Born To Run
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitar); Steve Van Zandt (vocals); Suki Lahav (violin); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); David Sanborn (baritone saxophone); Clarence Clemons (saxophone, background vocals); Randy Brecker (trumpet, flugelhorn); Danny Federici (organ); Roy Bittan (keyboards, glockenspiel, background vocals); David Sancious (keyboards); Garry Tallent, Richard Davis (bass); Max Weinberg, Ernest "Boom" Carter (drums); Mike Appel (background vocals). Producers: Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, Mike Appel. Recorded at The Record Plant, New York, and 914 Sound Studio, Blauvelt, New York. BORN TO RUN is the album that turned Springsteen from a phenomenon into a superstar. His first couple of releases found Bruce working out his fascination with Dylan and Van Morrison on earthy, wordy, folk-rock-R&B tunes full of soul and punch. On BORN TO RUN, Springsteen became even more ambitious, synthesizing Spectorian production with Orbison-esque drama and Duane Eddy-influenced guitar work, creating something grand enough to be called rock opera but too proletarian to ever claim that title. BORN TO RUN was also the firstalbum where the Boss began to crystallize his recurring theme of working class America's doomed-but-passionate rage against its circumstances. With the earnestness and emotion that bursts forth from Springsteen's street poems, the album is never less than exhilarating, and songs like "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" (a tongue-in-cheek history of the E Street Band) provide humor. "She's The One" puts the Bo Diddley beat to its most effective post-'50s use, and the title track is Springsteen's quintessential underdog epic. SKU: 1083092

We're Outta Here (The Ramones' Last Show)
WE'RE OUTTA HERE! comes packaged with a videocassette that includes footage of The Ramones' final concert as well as interviews and past band performances. The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (vocals, guitar); C.J. Ramone (vocals, bass); Marky Ramone (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Lars Frederiksen, Tim Armstrong, Lemmy Kilmister, Dee Dee Ramone, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Ben Shepard. Recorded live at The Palace, Los Angeles, California on August 6, 1996. Includes liner notes by CJ Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, Eddie Vedder, Marky Ramone, Lemmy Kilmister and Johnny Ramone. OK, alright, that's it. We really mean it this time. The Ramones are gone for good. No more leather jackets, two-minute songs or counting off "1-2-3-4." After 22 years, 2263 shows, 19 albums and eight members, the band credited with kicking off the punk revolutioncalled it quits. WE'RE OUTTA HERE is their final farewell. Recorded in Los Angeles, this live album packs together 32 songs including Ramones classics ("Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Wanna Be Sedated"), favorite covers ("Do You Wanna Dance"), and goofy cartoon themes ("Spiderman"). Naturally enough, famous friends and fans such as Lemmy Kilmister, Eddie Vedder, Rancid members Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen, and Soundgarden's Chris Cornell and Ben Shepard line up to pay homage to these scruffy icons. Prodigal son Dee Dee Ramone (aka Dee Dee King) even returns to salute his former bandmates. As per usual, the Ramones barely stop long enough for Joey Ramone to say a word or two between songs. Check out the accompanying video documentary and all that's left to say is "Gabba Gabba Hey!" SKU: 1003693

White People (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Handsome Boy Modeling School: Dan The Automator, Prince Paul. Additional personnelinclude: Chester Bennington, Chino Moreno, De La Soul, Del The Funky Homosapien, Dres, El-P, Franz Ferdinand, Grand Wizard Theodore, Jazzy Jay, John Oates, Julee Cruise, Mike Patton, Mike Shinoda, Paula Frazer, Pharrell Williams, The Mars Volta, Tim Meadows, Barrington Levy, Finesse, Jaime Cullen, Cage , Cat Power. Recording information: 2004. Nathaniel Merriweather (AKA Dan the Automator) and Chest Rockwell (AKA Prince Paul) present the second installment in their ongoing saga. As with the duo's debut, SO... HOW'S YOUR GIRL, it's a comedic love den for the experimental breeding of hip-hop with whatever strikes their mood, be it rock, reggae, nu-metal, jazz, electronica, or dub. This time the amazingly eclectic guest list includes TV's Father Guido Sarducci, Cat Power, Jack Johnson, members of Linkin Park, Hall & Oates, and Franz Ferdinand, among many others. Surreal advice on dating hygiene alternates with genuine make-out-session-worthy funk (the Prince-esque "Greatest Mistake") and soul (the Otis Redding-esque "Breakdown"). Julee Cruise purrs about tax breaks on "Class System"(with Pharrell Williams), while "Rock and Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This) Part 2" morphs into straight-up AOR rock that may have hip-hop purists thinking they put on the wrong disc. Of course, there are still solid beats and rhymes from Del tha Funkee Homosapien, De La Soul, and others. Throughout WHITE PEOPLE, Merriweather and Rockwell make sure that both their cohorts and their listeners are having a good time. SKU: 6573937

Presto [Remastered]
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, keyboards, bass); Alex Lifeson (acoustic & electric guitars); Neil Peart (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Rupert Hine (keyboards, background vocals). Personnel: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass guitar); Alex Lifeson (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Neil Peart (drums, electronic percussion). Recording information: 08/1989. PRESTO was the first Rush album to be co-produced by the band and Rupert Hine (Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, Howard Jones). Thus, it should come as no surprise that PRESTO is very melodic and one of Rush's most commercial efforts. But the playing is still top notch, and the group creates a very open and straightforward sound--due to cutting back on keyboards and synthesized sounds (which were prominent on the majority of their recordings from the '80s). "Show Don't Tell" opens the album on a (lyrical)cautionary note, and contains slight elements of funk-rock throughout (the first time Rush had experimented with this genre on record). The melancholic "The Pass" deals with the controversial subject of teen suicide, while the rocker "Superconductor" encompasses the ups and downs of being a celebrity. Not all of the band's experiments work--"Scars" is the only point on the album where synth sounds take away from the song, while other tracks are a bit too "clean" sounding when compared to past Rush classics. Still, PRESTO showed that Rush was open to trying new ideas in a decade where rock bands were expected to stick to the basics. SKU: 6573295

Greatest Hits
Mott The Hoople:Ian Hunter (vocals, guitar, piano); Mick Ralphs, Ariel Bender (guitar); Morgan Fisher (piano); Verden Allen (organ); Dale Griffin (drums). Producers: Mott The Hoople, David Bowie, Ian Hunter, Overend Watts, Dale Griffin. Compilation producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded between 1972 & 1974. Includes liner notes by Ben Edmonds. Released in 1975, as Mott the Hoople was slowly disintegrating, GREATEST HITS is a slightly odd representation of the band's years at Columbia. Although the band's breakthrough hit was its 1972 version the David Bowie-penned "All the Young Dudes," no other songs from that glam-influenced album, the band's biggest seller, are found here. Instead, the 10 tracks focus on the follow-ups, dryly cynical bar-band rock cuts dominated by the piano-organ interplay of Ian Hunter and Verdun Allen (later replaced by Morgan Fisher), as well as Hunter's sneering vocals and caustic lyrics. "The Ballad of Mott the Hoople" is a clear highlight, as is the oddly somber "Hymn for the Dudes" and the hard-rocking "Honaloochie Boogie." Casual fans looking for "Young Dudes"-like glam rock will be disappointed, but this is probably a purer picture of the band. SKU: 1000842

Low Spark Of The High Heeled Boys [Remastered]
Traffic includes: Steve Winwood (vocals, guitar, piano, organ); Jim Capaldi (vocals, percussion); Rick Grech (violin, bass); Chris Wood (flute, saxophone; Jim Gordon (drums); Reebop Kwaku Baah (percussion). Producer: Steve Winwood. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Recorded at Island Studios, London, England in September 1971. Originally released on Island (9180). Includes liner notes by John McDermott. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The wandering jazzy music into which Traffic gradually flowed, hit a peak with this exceptional recording. The title track, with its perplexing lyrics, reaches numerous musical heights during its 12 minutes of life as it repeatedly comes back to SteveWinwood's accomplished vocal. Equally impressive, although shorter, is "Hidden Treasure," highlighting what a good musician the late Chris Wood was. Finally, the band's loyal anchor, "Gentleman" Jim Capaldi, takes lead on the cheeky (and sexist) "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone." The power of Traffic was in the atmosphere and space they created; this captures it. SKU: 1072415

Grace
Personnel: Jeff Buckley (vocals, guitar, harmonium, organ, dulcimer, tabla); Gary Lucas, Michael Tighe (guitar); Loris Holland (organ); Matt Johnson (vibraphone, drums, percussion); Mick Grondahl (bass); Misha Masud (tabla). With GRACE, his first full-length statement as a bandleader, songwriter-guitarist Jeff Buckley sets out upon a road less travelled, avoiding the safe and predictable in favor of the ecstatic and the personal. Not that such obvious influences as the Beatles and Led Zeppelin have disappeared from this young talent's music. Buckley's voice is an exquisite, malleable instrument, and from his daring vaults into the upper registers to his long, enraptured middle-register ornaments and moans, he suggests the breakthroughs of a young Robert Plant or Van Morrison. Songs like "The Last Goodbye" (with its coy slide intro and ragaish string backgrounds) and "Lover You Should've Come Over" (with its late Beatles harmonies and Edith Piaf vocal ornaments) are powerful evocations of failing relationships ("too young to hold on, and too old to just break free and run"). "Lilac Wine" and "Hallelujah" feature his glassy translucent guitar and poignant vocals in mystical, folkish settings, while "Dream Brother" achieves an almost Doors-like melancholy. Elsewhere, Buckley showcases his new band's power on "Mojo Pin" and "Eternal Life," which drawupon blues imagery and metaphors to create a subtle, hard-rocking atmosphere. SKU: 1003425

So Far So Good (A Collection Of The Best Of Bryan Adams)
Personnel includes: Bryan Adams (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Tina Turner (vocals); Keith Scott (guitar); Tommy Mandel (Hammond B-3, keyboards); Bill Payne (keyboards); Dave Taylor (bass); Mickey Curry (drums); Lou Gramm (background vocals); Steve Smith, Billy Joe Walker. Producers: Bryan Adams, Bob Clearmountain, Robert John "Mutt" Lange. By 1993, when Bryan Adams released his first collection of greatest hits, he had enjoyed 12 years in the music business during a span that had seen hot trends like new wave and late '80s hair metal fall by the wayside. Adams managed to stay popular by sticking with an ear-pleasing brand of rock & roll that veered between edgy, bar-band style riff rock to more earnest, American-style roots rock in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger. SO FAR SO GOOD gathers all the essential Adams tracks from his hugely popular '80s albums. This set of melodic rockers, inlcuding "Run to You," "This Time" "Kids Wanna Rock," and "Summer of '69" will be familiar to anyone who was near an FM radio during the era. Adams is a likeable rebel, a tough and tender troubadour singing songs that maynot have been taken seriously by rock critics, but which nevertheless had resonance for millions of people around the world. Between ballads like "Heaven" and "Everything I Do (I Do it for You") and the chest-thumping frat-guy rock of "Somebody," this set shows the immense range of one of Canada's most popular musicians. Stay Down
Tracks 12-16 were previously available on the EP "A Bag Of Blue Sparks." Two Lone Swordsmen includes: Keith Tenniswood, Andrew Weatherall. The Autistic Bongo Novices: Mickey Powers (various instruments); Bob "Honey" Dubray (guitar); Chip Rascal (drums). This haunting disc of dark and delicious techno is one of a series of Matador/Warp co-releases.Leave it to Matador to find the coolest artists in a genre glutted with flaccid bandwagoneers. Two Lone Swordsmen open up with "Hope We Never Surface," a beautiful and hypnotic track that might call to mind To Rococo Rot or even Oval. But by the next track they're on to a deep electro-groove thing. And a groove thing it is. They keep it danceable throughout most of the disc--danceable and dark. STAY DOWN is full of hidden details that will reveal themselves through repeated listenings. SKU: 4123041

Inner Thought Zone
Early Felt was always an uneasy compromise between Maurice Deebank's elegant, embellished guitar work and Lawrence Hayward's smart, caustic, Bob Dylan/Lou Reed-inspired art-rock leanings. It was little surprise, therefore, when Deebank bid Felt a bitter farewell following 1984's exquisite THE SPLENDOR OF FEAR, going on to record 1984's INNER THOUGHT ZONE, an understated solo masterpiece of multi-tracked composition where the creativity suppressed in Felt was finally given full rein. The album works the charms of early-'80s British indie rock to considerably artier ends, as layered electric and acoustic guitars meander in subdued splendor. Deebank's classical filigree, dazzling, Television-style chords, and spangled arpeggiosentwine around Dave Elson's spidery bass lines on "The Watery Song," "Four Corners of the Earth," and "Dance of Deliverance," tracing the opulent textures of a singularly psychedelic tapestry. For this 1992 reissue, Deebank re-emerged to co-produce four new tracks with keyboardist Jon Cotton; "So Serene" and "A Tale from Scriabin's Lonely Trail" are intricate instrumentals every bit as scintillating as those presented on the album proper. Live At The Royal Festival Hall (27th November 1989)
Personnel: John McLaughlin (acoustic & electric guitars); Kai Eckhardt (electric bass); Trilok Gurtu (percussion). Recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall, London, England on November 27, 1989. John McLaughlin, known for his successful experiments with rock fusion, Indian modal music, orchestral music, and Spanish guitar stylings, here plays virtuoso jazz on acoustic guitar, accompanied by the brilliant electric bass player Kai Eckhardt and TrilokGurtu's unique, spellbinding percussion. They perform mostly original tunes, at once complex, rhythmically diverse, harmonically advanced, and beautifully melodic. The group really burns on "Florianapolis" and "Mother Tongues," the latter of which features blazing solos by all three players. The concert ends with a moving blues for the then- Polish Solidarity leader Lech Walesa, where McLaughlin's haunting, melancholy playing soars with passion. The tune climaxes with a wonderful vocal duet between the guitarist and Gurtu. SKU: 6524055

Sensual Journey
Personnel includes: Will Downing (vocals); Vinx (scat vocals); Lee Ritenour (guitar, keyboards); Blake English, Michael Thompson, Russell Malone (guitar);Hubert Laws (flute); Gerald Albright, Boney James (saxophone); Ray Brown (trumpet); John Beasley (piano); Kowan Paul (keyboards, bass, programming); Ronnie Foster, Rex Rideout (keyboards); Stefon Harris (vibraphone); Ronnie Garrett, Marcus Miller (bass); John "J.R." Robinson, Will Kennedy (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Luis Conte (percussion); Lisa Vaughan, Phil Perry, Vesta Williams, Darcy Aldridge (background vocals). Producers include: Will Downing, Lee Ritenour, Kashif, Sandy Stein, Rex Rideout. Engineers include: Don Murray, Blake English, Michael Thompson. The fact that R&B crooner Will Downing's SENSUAL JOURNEY is delivered to us via a jazz label should be a clue that the singer, obviously no jazz artist, has a sophisticated, mature musical message to impart. Downing's style manages to sound completely contemporary without ever delving into the prefabricated, hip-hop-influenced style of so many other R&B ballad specialists. SENSUAL JOURNEY is a personal, intimate recording. There's no phalanx of producers and programmers at work here; instead Downing is appropriately accompanied by such smooth-jazz legends as Boney James and Lee Ritenour, and even straight-ahead jazz vibes master Stefon Harris. Downing's warm, liquid voice moves organically through these arrangements, with emotional communication clearly its first priority. That's what ultimately makes SENSUAL JOURNEY a success on its own terms. SKU: 1072883

AttenCHUN [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Bone Crusher, Killer Mike, T.I., Dru, Lady Ice, Marcus, Young "Shawty" Hughley, David Banner, Hezo, Dano, Jack Frost, Rico Love, Chyna Whyte, Bizar, Goodie Mob, Lil' Pete, Chris Hardnett, Baby B (rap vocals); Jermaine Dupri (spoken vocals); L. Roc, Avery Johnson, Billy Hume (various instruments); Craig Love (guitar). Producers include: Priest, L Roc, Avery Johnson, Mixzo, Craig Love. Recorded at Sound Lab, FY Stations, Seven Eight, The Zone, Atlanta, Georgia; Access Studios, Marietta, Georgia. ATTENCHUN!: the drill-sergeant title of Bone Crusher's debut pretty much sums up his attitude and style. While Outkast (and to a lesser degree Goodie Mob, Killer Mike, et al) cloak their crunk in endless folds of playful language and the SkrewedUp Klick filters it through syrup-infused hallucinogenic lethargy, Bone Crusher is the unrefined enforcer of the Dirty South world, so economical in language that he even fiercely dismisses his own intro. Jermaine Dupri sums it up in the opening of "Never Scared," "if you seen my man, you understand, you gotta movea.get outta da way.' Said single stomps in with the raw power of King Kong, potent and undeniable, completely legit, and a banging club track to boot. From that point on, ATTENCHUN never lets up, with haunting, fitful tracks augmented by guest shots from seemingly the whole south, from veterans like the aforementioned Dupri and Goodie Mob to unstoppable up-and-comers like Killer Mike, David Banner, and Lil' Jon. Perfect Stranger, The (Boulez Conducts Zappa)
Tracks 1, 2 & 4 are performed by the Ensemble InterContemporain, conducted by Pierre Boulez. Tracks 3, 5, 6 & 7 are performed by The Barking Pumpkin Digital Gratification Consort. The Ensemble InterContemporain includes: Pierre Boulez (conductor); Lawrence Beauregard, Sophie Cherrier (flute); Lazlo Hadady, Didier Pateau (oboe); Alain Damiens, Paul Meyer (clarinet); Jean-Marie Lamothe (bassoon); Antoine Cure, Jean-Jacques Gaudon (trumpet); Jerome Naulais, Benny Sluchin (trombone); Gerard Buquet (tuba); Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Alain Neveux(piano); Frederic Stochl (acoustic bass); Vincent Bauer, Michel Cerutti, Daniel Ciampolini (percussion). Ensemble InterContemporain recorded at Ircam, Paris, France on Janurary 10-11, 1984. Includes liner notes by Frank Zappa. Half of THE PERFECT STRANGER features works by Frank Zappa conducted by Pierre Boulez utilizing his Ensemble Intercontemporain orchestra and recorded in Paris. The other half is Zappa himself under the moniker of the Barking Pumpkin Digital Gratification Consort. He refers to the album in its entirety as seven dance pieces. Each of these instrumental pieces embodies an accompanying story and occasional sound effects (or simply non-traditional instrumentation). These works are modern in a way which is decidedly not modern today; that is to say, they celebrate notions of atonality, angularity and episodic construction which resonate with the heady experimentation of the first few decades of the twentieth century. Edgar Varese, Charles Ives, and even bits of Stravinsky clearly found a comfortable home in Frank Zappa's heart and mind. SKU: 1007297

Only You
Personnel: Harry Connick, Jr. (vocals, conductor, piano); James Greene, Charles Goold (alto saxophone); Jerry Weldon, Mike Karn (tenor saxophone); Dave Schumacher (baritone saxophone); Roger Ingram, Derrick Gardner, Leroy Jones, Joe Magnarelli (trumpet); Mark Mullins, Joe Barati, Craig Klein, John Allred (trombone); Neal Caine (bass); Arthur latin II (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Alex Acuna (percussion). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California in 2003. In the liner notes of ONLY YOU, crooner Harry Connick tells how the impetus for the album was Columbia honcho Donny Ienner's request for the singer to record some songs from Ienner's youth (1950s/'60s hits). Whether this was an entreaty or an ultimatum, Connick sagely turned it to his advantage, inching up a decade or two from his usual selection process and cherry-picking some of the finest tunes from that era (even if a couple were originally written decades earlier). Connick breaks some new stylistic ground too, dipping into the country songbook ("You Don't Know Me") and even slipping into doo-wop territory ("I Only Have Eyes for You" and the title track"). The most impressive thing about ONLY YOU is that instead of twisting himself into a stylistic pretzel in order to accommodate these varied modes, Connick artfully reinvents these tunes (not only as vocalist, but as arranger/conductor) to suit his own Sinatra-influenced pop/jazz style. His treatment of the aforementioned "I Only Have Eyes for You," for example, brings out the inherent spectral qualities of the song, turning it into an ethereal tour de force for his moody arrangement andcool vocal. Throughout the album, Connick manages to turn such tricks consistently, proving himself an able interpreter of more than one chapter in the Great American Songbook. SKU: 6547935

Cure For Pain
Morphine includes: Mark Sandman (vocals, bass); Billy Conway, Jerome Deupree (drums). Morphine's 1992 debut, GOOD, was a pleasant break from the rock music norm, but the band improved dramatically on their original blueprint with their next release a year later, CURE FOR PAIN. For starters, there was a line-up change--original drummer Jerome Dupree was replaced by Billy Conway (a former bandmate of Morphine leader Mark Sandman's in the blues outfit Treat Her Right). But the real story here is the abundance of top-notch compositions and perfectly restrained performances, adding up to arguably Morphine's finest and most consistent release. Included are such lounge-rock classics as the laid-back "Buena," the seductive "Candy," and the gleefully cacophonic "Thursday." With the underground buzz reaching a feverish pitch shortly after the release of CUREFOR PAIN, Morphine would be signed to a major-label deal just after one more exceptional release. SKU: 1007192

Chant Down Babylon
Personnel includes: Bob Marley, Erykah Badu, Guru, Rakim, Krayzie Bone, Busta Rhymes, Flipmode Squad, Lauryn Hill, Lost Boyz, Mr. Cheeks, MC Lyte, The Marley Brothers, The Ghetto Youths Crew, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Chuck D, The Roots, Black Thought. Producers: The Marley Boyz, Stephen Marley, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry. Engineers include: Bomzai Caruso, Error Brown, Comissioner Gordon. Includes liner notes by Harry Allen. CHANT DOWN BABYLON, which pairs Bob Marley's music with performances from a select group of urban pop stars, is strong enough to quell even the most skeptic Marley aficionado. Stephen Marley brought heavyweights from the worlds of hip-hop and R&B for this project, all of whom seem very familiar with Marley's work and bring a level of earnestness to the proceedings that demonstrate their reverence forthe reggae great. Krayzie Bone offers a rendition of "Rebel Music" that is one of the album's high points, while Erykah Badu oozes fiery soul over "No More Trouble" as through she were standing right next to Bob in the studio. Other standouts include Aeorsmith's appearance on "Roots Rock Reggae" and Rakim's addition to "Concrete Jungle." The excellent CHANT DOWN BABYLON functions like a rare glimpse of what Marley's music may have been like if he were recording today. SKU: 5065173
