Generation Star Wars
Recorded in 1994. Those familiar with the cyberpunk antics of Atari Teenage Riot and the Digital Hardcore Recordings stable know to expect the unexpected from the young, moody, and easily bored Empire. His first proper solo album, 1994's GENERATION STAR WARS, is a rather raw new-guard techno epic laced with pronounced anti-rave implications. Given Empire's averred abhorrence of dance music's pharmacological subculture, the preponderance of drug references serves to amplify an overall tone of derision, supporting the music's resemblance to Richard D. James' contemporary (and equally sardonic) Caustic Window/Polygon Window recordings. Empire throws together acidic TB-909 and TB-303 lashings, bit-music technoburble, and brutalizing hip-hop breakbeats with DHR-worthy brio ("Stahl & Blausaure") and Wagnerian bluster ("Blutrote Nacht Uber Berlin") but also revels in slow-motion ambient folds and pleats ("13465," "Pussy Heroin," "Smack") anda smattering of robo-bleep electro. Shifts between storming techno and sumptuous texturology are abrupt--almost manic--with the disc's most mind-bending moments arising from the collision of hot and cold currents ("Lash the 90ties," "Maschinenvolk," "New Acid," "Microchipkinder"). "Sonyprotitutes" and the bubbly "Konsumfreiheit" (not to mention the singularly bizarre "N.Y. Summer I") lighten the tone just as GENERATION's intensity threatens to become overwhelming. SKU: 1058309

Take Your Shoes Off
Personnel: Robert Cray (vocals, guitar, bajo sexto); Steve Jordan (guitar, bajo sexto, keyboards, bass, drums, snare drum, percussion, background vocals); Jo-El Sonnier (accordion); Jim Horn (tenor & baritone saxophones); Bobby Keys, Jim Spake, Doug Moffet (tenor saxophone); James Mitchell (baritone saxophone); Scott Thompson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Jim Pugh (keyboards); Karl Sevareid (bass); Kevin Hayes (drums); The Nashelles (background vocals). The Memphis Horns: Andrew Love (tenor saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet). Engineers: Niko Bolas, Don Smith, Steve Jordan. Recorded at Woodland Studios, Nashville, Tennessee and Knotek, New York, New York. TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF finds Robert Cray picking up the Memphis soul thread that infused so much of 1997's SWEET POTATO PIE. Joined by the always-reliable Memphis Horns, Cray delivers another masterful batch of tunes that are as much a tip of the hat to Stax as they are to Chess. The bluesman's creamy vocals fall somewhere between Sam Cooke and Otis Redding and are particularly effective on the brassy "24-7 Man" and the pleading "Let Me Know." The R&B map is well traversed with Jim Pugh's flickering organ licks and Steve Jordan's solid playing (turning "It's All Gone" into a lost Hi track), while the strolling tempo on "There's Nothing Wrong" brings to mind Motown's finer moments. As always, the talented guitarist's choice of covers is an interesting mix. Willie Dixon's "Tollin' Bells" is presented with brushed drums and a reverberating chord that eerily replicates the song's title. Most interesting is a reading of Solomon Burke's "Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)" that finds Cray being joined by Cajun accordionist Jo-El Sonnier on an arrangement that Taj Mahal might have suggested. REVEIWS: Rolling Stone (5/27/99, pp.63-64) - 3 1/2 Stars (out of 5) - "...this is a slow-burning soul record - and one of the most focused of Cray's twenty-five year career..." Q (5/99, p.104) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...there are moments...incisive solo...punchy soul feel...cajun touches and funky riffs...which turn this into a thoroughly enjoyable album..." Melody Maker (5/1/99, p.36) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...Think Al Green, Stax and a time before machines ruled the world. Lovely." Living Blues (7-8/99, p.52) - "...his strongest in ages....Robert Cray has long brought a rich, subtle strength to his innovative blues/soul hybrid....TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF is something special." Entertainment Weekly (4/30/99, p.97) - "...Sure, Cray doesn't sound all that anguished on the heartache-got-me tracks, but overallhis Southern soul is winning." - Rating: B SKU: 1001541

Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Richard Marx, Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie (vocals). Producers: Richard Marx, David Cole, Humberto Gatica, Randy Jackson. Includes liner notes by Richard Marx. Although he began his career singing backup for musicians such as Lionel Richie and Madonna, Richard Marx made his mark on the pop music scene in 1987 with his hit single, "Don't MeanNothing." Over the next ten years, Marx racked up thirteen top five singles and four multi-platinum albums; his biggest are included on GREATEST HITS, including familiar songs like "Hold Onto the Nights," the sweet ballad "Now and Forever," and the kicky, uptempo "Satisfied." Other standouts include "Angel's Lullaby," which was included on the Pediatric AIDS Foundation benefit cd, FOR OUR CHILDREN TOO, and which Marx wrote for his young sons: "I was never alive til the day I was blessed with you/I hold you late at night/Knowing what I was put here to do." Blessed Are...
Personnel: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); Norman Blake (guitar, dobro); Pete Wade (guitar); Buddy Spicher (violin); Charlie McCoy (harmonica); Norbert Putnam (bass); Kenneth Buttrey (drums); The Nashville Strings, The Memphis Horns, The Holladay Singers, The Town And Country Singers. Recorded at Quadrafonic Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Perhaps Joan Baez's best-known album, 1971's BLESSED ARE is a double-album-length example of Baez at the point where she was moving away from pure folk into a more pop-oriented sound. Featuring her hit cover of the Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," a version which outraged many Band fans because they felt Baez misinterpreted the lyrics, the record also includes several other country-tinged rock covers, including the Stones' "Salt of the Earth," the Beatles' "LetIt Be" and Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night," alongside an impressive set of Baez folk-rock originals. "Fifteen Months" and the seven-minute ballad "Three Horses" are particular highlights. This remastered CD reissue includes a bonus CD single, "Plane Wreck At Los Gatos (Deportee)" and "Maria Dolores," two songs from a 7" which was included with early copies of the vinyl album. Three Days Grace
Three Days Grace: Adam, Neil, Brad. Recorded at Longview Farm Studios, North Brookfield, Massachusetts; Bearsville Studios, Woodstock, New York; Vespa Studios and A Room Full Of Stuff Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. When it comes to heavy-metal lyrics, historically there have been but a few options. If one isn't inclined to go the ever popular, Iron Maiden-approved demons and wizards route, he or she is really only left with Kiss-style macho chest-pounding, or bleak alienation of the type perfected by Metallica. With its self-titled U.S. debut album, THREE DAYS GRACE managesto add a fourth option by combining ultra-stripped-down, de-tuned monster riffs in the very best Black Sabbath/Melvins tradition with emo-esque, heart-on-the-sleeve, diary-like poetry worthy of a Deep Elm Records release. In addition, these north-of-the-border boys add a snap-tight, chorus pedal-heavy production sheen that recalls the greatest of all Canadian hard-rock trios, Rush (particularly that band's excellent, but oft-overlooked, 1990s albums COUNTERPARTS and TEST FOR ECHO). By combining the best elements of metal and emo, two often-opposing genres, THREE DAYS GRACE breathe new life into both styles. SKU: 6575423

Nuthin' Fancy
Cassette available on MCA (1616). NOTES: Lynyrd Skynyrd: Ronnie Van Zant (vocals); Allen Collins (guitar, piano, organ, Moog synthesizer, percussion, background vocals); Ed King (acoustic, electric &slide guitars, Moog bass); Gary Rossington (acoustic & electric guitar); Billy Powell (keyboards); Leon Wilkeson (bass, background vocals); Artimus Pyle (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Barry Harwood (dobro, mandolin); Jimmy Hall (harmonica); David Foster, Billy Powell (piano); Bobbye Hall (percussion). Producer: Al Kooper. Reissue producer: Ron O'Brien. Recorded at WEBB IV Studios, Atlanta, in January 1975 and Studio One, Doraville, Georgia in August 1974. Bonus live tracks recorded at Bill Graham's Winterland, San Francisco, California on April 27, 1975. Includes liner notes by Ron O'Brien. Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angeles, California). Besides being a touring warhorse, Lynyrd Skynyrd cranked out albums at a brisk rate during its original lineup's brief recording career, averaging at least one new release per year. 1975 saw the emergence of Skynyrd's third album in as many years, NUTHIN' FANCY. While the album didn't contain a smash hit single as had its predecessors ("Free Bird," "Sweet Home Alabama," etc.), it proved to be another solid collection of tough Southern rock. "Saturday Night Special" remains one of the band's fiercest rockers, while such other compositions as "On the Hunt" and "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller" have become Skynyrd standards as well. SKU: 5070416

Late Great Townes Van Zandt, The
The final album of Van Zandt's early period, 1973's LATE GREAT is one of his most accomplished efforts, both in terms of production and songwriting. It builds on HIGH, LOW AND IN BETWEEN's arrangement and song structure advances the way REVOLVER built on RUBBER SOUL. It features Van Zandt's first recording of other writers' work (including his pal Guy Clark's transcendent "Don't Let the Sunshine Fool Ya" and Hank Williams' classic "Honky Tonkin'"), but Townes' own writing was rarely sharper. The complex outlaw narrative "Pancho & Lefty" and the beautifully spare ballad "If I Needed You" are probably his two best-loved and most widely covered songs. "TheSilver Ships of Andilar" is an ominous, timeless sea-faring tale marked by both its literacy and adventurous orchestration. Townes' trademark folk-country style is well represented on the genial, wise "No Lonesome Tune" and the ironic faux-Gospel "Heavenly Houseboat Blues." SKU: 1086080

History
Additional personnel: The Roches, The McGarrigles, Syd Straw. The title of this Loudon Wainwright album refers not to a look back at the singer/songwriter's career, but to his own life, a place that has proven a rich source for some of Wainwrigth's finest material over the years. "The Picture" examines the way that the passage of time has affected his own family. "Hitting You" is a chilling recollection of an incident in which Wainwright struck one of his children in a rash fit of anger. That the incident has remained so vivid is a testament his continued undiminished self-disgust over a moment that took place decades prior. Wainwright captures a sense of our common humanity in both that moment and the enduring memory. "Talking New Bob Dylan" takes a typically humorous look at the fact that Wainwright was branded a "new Bob Dylan" when he emerged around 1970 (afate which befell scores of guitar-toting male singer/songwriters at the time).
