The soundtrack to this movie about mistaken identity in continuing education in Southern California is packed with both newer MTV-friendly acts and some welcome reappearances by those of yesteryear, all of whom make this original soundtrack album well worth the price of admission. The Offspring contribute a rarity in the incendiary "Defy You," and those hardy LA perennials Social Distortion, give a live rendition of the "Story of My Life" that has echoes of the Beatles' "In MyLife" as seen through the eyes of fin de siecle LA punk rock kids, and also reminds us that Social Distortion are the ancient ancestors of such latter day punks as Green Day.
No California-based movie worthy of the name would be complete without a Brian Wilson song, and here two are featured, performed by the man himself--"Lay Down Burden," a slice of MOR that still manages to retain some youthful innocence, and "Love and Mercy," a neat little number that both harks back to '60s Beach Boys glory days and reflects on more contemporary concerns. No stranger to film soundtracks (he did the score to the Farrelly Brothers' ME, MYSELF AND IRENE), Pete Yorn contributes "Lose You," a minor slacker classic.

On their own, John Surman and Jack DeJohnette have both established long, storied careers as painterly musicians with expansive natures and an eye towards creating musical space. Together, in the live duo performances captured on INVISIBLE NATURE, they increase their impact by scaling back their sound. Much of the album is simply Surman improvising on sax or clarinet over DeJohnette's highly textured drumming, making the most of the spaces between the notes. Both Surman and DeJohnette know their way around electronics, though, and they often leave the acoustic world behind to explore more atmospheric modes through the use of gentle, moody synthesizers and electronic percussion that gives DeJohnette a wealth of tones at his fingertips. IN SEARCH OF... goes beyond hip-hop, however, conjuring the spirits of 70's R&B and fusing them with '70s rock in a compelling mix that recalls the early-'90s hip-hop experimentation of Basehead's main man Mike Ivey, whose PLAY WITH TOYS remains one of the great undiscovered albums of that decade.

Everything of note is here, including an early Pinetoppers track recorded when Redding was a Little Richard wannabe, and then all the hits from 1963's "These Arms of Mine" to the posthumous 1967 "Dock of the Bay." You also get two terrific duets with Carla Thomas, including the extremely down-home "Tramp," and five cuts from the Monterey PopFestival, with Redding, backed by Booker T. and the MGs, laying the assembled hippies out in the aisles.

Nickelback are arguably the preeminent bastard children of '90s hard rock. On the Canadian band's sophomore effort, the songs will surely appeal to heavy rockers who were introduced to Metallica as shorthaired rock heroes. Simple, crunchy chord progressions (that insinuate themselves quickly into one's memory) are matched by emotionally charged lyrics on SILVER SIDE UP.
"Never Again" is achilling description of domestic abuse from the victim's point of view. The radio-bound track "How You Remind Me" puts a cynical new spin on typical motifs usually reserved for 80's pop-metal balladeers. "Money Bought" addresses sexual exploitation while "Just For" shows how the darker side of love can inspire vengeance. On the whole, SILVER SIDE UP is a promising follow-up to THE STATE, closing with the token acoustic-meets-electric track "Good Times Gone."

SOUND OF CONFUSION, the Spacemen 3's 1986 debut, is the band's most song-oriented album. Grant Green, Larry Young and Elvin Jones, who would later appear together on Young's classic INTO SOMETHIN' session, gel into cohesive trio on Green's rare TALKIN' ABOUT disc from 1964. The three virtuosos burn brightly from the start as they tackle challenging tunes like the opening "Talkin' About J.C." and "Luny Tune." Also, Green's magnificent lyricism is evident on his beautiful reading of the classic "YouDon't Know What Love Is." Two unusual choices for the session, however, are "People," long associated with singer Barbara Streisand, and the Johnny Mercer novelty "I'm an Old Cowhand," both of which get delightful performances here as the trio makes creative use of the well-known melodies. For Green fans, this is a welcome addition to any collection.

Though his refusal to dumb down his raps or resort to sensationalism has prevented Mr. Cheeks from becoming quite as big a star as he perhaps should be, BACK AGAIN! reveals a mature and wiser artist who isn't afraid to search for deeper meaning in the hip-hop philosophy. "Reminisce" is a virtual pop-culture history lesson that points to the increasingly fleeting nature of popularity, given by a man who knows whereof he speaks.
Though he essentially belongs to an earlier era (as appearances byPete Rock and CL Smooth suggest), Mr. Cheeks shows that his skills have only improved with age, and proceeds to spit out one lyrically complex and thoughtful rhyme after another. He also has an old-school veteran's knack for picking choice, no-nonsense samples and using them to create a mood that perfectly fits his rhymes. With BACK AGAIN! Mr. Cheeks reveals himself to be one of the few hip-hop artists who can maintain the sharp edge of gangsta rap while almost completely eschewing the violent aesthetic. Ultimately, this talent gives his work a much more "real" worldview than that propagated by his more famous contemporaries.

A group likeJapan's Pizzicato Five could only exist in the '90s. They venture so far down the postmodernist pop path that they come out the other side, seeming completely guileless and natural. This is the daunting goal realized on INTERNATIONAL PLAYBOY. Singing in Japanese, the ladies of Pizzicato Five come across with the same unaffected citizen-of-the-world cool that made Astrud Gilberto a star decades earlier. The difference is that the Five are working their magic over a genre-busting sonic "mess-thetic" that incorporates '60s pop, hip-hop beats, funk, classical samples and bossa nova guitar riffs, often all in the same song. The potential for overkill in such circumstances looms large, but the Pizzicato Five's pure pop ambition ultimately wins out, making INTERNATIONAL PLAYBOY engaging and endlessly surprising.

In the fall of 1978, Neil Young and Crazy Horse undertook a tour that mixed in songs off of what became RUST NEVER SLEEPS with avariety of older material. The stage set included oversize amps and a road crew cloaked not unlike Star Wars' Jawas, making this tour's distinctions as visual as they were aural. The film and recording of this tour were released as LIVE RUST. The show starts out with Neil Young solo, using acoustic guitar, harmonica and piano to perform the country-folk "Sugar Mountain," "I Am A Child," "After The Gold Rush" and "Comes A Time," the title track of the record released shortly before the tour started.
Unlike his peers, Young embraced the punk scene by writing "My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)," his tribute to Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten, which wrapped up the acoustic section of the show. Other new material debuted on this tour included "Sedan Delivery," "Powderfinger" and "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)." These tunes benefited from the might of Crazy Horse, whose punch provided particularly potent on "Cinnamon Girl," "Like A Hurricane" and the sobering "Tonight's The Night."

Stevie Ray Vaughan is a red-hot talent whose fiery playing and passionate delivery have seen him heralded as the future of the blues, alongside such notables as Robert Cray. For 1986's LIVE ALIVE, three albums into his career, Vaughan added pianist Reese Wynans to the Double Trouble duo of Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, fleshing out an already-potent sound. Originals like"Change It" and "Say What" find Wynan's rollicking playing gilding Vaughan's unusually funky playing, while Wynans and Vaughan play off one another in percolating covers of material by Stevie Wonder ("Superstition") and Hank Ballard ("Look At Little Sister").
As always, Vaughan pays tribute to his elders-Buddy Guy ("Mary Had A Little Lamb"), Howlin' Wolf ("I'm Leaving You [Commit A Crime]"), and Jimi Hendrix ("Voodoo Chile [Slight Return]"). Although this Hendrix version lags a bit, Vaughan's playing is exemplary on the shuffling "Cold Shot" and downright playful on "Love Struck Baby," where older brother Jimmie joins in the fun.

Brought to you under the auspices of no less impressive an entrepreneur than Clive Davis, O-Town seems to be the music mogul's entry in the boy-band sweepstakes. The fivesome's self-titled debut album is so attentive to the details of teen-pop tropes that O-Town almost seems like meta-teen-pop.
This is nowhere so apparent as on the opening track, where the boys name-check Destiny's Child, Janet Jackson, Madonna, and "Jennifer" (it's not clear whether they mean Love Hewitt or Lopez, but that hardly matters) in the space of a 20-second chorus. For lovers of Boyzone, Backstreet Boys, etc., it's all here, from the high-sheen harmonies to the romantic, R&B-laced ballads and pop/hip-hopproduction blend.
