradition, it’s subtle but definitely there, sometimes in melodic structure, or the percussive guitar and violin work. It’s a striking and confident approach, and one that demands the listener’s attention throughout. SKU: 6561460

I Get Wet
Personnel includes: Andrew W.K. (vocals); Tony Allen, Chuck Morgan, Jimmy Coup, E. Pain (guitar); Sam Revelli, Frank Vierti, Mario Dane (piano, keyboards); Mike David, Chris Chaney (bass); Gary Novak, Brett Lee (drums). Producers include: Andrew W.K., Mario Dane, Scott Humphrey, John Fields, Frank Vierti. Engineers include: F. Gryner, Jeff Burns, Robert Thompson. Rocking, retro, with an unimpeachable pop sensibility, it's hard to see how anyone could fail to be charmed by Andrew W.K.'s major label debut, which contains more rock anthems than a brace of Oasis albums and at a decidedly higher octane. "Party Til You Puke" has elements of cookie monster-type thrash metal, while "Got To Do It" conjures memories of dear, dead Joey Ramone, but mostly I GET WET is full of the kind of teen-friendly hard rock that'll get you into trouble with your parents and have the neighbors banging on the walls. Pinmonkey
Pinmonkey: Chad Jeffers (acoustic guitar, lap steel, banjo, dobro); Michael Reynolds (vocals, guitar); Rick Schell (acoustic guitar, drums, percussion, background vocals); Michael Jeffers (bass). Additional personnel: Dolly Parton (vocals); Bob Britt (acoustic & electric 12 string guitars, electric guitar); Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Paul Worley (acoustic & electric guitar); Al Perkins (electric guitar); Rusty Young (banjo, mandolin); Rick Scaggs (mandolin); Michael Webb (Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond B-3 organ, farfisa organ). Recorded at The Money Pit, Nashville, Tennessee. The driving country swing of Pinmonkey's eponymous major label debut is the key to their unique sound, which combines a smattering of alternative rock with mainstream songwriting smarts in an irresistibly commercial whole. With a song roster that combines Dolly Parton's melancholy "Falling Out of Love With Me" and a rocking version of the Staple Singers' "Stay With Us" with self-penned works such as singer Michael Reynolds's trad-sounding "Jar of Clay" and those of more conventional Music Row songwriters, the album hangs together because it's being performed by a real band, not just a collection of session musicians. Parton herself contributes background vocals on her composition, but Pinmonkey are in no need of guest appearances to prop them up on this freewheeling and self-assured debut. Reynolds' vocals combine a pure countrysound with a youthful appeal, and the band's take on Nashville country is unique enough to catch the ear of even the most jaded listener. SKU: 1079759

New Day Has Come, A [SACD]
Personnel includes: Celine Dion (vocals); Dorian Cheah (guitar, violin); Michael Thompson, Paul Jackson Jr (guitar); Felipe Elgueta, Simon Franglen, Guy Roche (programming); Chantal Kreviazuk, Richard Page, Sam Watters, Mary Griffin, Sue Ann Carwell, Yvonne Williams, Joey Diggs, John Stoddast (background vocals). Producers include: Ric Wake, Gerald De Palmas, Robert "Mutt" Lange, Simon Franglen, Anders Bagge. This album represents Celine Dion's return to recording after a lengthy hiatus (nobody ever believed that "retirement" guff) taken to spend time with her family. As such, the aptly titled A NEW DAY HAS COME finds everybody's favorite French Canadian diva audibly reveling in her return to the vocation for which she was born. The title track finds Dion's elegant voice resplendent amid a pool of twinkling synthesizers, full of energy and joy. "Right in Front of You" opens with some attention-grabbing violin-sawing before giving way to a Euro-synth sound that falls halfway between power ballad and dance tune a la Cher. There's no question about the balladic nature of "Have You Ever Been in Love," it's the kind ofheart-on-sleeve tune Dion's big, soaring voice was made for. Elsewhere, Dion stretches out a bit, touching on R&B with "Rain, Tax (It's Inevitable)" and a poignant version of Eden Ahbez's standard "Nature Boy," but that familiar vocal stamina is consistent throughout A NEW DAY HAS COME. Bootleg Series Vol.1-3, The (Rare & Unreleased 1961-1991)
Full title: The Bootleg Series, Volumes 1-3 (Rare and Unreleased) 1961-1991. THE BOOTLEG SERIES, VOLUMES 1-3 consists mostly of previously-unreleased studio outtakes. It also include demos and alternate versions of released material, and a handful of live tracks. Personnel includes: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Kenny Rakin, Charles Brown, III, Steven Soles, Bobby Neuwirth, Danny Kortchmar, Steve Ripley (guitar); Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar); David Mansfield (mandolin); Scarlet Rivera (violin); Paul Griffen (piano, keyboards);Alan Clark (organ, keyboards); Ben Tench (organ); Barry Beckett, Roy Bittan (keyboards); Joseph Macho, Jr., Harvey Brooks, Russell Bridges, Tony Brown, Rob Stoner, Tim Drummond (bass); Bobby Gregg, Russ Kunkel, Howie Wyeth, Jim Keltner (drums); Gary Burke (congas); Clydie King, Regina Havis, Carolyn Dennis (background vocals); Mark Knopfler, Eric Weissberg, Pick Withers, Jennifer Warnes, Mick Taylor, Robbie Shakespeare, Sly Dunbar, Full Force, Little Steven, Daniel Lanois, Mason Ruffner, Cyril Neville. Producers include: John Hammond, Tom Wilson, Bob Johnson, Don DeVito, Jerry Wexler. Compilation producer: Jeff Rosen. Recorded between 1961 and 1989. Includes a 68-page booklet with song-by-song notes by John Bauldie. Dylan proved to be not only one of the most bootlegged of 20th Century performers, but also one of the first (GREAT WHITE WONDER was one of the releases that turned bootlegging from a pastime into an industry). Over the years, Dylan's legions of fans rabidly traded recordings of live shows, out-takes, demos and other rare material. THE BOOTLEG SERIES attempts to supply the definitive collection of what had been bootlegged material. Its three discs move along chronologically, spanning the length of Dylan's career and providing candid, previously verboten glimpses into his creative process, and consequently, his musical genius. The first disc features some intriguing versions of traditional tunes like "He Was a Friend Of Mine" and "House Carpenter," and some obscure cuts from his "protest" period, such as "Paths of Victory" and "Who Killed Davy Moore?" Disc two finds him in his prime, moving from alternative versions of HIGHWAY 61 material to radically recast tunes from the sublime BLOOD ON THE TRACKS. The gems on the third disc are the eerie ballad "Blind Willie McTell," inexplicably cut from the INFIDELS sessions, and the newest song on this collection, "Series of Dreams," a swirling, surreal look back at a lifetime on the edge. THE BOOTLEG SERIES is a must for any serious Dylan fan. SKU: 4123259

Bridges (The Best Of The Private Music Recordings)
Personnel includes: Ravi Shankar (vocals, sitar, synthesizer); Hemangini Desai (vocals); Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (guitar); Ronu Mazumdar, Kailash Sharma (flute); Swapan Chowdhury, Markandeya Mishra (tabla); George Harrison. Compilation producers: Anastasia Tsioulcas, Jon M. Samuels. Includes liner notes by Anastasia Tsioulcas. BRIDGES is a breathtaking overview of a mere three of the countless projects that sitar legend Ravi Shankar has worked on since his first appearance in the West in the 1930s. INSIDE THE KREMLIN, recorded in a Moscow in the throes of glasnost in 1988, features pieces that are simultaneously awe-inspiring and hypnotic. The more lighthearted tracks culled from TANA MANA include Shankar's good friend thelate George Harrison among several other rock luminaries, while modern classical composer Philip Glass is a collaborator on the selections taken from PASSAGES. All three albums are as distinct from each other as could be, but Shankar's vision, at once mischievous, playful, and deeply spiritual, is the unifying force that predominates. Though it has no pretensions to being a comprehensive overview of the Indian master, BRIDGES is a completely satisfying and absorbing glimpse of both Shankar's breadth of vision and his intense musical curiosity. Against
Sepultura: Andreas Kisser (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin guitar, sitar, bongos, timbales, djembe, shakers); Derrick Green (vocals, guitar, udu drum, snare drum); Paulo Jr. (berimbau, bass, fretless bass, udu drum); Igor Cavalera (drums, percussion, congas, timbales, djembe, shakers, bells, agogo, z-bell, crashers). KODO: Tersuro Naito, Eiichi, Hideyuki Saito, Tomohiro Mitome, Takesshi Arai, Takahito Nishino, Motofumi Yamaguchi (percussion). Additional personnel: Joao Gordo (vocals); Jason Newsted (baritone guitar, percussion, theremin, background vocals); Miles Tackett (cello); Judd Kallish (roto toms); Silvio Gomes (djembe); Zebrahead, Gringo (background vocals). Upon the departure of vocalist Max Cavalera, Sepultura hired Derrick Green. Derrick continues the powerful vocal style of his predecessor. The band also continues its tradition of strong metal albums, as AGAINSTis brutal and uncompromising. Sepultura is a metal band with a twist. They're Brazilian, and integrate their background into the thunderous attack. The result is an album with an appeal beyond the metal crowd. The title track is fast and punky. "Old Earth" has a murky feel, with some excellent bottom-heavy riffs. "Floaters in the Mud" features some excellent percussion work, including timbales, udu drum, and high djembe. "Common Bonds" has sweeping time changes and "Kamaitachi" brings a Japanese influence to the album, featuring the members of Japan's percussion ensemble Kodo. The highlight is "Hatred Aside," featuring Jason Newsted of Metallica on vocals, baritone guitar and theremin. His ferocious singing may indicate his frustration at the mellowing sound of his own group. "T3Rcermillennium" is the album's closer and is a beautiful instrumental piece. A world music metal album? AGAINST definitely meets the criteria, and is a bombastic, well-produced record as well. SKU: 1002606
