Live At The Atlanta International Pop Festival (July 3rd & 5th 1970) [Digipak]
Full title: Live At The Atlanta International Pop Festival. Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Berry Oakley (vocals, bass); Duane Allman, Dickie Betts (guitar); Thom Doucette (harmonica); Butch Trucks, J. Johnny Johnson (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Johnny Winter (guitar). Recorded live at the Atlanta Internation Pop Festival, Atlanta, Georgia, July 3 & 4, 1970. Includes liner notes by Kirk West. The 1970 AtlantaInternational Pop Festival was one of the first big rock festivals of the decade, beating out the Isle of Wight by over a month. It was also home turf for the Allman Brothers, who were invited to play the opening and closing sets of the three-day event. In retrospect, it's interesting to note how--despite their penchant for extended jams--the Allmans were somewhat at odds with the flower-child ethic of the day; after the MC delivers a classic hippie/stoner intro, the tough, raw opening strains of "Statesboro Blues" come off as delightfully incongruous. Nevertheless, the band's improvisational blues-rock majesty made them a crowd-pleaser. It's easy to see why; the level of energy (and musicianship) here equals, if not surpasses their legendary live Fillmore East recordings from the following year, which showcase much of the same material. Dickey Betts and Duane Allman's guitars play ably against Greg Allman's thick organ voicings and the percolating polyrhythms of drummers Butch Trucks and J. Johnny Johnson. Between-song announcements of a rain delay and the opening of the gates to non-paying fans reinforce the Woodstock-era vibe, making this two-disc set effective as both a musical and historical document. Avant Garde, The
Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano & tenor saxophones); Don Cherry (trumpet); Charlie Haden, Percy Heath (acoustic bass); Ed Blackwell (drums). Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on June 28 & July 8, 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (1451). Includes liner notes by A.B. Spellman. Digitally remastered by George Piros (Atlantic Studios, New York, New York). John Coltrane's search for a fresh musical feeling--in which the front line and the rhythm section are more nearly equal--began through an exhaustive study of chords. But alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman and his acolyte Don Cherry had discovered another path by concentrating on rhythmic melodies and a polytonal brand of modality. Coltrane played with Coleman from time to time (though they never recorded), and even studied with Ornette. THE AVANT GARDE is the fruit of their admiration for each other, but co-leader Don Cherry nearly steals the show. Originally inspired by Fats Navarro and Miles Davis, Cherry responded to Coleman's inspiration with fluttery melodic lines and tart harmonic dissonances. On THE AVANT GARDE, his minimalist melodies and witty rhythmic displacements are a perfect contrast to Coltrane's voluminous testimonies--serving to illustrate his innovations in brass phrasing. In addition, the absence of a pianist forces the bass players to carry the whole band, and its a great joy to contrast Charlie Haden's rounded tone and bouncing melodic chromaticism on "Cherryco" with Percy Heath's rhythmic drive and chordal mastery on "The Invisible." Heath had recorded with Coleman, and his brilliant blues improvisations electrify "Focus On Sanity." Then there's the great drummer Ed Blackwell, who turns everyone out with his uncanny independence, melodic touch and joyous swing. Listen to him fill in around Coltrane's long linear testimonies and Cherry's rhythmic dipsy doodles on the joyous "Cherryco," and how ancient echoes of work songs, parades and African polyrhythms resonate through his solo. Coltrane leaps into "Focus On Sanity" like a man possessed, while Cherry answers with a feathery tone, convoluted lines and stabbing brass accents, before leading Trane through the glorious second section, with its bluesy, near-eastern modalities. On "The Blessing," Trane matches Cherry's tone with flute-like timbres on soprano saxophone, and is particularly aroused by the rhythmic slang of "The Invisible." And in a fitting nod to an old master, he and Cherry find inspiration aplenty on Monk's "Bemsha Swing." SKU: 5068627

Take Fountain
TAKE FOUNTAIN (2005) is the first album by the Wedding Present since 1996's SATURNALIA. As always, though, the band is merely a name for a clutch of musicians working around singer/songwriter David Gedge. While TAKE FOUNTAIN has traces of the Wedding Present's classic recipe of driving dynamics and epic electric guitars, it bears a closer resemblance to Gedge's previous project, Cinerama. The opener, "Interstate 5," for example, kicks off with chugging, amped-up rock guitars, then segues into a evocative soundtrack-like music. Gedge also continues Cinerama's penchant for breezy, tightly crafted pop, replete with hooky choruses and chiming guitars. The jaunty, up-tempo "Always the Quiet One" is lushly textured, textbook power-pop, as is the mid-tempo love-story-gone-wrong "I'm from Further North than You." While Gedge sometimes turns in atmospheric slower songs, such as the processional-themed "Mars Sparkles Down on Me" (with its subtle string flavors), and punchy, crunching rock ("Don't Touch That Dial"), most of TAKE FOUNTAIN is crisp, well-crafted pop-rock full of the bittersweet themes of love andheartache. Fans of Gedge's work with Cinerama will feel right at home here, and old Wedding Present devotees may find themselves pleasantly surprised at the singer/songwriter's matured songcraft. SKU: 6578907

Keeping a similar American travelling theme to 'The Ragpickers..', 'Shangri-La' sees Knopfler exploring U.S history ideas through his laid back guitar rock style with touches of modern country. The album includes the lead single 'Boom Like That' which dissects the effects of the fast food spread across developing America. This version also includes a bonus DVD. SKU: 6569405

Soul Station [Remastered]
The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SOUL STATION includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal. Personnel: Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Blakey (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 7, 1960. Includes liner notes by Joe Goldberg and Bob Bluemnthal. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey). This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. Of all Hank Mobley's classic sessions for Blue Note, the timeless SOUL STATIONis by far the most cherished. This 1960 set features a quartet of Mobley and three masters of the rhythm section, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey. What makes this so special, however, is the sheer perfection of it all; Mobley's tenor is soulful and confident, Kelly is at his tasteful best, and Chambers and Blakey work in tandem like a well-oiled machine. The themes are all executed with straightforward swinging panache and the solo spots by all are some of their most flawless excursions. From bouncing grooves like "This I Dig of You" and the slow blues of the title track to the danceable Latin rhythms in "Split Feelin's," this is a fully formed stylistic milestone that perfectly encapsulates the hard bop era. Queen Is Dead, The
The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded in England in Winter 1985. Arguably the Smiths' masterpiece, THE QUEEN IS DEAD found the band at the artistic apex of a career that knew few lows. More than any of their other albums, THE QUEEN IS DEAD represents the elegance, craftsmanship and humor for which the Smiths are remembered. Opening the album, the explosive title track is filled with vintage punk-era iconoclastic rage, wherein Morrissey tears at the very fabric of the British monarchy atop the howling feedback and swirling chords of Johnny Marr and the pounding fury of Rourke and Joyce (whose punk rootswere never so apparent). THE QUEEN IS DEAD also contains some of the band's most disarmingly beautiful work. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" bears a lush accompaniment and utterly miserable lyric, while the chiming, heavenly atmosphere of "The Boy With A Thorn In His Side," as convincing an ode to the sensitive outcast as has ever been penned. "Bigmouth Strikes Again," the album's most recognizable tune, is a dizzying adrenaline rush. And the upbeat tunesmanship of Marr was never in sharper contrast with Morrissey's lyrical ire than on the bouncy, wistful "Cemetry Gates." SKU: 1000846

Supertramp: Roger Hodgson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Rick Davies (vocals, keyboards); John A. Helliwell (woodwinds); Dougie Thomson (bass); Bob C. Benberg (drums). Additional personnel: "Slide" Hyde (trombone, tuba); Gary Mielke (programming). Producers: Supertramp, Peter Henderson. Reissue producers: Beth Stempel, Bill Levenson. Recorded at the Village Recorders, Los Angeles, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Often forgotten, and when finally remembered it is usually for the often tedious, but huge-selling Crime Of The Century. This record cuts away the pomp and keeps it comparatively simple with some memorable pop songs and lyrics, for example, in the title track a simple statement, 'take a look at my girlfriend, she's the only one I've got',or the ridiculously simple rhymes in 'The Logical Song', and the painful truth of 'Goodbye Stranger' and 'Take The Long Way Home', which are further irritatingly catchy songs. Sadly Supertramp were not able to build on this excellent collection although they still have a loyal following. SKU: 1072872

Hotter Than July
Personnel includes: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Betty Wright, Angela Winbush, The O'Jays. All tracks have been digitally remastered. By the time HOTTER THAN JULY was released in 1980, Stevie Wonder had spent the '70s making his transition into adulthood by redefining pop music and winning widespread public and critical acclaim (along with a boatload of Grammys). As was usually the case on previous albums, Wonder's first release of the '80s featured him playing a variety of instruments, supported by a number of famous guests including Angela Winbush, Michael Jackson, Betty Wright and members of the Gap Band. The result was an album of breezy love songs ("Rocket Love"), deliciously upbeat pop ("I Ain't Gonna Stand For It") and a thinly disguised tribute to Bob Marley ("Master Blaster [Jammin']"). But the one song that Wonder gave himself most to was "Happy Birthday," a relentlessy positive compostion specifically written as part of this giftedartist's fight to get Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday recognized as a national holiday. Stevie Wonder eventually won that fight and by the mid-80s, his dream had become a reality. SKU: 6434108

America's queen of avant-garde adult pop follows up 2003's 'Tales Of A Librarian' best-of collection with this, her seventh studio album. On this self-produced and recorded release, Amos has been inspired by the classic sound of the Hammond organ, which she uses liberally throughout, alongwith Afro-Cuban drums and gospel choirs. Mummer [Remastered]
All tracks have been digitally remastered. Having fully settled into their retirement from touring, this was XTC's second album since leaving the stage for good. With none of the songs having developed in live performance, their studio inclinations were given full range to go where they might. MUMMER opens with the African rhythms of "Beating Of Hearts," with things then immediately turning intimate and pastoral as Colin Moulding's "Wonderland" driftsin like a falling leaf. Andy Partridge delivered a few novel takes on familiar themes of love and longing with "Love On a Farmboy's Wages" and "Great Fire." The album also closes with his "Funk Pop A Roll," which ironically starts a dance party right when it's time to leave. SKU: 1061065

For LP Fans Only
A compilation of Sun and early RCA recordings. Digitally remastered by Joe Lopes (February 1989, RCA Recording Studios, New York). By 1959 Elvis Presley had spent a full year in the Army, leaving RCA Records with no fresh material to offer his adoring public. To keep the pump primed, RCA cleaned out its vaults and came up with the material for two albums, FOR LP FANS ONLY and A DATE WITH ELVIS. Tracks for these albums were drawn from Elvis' early Sun recordings, songs from movie soundtracks, extended play records, and singles. FOR LP FANS ONLY, released in February 1959, exposed the general public to a number of Presley's seminal 1954 and 1955 Sun recordings for the first time: these recordings would not appear together on a single non-bootleg release until 1975's SUN SESSIONS. RCA chose to "enhance"--critics would say ruin--the Sun recordings with added reverb, but the power of the performances on "That's All Right," "Mystery Train," "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone," and "You're A Heartbreaker" shines through nonetheless. Also included is "Poor Boy" (fromthe "Love Me Tender" soundtrack EP), a torrid cover of Lloyd Price's "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy," and a similarly frenzied run-through of Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll." Like many albums of its time, FOR LP FANS ONLY is extremely short, clocking in at just under 24 minutes. SKU: 5062759

Hi Masters, The
Includes liner notes by Alan Robinson. This is part of The Hi Masters series. This album compiles some of Green's biggest hits for the Hi label during his secular '70s period. Since his is one of the most important legacies in all of R&B, that's no small thing. With so much ground to cover, there's really no way to cover all the bases, but Green never recorded a substandard tune during his Hi years, and THE HI MASTERS is consistently satisfying. The album focuses more on Green's churning, uptempo material than on his sensual ballads. From his reinterpretation of the Temptations'"I Can't Get Next to You" to his own seminal composition "Take Me to the River," Green gives his all, his sweet, pliant voice the very epitome of soul. He's always had a way of redefining others' songs as well, as made clear by his revelatory versions of Kris Kristofferson's "For the Good Times" and Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away." It's physically impossible for a 15-song Al Green compilation to be definitive, but you can't go wrong with this one. SKU: 4125163
