Talkin' Verve (The Roots Of Acid Jazz)
TALKIN' VERVE: ROOTS OF ACID JAZZ includes performances by Jimmy Smith with Johnny Pate's Orchestra and Oliver Nelson's Orchestra. Personnel includes: James Oscar "Jimmy" Smith (vocals, organ); Johnny Pate, Oliver Nelson, Lalo Schifrin (arranger, conductor); Jerry Dodgion (alto saxophone, reeds); George Dorsey (alto saxophone); Budd Johnson, Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone); Marvin Halladay (baritone saxophone); Snooky Young (trumpet, flugelhorn); Jimmy Maxwell, Joe Newman, Clark Terry (trumpet); Bill Berry (flugelhorn); Wayne Andre, Bernie Powell, Billy Byers, Ernie Tack, Quentin Jackson, Urbie Green (trombone); Paul Faulise (bass trombone); Donald Corrado, Earl Chapin, Bill Correa (French horn); Don Butterfield (tuba); Jerome Richardson, Plas Johnson (reeds); Billy Butler, Kenny Burrell, Thornell Schwartz, Wes Montgomery, Bill Suyker (guitar); Bob Bushnell, Ben Tucker, Carol Kaye (bass); Donald Dean, Grady Tate, Herbie Lovelle, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Larry Bunker, Mel Lewis, Bill Rodriguez (drums); Victor Pantoja, Ray Barretto (congas); George Devens, Bobby Rosengarden, Phil Kraus (percussion). Compilation producer: Aric Lach Morrison. Recorded between March 20, 1963 and September 11, 1972. Includes liner notes by Tom Terrell. This is part of Verve's Talkin' Verve: Roots of Acid Jazz series. Withhis lean funk arrangements and fat Hammond organ sound, Smith's evocative instrumental jams of the '60s and '70s became one of the favorite staples in the sampling repertoire of club DJs in the '90s. Targeting the revivalist interest in his work, Verve compiled a disc of some of Smith's tastiest grooves from 11 separate LP's released on Verve since 1963. Smith's sound, a melange of blues, Gospel, jazz and soul--at times backed only by guitar and drums, at others with a rollicking big band--is irresistible. As contextualized here as a precursor to acid jazz, it's also clearly influential. The slinky stomp of "Ape Woman," the poly-rhythmic, conga-powered workout with guitarist Wes Montgomery in "Mellow Mood," the heavy-lidded riffing of "Groove Drops;" Smith cornered the market on hipper-than-hip-shaking before most of today's clubbers were in diapers. Since some of these tracks are on CD for the first time, TALKIN' VERVE: ROOTS OF ACID JAZZ is a valuable collection for long-time fans and newcomers alike, serving as reminder to all that, in order to get the real thing, one has to go to the source. Eurythmics Live 1983-1989
Eurythmics: Annie Lennox (vocals); Dave Stewart (various instruments). EURYTHMICS LIVE contains no overdubs and features several acoustic performances. Like 1991's GREATEST HITS (and seemingly the duo themselves), Eurythmics' LIVE 1981-1989 pretends their debut, 1981's IN THE GARDEN, doesn't exist, and picks up their story with the worldwide commercial breakthrough of 1983's "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." This two-disc, 22-track, 107-minute set charts Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart's career from that high point on, and contradicts the common misperception of Eurythmics as a technopop band. Though the duo were never afraid of including keyboards in their sound, these live tracks are augmented by Dave Stewart's searing slide guitar, real drums, often courtesy of Blondie's Clem Burke, and regular appearances by live strings and horns. The soulful intensity of Annie Lennox's voice comes through more clearly onstage than on the sometimes over-polished records, and the songs sound fresh, exciting, andvital even today. SKU: 5061910

This Is Big Audio Dynamite
Former Clash member Mick Jones surprised all doubters with this auspicious debut. For starters, instead of going entirely solo, Jones immersed himself in another band, one that reveled in a multi-racial blend of musical styles. THIS IS BIG AUDION DYNAMITE is a seminal ground-breaker for its pastiche of movie and song samples, rock guitars, and pre-techno beats; its genre-mixing ethic helped pave the way for '90sartists such as Moby. Opening with the thrilling "Medicine Show," a laundry list of ridiculous cure-alls and remedies interspersed with dialogue and music samples from the film THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY, Jones clearly raises the bar from his final Clash moments. For a guy who once had aspirations for glam rock, Jones takes a thrillingly innovative step toward the future with THIS IS BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE. SKU: 1003718

John P. Kelly
Personnel includes: Mr. Cheeks, Big Gipp, Horace Brown, Stephen Marley. Producers include: Bink!, Mr. Sexxx, Stephan Marley, Easy Mo Bee, Caspa. While Mr. Cheeks is not short on street cred, his raps are a million miles from the sociopathic tendencies of the gangsta world. The production on JOHN P. KELLY is full of funk and R&B grooves, not ominous, angular gangsta tracks. Sample-wise, Cheeks reaches back to Silver Convention's '70s disco hit "Fly Robin Fly" and EddieKendricks's "Keep on Truckin'," and the backbone of these tunes honors those sources. Lyrically, Cheeks is more interested in hanging with his friends and getting friendly with the ladies than engaging in crime or violence. Guest vocals from Stephen Marley (on the appropriately reggae-tinged "Mama Say") and Horace Brown (the R&B-laced "Friday Night") contribute to the album's crossover appeal, but there's not an ounce of compromise to be found in Mr. Cheeks's hip-hop vision. NEW WORLD ORDER was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. The title track was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. "Back To Living Again" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. That Curtis Mayfield is still gracing us with his soulful presence is a miracle. His comeback from paralysis has been quiet, slow and steady. Mayfield's delicate, breathy falsetto defined the era of late-'60s/early-'70s soul. The man who sang "Superfly" and "Freddie's Dead" had, and still has, a rare gift: a combination of abounding talent and social conscience. On NEW WORLD ORDER, which has nothing to do with George Bush and everything to do with the continuing saga of the king of smooth soul music, both his sound and his conscience remain intact. The arrangements are, as always, spare, even gritty. A single, piercing guitar note wails in the background, as Mayfield seems to barely touch the notes he sings. He just brushes up against them at first, then embraces them like long lost lovers. On "Ms. Martha," a slow-grooved tribute to a neighborhood woman's quiet power, Mayfield enlists the help of gospel supervoice Mavis Staples. Here, and throughout, the message is real, unadorned, but always positive. SKU: 5063663

Every Man And Woman Is A Star [Remastered]
Ultramarine: Paul Hammond, Ian Cooper. Additional personnel: Brendan Staunton (vocals on "Weird Gear"); Jolly James (violin); Jemma Mellerio (clarinet); Phil James (trumpet, harmonica); Gabriele Gai, Charlie May (keyboards); Paul Johnson (drums, Chinese flute). Recorded at Boundary Row, Matrix and Elephant Studios, London, England between March 1991 and April 1992. This sublime 1992 release by the London-based duo of Paul Hammond and Ian Cooper has become something of an underground classic. With its comforting, womb-like warmth, which presaged the softer chill-out vibe of ambient by several years, it is a record to return to, one that brings renewed joys whenever it is played. Its unabashed positive energy is evident even in the record's completely unironic title. Fat beats, burbling synthesizers, eclectic samples (Echo & the Bunnymen, the Eagles) images of the American West, and spoken words on spirituality don't sound as if they would necessarily belong together, but on EVERY MAN these disparate elements merge into a seamless whole. Throughout, strong melodies bring everything together and transform the concoction into something rich and memorable. Standout tracks include the insanely catchy "Weird Gear," featuring a hypnotic groove and the record's most straightforward vocal. The swinging "Saratoga" makes ingenious use of the intro to "One of These Nights," combining touches of scat singing anda nifty flute phrase for a supremely laid-back disco feel. SKU: 1073920

Ball
Widespread Panic: John Bell, George McConnell (vocals, guitar); Dave Schools (vocals, bass); Todd Nance (vocals, drums); John "JoJo" Hermann (keyboards); Domingo S. Ortiz (percussion). Of the many Southern-based "jam bands" that garnered large followings in the wake of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead's untimely demise, Widespread Panic is perhaps the only ensemble to both fully explore the progressive tendencies touched on by contemporaries like Phish and Dave Matthews, and accurately capture the Dead'srootsy, homespun hippy vibe. While Widespread Panic have never equaled the Dead in terms of songwriting, on BALL, the band makes a significant leap forward in this department. WP properly balances its trademark butt-shaking, percussion-fueled Southern boogie grooves with just enough hooks to attract those who generally use the bass solo as an opportunity to hit the concession stand. Fans of the band's jammier side should make sure to check out the hidden bonus track at the end of track 13, which is about as close a musical equivalent to a mellow late-night summer trip as has ever been recorded. Decadence
Head Automatica: Daryl Palumbo, Larry Gorman, The Bastard Prince, Jarvis Morgan Holden, Craig Bonich, Jim Greer . Additional personnel: Dan The Automator (programming). Producers: Dan The Automator; Howard Benson; Craig Aaronson. Recording information: The Glue Factory, San Francisco, CA. Although Glassjaw's Daryl Palumbo could have stuck to his nu-metal guns while teaming up with dance/electronica producer Dan "the Automator" Nakamura, the vocalist uses DECADENCE as a conduit for Rapture-worthy grooves with a rock & roll swagger. Among the more booty-shaking Head Automatica creations are the Primal Scream-like "Brooklyn Is Burning," with its mix of big beats and pumped-up riffage, and "Please Please Please (Young Hollywood)," a bass-driven rant with illicit imagery and swirling synths. A garage-rock vibe infuses this project, and is most apparent on the organ-driven rave-ups "At the Speed of a Yellow Bullet" and "Dance Party Plus." The biggest change hardcore fans will encounter is Palumbo taking a crack at singing, rather than the howling he's best known for as part of his regular Glassjaw gig. His phrasing recalls an Americanized version of the Cure's Robert Smith, particularly on the militaristic shuffle "King Caesar." Throughout the album, this Long Island native is ably aided by Nakamura's sonic tinkerings, most notably on theMiddle Eastern-tinged "Head Automatica Soundsystem." SKU: 6565010

Additional personnel includes: Wayne Perkins (guitar); John "Rabbit" Bundrick (Clavinet, organ, synthesizer); Tyrone Downie (organ); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Chris Karen, Francisco Willie Pep, Winston Wright (percussion); Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths (background vocals). Engineers include: Carlton Lee, Stu Barrett, Tony Platt. Recorded at Dynamic Sound, Randy's, Harry J. Studios, Kingston, Jamaica and Island Studios, London, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. One of the biggest drawbacks of the CD age is the lack of potential for the covers. The original issue of this pivotal album came in the shape of a Zippo lighter, which opened with a rivetted flip-top (eventually) to reveal the cut out flame. Beyond the flame was the real fire: a superb collection of songs that stand up to repeated play over 20 years later. Even with the huge commercial success that Marley enjoyed with big-selling albums, the Wailers'followers and critics come back to this superb record time and time again. The first proper reggae album for any new collector. SKU: 1061080

At The Cafe Bohemia Vol.1
Full performer name: Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Horace Silver (piano); Doug Watkins (bass). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded live at the Cafe Bohemia, New York, New York on November 23, 1955. Originally released on Bluenote (1507). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of Blue Note's Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. The Art Blakey/Horace Silver alliance that formed the Jazz Messengers in the '50s kicked off one the greatest ensembles in the history of jazz. This first volume of a live set from the famous Cafe Bohemia in 1955 features one of the earliest line-ups with Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Hank Mobley (saxophone) and Doug Watkins (bass) along with Silver and Blakey. This is the pure, original Messengers sound that reflectedthe best of what became known as '50s post-bop, also made popular by Miles Davis' first great quintet of the same period. The grooves are swinging, the soloists are cool and the spirit of the blues is in the air. After Blakey's proud introduction of his comrades the band launches into an easy-going reading of Benny Goodman's "Soft Winds" to kick off the set. Kenny Dorham's contributions to the evening's performance include his up-tempo "Minor's Holiday," the swinging "Prince Albert" and, of course, "The Theme," a Messenger's concert favorite. Also included are the standards "Alone Together," featuring Mobley's soulful lead, Tadd Dameron's classic "Lady Bird" and the immortal ballad "What's New" featuring Watkins. Finally, Mobley's blistering "Decifering The Message" puts the finishing touch on this classic set. SKU: 1065964

Boys For Pele
Personnel: Tori Amos (vocals, harpsichord, piano, harmonium, clavichord); Nancy Shanks (vocals); Steve Caton (acoustic 12-string guitar, electric guitar, guitar, mandolin); The Sinfonia Of London (strings); Michael Deegan, Bernard Quinn (bagpipes); Clarence J. Johnson III (soprano & tenor saxophones); James Watson (trumpet); Tracy Griffin, Brian Graber (flugelhorn); Mark Mullins (trombone); Craig Klein (sousaphone); The Black Dyke Mills Band (brass); Alan Friedman (organ, programming, sound effects); George Porter, Jr. (bass); Marcel Van Limbeek (church bells); Manu Katche (drums); Mino Cinelu (percussion); Darryl Lewis, Mark Sterling, Marvin Sterling, Sam Berfect, Jack Trimble, James Crawford, Jr., Gus McField, Jr. (background vocals); R.O.B., Marcel. Principally recorded in Counties Wicklow and Cork, Republic Of Ireland. BOYS FOR PELE was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Spirituality is tangled inexorably with power and patriarchy for Tori Amos. On Amos' third solo record, the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele serves as her alter-ego, presenting a threat to Amos' ever-present, menacing father figures. On "Muhammad My Friend," she warns, "I know you've seen fire/But you've never seen fire/Until you've seen Pele blow." Amos is equally intrigued by other strong, angry females--on "Twinkle," she admires "a girl twice as hard" who reportedly killed a man. In contrast to her words, Amos tends toward restrained, ethereal vocals; they occasionally verge on ferocity but never quite make it all the way. Her piano and harpsichord playing is, by turns, delicate and passionate. Contrasts like those between confessional and enigmatic lyrics, and between an underlying sense of anger and a voice that holds back from truly expressing it, create an electric tension throughout BOYS FOR PELE. PELE is the first record Amos has self-produced, and it branches out from her previous work, exploring more loosely structured songwriting and experimenting with the use of strings, brass and a gospel choir. Beautiful World
Personnel: Robin Thicke (vocals, piano); Bobby B. Keyes (guitar); ProJ (piano, drums); Harry King, Larry Cox (piano); Sean Hurley (bass); Herman Matthews (drums); Raphael Padilla (percussion). Who would have ever guessed that the son of the writers of theme songs for TV's FACTS OF LIFE and DIFFERENT STROKES would grow up to become one of the most exciting R&B artists of the early 21st century? Well that's exactly the case with Robin Thicke (son of TV personalities/composers Alan Thicke and Gloria Loring). Thicke's debut album A BEAUTIFUL WORLD puts Justin Timberlake to shame in the caucasian-Michael Jackson sweepstakes, even as it leaves behind cliched pop trappings for a quirky, innovative sound that owes more to Maxwell or D'Angelo (not to mention Stevie Wonder) than to any cookie-cutter R. Kelly wannabe. Thicke's velvety voice moves sinuously through the songs without ever overstating its case, and the production (by Thicke and his drummer Pro J) is subtle, complex, and endlessly surprising. Somehow he manages the difficult feat of taking all the elements of contemporary mainstream R&B, reshuffling them and coming out with something entirely his own. A BEAUTIFUL WORLD is a serious contender for best R&B album of 2003. SKU: 1082221

Riot Act World Tour No.13 - Mar 3 03 Tokyo
Recorded live at the Budokan, Toyko, Japan, on March 3rd, 2003. A decade down the road, when most of the original Seattle grunge bandshad fallen prey to either mortality, acrimony, or changing public tastes, Pearl Jam still stood tall above the well-settled, flannel-flecked dust. At the dawn of the 21st century, presumably in an effort to beat the bootleggers, the band starting releasing dozens of live albums. The best of these, like this 2003 disc, demonstrate the group's continuing vitality. From early grunge-era anthems such as "Evenflow" and the survivors' anthem "Alive" to the death-rock cover "Last Kiss" and the melodic, contemplative "Betterman," the full breadth of the band's vision is shown. As befits a band that Neil Young once used as a backing outfit, they know how to jam without veering into self-indulgence--a good thing, considering how many concert recordings were already floating around by the time of this double-disc release. Ignition
Full performer name: Brian Setzer '68 Comeback Special. Brian Setzer '68 Comeback Special: Brian Setzer (vocals, gutiar); Mark W. Winchester (upright bass); Bernie Dresel (drums). Additional personnel: The Brianaires (background vocals). Recorded at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Regardless of how much credit you give Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker for the Stray Cats' conception, this is probably the closest thing to a new Stray Cats album as you'll ever see again. It's the first time since that band broke up that Brian Setzer has ventured into guitar-bass-drums rockabilly trio format. One major difference between this group--whose name comes from a legendary televised Elvis Presley concert--and the Cats is the extent to which Setzer's guitar is featured. On song after song he peels off blistering licks with a sharpness that puts him in a leaguewith any other rock & roll guitarist you can name. Most of the tunes here are jumping rockabilly numbers that will bring a shiver of delight to nostalgic Stray Cats fans. On "5 Years, 4 Months, 3 Days," Setzer even employs a narrative approach that compares admirably to Dave Alvin's work with the Blasters. The only times the album falters are when Setzer tries to stretch the mold too far, as on the introspective "'59" or the faux-Mexican "Santa Rosa Rita." But those gaffes are quickly forgotten in the face of chargers like "Who Could Love This Car But Me" (co-written with none other than Joe Strummer) and the punchy "Get 'Em on the Ropes," which achieves an admirable synthesis of Carl Perkins, the Ramones, and NRBQ (kids, don't try this at home). Century Ends, A
Personnel: David Gray (vocals, acoustic guitar); Neil Maccoll (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Robin Millar (guitar); Michael Smith (saxophone); Dave Anderson (piano, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer organ); Mark Smith (bass); SteveSidelnyk (drums, percussion). David Gray's '93 debut marked him as a unique and important voice in folk-rock. His emphatic acoustic guitar strum and his Van Morrison-via-Steve Forbert vocal burr are the sonic focus here, but it's Gray's passionate, poetic songs that really take center stage. Imagine the protagonist of Joyce's PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN picking up guitar and pen, and you'll be on the right track. Gray's emotive delivery and heartfelt lyricism are full of youthful angst and passion. On "Birds Without Wings" and "Gathering Dust" he recoginizes the faults of the world around him as well as his personal failings, but on the transcendent, definitive "Shine," he expresses an unquenchable desire to rise above petty cares and find spiritual contentment. It's the battle for that contentment that's so expressively documented on A CENTURY ENDS. SKU: 1063100

In Concert Vol.2 [Remastered]
Solo performer:Joan Baez (vocals, guitar). Producer: Maynard Solomon. Reissue producer: Mark Spector. Recorded live at between August 1962 and November 1963. Originally released on Vanguard (9113). Includes liner notes by Bob Dylan and Arthur Levy. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Vanguard's Original Masters Series. The 'queen of folk' was an accomplished live performer as this, the first of two In Concert albums proved. Accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, Baez brought her pure, virginal soprano to contrasting material. Her interpretations of Childe ballads 'Matty Groves' and 'The House Carpenter' are particularly moving, but an empathy with American folklore, including Woody Guthrie and the Carter Family, is equally apparent. Baez's reading of Malvina Reynolds' protest song, 'What Have They Done To The Rain', is especially arresting and inspired a later pop hit for the Searchers. This album helped take folk music out of the coffee-house circuit and into national consciousness. SKU: 1073237
