Unchain My Heart
Personnel: Joe Cocker, PhoebeSnow, Renee Geyer (vocals); Dan Hartman (guitar, keyboards, percussion, tambourine, background vocals); Phil Grande (guitar); Ric Cunningham (alto saxophone); Lawrence Feldman (tenor saxophone); Clarence Clemons (saxophone); Jeff Levine (piano, organ, keyboards); Greg Johnson (piano, organ); Robby Kilgore (keyboards); T.M. Stevens (bass); David Beal (drums); Sammy Figueroa (percussion); Tawatha Agee, Vaneese Thomas, Benny Diggs, B.J. Nelson, Jayne Ann Lang, Maxine Green, Janice Singleton (background vocals). The Uptown Horns: Arno Hecht, Crispin Cioe, Robert Funk, "Hollywood" Paul Litteral (horns). Recorded at The House Of Music, West Orange, New Jersey. This wasn't exactly a comeback album, but it did boost Joe Cocker's veteran blues profile quite a bit. The title song, which gave Cocker the excuse to do his best Ray Charles imitation, was a hit (no doubt due, in part, to Clarence Clemmon's supporting saxophone work), and "A Woman Loves a Man" was featured prominently on the soundtrack to Kevin Costner's baseball flick BULL DURHAM. Much of the rest of the album is very slick and very '80s--the backing track for "Trust in Me" would have been right at home on a John Waite album--but the songs are generally tuneful and Cocker sings the pants off of all of them, in particular the attractively Stones/Faces derived "Satisfied." Ramones, The (Remastered And Expanded)
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass); Tommy Ramone (drums). Producers: Craig Leon, T. Erdelyi, Marty Thau. Reissue producers: Gary Stewart, Bill Inglot. Engineers: Rob Freeman, Jack Malken, Don Hunerburg. Recorded at Plaza Sound, Radio City Music Hall, New York, New York and 914 Studios, Blauvelt, New York. Includes liner notes by Donna Gaines and Arturo Vega. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (Digiprep). The Ramones' self-titled debut is a justifiably adored album--not just one of the best albums to come out of the initial New York punk explosion of the mid-'70s, but one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time. RAMONES is one of those rare records where there is not a single weak or out-of-place song. Changeups like the bubblegummy near-ballad "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and the uncharacteristically harsh "53rd and 3rd" (an unsentimental song about Dee Dee Ramone's days as a teenage hustler) vary the album's sound and mood more than its detractors (andeven some of its fans) maintain. The 2001 reissue adds eight bonus tracks. Most are culled from early demos, including two songs, "I Can't Be" and "I Don't Wanna Be Learned/I Don't Wanna Be Tamed," that were never officially recorded, and two others, "You Should Never Have Opened That Door" and "I Don't Care," which eventually appeared on their second and third albums respectively. None of the demos are particularly different from the final recordings, but, interestingly, they tend to be a little slower and poppier-sounding. The cleaner-sounding, more trebly single mix of "Blitzkrieg Bop" closes the package. SKU: 1061155

Retrospective
Red House Painters: Mark Kozelek (vocals); Gorden Mack (guitar); Jerry Vessel (bass); Anthony Koutsos (drums). Includes liner notes by Rob O' Condor. Mark Kozelek has a knack for writing songs that capture the fading, sepia-tinted hope of adolescence with so much insight that they can bephysically painful to hear. Originally recording for the ultra-hip English 4AD label, his Red House Painters were often too introspective for mainstream commercial acceptance. But the songs collected on RETROSPECTIVE, a two-disc collection of LP tracks, demos, live versions, and outtakes dating from the band's tenure with the label, more than make the case for Kozelek as one of the great singer/songwriters of his generation. The first disc covers LP tracks and includes such jaw-droppers as "Grace Cathedral Park," "New Jersey," "Medicine Bottle," Kozelek's painful ode to dying love, and "Michael," a gorgeous song about the memory of an old friend. The second disc consists of rarities. Standouts include the sinewy and uneasy "Waterkill," an in-studio radio show version of "Mistress," and an extraordinary live solo rendition of "Japanese To English" that instills such lyrics as "a million miles away from home / and 15 from a pay phone" with even more isolation into than one might have thought possible. Do yourself a favor and buy RETROSPECTIVE. You owe this band your support. SKU: 1061044

Fifth album from perhaps the world's only megastar of electronic music follows 2002's massive-selling '18'. Produced once again in his home, with Moby himself playing almost all the instruments, this remains in much the same vein as 'Play' and '18', but this time features none of the vocal samples whichmade those records infamous - most of the vocals are his own. New York Sessions 1967
BROWN EYED BEGINNINGS is a two-disc set that features material from Van Morrison's first solo sessions for Bang Records initially released as BLOWIN' YOUR MIND, and later as THE BANG MASTERS. The first disc includes the familiar tunes from those recordings, while the second consists of an untitled jam. Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar); Eric Gale, Hugh McCracken, Al Gorgoni, Donald Thomas (guitar); Artie Kaplan, Seldon Powell (flute, saxophone); Artie Butler, Paul Griffin (keyboards); George Devins (vibraphone, percussion); Bob Bushnell, Russell Savakas (bass); Herbie Lovelle (drums); Jeff Barry (tambourine, background vocals). The Sweet Inspirations: Cissy Houston, Dee Dee Warwick, Myrna Smith (background vocals). Recorded at A&R & Century Sounds, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Carlton P. Sandercock. BROWN EYED BEGINNINGS is essentially THE BANG MASTERS(which includes all the songs Morrison recorded on his first solo trip into the studio with American producer Bert Berns, plus an extra disc of strange, one-minute tunes. While the first disc, which comprises the Bang sessions proper, shows Morrison to be an already-formidable progressive blues/R&B artist, the second disc demonstrates that he was also quite the willful chap, even as early as 1967. Embroiled in legal/contractual disputes with Berns over the amount of material Morrison owed Bang, the singer recorded an album's worth of short, commercially unusable nonsense cuts. These make up disc number two of BROWN EYED BEGINNINGS, and while notable mostly for their novelty value, they are early evidence that Morrison was a man to be reckoned with. SKU: 1008260

Mahoney's Last Stand
Contains 5 bonus tracks. Personnel: Ron Wood (vocals, guitar, harmonica, bass, percussion); Ronnie Lane (vocals, guitar, banjo, bass, percussion); Bruce Rowlands (vocals, drums); Glyn Johns, Billy Nichols (vocals); Pete Townshend (guitar, percussion); Rick Grech (violin, bass, drums); Bobby Keys (tenor saxophone, brass); Jim Price (baritone saxophone, brass); Ian McLagan (piano, harmonium); Ian Stewart (piano); Benny Gallagher (bass); Kenney Jones (drums); Micky Waller (percussion). Recorded in 1972. Includes liner notes by Terry Rawlings & Carlton P. Sandercock-Rout. Only in the 70's could a 'motion picture soundtrack' be made for a non-existent movie! The then-newly appointed Rolling Stones guitarist decided to try something a little different on his third solo release overall, so he rounded up yet another all star cast of rockers - something Wood seems inclined to do with eachsolo album. Present were some of his ex-bandmates in the Faces (Ronnie Lane, Kenny Jones, Ian McLagan), as well as such other rock notables as Rick Grech (ex-Blind Faith) and a few Stones sidemen (pianist Ian Stewart and horn-blowers Jim Price and Bobby Keys). Comprised of both instrumentals and actual songs, MAHONEY'S LAST STAND remains the most curious of Wood's solo releases. SKU: 6234863

Odessa
2 LPs on 1 CD. The Bee Gees: Barry Gibb (vocals, guitar); Maurice Gibb (vocals, piano, organ, bass); Robin Gibb (vocals). Recorded at IBC Studios, London, England. ODESSA stands as one of the great British pop albums of the '60s, right up alongside such tours de force as SGT. PEPPER, ODYSSEY AND ORACLE, and S.F. SORROW. In fact, while it's full of elegant baroque pop gems, ODESSA's range even extends beyond its aforementioned peers, delving over the course of its double-length into everything from Gospel to country. Songs like "Melody Fair" employ all the pop smarts the Gibbs earned early in their career and apply them to a much more sophisticated scope of song structure. The seven minute-plus title song is a centerpiece here, an epic account of a ship gone astray, full of changes in texture, tempoand dynamics, veering dangerously close to artsong, but (as is part of the Bee Gees' magic) always staying on the right side of infectiousness. Deserter's Songs (+DVD)
Mercury Rev: Jonathan Donahue (vocals, acoustic guitar, chamberlin); Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiack (vocals, guitar, woodwinds); Suzanne Thorpe (flute); Dave Fridmann (piano, Mellotron, bass, background vocals); Adam Snyder (Wurlitzer piano, Mellotron, Hammond B-3 organ); JimmyChambers (harpsichord, clavinet, drums). Additional personnel: Amy Helm, Marie Spinosa, Mary Gavazzi Fridmann (vocals); Garrett James Uhlenbrock (slide guitar); Rachel Handman (violin); Garth Hudson (alto & tenor saxophones); Matt Jordan (flugelhorn); Jim Burgess (trombone); Aaron Hurwitz (piano); Scott Pettito (acoustic & electric basses); Jeff Mercel, Levon Helm (drums); Joel Eckhouse (bowed saw). Engineers include: Dave Fridmann, Jonathan Donahue, Aaron Hurwitz. A touching, majestic gem of a record, DESERTER'S SONGS raises the bar not just for Mercury Rev themselves, but orchestrated pop in general. There's a timelessness to both the compositions and the arrangements here. Grand sonic visions are realized with horns, keyboards, strings, even a bowed saw. No matter how big the sound gets, though, it's all carefully controlled, and the cinematic scope enhances the songs, rather than obscuring them. Simple--but never blunt--lyrics benefit from an infectious melodicism that speaks to the pop songcraft skills Mercury Rev has mastered. The sweeping scale of DESERTER'S SONGS never denies the small, intimate pleasures that pop up from song to song, as the band combines psychedelia, '60s pop, Flaming Lips-ish indie rock and a homey folk-rock sound (the Band's Garth Hudson and Levon Helm even appear here) for a masterpiece of epic proportions. Phenomenon
UFO: Phil Mogg (vocals); Michael Schenker (guitar); Pete Way (bass); Andy Parker (drums). Recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England. Up until their 1974 album, PHENOMENON, England's UFO had issued several albums that did little to expand their cult fan base at home, let alone worldwide. But through an early-'70s tour with German metallists the Scorpions, they finally found the missing piece to the puzzle--guitar wizard Michael Schenker. UFO convinced Schenker to leave the Scorpions (which wasn't an easy task, since his older brother Rudolf was a member), and their '74 release sounds like a band reborn. Schenker's stellar playing seems to have lit a fire under the compositions, many of which rank amongst UFO's all-time best--namely the soon-to-be live show-stoppers "Doctor Doctor," and "RockBottom" (as evidenced on UFO's classic STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT live set). PHENOMENON set the stage perfectly for such future hit UFO releases as LIGHTS OUT and OBSESSION. SKU: 1028776

Just One Night
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Albert Lee (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Dave Markee (bass); Henry Spinetti (drums). Recorded live at The Budokan Theatre, Tokyo, Japan in December 1979. All tracks are digitally remastered. In December 1979, Eric Clapton touredJapan, making a stop at Tokyo's Budokan, where the results were taped and released as the double-album JUST ONE NIGHT. For this tour, Clapton's back-up band included regular Joe Cocker keyboardist Chris Stainton and famed English country picker Albert Lee. The set list ignored any history of the legendary guitarist's work as a band member, instead focusing on either solo material or blues favorites. Going beyond familiar numbers such as "Tulsa Time" and "Wonderful Tonight," EC dug deep for lesser-known nuggets like "If I Don't Be There By Morning" and "All Our Past Times," off THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD. Clapton's first love remained the blues and its derivatives, so he made sure to pay tribute by covering a number of artists including Maceo Merriweather ("Worried Life Blues"), Otis Rush ("Double Trouble"), J.J. Cale ("After Midnight," "Cocaine") and Robert Johnson ("Rambling On My Mind.") Most importantly, Clapton introduced a seven minute-plus reading of "Further On Up The Road," a song that became one of his live staples. SKU: 5046677

All Hail The Queen
Producers include: Prince Paul, D.J. Mark The 45 King, Louis "Louie Louie" Vega, Daddy-O, KRS-One. Engineers include: Al Watts, Shane "The Doctor" Faber, Bob Coulter. Recorded at Calliope Productions, Island Media, Greene Street, Studio 1212, and Power Play Productions, New York, New York. Emerging from East Orange, NJ in the days when hip-hop gear meant kente cloth & afrika medallions aand fellow Native Tongues were achieving cross-over success on "Yo! MTV Raps" (guest appearances from De La Soul & Monie Love show a strong Native Tongues connection which eventually faded as the Queen placed more focus on developing her own Flavor Unit posse), Latifah added a more explicit afro-centric edge to the common sense feminism pioneered by MC Lyte and Roxanne Shante. She also added a more eclectic cross-section of sounds to their palette of samples. After briefly providing beat-box for the all-girl crew Ladies Fresh, she made her name as a solo artist with the reggae hook of "Wrath of MyMadness" in 1988. While overall her debut LP relies on the sounds of break-beat legend Mark The 45 King, exceptions to the rule include a harder edged track contributed by KRS-ONE ("Evil That Men Do"), heavy rockers-style reggae laced by Daddy-O of Stetsasonic ("The Pros"), and a token house track ("Come Into My House"). Occasionally dated, ALL HAIL THE QUEEN nevertheless contains enough gems ("Latifah's Law," "Ladies First," "Wrath Of My Madness") to stand alongside any classic LP of its era. SKU: 1084559

Mustt Mustt
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is a Qawwali singer of Pakistani devotional songs; this recording was a departure for him, a collaboration with artists from many different disciplines. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is widely acknowledged as the greatest master of qawwali music, the devotional music of the Sufis. Having popularized thisbeautiful and inspirational music with a worldwide audience, he began traversing a whole new musical territory towards the end of his life. MUSTT MUSTT is probably the singer's most successful endeavor at reaching out beyond the boundaries of traditional qawwali. The title track draws upon various devotional lyrics about a particular Sufi saint which Nusrat uses as a springboard for a melodically compelling vocal solo; in contrast, "Tery Bina" is a romantic qawwali song. Use of drum programming (by Peter Gabriel), synthesizers, and other modern instrumentation makes for a compelling listen. Overall, MUSTT MUSTT has a feel akin to some of Gabriel's own attempts at blending Western sounds with qawwali. SKU: 1002123

Live Etc
This double-length album is the definitive live document of Radio Gnome Trilogy-era Gong, from 1973 through 1975. While it captures the more visceral live performances of this vital period in the space/art/jazz-rock band's career, it also provides an intriguing look at the way the band changed and developed over a relatively short period of time. The earliest recordings find the band still holding onto some of the CAMEMBERT ELECTRIQUE material and pursuing a rockier, more riff-oriented sound full of stoned whimsy. The 1974 cuts show the band in a much more sophisticated, jazzy mode, with fleet-fingered solos and complex passages abounding. By 1975, the hippie contingent had left the band, and in the absence of founder/leader Daevid Allen, the group plunged headlong into jazz-rock fusion territory, but they're heard here still performing the final Allen-era compositions. Each of thesedevelopments is a delight to hear in this energized live context. SKU: 5046910

Bless Its Pointed Little Head (Live)
Jefferson Airplane: Paul Kantner (vocals, guitar); Grace Slick, Marty Balin (vocals); Jorma Kaukonen (guitar); Jack Casady (bass guitar); Spencer Dryden (drums). Liner Note Author: Jeff Tamarkin. Recording information: Fillmore East, New York, New York(11/28/1968 - 11/30/1969); Fillmore West, San Francisco, California (10/24/1968 - 10/26/1968). These 1968 live recordings from the Filmore East and West are the definitive live document of San Francisco's premier psychedelic group. 1968 was prime time for the Airplane, as the instrumental interplay between Kantner, Casady and Kaukonen had really begun to gel. So too had the interaction between lead vocalists Grace Slick and Marty Balin reached near-telepathic heights, and it can all be heard here. From the mind-melting proto-acid-rock of "Somebody to Love" to ribald, bluesy brashness of "Plastic Fantastic Lover," this is the Airplane in full flight. POINTED HEAD also makes it plain that the early Airplane had a special way with cover tunes. Folk god Fred Neil's "Other Side of This Life" gets a furiously rocking revision, and Donovan's "Fat Angel" is stretched out to encompass some wonderfully trippy jamming. BLESS ITS POINTED LITTLE HEAD is a candid but flattering photo of this seminal American band. SKU: 6557851

Don't Try This At Home
Personnel: Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone, synthesizer); Mark O'Connor (violin); Jim Beard (piano, synthesizer); Don Grolnick, Herbie Hancock, Joey Calderazzo (piano); Mike Stern (guitar); Charlie Haden (acoustic bass); Jeff Andrews (fretless electric bass); Jack DeJohnette, Adam Nussbaum, Peter Erskine (drums); Judd Miller (programming). 1987's DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME is Michael Brecker's second album as a leader following nearly two decades as an in-demand session musician (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, etc.) and one-half of the Brecker Brothers with his trumpeter brother Randy. It's basically a continuation and refinement of ideas first explored on 1986's MICHAEL BRECKER. Brecker plays more tenor sax on this album, and his experiments with MIDI synthesizers are better integrated into the whole of the largely acoustic arrangements. Rather than the stable group that backed him on his debut, the cast of DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME reads like a Who's Who of post-bop fusion: Herbie Hancock (playing acoustic piano, not synth), acoustic bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Jack DeJohnette all make impressive showings in Brecker's largely self-composed and usually quite memorabletunes. New Beginnings
Tracy's Band: Tracy Chapman (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, organ); Adam Levy (electric guitar, background vocals); Andy Stoller (bass, tamboura, background vocals); Rock Deadrick (drums, percussion, background vocals); Glenys Rogers (percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Lili Haydn (violin); Cameron Stone (cello); Eric Rigler (Scottish small-pipes, whistle); Scott Roewe (didgeridoo); John Thomas (piano); Phil Shenale (keyboards). Recorded at The Site, San Rafael, California; NRG Studio, North Hollywood, California; Scream Studio, Studio City, California. All songs written by Tracy Chapman. "Give Me One Reason" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Tracy Chapman earned four additional Grammy nominations for NEW BEGINNING. "Give Me One Reason" was nominated for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, and the album was nominated for Best Pop Album. What made Tracy Chapman's self-titled 1988 debut significant was her ability to bring the troubling stories of America's underbelly to an audience mostly removed from such problems, but eager to listen. Her supremely crafted songs quickly became anthems, making her the first popular African-American singer-songwriter to reach mega-stardom. Seven years later, Chapman's fourth album, NEW BEGINNING, arrives with new stories, while diving into previously unexplored territory. Chapman's knack for gripping storytelling is most evident on the chilling "Cold Feet," which describes the dangerous choices rational people often make to get ahead. Her protagonist takes only one risk in an otherwise peril-free life, but it turns out to be a fatal one. While we've all heard similar tales, "Cold Feet" forces even the most self-assured listener to examine his/her own decisions. Where NEW BEGINNING differs from her earlier work is Tracy's willingness to turn the microscope on herself. "Heaven's Here On Earth" affords us a glimpse of her spiritual side, while "At This Point In My Life" is Chapman at her most introspective. These songs show us more of Tracy Chapman than we've seen before and, in the tradition of the best singer-songwriters, force usto examine ourselves. SKU: 1003256

Colour And The Shape, The
Foo Fighters: Dave Grohl (vocals, guitar, bass, drums); Pat Smear (guitar); Nate Mendel (bass); William Goldsmith (drums). Additional personnel: Lance Bangs, Chris Bilheimer, Ryan Boesch (handclaps). Recorded at Grand Masters Ltd., Hollywood, California; Bear Creek Studios, Woodinville, Washington; WGNS Studios, Washington, D.C. THE COLOUR & THE SHAPE was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Album. "Monkey Wrench" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Now that Dave Grohl has gotten through the intense scrutiny leveled at the Foo Fighters' debut, this follow-up finds him flexing his creative muscles a little easier. Forgoing the autocratic approach of FOO FIGHTERS, THE COLOUR & SHAPE allows the other members of the band a greater amount of influence, which quickly becomes evident. The punk-pop nuggets outnumber the thrashier moments on this record. Nevertheless, Grohl's time on the D.C. hardcorescene is never far from the creative process, whether it's the first squeals and squawks that pop up around the hooks and screaming vocals of "Hey, Johnny Park" and "My Poor Brain" or the alternating, Nirvana-like dynamics of "Enough Space." Elsewhere, the dreamy pop of "Walking After You" (recorded in one take by Grohl at Washington, D.C. radio station WGNS) and "Up In Arms" rubs shoulders with the Catherine Wheelish sheets of guitar flowing through "My Hero." Sanctuary Within, A
Personnel: David Murray (tenor saxophone); Kahil El'Zabar (vocals, percussion); Tony Overwater (bass); Sunny Murray (drums). A SANCTUARY WITHIN packssome surprises. For one, hearing David Murray work with the master free jazz drummer Sunny Murray in the context of relatively traditional jazz turns out to be an absolute delight. The exotic textures added by Kahil El' Zabar are also new to Murray's canon, although Zabar's playing of the ashiko and earth drum are incorporated seamlessly into the compositions. A SANCTUARY WITHIN, like much of Murray's work from this period, defies categorization. It combines traditional and modern elements of jazz and adds a healthy dose of African rhythms to the mix. Murray himself would argue that categorizing jazz only serves to damage the art form. One is tempted to agree with him when he suggests simply calling it music, and leaving it at that. SKU: 5081348
