Bilingual [Remastered]
Pet Shop Boys: Neil Tennant, Chris Lowe. Additional personnel includes: Choral Academy Of Moscow, Sylvia Mason-James (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitars, background vocals); SheBoom (drums, percussion); Pete Gleadall (programming). Producers include: Pet Shop Boys, Chris Porter, Danny Tenaglia. Engineers include: Bob Kraushaar, Simon Cotsworth, Chris Porter. "To Step Aside" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. These electronic pop maestros write and arrange lush songs that are as elegant as they are streetwise. For BILINGUAL, they've recruited house-music maven Danny Tenaglia as a co-producer and, in a nod to trip-hop music, given themselves a stronger percussive presence. They've also immersed themselves in the music of Latin America. The lyrics on BILINGUALare peppered with Spanish phrases. A bossa nova influence is apparent on some songs; they even sample Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz. But the classic Pet Shop Boys sound remains in the detached voice of Neil Tennant, who is forever proving that it's possible to convey powerful emotions while singing so coldly. The Pet Shop Boys' typically gorgeous orchestrations are also present in full force. They continue to update their sound for the times without losing any of their original spark. SKU: 1060489

Fear Of Fours
Lamb: Louise Rhodes (vocals); Andrew Barlow. Additional personnel: Jimi Goodwin (guitar); Graham Clarke (violin); Ben Park (baritone saxophone); Kevin Davy (trumpet); Alice Kinloch (trombone, sousaphone); David Clack (horns); Mikey Wilson (drums); Crispin "Spry" Robinson (percussion). The Chainsaw Strings: Neil Catchpole (violin, viola); Niroshini Thambar, Ann Wood, Alison Dods, Matthew Ward (violin); John Rayson, Helen Kamminga (viola); Katheryn Locke, Tanera Dawkins, Cathy Rimer (cello); Jon Thorne, Alan Gibson (acoustic bass). Recorded at The Toyshop, Manchester, and the Townhouse, London, England. Dismissed in some quarters as a mere addition to the line of Portishead copyists, Lamb's eponymous debut album forced a swift reappraisal. Released three years later, and amidst high expectations, FEAR OF FOURS may not match that masterpiece, but Louise Rhodes and Andy Barlow continue to pursue a unique mix of jazz and drum-and-bass, strings and beats toscintillating effect. As a statement of intent, "Ear Parcel" epitomises the Lamb ethos, where tinkerbell chimes, a meandering double bass and percussive patter spar with brass squalls and increasingly bruising techno beats in an eight-minute bout. All that it lacks is Rhodes' voice, which moves closer to Billie Holiday than on previous outings, especially on the wonderfully manic "B-Line." Though not as stellar as its predecessor, FEAR OF FOURS is still a classy affair, not least on the heart-stopping, string-drenched "Bonfire." Both "Soft Mistake" and "Five" are atmospheric instrumentals of rare quality. Most startling of all is "Fly"; its clattering drum loop ricochets into an euphoric chorus and a plunging bassline for arguably the finest five minutes of 1999. SKU: 4127166

Treasure Planet
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a linkthe artist's website with the help of a browser. Original score composed by James Newton Howard. You've got to admire the entrepeneurial knowhow of the folks behind TREASURE PLANET. Not only have they presented an animated Disney film marketed as "a cross between STAR WARS and TREAUSURE ISLAND" and engaged uber-composer James Newton Howard to score the film, but they've engaged Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik to provide an anthemic power ballad for the soundtrack album's opener/selling point. Once you get past the head Goo Goo's contribution, and an uptempo bit of pop-rock from the group BBMak, it's Howard's show. There's no denying that JNH is a stone-cold pro, and he handily provides an orchestral score that matches the film's mood at every step, by turns both subtle and boisterous. Things close on an up note, as Howard's "Silver Leaves" moves seamlessly from sweet, gentle tones to roaring fanfare before closing out with some Celtic folk flavor. SKU: 1080189

Bittersweet [PA]
Includes bonus DVD. Personnel includes: Blue Cantrell (vocals); Lil' Kim, Fat Joe, Sean Paul, Ian Lewis (of Inner Circle) (rap vocals). Producers include: Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, Michelle Bell & Precision, Trixter, Mark Pitts, Mike City. Vocalist Blu Cantrell possesses one of the richest instruments in contemporary R&B--soulful and expressive, steeped in jazz but pop-radio-friendly. Her voice and upfront lyrics, as well as "Tricky" Stewart and "L.A." Reid's vivid production, charge up the proceedings even when the songwriting flags. Cantrell teams up with other top-notch singers for some fun duets. Lil' Kim raps the intro to "Impatient," a preening boast about female confidence and desire. "Breathe" features dancehall star Sean Paul; this playful breakup number resembles Cantrell's mega-selling payback song "Hit EmUp Style," although the lyrics are far more insightful and mature. Inner Circle's Ian Lewis brings his light reggae sound to the lovers' quarrel "Make Me Wanna Scream." While Cantrell's stellar sidekicks make things a little more interesting, she's clearly got the goods to carry a whole album on her own. SKU: 1084722

Recorded between 1941 and 1949. Includes liner notes by Stephanie L. Stein. The question when faced with a catalogue as enormous and diverse as that of Edward Kennedy Ellington is "Where to begin?" Though the answer is always a matter of personal taste, you could do much worse than RCA Victor's excellent compilation SOPHISTICATED LADY. These 19 tracks focus on the '30s and '40s heyday of Duke Ellington and his orchestra, when Ellington and musical partner Billy Strayhorn were tossing off timeless jazz masterpieces as quickly and effortlessly asLennon and McCartney wrote classic pop songs a generation later. Those standards are well accounted for here, from Ellington's theme song, "Take the A Train"; to Cootie Williams' trumpet showcase "Concerto for Cootie"; to trombonist Juan Tizol's "Caravan"; to a clutch of perfect gems like "Prelude to a Kiss," "Mood Indigo," and the definitive version of the title track. Night Dreamer
Personnel: Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); McCoy Tyner (piano); Reginald Workman (acoustic bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 29, 1964. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Shorter's Blue Note debut, NIGHT DREAMER, is a stunning statement from one of the premiere saxophonists and composers in the history of jazz. In 1964, after a long period as musical director for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and newly joining Miles Davis' quintet, Shorter was primed to enter the field as a major solo artist. His guests include Lee Morgan (trumpet), renewing the outstanding frontline the two formed in Blakey's band, and McCoy Tyner (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) from Coltrane's legendary quartet. The musical vision here, however, is Shorter's alone. Shorter's distinctive compositional style begins to take shape with the opening title track, a bouncing waltz with a dusky, modal flavor and a subtle rhythmic drive. Likewise, his arrangement of an "Oriental Folk Song" has a similar burnished tone with beautifully executed harmonies between Shorter and Morgan. Interestingly, the swinging "Black Nile" and "Armageddon" are very reflective of Shorter's previous tenure with Blakey while perpetuating the range of his newfound freedom with Davis' group. "Charcoal Blues" is the most traditional piece in the set but nevertheless gives us a sense of his moreindependent leanings. Also included are two takes of the graceful ballad "Virgo," a classic Shorter composition. SKU: 1075440

40 Oz. To Freedom
Sublime: Brad Nowell (vocals, guitar, percussion, samples, bass, congas); Eric Wilson (bass, organ, percussion, vocals, congas); Bud (drums, samples). Additional personnel includes: Adam (vocals, congas); Miguel (samples, guitar, vocals, piano, organ, sound effects). Recorded at Mambo, Long Beach, California. Originally released on Skunk (001). The sound is a blistering blend of ska, reggae, and '80s West Coast thrash a la Black Flag, with a healthy dose of spoken-word and rub-a-dub dancehall thrown in for good measure. This magnificent debut was required listening on the Southern California skateboard circuit. Fans of any of the aforementioned musical styles are likely to get a kick out of hearing singer Brad Nowell rollick through songs like "Smoke Two Joints." The attack is a pure assault of youthful energy, almost over-the-top, but controlled, always reigned in by the rhythm, which rules. Samples abound, as Sublime pays tribute to its musical idols in true '90s fashion: by including chunks of their songs. Even the Grateful Dead gets a nod. SKU: 1069448

Fans
Personnel: Malcolm McLaren, Betty Ann White, Debbie Cole, Michael Austin, Angie B., Valerie Walters, Diane Garisto (vocals); Robby Kilgore, Stephen Hague, Walter Turbitt (various instruments); Jimi Tunnell, CraigBihari (guitar); Timothy McFarland (piano); Sheila Pate (background vocals). Producers: Robbie Kilgore, Malcolm McClaren, Stephen Hague, Walter Turbitt. Recorded at Unique Recording, New York. Certainly one of the more bizarre major label releases of 1984, Malcolm McLaren's FANS has proven to be remarkably influential in ways that possibly not even its creator could have expected. On FANS, McLaren--who plays no instruments and sings even less than he did on his groundbreaking debut DUCK ROCK--combines opera, soul, and hip-hop in an entirely new (at the time) blend. Storylines and arias from CARMEN, TURANDOT, and MADAME BUTTERFLY are melded to slinky electronics. Oddly enough, the combination works. The singers, some of whom are operatic, and some of whom sound more like divas of the Whitney Houston variety, put over the material completely straight. There's not a trace of camp here, and the music, with its slow beats, woozy string samples and oddball accents, prefigures the rise of trip-hop by close to a decade. Put FANS beside a Moby album and you might have trouble telling them apart. SKU: 1002041

Follow The Leader
Tracks 1 through 12 are silent and are each five-seconds long. The album's track listing begins with number 13, "It's On!" Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipes); Munky, Head (guitar); Fieldy (bass); David (drums). Additionalpersonnel: Ice Cube, Trevant Hardson (vocals); Justin Walden (drums, programming); Tommy D (programming). Producers: Steve Thompson, Toby Wright, Korn. Recorded at NRG Recording, North Hollywood, California. Like Fear Factory and a host of others, Korn combines streamlined metal with ominous industrial touches and an undercurrent of hip-hop rhythm. FOLLOW THE LEADER is an urban nightmare, as unrelentingly dark as Onyx, Tool or Nine Inch Nails, and stylistically indebted to all three. The twin guitars of Munky and Head provide the requisite rock quotient, but throughout the album the band ventures beyond heavy rock cliches. The churning, jackhammer rhythms are leavened by subtle synthesizer work and occasionally the band falls into a bracing hip-hop beat, allowing them to show off the hard-edged syncopation that's at the core of their very visceral sound. Fostering the rap influence, Ice Cube makes a guest appearance on "Children of the Korn," and his hellbound, apocalyptic worldview sounds perfectly at home on FOLLOW THE LEADER. SKU: 1002090
