Orphans
ORPHANS contains covers of songs by Radiohead, The Mekons, Sparklehorse, Genesis, Neutral Milk Hotel, Gram Parsons, and others. Hazeldine includes: Shawn Barton, Tonya Lamm. After the band's exceptional debut, HOWBEES FLY, and a well-received spot on the No Depression tour, Albuquerque's Hazeldine went into a Los Angeles studio with friend/influence Walter Silas-Humara of the Silos and covered 10 favorite songs. ORPHANS shows the breadth of Hazeldine's influences, from the expected-Gram Parson's oft-covered "A Song For You," the Mekons' "Wild And Blue"-to the surprise of a run through Thin Lizzy's arrangement of the traditional "Whiskey In The Jar." Among the folks covered are Neutral Milk Hotel, Genesis, East River Pipe, and Sparklehorse, suggesting that Hazeldine is as much a moody, vaguely psychedelic pop band as it is an alt-country band. None of the covers outshine the originals, but neither are they embarrassments. ORPHANS is not an overwhelmingly or significantly creative effort, but it sounds like it wasn't meant to be. It's a fun record, a sweet tip of the hat to Hazeldine's influences. SKU: 1070703

Nymphetamine [PA]
Cradle Of Filth: Dani Filth (vocals); Paul Allender, James McIlroy (guitar); Martin Foul (piano); Herr Pubis (bass guitar); Adrian Erlandsson (drums). Recording information: 2004. NYMPHETAMINE (according to the band, a term defined as a ravenous addiction to classically beautiful women) is Cradle of Filth's sixth full-length album, and third in a row on a new label (in this case, Roadrunner Records). It's also stripped of the grandeur provided by a full orchestra and choir on 2003's DAMNATION AND A DAY. Time spent on the road with 2003's Ozzfest left the band with a need to simplify the arrangements, in an effort to capture the ferocity of their legendary live shows. What's left is heavily thrash-influenced and teeming with fluid guitar lines rooted in the classic British metal of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Relying less on synths, strings, and operatic background vocals, Cradle of Filth turns up the guitars a notch and delivers wave after wave of brutal yet melodic riffs anchored in the band's early influences. Guitarists Paul Allender and James McIlroy twist lines into dark harmonies on "Nemesis" and "Coffin Fodder," while delicate piano intros addatmosphere to "English Fire" and "Absinthe with Faust." The title track features a duet with Liv Kristine (Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves Eyes) that epitomizes the idea of beauty and the beast. NYMPHETAMINE proves that less can indeed mean more. SKU: 6572324

Never A Dull Moment
Personnel: Rod Stewart (vocals); Ron Wood (acoustic & electric guitar); Martin Quittenton (acoustic guitar); Gordon Huntley (steel guitar); Dick Powell (violin); Ian McLagan (piano, organ); Pete Sears (piano); Brian (chest piano); Spike Heatley (acoustic bass); Ronnie Lane (bass); Kenny Jones, Micky Waller (drums); Speedy (congas). All tracks have been digitally remastered. NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off....more raucous rock'n'roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On MyMind") and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away.") Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother Ron Wood, Stewart offers up the cheeky "Italian Girls" and "True Blue," a track that goes along at a mid-tempo clip before exploding into a heartfelt rave-up. Most notable is a collaboration with the Martin Quittenton on "You Wear It Well," an irresistable addition to the Stewart canon. Although the Sam Cooke cover is the one spot where the soulful Scot would be expected to indulge his R&B jones, Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind" is where Rod brings it all back home with a slow-burning vocal that wraps itself around the strolling tempo of the song. In The Pursuit Of Leisure [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Sugar Ray: Mark McGrath (vocals); DJ Homicide (DJ); Stan Frazier, Murray Karges, Rodney Sheppard. Sugar Ray: Mark McGrath (vocals, guitar); Stan Frazier (guitar, drums, background vocals); Rodney Sheppard (guitar, background vocals); Murphy Karges (bass); Craig "DJ Homicide" Bullock (turntables, background vocals). Additional personnel: Esthero, ProHoeZak, Shaggy (vocals). Recorded at Henson Studios, Hollywood, California. Why tamper with success? On IN THE PURSUIT OF LEISURE, Sugar Ray sticks pretty close to the style that's proven so successful for them on their previous albums; a peppy mix of ska, pop, hip-hop productiontechniques, and an early-'80s new wave sensibility. The latter is borne out most obviously in a lively cover version of Joe Jackson's 1979 breakthrough "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" Sugar Ray's particular mix of influences makes them spiritual kin to No Doubt, and in fact, "Mr. Bartender (It's So Easy)" sounds like a strange cross between Sweet's "Love is Like Oxygen" and the No Doubt hit "Hella Good." While the overall feel of this album will certainly be familiar to fans, Sugar Ray has turned out a fresh batch of tunes that finds them in no real danger of repeating themselves. "Can't Start," with it's amiable folk-guitar-meets-hip-hop-beat feel, is probably the closest thing here to the band's own hit "Every Morning." As long as there are summertime beach parties, barbecues, and the like, there will be a place for the sunny, good-time sound of Sugar Ray. SKU: 1085417

Live At Earls Court
Personnel: Morrissey (vocals); Boz Boorer (guitar, clarinet, congas, background vocals); Jesse Tobias (guitar); Mikey V. Farrell (trumpet, keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Gary Day (bass guitar); Deano Butterworth (drums). Recording information: Earl's Court, London, England (12/18/2004). Following his well-received 2004 comeback album, YOU ARE THE QUARRY, British rock icon Morrissey embarked on a lengthy tour. This live document presents the revered former Smiths singer performing at London's Earls Court in front of an adoring crowd of more than 17,000 people. Morrissey has no qualms about catering to Smiths fans, opening the set with a faithful rendition of "How Soon Is Now" Backed by a top-notch five-piece band that includes his longtime guitarist Boz Boorer, Moz runs through numerous album tracks and B-sides from QUARRY, along with Smiths classics and cover tunes. Morrissey's mid-tempo, reggae-tinged take on Patti Smith's "Redondo Beach" provides a nice change of pace in the energetic set, and later, a wonderfully dramatic version of the New York Dolls' "Subway Train"is paired in a medley with the rare track "Munich Air Disaster 1958." Throughout the concert, Moz is at his crooning best, proving that he can still work fans into a frenzy almost 20 years after his heyday with the Smiths. SKU: 6583140

Antenna
Cave-In: Stephem Brodsky (vocals, guitar); Ryan McGrath (guitar, background vocals); Caleb Scofield (bass, background vocals); John-Robert Conners (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Cello Studios, Los Angeles, California. This Boston quartet started out as an aggressive metal band, and over the course of a number of indie albums, gradually refined their sound by introducing more complex musical elements. By the time of their national breakout with major-label debut ANTENNA, their approach had become a combination of aggro-rock, emo, and somewhat Radiohead-like modern alt/prog-rock full of spacey atmosphere and sonic drama. While the stately, textured sound that's a key element ofthe production is impressive, it's equally interesting to see how Cave In have honed their sound to the point where they're capable of mixing catchy, concise hard-rock nuggets in among the spacier jaunts. There's little on ANTENNA that would sound out of place on a contemporary heavy rock radio station, yet there are enough other elements at work to set Cave In a step or two apart from the pack. Beacon Street Collection, The
No Doubt: Gwen Stefani (vocals); Tom Dumont (guitar); Eric Stefani (keyboards); Tony Kanal (bass); Adrian Young (drums). Additional personnel: Bradley (vocals); Eric Carpenter, Gerard Boisse (saxophone); Phil Jordan (trumpet); Gabe McNair (trombone). Engineers: Colin Mitchell, Ray Blair, Tom Dumont. Includes liner notes by No Doubt. THE BEACON STREET COLLECTION is No Doubt's sophomore release. Its ten tracks are the perfect prologue to their breakthrough album TRAGIC KINGDOM. On this album, No Doubt's sound is an amalgam of rock, hard-core and their own quirky spin on ska. One of the virtues of Gwen Stefani's guttural voice is the fact that it works well with any style No Doubt decides to use. A littlemore rocking than TRAGIC KINGDOM, THE BEACON STREET COLLECTION features a tasteful horn section and playful melodies that become instant sing-along hooks. No Doubt is now a household name. This reissue offers the opportunity to find out what made people want to bounce around to No Doubt's music before Stefani's bejeweled forehead became the totem of the skateboard generation. Face 2 Face [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Babyface (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, bass, programming); Snoop Dogg (rap vocals); Bill Meyers (arranger); Mike City, The Neptunes (various instruments); Bob Robinson (electric guitar, Hammond B-3 organ); Brion James (electric guitar, programming); Wayne Lindsey (Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Anthony Nance, Megahertz, Buckwild, Tim Kelly, Heavy D (programming); Adam Goldstein (vinyl scratches); Latrelle Simmons, Pharrell Williams (background vocals). Producers include: Mike City, The Neptunes, Babyface, Megahertz, Heavy D. Engineers include: Paul Botin, Brian Garten, Edward Quesada. Recorded at Brandon's Way, The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California; Chung King, New York, New York; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California. There's no denying that heartfelt love songs are Babyface's stock in trade, and there's certainly no shortage of those on FACE 2 FACE, but the Face does push the envelope just a touch on this album. "What If" is a classic slow-jam in Babyface's patented romantic ballad style, as are many other tunes here, but there are some slight stylistic diversions present as well. The breathless falsetto exhortations and syncopated rhythms of "There She Goes" make it sound like an outtake from Michael Jackson's OFF THE WALL. For another change of pace, Snoop Dogg adds a little hip-hop flavor to the proceedings via his guest appearance on "Baby's Mama." Meanwhile, the sizzling midtempo R&B of "Wish U Was My Girl" wouldn't have sounded out of place in the repertoire of "Diamonds and Pearls"-era Prince. FACE 2 FACE is the sound of a consummate craftsman who's found a way to have his cake and eat it simultaneously, and with a maximumamount of soul. SKU: 1066835

Walk Across The Rooftops, A
Producers: Paul Buchanan; Robert "Kool" Bell. The debut album from the enigmatic Blue Nile received tremendous reviews, yet barely scraped the chart. The promise was there, and it took shape on the second album Hats. Paul Buchanan's pleading voice is made for late-night listening in a cosy bedsitting room. Mulling over love lost, love found, happy times, sad times and kitchen sinks (I lied about the last bit, butyou get the picture), a beautiful landscape of evocative music soaks in rather than hitting you first time. Blue Nile can be played over and over again, which is why they have only felt the need to put out three records in 15 years. SKU: 3101752

Ghetto Heisman
Cassette available on Def Jam (063 223). NOTES: Personnel includes: Snoop Dogg, Scarface, Ice Cube, Nate Dogg, MC Ren, Case. Producers include: Buck Wild, Brian Wilson, Scott Storch, Rick Rock, Battlecat. Miffed at being denied his props by his contemporaries despite what, for a rapper, is a long career spanning most of the '90s (including a stint with Ice Cube and Mack 10), WC has here awarded himself a Heisman Memorial Trophy (usually awarded to football stars, most notoriously to O.J. Simpson) for achievements in rap. The fact that he's seen fit to award this trophy to himself shouldn't blind you to WC's qualities as a rapper--which are self-evident--it's just that recognition can sometimes be a long time coming. GHETTO HEISMAN is West Coast rap, lighter and more musically sophisticated than its Southern counterpart, though no less concerned with matters street, thuggy and druggy. WC's old Westside Connection bandmates Ice Cube and Mack 10 make an appearance on the Funkadelic-influenced"Walk," while there's a hilarious skit ("Fake N***as") in the style of a gospel meeting, and "Tears of a Killa" shows the hard-scrabble flip side of thug life in the 'hood. GHETTO HEISMAN should, all things being equal, earn WC the genuine respect of both peers and public. SKU: 1076652

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (Music From & Inspired By The Game/+CD-Rom)
Full title: Music From And Inspired By Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY TONYHAWK'S PRO SKATER 3 contains a bonus multimedia CD-ROM. Compilation producers: Nelson Bae, Lori Lahman. This collection of skate-punk and related genres, which appears under the name of extreme skateboard superman Tony Hawk, is both a homage to and a soundtrack for 'boarding. Punk mainstays NOFX's "What's the Matter With Parents Today?" neatly encapsulates the perennial problem of kids with overly hip parents ("Mom and dad/I think you ought to quit smoking so much pot/and hanging with my friends"), while Pennywise's chunky "Who's On Your Side" is a slice of teen alienation for the ages. Comment on social and world unrest is the order of the day with many of the bands featured here. Inimitable progressive hip-hoppers Outkast speed-rap their way through the topical "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)," and nu-metal kings Papa Roach's "Infest" is a thrashing poke in the eye to authority figures the world over. Most of the cuts here point up an intelligent and (mostly) subtle analysis of the world in which the kids find themselves, whether they're skateboard enthusiasts or not, but it's left to Ozomatli and their "Cut Chemist Suite" to offer the obvious solution--just dance your way out. Illadelph Half Life
The Roots: Rahzel "The Godfather Of Noyze" (vocals, various instruments); The Brother "?uestlove" ?uestion (vocals, keyboards, drums, percussion); Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, Malik "M-Ill-itant" B. (vocals); Leonard Nelson "Hub" Hubbard (cello, keyboards, bass); Kamal (keyboards, sleigh bells). Additional personnel: D'Angelo, Cassandra Wilson, Scratch, Angela Slates, Common, Amel Larrieux, Ursula Rucker, Dice Raw (vocals); Steve Coleman, Graham Haynes, Josh Roseman (horns); Scott Storch (keyboards); Julia Haines, Raphael Saadiq, Spanky, Tracey, Fatin, Lee Andrews, Bad Lieutenant, Kelo, Bahamadia, Dice Raw, M.A.R.S., David Murray, Q-tip, The Jazzyfatnastees. Producers include: The Brother ?uestion, Kelo, Chaos, The Grand Negaz. Principally recorded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ILLADELPH HALFLIFE represents an advancement in hip-hop that has been a long time in the making. Like Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest and the Wu-Tang Clan, the Roots sought to widen hip-hop's scope with their debut album, DO YOU WANT MORE?!!!??!, which incorporated live instruments and a jazzy funk feel. Critics praised it, but the band's positive messages didn't quite get through to rap's core audience (nor, it should be noted, did the Fugees' the first time around). It was as if the band had started teaching before its students were listening. With ILLADELPH HALFLIFE, the Roots have opted for a closer relationship with the boom-bap sound of true hip-hop, and they've managed to do so without letting go of the elements that made their debut special. Vocalists Black Thought and Malik B. still inject lyrical science into their rhymes, and here they're joined by fellow rap-educators Q-Tip (on "Ital"), Bahamadia ("Push Up Ya Lighter") and Common Sense ("UNIverse At War"). With ILLADELPH HALFLIFE, the Roots should finally make a very significant mark on the world of hip-hop. SKU: 1002344

Cruel Moon
Personnel includes: Buddy Miller (vocals, guitar); Julie Miller, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Jim Lauderdale, Joy Lynn White (vocals); Steve Fischel (pedal steel guitar); Tammy Rogers (fiddle); Phil Maderia (accordion, organ); Byron House (bass); Don Heffington (drums). Straddling the worlds of country and rock, CRUEL MOON has the best of both worlds. There's an earthy honesty to every performance, but the album also roars like a monster. Big, thick beats power the loud songs, while crystal-clear silence surrounds the ballads. Miller's a dazzling guitar player. He has toured with Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris (in her Spyboy band), both of whom show up on CRUEL MOON. Miller's songs were written primarily with his wife Julie Miller, whose own BROKEN THINGS was released at nearly the same time. Her "Somewhere Trouble Don't Go" rolls along like the slinkiest boogie in the Northern Hemisphere. Covers of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil's"I'm Gonna Be Strong" (a hit for Gene Pitney) and the Staple Singers' "It's Been a Change" showcase Miller's supple arrangements and vivid singing. Like Earle and Harris, Miller doesn't fit easily into radio formats of the '90s. But, as the years fall away, CRUEL MOON is sure to be embraced for what it is: a great album. SKU: 1025794
