Heads leader David Byrne directed the film True Stories, which layed out the surreal vision of modern American life often expressed in Talking Heads songs. In the film, the songs Byrne wrote for it are sung by the actors, but this album features the Talking Heads'own versions of those compositions. Though it came towards the end of their career, TRUE STORIES is perhaps the most '80s-sounding Heads album, the recordings full of compression, electronic percussion and synthesizers.
The songs pick up on the heavily rhythmic, world music-inflected sound the band established a few years earlier, but with more of a pop/rock compositional approach. Despite the relative lack of sonic experimentation or quirkiness, there are some solid tunes here, like the catchy, funky "Puzzlin' Evidence" and the album's sole hit "Wild, Wild Life," an ironic rocker that could have come straight off LITTLE CREATURES.

The real challenge of this second release from Nashville singer/songwriter Josh Rouse is to identify its weakness. Throughout these 10 tracks, Rouse sings in an affecting, androgynous confluence of tones and timbral colors, weaving tales of heartache and loss across smartly deployed hook-rich instrumental backdrops. In his voice, one can make out the sweetly torn world-weariness of Whiskeytown's Ryan Adams, the goosebump-inducing glissando flourishes of Jeff Buckley (see the exquisite "100m Backstroke"), and the smokiness of an aged female jazz singer.
Subtle instrumental shadings add grace, warmth, and beauty to the arrangements. There's the clarion trumpet melody that emerges from the chorus of "Marvin Gaye," the subtle female backing vocals of "Directions," and the warming cello of "Parts and Accessories." Fuller instrumentation enlivens "And Around" and "Little Know It All," both ofwhich recall the more down-tempo and de-funkified incarnations of Lambchop (with whose principal, Kurt Warner, Rouse collaborated for the CHESTER EP). One almost imagines the former, which is perhaps the highlight of the set, to be a lost Jimmy Scott track reconstituted with pedal-steel guitar--the perfect accompaniment to a darkened early-summer drive across Nebraska.

Although you can't really assemble the ultimate Armstrong collection if you don't have the rights to the Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings of the late 1920s, there's plenty of Louis Armstrong here, creatively assembled and covering the span of his lengthy and immeasurably influential career. Disc One begins with recordings cut with various leaders, including Fletcher Henderson. It then jumps from 1927 to 1935, when Armstrong was already well established as the leader of his own orchestra, which varied in size from record date to record date. There are also scattered cuts involving the Mills Brothers, Bing Crosby and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra.
Disc Two includes material from 1949 through 1951, including numerous small group sessions with musicians like Sidney Bechet and Zutty Singleton, a vocal duet with Louis Jordan on "You Rascal, You" and, from 1950 and '51, Louis Armstrong And The All Stars, featuring Barney Bigard, Earl Hines, Arvell Shaw, and Cozy Cole. Disc Three wraps things up with "Hello Dolly" and "What a Wonderful World," but not before offering more All Stars, some orchestral numbers, and a couple of cuts with Oscar Peterson's quartet.

Mark Everett, the Eels mastermind commonly known simply as E, has been around the block enough to know how to distill his craft to its essence. That's just what he does on SHOOTENANNY, having previously released six Eels albums and two as A Man Called E. He's as unapologetically misery-laden as ever, of course, but we wouldn't have him any other way. Even whenhe makes a romantic entreaty, all he can ultimately offer to the object of his affection is the "Love of the Loveless."
What's most remarkable is the way he's pared things down production-wise. For an artist known as a wizard of popcraft in terms of both writing and arrangements, E keeps things surprisingly spare and simple throughout the album. The bulk of the songs, while retaining an undeniable pop sensibility, are musically straightforward pop-rock romps with little ornamentation and few quirky sonic touches. Uncomplicated guitar riffs and keyboard patterns power these directly emotive compositions. Did we mention that he was still miserable? E revels ironically in that emotion on the aptly titled "Agony," where he muses "maybe I need some psychiatric help" over a torturous 6/8 groove. SHOOTENANNY offers music and emotions pared to the bone, but it'll fill you up in due course.

Even amid the rash of alt-country bands that cropped up in the mid-to-late '90s, it's not easy to lose sight of theJayhawks; the Minneapolis quartet has been making honest, superbly crafted, country-tinged roots rock since the late '80s. On BLUE EARTH, the follow-up to the band's debut, frontmen/singers/guitarists/songwriters Gary Louris and Mark Olson burrow even deeper into the tradition of "Cosmic American Music" pioneered by Gram Parsons and SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO-era Byrds.
The record draws on various traditional sources, from the country-fried melodicism of "Dead End Angel," through the Neil Young-style balladry of "Ain't No End," to up-tempo hillbilly jags such as "The Baltimore Sun," yet never sounds stale or derivative. The magic created by Louris and Olson's guitar interplay and perfectly calibrated harmonies (note the gorgeous twang and lilt of album's opener, "Two Angels") charges these tracks with a clear, utterly unpretentious light. Though The Jayhawks would go on to refine their sound on later albums, BLUE EARTH is still a standout recording.

The two guitar-based, pseudo-hardcore punk songs on EVERYTHING IS WRONG whetted Moby's appetite for destruction enough to yield ANIMAL RIGHTS, an album that is chock-full of guitars. Although ANIMAL RIGHTS is book-ended by two melancholy acoustic guitar and violin duets ("Now I Let it Go" and "Love Song for My Mother"), the rest of the record contains the kind of raucous and loud music Moby made with the obscure punk band the Vatican Commandos. Fans of Moby's ambient work might not find this record as appealing as those who favor Moby's aggressive side. However, it might be hard for anyone to resist the hard soloing on songs like the Prince-meets-Minor Threat thrash-fest "Come on Baby" or the slam-fests that are "Someone to Love," "Heavy Flow," and "You." "Soft" and "Say it's All Mine" bring the pace down for a few moments to allow those slam-dancing in their bedrooms to rest for a moment. "Face it" could almost pass for a Black Sabbath cover. The excellent"That's When I Reach for My Revolver" is a Mission of Burma cover.

A sumptuously packaged, well-annotated four-disc, 64-track box set, CHARLIE PARKER AT BIRDLAND collects every note the alto saxophone legend played at New York's famed jazz club Birdland between February 1950 and April 1951. The material was primarily recorded for the famous jazz radio show "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid." Despite the assertion made in a clever 1998 Levi's commercial, Birdland was not named after Charlie "Bird" Parker. However, Parker played there whenever he was in town, often with his own band but primarily in the company of New York's finest bebop players. The liner notes read like a "Who's Who of Bebop"--former Parker sideman Miles Davis, who at the time was leading his own BIRTH OF THE COOL nonet, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Bud Powell, and many others make appearances. This is live bebop at its finest.

The Jam was the punk successor to the Kinks, Small Faces, and the Who, known for its punchy instrumental work and Paul Weller's politically and class-conscious lyrics. Though hugely popular in England, the trio only achieved cult status in America. Despitethis fact, a handful of acts from the colonies check in to pay tribute to these UK icons.
Not surprisingly, the Gallagher Brothers lead the charge as elder sib Noel delivers a poignant version of the fall-from-fame "To Be Someone" while Liam teams up with Ocean Colour Scene's Steve Cradock on an echo-heavy reading of the obscure "Carnation." Much of FIRE & SKILL includes faithful renditions of the Jam as delivered by Reef ("That's Entertainment"), Ben Harper ("The Modern World"), and Gene ("Town Called Malice"). Among the more interesting deviations from the originals are Garbage's postmodern trip-hop rendition of "The Butterfly Collector," the Beastie Boys' stripped-down and funked-up "Start." (featuring Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori on vocals), and Everything But the Girl's delicate treatment of "English Rose." The cherry on the top of this tasty musical sundae is a hidden track of Paul Weller crooning "No One in the World."

WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT, the Velvet Underground's second album, is the band at their most hard-edged and skillfully perverse. It introduced guitar sounds and production so abrasive that the feel wasn't duplicated until some 15 years later when punk had matured into New York's downtown art/noise scene with bands like Sonic Youth.
WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT is also an exhausting exercise in opposites. The aching beauty of "Here She Comes Now" features a delicate guitar melody and Reed's most innocent vocals since the debut's "Sunday Morning." The title track would even be playful if not for the instrumental speed rushes and vocal harmonies so discordant they're sinister. It also turns out to be a perfect primer for "Sister Ray," a depraved freak show of prostitutes, junkies, and what happens when the cops come banging at the door. Musically, "Sister Ray" is a jarring guitar crash, clocking in at 17:25, fully showingthe Velvets' musical ferociousness. Such snapshots into the Velvet Underground's two sides make WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT indispensable.

The popular multi-ethnic '60s potpourri of pop, folk, paganism, and pure whimsy purveyedby Donovan and the Incredible String Band created a demand for similar sounds. Island Records snapped up Incredible String Band associates Dr. Strangely Strange, while EMI found its own band of merry minstrels in one of UK disc-jockey John Peel's favorites, Forest. The band crafted two wonderful albums, collected in this double-disc set, then returned to their home county of Lincolnshire, leaving their music for the ages.
1969's FOREST overcomes rough production with sublime harmonies, inventive arrangements, and strong songwriting. These dozen tracks, brimming with the band's beguiling blend of guitars, hand percussion, pastoral pipes, Pan flutes, and organs, are every bit as timeless as the country airs of outfits such as Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. "Sylvie," "Nothing Else Will Matter," and "Fading Light" even embrace pop choruses. 1970's FULL CIRCLE incorporates crystalline production into an even stronger set. Forest, working with producer Malcolm Jones, here opt for sparer, more adventurous arrangements, borrowing freely from progressive, country, and psychedelic forms. The fragile fairytale "Bluebell Dance" stands out, but each of these 10 tracks is a masterpiece.

Though there are no tracks here that were recorded specifically for the film, the BANDITS soundtrack dips into the catalogs of Aretha Franklin, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, and Bob Dylan, making for a classic rock record with considerably more class than usual. In addition, some newer artists, culled from Columbia Records' fecund roster of adult-contemporary singer-songwriters, make appearances, among them Five for Fighting ("Superman [It's Not Easy]") and Pete Yorn ("Just Another"), both of whom contribute rootsy, melodic pop from their recent releases.
English '80s pop star Tanita Tikaram contributes the chestnut "Twist inMy Sobriety," while Bonnie Tyler brings both "Holding Out for a Hero" and "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Dylan offers up the bluesy "Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum" (from his recent LOVE AND THEFT), and Page and Plant revisit Led Zeppelin's "Gallows Pole," which sounds surprisingly current--just one of BANDITS' many unexpected delights.
