30 Seconds To Mars [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. 30 Seconds To Mars: Jared Leto (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, bass, programming); Shannon Leto (vocals, drums); Solon Bixler (guitar, synthesizer, programming). Producers: 30 Seconds To Mars, Brian Virtue, Bob Ezrin. Principally recorded at Cherokee, Sunset Sound Studios, LosAngeles, California. Though the band goes to every possible length to obscure it, full disclosure demands mentioning the fact that 30 Seconds To Mars is led by actor Jared Leto, known for such films as PANIC ROOM and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, and twice named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People." That said, charges of dilettantism would seem entirely out of order here, as all four members of the group seem entirely committed to their hard-edged sound. Stylistically, though the band itself cites such influences as Pink Floyd (whose latter-day producer Bob Ezrin is at work here) and the Cure, the more obvious reference points are Nine Inch Nails and perhaps Tool. Thick layers of aggressive guitar and booming drums alternate with dark, moody, synth-laced passages while Leto's vocals range from full-on roar to feral growl. SKU: 1075890

Run For The Roses (Remastered & Expanded)
This 2005 reissue includes six previously unreleased tracks. Personnel include: Jerry Garcia (vocals, guitar); John Kahn (guitar, slide guitar, piano, synthesizer, bass guitar, fretless bass); Dan Healy (guitar); Roger Neuman (trumpet); Jimmy Warren (piano, electric piano, Clavinet); Merle Saunders (electric piano, Clavinet, organ); Michael Omartian (Clavinet); Melvin Seals (organ); Ron Tutt (drums, tambourine); Johnny D'Foncesca (drums); Essra Mohawk (background vocals). Recording information: Club Front, San Rafael, California (09/1981 - 12/1981). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Jerry Garcia's first solo album in overfour years and the final studio release featuring the classic lineup of the Jerry Garcia Band, 1982's RUN FOR THE ROSES was the initial indication that Garcia was struggling to find his way out of the drugs and depression that had left the Grateful Dead so inert for the preceding few years. The gently loping title track, a Robert Hunter lyric built on the interplay between Garcia's guitar and weary, bluesy vocals and Melvin Seals's soulful organ fills, is one of the highlights of Garcia's entire extracurricular musical career. Another standout track is the heartfelt, country-tinged cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," which would go on to become a favorite Garcia cover. Although the Dead would not fully break out of their creative rut until 1987's IN THE DARK, the defiantly old-school, mellow, and rootsy RUN FOR THE ROSES shows that even in a personal slump, Garcia was still capable of greatness. Tiny Deaths
Third full-length album from Russian avant-garde black metal outfit and their second for Earache's experimental Elitist imprint, following 2000's 'Planeshift'. Trimming back the the folk leanings which characterized that album, 'Tiny Deaths' focuses more on the experimental side of their synth-heavy sound. Their decidedly non-metal approach has seen them compared to the likes of Godspeed You BlackEmperor and Current 93. SKU: 1085053

Pawn Shoppe Heart
The Von Bondies: Jason Stollsteimer (vocals, guitar); Carrie Smith (vocals, bass); Marcie Bolen (guitar, background vocals); Carrie Smith (vocals, Don Blum (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Sausalito, Sound, The Plant, Studio D, Sausalito, California; Ghetto Recorders, Detroit, Michigan. Before this, their major label debut, Detroit rockers the Von Bondies were best known to those outside the garage-rock cognoscenti for being produced/mentored by Jack White of the White Stripes, and subsequently for White beating the tar out of singer JasonStollsteimer in an unexplained confrontation. With former Talking Head Jerry Harrison stepping into the producer chair, the Von Bondies sound set to transcend all that and climb to the top of the neo-garage heap. There are undeniable similarities to the White Stripes in the raw, unhinged rock & roll madness of the Von Bondies, but that's strictly a peer-to-peer relationship. PAWN SHOPPE HEART owes little to anything but Stollsteimer's angst-ridden wail, the thunderous guitar racket of Stollsteimer and Marcie Bolen, and the manic drive of the rhythm section. Even in a garage-rock context, the only overtly retro track is the NUGGETS-like, 1960s-sounding "Tell Me What You See." The hidden track at the album's end, a Screamin' Jay Hawkins-style version of Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness," shows the band's sense of both humor and history. Take that, Jack White. Creatures Of The Night
Kiss: Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Ace Frehley (guitar); Eric Carr (drums). Additional personnel: Vinnie Vincent (guitar). Producers: Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Michael James Jackson. Recorded at The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. Includesliner notes by Robert Conte. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio. On the heels of the unusual MUSIC FROM THE ELDER, Kiss decided to return to their hard rock roots with CREATURES and the result is their heaviest-sounding album to date. Unfortunately, Ace Frehley (frustrated by his diminishing role in the group) departed the band prior to recording. He was replaced by Vinnie Vincent, who contributed some lightning-fast riffs. From the monstrous drum fill that opens the record, it is clear that the grease painted warriors mean business. The title track is a classic Kiss number with a "take no prisoners" punch. "Rock And Roll Hell" is a tale of a musician's excessive lifestyle (loosely based on Frehley). "I Love It Loud" is a Kiss anthem for the ages, with a pounding drumbeat and a sing-along chorus that had 200,000 Brazilians screaming in unison on the CREATURES tour. "I Still Love You" is a powerful, emotional ballad featuring Eric Carr on bass. "War Machine" closes the album and is Gene Simmons at his ferocious best, a killer track that leaves the listener spent at its completion. CREATURES shows a focused Kiss, a straight-up hard rock record that takes the listener through a riveting journey. SKU: 1070647

Trailer Park
Personnel includes: Beth Orton (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Ted Barnes (acoustic & electric guitars, guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, harmonium, bass); Andrew Hackett (electric guitar); Keith Tenniswood (guitar, keyboards); Sean Kilbride (dulcimer); Becki Doe, Lucy Wilkins, Howard Gott, Nia Bevan (violin); Rob Spriggs, Becca Ware (viola); Oliver Kraus, Sara Wilson (cello); David Boulter (harmonium, Hammond organ); Sean Reed (piano, Hammond organ); Lee Spencer (keyboards); Ali Friend (bass); Will Blanchard (drums); Tasha Lee McCluney (background vocals). Engineers: Gideon Schaltman, Toby Bush, Keith Tenniswood. TRAILER PARK, the debut album by British songstress Beth Orton, is a swirling voyage that soars beyond the sonic limitations that are the Achilles heel of singer/songwriters. Recorded with producer Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, Tindersticks), TRAILER PARK's lush, sinewy string arrangements, imaginative sound effects, and tasteful accompaniment contribute a complexity that lifts, rather than smothers, the stark, up-front vocals and breezy, melodic guitar playing. Somehow, the busier things get, the more room she seems to have. Orton's lyrics are just introspective and plaintive enough--she neither pleads nor lectures. Overallher message is wistful beyond her years, and sad without being self-indulgent. Smart and skilled, but also honest and strong, she possesses a modern edge that pushes her out of the folk-singer mold and into the realm of inventive, innovative pop music. SKU: 1005075

Unplugged [SACD]
Personnel: Tony Bennett, K.D. Lang, Elvis Costello (vocals); Ralph Sharon (piano); Doug Richeson (bass); Clayton Cameron (drums). Engineers: Mitch Maketansky, John Harris. Recorded live at Sony Studios, New York, New York on April 12, 1994. MTV UNPLUGGED won 1995 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance. "Moonglow" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration. Sometimes, if you live long enough, and remain true to your artistic principles, people catch up with what you're doing. Not that singer Tony Bennett has been withering away in the weeds. When popular song stylists the likes of Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby place you at the top of Olympus, well...you the man. MTV UNPLUGGED reprises the greatest moments in Bennett's concert repertoire, songs he's been refining for 40 years. The only difference is that thanks to enthusiastic fans like Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a young audience is ready to embrace the classic Tin Pan Alley song forms, and swinging jazz trio approach that has long distinguished Bennett's stylizedpresentation. Bennett has a dramatic, understated way of personalizing the narrative elements of a song. "Fill my heart with song, let me sing forevermore," he pleads on "Fly Me To The Moon," a tune he's probably done 10,000 times, yet it sounds like he's grasping the meaning for the very first time. The effect is stunning, and even on tunes where his pitch wavers, his way of getting back in tune is just so hip and swinging. On a dreamy "Moonglow" and a coy "They Can't Take That Away From Me" he shares the mic with k.d. lang and Elvis Costello respectively, and the manner in which the old pro's generosity of spirit draws the youngsters into his orbit is indicative of Tony Bennett's enduring grace and charm. Crescent
John Coltrane Quartet: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 27 and June 1, 1964. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered by Eric Labson (MCA Studios). Like the legendary A LOVE SUPREME, John Coltrane's CRESCENT is one of the most revered albums of his career. The classic Coltrane quartet is in prime form as Tyner, Garrison and Jones form a tight bond with their leader in a stunning display of expression and musical interaction. Coltrane stretches and contorts his sound to construct solos of mesmerizing beauty as on the opening title track. Thebrooding ballad "Wise One" is a free-form lilt that meanders its way through the haunting melody while Jones' cymbals surge and swell in support. The classic blues of "Bessie's Blues" and the exceptional "Lonnie's Lament" provide examples of this group's ability to express powerful moods on both ends of the emotional spectrum. The grand finale "The Drum Thing" reflects a Middle Eastern influence as Coltrane's snaking melody floats above Jones' churning solo that eventually erupts into an explosive torrent of sound.
