The Small Faces: Steve Marriot (vocals, guitar); Ian McLagan, Jimmy Winston (keyboards); Ronnie Lane (bass, background vocals); Kenney Jones (drums). Additional personnel: P.P. Arnold (background vocals). Includes liner notes by John Hellier. The first official release of recordings made for radio broadcast on the BBC's Saturday Club (12 tracks spread across four sessions from 1965 and 1966) and Top Gear (three songs from a 1968 session). The first appearance on Saturday Club, which showcases their debut single "Watcha Gonna Do About It," features original keyboards player Jimmy Winston, with replacement Ian McLagan playing on all subsequent dates. As well as plugging their latest singles ("Sha-La-La-La-Lee," "Hey Girl," "All or Nothing"), the diminutive Mods cover R&B songs like "Baby Don't Do It" and "Shake." Labelmate P.P. Arnold can be heard contributing backing vocals to "Every Little Bit Hurts" and amuscular "If I Were a Carpenter," both from the final session which also yields "Lazy Sunday," complete with sound effects. With only "Jump Back" failing to appear on an original single or album, this collection is aimed at the completist, who will also enjoy the short linking interviews, which have been collected at the end of the disc but can be programmed back into the original running order. Win Lose Or Draw [Remastered]
The Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, acoustic guitar, Clavinet, organ); Richard Betts (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric & slide guitars); Chuck Leavell (piano, electric piano, Moog synthesizer, Clavinet, background vocals); Lamar Williams(bass); Butch Trucks (drums, congas, percussion, tympani); Jaimoe (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Johnny Sandlin (acoustic guitar, percussion); Bill Stewart (percussion). Producers: Johnny Sandlin, Allman Brothers Band. Recorded at Capricorn Sound Studios, Macon, Georgia and The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California between February and July 1975. Originally released on Capricorn (CP-0156). While not exactly on par with such classics as 1969's THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND or 1970's IDLEWILD SOUTH, the Allman Brothers' 1975 release, WIN, LOSE OR DRAW, at least demonstrated that the band was still together, despite a two-year layoff between albums. Unquestionably the record's highlight is the album-opening cover of Muddy Water's "Can't Lose What You Never Had," but other cuts such as the instrumental "High Falls," the title track and "Nevertheless" also prove to be standouts. Longtime fans could sense trouble brewing behind the scenes, and their instincts proved right--the Allmans would take a three-year sabbatical after one more album, the live WIPE THE WINDOWS. Master, The (1961-1984)
THE MASTER (1961-1984) features an 89-song overview of Marvin Gaye's career, including 18 previously unreleased tracks as well as various rarities. The package contains a 68-page booklet with photos. Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye (vocals, keyboards, drums, percussion); Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Mary Wells, Kim Weston (vocals); Gordon Banks, Ray Parker, Jr. (guitar); Joel Peskin (saxophone); Nolan Smith, Dr. George Shaw, Ray Brown (trumpet); Sidney Muldrew (French horn); Sonny Burke (piano, Fender Rhodes); Joe Sample (piano); Joe Hunter, Richard "Popcorn" Wylie (keyboards); Elmira Collins (vibraphone); Chuck Rainey, Wilton Felder (bass); Bugsy Wilcox, Preston Wilcox (drums); Gary Jones (percussion, congas). Producers include: William "Mickey" Stevenson, Norman Whitfield, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Clarence Paul. Compilation producer: Amy Herot. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Stevie Wonder is an unarguable genius. That allowed, a credible case can still be made that the late Marvin Gaye was, pound for pound, the single most talented artist to have come to prominence at Motown Records in the '60s. Gaye, in fact, could do it all. Hewas a formidable songwriter, a supremely funky studio drummer, a highly charismatic performer, and, of course, an amazingly expressive singer, equally at home with the R&B and soul numbers that made his name as with the earlier pop standards he loved equally. This four-CD set is the definitive Marvin Gaye anthology, providing a fully rounded overview of his career, from the great early blues and gospel based hits to the sensual crooning of his final days and everything in between. THE MASTER is also fleshed out with 18 revelatory unreleased tracks, both studio and live (trust us: you have to hear his in-concert version of "The Star Spangled Banner" to believe it). SKU: 1035235

We Travel The Space Ways/Bad And Beautiful
2 LPs on 1 CD: WE TRAVEL THE SPACEWAYS (1960)/BAD & BEAUTIFUL (1963). Producers: Ihnfinity Inc., Alton Abraham. Reissue producer: Jerry Gordon. Includes liner notes by Art Lange. WE TRAVEL THE SPACEWAYS: Personnel: Sun Ra (piano, organ); Marshall Allen (alto saxophone, bells, percussion); James Spaulding, James Scales (alto saxophone); John Gilmore (tenor saxophone, bells, percussion); Pat Patrick (baritone saxophone, percussion); Phil Cohran, Walter Strickland, Art Hoyle (trumpet); Julian Priester, Nate Pryor (trombone); Ronnie Boykins (bass); Wilburn Green (electric bass); Robert Barry (drums, percussion); Edward Skinner (percussion). Recorded in Chicago, Illinois between 1958 and 1960. BAD & BEAUTIFUL: Personnel: Sun Ra (piano); Marshall Allen (alto saxophone, flute, percussion); John Gilmore (tenor saxophone, percussion); Pat Patrick (baritone saxophone, percussion); Ronnie Boykins (bass); Tommy Hunter (drums). Recorded at the Choreographers' Workshop, New York, New York in 1961. The music on WE TRAVEL THE SPACEWAYS and BAD & BEAUTIFUL comprises a mixed bag of the great Sun Ra in transition. The inclusion of several pop standards on BAD & BEAUTIFUL harkens back to Sun Ra's early night club days in Chicago, even as tunes like "Exotic Two" and "Ankh" look simultaneously to the future and the rhythms of antiquity. The stripped down instrumentation of the 1961 sextet recording BAD& BEAUTIFUL puts the focus on Sun Ra's piano work and the melodic contributions of his three great reed mainstays: alto shaman Marshall Allen, tenor collosus John Gilmore, and baritone great Pat Patrick. Together, these musicians formed the core of Sun Ra's bands for decades, not unlike Ellington's great core of reedmen. The 1958-59 sessions that make up WE TRAVEL THE SPACEWAYS feature Sun Ra at his cosmic tone organ and piano allowing him to achieve eerie oriental harmonies of "Eve." On a bluesy tune like "Space Loneliness" you can hear Ra taking a traditional riff structure (Jimmy Forrest's "Night Train") and stretching it harmonically by use of polytonal devices and astringent melodic contrasts. At the same time the lush sonorities of "New Horizons" are mitigated by quirky percussion colors, ritualistic rhythmic figures and Ronnie Boykins' funky bass ostinato. And for those who question Ra's jazz pedigree, there are the Tadd Dameronian structures of the hard boppin' "Velvet." SKU: 5003696

This Year's Model [Remastered]
THIS YEAR'S MODEL is packaged with a 28-page booklet that includes rare photos and printed song lyrics. Elvis Costello & The Attractions: Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar); Steve Nieve (keyboards); Bruce Thomas (bass); Pete Thomas (drums). Additional personnel: Mick Jones (guitar); Davey Payne (saxophone). Producer: Nick Lowe. Reissue producers: Gary Stewart, Val Jennings. Recorded between August 1977 and October 1978. Originally released on Columbia (35331). Includes liner notes by Elvis Costello. All tracks have been digitally remastered. For his second album, Costello fine-tuned his aesthetic by abandoned the California studio cat accompanists of his debut for the more aggressive, quirky and very British Attractions, who would virtually define EC's sound over the next several years. Where MY AIM IS TRUE highlighted Costello's rootsy influences (the Band, etc.), THIS YEAR'S MODEL wholeheartedly embraces the "new wave" out-with-the-old mindset, favoring tightly-wound ferocity over back-porch-isms. Irresistibly catchy, in a twitchy, neurotic, white-knuckled way, THIS YEAR'S MODEL is Costello at his edgiest. The classic "Pump it Up" pummels the listener with garage band organ, pounding drums, and HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED-style ranting. "Radio, Radio" turned into something of an anti-authoritarian anthem for Costello. The snaky guitar and reggae-tinged drums of "I Don't Want to Goto Chelsea" complement Costello's verge-of-a-nervous-breakdown vocal performance nicely. Come to think of it, so does nearly everything else here. SKU: 1070543

Best Of Sandy Denny, The
These 16 songs offer the briefest possible introduction to this remarkable singer and songwriter. THE BEST OF SANDY DENNY was compiled by Joe Boyd (who produced most of her recordings), and husband Trevor Lucas. The tracks are culled from the four solo albums that were released during her lifetime, three Fairport Convention releases, and work from the short-lived band Fotheringay, in which Lucas was a member. The tracks run the gamutfrom orchestral splendor ("The Lady") to British folk-rock ("Tam Lin"). There are two songs by Richard Thompson (including a remarkable rendition of "For Shame of Doing Wrong"), but the bulk of the material was written by Denny herself. Denny possessed one of the most spiritually captivating voices of her era and wrote some bona fide classic songs. The set closes with one of her very finest and most beloved numbers, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes." SKU: 1011431

Iceberg/Freedom Of Speech
Fulltitle: The Iceberg/Freedom Of Speech...Just Watch What You Say. Personnel: Ice-T (vocals); Jello Biafra (vocals); Ernie C (guitar); LLoyd (bass); Beat Master V (drums); Afrika Islam, Johnny "Sleepy John" Rivers (programming); Bronx Style Bob, Donald D. Recorded at Syndicate Studios West and Wide Tracks, Los Angeles, California. THE ICEBERG proved that Ice-T was more just than a "hardcore" or "gangsta" rapper. An appearance by Jello Biafra (of the punk group the Dead Kennedys) would certainly be out of place on many rap albums, but along with Ice-T's love of punk music and metal, it shows Ice-T's solidarity with another crusader for free speech. THE ICEBERG delves into the politics of power and free speech on "Shut Up, Be Happy" and "Freedom Of Speech," along with the rappers' trademark crime tales. SKU: 5059981

Peaceful World
Personnel: Buzzy Feiten (vocals, guitar, bass); Felix Cavaliere (vocals, piano, electric piano, organ, bass marimba); Molly Holt, Ann Sutton (vocals); Link Chamberlain (guitar); Alice Coltrane (harp); Joe Farrell (flute, soprano & tenor saxophones); Hubert Laws (flute); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Ernie Wilkins, Jon Smith (saxophone); Joe Newman, Ernie Royal (trumpet); Garnett Brown (trombone, horns); Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Gerald Gemott, William Salter, Chuck Rainey (electric bass); Dino Danelli (drums, percussion); Ralph MacDonald (percussion, congas, talking drum, bells, shaker); Cynthia Webb, Bruce Buono, Buddy Buono (background vocals). Originally released on Columbia (30641). Digitally remastered by Sundazed Studios, Coxsackie, New York. 1970's PEACEFUL WORLD is an unusual late-era Rascals album. Though the hits slacked off after "Groovin'" and "How Can I Be Sure," the group continued down the path blazed by those twosingles: jazz-influenced, lightly psychedelized pop. By the time of this album, though, the psychedelia and the pop are all but gone, and this is basically a jazz record. The Rascals at this time were down to two of the original members, keyboardist Felix Cavaliere and drummer Dino Danelli. Augmented by jazz musicians such as Alice Coltrane and Hubert Laws, the two Rascals create an early form of jazz-rock fusion neither as overbearing as Blood Sweat and Tears or as wimpy as Chicago. Throughout this lengthy set--two LPs on one CD--the players solo with skill and passion over songs which are less melodic and more propulsive than most Rascals efforts. The 20-minute title track is only as long as it needs to be. SKU: 1022873

Supergenerous
Supergenerous: Kevin Street (acoustic, tenor, electric slide, & Nashville steel guitars, mandolin, mandola, mandocello); Cyro Baptista (snare drum, symphonic bass drums, surdo, Balinese gongs, cowbell). Additional personnel: Cassandra Wilson (vocals). Recorded at Joe Music, New York, New York in December 1999. Supergenerous is a duo: Kevin Breit, guitarist and player of stringed things, and Cyro Baptista, percussionist, and this eponymous album is an almost-all instrumental gem. (Smoky-voiced jazz singer Cassandra Wilson gives "Home On the Range" a sultry recital.) Breit plays with both incredible technique and admirable restraint. The medleys "Dreamin' Of A Train/Take the A Train" and "Caravan/Camel, Sand and Caravan" feature delicate and hearty acoustic slide playing worthy of Ry Cooder or Mississippi Fred McDowell. "God's Parking Lot" is a shimmering dreamscape, with surreal dub-like production, eerie, distant electric guitar and unsettling percussion. "Brohemia" features picking that brings to mind Celtic folk, South American charango, Appalachian dulcimer and West African guitar music--but it's all grounded by Baptista's gently insinuating, samba-tinged rhythms. With enough twists and quirks to keep things interesting along with a cozy (though not overly mellow), good-natured ambiance,SUPERGENEROUS is a delight. SKU: 1044642

Who Can You Trust
Morcheeba: Skye Edwards (vocals); Ross Godfrey (guitar, lap steel, bass, Wurlitzer piano, synthesizer); Paul Godfrey (drums, drum programming, scratches). Additional personnel: Richard Harrison (guitar); Steve Bentley-Klein (violin, trumpet); Brent Snell (violin); AdrianTurner (viola); Richard Bridgemont (cello); Tom Hodges (flute, saxophone); Dave Lee (French horn); Gary Baldwin (Hammond C3); Jarrod Coombes (acoustic bass); Pete Norris (synthesizer programming). Recorded in London, England. This U.K. trio injects the aesthetics of trip-hop with a lush, languid, easy-listening air for a concoction that demands a deep, comfortable couch and a top-of-the-line set of headphones. The hypnotic, understated delivery of vocalist Skye Edwards floats over the sweeping synth arrangements, slide guitar, Hammond organ, and subtle technological trickery of brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey. WHO CAN YOU TRUST?, the band's full-length debut, includes the singles "Trigger Hippie," "Tape Loop," and "The Music That We Hear." Atmosphere is paramount for Morcheeba, and TRUST's track list passes through a spectrum of colors. The opener, "Moog Island," sounds like a sleepy siren song. "Post Houmous" lulls with its dub-inflected mid-tempo groove. "End Theme" is glossy retro lounge. But the whole album feels like one beautiful, continuous opium dream. Morcheeba references '30s blues, '90s electronica, '60s psychedelia, and film soundtrack soundscapes, blending these elements into a savory stream of pure sound quite unlike anything else. WHO CAN YOU TRUST? invites listeners to dive in. SKU: 5053694

Montreux 1977
Personnel: Count Basie (piano); Jimmy Forrest, Eric Dixon, Charlie Fowles, Danny Turner, Bobby Plater (saxophone); Waymon Reed, Lyn Biviano, Sonny Cohn (trumpet); Al Grey, Mel Wanzo, Bill Hughes, Mal Wanzo (trombone); Freddie Green (guitar); John Duke (bass); Butch Miles (drums). Recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland on July 15, 1977. Originally released on Pablo Live (2308-207). Includes original liner notes by NormanGranz. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1989, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This classic dose of Basie big band jazz, recorded live at the Montreux Festival in 1977, proves once again that the Count had the touch even late into his career. Heading a powerhouse 16-piece ensemble through 12 jumping numbers, Basie's band-leading skills and understated genius as a pianist shine throughout. The band's facility and range is demonstrated on mid-tempo swingers like "Splanky," sweeping, Ellingtonian ballads like "The More I See You," and classics like "Night In Tunisia," "Jumpin' At The Woodside," and Basie's signature tune "One O'Clock Jump." Careening from tight, rhythmic punctuation to over-the-top brass caterwauling, Basie's big band sounds as precise and powerful on this thoroughly satisfying date as any of their earlier incarnations. Rebel Music [Remastered]
Producers include: Bob Marley & The Wailers, Chris Blackwell, Steve Smith, Alex Sadkin. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Includes liner notes by Neil Spencer. All tracks have been digitally remastered. When Bob Marley brought the sounds of reggae to a worldwide stage, he did so on a platform of Rastafarian beliefs with songs that addressed social injustice. REBEL MUSIC is a collection of Marley's songs that simultaneously speaks of the oppressed masses and calls for justice. Examples of Marley's more overtly religious material include "War/No More Trouble" (inspired by a speech made by the Emperor Haille Selassie, Rastafarian spiritual leader) and "Crazy Baldhead" (the term used for non-believers). Marley also turns to the past, whether it is the injustices of slavery over hundreds of years ("Slave Driver") or witnessing firsthand the abject poverty around him during a childhood spent in the impoverished Trenchtown section of Kingston ("ThemBelly Full (But We Hungry)." All this was accomplished with the help of a select group of crack musicians including the I-Threes (whose harmonies are prominent in the title track) and the Barrett Brothers rhythm section, who soldiered on after the departures of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Along with the surprisingly upbeat title track, REBEL MUSIC is made complete with a live version of "Get Up, Stand Up," the quintessential protest song. SKU: 1072354
