Famous Monsters
The Misfits: MichaelGraves (vocals); Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein (guitar); Jerry Only (bass); Dr. Chud (drums). Who on earth could have imagined that without founding father and vocalist Glenn Danzig, the Misfits could come back almost 20 years after their breakup with not one, but two killer albums? As difficult as it is to believe, FAMOUS MONSTERS proves that the Misfits reunion was no fluke. No musical ground is broken, but with the Misfits, the same old horror show seems to fit like a comfortable iron gauntlet. Familiar themes dominate the album: horror movies such as "Crawling Eye," "Pumpkin Head," "Them," (even "Lost in Space" gets a song); and preoccupations such as death, destruction, and disembowelment. But instead of feeling like a rehash, FAMOUS MONSTERS simply crackles with ghoulish fun. Michael Graves may be no Danzig, but when was the last time Glenn Danzig sang a song as refreshing as "Dust to Dust" or "The Forbidden Zone?" Producer Daniel Rey (who co-wrote many of the songs) mixes the songs sympathetically, keeping Doyle's guitar from overwhelming the trademark vocals. Somehow or other, the Misfits are back, and apparently to stay. SKU: 5052960

Forty Licks (The Definitive Rolling Stones Collection 1962-2002)
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica, percussion); Keith Richards (acoustic & electric guitar, bass, bowed double bass, background vocals); Mick Taylor (electric & slide guitars, bass); Brian Jones (electric guitar, sitar, recorder, harmonica, piano, marimba, tamboura, background vocals); Ron Wood (electric guitar, background vocals); Bill Wyman (bass, maracas, background vocals); Charlie Watts (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Merry Clayton (vocals); Sugar Blue (harmonica); Bobby Keyes (saxophone, percussion); Mel Collins (saxophone); Chuck Leavell (piano, organ, keyboards); Nicky Hopkins, Ian Stewart, Ian McLagan, Al Kooper (piano); Don Was (keyboards); Darryl Jones (bass); Blondie Chaplin (percussion, background vocals); Sly Dunbar, Luis Jardin (percussion); Clydie King, Vanetta, Ivan Neville, Bernard Fowler, Lisa Fischer, Sara Dash, Doris Troy, Madeline Bell, Nanette Newman, Marianne Faithfull, Anita Pallenberg (background vocals); The London Bach Choir. Includes a 24 page color booklet with liner notes by David Wild. Thirty years after the release of what had been the definitive Rolling Stones anthology, HOT ROCKS, the arrival of the two-disc Stones collection FORTY LICKS seemed bound to prompt compare/contrast debates. In the end, it's pretty much an apples-and-oranges situation. HOT ROCKS does have some great '60s tracks absent from the later release, but time is on the side of FORTY LICKS, which takes advantage of access to all the Stones' great post-1971 material, which is abundant, despite cynics' protests to the contrary. So besides the early hits/classics it shares with HOT ROCKS ("Satisfaction," "Brown Sugar," "Jumping Jack Flash," you know the drill), FORTY LICKS offers the stuttering, sassy "Start Me Up," the sensual, disco-tinged "Miss You," mission statement "It's Only Rock 'N Roll (But I Like It)," and such tearjerkers as "Fool to Cry" and "Angie." Impressively, FORTY LICKS simultaneously captures the glory of the Stones' firstcouple of phases and puts the lie to the benighted notion that the early '70s were this hardy band's last hurrah. And that's not even mentioning the four new, previously unreleased tracks these seemingly indefatigable icons saw fit to throw in. SKU: 1075906

Hejira
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Larry Carlton (acoustic & electric guitars); Abe Most (clarinet); Neil Young (harmonica); Chuck Findley, Tom Scott (horns); Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Jaco Pastorius, Max Bennett, Chuck Domanico (bass); John Guerin (drums); Bobbye Hall (percussion). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Joni Mitchell draws freely on her heroes and influences, and in her turn inspires and informs the work of countless others; thus are the genes of our musical heritage passed on to new generations. The love of jazz glimpsed in COURT AND SPARK and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS is wanton in HEJIRA. The arrangements are loose and the melodies seductively free-flowing. The lyrics, too, have broken free of rigid verse and rhyme structures and tend towards prose poetry. The cloak of introspection that weighs down on muchof her work is lighter here; though far from mainstream. The chiming flanged guitar throughout, is inspired. SKU: 1013243

Leadbelly Legacy Vol.3 (Shout On)
Personnel includes: Leadbelly (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Woody Guthrie (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Brownie McGhee, Cisco Houston (vocals, guitar); Sonny Terry (vocals, harmonica); Willie "The Lion" Smith (piano); George "Pops" Foster (bass). Recorded between 1941 and 1948 in New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Pete Seeger, Jeff Place and Kip Lornell. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Volume 3 of a 3-volume set of the classic Smithsonian Folkways Archive recordings from the 1940's, SHOUT ON is indispensable Leadbelly.Remastered from the original source material, this collection includes unreleased tracks, bibliographies, discographies and liner notes with extensive annotations and remarks by Pete Seeger. The range of emotion and tone Leadbelly displays on these tracks is notable: unmistakable tenderness on "Little Children's Blues," seductive crooning on "Come Sit Down Beside Me," sheer manic energy on "John Henry." The album also includes topically relevant songs about the Second World War (including "National Defense Blues"), collaborations with Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston (including "Ham and Eggs" and "Midnight Special") and songs for children (including "Rooster Crows at Midnight" and "What Are Little Boys Made Of"). His experiences in life and love (including his days as a physical laborer and a penitentiary inmate) make up a great deal of the material and Lead Belly relates them with the ease of a fine story-teller by means of his loose, simple guitar playing and warm, expressive vocals. Excellent throughout, SHOUT ON (either alone or as part of the set) is quintessential for any folk music collector. SKU: 5053020

Dreamland
Personnel: Robert Plant (vocals); Justin Adams (guitar, ghimbri); Porl Thompson (guitar); B.J. Cole (pedal steel); John Baggott (keyboards); Charlie Jones (bass); Clive Deamer (drums, percussion); Raj Das, May Clee Cadman, Ginny Clee (background vocals). DREAMLAND was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album. "Darkness, Darkness" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. While there's nothing particularly retro aboutthe proceedings on DREAMLAND, Robert Plant's first solo album of the 21st century finds him reaching back to his roots. This entails not so much a return to the turbo-blues bombast of Led Zeppelin, but a look even further back to the country blues that inspired the young, pre-Zep Plant, and to the kind of psych-folk troubadours whose magic filled the air when "Stairway to Heaven" was just a gleam in Jimmy Page's eye. Towards this end, Plant deconstructs/reconstructs old blues tunes such as "Fixin' To Die" and "Win My Train Fare Home" as well as tackling material by the likes of Tim Buckley (the shimmering "Song to the Siren," Skip Spence (the Moby Grape-era "Skip's Song"), and Bob Dylan (a Middle Eastern-tinged take on "One More Cup of Coffee"). Though most of Plant's solo career has frankly not been rife with memorable songs, he comes up with a number of impressive original tunes here, showing that he knows how to keep up with the present and the future as well as the past. Shake Your Money Maker
This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. This CD is also available as part of the 5-CD SHO' NUFF box set. The Black Crowes: Chris Robinson (vocals); Rich Robinson, JeffCease (guitar); Johnny Colt (bass); Steve Gorman (drums, cymbals). Additional personnel: Brendan O'Brien (various instruments); Chuck Leavell (piano, organ); Laura Creamer (background vocals). Recorded at Soundscape Studios, Atlanta, Georgia; Chapel Studios, Paramount Studios & Grandmaster Studios, Los Angeles, California. When the Black Crowes released SHAKE YOUR MONEYMAKER in 1989, the alternative music revolution was a couple of years off as hair bands and mall queens cluttered the airwaves. The Crowes' debut was a straightforward rock & roll album named for an Elmore James song and recorded by a band fronted by an impossibly skinny lead singer and a pair of riff-happy guitarists. Sure, songs such as "Sister Luck," "Twice As Hard" and "Jealous Again" may have struck a little close to the sound the Rolling Stones and Faces were trading in during the early '70s, but there was nothing contrived about the Black Crowes' music. Despite being in their early 20's at the time, brothers Chris and Rich Robinson showed a knack for writing about soul-searching ("Seeing Things") and tragic characters ("She Talks To Angels") when they weren't busy tearing up the joint ("Thick N'Thin"). These sons of the south even turned a new generation on to fellow Georgian Otis Redding when they covered his "Hard To Handle." This album not only kicked off a controversial career but helped put Rick Rubin's fledgling label on the map. SKU: 6488870

Score, The (Refugee Camp)
Fugees (Refugee Camp): Lauryn Hill, Prakazrel "Pras," Wyclef. Additional personnel: Garfield "Gus" Parkinson (vocals); Red Alert, Ras Baraka (spoken vocals); Handel Tucker(keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums, programming); John Forte (programming); Backspin (scratches); Forte, Omega, Diamond D, Pace 1, Young Zee, Ra Digga. Producers include: Wyclef, Shawn King, Lauryn Hill, Salaam Remi, John Forte. Recorded at The Booga Basement Studio, East Orange, New Jersey; The Crib and Quad Studios, New York, New York; Anchor Recording Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. THE SCORE won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, and "Killing Me Softly" won a 1997 Grammy for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The album was also nominated for Album Of The Year. On their second album, the Fugees utilize a couple of the mid-'90s trends in hip-hop--cinematic construct and references to Asian fighting techniques. But THE SCORE transcends much of the genre's recent output, because it's as much about musicality as it is about beats. In fact, deep beats often take a back seat to tense, noir grooves. More importantly, all three rappers--Haitian males, Wyclef and Pras, and New Jerseyite female, Lauryn Hill--swing hard, syncopating around the beats like jazz instrumentalists, making THE SCORE a complex and challenging listen. THE SCORE also boasts some of the most intelligent, non-exclusionary rhymes in recent memory. Wyclef claims to "run through Crown Heights/Screaming out Mazel Tov" and Hill draws parallels between herself and both Nina Simone and Elliot Ness. Too politically astute and musically talented to fall into the ruts of rap cliches and dependence on overused samples, the Fugees are placing a significant, personalized stamp on the direction of hip-hop. Night Nurse
Personnel: Gregory Isaacs (vocals); Eric "Bingy Bunny" Lamont, DwightPickney (guitar); "Steelie" Johnson (keyboards); Wally Badarou (synthesizer); Errol "Flabba Holt" Carter (bass); Lincoln "Style" Scott (drums). Producers: Gregory Isaacs, "Flabba" Holt. Reissue producer: Dana G. Smart. Recorded at Tuff Gong Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Includes liner notes by David Katz. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Island Records "Reggae Classics" series. A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound. Everybody Digs Bill Evans
Bill Evas Trio: Bill Evans (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums). Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on December 15, 1958. Originally released on Riverside (1129). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Bill Evans's second date as a leader was a breakthrough session, firmly establishing him as a highly influential new voice in jazz near the tail end of 1958. His first solo record, 1956's NEW JAZZ CONCEPTIONS, while a respectable effort, was a relatively pallid affair, and left Evans feeling dissatisfied with his playing and "conception" both. Despite Riverside label owner/producer Orrin Keepnews' persistent entreaties, Evans would not return to the studio until he was ready. "Minority," the Gigi Gryce hard bop original which opens EVERYBODY DIGS.., demonstrates that he was indeed ready, and then some. Anyone who thinks of Evans as a neo-impressionist will be startled by the pianist's hard driving swing here, propelled by the ace Miles Davis rhythm section of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Evan's famously golden tone, both hard and highly malleable, glows on the breathlessly slow "Young And Foolish," with its astonishly beautiful coda, andthe two solo forays taken from Bernstein's On the Town --"Lucky To Be Me" and the celebrated improvisation "Peace Piece," based on the Satie-like opening chords to "Some Other Time." An extra CD bonus is the inclusion of the original "Some Other Time." SKU: 1011834

I Am Sam
Original score composed by John Powell. I AM SAM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Compilation Album For A Motion Picture Or Television.. In the film I AM SAM, Sean Penn's title character is a mentally challenged, Beatles-obsessed character who lands in the middle of a custody case for his daughter. With Sam looking to the Fab Four's music for guidance, the accompanying soundtrack is wall-to-wall Lennon-McCartney. Rebuffed for the rights to the original songs, the album's organizers instead recruited an all-star array oftalent to contribute Beatles covers within a three-week span. The quick turn-around time meant delightfully original interpretations of these stellar songs as opposed to by-the-numbers readings. Among the many highlights are Ben Harper's psychedelic "Strawberry Fields Forever," a chiming Aimee Mann/Michael Penn duet on "Two Of Us" and Chocolate Genius' ethereal "Julia." Elsewhere, Eddie Vedder delivers an acoustic-driven "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" through gritted teeth, Sheryl Crow adds a nice country twang to "Mother Nature's Son," and Stereophonics' raspy take on "Don't Let Me Down" sounds like a Faces outtake. Although The Black Crowes offer up a stark arrangement of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," Grandaddy's chugging alt-rock version of "Revolution" and Nick Cave's melancholy crooning of "Let It Be" make I AM SAM worth the price of admission. At Folsom Prison [SACD]
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only in Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Johnny Cash (vocals, guitar); June Carter, The Carter Family (vocals); Carl Perkins, Luther Perkins (electric guitar); Marshall Grant (drums); The Statler Brothers (background vocals). Producer: Bob Johnston. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded live at Folsom Prison, Folsom, California on January 13, 1968. Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash and Steve Earle. Want to hear part of the reason why Johnny Cash is an icon, a singer respected and influential in country, folk, and rock & roll? THIS isit! In 1968--one of the most tumultuous years in American history since the Depression years--Cash recorded an album live in front of a (literally) captive (but wildly appreciative) audience, in Folsom Prison. With two guitars, bass, drums, and a small vocal group (including Cash's wife June Carter Cash and the Statler Brothers), Cash sings his hits and lesser-known songs ("Send a Picture of Mother") and some haunting country standards ("Dark as a Dungeon"), as well as songs about REAL outlaws ("Cocaine Blues") to a rapt audience that hangs on every word. That boom-chicka-boom sound is sharp as the first mean wind of winter, and Cash is in fine fettle (though his voice cracks from time to time). With its unique setting, this is as harrowing an album as any ever recorded. SKU: 1071281

Through The Years
Full title: The Very Best Of Roy Wood: Through The Years. This collection includes Wood's work with The Move, ELO and Wizzard. For most of his career, which began in Birmingham in the mid-'60s with the group who became The Move, Roy Wood has recorded for various offshoots of the EMI label. Yet, bizarrely, it wasn't until 2000 that someone thought to trace Wood's entire artistic history on one CD. Combining tracks from The Move, the Electric Light Orchestra, Wizzard, and Wood's classic solo albums BOULDERS and MUSTARD, THE VERY BEST OF ROY WOOD: THROUGH THE YEARS is the best possibleintroduction of one of pop music's most brilliantly eccentric geniuses. The Move's four tracks, including the singles "California Man" and "Tonight," are typically excellent, and ELO's "10538 Overture," though a Jeff Lynne composition, is the song which most exemplifies Wood's contribution to that group, which he founded and left after their debut. The Wizzard and solo tracks are whimsical art-glam-pop as weird and wonderful as anything from the era. SKU: 3104580

Is A Woman
Lambchop includes: Kurt Wagner (vocals, guitar, keyboards, Moog synthesizer). Recorded at Quad Studio, The Groove Room, and Sound Emporium, Nashville, Tennessee between January and July 2001. Their sixth album in eight years finds Lambchop weaving ever more intricate tapestries in their luxuriously unfolding music. Kurt Wagner's vocals exude confidence with such subtle passion that they creep up on you, revealing more with every listen. There are wonderfully rich juxtapositions in IS A WOMAN's production, as quiet horns and occasional strings blend with steel guitar and massed electric guitars, but never sound any louder than a small combo. This is particularly notable as there are over a dozen members in this troupe. This time out the songs are based more on a foundation of piano than before. A core of eight or nine members recorded the basics live in the studio, with other layers being added later. The arrangements are always in service to the songs, where each smallmovement matters. Lambchop are an orchestral combo in the truest sense, without being anything like a traditional orchestra. With IS A WOMAN they achieve a new level of intimacy; love and beauty are the substance of both the songs and the sound. SKU: 1069214
