Friends
Personnel: Chick Corea (piano, Fender Rhodes); Joe Farrell (reeds, flute); Eddie Gomez (bass); Steve Gadd (percussion). Recorded at Kendun Recorders Inc, Burbank, California. Includes liner notes byChick Corea. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio. After his days as the leader of the highly successful fusion group Return To Forever, Chick Corea turned to a more traditional style in his solo career. FRIENDS from 1978 features elements of swing, Latin music and the sensitive intimacy inherent in a small acoustic ensemble. And what an ensemble it is; no less than Joe Farrell (reeds, flute), Eddie Gomez (bass) and Steve Gadd (drums) are on hand to masterfully interpret Corea's dynamic compositions. The results are nothing less than magnificent. It takes little time to hear why these four virtuosos were the most in-demand musicians of their era. The opening "The One Step" offers a caressing melody by Corea on the Fender Rhodes piano, opening up into a tight, swinging solo section driven by the inimitable Gadd. The flowing "Waltz for Dave," a tribute to Dave Brubeck, swings lightly as Farrell turns in a spectacular flute performance. Things really start to burn on "Samba Song," a muscular Latin piece that each member executes impressively. Likewise, the fast-paced "Sicily" is a fiery samba that displays Corea's knack for the genre. The session closes with the stunning "Cappucino," a modern bebop tune that could only have been performed by this sensational group of FRIENDS. SKU: 6533660

Come Swing With Me [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Billy May, Nelson Riddle, Skip Martin (arranger, conductor); Heinie Beau (arranger). Recorded between December 8, 1953 and March 6, 1962. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Capitol Records "Entertainer Of The Century" series. The third Sinatra-Billy May album recorded for Capitol continues in the effortlessly swinging vein of its predecessors, COME FLY WITH ME and COME DANCE WITH ME. This period of Sinatra's recording career found him in a particularly nostalgic mood, as he was simultaneously working on I REMEMBER TOMMY, a look back at his days with the Dorsey band. The selections here also harkback to that time, though a bit less specifically. Featured are Sinatra's modernized swing takes on tunes like "Yes, Indeed" and "I've Heard That Song Before," Big Band classics associated respectively with former Sinatra bosses Dorsey and Harry James. Fantasies And Delusions (Music For Solo Piano)
Full title: Opus 1-10: Fantasies & Delusions: Music For Solo Piano. OPUS 1-10 is Billy Joel's first collection of classical compositions, as performed by pianist Richard Joo. Recorded at Vienna Konzerthaus at The Mozartsaal, Vienna, Austria in June 2001. If FANTASIES & DELUSIONS were used in a blindfoldtest, it's conceivable that a listener might guess the works to be those of a 19th-century composer. Instead, they're the inaugural efforts at Classical composition by Billy Joel, who, with this debut recording of solo works for piano, ventures into the perilous waters of "serious music." Joel knows his way around a melody and uses his skill to construct lyrical elaboration's that hark back to another time yet allow his distinct musical voice to be heard, most notably in the Celtic-flavored Air (Dublinesque). No astringent harmonies, atonality, or minimalist musings here; the compositions--such as Reverie, Fantasy, and the three Waltzes, among others--are steeped in the Romantic tradition and loaded with the influence of composers such as Chopin, Debussy, and Rachmaninov. There's even a hint of Bach-like counterpoint in the Invention In C Minor. And, like his Pop creations, they're well-crafted, tuneful, and designed for mass appeal. Joel opts not to perform these pieces himself. Instead, he enlists the services of Richard Joo, who offers straightforward readings of the works. FANTASIES & DELUSIONS should appeal to the Piano Man's many fans and may even win over a few skeptics. SKU: 1067515

Hours...
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, 12-string acoustic guitar, keyboards, drum programming); Reeves Gabrels (6- & 12-string acoustic & electric guitars, drum loops, programming); Mark Plati (acoustic & electric 12-string guitars, Mellotron, bass, programming); Chris Haskett (guitar); Mike Leveque, Sterling Campbell (drums); Everett Bradley (percussion); Holly Palmer (background vocals). Recorded at Seaview, Bermuda. "Thursday's Child" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. After releasing the techno industrial, Trent Reznor-influenced EARTHLING in 1997, David Bowie came back down to Earthon HOURS. And although this album has an ambient feel and contains its share of loops and programming, it is organic overall. HOURS manages to be cutting edge and personal at the same time. "Thursday's Child," a commercial-sounding single, uses strings and synthesizers to create an atmospheric feel. Credible solo performer Holly Palmer lends her strong voice to the track. "Something in the Air" features the restrained yet effective guitar talents of Reeves Gabrels, who has previously worked with Bowie on his solo material and in Tin Machine. "Survive" is a beautiful tune that features both Mellotron and an acoustic intro and ending. "If I'm Dreaming My Life" features the formidable rhythm guitar of Chris Haskett, who has given the Rollins band its metallic crunch. The dark rocker "The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell" is also another standout track. The subdued feel of HOURS shows a classic rocker who is at ease and introspective. Not one to rest on his laurels, David Bowie continues to put out vital material. SKU: 1086981

American Industrial Ballads
A collection of 24 songs which were written and sung as a result of the great industrialization of America over the last 140 years. Includes liner notes and a new introduction by Irwin Silber. For all the attention he received through the '50s and '60s as a rabble-rousing socialist provocateur, Pete Seeger has always been first and foremost a historian and musicologist. The liner notes of the 1956 release AMERICANINDUSTRIAL BALLADS refer to the album as "a collection of 24 songs which were written and sung as a result of the great industrialization of America over the last 140 years." While there's definitely political content--the union anthem "Eight-Hour Day," which commemorates the Haymarket Riots, is among the more strident numbers--the focus is not on ideology but people. The lives of the workers, from factory wage-earners to miners and farmers, are what interests Seeger, and he sings their songs with both reverence and flashes of the sly humor the songs' originators intended. This one-disc reissue of a two-album set includes the original liner notes by historian Irwin Silber. SKU: 1005705

Redford, Guy Moon, Richard "Koz" Kosinski, Ian "Mac" McLagan (keyboards); Ray Ohara (bass, percussion); Leland Sklar, Nathan East, Neil Stubenhaus (bass); Ian Wallace (drums, percussion, programming); Russ Kunkel, John Robinson, Carlos Vega (drums); Rob Fraboni, Lenny Castro (percussion); Blondie Chaplin, Steve Ross, Christine McVie, Todd Sharp, Ivan Neville, Sippie Wallace, Earl Smith, Rosemary Butler, Max Carl (background vocals); Tower Of Power Horns. Producers: Bill Payne, George Massenberg, Rob Faroni, Steve Tyrell, Russ Kunkel. Engineers include: George Massenburg, Terry Becker, Rob Fraboni. Recorded at Shangri-La Studios, Malibu, California in 1983; Tyrell-Mann Studio, Los Angeles, California in 1986; The Complex, West Los Angeles, California in 1983 & 1986. Digitally remastered by Teresa Caffin. Produced by George Massenburg (Linda Ronstadt) and Bill Payne of Little Feat, LIVES is full of slick '80s production: big-sounding guitars, smooth jazz trimmings and sanitized rhythm arrangements. There are also contributions from some of the biggest pop songwriters of the time. Song doctors solicited includeWill Jennings (who co-wrote "Stand Up To The Night," a number used in the Farrah Fawcett comeback Extremities) and the team of Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance ("No Way To Treat A Lady"). Raitt's cover choices include a loving rendition of Toots Hibbert's "True Love Is Hard To Fine" (featuring Raitt's hero Sippie Wallace on harmonies) and "Angel," yet another Eric Kaz gem. Inexplicably, however, NINE LIVES failed commercially at a time when similar records by Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood did well. SKU: 1067345

In A Word: Yes 1969
Yes includes: Jon Anderson, Trevor Horne (vocals); Trevor Rabin (vocals, guitar); Steve Howe (guitar); Rick Wakeman, Patrick Moraz, Tony Kaye, Geoff Downes (keyboards); Chris Squire (bass); Bill Bruford, Alan White (drums). Compilationproducers: Yes, David McLees. Includes liner notes by Chris Welch and Bill Martin. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Both IN A WORD: YES and 1991's YESYEARS offer a chronological view of the pioneering prog-rock band's work throughout its many lineup changes, interspersed with a few previously unreleased tunes. YESYEARS offered a considerably higher percentage of unreleased material. But looking at it optimistically, that leaves IN A WORD, which is one disc longer, with more room to anthologize the band's recorded canon. And while the boxes have a number of classic Yes cuts in common, there is no overlap between the rarities. For Yes fans interested in bang for their buck, this five-disc box retails for about the same price as its four-disc rival. SKU: 1073975

Art Of Losing, The [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. American Hi-Fi: Stacy Jones, Jaime Arentzen (vocals, guitar); Drew Parson (vocals, bass); Brian Nolan (vocals, drums). Recorded Sunset Sound Studio 2, Hollywood, California. Right from the first note struck by singer/guitarist Stacy Jones's band American Hi-Fi, the ex-Veruca Salt/Letters to Cleo drummer is up front about his love of straight-forward rock & roll; the kind that doesn't fit under any kind of pop-punk, emo, or rap-rock umbrella. THE ART OF LOSING finds Jones successfully indulging his tastes thanks to a snappy mix of big guitars and inescapable hooks. If you're still unsure as to what makes hisheart race a little faster, it all becomes clear when Jones implores a former paramour to give back his Pixies, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, and My Bloody Valentine records throughout "The Breakup Song." Although this sophomore effort leans towards a heavier sound, American Hi-Fi still manages to sneak in other recognizable influences. Among the most recognizable are the Burundi drumming intro of the title cut that falls somewhere between Adam Ant and Bow Wow Wow, and the soaring harmonies and guitar that should make "This Is the Sound" the envy of any self-respecting Brit-pop band. Fans of garage rock ("Built For Speed") and Sonic Youth ("Teenage Alien Nation") will also find THE ART OF LOSING to be a win-win situation. SKU: 1081072

Pay Attention
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Dicky Barrett (vocals); Lawrence Katz (guitar); Tim Burton, Roman Fleysher (saxophone); Dennis Brockenborogh (trombone); Joe Gittleman (bass); Joe Sirois (drums); Ben Carr. Additional personnel includes: Billy O'Malley, John Goetchius, Allan Sheinfeld, Folf Lansjoen, Nat Freedberg, Fran Flannery, Mark Higgins, Paul Scarpino, Bob Richards, Ernie Wilson, The Big Bad Bollocks, Nate Albert. Producers: Paul Konderie, Sean Slade, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Recorded at Long View Farms, North Brookfield, Massachusetts. After having spent the '90s leading the ska charge, only to be commercially surpassed by West Coast peers No Doubt, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' sixth studio album takes a mature turn. Still distinguished by frontman Dickie Barrett's gargled-glass vocals and a punchy horn section, the Beantown natives make a creative leap forward with their songwriting despite the departure of guitarist and main cog Nate Albert. Among the topics covered here are wisdom gained in the march towards old age ("I Know More"), a post-Columbine commentary on teens ("High School Dance"), and a slam on corporate life's influence on pop culture ("Allow Them"). Musically, the Bosstones develop beyond their third-generation approach towards ska. "Riot On Broad Street" finds them joining forces with the Big BadBollocks for a hometown love letter that could have easily been written by the Pogues, while "She Just Happened" is wrapped in light Caribbean rhythms and chiming Afro-pop guitar. Elsewhere, the opening track "Let Me Be" is given a cool jazz intro before morphing into an infectious Two-Tone rave-up. The riotous octet even comes up with a post-punk sequel to Dylan's "My Back Pages," in "I Know More." SKU: 1032180

Producers include: The Doobie Brothers, Ted Templeman, Lucy Simon, David Levine, Rodney Mills. Compilation producers: Gary Peterson, David McLees, Bruce Cohn, The Doobie Brothers. Engineers include: Marty Cohn, Donn Landee, Jim Isaacson. Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso. Digitally remastered by Andrew Garver & Bill Inglot (A&M Mastering). The Doobie Brothers have been a rock music staple for decades, and Rhino Records has outdone itself with this premier box set. No fewer than 14 members have played with the band, and at the time of this set's release, the Doobies had amassed 16 Top 40 singles. But musical style and lineup changes haven't changed the feel-good vibe of the band. The fast acoustic singalong "Nobody" highlights the band's self-titled debut, while "Listen to the Music" and "Rockin' Down the Highway" best represent their second album. Early material ranges from the beautifully acoustic "White Sun," to the synthesizer-laden "Natural Thing," to the fast rocker "China Grove." "I Cheat the Hangman" is a symphonically eerie track that will surprise anyone who only knows the band's FM hits. "Takin' It to the Streets" ushers in the Michael McDonald era, one in which his soulful yet gruff vocals shine on "You Belong to Me" and "What a Fool Believes." Original vocalist Tom Johnston and the band's hard rock sound returned in the late '80s on "The Doctor." The fourth CD includes a live version of the rock gospel tune "Jesus Is Just Alright," and the unreleased "Peace in the Valley." SKU: 1075247

This I Gotta See
Personnel include: Andy Griggs (vocals); Delbert McClinton, Bekka Bramlett (vocals); Randy Scruggs (acoustic guitar, slide guitar, National guitar, banjo); Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); Brent Rowan(electric guitar, slide guitar); Dan Dugmore (electric 12-string guitar, steel guitar, dobro); Glen Duncan, Stuart Duncan (mandolin, fiddle); Steve Nathan (piano, Wurlitzer piano, organ, Hammond b-3 organ, synthesizer); Michael O'Martian (piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Michael Rhodes (bass guitar); Greg Morrow (drums, percussion). Recording information: Ocean Way Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; Scruggs Sound Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. On his third outing, Louisiana-born Andy Griggs continues his streak of hits with a sound that's indebted to Southern rock and latter-day Outlaw Country artists like Travis Tritt. Griggs comes charging out of the gate with a hard-hitting, electric sound on the first track, the anthemic title song. Thereafter, blues-rock guitar licks and rock rhythms rub shoulders with country ballads, fiddles, and acoustic guitars. There's enough of a rock & roll production aesthetic here to suggest that Griggs has more than a few ZZ Top albums in his record collection, but the slower, more country-oriented tracks will appeal to more traditional country listeners. With a closing number that could have come off a vintage Charlie Daniels album, Griggs has got a bit of the Southern rebel in him as well, and THIS I GOTTA SEE never falls into a stylistic rut. Columbia Years 1972-1986, The
THE HERBIE HANCOCK BOX includes a 56 page booklet.
Personnel: Herbie Hancock (piano, electric piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, synthesizer, mini-Moog synthesizer, vocoder); Gavin Christopher, Bobby McFerrin (vocals); Lee Ritenour, Ray Parker Jr. (guitar); Bennie Maupin (flute, soprano saxophone); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Julian Priester (alto trombone); Chick Corea (piano); Patrick Gleeson (ARP synthesizer); Ron Carter (bass instrument); Buster Williams (double bass); Paul Jackson (bass guitar); Harvey Mason, Mike Clark, Tony Williams, Billy Hart (drums); Kenneth Nash , Sheila Escovedo, Bill Summers (percussion); Julia Waters, Maxine Waters (background vocals). Producers: David Rubinson; Herbie Hancock; Bill Laswell Compilation Producers: Bob Belden; David Rubinson. Liner Note Author: Chuck Mitchell. Recording information: 1973 - 1988. This four-disc box set documents Herbie Hancock's recorded career during the 1970s and '80s, and contains nearly all of the pianist's most famous compositions. However, this collection is not just about greatest hits. Project director Seth Rothstein dug deep into the Hancock archives to create a release that also has great variety and character. For example, the first disc begins with a nearly five-minute free-form improvisation from Hancock on electric piano. And even the well-known "Maiden Voyage" receives a completely different treatment here. Taken from a live concert in New York City, the track features Hancock and company turning this once understated and spacey modal jam into a fiery musical odyssey. "Domo" is another scorching live cut that boasts bold improvisations from saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and Hancock himself, all anchored by drummer Tony Williams, who drives the group with bombastic irreverence. THE HERBIE HANCOCK BOX also presents Hancock's forays into electronic dance music, the most obvious inclusion being "Rockit," his early-'80s radio hit. This funky piece adds an intriguing counterpoint to this collection. However, Hancock's jazz material remains his true legacy. SKU: 1076494

Too Long In Exile
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, harmonica, alto saxophone); John Lee Hooker, Ronnie Johnson (electric guitar); Teena Lyle (recorder, Hammond B-3 organ, vibraphone, congas, background vocals); Kate St. John (English horn, tenor saxophone); Candy Dulfer (alto saxophone); Howard Francis (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); John Savannah (Hammond B-3 organ, background vocals); John Allair (Hammond B-3 organ); Georgie Fame (keyboards); Richard Cousins, Nicky Scott (bass); Geoff Dunn, Paul Robinson, Kevin Hayes (drums). Recorded at The Wool Hall Studios, Bath, England and The Plant Recording Studios, Sausalito, California. Morrison spent much of the '80s and early '90s venturing into the mystic, exploring the spiritual side of his muse to the virtual exclusion of his blues/R&B roots, on a series of dreamy, often beautiful albums. Those that longed for the wailing Celtic bluesman of yore were overjoyed by the release of TOO LONG IN EXILE. Here, Van rediscovers his roots, covering great R&B tunes from the past and knocking out a few of his own. His lascivious growl invests the horn-driven "Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl" with just the right touch of menace. He simmers the ingredients of the potboiler "Lonely Avenue" perfectly, wringing emotion from the tune without descending into self-pity. On the brooding, minor-key "I'll Take Care Of You," Morrison interminglesdevotion with darker emotions to chilling effect. His own tunes are strong as well, especially the semi-autobiographical title tune, which paints a picture of Van as the eternal expatriate of the spirit, trying to reconcile his search for heaven with his place on earth. Alf
Personnel: Alison Moyet (vocals); Steve Jolley (guitar, background vocals); Tony Swain (keyboards); Tim Goldsmith (drums). Recorded at Odyssey Studios, London, England. Poor Alison Moyet may end up cursing this album for the rest of her career. Finding yourself with one of the year's biggest triumphs and rewarded by your record company with a large advance to put in your deposit account may sound satisfying, but for Alf it has not been an easy ride. The crisp Jolley/Swain production aided its success, and Moyet delivered a stunning voice to match strong material. Together they composed all the tracks bar one, Lamont Dozier's 'Invisible', the third hit single following on from 'Love Resurrection', and 'All Cried Out'. Powerful. High-quality pop which she has so far failed to match. SKU: 1003087

My Own Prison
Creed: Mark Tremonti (vocals, guitar); Scott Stapp (vocals); Brian Marshall (bass); Scott Phillips (drums). Additional personnel: John Kurzweg (keyboards). Recorded at The Kitchen Studio, Tallahassee, Florida and Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida. The music of Creed was born out of the strife and tumult of singer Scott Stapp's personal life. He turned down a university scholarship and left home at 17, estranging himself from his parents, whose strict religious mindset he had been at odds with for years. Eventually, he hit bottom, living in a car and scribbling down the ideas that became the lyrics to Creed songs. The mainstream success of MY OWN PRISON has taken Stapp and his fellow Floridians in Creed a long way from dumpster-diving. The band's combination of spiritually-oriented lyrics and guitar-based post-Nirvana hard rock connected in a big way with rock radio and with their vast, rabid following. MY OWN PRISON reflects the band's belief in the redemptive power of both God and rock and roll. Onsuch tunes as "In America," "What's This Life For" and "Pity For A Dime" the band expresses both sociopolitical and spiritual concerns while leaving plenty of room for world-class headbanging riffs. Amber
For its second full-lengthrecord, AMBER, Autechre mines the techno, ambient, and house genres of music and emerge with the finest record of the early part of its career. Largely structured on sweeping atmospherics (courtesy of synthesizer, naturally), the tracks here are fleshed out with twittering electric squelches, mid-tempo synthetic percussion, and the extremely complex usage of echoes. Lest that doesn't sound very interesting, the music contained (all of it is instrumental) is of the kind that allows your mind to wander, conjuring up its own images. "Foil" suggests a slowed-down, steam train entering an expanding station. "Montreal" is a six-minute conversation between honey-covered metal crickets set to a mid-tempo dance beat. "Slip" is a stately keyboard-driven affair that could be from an Ultravox record, except that it is underscored with a bubbling beat and electronically modified squeak toys. A series of drips set the tempo for "Further," which eventually evolves, over 10 minutes, into something that recalls Vangelis's score for BLADE RUNNER, complete with distant thunder. And the brittle, shimmering "Nil" evokes contradictory thoughts of huge, empty spaces and warm, enclosed, brightly lit ones. As an added bonus, AMBER has really nice cover art. SKU: 1011453

Reggae Greats
Recorded at The Black Ark Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. The compilers of Mango Records' Reggae Greats series must have faced quite the dilemma when looking over the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry's available material. Should they focus on his amazing production skills or on his exemplary performances? Would it make moresense to showcase his pioneering dubs or his more conventional song-oriented records? The logical conclusion was "all of the above," and REGGAE GREATS' only flaw is its skimpy ten-track length. Highlights include one of the finest reggae songs ever, Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" (later covered by the Clash), Jah Lion's "Wisdom," and two tracks from Perry's classic 1976 album ROAST FISH, COLLIE WEED AND CORN BREAD, "Soul Fire" and "Roast Fish and Cornbread." Although the original vinyl LPs in Mango's Reggae Greats series were poorly mastered and suffered from a distinct lack of bottom end-a fate worse than death for such bass-driven music-this flaw has been fixed in the series of excellent-sounding CD reissues.
