Strawberries (Deluxe)
The Damned includes: Dave Vanian (vocals); Captain Sensible (guitar, bass); Rat Scabies (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Finding their feet again after yet another career misstep, the Damned emergedwith STRAWBERRIES, their fifth studio album in as many years. With their line-up more or less stable at this point, it features Dave Vanian's more assured vocals and the more-pop-by-the-minute keyboards and guitars of Captain Sensible. STRAWBERRIES evokes the best of the Stranglers with a touch of XTC thrown in. Well produced by the band themselves, aurally it's a great improvement over previous efforts, and even includes a lyric sheet. From the catch-a-fire punk of "Ignite," the album moves on to new-wave pop with "Generals" and "Stranger on the Town." "Dozen Girls" foreshadows the gothic Damned of the near future, while "The Dog," STRAWBERRIES' most interesting track, fortifies their creepy vampiric image. For un-cynical punks in love, there's also the surprisingly bouncy un-cynical love song "The Pleasure and the Pain," and its companion "Life Goes On." An enjoyable album and highly recommended. Boston
Boston: Brad Delp (vocals); Tom Scholz (guitar, organ); Barry Goudreau (guitar); Fran Sheenan (bass); Sib Hassian (drums). Recorded at Foxglove Studios, Watertown, Massachusetts; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California between 1975 and 1976. Recorded on a simple 12-track recorder as a demo, it was so good that the record company released it. Tom Scholz mastermindedthe project in his spare time; little did he know that this record came to define AOR, and would become a hi-fi store standard demo disc. Since that time, this record-breaking debut has sold 15 million copies in its homeland. Sholtz put so much effort into making it, he has managed only three further records in 22 years. "More Than A Feeling" still chills in a corny sort of way and the harmonies are pretty impressive. SKU: 1001284

Heartbreaker [Remastered]
Free: Paul Rodgers (vocals, guitar, piano); Paul Kossoff (guitar); Simon Kirke (guitar, drums, percussion, background vocals); Rabbit (piano, organ, glockenspiel, background vocals); Tetsu Yamauchi (bass, percussion). Additional personnel: Snuffy (guitar); Rebop Kwaku Baah (congas). Recorded in October and November 1972. The last Free album, 1973's HEARTBREAKER, is essentially a snapshot of a band in disarray. The group had already broken up once and decided to regroup one last time, but only singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke hada major say in the proceedings. Guitarist Paul Kossoff was beset by drug problems, but did manage to play on half of HEARTBREAKER, which, despite all the hardships surrounding the recording, stands as a classic Free album--including such gems as "Wishing Well," the title track, and "Muddy Water." After splitting up Free for good after HEARTBREAKER, Rodgers and Kirke would reappear shortly with the successful Bad Company, while Kossoff launched Back Street Crawler, before succumbing to a drug-induced heart attack in 1976. Sound Of Wind Driven Rain
Personnel: William Ackerman, Rob Eberhard Young, Marc Shulman (guitar); Samite (vocals); Charlie Bisharat (violin);Paul McCandless (English horn); Philip Aaberg (piano); Michael Manring (fretless & fretted basess); Jackline Rago (frame drum); Gerry James (rainstick). Engineers include: Corin Nelsen, Howard Johnston. Principally recorded at Imaginary Road Studios, Windham County, Vermont. Includes liner notes by Will Ackerman. SOUND OF WIND DRIVEN RAIN was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best New Age Album. As founder and creative force behind Vermont's Windham Hill Records, Will Ackerman almost single-handedly turned New Age music into a popular alternative to classical, light jazz and even the outer reaches of avant-garde rock. With SOUND OF WIND DRIVEN RAIN, Ackerman--a highly accomplished guitar player whose specialty is feeling out the spaces between notes--creates a universe of soft, flowing tones. If ever an album's title reflected what's to be heard inside, SOUND OF WIND DRIVEN RAIN stands as a glowing example of truth in advertising. It features a number of New Age-standard instruments, such as the rain stick, frame drum and fretless bass. SOUND OF WIND DRIVEN RAIN is hardly a departure from the genre, but rather a logical continuum of the ambient music Ackerman helped popularize. SKU: 4113310

Profile Vol.1 (The Best Of Emmylou Harris)
Personnel: Emmylou Harris (vocals, guitar); Nicolette Larson (vocals); Albert Lee, Rodney Crowell (guitar, background vocals); James Burton, Brian Ahern,Bernie Leadon, Mike Auldridge, Rick Cunha (guitar); Hank Devito, Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar); Byron Berline (mandolin); Herb Pedersen (banjo, guitar, background vocals); Ricky Skaggs (fiddle); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Emory Gordy (piano, bass); Glen D. Hardin, Bill Payne (piano); Ray Pohlman (bass); John Ware, Ron Tutt (drums); Fayssoux Starling, Dianne Brooks, Jonathan Edwards (background vocals). Engineers include: Brian Ahern, Bradley Hartman, Donivan Cowart. Recorded between 1974 & 1977. This best-of collection features some of Emmylou Harris's best-loved 1970s material. In addition to Harris' charming singing style, and her tight band, great songs by the likes of Delbert McClinton, Buck Owens, Charlie and Ira Louvin, Chuck Berry, Dolly Parton, and others make PROFILE a real gem. Harris' stunningly beautiful voice glides effortlessly over the many country ballads. Not surprisingly, most of these tunes are essentially laments; among them poignant renditions of "Sweet Dreams," "Making Believe," the exquisite "If I Could Only Win Your Love," "Too Far Gone," and others. For all those who want to do a little square dancing, Harris delivers a few uptempo country rockers including, "(You Never Can Tell) C'est La Vie" and "Two More Bottles of Wine." Produced by Harris's husband Paul Ahern, this is a superb compilation of the singer's early work, confirming her ability to bring insight and innovation to a genre often dominated by generic abilities. Hyperborea
Named after the Greek mythological paradise that lays beyond the cold North wind, the 1983 release HYPERBOREA showcases Tangerine Dream's continued interest in automation and sampled beats, largely the influence of band member Johannes Schmoelling, who joined the band in 1980. The album is just one of many the band put out during an extremely fertile decade, with their seminal studio albums buttressed by numerous soundtracks. Strongly influenced by the soundtrack to GANDHI, the first track, "No Man's Land," features stuttering, North Africanrhythms, looping vocals, and a synth drum phrase that recalls the opening of Yes's "Changes." Scorpion (Clean Version)
Personnel includes: Eve (rap vocals); Da Brat, Trina, Tina Marie, Gwen Stefani, DMX, The Lox, Yung Won. Producers include: Dr. Dre, The Neptunes, The Marleys, Stevie J., Swizz Beatz. "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Eve's 1999 debut album LET THERE BE EVE found this feisty female rapper emerging definitively from the shadow of the Ruff Ryders crew, establishing herself as a hip-hop artist to be reckoned with. Eve's up-front approach and image betray no weakness, but on SCORPION she's comfortable enough with her credibility to allow for melodic pop hookslike the tasty, Gwen Stefani-sung chorus of "Who's That Girl?" in the arrangements. "Swallow it up while I shove it down" is the imperative Eve directs to those who thought she'd be a one-hit wonder. If anything, SCORPION improves upon the first album, employing a wider range of styles that adds some funk and R&B to the mix, and utilizing a wider sonic palette. Of course, it's Eve's lyrical skills and forthright, confident approach that add the definitive signature to this impressive sophomore effort. SKU: 1056857

If such a genre exists, "progressive punk" would be the best way to describe the single, 18-plus-minute track that makes up this EP. There are drastic lyrical shifts in THE DECLINE. Cynical tongue-in-cheek prose gives way to warnings concerning the glorification of violence. What follows is a diatribe covering the hypocrisy of the judicial system, the mind-numbing effects of television, and theloss of integrity. The conceptual thread that seems to connect it all is a general apathy in the collective consciousness of America, as Fat Mike sings, "The going gets tough / the tough get debt / don't pay attention / pay the rent / our next of kins pays for your sins." NOFX has delivered its rallying cry for independent thought, and it is THE DECLINE. SKU: 1043732

Night Song
Full performer name: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan/Michael Brook. Personnel: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (vocals, harmonium, keyboards); Michael Brook (arranger, guitar, keyboards, bass, electronic percussion); Richard Evans (mandola); Caroline Dale (cello); Kauwding Cissokho (kora); Jo Bruce (woodwinds, Hammond B-3 organ, drums); Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan (harmonium); Mick Karn, Robert Ahwai (bass); James Pinker (drums, hi-hat, percussion); Dildar Hussain (tabla); Masamba Diop (talking drum). Engineers: Richard Evans, Ben Findlay, Michael Brook. NIGHT SONG was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan here teams up with Canadian composer/songwriter Michael Brook to create an interesting addition to the world music genre. Combining elements of pop with ambient sounds and traditional Islamic music, NIGHT SONG seeks to combineseemingly disparate musical cultures. Blending together Nusrat's qawwali melodies with a backbeat and lush swells from guitars, Brook creates a hypnotic groove that speaks both to the religious and secular minded listener. Interspersing elements of mainstream Western music with the ancient Sufi singing style of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is more than a novelty, however. This album urges one to reconsider the relationship between Western and Eastern musical traditions; both spheres contain a zest for expression and musical storytelling that lends itself well to such collaboration. Highlights include the brooding "Sweet Pain" and the digitally enhanced "My Comfort Remains." SKU: 5047895

Trouble In Paradise
Personnel includes: Randy Newman, Jennifer Warnes, Don Henley (vocals); Steve Lukather (guitar); Larry Williams, Steve Madaio, Ernie Watts, Jerry Hey, Jim Horn, Jon Smith (horns); Ralph Grierson, Niel Larson (piano); David Paich, Michael Boddicker (keyboards); Nathan East (bass); Jeff Porcaro (drums); Lenny Castro, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Christine McVie, Wendy Waldman, Lindsey Buckingham, Bob Seger, Linda Ronstadt, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Simon. Recorded at Warner Brothers Studios, North Hollywood, California. On his '80s recordings, Newman relied on a slick, poppy wall of sound provided by the L.A. session vetsthat were his longtime compatriots. It's hard to tell whether the smooth, L.A. sound that permeates records like TROUBLE IN PARADISE was an ironic tool to distance Newman from his lyrics, or whether he just dug that sound. Whatever the case, the listener is forced to focus more intently on the lyrics, and the dark sentiments often expressed attain that more of an effective ironic contrast. There's an ironic paean to Newman's home town ("I Love L.A."), a stab at racism ("Christmas in Capetown") and a stinging satire of California high rollers ("My Life is Good"). On "The Blues," where he's joined by Paul Simon, Newman deflates his own profession, making light of those who express personal pain through music. It's this kind of self-conscious humility that makes Newman's music interesting no matter what the sonic setting. SKU: 1028672

Wish
The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, 6-string bass, keyboards); Perry Bamonte (guitar, keyboards, 6-string bass); Porl Thompson (guitar); Simon Gallup (keyboards, bass); Boris Williams (drums, percussion). Recorded at The Manor, Oxfordshire, England. Undoubtedly morecommercial than previous albums, Wish nevertheless represented the Cure doing what they do best, oblivious to prevailing musical trends. Once again, Robert Smith tore out his innards and offered them to the listener (the wrenching and chilling 'Apart'), spitting bile in 'Cut' and effectively evoking the feeling of wretched, helpless drunkenness in 'Open'. Amid the darkness, there is still time for a couple of classic pop songs, particularly the catchy 'Friday I'm In Love', and the customary obsessive love odes. Although frequently dismissed by hardcore Cure fans as too pop-orientated, Wish managed to strike a balance between the extremes of utter despair and intoxicating joy. SKU: 1003444

Diplomatic Immunity (Cam'ron Presents...) [PA]
The Diplomats: Cam'ron, Jimmy Jones, Juelz Santana, Freekey Zekey (rap vocals). Additional personnel includes: Master P, DMX. Producers include: Kanye West, Heatmakerz, E-Bass, Charlemagne, Ralph Random. Principally recorded at Baseline, Quad, Sony Music, and Hit Factory Studios, New York, New York. For his fourth release Cam'ron enlists the talents of three up-and-comers (Juelz Santana, Freeky Zeekey, and Jimmy Jones) for a colorful and extended foray through New York mores in general and those of their respective 'hoods in Harlem in particular. A typical cut, "Ground Zero," is ostensibly 9/11-related, but closer listening will reveal that it's about that gangsta staple, drugs, the thugs that deal them, and the marks that take them. There are flashes of humor amid the gritty material; "Real Ni***s," with its accompanying skit, neatly skewers the "keeping it real" philosophy, and has a smooth Gamble & Huff sample to boot. The overall thug-life lyrical slant is leavened with other imaginative samples and arrangements of this ilk, and the double-CD format gives the posse the space to display its comedic skills over the courseof several skits. DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY could easily be accused of overkill, but on this showing it just means that there's more of the Diplomats to love. SKU: 1081980

Outlandos D'amour [Remastered] [ECD]
The Police: Andy Summers (vocals, guitar); Sting (vocals, bass); Stewart Copeland (drums). Recorded at Surrey Sound Studios, London, England. The Police brashly asserted themselves on the American pop scene with OUTLANDOS D'AMOUR, their first album. Their distinctive mix of rock and reggae with Sting's jazz-based vocals and slightly punk lyrics was unlike that of any other group. Before releasing any songs in America, manager Miles Copeland (Stewart's brother) arranged an American tour complete with rented van and borrowed equipment. With America thusprimed, The Police's first single "Roxanne" (already a British hit) went as far as #32 on the charts. SKU: 1085280

This Is The Moment
Personnel includes: Donny Osmond, Rosie O'Donnell, Vanessa Williams (vocals); Jeff Mironov (acoustic & electric guitars); Emily Mitchell (harp); Lawrence Feldman (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone); Charlie Pillow (flute, tenor saxophone); Shamus Egan (pennywhistle); Roger Rosenberg (baritone saxophone); Jim Hynes, Lew Soloff (trumpet); Bob Carlisle (French horn); Dave Taylor, Mike Davis (trombone); Marcus Rojas (tuba); Rob Mouncey (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Philippe Saisse (keyboards, programming); Robbie Kondor (keyboards); Neil Jason, Larry Glazner (bass); Shawn Pelton (drums); Vaneese Thomas, Rob Mathes, Jill Dell'Abate (background vocals). Recorded at Right Track Studio, New York, New York. For those who haven't been counting, THIS IS THE MOMENT represents approximately the fourth stage in Donny Osmond's musical life. The first was his work with the Osmond Brothers, the second his partnership with sister Marie, while his first "comeback" occurred with his pop-R&B solo smash "Soldier of Love." Over a decade later,he returned again, this time reincarnated as a hip interpreter of songs from contemporary, pop-oriented Broadway musicals. You won't hear any constipated crooning of songs from CATS here; instead, Osmond offers a funky version of "Seasons of Love" from RENT, a dance-pop take on "No Matter What" from WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND, and a good natured, synth-colored romp with Rosie O'Donnell through TOY STORY's "You've Got a Friend in Me." Osmond even reaches back to the classic musical GUYS & DOLLS for an angular, funky update of "Luck Be a Lady," aptly demonstrating both his originality and his sense of history. SKU: 1059084
