Destroyer, The
Legend has it that Atari Teenage Riot's Alec Empire made this record on a dare, but when he was done, he was afraid it would be too extreme to listen to. And for some people, it will be. But others will crave it. It's like the exhilarating blast of a triple-espresso. THE DESTROYER is full of super-fast breakbeats, with virtually every sound distorted. Picture a drum-machine with no sense of propriety, bulldozing it's way through a Marshall stack. It's "drum-and-bass"' gone to hell and returning victorious. It's the sound of the walls of Jericho thundering down. If "industrial" is the sound of claustrophobic tension,"digital hardcore" is the liberating explosion of freedom. This is a NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS for the 21st century, and therefore absolutely essential. SKU: 4123814

Pacifico
The Lassie Foundation: Jeff Schroeder, Frank Lenz, Jason 71, Wayne Everett, Campuzano. Additional personnel: Julie Martin, John Santana, Jeremy Wood. The full-length debut by this Los Angeles quintet--they released three prior EPs, with some of those tracks re-recorded here--can most simply be described as "My Bloody Valentine doing PET SOUNDS." However, while accurate, that description is a bit reductive and discounts the creativity and vitality of the Lassie Foundation's sound. Jeff Schroeder's falsetto vocals and overdubbed harmonies blend with the susurrating waves of pink noise which surround the minor-key songs, but wheremost bands working this side of the stylistic street seem to think that cool sounds and enveloping ambiance are enough, the Lassie Foundation take the extra step of writing solidly melodic songs with instantly memorable choruses and hummable riffs. The yearning "Dive Bomber" and the sunshiny, Apples In Stereo-like "She's the Coming Sun--She's Long Gone" are substantial pop songs, not just exercises in atmosphere. They also get points for the judicious use of handclaps and "ba-ba-ba" vocals. SKU: 1047197

Is Love
Personnel: Al Green (vocals); Teenie Hodges (guitar); The Memphis Strings (strings); James Mitchell, Andrew Love, Lewis Collins (saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Archie Turner, Michael Allen (piano); Charles Hodges (organ); Leroy Hodges (bass); Howard Grimes (drums, congas, bongos); Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes, Duncan Sisters (background vocals). Recorded at Royal Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl. Once you've perfected a format you helped to invent, where do you go next? Miles Davis' response to that question was to abandon the format's structures and create a flowing, free-form style with a spontaneous, stream-of-consciousness feel. Al Green's answer was very much the same. In 1975, Green left behind the tight, meticulously-arranged style that made him an R&B hero to pursue a less corporeal muse. AL GREEN IS LOVE finds the singer jumping into his favorite song subject with both feet, almost to the point of obsession. The concepts of romantic, spiritual and physical love are fused into an organic whole, from the center of which Green emits reams of soulful, improvisatory luv-philosophy. An artist like Green is too naturally funky to let things drag, no matter how high-minded the proceedings, and cuts like "Oh Me, Oh My (Dreams In My Arms)" and "I Gotta Be More (Take Me Higher)" are propulsive and catchy, providing the perfect contrast to the delicate, contemplative mood of the bulk of the material here. By the end of this album, listeners should have little doubt as to the accuracy of its titular proclamation. SKU: 5075962

Miles Ahead [Remastered]
This reissue of MILES AHEAD contains 4 bonus tracks. Personnel: Miles Davis (flugelhorn); Gil Evans (arranger, conductor); Lee Konitz (alto saxophone); Taft Jordan, Ernie Royal, Bernie Glow, John Carisi, Louis Mucci (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Frank Rehak, Joe Bennett (trombone); Tom Mitchell (bass trombone); Willie Ruff, Tony Miranda, Jimmy Buffington (French horn); Bill Barber (tuba); Romeo Penque (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe); Sid Cooper, Eddie Caine (flute, clarinet); Danny Bank (bass clarinet); Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor (drums). Producer: George Avakian. Reissue producer: Phil Schaap. Recorded at the Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York, New York between May 6 and August 22, 1957. Includes liner notes by Phil Schaap, George Avakian and Andre Hodier. Digitally remastered by Phil Schaap. Miles Davis was part of a circle of musicians drawn to arranger Gil Evans' charts for Claude Thornhill's Orchestra--his lovely palette of woodwinds and deep brass, his way of voicing chords and accenting rhythms. Beginning with their innovative collaboration on BIRTH OF THE COOL, they created a luminous body of work, as Gil Evans played Billy Strayhorn to Miles' Duke Ellington. Beginning with MILES AHEAD, and continuing through works such as PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN, AT CARNEGIE HALL and QUIET NIGHTS they cultivated a cool attitude that defined jazz in popular consciousness. This is the second CD release of MILES AHEAD (look for the Legacylogo), and this edition returns to the original mono master takes, proceeding as one uninterrupted work--a concerto for flugelhorn soloist and mixed brass, woodwinds and rhythm. The jaunty brass counterpoint and contrary motion of "Springsville" launches Miles in full flight, descending into the gossamer Iberian shadings of "The Maids Of Cadiz." Shadowed by flutes, French horns and a dancing tuba, Miles celebrates Brubeck's lovely anthem "The Duke" with spacious lyric grace. The gorgeous soft chords of "My Ship" and the burnished deep brass of the title tune suggest how completely Evans transformed big band voicings (much as Ellington did), while the introspective manner in which Miles phrases suggests Billie Holiday. Evans' meandering "Blues For Pablo," which alternates between blues and flamenco-styled themes and the swinging stop time of Ahmad Jamal's "New Rhumba" form the emotional centerpiece of this otherwordly recital, concluding with a bracing brass cry so typical of earlier dance bands. Welcome To The Monkey House
This is an enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Dandy Warhols: Courtney Taylor-Taylor (vocals, guitar, bass); Peter Loew (guitar); Zia McCabe (keyboards, keyboard bass, background vocals); Brent DeBoer (bass, drums, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Yoad Nevo (guitar, programming); Niles Rodgers (guitar); Brian Coates (guitarpsichord); Parker Posey (mandolin); Jaimie Jackson (electric piano); Tony Visconti (bass, background vocals); Nick Rhodes (synthesizer); Sally Boyden, Sam Doss, Simon LeBon (background vocals). Producers: Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Tony Visconti. Never one to hide from their influences (look no further than the name), Portland natives the Dandy Warhols post them proudly on their fourth effort, WELCOME TO THE MONKEY HOUSE--they're literally on the album sleeve (note theVelvet Underground-esque banana). The record takes its name from a collection of Kurt Vonnegut short stories, and akin to the heralded author, stories unfold within stories, words cavort within folds within folds. The Dandy Warhols are unabashedly pretentious, painfully self-conscious, and often as pretty and precious as the most petulant ingenue; they also are purveyors of some of the most beguiling pop music this side of the cosmos. On WELCOME..., the Dandys inject into their glam-updated-into-indie-rock formula a healthy dose of 1980s synth-pop (with aid from no less than the heart and soul of Duran Duran itself, Simon LeBon & Nick Rhodes). The result is perhaps their most satisfying record to date, a clever, consistently catchy collection of songs, affable in spite of its sarcasm, sonically organic in spite of its sources. An opening semi-narrative salvo offers a few unforgettable observations woven together artfully before the band launches into single-of-singles "We Used to Be Friends" (the hooky equal of 2000's "Bohemian Like You") and from there the pop artistry never lets up. Girls Get Busy
Bratmobile includes: Molly Neuman (vocals, drums); Allison Wolfe (vocals); Erin Smith (guitar, background vocals). Additional personnel includes:Marty Key (guitar, bass); Audrey Marrs (keyboards, background vocals). Producers: Bratmobile, Marty Key, Aaron Prellwitz. Recorded at Toast Studio, San Francisco, California. On their second album since reforming in 1999 (their third overall), Washington DC's Bratmobile continues to move outside of the "lo-fi Riot Grrl" box they'd been slotted into early in their career. Adding bass (by the Young Pioneers' Marty Violence) and keyboards (Mocket's Audrey Marrs) to their previously limited guitar-drums-voice format, GIRLS GET BUSY is brash and noisy, with a definite old school post-punk flavor. "Shop For America," for example, has the thumping, kinetic stomp of an early Mekons or Au Pairs single. Lyrically, the song (alongside the equally timely "United We Don't") looks askance at the motivations behind post-September 11, 2001 jingoism, excoriating the Bush administration's calls for consumers to erase the deficit by spending more money than they could afford. As is usually the case with political punk, the lyrics don't do much more than raise the question, but songs like this are a refreshing return to oppositional political dialogue after a period of cowed voices. Other highlights include the seething "Shut Your Face," about the disappearance of Washington intern Chandra Levy, and the ironically poppy "What's Wrong With You," which features the album's strongest chorus and hookiest melody in service of a rousing call to feminist arms. Guaranteed to infuriate anyone with right-wing political views, GIRLS GET BUSY is bracing political punk. SKU: 1073202

Most interesting, however, is that ROCKET HOUSE finds Whitley taking a valiant stab at something that's always been just out of reach for him--mainstream accessibility. Guest contributions from high profile artists such as Dave Matthews and Bruce Hornsby certainly don't hurt this quest. The opening track, "To Joy (Revolution of the Innocents)," features banjos and turntable abstraction clashing comfortably to create a highly original ambient exposition. Sparse cuts such as "Solid Iron Heart" and "From a Photograph" retain an earthy quality reminiscent of Whitley's earliest work, while "Say Goodbye" and "Serve You" position the songwriter as an above-average pop balladeer. Whitley even incorporates electronica-influenced breakbeats into some tunes ("Vertical Desert" and "Rocket House"). ROCKET HOUSE mixes things up in a way that is seldom seen on one singular album. Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand: Alexander Kapranos (vocals, guitar); Nicholas McCarthy (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Robert Hardy (bass); Paul Thomson (drums, background vocals). On their self-titled debut, Glasgow foursome Franz Ferdinand lift the jagged, danceable sounds of British post-punk to elegant and dizzying new heights. While they may seem to have much in common with the wave of American bands emerging in the early 2000s, Franz Ferdinand demonstrates a close study of the genre and proves its prowess. If the Rapture is a rowdy kegger in a Brooklyn loft, then Franz Ferdinand is a gin-soaked dance-off at an outdoor European cafe where no table remains untipped. As disciples of the Fire Engines, Josef K, and Orange Juice, chief songwriters Alex Kapranos and Nicholas McCarthy temper the edges with a sense of melody that wisely falls just shy of Blondie-style bubble gum. The centerpiece is "Take Me Out" (a U.K. top ten hit), which plays out a series of come-ons between rival assassins, over what begins as a sneering slice of mid-1990s Britpop, only to morph into a funky dance-floor tune. Kapranos is oftenquoted as saying that the band was started in order to "make music that girls can dance to," but this unusually assured debut is quite likely to affect discriminating boys in exactly the same way. Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot
2 LPs on 1 CD: THE SPOTLIGHT KID (1972)/CLEAR SPOT (1972). Full performer name: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band: Captain Beefheart (vocals, harmonica, jingle bells); Winged Eel Fingerling, Russ Titelman (guitar); Zoot Horn Rollo (guitar, mandolin); Rockette Morton (guitar, bass); Ed Marimba (marimba, piano, harpsichord, drums, percussion); Orejon (bass); Drumbo, Ted Cactus, Rhys Clark (drums); The Blackberries (background vocals). Producers: Don Van Vliet, Ted Templeman. Engineers: Phil Schler, DonnLandee. Includes liner notes by Pete Johnson. After the unique TROUT MASK REPLICA, Beefheart moved slowly to what we mortals would call music, very much like the stuff on SAFE AS MILK. His "music from Venus" had never been quite so easy on the ear and CLEAR SPOT was a hit album, of sorts. Nobody other than John Lennon has been able to approximate the English language so brilliantly as this man. How can you resist "My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains" or "Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles?" The Captain can also fool us with a real love song, the sublime "Too Much Time." SKU: 5068992

Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy [SACD]
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Velma Middleton (vocals); Trummy Young (trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Billy Kyle (piano); Arvell Shaw (bass);Barrett Deems (drums). Compilation producer: George Avakian. Recorded from July 12-14, 1954 and October 19, 1956. Includes liner notes by George Avakian. This wonderful and historically monumental recording pairs the master of jazz trumpet and jazz singing with "the father of the blues." In the early years of the 20th century, composer W.C. Handy authored many blues numbers, some of which have gone on not only to become enduring standards in the genre, but also to influence a vast repertoire of popular music. Armstrong, who achieved some of his earliest successes with treatments of Handy favorites, is in superior form on this recording. Perhaps due to Handy's presence at the sessions (the booklet is full of wonderful photos of the two), Satch seems even more focused and full of enthusiasm than usual. With excellent support from a band that includes Trummy Young (trombone), Barney Bigard (clarinet), and Velma Middleton (vocals), Armstrong and Co. interpret such Handy favorites as "The Memphis Blues," "Beale Street Blues," and the immortal "St. Louis Blues." The CD appends five previously unreleased tracks and an interview with Handy, making this set immeasurably worthwhile, in terms of both historic importance and entertainment value. SKU: 6480768

Lonely Grill
Lonestar: Michael Britt (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Dean Sams (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, piano, keyboards); Richie McDonald (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards); Keech Rainwater (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Gary Burnette (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); Dan Huff (electric guitar); Bruce Bouton (steel & lap steel guitars); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Aubrey Haynie (mandolin, fiddle); Jonathan Yudkin (mandolin); Tim Lauer (accordion); Matt Rollings (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Steve Nathan (piano, synthesizer); Robbie Cheuvront (bass, background vocals); Mike Brignardello (bass); Paul Leim (drums); Eric Darken (percussion);Russell Terrell (background vocals). Principally recorded at The Tracking Room and Iliad Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. "Amazed" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best Country Song. In 1996, Lonestar had a hit ("No News") that mentioned Pearl Jam. In 1998, "You Walked In" namechecked Madonna and Princess Diana. On their third album, LONELY GRILL, they've thrown in a song ("Don't Let's Talk About Lisa") that mentions Marilyn Manson, Hanson and Ally McBeal. Thankfully, however, Lonestar make much more than cute novelty ditties. LONELY GRILL, Lonestar's first without additional lead vocalist John Rich, shows the band reaching new artistic heights. The menu features melodic, hook-laden tunes that run the gamut from party anthems ("Saturday Night") to heartfelt ballads ("Amazed") to Eagle-esque rockers ("Lonely Grill," "What About Now"). Standouts include the harmony-filled "I've Gotta Find You," in which the narrator ponders the many places he imagines his dream girl might be, and "Smile," in which a guy who's been dumped is determined to put on a brave face, even if it kills him. Sticking to one lead singer, Richie McDonald, also helps the band create a distinctive vocal identity. As a gift to their fans, Lonestar has included a special acoustic version of their #1 hit "Everything's Changed" as the final track, but LONELY GRILL's 11 new cuts more than stand up to that proven hit. History Of The Grateful Dead Vol.1 (Bear's Choice - Expanded And Remastered)
Full title: History Of The Grateful Dead Vol. 1: Bear's Choice. The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, organ, percussion); Phil Lesh (bass); Bill Kreutzmann, MickeyHart (drums). Additional personnel: Bill Graham (spoken vocals). Recorded live at Bill Graham's Fillmore East, New York on February 13 and 14, 1970. Released July 13, 1973; the Grateful Dead's ninth album. The album was mastered directly from Bear's stereo recordings. CD mastered by Joe Gastwirt. Includes liner notes by Bear. Released in July of 1973, BEAR'S CHOICE was the third of three consecutive live releases by the Dead. Culled from two legendary (among Deadheads anyway) concerts at the fabled Fillmore East in 1970, it is perhaps their most rustic album: the Dead unplugged. The band sounds genuinely off-hand, with spontaneous stage patter adding to the low-key ambiance. They sound like a bunch of guys just hanging out and making music. The set consists of seven songs, six of them covers. The fiery blues singing of Ron "Pigpen" McKernan is the highlight here. He sings on the 18-minute workout of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning," as well as Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle," which was later a hit for the Black Crowes. The earnest, country-tinged vocals of Bob Weir are featured on the Everly Brothers' "Wake Up Little Susie" and the plaintive folk number "Dark Hollow." Jerry Garcia takes an uncharacteristically low-key role here; but he does sing the spooky Appalachian ballad "All Around this World" and a moving rendition of the one Dead-penned song here, the elegiac "Black Peter." Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The [SACD]
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Solo performer: Bob Dylan (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica). Engineers: Stan Tonkel, Peter Dauria, George Kneurr. Recorded in Columbia Sound Studios, New York, New York in 1963. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With this album Dylan emerged from the cloak of Woody Guthrie and proclaimed his own uniquetalent. No longer detached--the set was originally entitled BOB DYLAN'S BLUES--he personalized his songs, famously rejecting four from the final draft in favor of others reflecting his newer muse. Protest songs were given a wider resonance--the text of "Masters Of War" remains sadly relevant decades later--while his love songs are haunting but universal statements. Dylan injected black humor into the talking blues and railed against injustice in all forms, with a perception encompassing the anger of a generation. FREEWHEELIN' is a landmark in the development of folk and pop music. SKU: 1086947
