Sounds Of Science, The
Full title: The Sounds Of Science: The Beastie Boys Anthology. Beastie Boys: Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (rap vocals, guitar); Adam "MCA" Yauch (rap vocals, bass); Mike "Mike D." Diamond (rap vocals, drums). Additional personnel includes: Q-Tip, Biz Markie (rap vocals); Mark "Money Mark" Nishita (keyboards); Kate Schellebach (drums); Eric Bobo (percussion); Mix Master Mike (turntables); Amery Smith, Bucky Baxter, Brooke Williams, Nelson Keane Carse, Paul Vercesi. Producers: Beastie Boys, Rick Rubin, Scott Jarvis, Fatboy Slim. Engineers: Mario Caldato, Jr., Simon Thornton. Includes liner notes and song annotations by The Beastie Boys. "Alive" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performanceby a Duo or Group. Since emerging as a hard-core group from New York City's Lower East Side in 1980, the Beastie Boys have explored the worlds of rap, funk, and punk while simultaneously managing to influence music and society on a grander scale. SOUNDS OF SCIENCE documents all of the band's innovative turns on a beautifully packaged 2-CD set complete with a 77-page booklet brimming over with track-by-track commentary. The care taken in documenting the band's activity up through 1999 is impressive. It's all here, including early punk sides ("Beastie Boys" and "Egg Raid on Mojo," featuring then-member Kate Schellenbach, later of Luscious Jackson), early marriages of rock riffs and hip-hop ("She's on It"), and the frat-goon success of LICENSED TO ILL ("Fight For Your Right," "Brass Monkey"). Also included is the unpredictable trio's groundbreaking work with the Dust Brothers on such mind-blowing sound collages as "Shake Your Rump" and "Shadrach" (presaging Beck by seven years). Even after the boys returned to playing instruments, the results bounced between fat-back instrumentals ("Sabrosa") and hard-rocking masterpieces ("Sabotage"). Throughout the '90s, hip-hop was never far away, whether it was with sci-fi bombs ("Intergalactic") or collaborations with like-minded rap visionaries like Q-Tip ("Get It Together"). SKU: 1025255

Persuasion
Recorded in San Francisco from 1967to 1968. PERSUASION features 5 raw tracks by the Santana band in its most formative period. The music rolls heartily along like an aural documentary of this San Francisco institution as the young guitarist Carlos, organist Gregg Rolie and others navigate their way through blues, psychedelia and Latin roots in search of something that really gels. The cuts are hardly hit-or-miss, however, as Carlos' playing is quite piercing and the band already exudes a warm feeling of cohesion. Baba Olatunji's percussion vehicle "Jingo" only approximates its booty-shaking potential as a lone conga lays down the groove for Rolie's mellow Hammond organ and Carlos' kinetic guitar wailing. The lengthy "El Corazon Manda" and "La Puesta Del Sol" ("Gateway Of The Sun") are obscure treats for the Santana enthusiast, the latter another soft-hued vamp excursion that lasts over 10 minutes. The early take of "Persuasion" has a much more jangly, flower-power feel than the thunderous and more well-known rendition on the band's eponymous debut album. SKU: 1088666

Blue Wild Angel (Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival)
Includes a 24-page booklet. Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, electric guitar); Billy Cox (electric bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums). Producers: Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John McDermott. Recorded live at The Isle Of Wight, England on August 30, 1970. Includes liner notes by Keith Altham. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Released two weeks before what would have been Jimi Hendrix's 60th birthday, BLUE WILD ANGEL: JIMI HENDRIXLIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT is an 11-track highlight sampler of what ended up being the last concert given by the legendary guitarist. Backed by Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Band Of Gypsies bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix took the stage on August 30th 1970 at around three in the morning. Despite being less than thrilled with playing at such a late hour, the Seattle native still delivered a dazzling set. Opening with an instrumental version of "God Save The Queen" meant to rouse the crowd, Hendrix put together a set that found him paying homage to the Beatles ("Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"), Bob Dylan ("All Along The Watchtower"), and his blues roots ("Red House"). Also preserved is much of Hendrix's between-song banter including an anti-war intro to a nearly 20-minute version of "Machine Gun" dedicated to soldiers fighting in Vietnam, which heaves, sighs, and roars through waves of distortion-laced improvisation. Other highlights include killer versions of less-iconic Hendrix gems including "Dolly Dagger" and "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)." SKU: 1077589

Decade...but Wait It Gets Worse [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Sticky Fingaz, X-1, Columbo, Omar Epps, Seven O.D., Lex & Thirty, Detroit Diamond, Rio, My Quan, EST, Fredro Starr, Geneveese (rap vocals). Producers include: S-Man, Scott Storch, Sticky Fingaz, Porky, DSP. The title of Kirk Jones's second solo album, DECADE, refers to the fact it drops 10 years after his initial, monstrous explosion into the rap world as half of the New York duo Onyx whose hip-hop-channeling-hardcore BACDAFUCUP yielded the pop-crossover summer anthem "Slam." In 1993,Sticky Fingaz was nothing if not an unstoppable force, as the unrepentant former gang member used his guttural style to the fullest in a flow of unadulterated rage. Subsequently, he's become something of a well-regarded character actor and released a well-received solo record in 2000 before coming back around with DECADE. DECADE's intro is a tribute to SF's mentor, the late Jam Master Jay, revealing Sticky Fingaz's twisted zen propelled by a steamroller attitude. While his growl of rage is slightly more refined this time around, he's as unabashed about his life as ever, as exemplified by the devastatingly mournful and resigned "I Love Da Streets," which opens with the confession "this may sound crazy but I love suffering," and features a skillful guest by his IN TOO DEEP co-star Omar Epps. Stripped [ECD]
STRIPPED is an Enhanced multi-media CD. Its interactive material, playable on any CD-ROM player, includes highlights from the VOODOO LOUNGE CD-ROM, electronic liner notes, photos, lyrics, song outtakes and live videos of "Shattered," "Tumbling Dice" and "Like A Rolling Stone." The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, harmonica, guitar, maracas); Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Ronnie Wood (guitar, lap-slide guitar); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Bobby Keys, Andy Snitzer (saxophone); Kent Smith (trumpet); Michael Davis (trombone); Don Was (B-3 organ); Chuck Leavell (keyboards, background vocals); Darryl Jones (bass, background vocals); Bernard Fowler (percussion, background vocals); Lisa Fischer (background vocals). Recorded at The Paradiso Club, Amsterdam, Holland on May 26-27, 1995; The Olympia Theater, Paris, France; Tokyo, Japan and Lisbon, Portugal. As the longest continuously surviving band in rock and roll, The Rolling Stones have become a symbol of staying power, and STRIPPED proves why. Its lean, live, acoustic format draws from their Voodoo Lounge tour, which mixed the band's early material with some judiciously picked covers and a handful of country-blues classics, giving the band more punch as a live act that it's had in the studio in years. The Stones' clever interpretation of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" finds Mick Jagger asking "how does it feel to be on your own"; some thirty years after the song first hit the charts, the question still rings true. There is no other band like The Rolling Stones, and they are now completely on their own--peerless, that is. The Stones are also armed with a musical catalog that'll never be equaled, and STRIPPED shinesbecause it brings some brilliant, underutilized elements of that catalog back to the forefront. The barroom boogie of "I'm Free" and the subdued country-gospel of "Wild Horses" are steeped in the reverence that makes the delicate blues of Delta deity Robert Johnson's "Love In Vain" so crucial. It's all in here--everything that makes them The Rolling Stones: Jagger's sermonizing vocals, Keith Richards' and Ronnie Wood's acoustic honky-tonk guitars, Charlie Watt's flawless metronome drums. STRIPPED isn't as naked as it claims to be, but it's the perfect modern way to view the Stones' impressive past, and the band's ongoing strut as leaders of the pack. SKU: 1002164

Sex Packets
Personnel includes: Chopmaster J (vocals, drums, drum programming); Shock-G (vocals, drum programming, sampling, sequencing); DJ Fuze (vocals, scratches); Money B, Kenny K, MC Blowfish, C.M.J., Danny Myers, Vinny B, The Underground Speakhowyalike Crew, Marshe Gardner, Earl Cook, The Computer Woman, Mac Mone, Bulldog, Liz Racker "Baby Dope," Sleuth, Bret Davis, Tanisha Spencer, Dazzlin' Doc P, Schmoovy Schmoov, Maverick (vocals); The Piano Man (piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Randy Brooks (synthesizer); Kent Racker (bass); The Claphowyalike Crew (handclaps); Goldfingers (scratches). Recorded at Starlight Sound, Richmond, California; Alpha Omega, San Francisco, California; Hayes Recording Studio, Tampa Bay, Florida; J-Jam Recording, Oakland Hills, California. The history of black music exhibits a recurring tendency towards social consciousness, not just in terms of content, but also in a practice characterized by the formation of musical collectives which constitute self-organized utopian movements in their own right. To a partial list of such movements--which might include James Brown and the JBs, the Native Tongues, Fela Kuti and Afrika 70, Arrested Development, Soul II Soul, Sun Ra's Arkestra and Parliament/Funkadelic--we can add the name of Digital Underground. Although taking explicit cues from theP-Funk aesthetic (even dubbing themselves the Sons Of The P) in theme and sound (the use of multiple identities, and the accompanying comic strip narrative), DU are not simply clones of Dr. Funkenstein. Interludes like "The New Jazz" (DJ Fuze improvising off a groove provided by live drums and piano; a foreshadowing of Bay Area turntablism to come) demonstrate that they inherited the Funkadelic capacity for invention and experimentation along with the low-end. Meanwhile, singles "The Humpty Dance" and "Doowutchyalike;" equal parts party anthem and dada manifesto, combine the Parliament penchant for absurdity with an unmistakable b-boy ethos, perfectly captured in Shock G/Humpty Hump's baritone flow. Closer
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Josh Groban (vocals); Leo Z. (piano, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Angie Passerella (acoustic & Classical guitars); Dean Parks, Ramon Stagnaro, Michael Thompson (guitar); Joshua Bell (violin); Devis Mariotti (flute, whistle, background vocals); Eric Rigler (Uillean pipes); David Foster (piano);Mark Hammond (keyboards, programming); David Fall (drums); Raphael Padila (percussion); Jochem Van Der Saag (programming); Richard Page, Andrea Sandri (background vocals); Deep Forest. Producers: David Foster, Walter Afanasieff, Leo Z., Mauro Malavasi, Eric Mouquet. Recorded at Chartmaker Studios, Malibu, California. Powerhouse vocalist Josh Groban may not be all things to all people, but he's certainly many things to many people. An international sensation, Groban is a Broadway-ready belter, romantic crooner, and classical/pop crossover phenomenon. Groban largely shies away from the more operatic side of his musical personality on CLOSER, leaning more towards a lush, cosmopolitan style that finds him singing in Italian, French, Spanish, and English with equal aplomb. While the album is speckled with adult-contemporary pop production touches courtesy of Groban's mentor David Foster, much of the record sports a cinematic, grandly orchestrated feel. And on the closing track "Never Let Go," his collaboration with ambient popsters Deep Forest, Groban even bucks for inclusion on a future volume of the PURE MOODS series, showing that he's always got another stylistic surprise up his sleeve. Rose, The
Fourth album by ancient-music vocalgroup led by former Miranda Sex Garden vocalist Katharine Blake. Darker and more sparsely arranged than 2000's electronica-tinged 'Undrentide', its unusual acoustic instrumentation (ebow zither, astrowheel, hurdy-gurdy) frames songs sweetly sung in Middle English, Gaelic, Spanish, French, Italian, Welsh and Russian. Ghetto Fabolous [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Contains 3 hidden tracks, "Gotta Be Thug", "If They Want It", and an untitled hidden track. Personnel includes: Fabolous, Nate Dogg, Lil' Mo, Jagged Edge, Pain In Da Ass, Ja Rule. Producers include: Clue, Duro, Rockwilder, Rick Rock, Timbaland. Fabolous may take great delight in presenting the seamier side of ghetto life and street thuggery, but there's more to him than that. On his debut album GHETTO FABOLOUS, the wily rapper injects his performances with enough subtlety to keep from sounding monochromatic; he never harangues the listener with nonstop shouting like so many lesser gangsta practitioners might. In addition, the production (partly handled by none other than beatmeister supreme Timbaland) is full of enough memorable hooks and radio-friendly beats to ensnare hip-hop fans who don't usually go for gangsta fare. Most importantly, Fabolous leavens his hardcore talesof "Keepin' it Gangsta" and "The Bad Guy" with a touch of levity, so things never get too heavy-handed. Fabolous manages to keep it real and keep things balanced at the same time; no mean feat in gangsta rap. SKU: 1067259
