HAPPY END OF THE WORLD is Pizzicato Five's first "real" U.S. album. The group's two previous U.S. releases, MADE IN USA and THE SOUND OF MUSIC, sampled nearly ten years' worth of albums that had been released in the band's native Japan. Luckily, HAPPY END OF THE WORLD is as filler-free as the two compilations. "The World Is Spinning at 45 RPM" and the cheerleader-driven "It's a Beautiful Day" are classic P5: frothy girl-group bubblegum with Maki Nomiya's irresistible vocals skipping over Yasuharu Konishi's sample-mad layers of keyboards; strings; Japanese and English sound bites; and alternating trip-hop, samba, and hyperactive pop beats. Other tracks, like the self-explanatory "Porno 3003," mine Konishi's long-standing fascination with '50s and '60s movie soundtracks. He's back again. With help from such luminaries as Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot, Method Man, and none other than the venerable but no less crazy George Clinton on the Parliament-influenced hip-hop shopping list of "J.U.M.P." Redman takes us all on yet another frantic excursion through steel-rimmed beats, spare backing tracks, and most of all, his irrepressible rhyming sensibilities.
Redman's first outing since DOC'S THE NAME is heavier in subject matter than that skit-filled collection. From the cheerful Cockney chappie (!) intro of "Roller Coaster," where the ride betrays a suspicious similarity to a prison lockdown, to the grainy "Real Niggaz," the erstwhile Reggie Noble heads for the hip-hop jugular with a set of hard rhymes guaranteed to move all but the most dyed-in-the-wool hip-hop haters.

Part '60s rave-up, part space-age bachelor pad music, part compendium ofall the TV themes you've ever heard--yes, it's a Danny Elfman score, with added big-budget orchestration and a generous helping of swooping John Williams-type strings for good measure. Elfman's ingenious combination of schlock pop smarts and genuflections at the altar of Bernard Herrmann makes for an absorbing listen--it's likely that one day he'll be enshrined along with the master--and also works as a stand-alone piece. His gamelan-type voicings on "Customs" are a delight and it's always a pleasure to see how he develops a very basic theme, worrying and tearing at it until it's transformed into--well, a seamless movie score. Elfman was obviously born to make this type of music. He's by turns innovative and traditional, never ponderous or overblown, yet keeps his innate goofiness in check enough to make the original soundtrack to MEN IN BLACK II a consistently absorbing listen.

An illustrious line-up of musicians, including guitarist Rey Guerra and percussionist Emilio Del Monte Jr., joins thetalented, if culturally dissimilar duo for what is a truly touching cycle.
HAVANA MIDNIGHT, containing both wistful impressions of Cuban life and reflections on Neuwirth's years as a wandering folkie, has an alluringly melancholic feel to it. The title track and its companion "Havana Farewell" evoke a sultry island atmosphere (" velvet wind soft as sin against the skin") while "The Call" contrastingly recalls "all the halls we played, all the scenes we stole, all the hell we raised." Neuwirth's weather-beaten drawl is perfectly complemented by Vitier's Hispanic roots and at times, as on the optimistic "Look Up," the interplay between voice and piano is absolutely sublime.

As the offspring of 1960s California pop royalty (Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Mamas & Papas' John and Michelle Phillips), female vocal trio Wilson Phillips seems uniquely qualified to turn out a comeback album (after 12 years of silence) featuring covers of L.A.-centric hits from the '60s and '70s. Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" is ripe for revival, and here it gets a bit of a pumped-up Britney Spears-style treatment. Neil Young's "Old Man" is also the recipient of techno-friendly modernization. The trio's take on the Eagles' "Already Gone" sounds like a natural fit for contemporary-country radio.
Unsurprisingly, the most faithful renditions are the strongest--Joni Mitchell's title cut and the Youngbloods' pacific anthem "Get Together." The girls dig into the catalogs oftheir parents too, for a "Monday, Monday" that owes more to Sheryl Crow than to the Mamas & the Papas, and a zesty romp through the Beach Boys' "Dance, Dance, Dance." The most affecting moment on CALIFORNIA, though, is the closing track, where Brian Wilson joins his daughters and their pal for a piano-and-vocal version of his classic "In My Room."

Once the orange-haired Lauper dropped the contrived, dumb, cutesy, lispy broad persona, Cyndi Lauper was seen as a credible artist, and has subsequently become highly respected as a terrific songwriter. On this, her pen was sharpened with the magnificent song of unconditional love, "Time After Time," a track that has sincebeen recorded by others, including beautiful cover versions by Miles Davis and the jazz husband-and-wife duo, Tuck And Patti. Less sophisticated, but of equal fun, is "She Bop," and then there are well-chosen covers such as Jules Shear's "All Through The Night" and Prince's "When You Were Mine."

AFFECTION is a hit-packed album from one of the pioneering club divas of the early '90s. Lisa Stansfield's "All Around the World" was one of the biggest songs of the era, and became a chart-topper in numerous countries. Arguably one of the finest British pop albums of the '80s, 1984's RATTLESNAKES is the brilliant debut of one of the finest singer-songwriters of the decade. Coming right at apoint when synth-pop's domination of the UK charts was ending and a new breed of guitar-based pop bands led by the Smiths and Aztec Camera were the new British wave, RATTLESNAKES had the force of a major new work, and still holds up better than most of its contemporaries.
Cole's literate--at times self-consciously so--lyrics, and chiming, folk-rocky tunes are outstanding, and his terrific voice and lead guitarist Neil Clark's exceptional instrumental work put over the songs brilliantly. Fully half of these songs, including the Dylanesque "Perfect Skin" and the moody, romantic "Forest Fire," with Clark's remarkable ending solo, are all-time Britpop classics. Cole would do standout work after this, but RATTLESNAKES is simply perfect.

With their stunning craftsmanship and a classic sound DEEPLY rooted in whistlestop America, the anthems and rural overtones which distinguish the songs on AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER evoke the same kind of visceral reaction which once greeted The Band. But AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER is not an exercise in nostalgia.
Some listeners have reacted to vocalist Adam Duritz's gruff, ecstatic vocals in the way they once responded to such dark angels of revelation and regret as Van Morrison and Michael Stipe. On "Time And Time Again," Duritz conjures up a startling sense of longing and loneliness, as the listener is drawn in and consumed by a spooky sense of space and solitude.
Credit must go to producer T-Bone Burnett, who has gotten a lot of mileage out of similar themes and sounds. He frames Duritz's fervent vocals in Charlie Gillingham's mysterious keyboards and David Bryson's supple guitar, to particular effect on "Sullivan Street," where Maria McKee's harmonies give the tune a forlorn country resonance. All in all, there's a tactile, spiritual air to Counting Crows' tunes, as if by losing yourself in their lyric loneliness, by boardingtheir "Ghost Train," you could lose your own isolation.

DIVER DOWN was a #3 smash for Van Halen in 1982. The band scored its biggest hit up to that point with "(Oh) Pretty Woman," and were to begin its "Hide Your Sheep" tour by headlining the US festival. Although criticized for containing nearly50 percent cover material, DIVER propelled the group into the rock stratosphere.
"Where Have All The Good Times Gone" actually exceeds the Kinks' original, using the same formula that worked with "You Really Got Me." "Hang 'Em High" contains a blistering Eddie Van Halen solo, while the somber instrumental "Cathedral" shows Ed's use of digital delay and electric guitar volume swells to create a synthesizer-like sound. On "Dancing In The Street" the band tries to stay true to the vibe of the original tune while still injecting the Van Halen sound. The flamenco-style intro of "Little Guitars" leads into another distinct, innovative Eddie guitar line. The album concludes on a humorous note with "Happy Trails." Great songs, David Lee Roth's charismatic vocals, and Eddie's virtuoso guitar are just some of the reasons to pick up DIVER DOWN.

Dolly Parton's RCA Victor debut, coming after a couple of years recording for Nashville indie Monument Records, 1968's JUST BECAUSE I'M A WOMAN is several steps above the average country record of the period. Overseen by Parton's mentor Porter Wagoner, who co-produced with Bob Ferguson, the arrangements are largely free of the then-pervasive "countrypolitan" sound, eschewing the usual orchestras and choirs for a rootsy honky-tonk sound that better suits both the material and Parton's voice.
As was often the case in Parton's early career, she wrote all of the album's best material, including the defiant title track and "The Bridge," a gothic murder ballad that establishes Parton's familiarity with the traditional folk music of her Eastern Tennessee childhood. Other highlights include the winningly silly "I'll Oil Wells Love You," a clever song about gold-digging, and the gently self-mocking "False Eyelashes." This reissue includes two bonus tracks, 1968 live performances of the title track and the then-unrecorded "Coat of Many Colors."

In 2003, Evanescence scored a surprise hit with FALLEN by combining an intensely heavy, nu-metal sound with old-school goth visual/lyrical elements, and the quasi-operatic vocals of lead singer Amy Lee. The CD/DVD set ANYWHERE BUT HOME documents the band's non-stop touring schedule with in-concert takes on nine of FALLEN's 10 songs. In addition, the release includes a soaring, piano-based cover of Korn's2002 hit "Thoughtless," and "Missing," a newly recorded studio effort that features moody vocals, dance beats, and a glockenspiel. Most tracks stick fairly close to their studio counterparts, but benefit from the added bombast, drama, and crowd interaction that a live recording affords. Of course, as on Evanescence's debut, the main attraction is Lee's voice, which is in fine form here--the singer belts out every word to the wildly enthusiastic Paris, France crowd with a mix of alt-rock melancholy and hard-rock power.

On this 1957 date, Webster is teamed up with the great Oscar Peterson Quartet. Supporting Webster on each track, this music lays "in the pocket" (as musicians would say) quite well. Much of this is due to drummer Stan Levey's buoyant swing. Webster himself is heard on two simple blues numbers of his own penning including the title track and "Late Date." Other songs include the standards "Lover Come Back To Me," "Where Are You," and "Makin' Whoopee." Perhaps the most riveting tune on SOULVILLE, however, is the beautiful ballad "Time on My Hands."
Indeed, Webster is one of the most brilliant instrumental balladeersjazz has ever produced. No one can get that airy (even sultry) tone quite like Webster. Finally, as an intriguing bonus, we hear Webster perform three tunes in duet with Levey. Intriguingly, Webster plays piano on these tracks! Using an antiquated stride/boogie woogie style, Webster shows that his talent reaches beyond the saxophone.
