Head On
In addition to regular audio tracks, HEAD ON also contains mulimedia files and two bonus MP3 files that can be accessed with a MacIntosh PowerMac computer. PC users can only access the bonus MP3 files. Super Collider: Christian Vogel, Jamie Lidell. Super Collider's debut album HEAD ON iselectronic dance music that's even more compelling heard on headphones. From the reptilian murk of the opening track "Cut the Phone," through this year's unlikely club hit "(You've Got a) Darn Cold Way of Lovin'," to the soulful coolness of "You Loosen Me Human," this album ups the ante for the artistic possibilities of dance music. Super Collider is Jamie Lidell and Christian Vogel, two established U.K. techno producers who have recorded for labels such as Tresor, Force Inc., and Mosquito. Aside from the duo's technological inventiveness, much of HEAD ON's success lies in Jamie Lidell's affecting vocals. Channeling Prince's soulfulness and tenderness into a uniquely expressive style, Lidell infuses the album with a funky sensuality. Equal parts ambient, house, funk, soul and technical mastery, HEAD ON is one of the most important dance releases of 1999. SKU: 3101129

Covers Record, The
Cat Power: Chan Marshall (vocals, guitar). Cat Power's (Chan Marshall) disarmingly naive music hits you in the gut with its bare simplicity. Her hurt, vibrato-less tone is pure, velvety, and completely understated. In its simplicity, it seems to convey all the sadness of the world--like a leafless treesilhouetted against slate-gray sky heavy with rain clouds. Marshall accompanies herself on guitar, piano, or autoharp. Her arrangements are minimal--hypnotic, repetitive riffs with chords that barely change. When she hits a bass note, the impact is jarring. Cat Power's music is sleep with all its troubled dreams. On THE COVERS RECORD, Marshall explores the work of other songwriters. She deconstructs each song then reconstructs it as her own. Anyone familiar with Cat Power will be hard-pressed to tell the difference between these COVERS and Marshall's originals. "Satisfaction" is barely recognizable in its new, slowed-down version--the chorus is missing, and the lyrics take on Dylan-esque/surrealist proportions. Other covers include Velvet Underground's "I Found a Reason" and an autoharp setting of "Sea of Love." COVERS' retro/vintage, bare-boned, 21st century folk music puts you in mind of how such music must have been before the advent of recording, with songs changing form from one singer to the next. Best Of UFO, The
Although UFO were never a singles band per se (their specialty was their album-oriented, electrifying live act), it's surprising how well single selections from their '70s glory years hold up on their own, as evidenced by ESSENTIAL UFO. Unjustly, the band has often been thought of as nothing more than a vehicle for the six-string shredding of Michael Schenker, but this collection proves otherwise--UFO were a solid hard rock band. Highlights include such fast paced rockers as "Lights Out," "Rock Bottom," "Let it Roll," and "Doctor Doctor" (future speed metallists of the '80s often cited UFO as a primary influence), as well as such melodic tunes as "Only You CanRock Me" and "Too Hot to Handle." ESSENTIAL UFO is a great introduction to this often-overlooked band. SKU: 1042016

Bells Of Dublin, The
The Chieftains: Kevin Conneff (vocals, bodhran); Martin Fay, Sean Keane (fiddle); Derek Bell (harp, tiompan, harpsichord); Matt Molloy (flute); Paddy Moloney (Uilleann pipes, tin whistle). Additional personnel includes: Jackson Browne (vocals, piano); Rickie Lee Jones, Elvis Costello, Nanci Griffith, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Marianne Faithfull, The Voice Squad (vocals); Burgess Meredith (spoken vocals); Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian pipes). Principally recorded at WindmillLane Studio, Dublin, Ireland. Includes liner notes by Paddy Moloney. The twelve bells of Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin are the inspiration for this CD. The bells are rung twice every Sunday, and on special occasions such as the inauguration of the president, or ringing in the New Year. Essentially a Christmas album, this 1991 release features performances by an extraordinary cast of guest musicians sitting in with The Chieftains. Highlights include "The Wren in The Furze," composed and sung by The Chieftains' own Kevin Conneff, and Elvis Costello's passionate vocal on "The St. Stephen's Day Murders." However, the most moving song on THE BELLS OF DUBLIN is Rickie Lee Jones's version of "O Holy Night." Her low, restrained singing style is entrancing, even sultry. At the song's climax, the sudden conviction of her voice is startling. All the instrumental work on this CD is top-notch, validating traditional Irish music, and making it accessible to modern ears. Young Chet
This is the companion CD to the William Claxton book of the same title. Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Bill Perkins, Phil Urso (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Giuffre (clarinet); Russ Freeman, Bobby Timmons (piano); Jimmy Bond, Carson Smith (bass); Bob Neel, Peter Littman (drums); Bill Loughborough (chromatic tympani). Producer: Richard Bock. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California on February 15, 1954 and The Forum Theatre, Los Angeles, California on July 24, 25 & 31, 1956. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna. This 1995 release brings some Chet Baker rarities to CD for the first time while commemorating photographer William Claxton's eponymous book. Representing the jazz legend in his early years, the selections heard on YOUNG CHET are taken from two recording dates, the first in 1954, and the second two years later. Baker was 25 and 27 years old respectively. This reissue is testament to Chet Baker's innate talent for music, including his ability to play trumpet with great lyrical insight and conceptual maturity. Always dedicated to reviving obscure tunes, he breathes new life into Kai Winding's 1949 composition, "A Nighton Bop Mountain," employing the talents of Bill Loughborough on a percussion instrument known alternatively as the chromatic tympani or boobams. Baker also performs a light and airy version of Miles Davis' 1951 blues, "Down." An especially lively piano solo from Bobby Timmons marks the latter, while the trumpeter himself plays with an unerring melodic shrewdness. SKU: 1005851

Unspeakable
Personnel: Bill Frisell (guitar); The 858 Strings (strings); Steve Bernstein (trumpet); Adam Dorn (synthesizer); Tony Scherr (bass guitar); Kenny Wollesen (drums); Don Alias (percussion). Recording information: The Village North, Hollywood,CA; Eric's PLace, Los Angeles, CA. On UNSPEAKABLE, Bill Frisell blends his distinctively lush, cerebral guitar style with the easy feel of his 1990s Americana-themed albums and a bit of the avant-garde sensibility of his '80s work, while never directly referencing either of these phases. In fact, the overall sound of UNSPEAKABLE is something new for Frisell--with a few notable exceptions, the record leans toward groove-heavy jams. The presence of horns, Adam Dorn's synthesizer, and the 858 Strings (a violin/viola/cello trio employed throughout the album for accent and effect) brings to mind, at times, the orchestrated, cinematic funk of '70s-era Isaac Hayes ("White Fang"), and, at others, '60s lounge music ("Del Close"). But this is not to say that Frisell has discarded his trademark avant-chamber sensibility. On "D. Sharpe" and "Gregory C.," he creates deeply introspective, atmospheric pieces with help from the 858 Strings and Hal Willner's turntables and samples. Experimental (albeit groove-based) sounds wind through "Stringbean" and the unsettling murmur of "Old Sugar Bear." Overall, the combination of soulful grooves and exploratory impulses, superb arrangements, and fine musicianship (with Frisell's trademark pyrotechnics lending both sophistication and edge) makes UNSPEAKABLE one of the most musically integrated and modern albums of the guitarist's career. Dexter Blows Hot And Cool
Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Robinson (trumpet); Carl Perkins (piano); Leroy Vinnegar (bass); Chuck Thompson (drums). Includes liner notes by Jon Clare. DEXTER BLOWS HOT AND COOL was released at the outset of the saxophonist's hard-bop period. Often referred to as the horn player who served as the bridge between swing and bop styles, Gordon lives up to the definition with his combination of edgy, harmonic complexity and cool, Lester Young-inspired lyricism. An outstanding example of the latter can be found in the practically flawless version of "Cry Me A River," in which Gordon's tenor paints sound pictures of exquisite, aching beauty. The driving, exuberant energy of such tracks as "Rhythm Mad" and "I Hear Music" shows that, while Dexter was influenced heavily by the swing saxophonists, heis still firmly rooted in the bop movement and owes as much to Parker as he does to Hawkins and Young. But Gordon's style is his own, as evidenced by his bright, earthy tone and unique expressive vocabulary. Marked by variety, strong compositions, and a fine group of backing musicians (including Carl Perkins on piano), this set indeed shows the hornsman making good on the title of the disc. SKU: 6529883

Singles
Travis: Francis Healy (vocals); Andy Dunlop (guitar); Douglas Payne (bass guitar); Neil Primrose (drums). When Travis burst onto the American scene in 2000 with the ubiquitous "Why Does It Always Rain on Me," most Stateside listeners assumed that the Scottish foursome was a proverbial overnight sensation. In fact, the group had been making the scene in the UK for nearly five years, garnering rabid media attention and racking up an impressive string of hits. SINGLES sets the record straight, collecting many of the band's most popular works and adding "Walking in the Sun," a newly recorded track. Of course, fans have always championed Travis's tuneful mix of 1970s-inspired singer/songwriter rock and emotive modern pop of the Jeff Buckley/Radiohead variety. Less angst-ridden than either of the aforementioned acts, the band's gently strummed acoustic guitars and smooth vocals often recall Bread with a tougher rhythm section and a dose of Fleetwood Mac's dark California poetry. In addition, the singles' sweeping production style imbues the music with a deep melancholy reminiscent of '60s folk rock. SINGLES ably compiles many of Travis's finest recorded moments, serving as a perfect introduction for US listeners. SKU: 6574904

Still Crazy After All These Years (Remastered And Expanded)
Full title: Still Crazy After All These Years. Personnel: Sivuca (vocals, accordion); Patti Austin, Phoebe Snow, Art Garfunkel (vocals); Hugh McCracken, Joe Beck, John Tropea, Pete Carr, Jerry Friedman (electric guitar); Toots Thielemans (harmonica); David Sanborn, Mike Brecker, Phil Woods, Eddie Daniels (saxophone); Leon Pendarvis, Richard Tee (piano); Bob James (electric piano); Barry Beckett, Ken Asher (keyboards); David Hood, Gordon Edwards, Tony Levin (bass guitar); Grady Tate, Roger Hawkins, Steve Gadd (drums); Ralph McDonald (percussion); Rev. Jessy Dixon & The Chicago Community Choir, Valerie Simpson (background vocals). Paul Simon. Producers: Paul Simon; Phil Ramone; Art Garfunkel. STILL CRAZY marked the end of one era for Simon and pointed toward the beginning ofanother. Simon was always the kind of artist whose growth could be easily measured from album to album, as he progressed from and expanded upon his previous work. The songs here are the furthest logical extensions of the songwriting style he developed in the early '70s. The musical and lyrical sophistication of said style is at its apex; it was the best Paul Simon album possible at that time. From the brooding sexual disconsolation of "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" to the the barely veiled psychosis of the title track, STILL CRAZY is full of expertly crafted songs of neurosis and disaffection. Also at its peak is the Randy Newmanesque irony Simon was fond of practicing in the '70s, as on "You're Kind" and "Have A Good Time." Listeners must have thought there was nowhere left for Simon to go after this seeming creative peak. Little did they know, they hadn't heard nothin' yet. SKU: 6564902

Blue
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano); James Taylor (acoustic guitar); Stephen Stills (guitar, bass); Sneaky Pete (pedal steel guitar); Russ Kunkel (drums). Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. Joni Mitchell's fourth album maintained the confessional style of its predecessors, but her biographical epistles were here infused with greater maturity. Although her lyrics remained personal, Mitchell drew upon their described scenarios to express a greater context. Stephen Stills and James Taylor added sympathetic accompaniment, but the album's musicaltextures were defined by the singer's use of guitar, piano and dulcimer. Mitchell's vocals showed a new depth and range absent from earlier work, emphasizing Blue's important place in her maturation as an artist. She never returned to folk after this release, she spied a bigger world for her lyrics and eclectic ideas of song. SKU: 5047261

Sleep Dirt
Personnelincludes: Frank Zappa (guitar, keyboards, percussion); Thana Harris (vocals); Bruce Fowler (trombone); George Duke (keyboards); Ruth Underwood (marimba, vibraphone, percussion); Dave Parlato, Patrick O'Hearn, James Youman (bass); Chester Thompson, Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman (drums). Digitally remastered by Bob Stone. Always a prolific, restless artist, Frank Zappa was constantly recording. The songs on his 1979 release SLEEP DIRT, which stem from as early as 1974, were originally intended for release on a planned four-platter package, but when the record company balked, they were eventually issued separately. Drawing on the talents of such stalwart accompanists as George Duke, Ruth Underwood, and Terry Bozzio, SLEEP DIRT is an intricate, multi-textured record. Initially all instrumental, the CD version was released with soprano vocalist Thana Harris on three tracks. SLEEP DIRT opens with "Filthy Habits," a minor-key, somewhat Spanish-sounding workout. The stately, keyboard-dominated "Flambay" follows, with tinkling marimbas and lyrical bass work, sequing into "Spider of Destiny." These are not so much songs as compositions, mini-operas composed of distinct, often skewed melodic runs. "Time is Money" features the distinctive jazzy, intricate excursions that characterize much of Zappa's "serious" work, but the title track is a surprisingly gentle acoustic number featuring FZ's lovely guitar playing. With its five songs sprawling unhurriedly; this is serious stuff, despite punning titles like "Regyptian Strut" and "The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution." SKU: 1007106
