Timeless
This is an uncut 2-CD version of Goldie's 1995 release TIMELESS. Personnel: Goldie (vocals, keyboards, various instruments); Justina Curtis (vocals, keyboards); Diane Charlemagne, Lorna Harris, Caroline Butler, Jamie Goldikus, Jr. (vocals); Adam Salkeld (guitar); Tim Philbert (bass); Mel Gaynor (drums). Producers include: Goldie, Rob Playford. Engineers include: Rob Playford, Dego, Mark Rutherford. To appreciate TIMELESS, one must imagine a time when the renegade snares of drum n' bass were alien to Madison Avenue. Hard as it might be to believe now, with the breakbeat science put to the service of peddling anything from automobiles to undergarments, Goldie and his Metalheadz posse blew minds with their 21-minute "Timeless." Diane Charlemagne's voice swoops through a world of synth sirens, bass girders, and riveting breakbeats. Other TIMELESS standouts, including the crushing "Saint Angel" and "Jah The Seventh Seal," are seemingly extracted and distilled from "Timeless." Even now, it's an impressive slab of future-pop. In 1994, Goldie's wasthe implacable voice of ragga-punk alienation--and it was the most exciting noise heard from the underground in a long while. In his wake DJs young and old initiated a game of rhythmic/psychedelic one-upmanship and time-stretching insouciance that turned music on its ear. Pirate radio thrived in the early days of jungle. With his sparkling pop sensibilities, Goldie quickly ascended to drum n' bass super-stardom. Tracks such as "This Is A Bad," "Kemistry," and "You & Me" harness jungle's technological flash to R&B's soul. TIMELESS is, at heart, a pop album. As such, it holds up exceptionally well. 18
Personnel includes: Moby (vocals, various instruments); Jennifer Price, Azure Ray, Dianne McCauley, Angie Stone, MC Lyte, Freedom Bremner, Sinead O'Connor, Shauna & Lorraine Phillips, The Shining Light Gospel Choir (vocals). Includes liner notes by Moby. "18" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Continuing to deliver the kind of soulful electronica with an ethereal sheen that made PLAY such a breakthrough album for him, Moby keeps the good vibrations going on the equally engaging follow-up 18. Having previously drawn from such disparate sources as subtle dance beats and samples of African-American spirituals, it's not surprising that this devout Christian once again looked to the church for recruits. This time around the talents of The Shining Light Gospel Choir (the revival-like "I'm Not Worried At All" and the sweeping "In My Heart") and the recently ordained Sinead O'Connor (the lush "Harbour") get tapped. Moby avoids making 18 a strictly austere affair by throwing some beats onto the barbie in the shape of the thumping Angie Stone/M.C. Lyte collaboration "Jam For The Ladies" and the subtle cut-and-paste funk of "Sunday (The Day Before My Birthday)." Moby does a fine job manning the mike himself for the striking '80s-styleelectro-pop meditation "We Are All Made Of Stars" and the equally gorgeous soundscape "Signs Of Love." Ever the sonic chef, Moby has once again succeeded in whipping together a collection of songs that are the musical equivalent of comfort food. SKU: 1071858

Dynasty Roc La Familia (2000- ), The
Personnel: Jay-Z, Scarface, Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Snoop Dogg (rap vocals); R. Kelly, Freeway (vocals); Just Blaze (vinyl scratches); Lil Mo, DJ Clue, L. Dionne, Rell, Pharrell Williams, Static (background vocals). Producers: Just Blaze, Rick Rock, Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, Kanye West. Engineers: Chauncey Mahan, Duro, Shane "Bermy" Woodley. Recorded at Baseline, New York, New York and Enterprise Studios, Los Angeles, California. "Change The Game" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. Jay-Z released REASONABLE DOUBT, his solo debut, in 1996. Only four years later, he dropped his fifth album, THE DYNASTY. Matching his uniqueoff-beat delivery with hip-hop's most impressive lyrics, the Brooklyn-native reinforces the idea that he is one of rap's most profound MCs. Once again, Jay-Z shows us he knows about "big pimpin'" with tracks like "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)" and "Parking Lot Pimpin'," tales about the fast life, women, and money. Still, the rapper doesn't abandon the street ethics that have made him famous, as evident on the hustler's anthem "Streets Is Talking." Limiting the guest appearances to a minimum, besides his Roc-a-fella camp, he is joined by heavy hitters such as Snoop Dogg on "Get Your Mind Right Mami" and R. Kelly on "Guilty Until Proven Innocent." Inspiring other rappers to think deeply before they put their pen to the pad, Jay-Z keeps getting better, and despite multi-platinum status, he hasn't lost his street credibility. SKU: 1049446

Danzig Vol.3 (How The Gods Kill)
Danzig: Glenn Danzig (vocals, keyboards); John Christ (guitar); Eerie Von (bass); Chuck Biscuits (drums). Recorded at Record Plant and Hollywood Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California. Danzig's 1992 release, DANZIG III: HOW THE GODS KILL, turned out to be the group's highest-charting studio album. It was also the first Danzig album to be produced entirely by the group's singer/songwriter/leader Glenn Danzig, andwould prove to be the last album to include original drummer Chuck Biscuits. Like its two predecessors, DANZIG III (which featured horrific cover art by H.R. Geiger), continued to broaden the quartet's fanbase, while maintaining the band's unmistakable stamp (slow and crunchy riffs, tales of sex and the devil, Danzig's Jim Morrison-like vocal delivery, etc.). "Dirty Black Summer" is the album's standout track, as it deals with memories of Glenn Danzig's childhood, while other highlights include the eerie ballad "Sistinas," the buoyant title track, and the album-opening epic, "Godless," which is nearly seven minutes long. DANZIG III also proved to be one of the band's last album to stick to the group's original musical direction. Future releases like 1994's DANZIG 4 and 1996's BLACKACIDEVIL (the latter featuring only Glenn Danzig from the original band) experimented rather unsuccessfully with electronically sounds, a move that alienated Danzig's heavy metal audience. Ring Dance
With wife Bina singing background vocals and two accompanists, RING DANCE has the feel of Robin Williamson's first ensemble, the Incredible String Band. Where that '60s outfit was co-lead by Williamson and Mike Heron, their songs and voices alternating, this album is the musical vision of Williamson alone. Williamson himself plays most of the instruments (guitar, harp, bass, dulcimer, keyboards, fiddle, whistles, mandolin, and percussion). Lawson Dando sits in on keyboards, and Peter Stacey plays saxophone. Williamson's writing incorporates and celebrates the Celtic traditions that have long fascinated him. RING DANCE's dozen songs are romantic, mystical, earthy, folky, wise, and sly-sometimes several of these things at once. Since the'80s, Williamson has also pursued his homeland's tradition of storytelling (he has devoted whole CDs to this, including the two-volume GEMS OF CELTIC STORY), and here he incorporates short, spoken passages into several numbers. Dance For Me (Remixes)
DANCE FOR ME features remixes of tunes from the previously released albums MARY, SHARE MY WORLD and NO MORE DRAMA. Producers include: JimmyJam, Terry Lewis, Dr. Dre, Irv Gotti, Gerald Isaac. The title of this disc is exceedingly appropriate. Not that Mary J. Blige's pervious output could ever be accused of lacking in groove factor, but this remix album's raison d'etre is getting feet moving out on the dance floor. That aim is fully achieved, with the help of some skilled remixers, such as the legendary Junior Vasquez, who adds some old-school house flavor to "Your Child," and Curtis Moore, who lends a '70s disco tinge to the sunny "Everything." And for those who can't get enough of the already oft-remixed smash "No More Drama" need look no further than DANCE FOR ME's opening cut, which offers a booming, atmospheric Thunderpuss remix. It's Time (Special Edition) [Digipak]
Personnel include: Michael Buble (vocals); Nelly Furtado (vocals); Dean Parks, Heitor Pereira, Brian Green (guitar); Dan Higgins (flute, saxophone); Randy Waldman (piano);Christian McBride, Robert Hurst, Brian Bromberg (bass instrument); Jeff Hamilton, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Tull (drums); Rafael Padilla (percussion). Producers: David Foster; Humberto Gatica; Tommy LiPuma. Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet. SKU: 6582827

Feeling Strangely Fine
Semisonic: Dan Wilson (vocals, guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Moog synthesizer, loops);John Munson (vocals, guitar, piano, Moog synthesizer, bass, loops); Jake Slichter (vocals, Fender Rhodes & Wurlitzer pianos, Mellotron, drums, loops). Additional personnel: Matt Wilson (guitar); Bruce Allard, Mary Bahr, Carolyn Bulay, Troy Gardner, Josh Koestenbaum. Recorded at Seedy Underbelly, Minneapolis, Minnesota. "Closing Time" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Semisonic likes to craft happy, mid-tempo distorto-pop songs. Fear not, however--homogeneity rears not its bland face. While acoustic guitar is present throughout, this power trio is adept at varying its textures; Moog, wah-wah guitar and a pretty string section make a happy marriage here. In his lower range, lead vocalist/guitarist Dan Wilson adds a Dave Matthews-esque flavor, while higher up one hears echoes of Bono and Elton John. His guitar lines are simple and evocative, yet reinforced with enough overdrive to feel naughty. "Never You Mind" opens with piano reminiscent of Beatles rompers like "Lady Madonna," generously lacquered with trippy synth whistles and bubbles. The infectious guitar riff on "California" (that's Ca-li-forn-Eye-ah) is a welcome companion to a song about home and volcanoes. Brimming with original popcraft, FEELING STRANGELY FINE is true to its title, rising above its plaintive undertone with a bittersweet sense of wonder. SKU: 1003905

R.E.M.: Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stripe. Additional personnel includes: Michael Healy,Pamela Forde, Sunniva Fitzpatrick, Eileen Murphy, Ruth Murphy, Sebastian Petiet, Elizabeth Leonard, Paul O'Hanion, Jennifer Cassidy, Carol Quigley, Debbie Ellis, Nicola Cleary, Ruth Mann, Michelle Lalor, Elizabeth Dean, Cliona O'Driscoll, Marcus Miller, Peter Crooks, David James, Hillary O'Donovan, Annette Cleary (strings); David Agnew (winds); David Martin, Shaun Hooke, Eoin Daly, Fergal O'Ceallachain, David Carmody (horns); Scott McCaughley, Ken Stringfellow, Joey Waronker, Jamie Candiloro. Engineers include: Pat McCarthy, Jamie Candiloro, Dean Maher. REVEAL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Imitation Of Life" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. While the preceding UP equaled Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, and Peter Buck spending their studio time painstakingly stitching songs together via multiple overdubs, REVEAL finds the Athens trio playing together in the studio along with hired guns Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies), and drummer Joey Waronker (Beck). In bouncing back from drummer Bill Berry's departure, the group has emerged with a warm-sounding record bubbling over with dreamy pop songs. From the opening number "The Lifting," with its swirling textures, sparse piano, and Stipe's plainspoken enunciation, R.E.M. serve up heaping dollops of aural manna. Among the many highlights are the throbbing twang-and-strum of "All The Way To Reno (You're Gonna Be A Star)," which sounds like Mark Knopfler fronting The Flaming Lips, and the faux PET SOUNDS-outtake "Summer Turns To High" with its shimmering keyboards and Stipe's casual falsetto. Elsewhere, R.E.M. fuse Stax-flavored horns, swooping strings, and a cheap-sounding drum machine for the lighter-than-air "Beachball," and set off on a soaring flight of Rickenbacker guitar jangle soaked in strings and synths on "Imitation Of Life." REVEAL represents R.E.M's rebirth as a mellifluous pop engine. SKU: 1059051

Underground [Remastered]
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Jon Hendricks (vocals); Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone); Larry Gales (bass); Ben Riley (drums). Recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, New York on December 14 & 21, 1967 and February 14 & December 14, 1968. Includes liner notes by Peter Keepnews. This is part of the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces series. UNDERGROUND was the first Monk album in a decade to present new compositions by the artist. It is also the last album recorded with his classic quartet, featuring tenorist Charlie Rouse and the Ben Riley/Larry Gales rhythm section. Famous for its fun cover art (Monk is depicted in a French Resistance hideout at the piano with a machine gun slung over his shoulder, as a grumpy Nazi general looks on from the background), UNDERGROUND is truly one of Monk's finest offerings. His singular weave of angularity, swing, sweetness and simplicity appears everywhere. "Ugly Beauty," one of the new tunes, is a waltzing ballad. From the soft, lilting head to Rouse's blowing, there's as much lemon in the honey as the title suggests. "Raise Four" is a spacious blues, with Monk forminglean, expressive lines from its already-spare melody. This and "In Walked Bud" are prime examples of Monk's repetition of a line through the chord changes as a way of parading its various harmonic faces. The latter track is made quite evocative with the impromptu addition of singer Jon Hendricks' lyrics. SKU: 1086174

Dr. Byrds And Mr. Hyde [Remastered]
This is a remastered version of DR. BYRDS & MR. HYDE featuring five extra tracks. The additional tracks include "Stanley's Song," "Lay Lady Lay" and alternate versions of "This Wheel's On Fire," "Nashville West" and "My Back Pages/B.J. Blues/Baby What You Want Me To Do." The Byrds: Roger McGuinn, Gene Parsons, Clarence White, John York. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Engineers: David Diller, Tom May, Neil Wilburn. Includes liner notes by David Fricke and Johnny Rogan. Possibly the most downcast of the Byrds' albums, DR. BYRDS reflects the mutation of the hippie dream that was taking place in 1968. The brutal slab of electric folk-rock that is Dylan/Rick Danko's "This Wheel's on Fire" opens things up, mirroring the sociopolitical upheavals of the time. On this and other tunes, guitarist Clarence White trades his sweet country licks in for some burning, semi-psychedelic licks. Though the pastoral side of the band is represented by gently jangling versions of "Old Blue" and "Your Gentle Way of Loving Me," the setting soon returns to disillusion and unrest. "King Apathy III," (which, along with "Candy," boasts some progressive time changes) is full of contempt and sadness for those deluded by the Age of Aquarius. The countrified "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man" pounds a nail into the coffin of right wing hypocrisy. After all is said and done, the Byrds get back to the business of being a great bunch of musicians, amiablyrocking their way through a medley that pairs a revamped "My Back Pages" with Jimmy Reed's blues classic "Baby What You Want Me to Do." La Toussaint
Full performer name: Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys. Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys: Steve Riley (vocals, acoustic guitar, guitar, fiddle, Cajun & triple row accordions, snare drum); Peter Schwarz (vocals, fiddle, acoustic & electric basses, fiddle sticks); David Greely(vocals, fiddle); Jimmy Domengeaux (acoustic & electric guitars); Kevin Dugas (drums). Additional personnel: C.C. Adcock (guitar); Isaac Miller (pedal steel guitar); C.J. Chenier (alto saxophone); Clifford Alexander (rubboard); Kelli Roberts (triangle); Mbuku (tambourine). Recorded at Dockside Studio, Maurice, Louisiana and La Lou Recording Studio, Lafayette, Louisiana between January 4 and 10, 1995. A thoroughly exhilarating set of contemporary zydeco music, not as rocked out as (former Riley producer) Zachary Richard, but close. Riley and company, who perform everything in French, run through a set of obscure covers and group originals with drive and stylistic variety. There are two-steps and waltzes galore, the occasional all acoustic number ("Deux Valses a Wayne Perry"), plus up-tempo stompers with inventive guitar work that verge on rockabilly ("New Orleans Beat," "J'ai Reveille a Ce Matin"). Frontman Riley holds it all together with his appealingly ragged but right singing style; on the country-ish "La Valse D'Amitie," he actually sounds for all the world like a zydeco Gram Parsons. Angel In The Dark
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. ANGEL IN THE DARK features Laura Nyro's previously unreleased final recordings. Personnel includes: Laura Nyro (vocals, piano, electric piano); John Tropea, Jeff Pevar (guitar); Michael Brecker (saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet); Will Lee, Freddie Washington (bass); Chris Parker, Bernard Purdie (drums); Carole Steele, Bashiri Johnson (percussion). Producer: Laura Nyro. Reissue producer: Scott Billington, Eileen Silver-Lilywhite. Includes liner notes by Eileen Silver-Lillywhite. With Laura Nyro's untimely death the world lost one of its most original singer-songwriters, a woman capable of synthesizing jazz, R&B, gospel, and girl-group pop from an artful song poet's perspective. ANGEL IN THE DARK, a posthumous collection of Nyro's final recordings, is a godsend to Nyro fans. The album is divided between original compositions and Nyro's take on the mid-'60s pop that was one of her primary influences. Appropriately, the arrangements are based around her gospelly piano and supple voice. Guitars, horns, and backing vocals provide coloration, but for the most part the production is satisfyingly spare. Nyro's own songs here hark back to the classic approach of such albums as NEW YORK TENDABERRY, simultaneously bluesy and elegant. The cover tunes, which include R&B classics "La La Means I Love You," "Ooh Baby Baby," and the Spector-era pop gem "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," are given such a winningly idiosyncratic treatment that it's easyto confuse them with Nyro's tunes.
