Post Global Music
Personnel includes: David Pajo, Bundy K. Brown, Tim Goldsworthy, Tied & Tickled Trio, DJ Your Food, Flacco. Some remix albums funkyou upside the head with sharp and slammin' beats. Others pummel you into submission with a dazzling phantasmagoria of sound. POST GLOBAL MUSIC instead lures you deep into the murky twilight regions that Aerial M calls home. Featuring remixes by four artists from four different parts of the world, this beautiful disc is made for listening rather than grooving. The music is certain to entice whether or not you're already familiar with the source material. While all of the tracks are worthy of your attention, Bundy K. Brown's treatment is a real standout. The Directions In Music leader's mix sprawls for nearly 20 minutes (with a title that takes almost as long to read), its undulating motifs visiting many wonderful and uncharted regions during the strange journey. Unknown Pleasures
Joy Division: Ian Curtis (vocals);Bernard Sumner (guitar, keyboards); Peter Hook (bass); Stephen Morris (drums). Recorded at Strawberry Studios, Stockport, England. Hailing from Manchester, England, Joy Division profoundly affected the alternative music scene. Arriving as punk music was waning, UNKNOWN Joy Division's music inhabits an eerie, twilight world. Decay and alienation envelop singer Ian Curtis, whose cavernous, but dispassionate, voice belied the intensity he brought to bear. Rolling drum patterns, thudding bass lines and uncluttered synthesizer combine to create a dank, brooding atmosphere, chillingly supporting the songs' bleak lyrics. Yet listening to Unknown Pleasures is not a depressing experience. The group generate a terse excitement, emphasizing individual strengths and avoiding unnecessary embellishment. Their sense of commitment is utterly convincing and few debut albums can boast such unremitting power. SKU: 1027589

Release
Pet Shop Boys: Neil Tennant (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Chris Lowe (keyboards, programming). Additional personnel includes: Johnny Marr (guitar); Chris Zippel (keyboards); Steve Walters (bass); Jodie Linscott (percussion). Recorded at Studio PSB and Sony Music Studios, London, England. RELEASE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards For Best Recording Package. Those whose minds are fixed on yesterday (read: the '80s) may forever associate the slyly intellectual pop duo Pet Shop Boys with now-cliche electronic dance flavors. Any expectation of nostalgia for such an approach on RELEASE is bound to be met with more than a little surprise. While there are sophisticated, percolating dance beats to be found in "The Samurai in Autumn" and some mildly danceable rhythm loops are heard elsewhere, this is an extremely organic album that occasionally verges on (dare it be said?) rock, orat least pop-rock. The cinematic, piano-driven torch song-in-denial "I Get Along" could have been penned by a more enlightened Elton John. The throaty vocals and lush, orchestral pop accompaniment of "Birthday Boy" bear echoes of Spiritualized's "pop" opus LET IT COME DOWN. Thus, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe manage to retain the tone of their initial vision without falling prey to the creeping morass of '80s retro fever, and good for them. SKU: 1070629

Suzanne Vega
Personnel: Suzanne Vega (vocals, acoustic guitar); Frank Christian (acoustic & electric slide guitars); Steve Addabbo (electric guitar, guitar synthesizer, background vocals); Jon Gordon (electric guitar); Shem Guibbory (violin); Darol Anger (electric violin); Maxine Neumann (cello); C.P. Roth (synthesizer); Paul Dugan, Frank Gravis (bass); Sue Evans (drums); John Mahoney (programming). Recorded at Celestial Sound Studios, New York, New York between January and March, 1985. Vega's debut album marked a turning point, both for singer-songwriters and for female artists. Inspired more by the dark, poetic visions of Leonard Cohen than the hippie goddessisms of Joni Mitchell, she brought to the public an awareness that acoustic guitar-based music could be arch, urbane and artful. She also proved that, in an exceptionally male-dominated era, women didn't have to be either wallflowers or sexpots to make their artistic statements. Though she receives sympathetic backing from Jon Gordon, Michael Visceglia and others, Vega's guitar and voice are at the heart of the arrangements. It's that focus on the song that allows the stark, angular lyrics of "Small Blue Thing," "Straight Lines" and "Undertow" to make their unpretentious poetry heard. And it's Vega's unique, vibrato-less delivery (a combo platter of Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson) that gives perfect voice to these songs of urban rootlessness and spiritual ambiguity. SKU: 1019754

Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus [Digipak]
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals, piano); Mick Harvey (guitar); Warren Ellis (bouzouki, mandolin, violin, flute); Conway Savage (piano); James Johnston (organ); Martyn P. Casey (bass instrument); Jim Sclavunos, Thomas Wydler (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: London Community Gospel Choir. Producers: Nick Launay; Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Recording information: Studios Ferber, Paris, France (04/2004). Two albums packaged together, the hard-hitting ABATTOIR BLUES and the quieter, more balladic THE LYRE OF ORPHEUS were recorded in a single burst of creativity in spring of the same year. Even though this release marks the first time in Nick Cave's solo career that he'd recorded withoutguitarist/partner-in-crime Blixa Bargeld, there is no diminution of raw energy. "Nature Boy" may boast a pop-friendly chorus, but ABATTOIR BLUES come charging out of the gate with the furious "Get Ready for Love," and "Fable of the Brown Ape" contains some extremely Blixa-like, discordant guitar squalls. Even the potentially risky gambit of adding a gospel choir for some tracks pays off, successfully upping the drama quotient. THE LYRE OF ORPHEUS is the more contemplative half of the set, but is no less intense for that. In fact, the title song--essentially a retelling of the Greek legend--bears as stunning an impact as anything on the disc's more raucous partner. Throughout both albums, Cave's lyricism is at a peak; from the violent-but-inspired imagery of the driving, bluesy "Hiding All Away" to the almost shockingly vivid nature symbolism employed on "Babe, You Turn Me On," Cave truly earns his stripes as one of the finest wordsmiths of his generation. Van Halen II [Remastered]
Van Halen: David Lee Roth (vocals); Eddie Van Halen (guitar); Michael Anthony (bass); Alex Van Halen (drums). Recorded at Sunset SoundRecorders, Hollywood, California in 1979. All tracks have been digitally remastered. While it's tough to follow up a classic, VAN HALEN II comes close to matching the brilliance of the band's debut. Once again, the record begins with a fat bass line from Michael Anthony, and his piercing background vocals are featured on "You're No Good," an explosive cover of the Linda Ronstadt tune. While the group's early material was slightly too heavy for Top 40 airplay, here they take a commercial stab with the brilliant "Dance the Night Away" and "Beautiful Girls." "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" features the trademark wails of David Lee Roth, and Eddie Van Halen's magical soloing. Alex Van Halen's playing takes a slightly complex turn on "Outta Love Again" with some funky drum fills. Eddie shows his versatility with the gorgeous, flamenco-styled solo "Spanish Fly." The band kicks it full throttle once again on "D.O.A.," which accelerates to a mighty finish. "Women in Love" features lessons from Mr. Roth on dealing with female fickleness. VAN HALEN II would go on to be a huge success, reaching the U.S. Top 10. This remastered album leaves the band sounding better than ever. SKU: 1053853

Burnt Weeny Sandwich
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. The Mothers Of Invention includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, organ); Sugar Cane Harris (violin); Ian Underwood, Don Preston (piano). BURNT WEENY SANDWICH would be Frank Zappa's last album released in the Sixties (December of 1969, to be exact). Having just split up the original Mothers of Invention line-up, Zappa decided to sift through tapes of unused tracks by the band, which ultimately comprised BURNT WEENY SANDWICH (another compilation ofouttakes, WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH, would be issued one year later). The majority of the album is instrumental, and contains both live and studio material. Although the songs didn't surface the first time around, these aren't throwaways--many worthwhile Zappa cuts reside here. The only compositions to contain vocals are the album's opener, "WPLJ," and closer, "Valarie." Both are essentially obscure doo-wop covers (Zappa covered doo-wop songs throughout his career), and are expertly performed. Symphonic music is touched upon with two brief tracks, "Igor's Boogie (Phase One)" and "Igor's Boogie (Phase Two)," as well as the lengthier "Holiday in Berlin, Full Blown." "Theme From Burnt Weeny Sandwich" is guitar-driven rock, "Aybe Sea" is beautiful chamber music, and "The Little House I Used To Live In" is a nearly twenty-minute track, beginning as a solo piano piece before turning into a typically twisted Zappa rocker. Revolver
The Beatles: George Harrison (vocals, guitar, sitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, bass); John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums). Additional personnel includes: Alan Civil (French horn); Anil Bhagwat (tabla); Brian Jones (background vocals). Arguably the first psychedelic rock album, REVOLVER was praised for its musical experimentation--the Indian sounds of "Love You To," the Motown-inspired "Got To Get You Into My Life," the backwards guitar in "I'm Only Sleeping." "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the most radical departure from previous Beatles' recordings for its skeletal bass/drums propulsion enhanced only with tape loops (contributed by all four Beatles and added in the mix-down process), more backwards guitar, and an eerie John Lennon vocal. Still, the Beatles' experimentation grew out of their songwriting, whichhad matured beyond formula pop. "Tomorrow Never Knows" was inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Harrison's "Taxman" was a bitter diatribe, and McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby" was a bleak portrait of loneliness. Balanced with upbeat songs like "Good Day Sunshine" and "Yellow Submarine," REVOLVER proved The Beatles were not mere pop stars, but musical artists in search of new sounds and ideas. SKU: 1004916

Fireproof
Pillar: Rob Beckley (vocals); NoahHenson (guitar); Kalel (bass); Lester Estelle (drums). Additional personnel: Brad Noone (drums); Scott Gilman (programming). Producers: Travis Wyrick, Pillar, Andrew "Mudrock" Murdock. Recorded at West Man, Nashville, Tennessee and Lake Side Studio, Knoxville, Tennessee. Taking the nod from heavy, spiritually minded bands such as P.O.D. and Creed, Pillar fuses crunchy guitars with sometimes-melodic, sometimes-rapping vocals. "Echelon," "Stay Up," and "Behind Closed Doors" all sound very closely modeled after the style forged by Rage Against The Machine and P.O.D., while "Fireproof, " "Individual," and "Hindsight" hint at a Limp Bizkit influence lurking in the band's collective psyche. FIREPROOF boasts a thick, meaty production, courtesy of Travis Wyrick (Place Of Skulls, Disciple). The tasty syncopation in "A Shame" shows off the rhythmic chops of bassist Kalel and drummer Brad Noone. From the chunky riffing in "Epidemic" to the chilly vocals in "Further," Pillar shows great promise with their positively charged music. SKU: 1084575

Kick
INXS: Michael Hutchence (vocals); Kirk Pengilly (guitar, saxophone, background vocals); Andrew Farris (guitar, keyboards); Tim Farriss (guitar); Garry Gary Beers (bass); Jon Farriss (drums, percussion). Recorded at Rhinoceros Studios, Sydney, Australia and Studio De La Grande Armee, Paris, France. Originally released on Atlantic (8179). Includes liner notes by Chris Thomas. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Okay, this album's omnipresence (it produced no less than five charting singles out of 12 songs) on radio and television for over a year and a half--alongside singer Michael Hutchence's mass media anointment as THE premier rock and roll sex symbol of the late '80s--makes it difficult to hear KICK as simply an album. KICK isn't a pop culture icon on the level of BORN IN THE USA or IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS TO HOLD US BACK, but once you've hit a certain commercialthreshold and the inevitable backlash has set in (see also THE JOSHUA TREE and I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT), the musical worth of a disc ceases to matter much. KICK's five hits are easily its best tracks, and the remaining seven range from excellent to inoffensive. If you want to mentally recreate 1988, look no further. SKU: 1005058

Everything And Nothing
Personnel includes: David Sylvian (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, electric piano, organ, keyboards, synthesizer, programming, loops, sound effects); Ingrid Chavez (vocals); Ryuichi Sakamoto (arranger, piano,Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer, marimba, programming, samples); Steve Tibbetts, Mark Ribot (acoustic & electric guitars); Phil Palmer (acoustic guitar & slide guitars); David Torn (electric guitar); Bill Frisell (guitar, dobro); Bill Nelson, Rob Dean, Robert Fripp (guitar); Arturo Stalteri (bouzouki); Damiano Puliti (cello); Lawrence Feldman (flute); Nicola Alesini (clarinet, soprano saxophone, keyboards, programming); Mel Collins (soprano saxophone); Mick Karn (alto & tenor saxophones, keyboards, bass, background vocals). Producers include: David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Rain Tree Crow, Steve Nye, David Bottrill. Compilation producer: David Sylvian. Engineers include: Dave Kent, Lolly Gardner, Pat McCarthy. Recorded between 1980 and 2000. EVERYTHING AND NOTHING is a two-disc set of "best of" tracks from David Sylvian's career (including some with former band Japan), previously unreleased recordings, and re-recorded or otherwise alternate versions of other tracks (initial copies also included a third disc of remixes and further alternate versions). Most collections spanning such a length of time (20 years!) are spotty at best, but Sylvian's career has been unusually consistent, both in terms of direction and quality, and EVERYTHING AND NOTHING is guided by a clarity of vision absent from most compilations. Listening to it is more like hearing a new David Sylvian record than a random sampling from his catalogue. HIghlights include the usual suspects; "Blackwater," "Ghosts," and "Godman," all standouts on the albums from which they were culled. Alongside those tracks, though, is the true meat of the collection. Among the best are the breathtaking "The Scent of Magnolia," "Some Kind of Fool"--recorded for Japan's seminal GENTLEMEN TAKE POLAROIDS album but unfinished at the time--and an alternate version of "Weathered Wall" (from BRILLIANT TREES) that far and away outstrips the original. An essential purchase for Sylvian fans. SKU: 1041358

Tea For The Tillerman [Remastered]
Personnel: Cat Stevens (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Alun Davies (guitar); John Rostein (violin); Del Newman (strings); John Ryan (bass); Harvey Burns (drums). Producer: Paul Samwell-Smith. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN is one of Cat Stevens's finest albums, and a gem in the crown of early 1970s singer/songwriterdom. Stevens manages to have his cake and eat it too, simultaneously achieving pop accessibility and artistic relevance. While inviting rhythms (buoyed by Stevens's dynamic acoustic strumming) and pop hooks abound, the feel is decidedly gentle and spare. Apart fromthe occasional string section, Stevens is accompanied only by a three-piece band as he sings his introspective lyrics with appreciable fervor. While there are some relatively conventional love songs here ("Hard Headed Woman," "Wild World"), the most memorable moments come when Stevens's lyrics venture further afield. "Father and Son" is a poignant but realistic and unsentimental portrait of the generation gap, capable of reducing any given dad or junior to tears. "On the Road to Find Out" and "But I Might Die Tonight" reflect Stevens's existential dilemmas, and the resulting spiritual quest that would later lead him to embrace the Islamic faith. The graceful beauty of arrangements, performances, and songs makes TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN a folk-rock classic. SKU: 1034407

Dance
Personnel includes: Gary Numan (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, percussion); Paul Gardner (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Rob Dean (guitar); Mick Karn (saxophone, bass); Roger Mason (keyboards); Roger Taylor, Cedric Sharpley (drums); Tim Steggles (percussion); Sean Lynch (programming). Recorded at Rock City Sound Studios, Shepperton, England. Digitally remastered by John Dent (1999, Loud Mastering). DANCE is an ironic title indeed for one of Gary Numan's latter- period recordings. This slab of decidedly un-danceable tunes, replete with Numan's trademark synth rhythms, beatboxes, and beautifully sculpted robotic-analog sounds, remains vastly underrated and unappreciated. Numan's compositional finesse has hardly ebbed over time. If anything, his obsession with sci-fi imagery has grown ever more fantastic ("A Subway Called You," "She's Got Claws"). "Slowcar to China" offers nearly quaint, purring beats and sparkling keyboards, while the stuttering rhythmic hiccups and bottom-end gank of "Night Talk" prove that Mick Karn's bass was integral to these recordings. DANCE certainly wasn't pop music-much of it is too odd and awry for radio exposure-but the album nonetheless managed to worm its way into numerous charts and hearts. With the new-electronic brigade discovering the retro joys of early '80s tech, DANCE is an albumthat warrants overdue re-evaluation. SKU: 1025979

Sweetheart Of The Rodeo [Remastered]
TheByrds: Roger McGuinn (vocals, guitar, banjo); Gram Parsons (vocals, guitar); Chris Hillman (vocals, bass, mandolin); Kevin Kelley (drums). Additional personnel: John Hartford (guitar, banjo); Clarence J. White (guitar); Lloyd Green, Jaydee Maness (steel guitar); Earl P. Ball (piano); Roy M. Huskey (bass); Jon Corneal (drums). Producer: Gary Usher. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Includes liner notes by David Fricke and Johnny Rogan. In the same year that Bob Dylan stepped back from his electric pilgrimages by releasing an album of roots-oriented morality tales, the Byrds took a symbolic flight to Nashville. Gone was Roger McGuinn's singular twelve-string guitar sound and the acid rock that had had an effect on everyone from the Monkees to the Velvet Underground. McGuinn now played banjo, and bassist Chris Hillman doubled on the mandolin, both seemingly reconsidering their musical approaches. And while Dylan remained the songwriter of choice, his tunes now sat alongside a rearranged hymn ("I Am A Pilgrim"), a bluegrass version of a famous outlaw tale (Woody Guthrie's "Pretty Boy Floyd"), and a cover of the Louvin Brothers ("The Christian Life"). This was a musical turn, turn, turn, indeed. The obvious catalyst for all this reconstruction was the arrival of young Gram Parsons, and SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO played as if it was his coming-out party. He introduced Hillman and McGuinn to a musical world that seemed totally foreign to these predecessors of the Summer of Love, but one which lay a scant hundred miles outside their L.A. windows, in Bakersfield. Parsons' most important act was to help shape the overall sound of the album, but he contributed two original songs as well--"One Hundred Years From Now" and "Hickory Wind," a signature composition he'd record again. SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO caused an entire musical community to reconsider the musical traditions of America. SKU: 1006349

Cosmic Thing
The B-52s: Keith Strickland, Kate Pierson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Fred Schneider (vocals, percussion); Cindy Wilson (vocals). Additional personnel: Nile Rodgers (guitar); Tommy Mandell, Philippe Saisse, Richard Hilton (keyboards); Sara Lee (bass, background vocals); Steve Ferrone, Sonny Emory, Charlie Drayton, Leroy Clouden (drums). The Uptown Horns: Chris Cioe, Paul Literal, Arno Hecht, Bob Funk, Carl Beatty. 1986's BOUNCING OFF THE SATELLITES found the B-52s in the throes of mourning (they'd lost guitarist Ricky Wilson). But they returned in 1989 with COSMIC THING, a corker that set up the band for '90s success. This is a glorious party of a collection and an album that should stand up to time and scrutiny. The B-52s benefit from the production of Nile Rodgers and Don Was. Numerous guest musicians, including ubiquitous bassist Sara Lee, only add to the fullness of this release. The southern swank of "Dry Country" marks the first B-52s song to pay homage to the band's Georgia roots. Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson feature heavily on the comely slacker anthem "Deadbeat Club". COSMIC THING's big hit, the fantastic "Love Shack," compels listeners to perform embarrassing and involuntary dance moves. But the album's true highlight is "Roam," a Wilson showcase with a lovely a cappella choir intro, a driving beat, and infectious handclaps. And don't miss the harmonies on "Bushfire" and"Topaz" or the quirky cable TV-themed "Channel Z." "Follow Your Bliss," as one song suggests, and add the indispensable COSMIC THING to your collection. Crosby, Stills And Nash
Personnel: David Crosby (vocals, guitar); Stephen Stills (vocals, guitar, organ, bass); Graham Nash (vocals). Additional personnel: Dallas Taylor (drums). It was big news in 1969 when former key members of the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and the Hollies--three of the finest bands of the '60s--splintered off to form their own trio. Despite their already-proven talents, few could have imagined the gossamer vocal blend that would become the trademark of supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash. The band's debut effectively provided the soundtrack to the summer of '69. For his part, Steve Stills keeps exploring the progressive folk-rock sound that he'd pioneered with Buffalo Springfield; signature tune "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" is an expansive, multi-section affair that makes full use of the group's vocal skills. Fresh from the Hollies, Graham Nash adds an accessible pop sensibility, epitomized by the effervescent ditty "Marrakesh Express." David Crosby, always the wild card in the Byrds, hereadds rough edges and flashes of mystery with his cutting protest rocker "Long Time Gone" and the exquisite art-folk of "Guinnevere." With this kind of firepower under its belt, it's no wonder CSN quickly became one of the biggest groups of their era. SKU: 1001822
