Moment, The
Personnel includes: Kenny G (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones, various instruments); Babyface (vocals, programming); Toni Braxton (vocals); Walter Afanasieff (various instruments); Michael Thompson (guitar); Greg Phillinganes (piano); Dan Shea (keyboards, programming); Nathan East (bass); Paulinho De Costa, Sheila E. (percussion); Marc Nelson, Dede O'Neal (background vocals). Producers: Kenny G, Babyface, Walter Afanasieff. Engineers include: Steve Shepherd, Brad Gilderman, Dana Jon Chappelle. "Havana" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. To say that Kenny G has found himself a niche in our musical landscape would be a pretty serious understatement. He has built a monumental career by catering to the needs of a healthy portion of the record-buying public--music that soothes the soul, warms the heart and, perhaps most important, places no undue stress on the brain. THE MOMENT, Kenny G's ninth release, continues the trend--Mr. G. is no fool. Nor is he a slouch on the soprano saxophone. His inspiredsoloing on the aptly-named, Latin-tinged "Havana," the clean funk of "Eastside Jam" and the high drama of "The Champions Theme" demonstrate his strengths as a musician who understands the importance of melody and line better than many singers. But not all singers. Toni Braxton and Babyface do guest spots on THE MOMENT, and they fit in beautifully. Braxton makes a characteristically sexy contribution to "That Somebody Was You." The lusciously smooth "Everytime I Close My Eyes" gets the full Babyface treatment, which, as most R&B aficionados will tell you, makes for a pretty special track. So special, in fact, that Babyface includes it on his own latest release, THE DAY. SKU: 5063262

Crossing Muddy Waters
Personnel: John Hiatt (vocals, acoustic guitar, National resaphonic guitar, harmonium); David Immergluck (acoustic, electric, 12-string & slide guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Davey Faragher (bass, percussion, background vocals). Recorded from April 23-26, 2000. CROSSING MUDDY WATERS was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Hearing this stripped-down effort from songwriter extraordinaire John Hiatt, it's hard to imagine why he bothered with all the production on his previous recordings. Theformat is a simple one--Hiatt accompanied by a bassist and mandolinist/guitarist--and it serves the songs well. Not only do Hiatt's smart, but unpretentious lyrics get maximum exposure, but he leans in toward the concept as well, accentuating the country blues element of his sound so as to benefit further from the earthy setting. There's so much of what sounds like post-divorce material here that one can't help but think of BLOOD ON THE TRACKS-era Dylan. In fact, if circa-2000 Dylan released an album with these songs, it would be hailed as a masterpiece a la TIME OUT OF MIND. Unlike the latter, though, CROSSING MUDDY WATERS doesn't just leave the listener in an emotional wilderness. This album is ultimately the sound of Hiatt trying to discover a new life amid the wreckage and a way to move on. It's this glimmer of hope that makes MUDDY WATERS a vital, well-balanced album. Sheryl Crow
Personnel: Sheryl Crow (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, Hammond organ, harmonium, keyboards, bass, Wurlitzer, pennyosley, loops); Jeff Trott (vocals, acoustic guitar, guitar, loops); Neil Finn (vocals); Todd Wolfe (electric guitar, guitar); Steve Donnelly (electric guitar, dobro); RSBryan (guitar); Jane Scarpantoni (strings); Mitchell Froom (harmonium, keyboards); Steve Berlin (saxophone); Bob Stewart, Curtis Fowlkes, Dave Douglas, Josh Roseman (horns); Davey Faragher, Dan Rothchild, Tad Wadhams, Anders Rundblad (bass); Wally Ingram (drums, djembe); Brian MacLeod (drums, loops); Pete Thomas, Jim Keltner, Michael Urbano (drums). Engineers include: Trina Shoemaker, Blair Lamb, Tchad Blake. Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory and Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California; Kingsway Studio, New Orleans, Louisiana. SHERYL CROW won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "If It Makes You Happy" won a 1997 Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. "Everyday Is A Winding Road" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Record Of The Year. Since crashing the gates with 1993's TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB, Sheryl Crow's brand of melodic pop has won her some Grammys and kept her constantly on the road. On the followup album, the one-time background singer retains her sweet delivery laced with gruff edges, while painting her sunny sound with darker shadings. Quirky characters and situations continue to inhabit Crow's songs, whether it's holy rollers and government conspirators ("Maybe Angels") or a homeless evangelist proselytizing outside a supermarket ("Hard To Make A Stand"). While Crow could easily content herself by writing about assorted oddballs, real-life manifests itself assuredly on SHERYL CROW. Her trip to entertain troops in war-torn Bosnia is reflected in the wasted virtues and exploding shells of "Redemption Day." And in "Love Is A Good Thing," she sings pointedly about firearm sales and their consequences. SKU: 1013920

Kings Of The Wild Frontier [Remastered]
Adam & The Ants: Adam Ant, Marco Pirroni (vocals, guitar); Kevin Mooney (bass); Merrick, Terry Lee Miall (drums). 1980's KINGS OFTHE WILD FRONTIER was actually the second Adam and the Ants record, preceded by an unremarkable postpunk indie effort called DIRK WEARS WHITE SOX, recorded with the musicians who later became Bow Wow Wow. However, it became a massive commercial breakthrough and one of the defining albums of early '80s British chart pop. Mixing the sort of booming double-drummer rhythms Gary Glitter had popularized years before with a certain post-postpunk cynicism and a remarkable flair for self-mythology, Adam Ant (born Stuart Goddard) and his cohorts, led by ex-Banshees guitarist Marco Pirroni and producer/drummer Chris Hughes, created a bubblegum-pop gem on the same level as the early albums by The Sweet and the Bay City Rollers (which is meant as a compliment). Led by the classic single "Antmusic," the album also features the pounding "Physical (You're So)," and several other goofy gems. SKU: 6563746

Tubeway Army [Remastered]
TUBEWAY ARMY contains a 1978 live recording that was previously available only as a bootleg entitled LIVE AT THE ROXY. Personnel: Gary Numan (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Paul Gardiner (bass); Bob Simmonds (drums). Producers include: Gary Numan. Engineers include: Mike Kemp. Recorded at Spaceward Studios, Cambridge and live atThe Roxy, London, England. Includes liner notes by Steve Malins. Although Gary Numan is now remembered as the electronic-pop pioneer who penned the futuristic 1980 hit "Cars," Numan wasn't always a synth-rock visionary. Back in 1977, Numan and his band, Tubeway Army, crashed London's punk-rock party with an album and handful of singles that blended the raw edginess of punk with precise, riff-heavy guitar rock and Numan's surreal sci-fi lyrics. TUBEWAY ARMY was Numan's first album-length recording and finds him just starting to develop the synthesizer-fueled sound that made him a star. While Numan colors a few tracks with a swooshing synth noodles and ominous droning sounds, most of TUBEWAY ARMY is comprised of gutsy guitar rock like "Listen to the Sirens" and "The Life Machine." Powered by surging guitar riffs and Numan's detached, robotic vocal style, the songs stand up quite well when compared to Numan's latter hits. The reissue of TUBEWAY ARMY also features 13 live tracks that were recorded at the Roxy Club in London. All of the tracks--including a searing rendition of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat"--predate the album and capture Numan and his band in all their ragged punkish glory. SKU: 4123899

Works For Me
Personnel: John Scofield (guitar); Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone); Brad Mehldau (piano); Christian McBride (bass); Billy Higgins (drums). Recored at Avatar Studios, New York, New York from January 6-8, 2000. Includes liner notes by John Scofield. John Scofield describes the ensemble on WORKS FOR ME, made up ofyoung jazz stars like alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett, pianist Brad Mehldau, and bassist Christian McBride, as his "one-time-only dream band." Anchoring it all, moreover, is the grand elder statesman Billy Higgins on drums. In honor of this talented company, or maybe because of it, Scofield returns to the straight-ahead swing style (albeit with a few trademark funky episodes), that he has periodically pursued throughout his career. What works about WORKS is the expert meshing of the quintet, a combination of the talents of Scofield and his younger sidemen and Higgins's lush, unifying swing. The music is fresh and vibrant; each piece, be it ballad, bop, or blues, bristles with energy. Choice cuts include the crackling "Not You Again," the darker ballad "Love You Long Time," and the fittingly titled "Do I Crazy?" SKU: 1054509

Hope
Palace Songs: Will "Push" Oldham (vocals, guitar, bass); Liam Hayes (electric guitar, piano, organ); Sean O'Hagan (piano, background vocals); Rian Murphy (drums, background vocals); Rob Allum (drums); Briana Corrigan (background vocals). Producers include: Rian Murphy. Engineers: Konrad Strauss, Reza Ebrahimi, Charlie Francis. Recorded in Chicago, Illinois and London, England. 1994 was a productive year for the Palace camp, with the release of an excellent sophomore effort (DAYS IN THE WAKE) and two strong EPs (the import AN ARROW THROUGH THE BITCH and the domestic HOPE) that exist at opposite ends of the Palace spectrum. Where ARROW contains dark, weird songs full of death imagery and strange sounds, HOPE is the sprightliest and most sunny of all Will Oldham'srecordings. The sound is filled out considerably by piano and organ (courtesy of High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan among others), and the overall tone more upbeat, even when things inevitably turn introspective. An effective cover of the pretty, romantic Leonard Cohen ballad "Winter Lady" indicates the direction of HOPE. The lyrics are often full of the loopy non-sequitirs that were becoming a large part of Oldham's modus operandi. HOPE is an effective marriage of off-kilter romance and lo-fi folk-rock. SKU: 1061480

Threesome Vol.1 (Freak Out/Absolutely Free/We're Only In It For The Money)
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention THREESOME NO. 1 is a boxset containing the first three Mothers Of Invention records; FREAK OUT! (1966), ABSOLUTELY FREE (1967) and WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY (1967). The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa, Ray Collins, Jimmy Carl Black, Roy Estrada, Billy Mundi, Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Motorhead Sherwood. This three-disc set and its companion volume THREESOME NO. 2 distill Frank Zappa's enormous catalog to some of its most essential titles. Nicely packaged in a slipcase, the three albums which appear in their entirety are FREAK OUT!, ABSOLUTELY FREE, and WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY. Released during 1966-1968, this trio effectively toppled the applecart of current conventions, sending pointed barbsout in the then-expected direction of "the establishment," but, more importantly, also exposing the hypocrisies and smoke-and-mirrors of the counterculture/hippie realm. Heard throughout these albums are strains of doo-wop, L.A. soul, post-bop jazz grooves, 20th Century classical experimentation, and rock & roll ditties. Zappa was a synthesizer of varied musical forms (making it little surprise that he devoted much of his later time to using actual synthesizers for all or part of his compositional and performance processes). 8:30 (Live)
Weather Report: Joe Zawinul (keyboards, synthesizer, bass, vocoder); Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophone); Jaco Pastorius (bass, drums); Peter Erskine (drums, percussion); Erich Zawinul (percussion). Additional personnel: Ten members of the West Los Angeles Christian Academy Children's Choir. Reissue producer: John Snyder. Recorded live in January and February, 1979. Includes liner notes by Scott H. Thompson. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios). This is part of the Columbia Jazz Contemporary Masters series. Due to the standard length of all compact discs, "Scarlet Woman" has been ommitted from the Columbia/Legacy re-issue of 8:30 in order to accommodate the CD format. You think these cool fusion cats rewrote the jazz/rock songbook on record? Well, live, in person, and on a friendly stage, Weather Report easily smote the light fantastic, sang the body electric, and traveled mysteriously through lands brazen and bruised. 8:30 captures Zawinul, Shorter, et al, in absolutely stellar form, wringing yet more visceral energy from a good portion of their first five albums. They extend the already meaty compositional density of songs to include a variety of kaleidoscopic solos and wondrous incidental occurrences. Zawinul's keyboards are nothing short of electrifying. The synergy between him and Shorter harnesses the gut-level intensity of rock music and plugs it into jazz's vast improvisational resources. Weather Report's electronic iridescence teeters on the brink of joyful cacophony. Linear tensions are set up between Shorter's volcanic sax and Don Alias' galvanizing rhythm section, as Zawinul's multi-hued synthesizers color the surroundings in a lambent haze of pan-cultural sizzle. Note: the Japanese import of 8:30 reproduces the original double LP in its entirety, while the single-disc domesticrelease omits one track. SKU: 1014139

And Then
Personnel: Joe (vocals); G-Unit (rap vocals); Frank Romano, Ivan Barias (various instruments); Donnie Lyle (guitar, mandolin); Roy Bartell (guitar); Jon Denney (Fender Rhodes piano); Perry Carta, Kendall Nesbitt, Antonio Dixon, Rodney East, Johnnie "Smurf" Smith (keyboards); Darrell Robinson (drums); Henry Love (congas); Abel Garibaldi, Ian Mereness (programming);Chyna Royal, Jay Shawn, Eric Dawkins (background vocals). Producers include: Roy Hamilton, R. Kelly, Frankie Romano, Ivan Barias, Carvin Haggins. It's difficult to imagine a better musical backdrop to a romantic encounter than this collection of luxuriously seductive cuts from a singer fast rising to the top of the pile of R&B mack daddies. AND THEN follows in the footsteps of previous Joe concoctions in paying slavish attention to every facet of bedroom fantasy, from the title track's erotically breathy vocal hooks to the inventively sexy laundry list of possibilities on "Bedroom." Aided by sensual electric piano, persuasively plangent guitar, and achingly slow tempos, Joe has the insinuatingly pleading vocal chops to carry the album's suavely passionate conceits. The sophisticated production, courtesy of such talents as R. Kelly, himself a veteran of somewhat more controversial boudoir shenanigans, supplies the satin-smooth background. SKU: 6540965

Leadbelly Legacy Vol.1 (Where Did You Sleep Last Night)
WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT? is, in part, a reissue of the first two volumes (Folkways 2004 and 2014) of the four-volume set LEADBELLY'S LEGACY, originally released on 10-inch LPs in the early 1950s. WHERE DID YOU SLEEP uses different versions of some of the songs, and adds outtakes and previously-unreleased recordings. Personnel includes: Leadbelly (vocals, guitar, button accordion, piano); Brownie McGhee (guitar); Sonny Terry (harmonica); Willie "The Lion" Smith (piano); Pops Foster (bass). The Oleander Quartet: George Boyd, Cecil Murray, Howard Scott, George Hall (vocals). Compilation producers: Jeff Place, Anthony Seeger, Matt Walters, Pete Reiniger. Principally recorded at Asch Recording Studios, New York, New York between 1941 and 1947. Includes liner notes and song-by-song annotations by Jeff Place. This fine 34-track compilation, collected from sessions produced by Folkways founder Moses Asch and featuring cameos from Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, is a strong compilation of some of Leadbelly's finest recordings. For those confused by the album's name, the titular composition--one of Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter's most haunting and celebrated works--is included here under its original name "In the Pines." Leadbelly classics like "Cotton Fields" and an early version of "Goodnight Irene" sit beside traditional folk standards like "Pick a Bale of Cotton" and "Grey Goose" and hard blues like "Moanin'," showcasing Leadbelly's remarkable versatility. However, it's the surprise inclusion of five outstanding previously unreleased songs, including a fairly obscure variant of "House of the Rising Sun" called "New Orleans Blues," that makes this compilationessential to Leadbelly fans. As always with Folkways reissues, the sound is excellent. SKU: 1013900

Afterlife (Live)
Personnel: Joe jackson (vocals, melodica, keyboards); Gary Sanford (guitar, background vocals); Graham Maby (bass, background vocals); Dave Houghton (drums, background vocals). Recorded live at The Fillmore, San Francisco,California; House Of Blues, Los Angeles, California; House Of Blues, Anaheim, California; 4th And B, San Diego, California in 2003. In 2003, more than two decades after disbanding, the original Joe Jackson Band reunited for a new album and tour, to longtime fans' unending delight. The reggae-influenced, bass-driven band did much to popularize "new wave" in the late 1970s, and after 20-plus years of Jackson dabbling with everything from jump blues to neo-classical orchestrations, the vibrant rock energy of Gary Sanford, Graham Maby, and Dave Houghton is a breath of fresh air. The band puts as much into the songs from the new album as it does into the classics, but unsurprisingly it's those late-'70s rockers that elicit the most emphatic audience response. To hear these hardy rock & roll vets lay into the breathless, punky "Got the Time" or the Kinks-meet-ska archness of "Sunday Papers" with the vigor of young men is to believe in rock as the fountain of youth. Maladroit [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Weezer includes: Rivers Cuomo, Pat Wilson, Brian Bell, Scott Shriner. Producers include: Weezer,Chad Bamford, Rod Cervera. Engineers include: Chad Bamford, Chris Carroll, Carlos "Loco" Bedova. Recorded at Cello Studios, Los Angeles, California in December 2001. Weezer has been having it both ways for some time; churning out barn-burning alt-rock riffs while maintaining a degree of ironic distance via their nerdy image and quirky twists and turns. Don't be fooled by the geek garb, though, head Weezer Rivers Cuomo is the kind of guy who could raid your refrigerator and steal your girlfriend without ever removing his horn-rimmed glasses. MALADROIT finds Cuomo and his post-modern pals continuing to walk that tricky tightrope between rock and "rock." Whether you believe they mean it or not, the visceral pleasures of the chugging "Dope Nose," the Gary Glitter rivalry of "Keep Fishin'," and the white-boy R&B of "Burndt Jamb" are easy to assimilate. And the first pressing comes with the bonus of seven video clips, so what are you waiting for? Put down that pocket protector, slap on your Doc Martens, and go get MALADROIT. SKU: 1072455

Seven [Remastered]
Personnel: Tim Booth (vocals); Saul Davies(guitar, violin, percussion); Larry Gott (guitar); Andy Diagram (trumpet); Mark Hunter (keyboards); Jim Glennie (bass); Dave Baynton-Power (drums). With SEVEN, James, with the help of producers Youth and Steve "Barney" Chase, finally hit their recorded stride. Arguably one of the UK's most exciting live acts, the Manchester group produced some of the great British pop of the '90s. For a guy who started out in the band as a dancer, the shamanic Tim Booth has a great vocal range, which he uses to full effect here. Never a band to pass up a singalong chorus or the occasional "Mama wooo!" James' beguiling songs are eminently catchy. Diving in with the danceable "Born of Frustration," other standout tracks include the antiwar "Mother," the ode to a beautiful film star "Next Lover," and the spiritual "Heavens." You don't need a shrink or an exorcist--an hour with James will sooth the most troubled soul. SKU: 1068987
