This Nation's Saving Grace
The Fall includes: Mark E. Smith (vocals, guitar, violin); Simon Rogers (guitar, keyboards, bass); Brix Smith (guitar, background vocals); Craig Scanlon (guitar); Stephen Hanley (bass); Karl Burns (drums). Producers: John Leckie, SimonRogers, Mark E. Smith. As stubbornly maverick as ever, the Fall's tenth album hinges on their now-accustomed dissonance, into which a tighter, commercial edge was introduced. New guitarist Brix Smith, wife of leader Mark E., added a partly melodious sheen that brought an air of 60s subculture to the group's post-industrial rattle. Nothing was sacrificed in the process and while "Bombast" hurtles with a vicious power, talismen Can were acknowledged in "I Am Damo Suzuki," the name of the German band's Japan-born singer. Mark Smith towers over the proceedings, his voice prowling about the music, enhancing its intensity. This album shows the Fall extending stylistic barriers without sacrificing their individuality. Protection
Massive Attack: Mushroom, 3-D, Daddy G. Additional personnel: Nicolette, Tracey Thorn, Tricky, Horace Andy (vocals); Chester Kamen (guitar); Craig Armstrong (piano); Rob Merril (drums). Bristol's trip-hop pioneers crystallize their melancholic splendor on PROTECTION. It's a simmering shadow of a soundtrack to urban life, where dub, hip-hop, electronica and soul mesh into something quite singular. Imagine the chilling threnody of scene-mates Portishead allied with rough dancehall, club and South Bronx bass-beats, set ablaze by Mushroom, 3-D and Daddy-G's sour gaze into the millennial horizon. A host of fine guest vocalists help drive the vocal tunes, in turn making theinstrumentals stand out all the more. It is a juxtaposition of cold and hot, alienation and unity, that informs PROTECTION. Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl steals the show with her sure, silky vocals on the title track, her voice a sweet fire that thrives in a frosty wind, just barely anchored by the entrancing swirl of wah-guitar, strings and phased keyboard drones. Old-school reggae favorite Horace Andy tears up "Spying Glass" with a haunting lilt over the house-dub beat. "Sly" evokes the icy landscapes of Bjork's late-'90s work, albeit with the warm gust of string passages. "Karmacoma" features fellow trip-hopper Tricky, adding further motion to the forward-looking pop vision of PROTECTION. SKU: 1005473

Ultra
Depeche Mode: Andrew Fletcher, David Gahan, Martin Gore. Additional personnel: B.J. Cole (pedal steel guitar); Doug Wimbish (bass); Keith LeBlanc, Gota Yashiki (drums); Danny Cummings, Victor Endrizzio, Jaki Liebezeit (percussion); Daniel Miller. With Alan Wilder now gone, ULTRA is DepecheMode's first album as a trio. But in many ways it marks a return to form for the band. Producer Tim Simenon gives ULTRA a rich, lush sound that rejects the straight-ahead rock and analog experimentation of VIOLATOR and SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION. Instead, ULTRA moves deftly between the sparseness of Depeche Mode's legendary early work and the complex, hard-edged sounds the band came to experiment with. The wide dynamic range allows for seamless interplay between thick, atmospheric keyboards, snaking, intertwining programming lines, and an expansive palette of guitar textures. "The Bottom Line" features a blend of sweet pedal-steel guitar (played by session great B.J. Cole) and plaintive, soaring synth sounds alongside two DM trademarks--ominous, low-end synth and David Gahan's reverb-soaked baritone. "Barrel Of A Gun" is driven by raspy, distorted vocals and a wild, throbbing backing track. For all that this band has picked up in 17 years, it hasn't forgotten where it came from. SKU: 1004781

Beggars Banquet [SACD] [Remastered]
The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England. Retreating from the psychedelia of THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST, the Stones released the roots-rock single "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and then the album BEGGAR'S BANQUET. It was hailed as a rock masterpiece, and remains the favorite of many Stonesfans. BEGGAR'S BANQUET played to the Stones' strengths. The ironic lead-off ("Sympathy For The Devil") led many rock-baiters to conclude that singer Mick Jagger actually was the devil, or at least a satanic follower. Many of the other tracks, particularly the hit "Street Fighting Man," highlighted the solid rhythm section interplay of Wyman and Watts, while Jones contributed a typically down-home slide guitar part to "No Expectations," and the writing team of Richards and Jagger summoned up images of their deep blues roots. XXX
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums, percussion). Having avoided the fate of many '70s boogie bands, which became confounded by the new wave direction popular music took in the '80s, ZZ Top continued incorporating synths and mechanized beats into its sturdy blues-rock sound well into the '90s. On its 14th studio album, the "Lil Ole Band From Texas" continues dabbling with the sounds of technology. Merging Billy Gibbons' dirty-sounding fuzz guitar with chugging beats, ZZ Top creates songs such as "Crucifixx A Flatt" and "Dreadmonboogaloo" that wouldn't sound out of place at a rave. Elsewhere, the Texas trio pays homage to its blues roots, particularly on the grinding "Fearless Boogie" and the slow burn of "Made Into a Movie." The last quarter of XXX brings together live cuts that evidence ZZ Top's split personality as blues mavens and samplers of the Silicon Age. The more traditional segment finds Elvis Presley's normally finger-snapping "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" transformed into drawn-out 12-bar blues while Gibbons tears up the sublimely lascivious shuffle "Belt Buckle" with some impressive work on slide guitar. The remaining two numbers are a chugging version of "Pincushion" renamed "Sinpusher" and the faster-moving"Hey Mr. Millionaire," featuring a barely discernible Jeff Beck on vocals. SKU: 5055786

Singles Going Steady [Remastered]
SINGLES GOING STEADY is a collection of the Buzzcocks' singles, including both A and B-sides. Buzzcocks: Pete Shelley (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Steve Diggle (vocals, guitar); Steve Garvey, Garth Smith (bass); John Maher (drums). Engineers: Alan Wistanley, Doug Bennett, Martin Rushent. Recorded at Eden Studios and Abbey Road Studios, London, England; T.W. Studios, Fulham, England; Olympic Studios, Barnes, England; Strawberry Studios, Stockport, England. The Buzzcocks emerged from Manchester's thriving punk enclave with a succession of startling pop singles. Tight melodies and highly memorable hooklines were enveloped in a breathless group sound full of purpose and drive which contrasted with singer Pete Shelly's dispassionate, almost throwaway, delivery. These eight singles, both a-sides and flips, covered a variety of subject matter, from masturbation ('Orgasm Addict') to 1981 nuspeak ('Everybody's Happy Nowadays'), without recourse to obfuscation. Such seminal recordingshave ensured the Buzzcocks' place in a lineage just a bit below the Kinks and the Smiths as one of the best purveyors of the 45 rpm. SKU: 1063620

Live
Personnel: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Mike Inez, Mike Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums, percussion). Producers include: Tony Wilson. Compilation producer: Peter Fletcher. Engineers include: Mike Walter, Mark Narficy. Recorded live between 1990 & 1996. The simply titled LIVE offers a glimpse of AIC's moody, explosive live performances, captured between 1990 and 1996. Pre-dating the band's Columbia recordings is the country-punk track "Queen of the Rodeo," also found on the box setMUSIC BANK. This track is a notable inclusion, showing that Alice In Chains have a sense of humor behind the wall of musical gloom they've made for themselves. Best displayed on "Would?" and "Angry Chair," the tasteful, all-too-often overlooked drumming of Sean Kinney shines brightly here. The included version of "Love Hate Love" has a Doors-like intensity, with Layne Staley's vocal dynamics piloting the track like a vessel. LIVE is short on stage banter and thankfully long in unpolished, raw, powerful live recordings of these seminal Seattle hard rock masters. SKU: 1072472

Cloud Nine [Remastered]
Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jeff Lynne (guitar, keyboards, bass); Eric Clapton (guitar); Bobby Kok (cello); Jim Horn (tenor & baritone saxophone); Elton John, Gary Wright (piano); Ray Cooper (drums, percussion); Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner (drums). Recorded in England. Includes liner notes by George Harrison. After a five-year hiatus from recording, during which time he worked with his film production company, George Harrision returned to the studio in 1987 and cut the Jeff Lynne-produced CLOUD NINE. Harrison and Lynne made for a perfect match, as this album proved to be a comeback for the reclusive ex-Beatle. Joined by an all-star band that included Eric Clapton, Elton John, and Ringo Starr, Harrison put together a collection that includes sitar-tinged reminiscences of his former musical life ("When We Were Fab"), slinky psychedelia (the title track), and an obscure R&B tune that Harrison took to the top of the charts ("Got My Mind Set on You"). Although Harrison used the twangy irresistibility of "Devil's Radio" to take a swipe at gossip, he contrasted it with the bright-eyed optimismof "This Is Love." After deciding not to tour, George Harrison joined Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison in the Traveling Wilburys the following year. SKU: 6552516

Room To Breathe
Personnel includes: Reba McEntire (vocals); Vince Gill (vocals); James Lowry (acoustic guitar, nylon string guitar); Dan Dugmore (electric & steel guitar, lap steel guitar, background vocals); J.T. Corenflos, John Jorgenson (electric guitar); Larry Franklin, Dave Talbot (banjo); Alison Krauss (fiddle, background vocals); Randy McCormick (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Gary Prim (keyboards); John Hobbs (synthesizer); Larry Paxton (bass); Paul Leim (drums, percussion); Linda Davis,Chip Davis, Marabeth Jordan, Lisa Cochran, Bergen White, Louis Nunley, Sonny Isaacs (background vocals); Nashville String Machine. Producers: Reba McEntire, Buddy Cannon, Norro Wilson. ROOM TO BREATHE not only represents Reba McEntire's first album in four years, but also acknowledges what her time away from making music has done for her creativity in-between appearing on Broadway and performing as the star of her own sitcom on the WB network. Despite this flood of success, McEntire's stayed true to her country fans by singing songs that touch on the day-to-day struggles of the common person. Among the topics addressed are the horrors of Alzheimer's disease (a touching "Moving Oleta") and the finality of a busted-up relationship (the Vince Gill duet "It Just Has to Be This Way.") With guest background singers Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski aboard, Reba also looks at the loneliness occupying the void of a broken relationship on "Once You've Learned to Be Lonely." Thankfully, this Okie native balances the gloomier aspects of this outing with downright uplifting fare that includes the gospel shouter "Love Revival," the equally inspiring "Sky Full of Angels," and sibling lovefest "My Sister," featuring harmonies by Linda Davis. With ROOM TO BREATHE, Reba McEntire has simultaneously hit her music-making stride while managing to recharge her creative battery. SKU: 6542283

All This And More
The Dead Boys: Stiv Bators (vocals); Jimmy Zero, Cheetah Chrome (guitar); Jeff Magnum (bass); Johnny Blitz (drums). Principally recorded live at CBGB's, New York, New York between April 7, 1977 and March 11, 1978. Includes liner notes by Arthur Alexander and Cheetah Chrome. All tracks have been digitally remastered. An archival two-disc set, ALL THIS AND MORE collects 35 live performances by the New York punk scene's most outrageous band. The sound quality varies wildly from track to track, but the noisy, though deceptively catchy songs and punk attitude come through with full force. The late Stiv Bators sneers and bawls his way throughout the whole disc, running through nearly every track on the Boys' two classic albums, YOUNG LOUD AND SNOTTY and WE'VE COME FOR YOUR CHILDREN. There's also some non-album material and unexpected covers, such asMott The Hoople's "Death May Be Your Santa Claus." ALL THIS AND MORE is by far the best of the many Dead Boys live archival releases. SKU: 4116599
