Set This Circus Down
Personnel includes: Tim McGraw (vocals); Biff Watson, Larry Byron (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason, B. James Lowry, Michael Landau (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Aubrey Haynie (fiddle); The Nashville String Machine (strings); Steve Nathan, Jeff Babko (keyboards); Glenn Worf (bass); Lonnie Wislon, Peter R. Thomas (drums); Chris Rodriguez, Gene Miller, Curtis Young, Faith Hill (background vocals). Producers: Byron Gallimore, James Stroud, Tim McGraw. Engineers include: Julian KIng, Ricky Cobble, Samie Barela. SET THIS CIRCUS DOWN was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Grown Men Don't Cry" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Don't hate Tim McGraw because he's marriedto one of the most glamorous women in contemporary country music (Faith Hill). Don't hate him because he wears a ten-gallon hat and sings about "The Cowboy In Me" while utilizing more image consultants than a Vogue fashion shoot. Hate him because he's so damn good at what he does. Whether you're an old-school country traditionalist or a card-carrying McGraw disciple, you can't deny the seamless production, hook-filled songcraft, and flawless vocal and instrumental performances that make up SET THIS CIRCUS DOWN. As on previous efforts, McGraw amiably combines country convention with pop-rock production. From the widescreen nostalgia of "Telluride" to the acoustic guitar-based ballad "Angry all the Time," CIRCUS handily picks up where 1999's A PLACE IN THE SUN left off. If you're overtaken by one of these songs on your car radio one day, we dare you not to sing along. SKU: 1060304

Best Of Kool & The Gang 1969-1976, The
Kool & The Gang: Robert "Kool" Bell (vocals, bass); Amir Abdul-Salaam Bayyan (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Charles Smith (vocals, guitar); Khalis "Ronald Bell" Bayyan (vocals, flute, soprano & tenor saxophones, keyboards, percussion); Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas (vocals, flute, alto saxophone); Robert "Spike" Mikens (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion); Larry Gittens (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn); Clifford Adams (vocals, trombone); Ricky "Richard Westfield" West, Caldwell MacMillan, Kevin "Ice" Lassiter (vocals, keyboards); George "Funky George" Brown (vocals, drums, precussion); Donal Boyce (vocals, sound effects); Woodrow "Woody" Sparrow (guitar); Otha Nash (trombone). Producer: Kool & The Gang. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Recorded between 1969 and 1976. Includes liner notes by Cleveland Brown. THE BEST OF KOOL & THE GANG, 1969-1976 cullshighlights from the band's creatively rich, pre-"Celebration" years. Given the album's concentration of intricate horn melodies and catchy synth lines, it's hardly surprise that 1969-1976 occasionally plays like an encyclopedia of contemporary hip-hop samples. The party whistle that sounds just seconds into the opening "Funky Stuff" sets a celebratory tone that rarely lets up during the 74 minutes that follow. The 1976 B-side "Open Sesame, Pt. 2" is rife with frenetic horn colorings. On "Who's Gonna Take the Weight, Pts. 1 & 2," a short sample of crowd noise played in a loop throughout the song gives the track a carnival-esque feel. "Kool It (Here Comes the Fuzz)" is another studio track that features ersatz crowd noise, and the effect only adds to the festivities. The cooled-out and synthesizer-rich "Summer Madness" and the deeply grooved "N.T., Pts. 1 & 2" are downright infectious. Also included is the classic "Jungle Boogie," a song given new life as part of the PULP FICTION soundtrack. This essential collection makes clear how Kool & the Gang left its indelible imprint on the spirit of the boogie. SKU: 1013931

Small Town Romance
Solo performer: Richard Thompson (vocals, acoustic guitar). Engineers: David Vanderheyden, Ilana Pelzig, Edward Haber. Recorded live at The Bottom Line, New York, New York on January 8, 1982 and Folk City, New York, New York on September 29 & 30, 1982. Thompson had recently split up with his wife/singing partner Linda and was busy redefining himself as a solo performer when SMALL TOWN ROMANCE was recorded in 1982. These solo acoustic performances, captured at two legendary NYC folk-friendly venues (Folk City and the Bottom Line), lay bare the basic ingredients of Thompson's instrumental and compositional genius. SMALL TOWN ROMANCE contains mostly tunes from the Richard & Linda days, but our boy's solo takes on tunes like "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" and "A Heart Needs a Home" are satisfyingly poignant and assured. The tragically romantic title tune and the catchy, clever "Love is Bad for Business" point the way towards Thompson's future, though they curiously neverfound a home on a proper studio album. Period Of Transition, A
This issue of A PERIOD OF TRANSITION has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes. Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Mac Rebennack (guitar, keyboards); Marlo Henderson (guitar); Jerry Jumonville (alto & tenor saxophones); Joel Peskin (baritone saxophone); Mark Underwood (trumpet); Ollie E. Brown (drums, percussion); Robbie Montgomery, Roger Kenerly-Saint, Gregory Wright, Carlena Williams, Paulette Parker, Candy Nash, Toni McVey, Gary Garrett, Joe Powell (background vocals). Not that there was much competition, but with this album, Morrison made a convincing case for his being the Irish Al Green. The classic Memphis soul sound he adopts here is a logical extension of the R&B roots he had expanded on since the beginning of his career. Helped out here by Dr. John, he presents a group of songs that are among his most visceral and immediate. Miles from the dreamy minstrelsy of VEEDON FLEECE, this recording is based around solid, propulsive R&B grooves that lay an undeniable claim to dancing feet while the lyrics still address the kind of spiritual concerns that have become a Morrison trademark. Van at his funkiest. SKU: 6358739

Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory (Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - Original Video Game Soundtrack)
AcclaimedBrazilian electronic producer Tobin has composed the soundtrack to the third in the Splinter Cell video game series created by author Tom Clancy. With a budget more in keeping with a feature film, Tobin has recruited some giants of the 70s movie soundtrack scene to bring a live edge to his trademark dense, dark, claustrophobic, polyrhythmic funk. The result has drawn comparisons with the work of the Italian band Goblin for the films of Dario Argento. SKU: 6573440

Danny The Dog (Original Soundtrack)
Massive Attack's brooding, atmospheric trip-hop has always had a cinematic quality, so it is no surprise they were tapped by director Louis Leterrier to compose the score for his film DANNY THE DOG. The soundtrack is strictly instrumental, and while longtime fans may miss the group's vocals, the variety and depth of the music more than compensates for this. Unlike the of-a-piece mood of albums like MEZZANINE, DANNY THE DOG is a varied stylistic collage that references techno, industrial, dub, ambient, and film music. Cuts like the piano-and-strings duet on "You've Never Had a Dream" or the pulsing, eerie "Opening Title" are sweeping and evocative, perfectly suited to accompanying images on the big screen. The mood veers from delicate and melancholic (the music-box melody of "Two Rocks and a Cup of Water") to aggressive and mesmerizing ("The Dog Obeys," the skittery house rhythms in "Atta Boy"). The musical palette is so broad here, in fact, there is little that recalls the band's earliest work (except perhaps the deep, floating groove of "Polaroid Girl"). DANNY THE DOG may be Massive Attack's most ambitious and intriguing effort,in its dynamic range, coloring, and compelling blend of electronica and film music. SKU: 6576843

Lonely Runs Both Ways
Full performer name: Alison Krauss And Union Station. Alison Krauss And Union Station: Ron Block (vocals, guitar, banjo); Dan Tyminski (vocals, guitar); Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle, viola); Jerry Douglas (lap steel guitar, dobro); Barry Bales (bass instrument, background vocals). Producer: Alison Krauss And Union Station. In a world where popular country music has lost much of its roots, Alison Krauss stands out among the pack because she remains true to the bluegrass traditions of Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt, and others. However, more than just a revivalist, Krauss also has an unerring ear for elegant pop music. LONELY RUNS BOTH WAYS features, essentially, two types of music--burning-hot bluegrass compositions and delicate, heartrending country ballads. On the latter, Krauss's gossamer voice sears with deep emotion and lyrical clarity. For example, the last song on the album, "A Living Prayer," is a gospel lullaby featuring Krauss belting out long, legato notes over austere acoustic guitar accompaniment. In contrast, the instrumental piece "Unionhouse Branch" explores traditional Americana. Each Union Station member is featured on this track, and the level of technical skill displayed by these musicians (particularly by dobro player Jerry Douglas) is truly astounding. In many ways, this band represents a pinnacle in modern bluegrass. As for Krauss, her fiddle playing is understated on this release, but her beautifully penetrating voice more than makes up for it. Breezin' [Remastered]
Personnel: George Benson (vocals, guitar); Jorge Dalto (acoustic & electric pianos, Clavinet); Ronnie Foster (electric piano, Minimoog synthesizer); Phil Upchurch (guitar, bass); Stanley Banks (bass); Harvey Mason (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion). Producer: Tommy LiPuma. Reissue producers: David McLees, Patrick Milligan. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California from January 6-8, 1976. Includes liner notes by Al Young and A. Scott Galloway. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot. Benson earned his reputation as a superior jazz guitarist through his partnership with soul/jazz organist Brother Jack McDuff.Several solo albums for the CTI label ensued before a switch to the giant Warner Brothers resulted in extraordinary chart success with this release. Benson's remake of the title track, originally a hit for fellow guitarist Gabor Szabo, set the tone for the entire set wherein mellifluous funk underscores the artist's sweet voice and soft-touch technique. Like Nat 'King' Cole before him, Benson left jazz to court a wider audience and with Breezin' he did so with considerable aplomb. SKU: 1053035

Big Star Live
Big Star: Alex Chilton (vocals, guitar); Jody Stephens (vocals, drums); John Lightman (bass). Recorded at Ultrasonic Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Robert Gordon. A previously unreleased concert originally broadcast on WLIR (Long Island, NY) in the mid-70s. The CD was assembled from the original master tape. Big Star formed and unraveled in the first half of the seventies. An enduring legacy of three studio albums (#1 RECORD, RADIO CITY and SISTER LOVERS/3RD) has left its mark on a slew of bands who fell under the spell oftheir initially commercially unsuccessful releases. LIVE finds the trio with their new bass player playing a radio broadcast in a studio in New York City. Released nearly two decades after it was recorded, this is a rough and tumble set in every regard--the mood of the band, their playing and the earnest attempt by the engineer to achieve and maintain a reasonable sound mix. Opening with what may be their most well known song, "September Gurls," the set is prototypical Alex Chilton, replete with soulful phrasing filtered through a depressed sort of hallucinogenic abandon. He also had the good taste to cover Loudon Wainwright's "Motel Blues." This wouldn't be the album to start exploring this band with, but it does fill in the cracks between their other releases quite nicely. SKU: 1008415

No Exit
Blondie: Deborah Harry (vocals); Chris Stein (guitar); Jimmy Destri (keyboards); Clem Burke (drums). Additional personnel: Coolio (rap); Paul Carbonara (guitar); Helen Hooke (violin); Robert Aaron (flute, tenor & baritone saxophones); James Chance, Dave Ironside, Candy Dulfer (saxophone); Rick Davies (trombone); Ken Fradley (trumpet); Leigh Foxx (bass); Frank Pagano (percussion); Rick Simpson (drum programming); Donna Destri, Cassell Webb, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Nancy West, Theo, Romy Ashby. Recorded at Red Night Recording,Electric Lady Studios, Chung King House Of Metal, New York, New York. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. After a 17-year recording layoff, one might assume the members of Blondie would be a bit rusty. This is not the case on NO EXIT, the band's seventh album of new material. Four of the original five members are intact, and time seems to have only improved the Blondie sound. "Maria" is perfect pop, an infectious radio-friendly single. "Forgive AndForget" has jungle drums and electronic rhythms primed for the '90s dance market. The title track has Debbie Harry trading raps with Coolio; ironic, considering it was Harry who helped propel rap into the top 40 in the early '80s. The diversity of musical styles gives the album a widespread appeal. Rap, ska, dance, jazz, rock, country and African genres are all represented. Although the band helped pioneer the new wave movement along with The Cars, B-52's and Talking Heads, they have always resisted categorization. Blondie is back, and NO EXIT delivers in a big way, showing a vigor not seen since the group's early days. SKU: 1063436
