Grammy Nominees 2002
2002's crop of Grammy nominees is an agreeably eclectic selection, includingthe surprising perennial Bob Dylan, David Gray, the Backstreet Boys, James Taylor, and of course hardy old rockers U2. Relative newcomers India.Arie and Alicia Keys are justly rewarded for their debut efforts with the bouncy, acerbic "Video" and the stellar "Fallin'" respectively, while Outkast's infernally catchy "Ms. Jackson" is another welcome inclusion. Newcomers Train contribute their agreeably mainstream "Drops of Jupiter," while the hillbilly Monkees, A.K.A. the Soggy Bottom Boys from OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU, perform the ubiquitous "Man of Constant Sorrow." British R&B singer Craig David shows he can hold his own with the big boys with "Fill Me In," and REM's "Imitation of Life" is a fine late-model contribution from a now-vintage band. Bob Dylan's "Honest With Me" amply demonstrates that this venerable old institution still has legs; the same could arguably be said of Elton John's Beatlesesque "I Want Love," which finds him reunited with old cohorts to beneficial effect. Greatest Hits Vol.2
Personnel includes: Linda Ronstadt (vocals); Dan Dugmore (acoustic, electric & steel guitars); Waddy Wachtel (electric & slide guitar, background vocals); Charles Veal (violin); Dennis Karmazyn (cello); David Sanborn (saxophone); Don Grolnick (acoustic & electric piano, clavinet); Andrew Gold (piano, clavinet); Bill Payne (keyboards); Steve Forman (marimba); Kenny Edwards (bass, mandolin, background vocals); Russ Kunkel (drums); Rick Marotta (drums, syn-drums, cowbell); Peter Asher (tambourine, maracas, cowbell, background vocals);Karla Bonoff, Don Henley, Nicolette Larson (background vocals). Recorded at The Sound Factory & Record One, Los Angeles, California from 1976 to 1979. This eclectic collection circa '76-'80 underscores a newfound rock & roll assertiveness in the rootsy rock diva as she gleefully covers material like Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." and the Stones' "Tumbling Dice." In fact, one can hear the not-so-distant rumbles of the punk rock revolution as Rondstadt gives Deborah Harry a run for her money on "How Do I Make You." In another context, one also hears the natural Mexicali strains emerging on her beautifully realized version of Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou," a decade before the two groundbreaking collections of Mexican songs dedicated to her father. Continuing her established practice of introducing the best in singer-songwriters, we have her definitive takes on Warren Zevon's "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" and Karla Bonoff's haunting "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me." Tribute To Jack Johnson, A
Personnel: MilesDavis (trumpet); Steve Grossman (soprano saxophone); Herbie Hancock (keyboards); John McLaughlin (guitar); Michael Henderson (bass); Billy Cobham (drums). Producer: Teo Macero. Reissue producer: Nedra Olds-Neal. Includes liner notes by Miles Davis and Chip Deffaa. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). As Miles Davis gained more experience working with modern blues, the intellectual substance of jazz still dominated his music melodically. But with each successive project, the trumpeter looked to get on the good foot and approximate the rhythmic context of popular dance musics. A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first Afro-American heavyweight boxing champion, but these two long, extended works stand on their own as great music, among the most deeply-felt pieces in the trumpeter's post-IN A SILENT WAY/BITCHES BREW canon. The infectuous boogaloo groove of "Right Off" signals a major change in Miles' interpretation of the rhythm section, as John McLaughlin's crunching, wah-wah-inflected power chords dance fervently around the relentless backbeat of Fender bassist Michael Henderson and drummer Billy Cobham. Gone are the trappings of bebop harmonies and modern jazz rhythms, save for Miles' dramatic solo, with its long, linear melodies and nasty blues inflections. Affectionate parodies of Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix abound on "Right Off" and the haunting, surreal "Yesternow," which is a contemporary update of the classic Miles/Gil Evans mood piece. The groove accrues momentum in a dreamy, backwards manner, keying off Henderson's hypnotic modal figures and McLaughlin's speech-like figures, culminating in an atonal distortion solo by free jazz pioneer Sonny Sharrock over a Band Of Gypsies-styled rhythm vamp. New Moon Shine
Personnel includes: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar); Danny Kortchmar (acoustic guitar); Michael Landau (guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Mark O'Connor (violin); Michael Brecker, Bob Mintzer (tenor saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet); Dave Bargeron (trombone); Don Grolnick (piano, organ, synthesizer); Clifford Carter (synthesizer, programming); Jimmy Johnson, Tony Levin (bass); Carlos Vega, Steve Jordan, Steve Gadd (drums); Don Alias (percussion). Recorded at Skline and Power Station Studios, New York, New York and A&M and Studio F Studios, Los Angeles, California. Following the brilliant NEVER DIE YOUNG, James Taylor offers the equally magnificent NEW MOON SHINE. Taylor's middle-aged wisdom is in full bloom with this beautifully crafted, yet often darker, set of songs. Produced again by Taylor's friend Don Grolnick, this album is less adventurous musically than past efforts, but the subject matter is far and away some of the most poignant and heartfelt of Taylor's career. The opening "Copperline" is a tour of a fictional town, told with a longing for lost youth. "Shed A Little Light" is a masterpiece of lyrical spiritualism calling for a strengthening of brotherhood. "The Frozen Man" wistfully paints a dark picture of a lost fisherman brought back many yearsafter his death to find an unfriendly world. On a reassuring note, "Oh Brother" wishes peace for a fellow man in trouble. Things aren't all gloomy, though, as the radiant "(I've Got To) Stop Thinkin' 'Bout That," "Slap Leather" and Sam Cooke's "Everybody Loves To Cha Cha Cha" surely prove. Taylor closes with one of his most touching performances on "The Water Is Wide." SKU: 1005067

Surrealistic Pillow
This newly remastered 2003 deluxe edition contains bonus tracks. Jefferson Airplane: Grace Slick (vocals, recorder, piano, organ); Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Marty Balin (vocals, guitar); Jack Casady (guitar, bass); Spencer Dryden (percussion). Recorded at RCA Victor's Music Center Of The World, Hollywood, California. Originally released on RCA Victor (3766). Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin and Bill Thompson. From the opening, hard-edged chords of "She Has Funny Cars," it is apparent that SURREALISTIC PILLOW, Jefferson Airplane's sophomore effort, is a far more spiky beast than the band's debut. The public must have felt that as well--the album became not only San Francisco's soundtrack to the Summer Of Love, but all of America's. It spawned two Top-10 classics("Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit") and established the Airplane as one of the main pop voices of the cultural revolution. Some of the newfound dynamism can be attributed to personnel changes. Singer-keyboardist Grace Slick, who joined the Airplane following a stint in the mildly successful Great Society, had a unique artistic gleam her predecessor, Signe Anderson, never possessed--both of the aforementioned hits were songs she'd written for her former band. And new percussionist Spencer Dryden could make the music shake with heretofore unseen polyrhythms, or walk a straight line with militaristic precision. SURREALISTIC PILLOW's other strengths lay in the band's boldly diverse sound. Effortlessly gliding from twisted Motown (the electrified "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds"), to Dylanesque rock (Balin's "Plastic Fantastic Lover") to an acoustic, psychedelic bluegrass instrumental (Kaukonen's "Embryonic Journey"), the Airplane proved themselves able to at once interpret the cultural tide and make it radio-friendly. Good Old Boys
Full performer name: John Hartford & The Hartford Stringband. John Hartford & The Hartford Stringband: John Hartford (vocals, violin, banjo); Chris Sharp (guitar); Bob Carlin, Larry Perkins (banjo); Mike Compton (mandolin); Mark Schatz (bass). Recorded at Overdub Lane, Durham, North Carolina from September to December 1998 and in February 1999. Includes liner notes by Tom Piazza. John Hartford has created a broad and varied body of work. 1999's GOOD OLD BOYS was released with his Hartford Stringband. Skilled players one and all, their interaction is so natural that a casual ease pervades the whole album. The centerpiece here is the 10-and-a-half minute long "The Cross-Eyed Child," which finds Hartford recounting a tale of yet another of his musical heroes (he's long delighted in celebrating his mentors, teachers and influences). The long spoken passages are accompanied in a manner which underscores the band's interest in the story--never once does it seem like they're merely keeping the pulse going, or biding their timeawaiting their chance to play with greater abandon on the choruses. Along with MARK TWANG, AERO-PLAIN, and DOWN ON THE RIVER, GOOD OLD BOYS shows yet another side of John Hartford's wide-ranging musical interests. SKU: 1025963

Still Alive And Well/Captured Live
2 LPs on 1 CD: STILL ALIVE AND WELL (1973)/CAPTURED LIVE! (1976). Includes liner notes by Tony Russell. STILL ALIVE AND WELL: Personnel: Johnny Winter (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Jeremy Steig (flute); Mark Klingman (piano); Randy Jo Hobbs (bass); Richard Hughes (drums). CAPTURED LIVE!: Personnel includes: Johnny Winter, Randy Jo Hobbs, Richard Hughes, Floyd Radford. Winter's first release after a brief retirement/drying-out period, 1973's STILL ALIVE AND WELL, from the title on down, has the feeling of a major comeback, although Winter really hadn't been gone for very long. Produced by longtime collaborator Rick Derringer, who leads the tight and flashy band--also featuring Todd Rundgren and his cohort Mark "Moogy" Klingman--the album is possibly the most pop-oriented release of Winter's tenure at Columbia. Winter's amiable versions of the Stones' "Silver Train" and "Let It Bleed," along with Dan Hartman's "Can't You Feel It," are among his most radio-friendly work. On the other hand, 1976's classic CAPTURED LIVE is straight-up blues-rock power. Fronting a scorching quartet featuring second guitarist Floyd Radford, bassist Randy Jo Hobbs and powerhouse drummerRichard Hughes, Winter plays compact, expressive solos with just enough flash. The six lengthy tracks feature as much solid ensemble playing as they do solo showboating, quite unusual for a guitar boogie album from the '70s. The set list is heavy on the covers, ranging from a killer rave-up on "Highway 61 Revisited" to a looser, good-humored take on Bobby Womack's oft-covered "It's All Over Now." SKU: 1045854

I Am Kurious Oranj
The Fall: Mark E. Smith (vocals); Brix Smith (guitar, background vocals); Craig Scanlon (acoustic & electric guitars); Marcia Schofield (keyboards); Steve Hanley (bass); Simon Wolstencroft (drums). Named in honor of a seriesof Swedish softcore films of the '60s, 1988's I AM KURIOUS ORANJ is not a typical Fall album. This is the band's score for a ballet by England's experimental Michael Clark Dance Troupe. Although nearly all of the album's ten songs have vocals, they're necessarily understated, given the music's role as background. As a result, I AM KURIOUS ORANJ is possibly the most low-key release in the band's long and amazingly prolific career. Besides the still rather aggressive title track, the album's highlight is a straightforward and surprisingly lovely version of William Blake's "Jerusalem," probably the most surprising cover ever by a band known for its odd choices in outside material. The CD includes three non-LP bonus tracks, including "Big New Priest," a radically different version of the album's opening track, "New Big Prinz." SKU: 5091251

Love To Love You Baby
Personnel includes: Donna Summer (vocals); Nick Woodland, Pete Bellotte (guitar); Mike Thatcher, Giorgio Moroder (keyboards); Dave King (bass); Martin Harrison (drums); Bernie Brocks (percussion). LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY was the album that started it all, in more ways than one. Although this was not Donna Summer's first recording--in her adopted home of Germany during the early '70s, she'd recorded with such producers asPeter Thomas and the resulting material has been re-released several times over--it was her first with the songwriting and production team of Giorgio Moroder and Pete Belotte. The first fruit of this collaboration, the legendary title track, single-handedly invented the extended disco mix, when an 18-minute version became a dancefloor classic. Summer's blatantly orgasmic moans make Jane Birkin's squeaks on Serge Gainsbourg's similar "Je T'AimeaMoi, Non Plus" sound like she's yawning, and still startle today. Of the others, only the jazzy "Pandora's Box" is entirely up to the title track's standards, but those two songs are nearly two-thirds of the brief album's total running time, while the others are more inconsequential than actively bad. Third Generation Blues
Personnel: Doc Watson (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Richard Watson (guitar); T. Michael Coleman (bass). Recorded at The Loft, Boone, North Carolina and in Falls Church, Virginia. THIRD GENERATION BLUES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. Many of bluegrass legend Doc Watson's best-loved recordings were made with his guitar-playing son Merle, who died at a tragically young age. On THIRD GENERATION BLUES Merle's son Richard takes up the baton, and the result is an album that recalls Doc and Merle's glory days. Doc's calmly intense vocals are as effective as ever. Time may have snuck his voice a bit lower in register, but that only adds to its often-chilling resonance. One of the most interesting aspects of this album is that, while it digs deeps into the folk traditions of American music, it doesn't contain many actual bluegrass songs. From the blues chestnut "Honey Please Don't Go" (more commonly known as "Baby Please Don't Go") to "House of the Rising Sun" and Tim Hardin's folk-rockballad "If I Were A Carpenter," Doc and Richard weave disparate musical strands into an appealing garment that bears an authentic bluegrass veneer. Police And Thieves
Recorded at Black Art Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Includes liner notes by Brian Blevins and David Katz. Junior Murvin, along with co-writer/producerLee Perry, created a certifiable reggae classic in "Police and Thieves." Covered by The Clash and symbolic of its time (the mid-1970s) musically and politically, the song is the centerpiece of an album considered by reggae fans to be one of the greatest albums of the genre. Murvin sings powerful, intense lyrics with a sweet-sounding falsetto voice (recalling Smokey Robinson), while Lee Perry frames the songs with dark, almost haunted tempos, sharp guitar work and seemingly bottomless reverb. Murvin mixes British/Jamaican angst and fury with gospel fervor, and the tunes stick with you long after the CD stops. SKU: 1030544

Road Tested
Personnel: Bonnie Raitt (vocals, acoustic & slide guitars, keyboards); George Marinelli (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin); Bryan Adams (vocals, guitar); Mark T. Jordan (vocals, guitar, mandolin, keyboards); Jackson Browne (vocals, guitar, accordion); Bruce Hornsby (vocals, accordion, piano); Glen Clark (vocals, harmonica, keyboards); Kim Wilson(vocals, harmonica); Charles Brown (vocals, piano); James "Hutch" Hutchinson (vocals, bass); Debra Dobkin (vocals, percussion); Ruth Brown (vocals); Keith Scott (guitar); Marty Grebb (piano); Benmont Tench (Hammond B-3 organ); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Ricky Fatar (drums). Recorded live at the Schnitzer Auditorium, Portland, Oregon on July 11-13, 1995 and the Paramount Theatre, Oakland, California on July 16-19, 1995. ROAD TESTED was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Burning Down The House" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. ROAD TESTED is the first live album of Bonnie Raitt's storied career, and the two-disc set easily gets across the magic she makes at her concerts. Recorded in 1995, at six shows in Portland, Oregon and Oakland, California, Raitt digs deep into her catalog for clever interpretations of blues, soul and even classic new wave songs that have shaped her musical vocabulary. Constantly paying homage to her musical roots, Raitt brings on such idols as Charles and Ruth Brown, as well as contemporary VH-1 co-horts like Bruce Hornsby, Bryan Adams and Jackson Browne, to add to the fireworks. And even though the cameos of these formidable talents add up to some delightful thrills, Raitt's pure singing, biting slide guitar and crack back-up band are the main reasons why she passes this road test with flying colors.
