Once known as hard-core blues/R&B traditionalists, the Stones plunged deeper into the waters of original songwriting on BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, leading to a golden age of classic albums including LET IT BLEED, BEGGAR'S BANQUET, and EXILE ON MAIN STREET. In addition to scoring a double-sided smash-hit single in "Let's Spend The Night Together" backed with the baroque-pop "Ruby Tuesday," BUTTONS was also the last album produced by then-manager/svengali Andrew Loog Oldham. Moreimportantly, the obscure songs on this tight package show the Stones coming into their own as composers.
Between the ornate orchestrations of the aforementioned "Ruby Tuesday" and Mick Jagger's Dylanesque inflections on "She Smiled Sweetly," BUTTONS found the Stones in a strata far beyond covering Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. Although none of these developments ranks with the Beatles' contemporaneous sonic experiments, the fabs' bad-boy counterparts showed differing degrees of whimsy and sass. Examples are Ian Stewart's barrelhouse piano and Brian Jones' kazoo playing on "Cool, Calm & Collected," or the Dixieland-flavored "Something Happened To Me Yesterday."

Most Joplin aficionados still claim that her four studio albums never captured the true rock and roll fire of her live performances. The fourteen live tunes on IN CONCERT certainly seem to support that argument. This album captures the two significant phases of Joplin's brief but celebrated career. The first eight tracks feature her original band from San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company. Though notoriously sloppy and often simply out of tune, Big Brother had a raw rock & roll spirit that was perfectly suited to Joplin's earthy voice and boisterous stage presence. With guitarists James Gurley and Sam Andrew creating a psychedelic blues maelstrom behind her, Joplin belts out intense versions of "Down on Me," "Piece Of My Heart" and "All Is Loneliness" that are stunning examples of '60srock at its best.
Joplin split from Big Brother in 1968 and the remaining six tracks on IN CONCERT were recorded in the summer of 1970 with the Full Tilt Boogie Band. Though lacking the sense of reckless abandon that made Big Brother so exciting, these fine versions of Joplin standards like "Ball and Chain" and "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)" are what rock & roll legends are made of and IN CONCERT lets you hear why Joplin has remained a true rock legend.

If the late '60s were the Rolling Stones' road trip through rock's American roots, then EXILE ON MAIN STREET was the stop at the highway diner. Still inspired by their STICKY FINGERS recording sessions in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, EXILE was recorded in a basement in France, and found the Stones sounding more like Keith Richards' juke-joint band than ever before.
Following their 1969 tour, the Stones found themselvesunable to pay their exorbitant British income taxes. The band left England as tax exiles, and EXILE became a fitting title for a band on top of the rock charts, yet unable to pay their bills.
EXILE's production shows their in-hiding status, with a final mix that gives no hierarchy to specific instruments like other Stones albums. That EXILE was recorded in a basement is no surprise--much of it sounds as if it was recorded live at a gospel revival. In this rich assortment of gospel and blues Mick is by no means out of his element, but EXILE is under Keith's revivalist tent. Armed with an assortment of backing musicians and vocalists, EXILE is the closest the band ever came to religion.
The luxurious "Tumbling Dice" and "Loving Cup" betray their Southern gospel leanings, while their cover of Robert Johnson's "Stop Breaking Down" shows their undeniable respect for American blues. EXILE ON MAIN STREET's double-album configuration allowed the band to relax a bit, and allowed less obvious singles to dominate the final mix.

When they first made their nationwide splash with their 2000 debut album, teen bluegrass group Nickel Creek were one of the biggest mainstream crossovers since their producer/mentor Alison Krauss, successfully modernizing their tradition-conscious genre. The follow-up THIS SIDE finds the trio largely moving away from bluegrass altogether, though retaining the same spare acoustic instrumentation. A straight-ahead cover of alt-rock legends Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger" offers the first clue that this isn't exactly Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys. Nickel Creek doesn't need to look to outside material for genre exploration, though. "Green and Gray" seems to bear a debt to the Dave Matthews Band (or at least John Mayer), while "Should've Known Better" is in a hip-hop-inflected R&B mode, and the title track could be a gentler moment from the archives of Tonic or Third Eye Blind. There are afew tracks sprinkled throughout the album that nod to the band's beginnings, and in these (particularly the evocative version of the traditional "House Carpenter" and the sprightly instrumental opener "Smoothie Song") a possible future for bluegrass may be glimpsed.

PLAYS LIVE (HIGHLIGHTS) are highlights from 4 different North American concerts between December 1982 and Spring 1983.

PLAYS LIVE is the sound of a man finallyfreeing himself definitively from the shackles that had bound him for years. Admittedly those shackles, being front man for Genesis, one of the most fascinating and consistently creative prog-rock bands of the early '70s, were hardly severe. But they were a constraint nonetheless. (How often could Peter take some fan screaming "Suppers Ready" when trying to debut new material?) Finally, with a substantial body of solo material (four albums, three of them titled PETER GABRIEL), Gabriel was ready to put the ghost of Genesis to rest.
And while he did drive a stake through his art-rock past, Gabriel's incendiary stage presence could not be distinguished. Luckily the live set captured here, which draws heavily from the SECURITY album, is consistently first rate and involving. Not content just to breath fresh life into road-weary veterans like "D.I.Y" or "Solsbury Hill," Gabriel reaches for new emotional heights on stellar versions of "San Jacinto," "Biko" and "And Through The Wire." As a bonus for completists PLAYS LIVE also contains the ultra-rare "I Go Swimming." Overall an excellent portrait of Gabriel's live show.
