Run DMC [Remastered]
Run-DMC: Joseph "Run" Simmons, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels (rap vocals); Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell (scratches). Additional personnel: Eddie Martinez (guitar). Recorded at Greene Street Recording, Inc, New York, New York. By marrying the emerging rap sound to a distorted electric guitar, "Rock Box" made the connection between rap and rock, and launched Run-DMC on the road to stardom. Their middle class backgrounds differed from the ghetto roots of rap, yet they took rap to the top of the charts within a few years. The sparse backing tracks made the declamatory vocal style of Run and DMC jump off the album, and their love of rock sounds gave them hooks that made the white audiencenotice. Joseph "Run" Simmons' effortless style brought much respect in the rap community, and the groups' "look" (matching Adidas sweatsuits and footwear) added to the impact of their arrival. RUN-DMC is a collection of the group's early singles, some of which were hits on the R&B charts ("It's Like That," "Hard Times" and "Rock Box"). SKU: 1087164

Stolen Moments - The Lady Sings Jazz & Blues Live
Full title: The Lady Sings... Jazz And Blues: Stolen Moments. Personnel includes: Diana Ross (vocals); Gil Asky (arranger, trumpet); Ted Dunbar (guitar); Justin Robinson, Frank Wess (alto saxophone); Ralph Moore, Jerome Richardson (tenor saxophone); Gary Smulyan (baritone saxophone); Jon Faddis, Stanton Davis, John Longo, Roy Hargrove (trumpet); Urbie Greene, Garnett Brown, Slide Hampton (trombone); Barry Harris, Bobby Tucker (piano); Ron Carter (bass); Grady Tate (drums). Recorded live at the Ritz Theatre, New York, New York on December 4, 1992. All tracks have beendigitally remastered. When Diana Ross portrayed Billie Holliday in the 1971 bio-pic LADY SINGS THE BLUES, she took a lot of heat from jazz purists who felt that her vocals lacked the essential Holliday spirit. Twenty-one years later, she turned the tables on them with a triumphant one night only concert of Holliday songs and standards, recorded for both CD and video. Here Ross is backed, variously, by a small combo and a big band, both featuring a veritable Who's Who of jazz musicians. Her singing is perfection; you could be excused for thinking she was actually channeling Lady Day. SKU: 1085260

Your Favorite Music
Clem Snide includes: Eef Barzelay (vocals, guitar); Jason Glasser (violin, cello, keyboards, electric bass, samples, background vocals); Jeff Marshall (upright & electric bass); Brad Reitz (drums). Additional personnel includes: Mary Rowell (violin); Irene Glasser (bassoon); Andy Hollander (keyboards); Phil Hernandes (percussion); Mary Olive Smith,Ambrosia Parsley (background vocals). Named after the predatory hallucination of a private eye that pops up throughout William Burroughs' writing, Clem Snide are literate shoegazers with an uncanny ability to turn pedestrian chords and imagery into sublime urban insight. Singer/guitarist/lyricist Eef Barzelay's songs continually gather off-kilter insights through small details. Tracks about a white woman's black boyfriend ("African Friend"), an unhealthy Christ fixation ("Messiah Complex Blues"), and the need to jump into the void ("I Love the Unknown") are fired off with imagery and vigor. Jeff Marshall's double bass and Jason Glosser's cello frame these ruminations with eerie Gothic touches. When this creepy playing hits its mournful stride and coalesces with one of Barzalay's more vague and poetic lyrics, as on the excellent "Loneliness Finds Her Own Way," Snide resemble both modern Lower East Side midnight cowboy psychologists and the latest in the line of New York's high-IQ six-string prophets. Cold Hard Facts, The
The Del McCoury Band: Del McCoury (vocals, guitar); Ronnie McCoury (vocals, mandolin); Rob McCoury (banjo); Jason Carter (vocals, fiddle); Mike Bub (vocals, bass). Additional personnel: Jerry Douglas (dobro). Recorded at Music Row Audio and Cowboy Arms Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Dana Andrew Jennings, Junior Brown, Steve Earle, Uncle "Dawg" Grisman, Eddie Stubbs and Robert K. Oermann. THE COLD HARD FACTS was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. Del McCoury's pure, cutting tenor demands attention and marks him as a first-class practitioner of authentic bluegrass, a rare commodity these days. While McCoury and his band remain true to the spirit of the music (look ma, no drums), he's not afraidto take songs from other genres and adapt them to fit his style. He transforms Robert Cray's "Smoking Gun" (with some furious mandolin work by brother Ronnie McCoury) and Tom Petty's "Love Is A Long Road" so completely that you'd swear they were written by Bill Monroe himself. With brothers Rob on banjo and Ronnie on mandolin (both sing, too), and the support of Dobro king Jerry Douglas, the Del McCoury Band creates a sharp, direct sound as timeless and vital as it is historically accurate. Not content to settle into a comfort zone, McCoury, a onetime lead singer of Monroe's Bluegrass Boys, keeps things moving with small surprises like the unexpected modulation in "Snake In The House" and the ominous minor-key mood of "Blackjack County Chains," a grim murder tale. Heroes
Personnel: Tom Paxton (vocals, guitar); Eric Weissberg (guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin), Kenneth Kosek (violin); Herb Bushler (bass); Gary Mure, Gary Chester (drums); Raymond Mantilla (percussion); Nancy Lee Baxter (background vocals). Producers: Jeff Zaraya, Maynard Solomon. Recorded at Vanguard's 23rd St. Studio, New York from March to April 1978. Tom Paxton's third and final album for the venerable folk label Vanguard Records is a '70s neo-folk gem. Not quite aggressive enough to be folk-rock nor orchestrated enough to compare to the chamber-folk efforts of Judy Collins or Nick Drake, HEROES is more akin to the subtly adventurous arrangements of mid-period JoniMitchell or early Carly Simon. Lyrically, however, it's pure Paxton all the way. Evenly split between serious songs and satirical broadsides, the concerns addressed in HEROES are like a yearbook of 1978: the calypso-flavored "Anita O.J." slams then-famous homophobe and orange juice spokeswoman Anita Bryant in no uncertain terms, while the more lighthearted "Hand Me Down My Jogging Shoes" pokes gentler fun at the running craze. In sharp contrast are deadly serious songs like "The Death of Stephen Biko," which is more literal than Peter Gabriel's later song about the South African martyr, but has just as stunning an emotional impact. Jagged Little Pill
Personnel: Alanis Morissette (vocals, harmonica); Glen Ballard (guitar, keyboards, programming); Basil Fung, Joel Shearer, Michael Landau, Dave Navarro (guitar); Benmont Tench, Michael Thompson (organ); Lance Morrison, Flea (bass); Rob Ladd (drums, percussion); Matt Laug (drums); Gota Yashiki. Engineers include: Christopher Fogel, Glen Ballard. Recorded at Westlake Studios and Signet Sound, Hollywood, California. JAGGED LITTLE PILL won the 1996 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Rock Album. "You Oughta Know" won the Grammys for Best Rock Song and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. "You Oughta Know" was also nominated for Song Of The Year, and Alanis Morissette was nominated for Best New Artist. "Ironic" was nominated for the 1997 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. With exuberant vocal gymnastics, Alanis Morissette offers chilling monologues from an outspoken and aggressive young performer. Her straight-for-the-jugular lyrical stance is given ample room to flex its muscles, and because of that very fact, JAGGED LITTLE PILL is indeed a tricky swallow. Pushed into the public eye by the scathing single "You Oughta Know," Morissette's American debut (she had two Canadian releases as a teen popster) lives up to its title. Recalling Siouxsie Sioux and Sinead O'Connor, Morissette's vocals coo and writhe, exuding a spectacular confidence of self, and letting her get away with lines like "I recommend biting off more than you can chew." The audio palette of flamenco guitar fills, distortion-drenchedpower chords and house-ready drum beats allow for Morissette to weave her songs in and out of genres, as easily as she goes through moods. Seemingly contradictory emotions come through in her feelings on falling in love on "Head Over Feet" ("You've already won me over in spite of me.../I couldn't help it/It's all your fault"). JAGGED LITTLE PILL is modern and aware music from a daring young songwriter. SKU: 3100733

Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
The Pharcyde: Slim Kid 3, Imani Wilcox, Booty Brown, Fat Lip. Additional personnel: Cedra Walton, Leslie Cooney (vocals); Buckwheat (rap vocals); J-Swift (piano, bass, Fender Rhodes electric piano, scratches, background vocals); JMD (drums); Rahsaan, Greg Padilla, Brandon Padilla (background vocals). Producers include: L.A. Jay, Slim Kid 3. When the Pharcyde burst onto the scene in the summer of '92 with its brilliantly disconnected grab bag BIZARRE RIDE II THE PHARCYDE, it seemed at first an innocuously enjoyable, goofy if somewhat lightweight disc. However, it would swiftly become clear that there were deeper waters stirring within the Pharcyde's rhymes andrhythms, and that the group's style was unlike that of those who came before. The main distinction came in the Pharcyde's subject matters, which run the gamut from the usual sexual conquests all the way to rejection and masturbation. The group's lyrics are often reflective and vulnerable, bordering on self-deprecating at times. While many rappers who came before poked fun at themselves as a gimmick, the Pharcyde relates its rebuffs with confident candor as on its hit single "Passin' Me By," where one by one each member of the foursome recounts a story of a woman he didn't get. Furthermore, though the samples used on the album are pretty much from the usual well (jazz and James Brown), there's something skewed about their interpretations. One particularly revealing track is a throwaway half-skit/half-song "Quinton's on His Way," a juke-joint improv that's sincere and straight out of a Roaring '20s backroom. SKU: 1001308

Long Live Rock 'n' Roll [Remastered]
Rainbow includes: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Cozy Powell (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Released in 1978, LONG LIVE was the final Ronnie James Dio-fronted release by Rainbow. Dio would go on to front Black Sabbath, while guitarist Richie Blackmore would reunite with Deep Purple. The album caps off a string of tremendous releases from one of the strongest branches on the heavy-metal family tree. The title track is a fan favorite and one of the strongest tunes from this era--a heavy rock tune written for arenas. "Lady of the Lake" is a solid number featuring haunting background vocals. "L.A. Connection" features the piano tinglings of keyboardist David Stone. "Gates of Babylon" is a mammoth track featuring the Bavarian String Ensemble, as synthesizer and strings combine for a symphonic big-rock sound. Another standout is "Kill the King," a speedy, full force tune with Mr. Blackmore doing what he does best. Blackmore opens the thunderous "The Shed (Subtle)" with a fluid, effects-laden bluesy solo. "Rainbow Eyes" is a seven-minute epic that features a string quartet, flute, and Dio's euphonic balladry. LONG LIVE, while not the masterwork that is RAINBOW RISING, is a strong album that ends the Dioera on a high note. SKU: 1017862

If I Could Only Remember My Name
Although this was a highly successful album, Crosby was later accused of being self-indulgent by some critics. In recent years that opinionhas reversed, acknowledging that the amount of space he allowed to fellow musicians, makes this a wholly unselfish record. The cream of San Francisco assembled, and in no particular order, there are Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Jack Casady, Paul Kantner, Joni Mitchell and Grace Slick. Crosby moves from the humour in his modern-day Jesse James story, 'Cowboy Movie', to wondrous spiritual voice excursions in 'I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here' and 'Tamalpais High'. The playing is faultless throughout and if you are not familiar with this wondrous record, please take the risk. SKU: 1005162

Back At The Chicken Shack
Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Donald Bailey (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 25, 1960. Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. This disc, along with MIDNIGHT SPECIAL and HOME COOKIN', is one of the truly classic albums Smith recorded for Blue Note. Introducing Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, whose warm, old-school playing blends perfectly with the oozing grooves of Smith's Hammond, BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK also features regular sidemen Kenny Burrell on guitar and beatkeeper Donald Bailey. Smith's innovative concoction of soul, jazz and blues does not disappoint: from the down- home vibe of the title track, through the infectious, loping theme of Turrentine's composition "Minor Chant, to the 32-bar blues that frames spectacular solos in "Messie Bessie." Smith's ambidextrous magic dazzles as always, and the spotlight shines with particular brightness on Turrentine, who establishes himself as a serious talent on this session. There's also a version of "Sunny Side Of The Street,"not included on the original LP. This is classic Smith with all the requisite flair and cool. It's a keeper. SKU: 5047153

Best Of Wes Montgomery, The
Personnel include: Wes Montgomery (guitar); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); George Shearing, Tommy Flanagan, Victor Feldman, Wynton Kelly (piano); Milt Jackson, Buddy Montgomery (vibraphone); Milt Hinton, Monk Montgomery,Percy Heath, Ron Carter (bass instrument); Albert "Tootie" Heath, Philly Joe Jones (drums); Louis Hayes (bass drum). Additional guest personnel: Johnny Griffin. Engineers: Ray Fowler; Jack Higgins; Wally Heider. Recording information: 1959 - 1963. Though guitarist Wes Montgomery achieved commercial success with a light, crossover sound on his records in the late 1960s, his reputation as a master of blues-inflected jazz playing was confirmed by his output on Riverside (1959 to 1963). This very fine 14-song sampler provides an overview of that period. Beginning with his early trio dates ("Yesterdays," from '59, features Montgomery with an organist and drummer) and going straight through to his appearance with a large string ensemble (1963's "Tune Up"), THE BEST OF does not disappoint in its variety and consistently high quality. Post-bop with a refined, deeply soulful edge is on order here, and Montgomery manages to be funky and subtle at once. The appearance of stellar personnel doesn't hurt matters, either--tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianists Wynton Kelly and George Shearing, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Jimmy Cobb all make cameos. In addition to intensely lyrical ballads ("Polka Dots and Moonbeans"), the Riverside material is notable for its high groove quotient, melding laid-back beats and shuffling rhythms to bop pyrotechnics, casting the whole in a soul-jazz vibe. This is a strong, compact introduction to some of the best guitar-based jazz of the era. SKU: 6582613

Truths And Rights
Recorded at Jamaica Recording Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. Though his voice isn't quite as memorable or readily identifiable as that of such peers as Gregory Isaacs and Sugar Minott, Johnny Osbourne is one of reggae's most durable singers. Like Minott, Osbourne personifies dancehall music. Infact, he is often called the greatest singer of vintage dancehall, since he has been a hitmaker for most of Jamaica's elite producers: Henry "Junjo" Lawes ("Ice Cream Love"), King Jammy ("Water Pumping"), and Linval Thompson ("Nightfall"), among others. Talk about reggae riddims and you begin at Studio One, where so many of the most "versioned" (copied) rhythms were born. On his return to Jamaica from Canada, Osbourne revisited the celebrated Studio One and recorded his classic TRUTH AND RIGHTS. The original rhythms over which Osbourne offers his heartfelt, R&B-flavored vocals and taut, tough, and true lyrics are a delight. Some, like the Soul Vendor's sassy "Swing Easy" (on "Can't Buy Love"), are well known. Others, including the title track (from Al Campbell's "Take a Ride") and the wonderful "Sing Jay Stylee" (from Alexander Henry's "Please Be True"), are less familiar, but equally irresistible. Halcyon Days
Personnel include: Bruce Hornsby (vocals, keyboards); Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Elton John, Lloyd Jones, Sting (vocals); Doug Derryberry, R.S. Hornsby, Wayne Pooley (guitar); Bobby Read (clarinet); J.V. Collier (bass guitar); Sonny Emory (drums); Bonnie Bonaparte (percussion); Woody Green, Ralph Payne, Donnie Struckey (background vocals); John "J.T." Thomas, Peter Harris. For his Columbia Records debut, HALCYON DAYS, Bruce Hornsby turned to his role as family man for inspiration. Written for one of Hornsby's sons struggling with self-esteem issues, "Dreamland" features the composer alternating solo verses with Elton John before the duo joins with gospel singer Lloyd Jones on this soothing lullaby. The gently pulsing, BonnieRaitt-like title cut features Eric Clapton's warm guitar phrasing and Sting's burnished harmony vocals. Hornsby's spry skill on the keys continues to delight, as he struts his range on notable numbers, from the stride-piano nuances sprinkled throughout "What the Hell Happened" and the New Orleans-flavored "Heir Gordon" to the sparse yet string-laden solo instrumental "Song F." Best of all is the opening cut, "Gonna Be Some Changes Made," a snappy number bubbling over with chugging rhythms, drizzled piano notes, and crisp Clapton riffs. Almost two decades into his recording career, Bruce Hornsby here solidifies his status as one of pop's premier piano-playing singer/songwriters. SKU: 6560880

Timeless
This is an uncut 2-CD version of Goldie's 1995 release TIMELESS. Personnel: Goldie (vocals, keyboards, various instruments); Justina Curtis (vocals, keyboards); Diane Charlemagne, Lorna Harris, Caroline Butler, Jamie Goldikus, Jr. (vocals); Adam Salkeld (guitar); Tim Philbert (bass); Mel Gaynor (drums). Producers include: Goldie, Rob Playford. Engineers include: Rob Playford, Dego, Mark Rutherford. To appreciate TIMELESS, one must imagine a time when the renegade snares of drum n' bass were alien to Madison Avenue. Hard as it might be to believe now, with the breakbeat science put to the service of peddling anything from automobiles to undergarments, Goldie and his Metalheadz posse blew minds with their 21-minute "Timeless." Diane Charlemagne's voice swoops through a world of synth sirens, bass girders, and riveting breakbeats. Other TIMELESS standouts, including the crushing "Saint Angel" and "Jah The Seventh Seal," are seemingly extracted and distilled from "Timeless." Even now, it'san impressive slab of future-pop. In 1994, Goldie's was the implacable voice of ragga-punk alienation--and it was the most exciting noise heard from the underground in a long while. In his wake DJs young and old initiated a game of rhythmic/psychedelic one-upmanship and time-stretching insouciance that turned music on its ear. Pirate radio thrived in the early days of jungle. With his sparkling pop sensibilities, Goldie quickly ascended to drum n' bass super-stardom. Tracks such as "This Is A Bad," "Kemistry," and "You & Me" harness jungle's technological flash to R&B's soul. TIMELESS is, at heart, a pop album. As such, it holds up exceptionally well. Elvis In Person
Cassette available on RCA (3892). NOTES: Full title: Elvis In Person At The International Hotel, Las Vegas, Neveda. Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals); James Burton, John Wilkinson (guitar); Charlie Hodge (guitar, vocals); Larry Muhoberac (piano, organ); Jerry Scheff (bass); Ronnie Tutt (drums); Millie Kirkham (background vocals). Recorded live at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, Neveda from August 22 to 26, 1969. Digitally remastered by Dick Baxter (September 1991, BMG Recording Studios, New York). By 1969, Presley was no longer an unwelcome upstart to conservative Vegas audiences. Rather, he was exactly what Vegas loves best: a long-established star who put on a very big show. ELVIS IN PERSON contains highlights of the last five nights of Presley's month-long stint at the International Hotel, and it documents his Vegas show in its nascent stages. For this engagement, Presley featured more of his own hits than he would in the future. Presley was also more enthusiastic about performing that he would later be, as the thrill of conquering audiences had not yet given way to the tedium of constant touring. For all these reasons, ELVIS IN PERSON is many fans' favorite Presley live recording. There are occasional odd moments--an operatic soprano caterwauling behind "Are You Lonesome Tonight?," unnecessary horn flourishes at the end of nearly every song--but they are easily overshadowed by the strengths of Presley and his rocking core band, ledby guitarist James Burton. All the tracks on this album originally appeared on the two-record set FROM MEMPHIS TO VEGAS/FROM VEGAS TO MEMPHIS in 1969. SKU: 5046639

Facing You
The stunning ECM debut that unleashed one of the greatest piano players of our time. Using jazz as an excuse, Jarrett initiated and indoctrinated us with improvised solo piano, something to which listeners would become used over the next three decades. Facing You is boogie-woogie, country hoedown, blues, folk, rock 'n' roll-flavoured jazz, and is still an astonishing album. The music press at the time of issue were bereft of ideas about how to categorize him; it would have been much simpler just to wallow in the music. Much of Jarrett's and Manfred Eicher's futuremusical philosophy started out with this important record. SKU: 5047311
