Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (The Motion Picture Soundtrack - 30th Anniversary Special Edition)
The LIMITED edition of ZIGGY STARDUST: THE MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK includes silk screen printed clear o-card, poster, and mock ticket. Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars: David Bowie (vocals); Mick Ronson (guitar); Trevor Bolder (bass); Mick Woodmansey (drums). Recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, England. Includes liner notes by D.A. Pennebaker. Digitally remastered by Tony Visconti. When David Bowie killed off his fatalistic rock-star character Ziggy Stardust, he also announced his retirement from live performance. His "final" concert was filmed and the soundtrack sat on a shelf for a decade before its release in 1983. ZIGGY STARDUST -THE MOTION PICTURE is an interesting audio snapshot that represents the Ziggy Stardust arc and incorporates a few different facets of Bowie's career up to that point. Starting with the ragged, garage-rock meter of "Hang on to Yourself," Bowie introduces his beloved alien ("Ziggy Stardust"), and flirts with his flamboyant side (the medley of "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud/All The Young Dudes/Oh! You Pretty Things"). From here, Ziggy's transition ("Changes") into messianic figure takes him through a host of rock-star realities ("Let's Spend The Night Together," "White Light/White Heat") before his meteoric rise gets snuffed out in a flash ("Rock 'N' Roll Suicide.") Throughout this performance, it's easy to see how Bowie's combination of solid rock & roll aesthetics and over-the-top theatricality eventually spawned and shaped everything from glam-rock to later developments such as punkand Madonna. One of Bowie's best and more underrated live performances. SKU: 1080227

Trinity (Past Present And Future) [PA]
Slum Village: T3, Baatin, Elzhi. Additional personnel: Dwele, T. Banks (rap vocals); DJ Dez (turntables). Producers include: Al "T3" Altman, Waajeed O'Bryant, Curtis "Nottyhead" Cross, Harrlem Riggins, Jay Dilla. Detroit has more to offer to the hip-hop world than the obstreperous likes of Eminem, as proven by the consistently inventive output of the progressive, underground hip-hop trio Slum Village. In the past, the group's credibility leaned heavily on the production abilities of Jay Dee, one of the most celebrated beatmeisters to rise up from the Detroit underground and be embraced by mainstream artists on a national level. Consequently, Slum Village might be forgiven for a certain degree of creative downturn after Dee's exit. The amazing thing is that thereis none. With true team spirit, T3 takes his erstwhile partner's production mantle with almost shockingly successful results on several tracks. For those who'd grown enamored of SV's hypnotic, moody, endlessly surprising sound, TRINITY picks up admirably where the group's Jay Dee-era work left off. Get It On...tonite
Personnel: Montell Jordan (vocals, strings, programming); Lockdown, Mike Melnick, Tyler Parris (vocals); Danny "Jazz The Man" Nixon (various instruments, programming, background vocals); "Shep" Crawford (various instruments, programming); Jay Williams, Jimmy "Professor Funk" Russell, Jeffrey Piergeorge (guitar); Ralph Kearns (keyboards); JoJo Brim (programming, background vocals); Kevin "KD" Davis (programming); Kimmie Morrow, Shae Jones, Eritza Laues, The Fullfilment Choir, Pamela Olivia, Brian Palmer, Dee Dee Foster, Estee Davis, Antoine Wilson, Maisha Dunn, De'Andrea Foster, Arthur Ray Lee Jr. (background vocals). Producers include: "Shep' Crawford, Montell Jordan, Danny "Jazz The Man" Nixon, JoJp Brim, Ralph Kearns. Engineers include: Anne "Auntie Mae" Catalano, Jamie Seyberth, Mike Melnick. The six-foot-something R&B heartthrob is back with his latest, GET IT ON...TONITE. Def Soul's Montell Jordan continues to sweet talk the ladies with his blend of R&B and hip-hop. On his fourth album, he gives R&B new life by bringing that ol' mature sound back to the genre. The album contains a nice balance, with one side dedicated tothe dance floor and the other side all about the slow jam. The title track is Montell at his best, with production that defies beats that were current in R&B at the time of the CD's release. Guest artists are kept to a minimum, keeping the album focused solely on Montell. SKU: 5064699

3 Years, 5 Months And 2 Days In The Life Of...
Arrested Development: Speech, Headliner, AerleTaree, Montsho Eshe, Rasa Don, Baba Oje. Additional personnel: Dionne Farris, Sister Paulette, Cinque (vocals); Brother Larry (guitar); Larry Jackson (saxophone); Ramsey Lewis (keyboards). Hip-hop found itself at a crossroads in the early '90s. Its pop dominance was now unquestioned, but in order to progress, the genre needed a stylistic and cultural alternative to the shoot-em-up nihilism and vacuous balladry which threatened to stunt its growth. Enter Arrested Development. With 3 YEARS, 5 MONTHS AND 2 DAYS IN THE LIFE OF..., the group gave hip-hop the intellectual and spiritual shot in the arm which it needed, and in the process, brought the genre to a whole new audience. Turning rap's anger into pride, Arrested Development stressed the beauty and richness of the African and, more specifically, the African-American tradition. Never blindly optimistic, but ever hopeful, 3 YEARS preached self-empowerment and awareness, holding an unflattering mirror up to certain destructive aspects of society. The album spawned several pop hits, including "Mr. Wendel," a smart, touching portrayal of homelessness. Group leader Speech forgoes the threats and crotch-grabbing so prevalent in rap at the time to espouse positivity and growth in such lessons in humanity as "Tennessee." In the busy, insightful "People Everyday," Speech takes on the narrow-mindedness and violence inherent in his own culture. SKU: 1003289

Belle (guitar); Wally Badarou, Andrew Richards (keyboards); Sly Dunbar (synthesizer, drums); Louis Jardim (bass, percussion, background vocals); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Uzziah "Sticky" Thompson (percussion); The Wall Of Men, Glenn Gregory, John Sinclair, Gary Maughan, The Ambrosian Singers. Wash Them Go Go: Ju Ju (drums); Little Beats, Shorty Tim (percussion). The Strictly Unreasonable Zang Tuum Tumb Big Beat Colossus includes: Jamie Talbert (alto saxophone); John Thirkel, Guy Barker, Stuart Brook (trumpet); Pete Beachill (trombone); Geoff Perkins (bass trombone); Frank Ricotti (percussion). Producers: Chris Blackwell, Alex Sadkin, Trevor Horn. Compilation producers: Bill Levenson, Jerry Rappaport, Trevor Wyatt. Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. Includes 2 previously unreleased tracks, 4 previously unreleased versions of her hits, and 16 songs appearing for the first time on CD. A comprehensive collection of Jones' post-disco work, most of it recorded between 1980 and 1982 in Nassau, Bahamas, with a truly remarkable studio band, including the legendaryreggae rhythm team of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, along with Marianne Faithful collaborator Barry Reynolds on guitar. The songs--which run the gamut from Smokey Robinson to Chrissie Hynde to Johnny Cash--are generally arranged in an innovative, ahead-of-their-time way (echoey yet spare, with lots of deep bass) that owes a bit to dub and in any case provides a perfect backdrop for Jones' Queen of the Undead vocals. Stephen Stills
Personnel includes: Stephen Stills, Jimi Hendrix, Fuzzy Samuels, David Crosby, Dallas Taylor, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash, Rita Coolidge, John Sebastian. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. This outstanding solo debut came at a particularlysuccessful and creative time for Stills. In the space of a couple of years he made two solo albums, released the superb Manassas double album and was part of CSNY. He was also living in Surrey, England, which explains the appearance of many UK-based musicians, from Eric Clapton to Ringo Starr and even Jimi Hendrix. This varied set shows Stills to be precociously talented as he tackled Memphis soul, folk, blues, rock and goodtime pop with the still fresh-sounding 'Love The One You're With'. Equally arresting is 'Black Queen', allegedly recorded after Stills had downed a bottle of tequila, and was 'drunk as a skunk'. SKU: 1003849

Surfing On Sine Waves
Polygon Window: Richard D. James (programming). Recorded at Llanerlog Studios, Cornwall, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Hiding behind the Polygon Window is none other than the Aphex Twin himself, Richard D. James. SURFING was among the first of James' records to surface and, as another mathe-magical feat of exquisite melodic proportions and rhythmic contortions, it reinforced the statement of the pivotal ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE compilation. James' later output can be willfully difficult, but the surprisingly friendly SURFING stands as one of the most enduring (and endearing) of the post-AI works. PerhapsJames intended Polygon Window as a less antagonistic alter ego for his abrasive Caustic Window persona. "Quoth" stomps and snorts like a bucking bronco, thrashing through a series of metallic rhythm loops, but the music is less intimidating than it is fascinating. James concentrates on melodic exposition rather than rhythmic complexity, filling such tracks as "Polygon Window," "If It Really Is Me," and "Quixote" with tuneful turns and brooding contrapuntal inventions. Not that the programming isn't as devilishly clever as ever. But much of SURFING bypasses James' abstruse percussive tangles for more conventional techno-grounded beats, aping the build-up-and-release tactic of high-NRG dance fare. "Audax Powder" even echoes The KLF's "What Time Is Love?" but warps the familiar chords into something strange and Aphex-esque. SKU: 1007411

Engineers include: "Doc" Siegel, James Hilton, Tom May. Producers include: Charles Greene, Brian Stone, Amhet Ertegun, Steven Stills, Neil Young. Compilation producer: Buffalo Springfield. Recorded between June 1966 & April 1968. Includes liner notes by Ken Voila. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology by Tim Mulligan (Redwood Digital). One of the most beloved folk-rock bands of the '60s, Buffalo Springfield are knownthese days primarily for their hit "For What It's Worth," but in their brief heyday they were one of the most important groups around. The fact that they numbered among their members Neil Young and Stephen Stills doesn't hurt their seminal status any, but the songs themselves are virtually indestructible. From the aforementioned non-protest anthem to the sunny, melodic "Bluebird" and the burning psychedelia of "Mr. Soul," these guys were at the vanguard of so many '60s pop styles it's scary. This long-awaited, much-embraced box includes an abundance of previously unreleased tracks (demos, outtakes, even some never-before-heard compositions) that make it a must for hardcore fans. And any fan of '60s rock who's taken by the considerable charms of the aforementioned tunes is probably already well on their way to becoming a hardcore fan. SKU: 1062087

Chill Out
Black Uhuru: Michael Rose (vocals); Duckie Simpson, Puma Jones (background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Wally Badarou (synthesizer, vocoder); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums). Recorded at Channel One Studio, Kingston, Jamaica and Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. Clearly one of Black Uhuru's most essential offerings, CHILL OUT is also required listening for fans of early-80s roots reggae as a whole. While the album may not have quite the notoriety of ANTHEM, it still serve up a solid nine cuts of this seminal Black Uhuru lineup (Michael Rose, Duckie Simpson, and Puma Jones with Sly & Robbie). The title track is the most memorable, but Rose can handle a hook like no one else, and proves it on "Darkness" ("Darkness seems to grow upon the world"), "Right Stuff" (with some interesting vocoder work), and "Mondays" (a cut that eclipses the title track in intensity, despite its slow, rolling rhythms). While the disc clocks in at under 40 minutes, it's full of some great, guitar-driven roots reggae. CHILL OUT serves as perhaps the quintessential example of the pure, sociallyconscious Rasta sound of the era. SKU: 1085435

I Won't Cry
I WON'T CRY is collection of Johnny Adams' first released solo recordings, circa 1959-1963, for New Orleans' Ric & Ron labels. Personnel includes: Johnny Adams (vocals); Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack (Farfisa). The Gondoliers include: Edgar Blanchard (guitar). Producers: Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack, Joe Ruffino, Eddie Bo. Reissue producer: Jeff Hannusch. Includes liner notes by Jeff Hannusch. Seminal early work by one of the real unheralded masters of R&B and soul. Adams, whose vocal style suggests Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye without actually sounding like eitherone of them, recorded these songs--primarily pleading soul ballads--in New Orleans between 1959 and 1963, and most of them are either written or produced by Dr. John, a.k.a. Mac Rebennack. They're very much of their time and place, which is to say if you've ever heard Ernie K. Doe ("Mother in Law") or Chris Kenner ("I Like It Like That"), you'll have an idea what they sound like; in fact, one of the best tracks here is a cover of Kenner's "Life Is a Struggle." In any event, even at this early stage Adams is a supremely confident artist, with a judiciously used falsetto that's guaranteed to raise the hairs on the back of your neck. SKU: 4112749

Slight Case Of Overbombing, A (Greatest Hits Vol.1)
Sisters Of Mercy: Patricia Morrison (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Andrew Eldritch (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, programming); Wayne Hussey, Tony James (guitar, background vocals); Tim Bricheno, Andreas Bruhn, Craig Adams (guitar); Gary Marx (bass). Additional personnel: Terry Nunn, Ofra Haza. Drawn from the band's voluminous singles catalogue, A SLIGHT CASE OF OVERBOMBING is a Sisters Of Mercy greatest hits package arranged in reverse chronological order that also highlights the band's first studio recordings since the VISION THING album. It includes all three collaborations with Jim Steinman--"Dominion / Mother Russia," "This Corrosion," and "More." The latter is a masterpiece of bombast. The new tracks are "Under the Gun" and "Temple of Love (1992)." The first, a duet with ex-Berlinvocalist Terri Nunn, is a semi-successful attempt to duplicate the sound of the Steinman collaborations. The second cut, a re-recording of the Sisters' seminal 1983 single "Temple of Love" in the light of the band's harder, more metallic sound, is a good idea. Adding the impressive vocal acrobatics of Yemenite singer Ofra Haza is a stroke of genius. A SLIGHT CASE OF OVERBOMBING is a fine place to enter the world of the Sisters. SKU: 1011202

Personnel: Joe Cocker (vocals); Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); Johnny Lee Schell (electric guitar); Tony Joe White (electric guitar, harmonica); Greg Leisz (dobro); Sid Page, Peter Kent (violin); Evan Wilson, Denyse Buffum (viola); Rudy Stein (cello); Suzy Katayama (cello, accordion); Randy Newman (piano); Chris Stainton(piano, Wurlitzer piano); Billy Preston (Hammond B-3 organ); Jamie Muhoberac (Hammond B-3, synthesizer); Darryl Jones, James "Hutch" Hutchinson (bass); Kenny Aronoff, Jim Keltner (drums, percussion); Joe Porcaro (percussion); Merry Clayton, Portia Griffin, Myrna Smith, Maxine Sharp (background vocals). Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California. As the title implies, this album by the veteran British R&B belter forsakes slick, electronic studio sheen in favor of a simpler acoustic approach. Basically we're talking Cocker Unplugged. Squarely aimed at the boomers that are Cocker's prime demographic, ORGANIC features stripped-down versions of some of his biggest hits, including "You Are So Beautiful," "Delta Lady," and "You Can Leave Your Hat On," and new versions of songs by boomer icons like Bob Dylan ("Dignity") and Van Morrison ("Into The Mystic"). It's a marketing man's dream. Don Was, naturally, produced it. SKU: 1000936

December's Children (And Everybody's) [SACD] [Remastered]
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, harmonica); Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica, keyboards); Keith Richards (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jack Nitzsche (keyboards, percussion); Ian Stewart (keyboards, marimba, percussion); J.W. Alexander (percussion). Recorded in Hollywood, California, Chicago, Illinois and London, England. DECEMBER'S CHILDREN marked a crucial point in the Stones' development. The band was beginning to move away from its blues/R&B roots toward something more uniquely its own. Certainly those roots were far from absent in the songs composed for this album, and the Stones still cover their share of the masters here (Chuck Berry, Arthur Alexander, Hank Snow), but something new was afoot. The aching ballad "As Tears Go By," complete with baroque orchestration, heralded a new direction in the Stones' songwriting. Similarly, the folk-rockish strains of "The Singer Not The Song" hint at previously uncharted directions. Perhaps the most crucial track here is "Get Off My Cloud, which, while it incorporates the band's rootsy influences, is possessed of a decidedly modern power that the Stones were only beginning to learn to harness. This was the beginning of a style more specific than pop, blues, or rock & roll. DECEMBER'S CHILDREN may be seen as the beginning of what can only be defined as Rolling Stones music.
